Quote/s of the Day – 14 September – The Message of the Cross

Quote/s of the Day – 14 September – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Gospel: John 3:13–17

The message of the cross
is foolishness to those
who are perishing
but to us,
who are being saved,
it is the power
of God…

1 Corinthians 1:181-corinthians-1-18-the message of the cross is foolishness - 26 april 2018.jpg

“We give glory to You, Lord,
who raised up Your Cross to span the jaws of death
like a bridge by which souls might pass
from the region of the dead to the land of the living. ..
You are incontestably alive.
Your murderers sowed Your living body in the earth
as farmers sow grain but it sprang up
and yielded an abundant harvest of men
raised from the dead.”

St Ephrem the Syrian (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Churchwe-give-glory-to-you-lord-st-ephrem-30-march-2018-good-friday

“The Cross is the hope of Christians,
the staff of the lame,
the comfort of the poor,
the destruction of all pride,
the victory over devils,
the guide of youth,
the pilot of mariners,
the refuge of those who are in danger,
the counsellor of the just,
the rest of the afflicted,
the physician of the sick,
the glory of Martyrs.”

St John Chrysostom (347-407)

“Christ, who is your life, is hanging before you,
so that you may look at the Cross, as in a mirror.
There you will be able to know,
how mortal were your wounds,
that no medicine other than.
the Blood of the Son of God, could heal.
If you look closely, you will be able to realise,
how great your human dignity and your value are….
Nowhere other than looking at himself,
in the mirror of the Cross,
can man better understand how much he is worth”

St Anthony of Padua OFM (1195-1231) Doctor of the Churchchrist-who-is-your-life-st-anthony-of-padua-13-june-2018.jpg

“Apart from the cross
there is no other ladder
by which we may get to heaven.“

St Rose of Lima (1586-1617)apart-from-the-cross-st-rose-of-lima 23 aug 2017.jpg

We have always seen,
that those who were
closest to Christ our Lord,
were those with the greatest trials.
Let us look at what
His glorious Mother suffered
and the glorious apostles.
Take up the Cross of Jesus.
Help your Spouse to carry the burden
that weighs Him down
and pay no attention
to what they may say about you.
If you should happen to stumble
and fall like your Spouse,
do not withdraw from the Cross or abandon it.
No matter how great your trials may be,
you will see, that they are quite small,
in comparison to His.

“…only the Cross of Christ
sheds light on the path of this life….
God is in the detached heart,
in the silence of prayer,
in the voluntary sacrifice to pain,
in the emptiness of the world and its creatures.
God is in the Cross and,
as long as we do not love the Cross,
we will not see Him, or feel Him….
If the world and men knew….
But they will not know,
they are very busy in their interests,
their hearts are very full of things
that are not God.”

St Rafael Arnáiz Barón (1911-1938)only in the cross of christ - st rafael arnaiz baron 26 april 2019 easter friday.jpg

“The life of each and every one of us has been written.
The crucifix is my autobiography.
The blood is the ink.
The nails the pen.
The skin the parchment.
On every line of that body, I can trace my life.
In the crown of thorns I can read my pride. In the hands that are dug with nails,
I can read avarice and greed.
In the flesh hanging from him like purple rags,
I can read my lust.
In feet that are fettered, I can find the times
that I ran away and would not let Him follow.
Any sin that you can think of is written there.”

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen (1895-1979)

One Minute Reflection – 13 September – Friday of the Twenty third week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Luke 6:39–42 and the Memorial of St John Chrysostom (347-407) Father & Doctor of the Church

“Then you will see clearly” … Luke 6:42

REFLECTION –
“O Lord, drive away the darkness from our minds
with the light of Your wisdom,
so that enlightened in this way
we may serve You with renewed purity.
The beginning of the sun’s passage through the sky
marks the beginning of the working-day for us mortals,
we ask You, Lord, to prepare in our minds
a place where the day that knows no end may give its light.

Grant that we may have within us, this light,
the life of the resurrection,
and that nothing may take away our delight in You.
Mark us with the sign of that day that does not begin
with the movement and the course of the sun,
by keeping our minds fixed on You.

In your sacraments we welcome You every day
and receive You in our bodies.
Make us worthy to experience within us
the resurrection for which we hope.
Be the wings for our thoughts, O Lord,
Drawing us lightly to the heights
And bearing us up to our true home.

By the grace of baptism we conceal within our bodies
the treasure of Your divine life…
Let us appreciate the great beauty that is ours
through the spiritual beauty that Your immortal will
arouses in our mortal nature…
May Your Resurrection, Jesus,
cause the spiritual man to grow in us (cf Eph 3:16)
and may the contemplation of Your mysteries
become the mirror in which we come to recognise you (1Cor 13:12).

Grant, Lord, that we may hasten to our true home,
and, like Moses on the mountain-top
seeing the promised Land, (Dt 34:1)
let us possess it even now through contemplation.”

PRAYER – Lord God, strength of those who hope in You, by Your will, St John Chrysostom became renowned in the Church, for his astounding eloquence and his forbearance in persecution.   Grant that we may be enriched by his teaching and thus grow in sanctity, to follow the commandments You set forth in Your Word, Your Son who is our Saviour and Redeemer.  By the prayers of St John Chrysostom, may we attain the place You have prepared for us.   We make our prayer through Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever amen.st-john-chrysostom-pray-for-us-13-sept-2018.jpg

Our Morning Offering – 26 August – Monday of the Twenty-first week in Ordinary Time

Give me Strength, O Lord
By St Ephrem of Syria (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Church

Lord Jesus Christ,
King of kings,
You have power over life and death.
You know even things that are uncertain and obscure,
and our very thoughts and feelings are not hidden from You.
Cleanse me from my secret faults,
for I have done wrong and You saw it.
You know how weak I am,
both in soul and in body.
Give me strength, O Lord,
in my frailty and sustain me in my sufferings.
Grant me a prudent judgement, dear Lord,
and let me always be mindful of Your blessings.
Let me retain until the end, Your grace
that has protected me till now.
Amengive me strength o lord - by st ephrem - 26 august 2019.jpg

“Sursum corda” – lift up your hearts, high above the tangled web of our concerns, desires, anxieties and thoughtlessness – “Lift up your hearts, your inner selves!”   In both exclamations we are summoned, as it were, to a renewal of our Baptism: “Conversi ad Dominum” – we must distance ourselves ever anew from taking false paths, onto which we stray so often in our thoughts and actions.   We must turn ever anew towards Him who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.   We must be converted ever anew, turning with our whole life towards the Lord.   And ever anew we must allow our hearts to be withdrawn from the force of gravity, which pulls them down and inwardly we must raise them high,in truth and love.   At this hour, let us thank the Lord, because through the power of His word and of the holy Sacraments, He points us in the right direction and draws our heart upwards.”

“The scene of the Annunciation
merits consideration for another reason, too,
it is not only wholly Christological;,
it is wholly trinitarian as well…
The angel’s initial salutation…
brings her the greeting of the ‘Lord’, the Father…
she will give birth to the ‘Son of the Most High’…
the Holy Spirit will overshadow her…”

“The Annunciation, recounted at the beginning
of St Luke’s Gospel, is a humble, hidden event –
no-one saw it, no one except Mary knew of it –
but, at the same time,
it was crucial to the history of humanity.
When the Virgin said her “yes”
to the Angel’s announcement,
Jesus was conceived and with Him began
the new era of history that was to be ratified
in Easter as the “new and eternal Covenant”.

Lenten Reflection – 25 March – Today, Mary became God’s heaven for us

Lenten Reflection – 25 March – The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

Daily Meditation:
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”

Today we step out of Lent, in one way.
We are nine months away from Christmas.
This is the feast of the Incarnation – the enfleshment of our God for us.
In Jesus, God entered this world, our world.

This day thereby offers wonderful Lenten graces.

Ahaz has his own plans.
He refuses to ask God for help, because he doesn’t want God’s help.
And, of course, he makes it sound pious.
There’s fruit in that for all of us, whenever we refuse to ask for God’s help.

Mary, on the other hand, is God’s servant.
She is humble and she says “yes.”
And God, for whom “nothing is impossible, does the rest.

I delight to do thy will, O my God,
thy law is within my heart.
Psalm 40:8luke 1 38 mary said - solemnity of the annunciation 25 march 2019

“The Mighty One has done great things for me” (Lk 1:49)

Saint Ephrem (306-373)
Doctor of the Church
Sermons on the Mother of God, 2, 93-145

Contemplate Mary, my beloved, see how Gabriel went into her house and her questioning:   “How can this be?”   The Holy Spirit’s servant gave her this answer: “Nothing is impossible for God, for him, all is easy.”   Consider how she believed the word she had heard and said:   “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord.”   From that moment the Lord descended in a way known to Him alone,  He bestirred Himself and came according to His good pleasure,  He entered her without her feeling it and she opened herself to Him without experiencing any suffering.   She bore within herself, as a child, Him by whom the world was filled.   He descended to become the model that would renew Adam’s ancient image.

And so when God’s birth is proclaimed to you, keep silent.   Let Gabriel’s word be held in your mind for nothing is impossible to this glorious Majesty, who humbled Himself for us and was born of our humanity.   Today, Mary became God’s heaven for us, in that the sublime Divinity came down and placed His dwelling within her.   God assumed smallness in her – yet without diminishing His nature – to make us great.   In her, God spun a garment with which to save us.   All the words of the prophets and just ones were fulfilled in her.   From her, arose the light that drove away the shadows of paganism.

Mary’s titles are numberless… she is the palace in which the mighty King of kings abode, yet He did not cast her out when He came, because it was from her that He took flesh and was born.   She is the new heaven in which dwelt the King of kings, in her Christ arose and from her rose up to enlighten creation, formed and fashioned in His image. She is the stock of the vine that bore the grape, she yielded a fruit greater than nature, and He, although other than her in His nature, ripened in colour on being born of her. She is the spring from which living waters sprang up for the thirsty and all those who drank them yielded fruit a hundredfold.

mary's titles are numberless - st ephrem - annunciation - sermon 25 march 2019

Closing Prayer:
God of infinite love,
I thank You for this feast of our salvation,
right here in the middle of Lent.
I turn to You to beg for Your help.
I need the inspiration and help of Mary on this journey.
Please grant me the grace to be humbly faithful
to what You are calling me to do.
Please give me what I need to be free and to be Your servant.
Please let Mary guide us in the path to peace in our world.
I ask You this, through Jesus our Lord.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen

One Minute Reflection – 21 January – Monday of the Second week in Ordinary Time – Today’s Gospel: Mark 2:18–22 and The Memorial of St Agnes (c 291- c 304) Virgin and Martyr

“As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.”…Mark 2: 19b

REFLECTION – “Lord, I invite you to a wedding banquet in songs.   In Cana, there was not enough wine to express our praise.   You, the guest who filled the jars with good wine, fill my mouth with your praise!
The wine at Cana is symbol of our praise because those who drank of it marvelled.   At that wedding banquet which was not your own, You, the truly righteous, filled six jars to overflowing with delicious wine.   So at the banquet to which I am inviting You, You can fill the ears of a multitude with Your sweetness.
In times past You were invited to the wedding feasts of others.  Here now is Your own banquet;  it is chaste and beautiful.   May it give joy to Your people!   May your songs delight Your guests, may my zither accompany Your song!
Our soul is Your betrothed, our body is Your bridal chamber, our senses and our thoughts are the guests.   If for You, one single person is a wedding banquet, how great will be the banquet, for the whole Church!”…St Ephrem (c 306-373) Father & Doctor of the Churchmark 2 19 as long as they have the bridegroom - our souls is your betrothed - st ephrem 21 jan 2019.jpg

PRAYER – Almighty Lord, God and Father, protect us by Your power throughout the course of this day, even as You have enabled us to begin it.   Let our every thought, word and deed rejoice and strive always to please the love of our souls.   For we, Your people, are the bride of Your Son, who came to betroth us to Himself.   Grant that by the prayers of one so young, who lived each moment for Him, we may be brought to perfection with You in our final home.   St Agnes, pray for us!   We make our prayer through Jesus, our Lord, in union with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.st-agnes-pray-for-us-21-jan-2018.jpg

Blessed is the Child, who gladdened Bethlehem today.
Blessed is the Babe, who today renewed the youth of humankind.
Blessed is the Fruit, who bowed Himself down to our hunger.
Blessed is the gracious One, who suddenly enriched our poverty
and supplied our need.
Blessed is He, whose tender mercy led Him to heal our infirmities.
Blessed is He, whom freedom crucified, because He permitted it.
Blessed is He, whom also the wood bore, because He gave it leave.
Blessed is He, whom the grave bound, when He set limits to Himself.
Blessed is He, whose free choice brough Him
to the womb and to birth.
Blessed is He, who sealed our soul and adorned and betrothed her to Himself.
Blessed is the beautiful One, who remade us in His image.
Blessed is He, who made our flesh a tabernacle for His hiddenness.
Blessed is He, who with our tongue spoke out His secrets.
Blessed is the Word of the most high, who became flesh today for us.

One Minute Reflection – 21 September – The Feast of St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist- Today’s Gospel: Matthew 9:9–13

“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” …Matthew 9:11b

REFLECTION – “Our Lord chose Matthew, the tax collector, to encourage his fellows to join Him.   He looked on sinners, called them and brought them to sit beside Him.   What a wonderful sight!   Angels stand trembling while publicans, seated, rejoice.   The angels are struck with awe before the Lord’s greatness while sinners eat and drink with Him. The scribes choke with hatred and indignation, the publicans rejoice because of His mercy.   The heavens saw the sight and were filled with wonder;  hell saw it and was maddened.   Satan saw it and was enraged;  death saw it and withered;  the scribes saw it and were much troubled.
There was joy in heaven and happiness among the angels because the rebellious had been persuaded, the recalcitrant quieted and sinners reformed and because publicans had been made righteous.   Just as our Lord did not turn away from the shamefulness of the cross in spite of the entreaties of His friends (Mt 16:22) so he did not refuse the company of publicans in spite of the taunts of His enemies.   He despised mockery and scorned praise, thus accomplishing all that is for mankind’s good.”…St Ephrem (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Church – Commentary on the Gospel, or Diatessaron, 5, 17 (SC 121, p.115 rev.)why does your teacher - matthew 9 11b - he looked on sinners - st ephrem - 21 sept 2018

And this look unlocked Matthew’s heart; it set him free, it healed him, it gave him hope, a new life, as it did to Zacchaeus, to Bartimaeus, to Mary Magdalene, to Peter, and to each of us. Even if we do not dare raise our eyes to the Lord, he looks at us first. This is our story, and it is like that of so many others. Each of us can say: “I, too, am a sinner, whom Jesus has looked upon”. I ask you, in your homes or in the Church, to be still for a moment and to recall with gratitude and happiness those situations, that moment, when the merciful gaze of God was felt in our lives.”…Pope Francis – 21 September 2015, The Feast of St Matthewjesus looked at him - pope francis - 21 sept 2018 - st matthew

PRAYER – Lord, You showed Your great mercy to Matthew the tax-gatherer,by calling him to become Your Apostle, supported by his prayer and example, may we always answer Your call and live in close union with You.   We make our prayer, in union with God our Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. St Matthew, Apostle of Christ, pray for us, amen.st-matthew-pray-for-us-21-sept-2017

One Minute Reflection – 14 September – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

“…And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”...John 3:14-15and as moses lifted up - john 3 - 14-15 - 14 sept 2018

REFLECTION – “From now on, through the cross, all shadows have been dispelled and the truth arises, as the apostle John says:  “The old order has passed away; all things are new” (Rv 21:4-5).   Death has been stripped of prey, hell’s captives liberated;  man is set free;  the Lord reigns;  creation rejoices.   The cross is victorious and all nations, races, languages and peoples (Rv 7:9) come to adore him.   Together, in the cross we find our joy, exclaiming with blessed Paul:  “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14).   The cross gives light to the whole universe;  it casts out darkness and gathers nations together in charity into one Church, one faith, one baptism, from West and East, from the North and from the seas.   It stands at the very centre of the world, set up on Calvary.
Armed with the cross, the Apostles go out to preach and gather together in adoration of it the whole universe, treading under foot every hostile power.   Through it the martyrs have bravely confessed the faith, fearless of tyrants’ cunning.   Having taken it upon themselves, monks have joyfully made solitude their home.
When Christ returns, this cross will first appear in heaven, the Great King’s precious sceptre, living, true and holy.   “Then,” says the Lord, “the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven” (Mt 24:30).   We will see it escorted by angels, illuminating the earth from one end of the universe to the other, brighter than the sun, proclaiming the Day of the Lord.”…Homily attributed to Saint Ephrem (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Churchthe cross gives light - st ephrem - 14 sept 2018

PRAYER – O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should undergo the Cross to save the human race, grant, we pray, that we, who have known his mystery on earth, may merit the grace of His redemption in heaven.
For you placed the salvation of the human race on the wood of the Cross, so that, where death arose, life might again spring forth and the evil one, who conquered on a tree, might likewise on a tree be conquered through Christ.   O cross, you are the glorious sign of victory.   Through your power may we share in the triumph of Christ Jesus.
We adore You Christ and we praise You, for by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Ameno-cross-you-are-the-glorious-sign-of-victory-feast-of-the-exaltation-of-the-holy-cross

Thought for the Day – 22 August – The Memorial of The Queenship of Mary, Holy Mother of God

Thought for the Day – 22 August – The Memorial of The Queenship of Mary, Holy Mother of God – Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:26–38

As St Paul suggests in Romans 8:28–30, God has predestined human beings from all eternity to share the image of his Son.   All the more was Mary predestined to be the mother of Jesus.   As Jesus was to be king of all creation, Mary, in dependence on Jesus, was to be queen.   All other titles to queenship derive from this eternal intention of God. As Jesus exercised his kingship on earth by serving his Father and his fellow human beings, so did Mary exercise her queenship.   As the glorified Jesus remains with us as our king till the end of time (Matthew 28:20), so does Mary, who was assumed into heaven and crowned queen of heaven and earth.
In the fourth century St Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.”   Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title.   Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.”   The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship.
The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast.   In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power. (Fr Don Miller OFM)
“Just as Mary surpassed in grace all others on earth, so also in heaven is her glory unique.   If eye has not seen or ear heard or the human heart conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9), who can express what He has prepared for the woman who gave Him birth and who loved Him, as everyone knows, more than anyone else?” (St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) – Doctor of Light – Mellifluous Doctor)just-as-mary-surpassed-in-grace-st-bernard-22 aug 2017

Your eyes opened to a new kind of light
Wide pools that gaze with merciful love upon the world
Your sword-pierced heart, immaculate,
Strong-walled as a cathedral
In the holy city of God.

Angels surround your throne
Holy Blessed Virgin,
Mother of God
Star-crowned Queen of heaven and
Queen of angels

We, though sinners, are yours,
Every tribe on earth, every race
Beckoned to enclosure
In deep mantle-folds of grace.your-eyes-opened-to-a-new-kind-of-light-queenship-of-mary-poem-22 aug 2017

PRAYER – O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust of power and idle talk.    But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love to Thy servant.  Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own sins and not to judge my brother; for Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. One Minute Reflection – 15 December – Friday of the Second Week of Advent

Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour...Matthew 25:13matthew 25 13 - 15 dec 2017

REFLECTION – “To prevent His disciples from asking the time of His coming, Christ said: About that hour no one knows, neither the angels nor the Son.   It is not for you to know times or moments.   He has kept those things hidden so that we may keep watch, each of us thinking that He will come in our own day. If He had revealed the time of His coming, His coming would have lost its savour:  it would no longer be an object of yearning for the nations and the age in which it will be revealed.   He promised that He would come but did not say when He would come and so, all generations and ages await Him eagerly.”…St Ephrem (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Churchhe promised that he would come - st ephrem - 15 dec 2017

PRAYER – Holy God, keep us ever alert and watchful, making straight the paths of Your Son, as we await His coming.   It is within our hearts that we need to straighten all things, for if all hearts are ready, our Lord will find His people waiting in hope, peace, joy and love.   Come, Lord Jesus, come. Thought for the Day – 9 June

The writings of Saint Ephrem speak volumes about his passion for the truth of the Gospel and his zeal for spreading the Word of God.   We are blessed to have poems, hymns, prayers and writings today, penned nearly 2 centuries ago, reminding us not only of the constancy of the love of the Lord but of the long-standing traditions and teachings of the Church.   As we read the writings of Saint Ephrem, we pray for his zeal for the Lord and the future of His Church on earth.
Before his death, Saint Ephrem reflected on his life, writing in his testament:  “There grew a vine-shoot on my tongue:  and increased and reached unto heaven.   And it yielded fruit without measure:  leaves likewise without number.   It spread, it stretched wide, it bore fruit:  all creation drew near.   And the more they were that gathered, the more its clusters abounded.   These clusters were the Homilies and these leaves the Hymns.   God was the giver of them, glory to Him for His grace!   For He gave to me of His good pleasure, from the storehouse of His treasures.”

St Ephrem, pray for us that we too may grow a vine-shoot on our tongues by the grace of God!

“Forget not the Holy Spirit
at the moment of your enlightenment;
He is ready to mark your soul with His seal….
He will give you the heavenly and divine seal
which makes the devil tremble;
He will arm you for the fight;
He will give you strength.”

PRAYER suppresses anger.
PRAYER prevents emotions of pride and envy.

“When you begin to read or listen
to the Holy Scriptures, pray to God thus:
“Lord Jesus Christ, open the ears and eyes
of my heart so that I may hear Your words
and understand them
and may fulfill Your will.”
Always pray to God like this,
that He might illumine your mind
and open to you the power of His words.
Many, having trusted in their own reason,
have turned away into deception.”

O Lord and Master of my life,

of discouragement,
of lust for power
and of vain speaking.
But bestow upon me, Your servant,

Yea, O Lord and King,

my own transgressions
and judge not my brother,
for blessed are You unto ages of ages. Amen
