Quote/s of the Day – 16 May – Christ and His Church

Quote/s of the Day – 16 May – Thursday of the Fourth week of Easter, C, Gospel: John 13:16–20

“Whoever receives
the one I send,
receives me..”

John 13:20whoever receives the one i send receives me john 13 20 16 may 2019.jpg

“In her voyage
across the ocean of this world,
the Church is like a great ship
being pounded by the waves
of life’s different stresses.
Our duty is not to abandon ship
but to keep her on her course.”

St Boniface (672-754)in her voyage across the ocean of this world - st boniface 16 may 2019

“The Church exists,
for nothing else
but to draw men into Christ,
to make them little Christs.
If they are not doing that,
all the cathedrals, clergy,
missions, sermons,
even the Bible itself,
are simply a waste of time.
God became man
for no other purpose.”

C S Lewis (1898-1963)the church exists for nothing else = c s lewis - 16 may 2019

“How sad it is,
when someone
comes to you,
looking for Jesus
and all they see.
is you.”

Thought for the Day – 8 May – “A New Life”

Thought for the Day – 8 May – Wednesday Third Week of Easter, C

“A New Life”

“The perfect surrender and humiliation were undergone by Christ – perfect because He is God, surrender and humiliation, because He is man.
Now the Christian belief is that, if we somehow share the humility and suffering of Christ, we shall also share in His conquest of death and find a new life after we ave died and, in it, become perfect and perfectly happy creatures.
This means something much more than our trying to follow His teaching.
People often ask when the next step in evolution – the step to something beyond man – will happen. But, on the Christian view, it has happened already.
In Christ, a new kind of man appeared and the new kind of life which began in Him, is to be put into us.”

Quote of the Day – 3 May – Perhaps, we feel inclined to disagree with Him?

Quote of the Day – 3 May – Friday of the Second Week of Easter

“The happiness that God designs for His higher creatures, is the happiness of being freely, voluntarily united to Him and to each other, in an ecstasy of love and delight, compared with which, the most rapturous love between a man and woman, on this earth, is mere milk and water.   And for that, they must be free.

Of course, God knew what would happen if they used their freedom the wrong way – apparently He thought it worth the risk.   Perhaps, we feel inclined to disagree with Him?   But there is a difficulty about disagreeing with God.   He is the source from which all your reasoning power comes – you could not be right and He wrong – anymore, than a stream can rise higher than it’s own source!”

One Minute Reflection – 6 April – Others said, “This is the Christ.”

One Minute Reflection – 6 April – Saturday of the Fourth week of Lent, Year C, Gospel: John 7:40–53

Others said, “This is the Christ.”   But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?...John 7:41others said this is the christ john 7 41 - 6 april 2019.jpg

REFLECTION – “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him:  ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’   That is the one thing we must not say.   A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else He would be the Devil of Hell.   You must make your choice.   Either this man was and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.   You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher.   He has not left that open to us.   He did not intend to.”…Prof C S Lewisi am trying here - c s lewis john 7 41 6 april 2019 no 2.jpg

PRAYER – In Your gentle mercy Lord, guide our wayward hearts, for we know that left to ourselves, we cannot do Your will.   Almighty God, turn our hearts to Yourself, so that we, seeking the one thing necessary, may worship You in spirit and in truth.   We give You thanks for our faith, increase our faith O our God!   May the prayers of all your saints and the Virgin Mary, Queen of All Saints, obtain the gift of humility and fidelity for us and for every believer, so that our prayer may always be genuine and pleasing to the Lord. Through Christ our Lord and Redeemer, with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.virin mary queen of all saints no 2 pray for us 6 april 2019.jpg

Quote/s of the Day – 31 March – “Laetare” Fourth Sunday of Lent, Year C

“There is more joy in heaven over a converted sinner
than over a righteous person standing firm.
A leader in battle has more love for a soldier
who returns after fleeing and who valiantly pursues the enemy,
than for one who never turned back
but who never acted valiantly either.
A farmer has greater love for land which bears fruitfully,
after he has cleared it of thorns, than for land
which never had thorns but which never yielded a fruitful harvest.”

Quote of the Day – 27 March – “You must do this. I can’t.”

Quote of the Day – 27 March – Wednesday of the Third week of Lent, Year C

We cannot discover our failure to keep God’s law, except by trying our very hardest (and then failing).   Unless we really try, whatever we say, there will always be at the back of our minds, the idea that, if we try harder next time, we shall succeed in being completely good.
Thus, in one sense, the road back to God, is a road of moral effort, of trying harder and harder.
But in another sense, it is not trying that is ever going to bring us home.
All this trying leads up to the vital moment, at which you turn to God and say,
“You must do this. I can’t.”
