IIth Day – The First Sin

God spared not the angels who sinned
(2 St Peter ii:4)

+1. There was a time when sin was unknown in God’s universe. All creatures obeyed Him and were happy and at peace. Thousands and tens of thousands of Holy Angels showed forth the glory of God by their joyful obedience.
Created in a state of supernatural grace, they were each, in his own degree, full of wisdom, of perfect beauty.

+2. Their trial during their time of probation consisted in having to acknowledge their dependence on and their subjection to, God. The larger number of them did so in a spirit of loyal, loving and unwavering obedience. But a third portion of them, led by Lucifer, refused to obey. They conceived an inordinate love of themselves and, from this arose a desire to be independent of God. They would not humble themselves, they considered it unworthy that they should submit to the Will of God in all things. Thus, pride grew up within them and they deliberately placed themselves in opposition to God.

+3. This open rebellion against God, lasted but a moment!
În an instant all their supernatural beauty was gone, the malice of their souls corrupted their whole being! All their beauty was turned to loathsome foulness! Cast out of God’s Heaven, they were hurled down to the lowest hell; outcasts for all eternity, filled with eternal misery and despair.
And all this – the effect of one sin and that, a sin of thought!
Beg of God an appreciation, of the unspeakable evil of pride, of sin!

The Hymn Inviolata has been claimed by the Carmelite Order, as a Traditional Hymn originating within their ranks. The Hymn is also used by Dominican Friars in the chanting of Compline. Its origins trace to the 11th Century. It appears in Hymnals from 1860 to 1920.

REFLECTION – “The degeneration caused by sin had obscured the beauty of our original nobility. But when, the mother of Supreme Beauty is born, our nature finds its purity once more and sees itself moulded according to the perfect model, worthy of God (Gn 1:26) … We had all preferred the world below to that above. There no longer remained any hope of salvation. The state of our nature cried aloud to Heaven to come to the rescue … Then at last, in His good pleasure, the world’s Divine Artificer determined to make a new world appear, a different world full of harmony and youth.

Now, was it not fitting that a most pure virgin, without stain, should place herself at the service of this mysterious plan, first of all? … And where was this virgin to be found, if not in this woman, alone of her kind, chosen by the world’s Creator before all generations? Yes, she indeed is Mother of God, divinely named Mary, whose womb gave birth to God Incarnate and whom, He, Himself, had supernaturally prepared as His Temple…

In this way, then, the design of the Redeemer of our race was to bring about a birth and, as it were, a new creation to replace the one which went before. Therefore, just as in Paradise, He had taken a litle clay out of the pure and spotless earth, to fashion the first Adam (Gn 2:7), so, at the moment of bringing about His own Incarnation, He made use of another earth, so to speak, namely this pure and immaculate Virgin, chosen from among all other beings He had created. It is in her that He, Adam’s Creator, has remade us in our very substance and become a new Adam (1 Cor 15:45) that the old, might be saved by the new and eternal.” – St Andrew of Crete (c650-c730) Bishop and Father of the Church (Sermon 1 for the Nativity of the Mother of God).

PRAYER – O God, Who by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin, prepared a worthy dwelling for Thy Son, we humbly beseech Thee that, recalling the apparition of the same Virgin, we may obtain health for both soul and body. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Saint of the Day – 11 February – Saint Castrensis (5th Century) Bishop

Saint of the Day – 11 February – Saint Castrensis (5th Century) Bishop of Carthage and then in Italy, of Castel Volturno or Sessa Aurunca. Patronages – All in Italy: Castel Volturno, Marano di Napoli, the City and Archdiocese of Monreale, San Castrese di Sessa Aurunca. Also known as – Castrensis of Sessa, Castrensis of Campania, Castrensis of Africa, Castrense… Castrese… Castrenze… Additional Memorial – 1 September as one of the Exiles of Campania; in Castel Volturno he is celebrated in August; in Capua on 29 December and on the 2nd Sunday in May, as the date of the translation of his Relics.

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Capua, St Castrensis, Bishop.”

Castrensis who lived around the 5th Century, is remembered in the “Marble Calendar” of Naples even though very little is known about him.

During the persecution of the Vandals led by Genseric (390-477), together with other Priests and faithful, he was sent off embarked on an old ship without a rudder, an anchor and cables, with the aim of drowning all on board. But they landed miraculously in Campania, Italy on 10 May, where he began to carry out his Apostolate.

It is uncertain whether he was the Bishop of Castel Volturno or Sessa Aurunca but he led the faithful of his City with love and zeal.

Biographers report two miraculous prodigies performed by him during his life and the liberation of a man possessed by the devil and the saving of a ship full of people (both episodes are depicted in two Mosaic panels in the Cathedral of Monreale, see below). The inscription above the Mosaics says:
“He saves the sailors and rescues them from the anger of the demon which he had forced to go out from the body of the posessed man.”

Castrensis died at the end of the 5th Century “among his people, after having celebrated the Mysteries and having descended, by himself, into the tomb” and was immediately venerated by the people throughout Campania and in many other regions.

He was considered a martyr because he was depicted in some paintings, discovered around 1881 in a cave in Calvi (Caserta) and dating to the 7th Century, together with the Martyr Priscus.

The Archbishop of Capua, Alfano, who had to accompany Princess Giovanna, daughter of King Henry II of England and sister of Richard the Lionheart, to Palermo, brought as a wedding gift to King William II, the body of St Castrensis without the head which remained in Capua (see Vita di Guglielmo II , Palermo 1770).

The Relics are today preserved in the Cathedral of Monreale, in the Chapel of the same name , inside a silver urn made by Cardinal Cosimo Torres, in 1637. On the plaque of the urn one can read:
“ St Castrensis, eternal Bastion of the City of Monreale. ”

Castrensis is highly venerated in Castel Volturno (Caserta), where, in August, a procession along the river, is held in his honour. In Capua, which celebrates St Castrensis on 29 December and the second Sunday of May, the date of the translation).

A large number of Christians tortured and murdered in Numidia (part of modern Algeria) during the persecutions of Diocletian but whose names and individual lives have not survived. They were ordered to surrender their sacred books to be burned. They refused. Martyrs. c 303 in Numidia.

Martyrs of Africa – 5 Saints: A group of five Christians who were Martyred together; we know nothing else but the names of four of them – Cyriacus, Oecominius, Peleonicus and Zoticus.
