Novena to St Joseph – Day Four

Novena to St Joseph – Day Four
Day Four
FAITHFUL SERVANT

Saint Joseph, you lived for one purpose — to be the personal servant of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Your noble birth and ancestry, the graces and gifts, so generously poured out on you by God — all this was yours to serve our Lord better. Every thought, word, and action of yours was a homage to the love and glory of the Incarnate Word. You fulfilled most faithfully the role of a good and faithful servant who cared for the House of God.

How perfect was your obedience! Your position in the Holy Family obliged you to command, but besides being the foster-father of Jesus, you were also His disciple. For almost thirty years, you watched the God-Man display a simple and prompt obedience, and you grew to love and practice it very perfectly yourself. Without exception you submitted to God, to the civil rulers, and to the voice of your conscience.

When God sent an angel to tell you to care for Mary, you obeyed in spite of the mystery which surrounded her motherhood. When you were told to flee into Egypt under painful conditions, you obeyed without the slightest word of complaint. When God advised you in a dream to return to Nazareth, you obeyed. In every situation your obedience was as simple as your faith, as humble as your heart, as prompt as your love. It neglected nothing; it took in every command.

You had the virtue of perfect devotedness, which marks a good servant. Every moment of your life was consecrated to the service of our Lord: sleep, rest, work, pain. Faithful to your duties, you sacrificed everything unselfishly, even cheerfully. You would have sacrificed even the happiness of being with Mary. The rest and quiet of Nazareth was sacrificed at the call of duty. Your entire life was one generous giving, even to the point of being ready to die in proof of your love for Jesus and Mary. With true unselfish devotedness you worked without praise or reward.

But God wanted you to be in a certain sense a cooperator in the Redemption of the world. He confided to you the care of nourishing and defending the Divine Child. He wanted you to be poor and to suffer because He destined you to be the foster-father of His Son, who came into the world to save men by His sufferings and death, and you were to share in His suffering. In all of these important tasks, the Heavenly Father always found you a faithful servant!

Saint Joseph, I thank God for your privilege of being God’s faithful servant. As a token of your own gratitude to God, obtain for me the grace to be a faithful servant of God as you were. Help me to share, as you did, the perfect obedience of Jesus, who came not to do His Will, but the Will of His Father; to trust in the Providence of God, knowing that if I do His Will, He will provide for all my needs of soul and body; to be calm in my trials and to leave it to our Lord to free me from them when it pleases Him to do so. And help me to imitate your generosity, for there can be no greater reward here on earth than the joy and honor of being a faithful servant of God.NOVENA TO ST JOSEPH - DAY FOUR - 13 MARCH - FAITHFUL SERVANT

*NOVENA PRAYER
*(prayer to be said at the end of each day’s devotion)

Saint Joseph, I, your unworthy child, greet you.
You are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you.
You know that I have special confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary,
I place all my hope of salvation in you, for you are especially powerful with God
and will never abandon your faithful servants.
Therefore I humbly invoke you and commend myself,
with all who are dear to me and all that belong to me, to your intercession.
I beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon me during life
and to assist me at the hour of my death.

obtain for me a pure, humble, charitable mind
and perfect resignation to the divine Will.
Be my guide, my father and my model through life
that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ,
I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession

Novena to St Joseph – Day Three

Day Three
CHOSEN BY THE BLESSED TRINITY

Saint Joseph, you were the man chosen by God the Father.
He selected you to be His representative on earth, hence He granted you all the graces and blessings you needed to be His worthy representative.

You were the man chosen by God the Son.
Desirous of a worthy foster-father, He added His own riches and gifts and above all, His love.
The true measure of your sanctity is to be judged by your imitation of Jesus.
You were entirely consecrated to Jesus, working always near Him, offering Him your virtues, your work, your sufferings, your very life.
Jesus lived in you perfectly so that you were transformed into Him.
In this lies your special glory and the keynote of your sanctity.
Hence, after Mary, you are the holiest of the saints.

You were chosen by the Holy Spirit.
He is the mutual Love of the Father and the Son – the heart of the Holy Trinity.
In His wisdom He draws forth all creatures from nothing, guides them to their end in showing them their destiny and giving them the means to reach it.
Every vocation and every fulfillment of a vocation proceeds from the Holy Spirit.
As a foster-father of Jesus and head of the Holy Family, you had an exalted and most responsible vocation – to open the way for the redemption of the world and to prepare for it by the education and guidance of the youth of the God-Man.
In this work you cooperated as the instrument of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was the guide, you obeyed and carried out the works.
How perfectly you obeyed the guidance of the God of Love!

The words of the Old Testament which Pharaoh spoke concerning Joseph of Egypt can well be applied to you:
“Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God, or a wise man like to him?” (Gen. 41:38).
No less is your share in the divine work of God than was that of Egypt.
You now reign with your foster-Son and see reflected in the mirror of God’s Wisdom the Divine Will and what is of benefit to our souls.

Saint Joseph, I thank God for having made you the man specially chosen by Him.
As a token of your own gratitude to God, obtain for me the grace to imitate your virtues so that I too may be pleasing to the Heart of God.
Help me to give myself entirely to His service and to the accomplishment of His Holy Will, that one day I may reach heaven and be eternally united to God as you are.NOVENA TO ST JOSEPH - DAY THREE - 12 MARCH - CHOSEN

Novena to St Joseph Day Two 11 March

Novena to St Joseph  – Day Two:  11 March

Day Two
VIRGINAL HUSBAND OF MARY

Saint Joseph, I honour you as the true husband of Mary.
Scripture says: “Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary and of her was born Jesus who is called Christ” (Matt. 1:16). Your marriage to Mary was a sacred contract by which you and Mary gave yourselves to each other.
Mary really belonged to you with all she was and had.
You had a right to her love and obedience and no other person so won her esteem, obedience and love.

You were also the protector and witness of Mary’s virginity.
By your marriage you gave to each other your virginity and also the mutual right over it – a right to safeguard the other’s virtue.
This mutual virginity also belonged to the divine plan of the Incarnation, for God sent His angel to assure you that motherhood and virginity in Mary could be united.

This union of marriage not only brought you into daily familiar association with Mary, the loveliest of God’s creatures but also enabled you to share with her a mutual exchange of spiritual goods.
And Mary found her edification in your calm, humble and deep virtue, purity and sanctity.
What a great honour comes to you from this close union with her whom the Son of God calls Mother and whom He declared the Queen of heaven and earth!
Whatever Mary had belonged by right to you also and this included her Son, even though He had been given to her by God in a wonderful way. Jesus belonged to you as His legal father.
Your marriage was the way which God chose to have Jesus introduced into the world, a great divine mystery from which all benefits have come to us.

God the Son confided the guardianship and the support of His Immaculate Mother to your care.
Mary’s life was that of the Mother of the Saviour, who did not come upon earth to enjoy honours and pleasures but to redeem the world by hard work, suffering and the cross.
You were the faithful companion, support and comforter of the Mother of Sorrows.
How loyal you were to her in poverty, journeying, work and pain.
Your love for Mary was based upon your esteem for her as Mother of God.
After God and the Divine Child, you loved no one as much as her.
Mary responded to this love.
She submitted to your guidance with naturalness and easy grace and childlike confidence.
The Holy Spirit Himself was the bond of the great love which united your hearts.

Saint Joseph, I thank God for your privilege of being the virginal husband of Mary.
As a token of your own gratitude to God, obtain for me the grace to love Jesus with all my heart, as you did and love Mary with some of the tenderness and loyalty with which you loved her.NOVENA TO ST JOSEPH - DAY TWO - 11 MARCH - VIRGINAL HUSBAND OF MARY

Day One
FOSTER-FATHER OF JESUS

Saint Joseph, you were privileged to share, in the mystery of the Incarnation as the foster-father of Jesus.
Mary alone was directly connected with the fulfillment of the mystery, in that she gave her consent to Christ’s conception
and allowed the Holy Spirit to form the sacred humanity of Jesus from her blood.
You had a part in this mystery in an indirect manner, by fulfilling the condition necessary for the Incarnation –
the protection of Mary’s virginity before and during your married life with her.
You made the virginal marriage possible and this was a part of God’s plan, foreseen, willed and decreed from all eternity.

In a more direct manner you shared in the support, upbringing and protection of the Divine Child as His foster-father.
For this purpose the Heavenly Father gave you a genuine heart of a father — a heart full of love and self-sacrifice.
With the toil of your hands you were obliged to offer protection to the Divine Child, to procure for Him food, clothing and a home.
You were truly the saint of the holy childhood of Jesus – the living created providence which watched over the Christ-Child.

When Herod sought the Child to put Him to death, the Heavenly Father sent an angel but only as a messenger, giving orders for the flight; the rest He left entirely in your hands.
It was that fatherly love which was the only refuge that received and protected the Divine Child.
Your fatherly love carried Him through the desert into Egypt until all enemies were removed.
Then in your arms the Child returned to Nazareth to be nourished and provided for during many years by the labour of your hands.
Whatever a human son owes to a human father for all the benefits of his up-bringing and support, Jesus owed to you, because you were to Him a foster-father, teacher and protector.
You served the Divine Child with a singular love. God gave you a heart filled with heavenly, supernatural love – a love far deeper and more powerful than any natural father’s love could be.

You served the Divine Child with great unselfishness, without any regard to self-interest but not without sacrifices.
You did not toil for yourself, but you seemed to be an instrument intended for the benefit of others, to be put aside as soon as it had done its word, for you disappeared from the scene once the childhood of Jesus had passed.

You were the shadow of the Heavenly Father not only as the earthly representative of the authority of the Father but also by means of your fatherhood – which only appeared to be natural – you were to hide for a while the divinity of Jesus.
What a wonderfully sublime and divine vocation was yours – the loving Child which you carried in your arms and loved and served so faithfully, had God in Heaven as Father and was Himself God!

Yours is a very special rank among the saints of the Kingdom of God, because you were so much a part of the very life of the Word of God made Man.
In your house at Nazareth and under your care the redemption of mankind was prepared.
What you accomplished, you did for us.
You are not only a powerful and great saint in the Kingdom of God but a benefactor of the whole of Christendom and mankind.
Your rank in the Kingdom of God, surpassing far in dignity and honour of all the angels, deserves our very special veneration, love and gratitude.

Saint Joseph, I thank God for your privilege of having been chosen by God to be the foster-father of His Divine Son.
As a token of your own gratitude to God for this your greatest privilege, obtain for me the grace of a very devoted love for Jesus Christ, my God and my Saviour.
Help me to serve Him with some of the self-sacrificing love and devotion which you had while on this earth with Him. Grant that through your intercession with Jesus, your foster-Son, I may reach the degree of holiness God has destined for me, and save my soul.

Announcing a Novena to St Joseph Patron of the Universal Church Begins – 10 March

In 1989, St Pope John Paul, in his Apostolic Exhortation Redemptoris Custos (Guardian of the Redemeemer), said:

“…may all grow in devotion to the Patron of the Universal Church and in love for the Saviour whom he served in such an exemplary manner … In this way the whole Christian people not only will turn to St Joseph with greater fervour and invoke his patronage with trust but also will always keep before their eyes his humble, mature way of serving and of “taking part” in the plan of salvation.”

St Joseph plays a prominent part in popular devotion:   in numerous popular traditions; the custom of reserving Wednesdays for devotion to St. Joseph — popular at least since the end of the seventeenth century — has generated several pious exercises including that of the Seven Wednesdays;  in the pious aspirations made by the faithful;  in prayers such as that of Pope Leo XIII, Ad te, Beate Ioseph, which is daily recited by the faithful;  in the Litany of St Joseph, approved by St. Pope Pius X;  and in the recitation of the Chaplet of St Joseph, recollecting the Seven agonies and seven joys of St. Joseph.

That the solemnity of St Joseph falls in Lent, when the Church concentrates her attention on preparation for Baptism and the memorial of the Lord’s Passion, inevitably gives rise to an attempt to harmonise the Liturgy and popular piety.   Hence, the traditional practices of a “month of St. Joseph” should be synchronised with the liturgical Year. Indeed, the liturgical renewal movement attempted to instil among the faithful a realisation of the importance of the meaning of Lent.   Where the necessary adaptations can be made to the various expressions of popular piety, devotion to St Joseph should naturally be encouraged among the faithful who should be constantly reminded of the “singular example […] which, surpassing all states of life, should be recommended to the entire Christian community, whatever their condition or rank.”…Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Nine – 31 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Nine – 31 January

9th Day:   A TRUE WITNESS OF FAITH
On 2 February 1990, after dropping home the man with the bag of mealie-meal, Benedict found his way blocked by tree logs across the road.   When he got out of the car to remove them, a mob of young boys and men came from behind the bushes and began throwing large stones at him.   Bleeding and injured, he left the car and ran across a soccer field hoping for assistance from a nearby Shebeen (a place where alcoholic drink is sold illegally).   Seeing an open door at the rondavel kitchen he ran straight in to hide and save his life.
The mob who quickly chased after him, asked the woman there where Benedict was  hiding, threatening to kill her if she did not tell them.   Pointing to where Benedict was  hiding, she pleaded, “Don’t kill me. He is inside”.   Two of the mob entered and pulled Benedict out.   Hugging one of them, Benedict pleaded, “Please, spare my life!”   The youth responded, “OK. Let me go, we’re not going to kill you.”   Believing him, Benedict went out.
As the mob had now surrounded the rondavel, Benedict could not escape, so seeing
one of them coming with a knobkerrie, he knelt and prayed.   Things then moved very quickly.   The man hit Benedict on the head with his knobkerrie, crushing his skull. Benedict fell to the ground.   Boiling water was then poured over his head, ears, nostrils
besides other atrocities.
The burial Mass was con-celebrated on 10 February 1990.   At it all the priests wore red vestments because they believed that Benedict had died for his faith.   It was his stance against witchcraft which had brought about Benedict’s death.

Word of God:
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.   (Matthew 5, 10-12)

Reflection:   How does the courage of martyrs, like Benedict, help me to live my
faith?   How can I stand up for my faith, both in private and in public life?

Prayer:   My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.
He has helped his servant Israel
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity forever.
(Luke 1, 46-55 – The Magnificat)

THE NOVENA PRAYER

O Blessed Trinity,
I believe that you dwell in me through my baptism.
I love You, I adore You and I worship You.
I give You thanks for Blessed Benedict,
Whom You chose to bear witness unto death for his faith
In Jesus Christ, my Saviour and my Lord.

Almighty Father, You filled the heart of Blessed Benedict,
With great love and zeal in building up Your kingdom.
You gave him the courage and the strength
To stand up for his faith without fear, even the fear of death.

Protect me from evil spirits and the powers of evil.
Make me a true apostle of life in my family and in society.
May Your light, O Lord, shine upon me and through me.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Blessed Benedict,
I ask that I may follow his example
Of always being ready to forgive in a Christian spirit.
You know all about my many problems and worries
And my great fears when I look to the future.
I draw strength and courage from the life of Blessed Benedict.

I ask for this very special favour
………………………….

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Eight – 30 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Eight – 30 January

8th Day:  A TRUE APOSTLE OF LIFE
After his strong stand against witchcraft at the community meeting on Sunday, 28
January 1990, people started grumbling and said, “He is the one who is influencing
people, as he is a leader. Why does he refuse to burn witches? He does not agree with
our way”.
Many saw him as belittling their traditional beliefs and practices, and as a stumbling
block in the community because of his consistent stance against witchcraft.   Because
Benedict, as a true disciple of Jesus Christ, was standing firm in his Catholic faith,
some people said, “We had better kill him!”   They therefore conspired to get rid of him.

Word of God
There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an
offering, anyone who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or
a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.   For whoever does these
things is an abomination to the LORD;  and because of these abominable practices the
LORD your God is driving them out before you.   You shall be blameless before the
LORD your God.   For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, give heed to
soothsayers and to diviners;  but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you
so to do. (Deuteronomy 18, 10-14)

Reflection: Do I respect the lives of others, even the weakest ones, especially
the unborn babies?
Do I live a healthy and responsible life?

Prayer:  The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
When evildoers assail me, uttering slanders against me,
my adversaries and foes, they shall stumble and fall. (Psalm 27:1-3,12-14)

NOVENA PRAYER:

O Blessed Trinity,
I believe that you dwell in me through my baptism.
I love You, I adore You and I worship You.
I give You thanks for Blessed Benedict,
Whom You chose to bear witness unto death for his faith
In Jesus Christ, my Saviour and my Lord.

Almighty Father, You filled the heart of Blessed Benedict,
With great love and zeal in building up Your kingdom.
You gave him the courage and the strength
To stand up for his faith without fear, even the fear of death.

Loving God, keep me free from all deeds of darkness.
Protect me from evil spirits and the powers of evil.
Make me a true apostle of life in my family and in society.
May Your light, O Lord, shine upon me and through me.

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Seven – 29 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Seven – 29 January

7th Day:  A COURAGEOUS WITNESS TO THE TRUTH

On 25 January 1990 during a heavy thunderstorm, several lightning strikes burned a number of thatched rondavels (round huts) in the area.   Traditionally when this happens it is not seen as a natural phenomenon, but as the work of a supposed witch.    The headman gathered his council and the community to discuss the matter, with the aim of finding out who was responsible.   They agreed that a traditional healer be consulted to “sniff out” (identify) the person who was responsible for these burnings. A contribution of R5 per person was agreed on to pay the person.
Benedict arrived late at the meeting after this decision had been taken.   His explanation that lightning was a natural phenomenon was rejected.  He argued strongly against blaming witches for causing lightning strikes.   When the decision was upheld, Benedict refused to pay the contribution, arguing that his Catholic faith prevented him from taking part in anything connected with witchcraft.

Word of God
“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of man also will
acknowledge before the angels of God; but he who denies me before men will be
denied before the angels of God”.  (Luke 12, 8-9)

Reflection:   Am I afraid to stand up for my Christian belief when it is
ridiculed or attacked in the name of ‘traditional culture’?
Do I believe in witchcraft? Have I sometimes practised it?

Prayer:   Incline not my heart to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity;
and let me not eat of their dainties!
Let a good man strike or rebuke me in kindness,
but let the oil of the wicked never anoint my head;
For my prayer is conntinually against their wicked deeds.
(Psalm 141, 4-5b)

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Six – 28 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Six – 28 January

6th Day:  A MAN OF PRAYER AND CHARITY TO THE END

People who knew Benedict well observed that he was a prayerful person in his daily life, in his family, and in the Church. He had a deep personal relationship with Christ and was guided and strengthened by his faith in every aspect of life. He had special love and concern for the sick, the vulnerable and those in prison and liked to visit them.   He gave freely of his resources to help the poor and the needy in his village, as well the learners in Nweli Primary school.
In the afternoon of 2 February 1990, as Benedict was working in his orchard, his sister-in-law urgently requested him to take her very sick child to the doctor at Makwarela (Sibasa). Before he started his car, he said to her, “Let us first pray”. On his way back to Mbahe, he gave a lift home to a man living in a neighbouring village. The man was carrying a bag of mealie-meal and was unable to get public transport because of unrest in the area.

Word of God
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?   And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?” And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me”. (Matthew 25, 35-40)

Reflection:   Do I help and support people in need?
Do I pay attention to the poor and destitute in my community?

Prayer:   In return for my love they accuse me, even as I make prayer for them.
So they reward me evil for good and hatred for my love.
(Psalm 109, 4-5)

NOVENA PRAYER:

I believe that You dwell in me through my baptism.

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Five – 27 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Five – 27 January

5th Day:   A MAN COMMITTED TO THE CHURCH
As a voluntary catechist, Benedict Daswa helped to build up the Church community,
especially by preparing people for baptism.   He was a member of the Parish Pastoral
Council and was always regular at the meetings.   He led the Sunday Service when a
priest or a pastoral worker was not available and was very involved in youth ministry,
encouraging the young people to live good, productive lives and to be proud of their
faith.
Benedict promised his wife that he would start building their house as soon as the new
Church of Nweli was finished.   This task of building the first Catholic Church in the area
was a project so dear to his heart that he not only helped the priest with his own car to
transport the building material for it but worked tirelessly on it and encouraged others
to do likewise.   After its completion, true to his promise, he started building his own
house.

Word of God
So we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another.
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them; if prophecy, in
proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who
exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal;
he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12, 5-8)

Reflection:  What do I do for the Church and in the Church?
Do I contribute to the building/upkeep of the church and its services?

Prayer:  I will not enter my house or get into my bed;
I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob. (Psalm 132,3-5)

NOVENA PRAYER:

O Blessed Trinity,
I believe that you dwell in me through my baptism.
I love You, I adore You and I worship You.
I give you thanks for Blessed Benedict,
Whom you chose to bear witness unto death for his faith

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Four – 26 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Four – 26 January

4th Day: A MAN COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY

Benedict was highly respected in the community.   He was a natural leader and a confidant of the headman who chose him as the secretary of his council.   Always guided by his Christian principles, Benedict was never afraid to speak his mind.   He was greatly respected for his honesty and integrity as also for his truthfulness and humility.   On one occasion, falsely accused of using school funds to build his house, Benedict’s innocence and good stewardship were upheld after the headman had ordered an enquiry.
As Benedict believed strongly in character formation through sporting activities for
young people, he started soccer clubs for the youth.   He wanted them to be busy,
disciplined, and off the streets.   During a drought in the Venda area in the eighties, Benedict used his contacts and persuasive skills to obtain food supplies for the children in his school.

Word of God
You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be
restored?   It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under
foot by men.   You are the light of the world. Acity set on a hill cannot be hid.   Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel but on a stand and it gives light to all in the
house.   Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5, 13-16)

Reflection:   What/how do I contribute to improve my community?
Do I take my public/political responsibilities seriously?

Prayer:  But you do see;  you do observe this misery and sorrow;
You take the matter in hand.   To you the helpless can entrust their cause;
you are the defender of the orphans. (Psalm 10, 14)

NOVENA PRAYER:

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Three – 25 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Three – 25 January

3rd Day: A TRUE FAMILY MAN
In 1980, Benedict married Shadi Eveline Monyai, a Lutheran who was then received
into full communion with the Catholic Church.   They had eight children, the last being
born four months after his death.   Benedict believed that helping his wife with the
children and doing household chores were part of his marriage commitment.   He told
people, “You should assist your wife with her household chores” and taught his
children to help in the home.   He also trained them to work hard, both at school and in
his orchard.
The family prayed together each evening.   This family prayer time, which included the
reading of Scripture as well as family prayer, was a true “domestic Church”.   As family,
they always attended the Sunday liturgical celebrations.   Benedict instituted the
“Daswa Day” around the Feast of Christmas.   The family and all their close relatives
used to spend the day together during which as Christmas gifts, each child received
useful school materials for the coming year.

Word of God
”For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and
the two shall become one flesh”.   This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it
refers to Christ and the Church;  however, let each one of you love his wife as himself,
and let the wife see that she respects her husband. … Fathers, do not provoke your
children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
(Ephesians 5, 31-32; 6, 4)

Reflection: – How do I relate to my spouse, my children?
Do we pray together as a family?   How often?

PrayerBlessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Lo, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.
(Psalm 128, 1. 3-4)

I come to You now, Lord, and through his intercession
I ask for this very special favour
…………………………………….(mention your request/s)
if it is according to Your will.

Help me always to follow the good example of Blessed Benedict.
By daily prayer and regular attendance at Church,
Help me to love You, O Lord, above all things
And to love others as You love me.
Amen.DAY ONE - NOVENA BL BENEDICT - 23 JAN 2018

Novena to St John Bosco – Day Four – 25 January

4th Day – For Young People

O Saint John Bosco,
you became father, teacher and friend
to young people by the great love
and personal sacrifice with which you worked
for their salvation.
Pray for us that, inspired by your example
we also may love this chosen portion of God’s flock
with Christ’s own pastoral charity
and receive every child as we would the Lord Jesus himself.
Through your intercession
may God grant me the following grace
………………….…………….
(mention your request)
so that together with others
I may assist and help young people in today’s society, AMEN.

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Two – 24 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day Two – 24 January

2nd Day: A MAN OF WORK
True to his motto, “Pray and Work”, Benedict believed in honest, hard work as a way of
glorifying God and helping people in the community.

Word of God
It will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted his
possessions to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two; to a third, one – to
each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately the one who received
the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one
who received two made another two. (Matthew 25, 14-15)

Deepening of Faith
Nazareth, O House of the “Carpenter’s son”, it is here that we would like to understand
and celebrate the severe and redemptive law of human labour; here restore
awareness of the nobility of work; here remember that work is not an end in itself but its freedom and its nobility come, as well as its economic value, from values which are its
goal;  how we would like to finally welcome here all workers of the world and show them
their great model, their divine brother, the Prophet of all their just causes, Christ our
Lord. ……………Pope Paul VI, Address in Nazareth, 5 January 1964

Reflection: Am I doing my job/work as well as I can?
Do I feel ashamed when doing manual work?

Prayer People go forth to do their work, to their labour till the evening falls.
How varied are your works, O Lord!   In wisdom you have made them all;
The earth is full of your creatures. (Psalm 104, 23-24)

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Blessed Benedict,
I ask that I may follow his example

And my great fears when I look to the future.

and may likewise,
love and honour the Holy Father
as the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth.
