DAY SEVEN – NOVENA in honour of the EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS – 11 September

Total Offering

Jesus our Lord, You refused to drink the vinegar offered by the soldiers.
We know that this offering was to alleviate Your sufferings
because this drink lessens the pain, acting as anesthesia.
You refused as You wanted to feel the pain throughout the time
You hung on the cross.   You did not want to lessen Your sacrifice.
Help us, O Lord, to bear the pains of everyday life.
Let us savour our sufferings so that we may be able to live Your Holy Cross.
Inspire us not to run away but to accept and experience
all our sufferings and pain as proof of our love for You
and as reparation for our sins and the sins of the whole world.
Help us live our pain, help us to live Your Holy Cross. Amen

DAILY PRAYER:

Dear Lord Jesus
Who because of Your burning love for us willed to be crucified
and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption
and salvation of our souls,
to bear the sins of all the history of humanity,
from Adam to the end of time.
look down upon us and grant the petition we ask
…………….( mention your intention)
We trust completely in Your Mercy.
Cleanse us from sin by Your Grace,
sanctify our work,
give us and all those who are dear to us,
our daily bread, lighten the burden of our sufferings,
bless our families,
and grant to the nations, so sorely afflicted,
Your Peace, which is the only true peace,
so that by obeying Your Commandments
we may come at last to the glory of Heaven.

O Cross, you are the glorious sign of victory.
Through your power may we share
in the triumph of Christ Jesus. Amen
Glory Be. (3x)day-seven-novena-holy-cross-total-offering-11-sept

Redemptive Suffering

Jesus, Your mother and other women surrounded You
while you were dying on the cross.
Your mother nonetheless accepted this agony,
believing that this was part of the divine plan,
that God had the power to draw good
from this terrible experience of failure.
Your mother’s faith in You inspires us.
We pray for her intercession as we face
situations of failure and suffering.
We know that You are always with us
and so we pray for the grace to face
with courage, our trials and hardships,
and offer our sufferings
in union with Yours.
Please strengthen our faith as we live through
the difficulties and uncertainties of this life. Amen

Patience and Silence in Suffering

Jesus, You hung on the cross of three hours
and Your executioners insulted You,
saying that You cannot save Yourself and others.
You could have used Your powers
but preferred to keep silent
and bear the insults of Your enemies.

Teach us the virtue of patience as we bear the insults
and harsh words of people who don’t like us.
Inspire us to respond with silence
and give us the grace that we may be able to pray for them.
In this way, through our patience,
we help You redeem our troubled world. Amen

The compassion of the suffering Christ

Jesus our Christ, whilst You hung on the cross,
You forgave those who were laughing at You
and asked Your beloved disciple to take care of Your mother.
You welcomed the good thief into paradise.
You continued to be compassionate and serve others fully.
You did not allow the terrible pain to hinder Your love.
Give us the special grace not to be desperate in our moments of sufferings.
Enable us to bear pain with courage and dignity,
to, even in the midst of pain,
to be of help and service to others. Amen

DAY THREE – NOVENA in honour of the EXALTATION of the HOLY CROSS – 7 September

Jesus suffers humiliation

Jesus, you manifested Your power through Your miracles
but in carrying the Cross, You showed
that God preferred to be humility than to be conquest.
You were beaten and spat upon,
mocked and derided.
You suffered humiliation for love of all
as You struggled under the weight of the heavy Cross.
You did this to show Your oneness with the powerless of the earth.
You took the side of the helpless
and You shamed the arrogant and the powerful.
May we, Lord, in our relationship with our brothers and sisters,
avoid domineering attitudes and instead, be of service to them.
May the glory of your cross help us understand
that hearts can never be conquered through imposition or arrogance
but through disinterested service.
Make us servants to one another
and may self-giving characterize our relationships with all.
Amen.

Jesus Falls and Simon of Cyrene Assists Him in carrying the Cross

Jesus, you fell three times while carrying Your cross.
You were exhausted by the tortures and the lack of sleep
and Your executioners had to ask the help of Simon the Cyrene
to help You carry the cross.  You were nearly dead when you reached Calvary.
Simon of Cyrene was the most blessed person
because he was transformed by helping You carry Your cross.
Make us remember, dear Jesus, in our moments of suffering and trials,
that we, too, help carry Your cross and that it is an honour to suffer with You.
Give us hearts that easily respond to the sufferings around us,
believing that when we help the needy and the abandoned,
we are actually serving You. Amen

‘Jesus Carries the Cross’

Jesus our Lord, You carried Your cross through the streets of Jerusalem,
with Your head bloodied by the crown of thorns.
Your enemies mocked You and your friends abandoned You.
You carried the cross, the sins of all humanity,
on Your shoulders and in the silence of Your sufferings, we are reborn.
Jesus our Lord, You taught us that we should also carry others’ sins.
to suffer in silence, yet our sufferings can make reparation for our sins
and the sins of all the word.
Teach us, O Lord, to accept situations that we cannot change
and carry them as you carried Your cross
through the streets of Jerusalem. Amen

Announcing a Novena for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 14 September

Announcing a Novena for the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross on 14 Septemberannuncing a novena - exalatation of the cross

AnaStpaul's avatarAnaStpaul

This feast was observed in Rome before the end of the seventh century.   It commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which had been placed on Mount Calvary by St. Helena and preserved in Jerusalem but then had fallen into the hands of Chosroas, King of the Persians.   The precious relic was recovered and returned to Jerusalem by Emperor Heralius in 629.

The lessons from the Breviary tell us that Emperor Heraclius carried the Cross back to Jerusalem on his shoulders.   He was clothed with costly garments and with ornaments of precious stones.   But at the entrance to Mount Calvary a strange incident occurred. Try as hard as he would, he could not go forward. Zacharias, the Bishop of Jerusalem, then said to the astonished monarch:  “Consider, O Emperor, that with these triumphal ornaments you are far from resembling Jesus carrying His Cross.”   The…

Our Morning Offering – 20 August – The Memorial of St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) “Doctor of Light”

On the Feast Day of St Bernard, can we do better than call on our Mother?

The Memorare
By St Bernard (1090-1153) “Doctor of Light”

REMEMBER,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled
to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins,
my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions
but in thy mercy
hear and answer me.
Amen.

Our Morning Offering – 14 July – Saturday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time, Year B

Sweet Light!
By St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (1891-1942)

Who are You,
sweet Light, that fills me
And illumines
the darkness of my heart?
You lead me like a mother’s hand,
And should You let go of me,
I would not know
how to take another step.
You are the space
That embraces my being
and buries it in Yourself.
Away from You,
it sinks into the abyss
Of nothingness,
from which You raised it to the light.
You, nearer to me than I to myself
And more interior
than my most interior
And still impalpable
and intangible
And beyond any name,
Holy Spirit eternal love!

DAY NINE
GOD The Evangeliser (Holy Spirit)

SCRIPTURAL READING
“Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.   At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.   They were astounded and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?  Then how does each one of us hear them in his own native language?”…(Acts 2, 5-8)

MEDITATION
“Jesus said to them:  ‘The times and occasions are set by my Father’s own authority and it is not for you to know when they will be.   But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”…(Acts 1, 7-8)

PRAYER
Lord Holy Spirit,
come down upon Your sons and daughters
who proclaim the message of salvation.
Perform miracles in the sky above
and wonders on the earth below.
That people of every race and nation
will believe in Christ Jesus, our Savior.
Come, Holy Spirit, we plead;
make us holy as Our Father.
Guide us in our pilgrim way,
for without You no fruits will be gathered,
with You all things come true.
Eternal Holy Spirit,in Your mercy,
please grant my special petition:
…………………….(mention your petition)
Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
our first beginning and our last end,
You have made us after Your own image and likeness.
Grant that all the thoughts of my mind,
all the words of my mouth,
all the affections of my heart
and all my actions be always conformed to Your holy Will.
After having seen You here below in Your manifestations and by faith,
may I come at last to see You face to face,
in the perfect possession of You forever in heaven.
Amen

Almighty and Everlasting God, by the profession of the true faith, You have given us, Your servants, grace to acknowledge the glory of the Eternal Trinity and in the power of Your Divine Majesty, to worship the Unity.   We beg You to grant that, by our fidelity in this same faith, we may always be defended from all dangers.   Through Christ our Lord. DAY EIGHT
GOD The Divine Mercy (Jesus)

SCRIPTURAL READING
“They went about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick on mats to where ever they heard He was.   Whatever villages or towns or countryside He entered, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might touch only the tassel on His cloak;  and as many as touched it were healed.”...(Mk. 6:55-56)

MEDITATION
“Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people who had all kinds of diseases and sickness.   The news about Him spread through the whole country of Syria, so that people brought to Him all those who were sick, suffering from all kinds of diseases and disorders:  people with demons and epileptics and paralytics – Jesus healed them all.”…(Mt. 4, 23-24)

PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ,
You showed Your love and compassion
for the poor and the sick,
curing everyone who came to You in faith, or in hope.
No one who appealed to You, was ever disappointed,
be they believers or not – both saints and sinners.
Please pour down Your mercies upon us
who are sick and wounded in the struggles
we face in life.
Have mercy on us Lord,
on our infirmities caused by human frailty and sinfulness.
Touch Lord, our aching bodies and spirits
with Your merciful love.
Bless me through the love with which You plead for us
before the throne of God,
bless me in the Blessed Sacrament
with which You give Yourself to us in Holy Communion.
Grant that all this love and bitter pain,
may not be lost on me.

DAY SEVEN
GOD The Provider (Father)
“Gives us this day our daily bread”

SCRIPTURAL READING
When Jesus had said this, He raised His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come.   Give glory to Your Son, so that Your Son may glorify You.   Just as You gave Him authority over all people, so that He may give eternal life to all You gave Him.   Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God and the one whom You sent, Jesus Christ.   I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that You gave Me to do. Now glorify Me, Father, with You, with the glory that I had with You before the world began.
“I revealed Your name to those whom You gave Me out of the world.   They belonged to You and You gave them to me and they have kept Your word.   Now they know that everything You gave Me, is from You, because the words You gave to Me I have given to them and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from You and they have believed that You sent Me.”…(Jn. 17:1-8)

MEDITATION
“So do not start worrying:   Where will my food come from?   Or my drink?   Or my clothes?   These are the things the pagans are always concerned about.   Your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things.   Instead be concerned about everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what He required of you and He will provide You with all those other things.   So do not worry about tomorrow;  it will have enough worries of its own.   There is no need to add to the trouble each day brings.”… (Mt. 6:31-34)

PRAYER
We praise and thank You, Father
for Your unfailing gift of Divine Providence.
You feed the birds of the air
and clothe the lilies of the field.
But You provide so much more generously
for Your sons and daughters, who obey and follow Your will.
Bless we pray, the poor and the needy,
not only with spiritual gifts
but also with food, to sustain body
and soul and with their other earthly needs.
Eternal Father in Your mercy,
please grant my special petition:
…………………….(mention your petition)
Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. SCRIPTURAL READING
While meeting with them, He enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak; for John baptized you with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.   And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim…(Acts 1:4-5, 2:3-4)

MEDITATION
“It is best for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send Him to you.   And when He comes, He will prove to the people that they were wrong about sin and about what is right and about God’s judgement.   They are wrong about sin because they did not believe in Me; they are wrong about what is right because I am going to the Father.”…(Jn. 16:7-8)

Come, Holy Spirit, we pray.

SCRIPTURAL READING
He has provided us a mighty Saviour, a descendant of His servant David.   He promised through His holy prophets long ago, that He would save us from our enemies, from the power of all those who hate us.   He said He would show mercy to our ancestors and remember His sacred covenant.   With a solemn oath to our ancestor Abraham, He promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve Him without fear, so that we might be holy and righteous before Him all the days of our life in His presence...(Lk. 1:69-75)

MEDITATION
Do not be afraid Mary, God has been gracious to you.   You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus.   He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God.’   Mary said to the angel, ‘ I am a virgin, how then can this be?’ The angel answered:  ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you and God’s power will rest upon you.   For this reason, the holy Child will be called the Son of God.”…(Lk. 1:30-35)

PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ,
You gave us the Eucharist
as a memorial of Your suffering and death,
may our worship of the Sacrament of Your Body and Blood,
help us to experience the salvation You won for us
and the peace of the kingdom
where You live with the Father

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw how good the light was. God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”   Thus evening came, and the morning followed – the first day.
Then God said: “Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters, to separate one body of water from another.”   And so it happened: God made the dome, and it separated the water above the dome from the water below it.   God called the dome “the sky.” Evening came, and morning followed – the second day.
Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin, so that the dry land may appear.” And so it happened: the water under the sky was gathered into a basin, and the land appeared…Genesis 1:1-9

MEDITATION
“And so the whole universe was completed.   By the seventh day, God finished what He had been doing and stopped working.   He blessed the seventh day and set it apart as special, because by that day He had completed His creation and stopped working and that is how the universe was created.” ...Genesis 2:1-4

PRAYER
God Eternal Father,
bless me through the love,
with which You have begotten Your only Son
from all eternity and shared with Him,
the fullness of Your Divinity.
Bless me through the love, which has adopted us as children
and made us partakers, of the treasures of Your Divinity.
Bless me through the love, which sent us Your Son
and the Holy Spirit to work the miracles of Your power
and mercy in us.
Grant that I may always revere and honour You
as my great God
and love You with my whole heart
as the best of fathers.
Eternal Father, please grant my petition:
…………………….(mention your petition)
Godhead indivisible, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
our first beginning and our last end,
You have made us after Your own image and likeness.
Grant that all the thoughts of my mind,
all the words of my mouth,
all the affections of my heart
and all my action, be always conformed to Your holy Will.
After having seen You here below in Your manifestations
and by faith, may I come at last,
to see You face to face,
in the perfect possession of You
forever in heaven. Amen.

Moses said: “The Lord, the lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity, continuing His kindness for a thousand generation, and forgiving wickedness and crime and sin; yet not declaring the guilty, guiltless, but punishing children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for their fathers’ wickedness!” (Ex. 34, 6-7)DAY FOUR - HOLY TRINITY NOVENA - 21 MAY 2018

DAY THREE
GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT
“I will send you the Holy Spirit”

SCRIPTURAL READING
But when He comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you to all truth.   He will not speak on His own but He will speak what He hears and will declare to you the things that are coming.   He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is Mine;  for this reason I told you that He will take from you what is Mine and declare it to you...John 16:13-15

MEDITATION
“Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the Gift I told you about, the Gift my Father promised. John baptised with water but in a few days, you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1, 4-5) “Baptise all nations in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Mt. 28, 19) Now this is the abiding presence of the Blessed Trinity.

PRAYER
Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of Thy faithful
and enkindle in them, the fire of Thy love.
Send forth Thy Spirit
and they shall be created,
and Thou shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray:
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
grant that through the same Holy Spirit
we may be ever truly wise
and enjoy His consolation,
Eternal Holy Spirit,in Your mercy, grant my petition:

DAY TWO
GOD THE SON
“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

SCRIPTURAL READING
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.   He was in the beginning with God.   All things came to be through Him and without Him nothing came to be.   What came to be through Him was life and this life was the light of the human race;  the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it…John 1:1-5

MEDITATION
At the Baptism of Jesus and at the Transfiguration, the Father’s words were heard:  “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased, listen to Him”:  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life.”;   “So that all who will honour the Son, in the same way as they honour the Father.   Who does not honour the Son, does not honour the Father, who sent Him.” (Jn. 5,23)

PRAYER
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day, He rose again.
He ascended into Heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
From thence He shall come, to judge the living and the dead.
Bless me through the marvelous goodness
of Your Sacred Heart, which chose death to bring us life.
Bless me through the love with which You plead for us
before the throne of God,
bless me in the Blessed Sacrament
with which You give Yourself to us in Holy Communion.
Grant that all this love and bitter pain,
may not be lost on me.
Eternal Son, in Your mercy, grant my petition:
…………………….(mention your petition)
Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
our first beginning and our last end,
You have made us after Your own image and likeness.
Grant that all the thoughts of my mind,

all the affections of my heart
and all my actions be always conformed to Your holy Will.

may I come at last to see You face to face,
in the perfect possession of You, forever in heaven.
Amen

“None of us lives for himself only, none of us dies for himself only;  if we live, it is for the Lord that we live and if we die, it is for the Lord we die.   Whether we live or die, then, we belong to the Lord.   For Christ died and rose to life in order to be the Lord of the living and the dead.”…(Romans 14:7-9)holy trinity novena day two - 19 may 2018

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts Day Nine – 19 May 2018

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Nine – 19 May 2018

DAY NINE
Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee adore
In Thy sevenfold gifts, descend.
Give them comfort when they die,
Give the life with Thee on high,
Give them joys which never end. Amen

THE FRUITS of the HOLY SPIRIT
The gifts of the Holy Spirit perfect the supernatural virtues, by enabling us to
practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration.   As we grow in the
knowledge and love of God, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, our service becomes
more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue becomes more perfect.   Such acts of
virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the
Holy Spirit.   These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and
become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts, in the service of God, to serve
Whom is to reign.

Prayer
Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Your heavenly fruits, Your charity, joy,
peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness and temperance, that I may
never weary of the service of God but by continued faithful submission, to Your
inspiration, may merit to be united eternally with You, in the love of the Father and
the Son. Amen.

DAY ONE
GOD THE FATHER
“Our Father who art in heaven”

SCRIPTURAL READING
This is how you are to pray:  Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”...Matthew 6:9-15

MEDITATION
In the New Testament, Jesus spoke about the Father and to the Father 170 times.   From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus would say:  “I was sent by the Father,” “Your God and my God,” “the Father and I are one.” “I do only the things told by my Father,” “Father, not my will but Yours be done,” etc.

PRAYER

God Eternal Father, bless me, through the love,
with which, You have begotten Your only Son, from all eternity
and shared with Him, the fullness of Your Divinity.
Bless me, through the love, which has adopted us as children
and made us partakers of the treasures of Your Divinity.

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Eight – 18 May 2018

DAY EIGHT
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray!

THE GIFT OF WISDOM
Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is
the most perfect of the gifts.   Of Wisdom it is written “all good things come to me
with her, and innumerable riches through her hands.”   It is the gift of Wisdom that
strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity and promotes the practice of
virtue in the highest degree.   Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things
divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savour, whilst the Cross
of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour:  “Take up
thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Wisdom and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things,
their exceeding greatness, power and beauty.   Teach me to love them above and beyond
all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth.   Help me to attain them and possess
them for ever. Amen.

DAY SEVEN
Heal our wounds our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away!

THE GIFT OF COUNSEL
The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge
promptly and rightly what must be done, especially in difficult circumstances.
Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and Understanding, to the
innumerable concrete cases that confront us, in the course of our daily dutym as
parents, teachers, public servants and Christian citizens.   Counsel is supernatural
common sense, a priceless treasure in the quest of salvation.   “Above all things, pray
to the Most High, that He may direct thy way in truth.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may always do Your
holy will.  Incline my heart to that which is good;  turn it away from all that is
evil and direct me, by the straight path of Your commandments, to that goal of eternal
life for which I long.   Amen

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Six – 16 May 2018

DAY SIX
If Thou take Thy grace away,
Nothing pure in man will stay;
All his good is turned to ill.

THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING
Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Ghost, helps us to grasp the meaning of the
truths of our holy religion.   By faith we know them but by Understanding, we learn to
appreciate and relish them.   It enables us to penetrate, the inner meaning of revealed
truths and through them, to be quickened to newness of life.   Our faith ceases to be
sterile and inactive but inspires a mode of life, that bears eloquent testimony, to
the faith that is in us, we begin to “walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and
increasing in the knowledge of God.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Understanding and enlighten our minds, that we may know and
believe all the mysteries of salvation and may merit at last, to see the eternal
light of Thy Light and in the light of glory, to have a clear vision of Thee and the
Father and the Son.  Amen.

Day Five – 15 May 2018

DAY FIVE
Light immortal! Light Divine!
Visit Thou these hearts of Thine,
And our inmost being fill!

THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE
The gift of Knowledge enables the soul to evaluate created things at their true worth
in their relation to God.   Knowledge unmasks the pretence of creatures, reveals their
emptiness and points out their only true purpose as instruments in the service of
God.   It shows us the loving care of God even in adversity and directs us to glorify
Him in every circumstance of life.   Guided by its light, we put first things firs,
and prize the friendship of God beyond all else.   “Knowledge is a fountain of life to
him that possesseth it.”

Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant that I may perceive the will of the
Father;  show me the nothingness of earthly things, that I may realise their vanity
and use them only for Your glory and my own salvation, looking ever beyond them to
You and Your eternal rewards. Amen.

Announcing a Novena to the Most Holy Trinity Begins – Friday,18 May

Announcing a Novena to the Most Holy Trinity
Begins – Friday,18 May

Perhaps the deepest, the most profound of all mysteries is the mystery of the Trinity.   The Church teaches us, that although there is only one God, yet, somehow, there are three Persons in God. ,,The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God, yet we do not speak of three Gods but only one God. ,,They have the same nature, substance, and being.

We came to know this immense mystery because Christ revealed it to us. ,,Just before ascending He told them:, “Go teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). ,,We know that these Three are not just different ways of looking at one person. ,,For at the Last Supper, Jesus told us:  “I came forth from the Father.”   So He is different from the Father.   But He also promised: “If I go, I will send Him [the Paraclete] to you. . . . He will guide you to all truth” (John 16:28, 7, 13).   So the Holy Spirit is also different.

Even though the Three Persons are One God, yet they are distinct:  for the Father has no origin, He came from no one.   But the Son is begotten, He comes from the Father alone. The Holy Spirit comes or proceeds from both the Father and the Son.   These different relations of origin tell us there are three distinct Persons, who have one and the same divine nature.

Even though everything the Three Persons do outside the Divine nature is done by all Three, yet it is suitable that we attribute some works specially to one or the other Person. So we speak of the Father especially as the power of creation, of the Son as the wisdom of the Father, of the Holy Spirit as goodness and sanctification.

The two doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation are the foundation of Christian life and worship.   By becoming man, God the Son offered us a share in the inner life of the Trinity.   By grace, we are brought into the perfect communion of life and love which is God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.   This sharing in the life of the Trinity is meant to culminate in heaven, where we will see the three Persons face to face, united to them in unspeakable love….Fr William G Most (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church 232-267).announcing a novena to the holy spirit - begins 18 may

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Four – 14 May 2018

DAY FOUR
Thou in toil art comfort sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.

THE GIFT OF FORTITUDE
By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened against natural fear and supported
to the end in the performance of duty.   Fortitude imparts to the will, an impulse and
energy, which move it to undertake without hesitancy, the most arduous tasks, to face
dangers, to trample under foot human respect and to endure without complaint, the
slow martyrdom of even lifelong tribulation.   “He that shall persevere unto the end,
he shall be saved.”

Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude uphold my soul in time of troubles and adversity,
sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give me courage against
all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be overcome and separated from You,
my God and greatest Good.   Amen.

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts

Day Three – 13 May 2018

Thou, of all consolers best,
Visiting the troubled breast,
Dost refreshing peace bestow.

THE GIFT OF PIETY
The gift of Piety begets in our hearts a filial affection for God as our most loving
Father.   It inspires us to love and respect for His sake, persons and things
consecrated to Him, as well as those who are vested with His authority, His Blessed
Mother and the Saints, the Church and its visible Head, our parents and superiors,
our country and its rulers.   He who is filled with the gift of Piety, finds the
practice of his religion, not a burdensome duty but a delightful service.   Where
there is love, there is no tabor.

Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart.   Enkindle therein, such a love for
God, that I may find satisfaction only in His service and for His sake lovingly
submit, to all legitimate authority.   Amen.

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day Two – 12 May 2018

Come, Thou Father of the poor!
Come, with treasures which endure!
Come, Thou Light of all that live!

THE GIFT OF FEAR
The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for God and makes us dread
nothing so much as to offend Him by sin.   It is a fear that arises, not from the
thought of hell but from sentiments of reverence and filial submission to our
heavenly Father.   It is the fear that is the beginning of wisdom, detaching us from
the worldly pleasures that could in any way separate us from God. “They that fear the
Lord will prepare their hearts and in His sight will sanctify their souls.”

Prayer
Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set You,
my Lord and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend
You and make me worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in
heaven, where You live and reign in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God,
world without end.   Amen.

Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit for the Seven Gifts
Day One – 11 May 2018

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
To be recited daily during the Novena

On my knees, I before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God.   I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice and the might of Your love.   You are the Strength and Light of my soul.   In You I live and move and am.   I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, listen to Your voice and follow Your gracious inspirations.   I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion, to watch over me in my weakness.   Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus, looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You.   Give me grace O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, “Speak Lord for Your servant hears.” Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
To be recited daily during the Novena

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding, to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit on Counsel, that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude, that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge, that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety, that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable and the Spirit of Fear, that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him.   Mark me, dear Lord with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

FIRST DAY (Friday after Ascension or Friday of 6th Week of Easter)
Holy Spirit!   Lord of Light!   From Your clear celestial height, Your pure beaming radiance give!

The Holy Spirit

Only one thing is important — eternal salvation.   Only one thing, therefore, is to be feared–sin.   Sin is the result of ignorance, weakness and indifference.    The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Light, of Strength and of Love.   With His sevenfold gifts, He enlightens the mind, strengthens the will and inflames the heart, with love of God.   To ensure our salvation we ought to invoke the Divine Spirit daily, for “The Spirit helps our infirmity. We know not what we should pray for as we ought.   But the Spirit Himself asks for us.”

Prayer

Almighty and eternal God, Who has vouchsafed to regenerate us by water and the Holy Spirit and has given us forgiveness of all sins, vouchsafe to send forth from heaven upon us, your sevenfold Spirit, the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and fortitude, the Spirit of Knowledge and Piety and fill us with the Spirit of Holy Fear. Amen.
