Thought for the Day – 20 May – The Solemnity of Pentecost, Alleluia!

“If the damned were asked: Why are you in Hell? they would answer: ‘ For having resisted the Holy Spirit.’
And if the saints were asked: Why are you in Heaven? they would answer: ‘For having listened to the Holy Spirit.’
When good thoughts come into our minds, it is the Holy Spirit who is visiting us.
The Holy Spirit is a power.
The Holy Spirit …. sustained the martyrs. Without the Holy Spirit, the martyrs would have fallen like the leaves from the trees. When the fires were lighted under them, the Holy Spirit extinguished the heat of the fire by the heat of divine love.
The good God, in sending us the Holy Spirit, has treated us like a great king who should send his minister to guide one of his subjects, saying, “You will accompany this man everywhere and you will bring him back to me safe and sound.”
How beautiful it is, my children, to be accompanied by the Holy Spirit!
He is indeed a good Guide and to think, that there are some, who will not follow Him!
The Holy Spirit is like a man with a carriage and horse, who should want to take us to Pans. We should only have to say “yes,” and to get into it. It is indeed an easy matter to say “yes”!… Well, the Holy Spirit wants to take us to Heaven; we have only to say “yes,” and to let Him take us there.“

Our Morning Offering – 20 May – Pentecost Sunday, Alleluia!

Veni Sancte Spiritus – The Golden Sequence

Before the Alleluia, proclamation of the Gospel, the ancient sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit) is recited or sung on each day of Pentecost week. This hymn appeared first in liturgical books around the year 1200. It has been variously ascribed to Pope Innocent III (1216), to King Robert of France (1031) and even to Saint Gregory the Great (604). Most probably, however, its author was Cardinal Stephen Langton (1128), Archbishop of Canterbury. The poem has been known from medieval times as the “Golden Sequence” because of its richness in thought and expression. Each one of the short stanzas is a sentence in itself, thus facilitating meditation. Below is one of the many translations used today.

Come, Holy Spirit and bring from above
The splendour of Thy light.
Come, father of the poor, come, giver of graces,
Come, light of our hearts.
Best of Consolers, sweet guest of the soul,
And comfort of the weary.
Thou rest in labour, relief in burning toil,
Consoling us in sorrow.
O blessed light, fill the innermost hearts
Of those who trust in Thee.
Without Thy indwelling there is nothing in man,
And nothing free of sin.
Cleanse what is sordid, give water in dryness,
And heal the bleeding wounds.

GOD THE SON
“This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

SCRIPTURAL READING
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through Him and without Him nothing came to be. What came to be through Him was life and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it…John 1:1-5

MEDITATION
At the Baptism of Jesus and at the Transfiguration, the Father’s words were heard: “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased, listen to Him”: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life.”; “So that all who will honour the Son, in the same way as they honour the Father. Who does not honour the Son, does not honour the Father, who sent Him.” (Jn. 5,23)

PRAYER
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day, He rose again.
He ascended into Heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
From thence He shall come, to judge the living and the dead.
Bless me through the marvelous goodness
of Your Sacred Heart, which chose death to bring us life.

Thou, on those who evermore
Thee confess and Thee adore
In Thy sevenfold gifts, descend.
Give them comfort when they die,
Give the life with Thee on high,

THE FRUITS of the HOLY SPIRIT
The gifts of the Holy Spirit perfect the supernatural virtues, by enabling us to
practice them with greater docility to divine inspiration. As we grow in the
knowledge and love of God, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, our service becomes
more sincere and generous, the practice of virtue becomes more perfect. Such acts of
virtue leave the heart filled with joy and consolation and are known as Fruits of the
Holy Spirit. These Fruits in turn render the practice of virtue more attractive and
become a powerful incentive for still greater efforts, in the service of God, to serve
Whom is to reign.

Prayer
Come, O Divine Spirit, fill my heart with Your heavenly fruits, Your charity, joy,
peace, patience, benignity, goodness, faith, mildness and temperance, that I may
never weary of the service of God but by continued faithful submission, to Your
inspiration, may merit to be united eternally with You, in the love of the Father and
the Son. Amen.

DAY EIGHT
Bend the stubborn heart and will;

THE GIFT OF WISDOM
Embodying all the other gifts, as charity embraces all the other virtues, Wisdom is
the most perfect of the gifts. Of Wisdom it is written “all good things come to me
with her, and innumerable riches through her hands.” It is the gift of Wisdom that
strengthens our faith, fortifies hope, perfects charity and promotes the practice of
virtue in the highest degree. Wisdom enlightens the mind to discern and relish things
divine, in the appreciation of which earthly joys lose their savour, whilst the Cross
of Christ yields a divine sweetness according to the words of the Saviour: “Take up
thy cross and follow me, for my yoke is sweet and my burden light.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Wisdom and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things,
their exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond
all the passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess
them for ever. Amen.

THE GIFT OF COUNSEL
The gift of Counsel endows the soul with supernatural prudence, enabling it to judge
promptly and rightly what must be done, especially in difficult circumstances.
Counsel applies the principles furnished by Knowledge and Understanding, to the
innumerable concrete cases that confront us, in the course of our daily dutym as
parents, teachers, public servants and Christian citizens. Counsel is supernatural
common sense, a priceless treasure in the quest of salvation. “Above all things, pray
to the Most High, that He may direct thy way in truth.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide me in all my ways, that I may always do Your
holy will. Incline my heart to that which is good; turn it away from all that is
evil and direct me, by the straight path of Your commandments, to that goal of eternal
life for which I long. Amen

THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING
Understanding, as a gift of the Holy Ghost, helps us to grasp the meaning of the
truths of our holy religion. By faith we know them but by Understanding, we learn to
appreciate and relish them. It enables us to penetrate, the inner meaning of revealed
truths and through them, to be quickened to newness of life. Our faith ceases to be
sterile and inactive but inspires a mode of life, that bears eloquent testimony, to
the faith that is in us, we begin to “walk worthy of God in all things pleasing, and
increasing in the knowledge of God.”

Prayer
Come, O Spirit of Understanding and enlighten our minds, that we may know and
believe all the mysteries of salvation and may merit at last, to see the eternal
light of Thy Light and in the light of glory, to have a clear vision of Thee and the
Father and the Son. Amen.

THE GIFT OF FORTITUDE
By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened against natural fear and supported
to the end in the performance of duty. Fortitude imparts to the will, an impulse and
energy, which move it to undertake without hesitancy, the most arduous tasks, to face
dangers, to trample under foot human respect and to endure without complaint, the
slow martyrdom of even lifelong tribulation. “He that shall persevere unto the end,
he shall be saved.”

Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude uphold my soul in time of troubles and adversity,
sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give me courage against
all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be overcome and separated from You,

THE GIFT OF PIETY
The gift of Piety begets in our hearts a filial affection for God as our most loving
Father. It inspires us to love and respect for His sake, persons and things
consecrated to Him, as well as those who are vested with His authority, His Blessed
Mother and the Saints, the Church and its visible Head, our parents and superiors,
our country and its rulers. He who is filled with the gift of Piety, finds the
practice of his religion, not a burdensome duty but a delightful service. Where
there is love, there is no tabor.

Prayer
Come, O Blessed Spirit of Piety, possess my heart. Enkindle therein, such a love for
God, that I may find satisfaction only in His service and for His sake lovingly
submit, to all legitimate authority. Amen.

THE GIFT OF FEAR
The gift of Fear fills us with a sovereign respect for God and makes us dread
nothing so much as to offend Him by sin. It is a fear that arises, not from the
thought of hell but from sentiments of reverence and filial submission to our
heavenly Father. It is the fear that is the beginning of wisdom, detaching us from
the worldly pleasures that could in any way separate us from God. “They that fear the
Lord will prepare their hearts and in His sight will sanctify their souls.”

Prayer
Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set You,
my Lord and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend
You and make me worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in
heaven, where You live and reign in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God,
world without end. Amen.

God has worked a great wonder:

May your faith in the face of death,

Jesus said to the Eleven, “go out to the whole world and the proclaim the gospel to all creation.”…Mark 16:15

REFLECTION – So that this call should resound throughout the world, Christ sent forth the apostles he had chosen, commissioning them to proclaim the gospel: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Strengthened by this mission, the apostles “went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it.”
Those, who with God’s help, have welcomed Christ’s call and freely responded to it, are urged on, by love of Christ, to proclaim the Good News, everywhere in the world. This treasure, received from the apostles, has been faithfully guarded by their successors. The Seven Last Words of Christ

The Seven Last Words of Christ refer, not to individual words but to the final seven phrases that Our Lord uttered as He hung on the Cross. These phrases were not recorded in a single Gospel but are taken from the combined accounts of the four Gospels. Greatly revered, these last words of Jesus have been the subject of many books, sermons and musical settings. For centuries The Seven Last Words have been built into various forms of devotion for the consideration and consolation of the Christian people.

of the soft, easy, worldly, luxurious days in which we live;
whether the crucifix does not teach you
a lesson of mortification, of self-denial, of crucifixion of the flesh.”

“As is well known, the initial cry of the Psalm 22, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”, is recorded by the Gospels of Matthew and Mark as the cry uttered by Jesus dying on the Cross (cf. Mt 27:46, Mk 15:34). It expresses all the desolation of the Messiah, Son of God, who is facing the drama of death, a reality totally opposed to the Lord of life. Forsaken by almost all His followers, betrayed and denied by the disciples, surrounded by people who insult Him, Jesus is under the crushing weight of a mission that was to pass through humiliation and annihilation. This is why He cried out to the Father and His suffering took up the sorrowful words of the Psalm. The Fourth Word

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Gospel – From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”…Matthew 27:45-46 (Psalm 22(21))

Reflection: To ensure that He suffered every torment that normal man is prone to, Christ allowed Himself to experience despair. Up to this point, Jesus had suffered mainly physically. These torments had left His body racked with pain and agony. But now it was time for the ultimate pain, the pain a soul feels when it is separated from God.

The soul is spiritual being in the image of God. The human soul is like a plant is nourished by the bright sunlight of God. The human soul needs this light to grow and flourish. However, unlike a plant, the human soul does not die when it is separated from God because it cannot die. Instead the soul endures great and debilitating agony. It was this kind of agony that Our Lord willingly accepted on the Cross.

O sinful man, how can you claim that Our Lord does not understand the pain you are going through? He has suffered every imaginable punishment. He has felt the rejection of His own people. He has endured the dreadful physical pains of a brutal scourging and ignominious death on a Cross. He had endured the despair of a soul separated from God. He understands pain, agony, loss and despair. And He wishes to console you . He stands with arms out stretched on the Cross, looking to comfort you in all your distress.

Lord Jesus Christ, You know better than anyone what suffering I am enduring. I beg you to give me the grace and strength to endure these hardships, that I may offer them as penance for my sins. Help me to never refuse my cross, so that by taking it up daily I may be worthy of You one day. Amen.

In many countries of the world, the Chrism Mass is celebrated separately today or tomorrow, together with the renewal of the local Priests’ vows. In my particular Diocese, this is so, therefore I hope you will join me in praying for all our priests.

“Dear brothers and sisters, each year the Chrism Mass exhorts us to return to that “yes” to the call of God which we pronounced on the day of our priestly ordination. “Adsum – here I am!”, we said like Isaiah, when he heard the voice of God, who asked him: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am, send me!”, Isaiah replied (Isaiah 6:8). Then the Lord Himself, through the hands of the bishop, laid His hands upon us and we gave ourselves to His mission. Since then, we have travelled down various roads in following His call. Can we always claim what Paul, after years of a service of the Gospel that was often labourious and marked by sufferings of all kinds, wrote to the Corinthians: “Therefore, since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged” (2 Cor. 4:1)? “We are not discouraged.” Let us pray today that our zeal may always be rekindled, so that it is constantly fed by the living flame of the Gospel.”…Pope Benedict 20 March 2008

LORD JESUS CHRIST,

Eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the
Father on the altar of the Cross and through the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly
people a share in your redeeming sacrifice.

Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial
priesthood may be ever more conformed to you,
the divine Master. May they preach the
Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience.
Let them be shepherds according to your own Heart,

The Second Word

“Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
(Lk 23:43)

Gospel: Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, “Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”...Lk 23:39-43

Reflection: “The Christian is obliged to be alter Christus, ipse Christus: another Christ, Christ himself. Through baptism all of us have been made priests of our lives, ‘to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’ Everything we do can be an expression of our obedience to God’s will and so perpetuate the mission of the God-man.

“Once we realize this, we are immediately reminded of our wretchedness and our personal failings. But they should not dishearten us; we should not become pessimistic and put our ideals aside. Our Lord is calling us, in our present state, to share His life and make an effort to be holy. I know holiness can sound like an empty word. Too many people think it is unattainable, something to do with ascetical theology — but not a real goal for them, a living reality. The first Christians didn’t think that way. They often used the word “saints” to describe each other in a very natural manner: ‘greetings to all the saints’;‘my greetings to every one of the saints in Jesus Christ.’

PATRON OF A HAPPY DEATH

Saint Joseph, how fitting it was that at the hour of your death Jesus should stand at your bedside with Mary, the sweetness and hope of all mankind. You gave your entire life to the service of Jesus and Mary; at death you enjoyed the consolation of dying in their loving arms. You accepted death in the spirit of loving submission to the Will of God and this acceptance crowned your hidden life of virtue. Yours was a merciful judgement, for your foster-Son, for whom you had cared so lovingly, was your Judge and Mary was your advocate. The verdict of the Judge was a word of encouragement to wait for His coming to Limbo, where He would shower you with the choicest fruits of the Redemption and an embrace of grateful affection before you breathed forth your soul into eternity.

You looked into eternity and to your everlasting reward with confidence. If our Saviour blessed the shepherds, the Magi, Simeon, John the Baptist and others because they greeted His presence with devoted hearts for a brief passing hour, how much more did He bless you who have sanctified yourself for so many years in His company and that of His Mother? If Jesus regards every corporal and spiritual work of mercy, performed in behalf of our fellow men out of love for Him, as done to Himself and promises heaven as a reward, what must have been the extent of His gratitude to you who in the truest sense of the word have received Him, given Him shelter, clothed, nourished and consoled Him at the sacrifice of your strength and rest and even your life, with a love which surpassed the love of all fathers.

God really and personally made Himself your debtor. Our Divine Saviour paid that debt of gratitude by granting you many graces in your lifetime, especially the grace of growing in love, which is the best and most perfect of all gifts. Thus at the end of your life your heart became filled with love, the fervour and longing of which your frail body could not resist. Your soul followed the triumphant impulse of your love and winged its flight from earth to bear the prophets and patriarchs in Limbo the glad tidings of the advent of the Redeemer.

Saint Joseph, I thank God for your privilege of being able to die in the arms of Jesus and Mary. As a token of your own gratitude to God, obtain for me the grace of a happy death. Help me to spend each day in preparation for death. May I, too, accept death in the spirit of resignation to God’s Holy Will and die, as you did, in the arms of Jesus, strengthened by Holy Viaticum and in the arms of Mary, with her rosary in my hand and her name on my lips!

I bind unto myself today
the power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need;
the wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
the word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.
Against the demon snares of sin,
the vice that gives temptation force,
the natural lusts that war within,
the hostile men that mar my course;
of few or many, far or nigh,
in every place and in all hours
against their fierce hostility, …….
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
I bind unto myself the name,
the strong name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same,
the Three in One and One in Three,
of whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word.
Praise to the Lord of my salvation:
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
