St Daniel Comboni (1831-1881)

“I have great doubts about the salvation of those
who do not have special devotion to Mary.”

“When you pray, hear Mass, sit at table, engage in business
and when at bedtime you remove your clothes—
at all times yearn that by the pain which He felt when He was stripped
just before His crucifixion, He may strip us of our evil habits of mind.
Thus, naked of earthly things, we may also embrace the cross.”

St Francis Borgia (1510-1572)

“Our life is in God’s hands,
He does what He wants,
by an irrevocable gift,
we have sacrificed
our lives to Him.
Blessed be He.”our life is in god's hands - st daniel comboni - 10 oct 2018

“In Jesus crucified we are taken into the depths of God.   It is there that we come to understand most deeply the love God has for us and the absolute lengths to which God goes to give us life, even in our moments of darkness and defeat.

hat we see in the passion of Jesus is a love that gathers in all the scattered, shattered pieces of our life and heals them with a tenderness that can break our hearts.

What we see in the cross is a love that loses nothing that can be saved, whether that be our defeats, our brokenness, or our shame.   With God all these can be points of life for us and the reason is startling –

God can kiss us with a healing because God is wounded by our pain.”

Thought for the Day – 9 October – The Memorial of St Louis Bertrand O.P. (1526-1581) “Apostle of South America”

In Catholic iconography, St Louis Bertrand is often portrayed holding a chalice from which serpents are emerging.  In the other hand, he displays a crucifix with a pistol at its base.   These articles call to mind two stories from the great saint’s life when God miraculously saved him from attempts on his life by vile would-be assassins.   The first recalls the story of Brother Louis’ where a native priest gave him a chalice of poison for Mass.   Louis made the sign of the Cross over the toxic potion and serpents sprang from the chalice, thus revealing its true contents and saving his life.

The second object – the crucifix/pistol – recalls another account of near-martyrdom in the life of St Louis Bertrand.   Set upon by a crazed gunman, St Louis calmly made the conquering sign of the Cross.   With this most basic gesture of our faith, the barrel of the gun miraculously turned into a crucifix.

“If because of your preaching men lay aside enmities, forgive injuries, avoid occasions of sin and scandals and reform their conduct, you may say that the seed has fallen on good ground.   But to God alone give all the glory and acknowledge yourselves ever unprofitable servants.”

“Let the whole world of mankind tremble,
the whole world shake
and the heavens exult when Christ,
the Son of the living God,
is on the altar in the hands of a priest.
O admirable heights and sublime lowliness!
O sublime humility! O humble sublimity!
That the Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God,
so humbles Himself that for our salvation,
He hides Himself under the little form of bread!
Look, brothers, at the humility of God
and pour out your hearts before Him!
Humble yourselves, as well,
that you may be exalted by Him.
Therefore, hold back nothing
of yourselves, for yourselves,

Thought for the Day – 3 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:57–62

To another he said, “Follow me.”   But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”...Luke 9:59-60

Following and accompanying Christ, staying with Him, demands “coming out of ourselves”, requires us to be outgoing – to come out of ourselves, out of a dreary way of living faith that has become a habit, out of the temptation to withdraw into our own plans which end by shutting out God’s creative action.

God came out of Himself to come among us, He pitched his tent among us to bring to us His mercy that saves and gives hope.
If we want to follow Him and to remain with Him, we too must “go out” with Him to seek the lost sheep, the one that has strayed the furthest.

To come out always!   And to do so with God’s love and tenderness, with respect and with patience, knowing that God takes our hands, our feet, our heart and guides them and makes all our actions fruitful...

Thought for the Day – 27 September – The Memorial of St Vincent de Paul C.M. (1581-1660)

From “Conferences to the Priests of the Mission”
by St Vincent de Paul (Conference 207).

It is not enough to love God if my neighbour does not love Him.

“Our vocation is to go and enflame the heart of men, to do what the Son of God did, He who brought fire into the world to set it alight with His love.   What else can we wish for, than for it to burn and consume all things?

Thus it is true that I have been sent not only to love God but also to make men love Him.

It is not enough to love God if my neighbour does not love Him.   I must love my neighbour as the image of God and the object of His love and do everything so that in their turn men love their Creator who knows and considers them as His brothers, whom He has saved, I must obtain that they love each other with mutual love, out of love for God who loved them to the point of abandoning to death His very Son.   So that is my duty.   Now, if it is true that we are called to bear God’s love near and far, if we must set nations alight, if our vocation is to go and spread this divine fire in the whole world, if it is so, my brothers, if it is really so, how must I myself burn of this divine fire!

How can we give love to others, if we do not have it among us?   Let us look if it is so, not generally but if each one has it within himself, in due amount, because if love is not on fire in us, if we do not love each other as Jesus Christ loved us and if we do not act as He did, how can we hope to spread such love throughout the world?   You cannot give what you do not have.  The precise duty of charity consists in doing to others what you reasonably would like done to yourself.   Do I really behave towards my neighbour as I wish he would towards me?

Let us look at the Son of God.   Only our Lord can be so taken by love for creatures so much as to leave His Father’s throne and take a body subject to infirmity.  And why?   In order to establish among us, with His word and example, the love of our neighbours. This is the love that led Him to the Cross and accomplished the wonderful work of our redemption.  If we had a little of such love, would we stay here with folded arms?   Oh! no, love can not remain barren, it urges us to obtain salvation and relief for others.”

Prayer for Vocations
By St Vincent de Paul

O Lord,
send good workers to Your Church,
but may they be good!
Send good missionaries
to work in Your vineyard,
labourers, O my God,
such as they ought to be:
utterly detached from themselves,
their own comfort,
and worldly goods.
Let them even be few in number,
provided that they are good.
O Lord, grant this grace
to Your Church.

Thought for the Day – 26 September – The Memorial of Blessed Louis Tezza M.I. (18  41-1923

Blessed Louis Tezza’s message can be readily understood in the light of the gospel. Jesus had a special concern for the sick, and furthermore he identified personally with his suffering brothers:   “I was sick and you visited me. In so far as you this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me” (Mt.25.40)

Blessed Louis was chosen by God not only to live this charism of mercy for the sick but to spread it through the founding of the Institute of the Daughters of S. Camillus, an institute dedicated to care for human life from the moment of conception to natural death.   He showed every Christian how to act in the face of suffering – to care and alleviate and especially to value it for one’s own sanctification and the redemption of others.

Fr Louis encourages us to believe in and operate in accordance with God’s plan for each one of us.   The cornerstone of his existence was obedience to God  . He was constantly seeking the will of God and striving to carry it out in his life.   He could see God’s plan in the signs of the times, the ordinary events of life, in the decisions of his superiors and he was convinced that these had to be followed no matter what the cost in personal sacrifice.

He leaves each one of us today with this personal challenge, in the hope that we will make it our own:

“God’s invitation to become saints is for all, not just a few.
Sanctity therefore must be accessible to all.
In what does it consist? In a lot of activity? No.
In doing extraordinary things? No, this could not be for everybody and at all times.
Therefore, sanctity consists in doing good, and in doing this “good” in whatever condition and place God has placed us.
Nothing more, nothing outside of this”.

“Blessed Luigi Tezza, glorious example of a life totally dedicated to the exercise of charity and mercy towards those who suffer in body and spirit.   For them he founded the Institute of the Daughters of St Camillus, whom he taught to practice an absolute confidence in the Lord.   “The will of God! Behold my only guide”, he exclaimed, “the only goal of my desires, for which I wish to sacrifice everything”.   In his confident abandonment to the will of God, he took as his model the Blessed Virgin Mary, tenderly loved and contemplated particularly in the moment of the “fiat” and in her silent presence at the foot of the Cross.”… (St Pope John Paul at the Beatification of Blessed Louis) Vatican.va

“This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace,
continues uninterruptedly, from the consent,
which she loyally gave, at the Annunciation
and which she sustained, without wavering beneath the Cross,
until the eternal fulfilment of all the elect.

Taken up to heaven, she did not lay aside this saving office
but by her manifold intercession, continues to bring us
the gifts of eternal salvation. By her maternal charity,
she cares for the brethren of her Son,
who still journey on earth, surrounded by dangers and difficulties,
until they are led into their blessed home.

Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church
under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress and Mediatrix.
This, however, is so understood,
that it neither takes away anything from,
nor adds anything to,
the dignity and efficacy of Christ the one Mediator.”

One Minute Reflection – 24 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16–18

One Minute Reflection – 24 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16–18 – Monday of the Twenty fifth week in Ordinary Time, Year B

“No one after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.”…Luke 8:16

REFLECTION – “Christ,” wrote a Father of the Church, (Saint John Chrysostom), “has left us in this world to be like lamps…, to act like leaven…, to become seed, to bear fruit.”   If our lives were to have this kind of impact, we would not need to open our mouths.  Words would be unnecessary if we could show our works.   There wouldn’t be a single pagan left if we were truly christians.
We should avoid making the mistake of thinking that the apostolate consists, in the witness of a few pious practices.   We are christians, you and I but at the same time and without resolution of continuity, we are citizens and fellow-workers at very clear obligations, which we are to carry out in an exemplary fashion if we want to become holy once and for all.   It is Jesus Christ who urges us: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.   Nor do they light a lamp and then set it under a bushel basket;  it is set on a lampstand , where it gives light to all in the house.   Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Mt 5:14-16)….Saint Josémaria Escriva de Balaguer (1902-1975) Homily in Amigos de Diosno one after lighting a lamp luke 8 16 - christ wrote st john chrysostom - st josemaria - 24 sept 2018

“All of us who have received Baptism, pray that the Holy Spirit help us not to fall into these bad habits that cover the light and that He help us to carry forward, the light we received freely, that light of God that does so much good – the light of friendship, the light of meekness, the light of faith, the light of hope, the light of patience, the light of goodness.”…Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 19 September 2016all of us who have received baptism - pope francis 24 sept 2018

PRAYER – Lord, be the beginning and the end of all that we do, all that we say, in every moment be our Light.   Prompt our actions with Your grace and complete them with Your all-powerful love.   May we always seek Your Face in every circumstance, in every moment, so that Your Light may become our life.   Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek, you lived your life in the Presence of the Holy Face of Christ our Lord, please intercede for us and for all the world.   We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.bl-anton-martin-pray-for-us

Thought for the Day – 31 July – The Memorial of St Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556)

Ignatius was a true mystic.   He centered his spiritual life on the essential foundations of Christianity—the Trinity, Christ, the Eucharist.   His spirituality is expressed in the Jesuit motto, Ad majorem Dei gloriam—“for the greater glory of God.”   In his concept, obedience was to be the prominent virtue, to assure the effectiveness and mobility of his men.   All activity was to be guided by a true love of the Church and unconditional obedience to the Holy Father, for which reason all professed members took a fourth vow to go wherever the pope should send them for the salvation of souls.

Luther nailed his theses to the church door at Wittenberg in 1517.   Seventeen years later, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society that was to play so prominent a part in the Catholic Reformation.   He was an implacable foe of Protestantism.   Yet the seeds of ecumenism may be found in his words:  “Great care must be taken to show forth orthodox truth in such a way that if any heretics happen to be present they may have an example of charity and Christian moderation.   No hard words should be used nor any sort of contempt for their errors be shown.”  ( Fr Don Miller, OFM)

Thought for the Day – 10 July – Tuesday of the Fourteenth Week of Ordinary Time, Year B – Today’s Gospel: Matthew 9:32-38

“The harvest is abundant…Matthew 9:37”
St John Chrysostom (347-407) Father & Doctor

“All the farmer’s work naturally leads towards the harvest.   So how could Christ call a ‘harvest’ a work that was still in its initial stages?   Idolatry reigned over all the earth… Everywhere there was fornication, adultery, debauchery, greed, theft, wars…  The earth was filled with so many evils!   No seed had yet been sown there.   The thorns, thistles and weeds that covered the ground had not yet been pulled up.   The ground had not yet been ploughed, no furrow had yet been drawn.

So how could Jesus say that the harvest was abundant? … The apostles were probably distressed and frustrated:  “How are we going to be able to say anything, to stand upright before so many people?   How can we, the Eleven, correct all the inhabitants of the earth?   Will we who are so ignorant be able to approach scholars;  will we who are so stripped of everything be able to meet armed men; will we who are subordinates be able to approach people in authority?   We know only one language – will we be able to argue with the barbarians who speak foreign languages?   Who will bear with us if they don’t even understand our language?”

Jesus did not want such reasoning to discourage them.   So He called the Gospel a harvest.   It is as if He told them:  “Everything is prepared, all the preparations have been made.   I am sending you out to harvest the ripe grain.   You will be able to sow and reap on the same day.”

When the farmer leaves his home to go out and gather the harvest, he is brimming over with joy and shining with happiness.   He thinks neither of the suffering nor the difficulties that he might encounter…  Christ says, lend me your tongue and you will see the ripe grain going into the king’s granaries.   And so He then sends them out, telling them:  “I am with you always, until the end of the world.” (Mt 28:20)christ says, lend me your tongue - i am with you always - matthew 28 20 - st john chrysostom - 10 july 2018

Thought for the Day – 5 June – The Memorial of St Boniface (672-754) “The Apostle of Germany” – Martyr

An excerpt from a letter by St Boniface (672-754) “The Apostle of Germany”, Bishop and Martyr:

“Let us stand fast in what is right and prepare our souls for trial.
Let us wait upon God’s strengthening aid and say to Him:
“O Lord, you have been our refuge in all generations.”
Let us trust in Him, who has placed this burden upon us.
What we ourselves cannot bear, let us bear with the help of Christ.
For He is all-powerful and He tells us:
“My yoke is easy and my burden light.”
Let us continue the fight, on the day of the Lord.
The days of anguish and of tribulation have overtaken us.
If God so wills,
“let us die for the holy laws of our fathers,”
so that we may deserve, to obtain an eternal inheritance with them.
Let us be neither dogs that do not bark,
nor silent onlookers,
nor paid servants,
who run away before the wolf.
Instead, let us be careful shepherds,
watching over Christ’s flock.
Let us preach the whole of God’s plan,
to the powerful and to the humble,
to rich and to poor,
to men of every rank and age,
as far as God gives us the strength, in season and out of season.”
