“The Perils of the Way”

+1. Out into the darkness of the night went Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Can these homeless wanderers really be the three whose value in the eyes of Heaven, made all the rest of the world insignificant as a grain of sand, compared with a Cntinent? Yes, this is God’s way of treating those whom He loves best!
Herod , in his luxurious palace, is feasting and revelling in luxury and ease whilst Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are outcasts from their home, shivering in the cold and stormy night.
How foolish then,, to desire ease and comfort or to regret the hardships and disagreeable event which befall me!

+2. Whither were they going To Egypt, along an unknown road to a distant and idolatrous Country; not knowing the way, not knowing how they should find subsistence from day to day.
What was the trial of Abraham compared with this? He went forth with an escort of servants and camels and with tents and a store of good things for the way; the Divine Son of God and His Parents, empty -handed and alone. Compassionate the Holy Family in their sufferings along the way.

+3. What were those sufferings?
Often, they knew not where to lay their heads and had to sleep under the starry sky. Often, they had to beg their bread. Sometimes, they were in danger from the rough bandits who infested the road. Sometimes, the wild beasts howled around them.
This is a model of the life of the Christian – sometimes, deprived of all spiritual sustenance and of all human consolation; sometimes, fiercely attacked by men, sometimes, by evil passions and the rage of Satan; yet, always safe under the watchful care of God!

“Upon this rock I will build My Church” – Matthew 16:18

REFLECTION – “You came here on the eve of the day when the Church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter in Rome. … Look at the pulpit from which the first Pope spoke to the first Christians, like myself in this moment. It was there, he incited them to vigilance against the devil, who, like a roaring lion, prowls around us and seeks who to devour (1 Pet 5:8-9). It was there, he exhorted them to keep firmness in faith, so as not to be dragged into the errors of false prophets (2 Pet 2:1; 3:17). This Papal teaching continues in his successors and will continue, immutable, through all time because this is the mission which Christ Himself has given to the Head of His Church.

To identify the universal and unwavering character of this teaching, the seat of spiritual primacy was, after a providential preparation, fixed in the City of Rome. God, according to the remark of our predecessor, Saint Leo the Great, united the peoples by His Providence in a single Empire, of which Rome was the capital, so that the Light of Truth, revealed for the salvation of all Peoples, would spread more efficaciously to all of its members (Sermon LXXXII C, 3-5).

Peter’s successors, mortal like all men, pass, more or less quickly. But the Primacy of Peter will always remain, thanks to the special assistance which was promised to him when Jesus charged him to confirm his brothers in faith (Lk 22:32). Whatever the name, the face, the human origins of each Pope; it is always Peter who lives in him, it is Peter who directs and governs, it is Peter especially, who teaches and who spreads to the world, the liberating Light. A great sacred orator said, that God established in Rome, an eternal pulpit: “Peter will always live in his successors and speak in his pulpit.” – Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) Pope from 1939 to 1958 (Pius XII Audience of 17 January 1940).

PRAYER – O God, Who together with the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven didst bestow on thy blessed Apostle Peter the pontifical power of binding and loosing, grant that by the aid of his intercession, we may be released from the bonds of our sins. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

O Peter, Who was Named by Christ!

For the Feast of the Chair of St Peter

O Peter who was named by Christ!
The guardian-shepherd of His flock,
Protect the Church He built on thee
To stand unyielding, firm on rock.

Thy weakness, Christ exchanged for strength,
Thou faltered but He made thee true.
He knew the greatness of thy love
And gave the keys of heav’n to thee.

Unseen, eternal Trinity,
We give Thee glory, praise Thy Name,

Saint of the Day – 18 January – St Deicolus (c530-625) Abbot

Saint of the Day – 18 January – St Deicolus of Lure (c530-625) Abbot, Founder of the Monastery at Lure, Companion and Disciple of St Columban, some believe Deicolus to be the older brother of St. Gall (c550-c645) who was also one of St Columban’s original 12 companions, Missionary. Born in Leinster, Ireland and died in 625 at Vosges, France of natural causes. Patronages – curing of children’s illnesses, protector of livestock. Also known as – Deel, Deicolo, Deicola, Deille, Delle, Desle, Dichul, Diey, Deicuil, Dicuil.

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “In Brittany, St Deicola, Abbot, disciple of St Columban.”

The Life of St Deicolus

Born in Leinster, Deicolus and his brother, Gall, studied at Bangor Abbey in County Down. He was selected to be one of the twelve disciples to accompany St Columbanuon his missionary journey.

In 576 he journeyed to France and laboured with Columban in Austrasia and Burgundy. Deicolus is believed to have resided with Columban at the Monastery of Luxeuil from c590.

In 610, when Columban was expelled by King Theuderic II, Deicolus, then eighty years of age, determined to follow his master,but was forced, to abandon the journey due to the inadeguacies of his age and remained behind alone.

Diecolus establishing a hermitage at a nearby Church dedicated to Saint Martin in a place called Lure, in the Diocese of Besançon.

Until his death, he became the apostle of this district, where he was given a Church and a tract of land by Berthelde, widow of Weifar, the lord of Lure. Soon a noble Abbey was erected for his many disciples and the Rule of St Columban was adopted.

Numerous miracles are recorded of Deicolus, including the suspension of his cloak on a sunbeam and the taming of wild beasts.

Clothaire II, the King of Burgundy, recognised the virtues of Deicolus and considerably enriched the Abbey of Lure, also granting Deicolus the manor, woods, fisheries, of the Town which had grown around the Monastery.

Feeling his end approaching, Deicolus conceded the government of his Abbey to Columban, one of his young Monks and retreated to a little Oratory he had built a in honour of the Holy Trinity, where he died on 18 January c625.

His Feast is observed on this day, his birthday into Heaven. So revered was his memory that his name Diacolus, under the shortened French form of Del or Deel and Deela, (being corrupted from Del de Lure) is still borne by many of the children of the Lure district and too, is often found there as a surname. St Diacolus’ cultus is strong in the area of Lure where a Spring associated with St Diacolus has miraculous properties and, in particular, to cure children’s ailments if their garments were washed in this water.

Saint Deicolus is considered a Saint who heals illnesses in young children but also a regarded as a protector of livestock. There are mirackes associated with a wild bear which I have been unable to trace. A pilgrimage takes place today 18 January, to the Chapel of Gerbamont where he died.

His memory is also perpetuated in several other Lorraine Villages. His Vita and Acts were written by a Monk of his own Monastery in the 10th Century.

Feast of the Chair of the Apostle, St Peter at Rome, Notre-Dame de Dijon / Our Lady of Dijon (1513), St Prisca, Virgin Martyr and Memorials of the Saints – 18 January

Feast of the Chair of the Apostle, St Peter at Rome:
This Feast was instituted to commemorate the establishment of the Holy See at Rome.
In 1960, Pope John XXIII removed from the General Roman Calendar, the 18 January Feast of the Chair of Peter at Rome.
Two Liturgical Feasts were celebrated in Rome, in Honour of Chairs of Saint Peter, one of which was kept in the Baptismal Chapel of St Peter’s Basilica, the other at the Catacomb of Priscilla. The dates of these celebrations are 18 January and 22 February.
The two Feasts were included in the Tridentine Calendar with the rank of Double which, in 1604, Pope Clement VIII raised to the rank of Greater Double.
Those traditional Catholics. who do not accept the changes made by Pope John XXIII et al, continue to celebrate both Feast days: “Saint Peter’s Chair at Rome” on 18 January and the “Chair of Saint Peter at Antioch” on 22 February.

St Archelais the Martyr

Blessed Beatrix d’Este the Younger (c1230-1262) French Benedictine Nun, Founded a Convent. Beatified in 1774 by Pope Clement XIV. Her memorial date was decreed by Pope Pius VI for today.
The Roman Martyrology states: “In Ferrara, Blessed Beatrice d’Este, Nun, who, on the death of her future husband, having renounced the kingdom of this world, consecrated herself to God in a Monastery founded by herself under the rule of Saint Benedict.”

St Catus

Blessed Cristina Ciccarelli OSA (1481–1543) Religious of the Order of Saint Augustine, Mystic, Stigmatist, Apostle of the poor, Reformer, she had a had a particular devotion to the Eucharist and to the Passion and Death of Christ, she was granted the gift of Prophecy, visions and levitation. Beatified in 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI .
