One Minute Reflection – 2 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” and Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels – Ephesians 4:1-6, Matthew 22:34-46

“Master, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” … Matthew 22:36

REFLECTION – “O Lord, what is it that you require of Your servants? “Take my yoke upon you,” you say. And what sort of yoke is this? “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” Now who would not willingly bear a yoke that does not press down but gives strength; a burden that does not weigh heavily but refreshes? As You rightly added: “And you will find rest” (Mt 11:29). And what is this yoke of Yours that does not tire but gives rest? It is the first and greatest of the commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart.” What could be easier, better or more agreeable than to love the goodness, beauty and love that is most perfectly Yours, O Lord my God?

Do You not offer a reward to those who keep the com­mandments, which are “more desirable than a heap of gold and sweeter than honey from the comb?” (Ps 19[18]:11) So in every way You offer a very ample reward, as James the apostle says: “The Lord has prepared the crown of life for those who love him” (Jas 1:12) (…) And Paul quotes these words from Isaiah: “No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor has the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9).

That first and great commandment is not only profitable for the man who keeps it or for God who commands it – the other commandments of God also make perfect, him who obeys them, improves him, instructs him and makes him illustrious; in a word, they make him good and holy. If you understand this, realise that you have been created for the glory of God and for your own eternal salvation; this is your end, this is the object of your soul and the treasure of your heart. Saints of the Day – 2 October – The Holy Guardian Angels

The Twelve Works of our Guardian Angel

According to Sacred Scripture
there are twelve works of charity
which our guardian Angel does for us.

THE FIRST is to rebuke us for our faults. According to the Book of Judges, Chapter 2, verse 1 – The Angel of the Lord ascends from Galgala to the place of those weeping and says: “I have led you forth from the land of Egypt . . . And you have not heard my voice.“

THE SECOND is to absolve us from the bonds of our sins. According to Book of Acts, Chapter 12, verse 7 – The Angel stood by . . . and the chains fell from his hands; yet this must be understood as disposing this to happen.

THE THIRD is to take away from us, those things impeding our progress in goodness, which is signified in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 12, verse 12 – where the Angel struck the first born of Egypt.

THE FOURTH is to constrain those demons afflicting us, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 12, verse 3 – “He chased the demon from my wife,” says Tobias of the Archangel St. Raphael.

THE FIFTH is to teach us, according to the Book of Daniel, Chapter 9, verse 22: – Now I have entered, to teach you and so that you might understand.

THE SIXTH is to reveal secrets, for according to the Book of Genesis, Chapter 18, verse 17 – the three Angels expressed the Mystery of the Trinity and Unity, after which God said: Can I conceal from Abraham what I am about to do?

THE SEVENTH is to console, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 5, verse 13 – Be of a strong spirit, it is nigh, that you are to be cured by God etc..

THE EIGHTH is to comfort us on the way to God, according to Third Book of Kings, Chapter 19, verse 7 – Rise and eat, for a grand way remains for you.

THE NINTH is to lead us forth on this way and to conduct us back to God, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 5, verse 15 – I shall lead and I shall lead him back etc..

THE TENTH is to cast down our enemies, according to the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 37, verse 36 – Having entered, the Angel of the Lord struck upon the camps of the Assyrians etc..

THE ELEVENTH to mitigate our temptations; and this is signified in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 32, verse 24 – where Jacob wrestled with the Angel and was comforted after the match, having accepted his blessing, the nerve of his femur withered up.

THE TWELFTH is to pray for us and to carry our prayers to God, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 12, verse 12 – When you were praying with tears . . . I offered your prayer etc.. All of these are the effects of our Guardian Angel’s care of us, on account of which, we ought to be submissive and grateful both to God and the Holy Angels.

Devotion for October,
The Month of the Most Holy Rosary

In 1885, Pope Leo XIII ordered the Rosary to be recited everyday during the month of October in every Parish Church and Cathedral, throughout the world.
Those of the faithful who could not be present at this recital he exhorted to say it with their families or in private.

How should we say the Rosary?

Properly,… and slowly, with a distinct pronunciation of the prayers and mysteries.
Devoutly, not only with the lips but also with the heart. More particularly, we ought to meditate upon the Mysteries that come before us, thus, at the Joyful Mysteries, we should think of the infinite love of God to men and on His humiliation for us, thanking Him and promising our love to Him in return.
At the Sorrowful Mysteries we should have compassion on the .
Saviour suffering for us, should, from the heart, detest the sins which were the cause of His sufferings and, make the most earnest resolutions for the future.
At the Glorious Mysteries, we should remember the glory which awaits us too, if we follow Jesus and Mary. (Fr Leonard Goffiné O.Praem (1648-1719)

Intention: “Relief for the Souls in Purgatory”

Oh Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Mother most merciful,
to thee do we plead the cause
of the poor suffering souls in Purgatory, e
specially those most abandoned.
In obedience to thy request at Fatima,
we beg for their relief.
Oh Mother most merciful,
we ask thee to lessen their toll of expiation.
Deign to accept our humble prayers
and sacrifice in reparation
and payment for the punishment
that is due from them.
We pray that through the treasures
of thy Divine Son,
thou own special merits and sorrows
and those of the Saints
that God may be mindful of our prayers

The Month of the Holy Rosary

“It is untrue to say that the Rosary is a monotomous prayer in that it neccessitates a constant repetition of the same formulae.
In the first place, recitation of these prayers should be accompanied by meditation on the principal Mysteries of our Religion.
Secondly, if we are inspired by love, the repetition of the same words can draw from them, each time, a new significance.

The Catholic who loves God and His Divine Mother, will be happy to call on his heavenly Father with filial confidence and to pray to the Blessed Virgin, with trust in her maternal protection.
An affectionate son does not find it boring to speak with his own Mother!”

REFLECTION – “Once indeed, God ejected the mortals and first parents of the human race from the paradise of Eden, when they had drunk deeply from the wine of disobedience and had become so affected by the hangover of sin, through the intoxication of that transgression, which led to the sleepiness of the mind’s eye. …

Then Adam and Eve, the founders of our race, exclaimed with a loud voice in great rejoicing: “Blessed are you, O daughter, who bore for us the penalties of the commands that had been broken. When you had gained a mortal body from us, you gave birth to a covering of immortality for us. You repaid us ,so that it might be well with us, since you received birth from our loins. From beyond the grave, you have called us back to our ancient seat: we closed paradise for ourselves but you made open the way of the Tree of Life. Through our actions, sadness came forth from happiness; through you, even more joyful things have returned, from sorrow. In what possible way could you be acceptable to death, O Immaculate one? The Holy Rosary

Accept, mighty Maid, we beseech thee,

Saint of the Day – 1 October – Blessed Christopher Buxton (1562–1588) Priest and Martyr

Saint of the Day – 1 October – Blessed Christopher Buxton (1562–1588) Priest and Martyr Born in 1562 in Tideswell, Derbyshire, England and died by being hanged, drawn and quartered on 1 October 1588 in Canterbury, Kent, England. Additional Memorial – 29 October as one of the Martyrs of Douai. Blessed Christopher was Beatified on 15 December 1929 by Pope Pius XI.

Christopher was a student of Nicholas Garlick (c 1555 – 24 July 1588) (another Priest, martyred in Derby in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I) at the Grammar School, Tideswell, Peak District. Garlick entered the English College at Rheims on 22 June 1581. Buxton arrived about a month later.

In 1584 he was sent to the English College in Rome where he was Ordained on 26 October 1586. He had a lengthy and difficult journey across Europe, calling in at Rheims on his way to Dieppe. Word had already reached the continent concerning the government’s plans to exile or execute the Priests then held in prison. A Dr. Darbishire in Paris directed Buxton to delay his departure for the time being and in obedience Christopher complied. But eventually Buxton crossed to Kent in early September 1587.

He was arrested in Kent about two months later and taken to the Marshalsea prison. On 15 August 1588, he was examined and cross-questioned, at which time he admitted he was a Priest. As he was so young, it was thought that his constancy might be shaken by the sight of the deaths of his fellow Priests and his life was offered to him, if he would conform to the new religion. But he answered, that he would not purchase a corruptible life, at such a price and that, if he had a hundred lives, he would willingly surreder them all, in defence of the One True Faith.

While in the Marshalsea Prison he wrote a Rituale, the manuscript of which is now preserved as a Relic at Olney, Buckinghamshire. He sent this manuscript to a Priest, as the last token of his friendship, the day before he was taken from prison. He was taken to Canterbury for trial and execution. Christopher died at the age of twenty-six.

Blessed Christopher Buxton was Beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.
