Quinquagesima Sunday (Traditional Calendar) +2021 – From Latin quinquagesimus meaning “fiftieth,” therefore, this is the period of fifty days before Easter. It begins with the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, called Dominica in Quinquagesima or Esto Mihi from the beginning of the Introit of the Mass; it is a Sunday of the second class and the colour the Mass and Office is violet.

Our Lady of Bourbourg, Flanders (1383) – 14 February:

Jean Froissart, born in the 1330s, was a man devoted to literature. His famous Chronicles was aimed at a knightly and aristocratic audience and was devoted to “the honourable enterprises, noble adventures and deeds of arms, performed in the wars between England and France…to the end that brave men taking example from them may be encouraged in their well-doing.” His history is one of the most important sources for the first half of the Hundred Years’ War, and certain events of the era, such as the battles of Crecy and Poitiers and the English Peasant Revolt of 1381. He was also an eyewitness to the miracles of Our Lady of Bourbourg that occurred in the year 1383.
“When the king of France came before Bourbourg there were never seen such fine men at arms nor such numbers as he had with him. The lords and their men were all drawn up, and eager for the attack. Those who had reconnoitred the place, said it could not hold out long. The Bretons, Burgundians, Normans, Germans and others, who knew there was much wealth in the place, which, if taken by storm, would probably fall to their share, began to skirmish with the infantry at the barriers, without waiting for orders from the constable or marshals of the army.
This skirmish increased so much that the French set fire to the town by means of fire-arrows and cannons, so that such a flame and smoke came from the houses of Bourbourg as might have been seen forty leagues off. Many gallant deeds were done and the assailants leaped cheerfully into the mud of the ditches above the knees when they engaged with the English at the palisade and barriers.

The garrison defended themselves handsomely, indeed, they had need of their exertions, for they knew not on which side to turn themselves. They were attacked on all part and the houses of the town were blazing with fire, which more confounded the English than anything else. This, however, did not throw them off their guard, nor cause them to quit their posts. Sir Matthew Redman and Sir Nicholas Drayton, with their men, in the centre of the town, endeavoured to check the progress of the fire but it was such a dry season, that the smallest spark set the houses in flames. It is certain, that if the attack had begun earlier, or had not the night come on soon, the town must have been taken by storm but the approach of night put an end to it.
On the attack ceasing, the French retired to their quarters, to attend the sick and bury the dead. They said that on the morrow they would renew the attac, and it should be irresistible. The English were employed in repairing the palisades which had been broken, in putting all things in a good state and in extinguishing the fires in the town. They were in a most perilous situation, being surrounded on all sides, without means of escaping by flight.

The Duke of Brittany, who was on the opposite side of the town to the King, entered into negotiations with the English, aware of the peril they were in. He advised them to surrender the town, on their lives and fortunes being spared. This they were very willing to do and they entreated the Duke, through love of God and in honour of his gentility, to undertake the business. The King of France replied, that, in God’s name, he would willingly agree to a treaty. The English had been much renowned for gallantry and deeds of arms and it was settled that the English should depart from Bourbourg and Gravelines and carry away with them as much of their wealth as they could. Several of the Bretons, French, Normans and Burgundians were much vexed at this treaty, for they thought of partaking of the spoils but the King and his council had ordered it otherwise.
The whole of Tuesday they employed in shoeing their horses and in packing up all their wealth, of which they had much and in making preparations for their departure. On the Wednesday morning they loaded their baggage-horses and began their march, passing through the army with passports from the King. The Bretons were much exasperated when they saw them so loaded, waiting at Calais for a favourable wind to return to England.
The King of France and all the lords of his army, with their attendants, entered Bourbourg on Thursday morning. The Bretons began to plunder it, without exception, even the Church of St John. In that Church a pillager stood upon an Altar with the intent of forcing out a precious stone that was in the crown of an image of Our Lady. As he reached to steal the stone, the image suddenly turned about and the pillager in his fright, fell from the Altar and was instantly struck dead. This is a certain truth, for many persons were witnesses of it. Shortly afterwards, another pillager came with a similar intent of robbing the image but all the bells began a peal without anyone touching them, for no-one could have rung them, the bell-ropes being drawn up and fastened.
On account of these miracles, the Church was visited by large crowds. The King made a handsome present to the Church, as did all the lords, so that the amount of their gifts was upwards of three thousand francs.

But immediately a woman, whose little daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit, heard of him and came and fell down at his feet....Mark 7:25

REFLECTION – “O woman, your faith is great.   Let it be done to you as you wish” (Mt 15:28).   Indeed, she had great enough faith, since she knew neither the ancient miracles, commands and promises of the prophets, nor the more recent ones of the Lord himself. In addition, as often as she was disregarded by the Lord, she persevered in her entreaties and she did not cease knocking by asking him, though she knew only by popular opinion that he was the Saviour.   On account of this, she secured the great object for which she implored…

Wishing now to sum up concisely the profile of the two Brothers, we should first recall the enthusiasm with which Cyril approached the writings of St Gregory of Nazianzus, learning from him the value of language in the transmission of the Revelation.   St Gregory had expressed the wish that Christ would speak through him:  “I am a servant of the Word, so I put myself at the service of the Word”.   Desirous of imitating Gregory in this service, Cyril asked Christ to deign to speak in Slavonic through him.   He introduced his work of translation with the solemn invocation:  “Listen, O all of you Slav Peoples, listen to the word that comes from God, the word that nourishes souls, the word that leads to the knowledge of God”.   In fact, a few years before the Prince of Moravia had asked the Emperor Michael III to send missionaries to his country, it seems that Cyril and his brother Methodius, surrounded by a group of disciples, were already working on the project of collecting the Christian dogmas in books written in Slavonic.   The need for new graphic characters closer to the language spoken was therefore clearly apparent:  so it was that the Glagolitic alphabet came into being.   Subsequently modified, it was later designated by the name “Cyrillic”, in honour of the man who inspired it.   It was a crucial event for the development of the Slav civilisation in general.   Cyril and Methodius were convinced that the individual peoples could not claim to have received the Revelation fully, unless they had heard it in their own language and read it in the characters proper to their own alphabet.

Methodius had the merit of ensuring that the work begun by his brother was not suddenly interrupted.   While Cyril, the “Philosopher”, was more inclined to contemplation, Methodius on the other hand had a leaning for the active life.   Thanks to this he was able to lay the foundations of the successive affirmation of what we might call the “Cyrillian-Methodian idea”:   it accompanied the Slav peoples in the different periods of their history, encouraging their cultural, national and religious development. This was already recognised by Pope Pius XI in his Apostolic Letter Quod Sanctum Cyrillum, in which he described the two Brothers:  “Sons of the East, with a Byzantine homeland, of Greek origin, for the Roman missions to reap Slav apostolic fruit” (AAS 19 [1927] 93-96).   The historic role they played was later officially proclaimed by St Pope John Paul II who, with his Apostolic Letter Egregiae Virtutis, declared them Co-Patrons of Europe, together with St Benedict (31 December 1980; L’Osservatore Romano English edition, 19 January 1981, p. 3).

Cyril and Methodius are in fact a classic example of what today is meant by the term “inculturation”:  every people must integrate the message revealed into its own culture and express its saving truth in its own language.   This implies a very demanding effort of “translation” because it requires the identification of the appropriate words to present anew, without distortion, the riches of the revealed word.   The two holy Brothers have left us a most important testimony of this, to which the Church also looks today in order to draw from it inspiration and guidelines.   Pope Benedict XVI, Wednesday, 17 June 2009

The work of Saints Cyril and Methodius are a powerful reminder of our role in the celebration of the Liturgy.   God speaks to us—to each of us—in a language that we can understand and based upon that understanding we are called to live the Gospel.   We pray today for more active participation, greater comprehension and the ability to successfully live the Word of God for all to see!

Almighty and everlasting God, who by the power of the Holy Spirit moved your servant Cyril and his brother Methodius to bring the light of the Gospel to a hostile and divided people, overcome all bitterness and strife among us by the love of Christ and make us one united family under the banner of the Prince of Peace, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever, amen.

Thought for the Day -14 February

Sts Cyril and Methodius were thrust into a totally unexpected task, requiring astonishing energy, flexibility and presenting immense challenges.   They evangelised a whole people and brought them the treasures of the Christian faith.   Faith is prepared for the unexpected and adapts itself to new and changing circumstances.   Holiness means reacting to human life with God’s love:  human life as it is, crisscrossed with the political and the cultural, the beautiful and the ugly, the selfish and the saintly.    For Cyril and Methodius much of their daily cross had to do with the language of the liturgy.    They are not saints because they got the liturgy into Slavonic but because they did so with the courage and humility of Christ.

PRAYER – Lord Jesus, make me realise that You are living in me and I am in You.   Enable me to readiate You in my outward life by being consciously generous, loving, humble, kind.   By being consciously united to You in every thought, word and deed.   I pray that Your purpose may be mine too, do the Father’s Will.   That the Saints who walk before me, Sts Cyril and Methodius, St Valentine, may pray for us all, amen!

Saint/s of the Day – 14 February – Cyril and Methodius – (826 or 827 and 815-869 and 885) Bishops and Confessors; Equals to the Apostles; Patrons of Europe; Apostles to the Slavs. CYRIL – PATRON of unity between Eastern and Western Churches, ecumenism, against storms, Slavic peoples (given in 1863 by Pope Pius IX, Slavic countries, various Diocese.

Two brothers who were Byzantine Christian theologians and Christian missionaries. Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title “Apostles to the Slavs”.    They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic.    After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs.    Both brothers are venerated in the Orthodox Church as saints with the title of “equal-to-apostles”.    In 1880, Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia.

Because their father was an officer in a part of Greece inhabited by many Slavs, these two Greek brothers ultimately became missionaries, teachers, and patrons of the Slavic peoples.   After a brilliant course of studies, Cyril (called Constantine until he became a monk shortly before his death) refused the governorship of a district such as his brother had accepted among the Slavic-speaking population.    Cyril withdrew to a monastery where his brother Methodius had become a monk after some years in a governmental post.

A decisive change in their lives occurred when the Duke of Moravia asked the Eastern Emperor Michael for political independence from German rule and ecclesiastical autonomy (having their own clergy and liturgy).    Cyril and Methodius undertook the missionary task.   Cyril’s first work was to invent an alphabet, still used in some Eastern liturgies.    His followers probably formed the Cyrillic alphabet.    Together they translated the Gospels, the psalter, Paul’s letters and the liturgical books into Slavonic and composed a Slavonic liturgy, highly irregular then.   That and their free use of the vernacular in preaching led to opposition from the German clergy.    The bishop refused to consecrate Slavic bishops and priests, and Cyril was forced to appeal to Rome.    On the visit to Rome, he and Methodius had the joy of seeing their new liturgy approved by Pope Adrian II.   Cyril, long an invalid, died in Rome 50 days after taking the monastic habit.

Methodius continued mission work for 16 more years.   He was papal legate for all the Slavic peoples, consecrated a bishop and then given an ancient see (now in the Czech Republic).    When much of their former territory was removed from their jurisdiction, the Bavarian bishops retaliated with a violent storm of accusation against Methodius.    As a result, Emperor Louis the German exiled Methodius for three years.    Pope John VIII secured his release.   Because the Frankish clergy, still smarting, continued their accusations, Methodius had to go to Rome to defend himself against charges of heresy and uphold his use of the Slavonic liturgy. He was again vindicated.

Legend has it that in a feverish period of activity, Methodius translated the whole Bible into Slavonic in eight months.    He died on Tuesday of Holy Week, surrounded by his disciples, in his cathedral church.

Opposition continued after his death and the work of the brothers in Moravia was brought to an end and their disciples scattered.    But the expulsions had the beneficial effect of spreading the spiritual, liturgical and cultural work of the brothers to Bulgaria, Bohemia and southern Poland.    Patrons of Moravia and specially venerated by Catholic Czechs, Slovaks, Croatians, Orthodox Serbians and Bulgarians, Cyril and Methodius are eminently fitted to guard the long-desired unity of East and West.
