The Fourth Sunday of Advent – 18 December 2016

The Fourth Sunday of Advent – 18 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Perhaps we can use these days to try to heighten our awareness of whatever is going on in our lives these days and how that can bring us to Christmas. Some examples might help.

So many of us experience the ironic reality that Christmas can be the most lonely time of our lives. Some of these “mixed feelings” or “sad feelings” are difficult to recognize or name.

For some of us, the Christmas we will celebrate this year pales in comparison to wonderful Christmases of our past – perhaps because we were younger or more “innocent” then, perhaps because some of our loved ones who were central to our Christmas are no longer living or not where I am, perhaps because the burdens and struggles of my life or the changes in our world and the war have robbed this Christmas of something that was there before.

For some of us, Christmas will be just another day. Unable to get out to go to church to be with a faith community and without family or friends to be with, Christmas will be a day we are tempted to ignore.

For some of us, Christmas inevitably means family conflicts. Facing the days ahead, whether it be the last few remaining parties, or conflicting demands of family and friends, or the friend or relative who drinks too much, or the experience I’m having that I drink too much and this season is an easy excuse.

For some of us, Christmas challenges us with terrible financial burdens. Children today become victims of the gross commercial exploitation of the day. For those of us struggling to make ends meet on a day to day basis, feeling the cultural pressure of buying for our children things which we can’t afford, can lead us to put more debt on the credit card in ways that simply push us further and further behind.

Some of us, might be really looking forward to Christmas and not be aware of these struggles with Christmas, yet feel that, in spite of our best efforts to make Advent different this year, there is still something missing and we still feel unready for Christmas.

For all of us, the story behind these days can draw us in and invite us to bring our lives to the mystery of how Jesus came into this world and why. Our best preparation for the Holy Night ahead and the Joyful Morning to follow is for us to reflect upon how He came. He came in the midst of scandal and conflict. He came in poverty. He was rejected before He was born. He was born in a feed trough. He was hunted down. And He grew up in obscurity.

He did not shun our world and its poverty and conflict. He embraced it. And hHe desires to embrace us today, in this day. Right where we are. Right where we are feeling most distant. Right were we are feeling least “religious” or “ready.” If we let Him come into our hearts to be our Saviour these challenging days, we will find ourselves entering the sacred night and morning of Christmas “joyful and triumphant” as never before.  And, are you tired of hearing this because you don’t know how to open the door to Him. JUST ASK HIM!  Just pray to Him in your own simple words “Come Lord show me, come Lord teach me, come Lord push the door open Yourself!” – and I find the best way is in Eucharistic Adoration and in prayer after Holy Communion – Come Lord, stay with me!

Come, Lord Jesus. Come and visit your people.
We await your coming. Come, O Lord.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child – Day Three – 18 December

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY THREE

The Life Of Poverty Which Jesus Led From His Birth

O Dear Infant Jesus, how could I be so ungrateful and offend You so often, if I realised how much You have suffered for me? But these tears which You shed, , this poverty which You embrace for love of me, makes me hope for the pardon of all the offenses I have committed against You.

My Jesus, I am sorry for having so often turned my back on You. But now I love Thee above all else. “My God and my all!”
From now on You, O my God, shall be my only treasure and my only good. With Saint Ignatius of Loyola I will say to You, “Give me the grace to love You; that is enough for me.” I long for nothing else; I want nothing else. You alone are enough for me, my Jesus, my life, my love.

O Mary, my Mother, obtain for me the grace that I may always love Jesus and always be loved by Him. Amen.

One Minute Reflection – 17 December

One Minute Reflection – 17 December

A loyal friend is like a safe shelter; find one, and you have found a treasure…..Sir 6:14

REFLECTION – “A friend is more to be longed for than the light; I speak of a genuine one. And wonder not: for it were better for us that the sun should be extinguished, than that we should be deprived of friends; better to live in darkness, than to be without friends.”……………………… St John Chrysostom

PRAYER – God of all consolation, teach me to put all my trust in You. Let me then go out and share the joy of Your love with my neighbour and give You grateful thanks for those You have given me to love and accompany me on our journey to You. St Olympias you were a stalwart and loving friend to St John Chrysostum, Pray for us! Amen

Saturday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 17 December 2016

Saturday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 17 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever.

We now begin the second part of Advent.
We follow the Gospel story, as it bring us to Christmas.
Today, we hear the story of God’s plan,
using a long line of less-than-perfect kings
and 5 very special women, to bring us to Jesus.

God saved us, by becoming one of us,
entering into our human and sometimes messy history.

Jesus will come to each of us this Advent
in and through our human journey.

Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. Ps. 72

Closing Prayer:
Oh, God of wisdom,
I want to praise You and give You my life.

Like a loving parent,
You bless me.
You have watched over me,
knowing my history
and the path that led me to You.

You promise peace in my life.
I ask that I be always aware
of the strength of Your great power.
May it never leave me.

So many people before me
in so many generations,
have served You so humbly,
answering Your call.
Please give me the grace, wisdom and courage
to be Your humble servant.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child – Day Two – 17 December

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY TWO

God’s Love Revealed In His Being Born An Infant.

O Dearest Infant! Tell me, what have You come on earth to do? Tell me, whom do You seek? Yes, I already know. You have come to die for me, in order to save me from hell. You have come to seek me, the lost sheep, so that, instead of fleeing from You, I may rest in Your loving arms.
Ah my Jesus, my treasure, my life, my love and my all! Whom will I love, if not You? Where can I find a brother, a friend, a spouse more loving and lovable than You are?

I love You, my dear God; I love You, my only good. I regret the many years when I have not loved You but rather spurned and offended You. Forgive me, O my beloved Redeemer; for I am sorry that I have treated You thus and I regret it with all my heart. Pardon me, and give me the grace never more to withdraw from You but constantly to love You in all the years that still lie before me in this life. My love, I give myself entirely to You; accept me and do not reject me as I deserve.
O Mary, you are my advocate. By your prayers you obtain whatever you wish from your Son. Pray to Him then to forgive me,and to grant me holy perseverance until death. Amen.

Thought for the Day – 17 December

Thought for the Day – 17 December

Loyalty to friends is an important part of being a Christian and St Olympias suffered for hr loyalty to St John Chrysostum.  Her friendship was a great comfort to him in his suffering, as his letters show and his friendship was a support to her own sufferings.

Friendship is something that should be cherished and nurtured.

Looking at so many saints who accomplished great things and from whom we learn now – in our time – most had great friendships on which to rely and which were their help and comfort, both in their spiritual and temporal lives.

St Olympias and St John Chrysostum Pray for us!

Quote of the Day – 17 December

“For not eating and drinking makes friendship: such friendship even robbers have and murderers. But if we are friends, if we truly care for one another, let us in these respects help one another. This leads us to a profitable friendship: let us hinder those things which lead away to hell.”

Our Morning Offering – 17 December

Our Morning Offering – 17 December

O Lord and lover of men,
make shine in our hearts
the pure light of Your divine knowledge
and open the eyes of our mind to the
understanding of Your gospel teaching.
Instill in us the fear of
Your blessed commandments,
that trampling upon all carnal desires,
we may enter upon a spiritual life,
willing and doing all that is Your good pleasure.
For You are the light of our souls and of our bodies,
Christ O God and we give glory to You together with
Your eternal Father and Your
all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit,
now and for ever, world without end. Amen.

Saint of the Day – 17 December

Saint of the Day – 17 December – St Olympias of Constantinople/the Deaconess – (c361-408)

Throughout church history, holy widows have become friends with priests and bishops, supporting them spiritually and materially, including Olympias and John Chrysostom. A member of Constantinople’s wealthy elite, St. Olympias enjoyed a happy marriage to the prefect, Nebridius. However, when her husband died young, the lovely widow decided to remain single. She refused all suitors, including one advanced by the emperor Theodosius himself.

He punished her by placing her estate under public administration. But she made a striking appeal in 391, and he restored her control over her fortune. Olympias had already decided to live simply, and she began to divest herself, giving everything away to the needy and to the church. Her biographer described her largesse in this way:

Olympias distributed all of her immense wealth and assisted everyone simply and without distinction. She surpassed in generosity to all the Samaritan whose story is told in the gospels. Immediately after the distribution of all her goods, she gave to the archbishop, John Chrysostom, for the cathedral church of the royal city, ten thousand pounds of gold, twenty thousand of silver and all of her real estate situated in all the provinces. Then by the divine will she was ordained deaconess of this holy cathedral of God. And she built a monastery at an angle south of it. John also ordained as deaconesses of the cathedral her three relatives, Elisanthia, Martyria and Palladia. Thus the four deaconesses could stay together in the convent that Olympias had founded.

All were amazed at the holiness of these women: their constant praise and thanksgiving to God, their “charity which is the bond of perfection” (see Colossians 3:14),and their stillness. No man or woman from the outside was permitted to visit them. The holy patriarch John, the only exception, came regularly to sustain the women with his wise teaching.

Olympias, like the women who served Christ, prepared the archbishop’s daily meals and sent them to him. Only a wall separated his residence from the convent. She fed him not only before the plots against him but also after he was banished. Up to the end of his life, she provided for all his expenses as well as for those who were with him in exile.

Olympias also constructed a hospital and orphanage near the convent. She regularly provided hospitality to Christian leaders from all over the East, including Gregory of Nyssa.

When John Chrysostom fell afoul of the empress and was banished, she supported him. He reciprocated by encouraging Olympias when officials persecuted her. Optatus, the prefect of Constantinople, twice banished her for refusing to accept Arsacius and his successor, Atticus, the usurpers who had replaced John as archbishop. Atticus finally disbanded her community and ended her charitable works. Olympias died in exile in 408, a year after the death of John Chrysostom.

The Statue below is on the main Facade of St Peter’s in Rome.

Friday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 16 December 2016

Friday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 16 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
The Lord is coming from heaven in splendour to visit his people,
and bring them peace and eternal life.

We ask to be guided by His love.
He comes to us in more and more ways
as our longing grows.
At the same time, we are being prepared to receive even more grace
that we might be faithful in our daily lives.

Jesus is the Light that shines in the midst of any darkness and witnesses to us that He is being sent to us by His heavenly Father.
May we open our hearts to His coming.

Behold the king will come, the Lord of earth: and he will set us free.

Closing Prayer:
Jesus, You shine a light into the darkness of my life.
I am like a plant in limited sun,
and I find my being turning toward You
longing to be closer,
wanting only to draw near.

Help me to be faithful
in the big decisions of my life
and in the smallest of ways I live out each day.

My goal is salvation, Lord,
and I am painfully aware I can’t do that myself.
Teach me to be patient, to be faithful.

I know there is so much more grace I need
and so much more You want to give me.
Help me to be open to it and to recognize
the many gifts You give me each day.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY ONE
God’s Love Revealed In His Becoming Man.

O Great Son of God, You became man in order to make Yourself loved by men. But where is the love that men give You in return?
You gave Your life blood to save our souls. Why then are we so unappreciative that, instead of repaying You with love, we spurn You with ingratitude? And I, Lord, I myself more than others have ill treated You.
But Your Passion is my hope. For the sake of that love which led You to take upon Yourself human nature and to die for me on the cross, forgive me all the offenses I have committed against You.
I love You, O Word Incarnate; I love You, O infinite goodness. Out of love for You, that I could die of grief for these offenses.
Give me, O Jesus, Your love. Let me no longer live in ungrateful forgetfulness of the love You bear me.
I wish to love You always. Grant that I may always preserve in this holy desire.
O Mary, Mother of God and my Mother, pray for me that Your Son may give me the grace to love Him always, unto death.
Amen.

St Adelaide had to live in the world, with all the turmoil and violence of political life, yet managed to live totally for God in the midst of her many occupations.  She was wife, mother, queen and empress, noble in every way  She is proof that sanctity can be achieved anywhere and that every way of life can me made holy.  So we complain about the strife and evil around us, near to us, so let us be the light of God, let us shine forth His Face, let us strive for the virtue of the holy.

See, O merciful God, what return
I, Your thankless servant, have made
for the innumerable favours
and the wonderful love You have shown me!
What wrongs I have done, what good left undone!
Wash away, I beg You, these faults and stains
with Your precious blood, most kind Redeemer
and make up for my poverty by applying Your merits.
Give me the protection I need to amend my life.
I give and surrender myself wholly to You,
and offer You all I possess,

Saint of the Day – 16 December

Saint of the Day – 16 December – St Adelaide of Burgundy/of Italy/of Seltz  (931-999) – Empress/Contemplative/Worker for Charity and Evangelisation – Patron of abuse victims; brides; empresses; exiles; in-law problems; parenthood; parents of large families; princesses; prisoners; second marriages; step-parents; widows

St Adelaide was possibly the most prominent European woman of the tenth century through her second marriage to Otto the Great of Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor, Adelaide was regent for some time and later became the foundress of many monasteries of monks and nuns.

The daughter of Rudulph II of Upper Burgundy, Adelaide was married at the age of sixteen to Lothair, who was then king of Italy. A daughter, Emma, was born of this marriage. Lothair was probably poisoned by his successor to the throne, Berengar. As part of Berengar’s attempt to keep his grip on power, he ordered Adelaide to marry his son; she refused, and he imprisoned her in a castle. But soon after the German king, Otto the Great, defeated Berengar, and freed Adelaide and proposed marriage, which she accepted.   On Christmas Day 951 she married Otto at Pavia. The marriage consolidated his authority in northern Italy, and in 962 they were crowned emperor and empress by Pope John XII in Rome. Otto died in 973 and for twenty years Adelaide’s life was a turmoil of family and political troubles. Her daughter-in-law, the Byzantine princess Theophano turned her son Otto II against her. Adelaide had to leave the court and live for a time with her brother in Burgundy. A reconciliation was effected, and in 983 just before he died Otto appointed her his viceroy in Italy.

Otto II died the same year and the new emperor, her grandson Otto III, still a minor, was entrusted to the joint regency of his mother and grandmother. Theophano was able once again to oust Adelaide from power and the court. When Theophano died in 991 the regency reverted to Adelaide alone.  The bishop of Mainz, St. Willigis, came to her aid. After Otto came of age in 995, Adelaide was able to devote herself to works of generosity to the poor, to help in evangelising the Slavs and in founding and restoring monasteries and convents. She was especially friendly with the monastery of Cluny, then the centre of a movement for reform and with its abbots St. Majolus and St. Odilo. The latter wrote a memoir of her, calling her ‘a marvel of beauty and goodness’.  When Otto III was old enough, Adelaide retired to the convent of Seltz near Cologne, a house she had built. She never became a nun but she spent the rest of her days there in prayer. Her feast is kept especially in many German dioceses.

Thursday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 15 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

“My love shall never leave you.
“Raise a glad cry …
“Break forth in jubilant song …
“Fear not …”

Our God loves us – with “enduring love.”
Our God is in a relationship with us that is faithful, forgiving, healing.
Let us accept it, surrender to its power and feel the joy
and freedom growing in our hearts.

I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. Ps. 30

Closing Prayer:
God of salvation,
You promise us strength and courage in our lives
if only I ask.
You forgive me and touch me with Your enduring love.

My past life does not matter for

I have begged for Your pity and You have forgiven me

and You love me with such tenderness.

As I ponder the blessings of the days ahead,
and am so grateful for Your forgiveness,
I ask to feel the jubilation and song
break out in my life today.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Wednesday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 14 December

Wednesday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 14 December

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
I am the LORD, there is no other.
Turn to me and be safe.

We have heard the promises and we have begged for more hope.
Today we pray for His saving help and hear His personal invitation
to turn to Him, to find our safety in Him alone.

How might I yet place my trust in God’s love for me?
How might I yet surrender my independence?
How might my heart grow in anticipation and welcome
of the fullness of His coming to me this year?

Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above, like gentle rain let the skies drop it down.
Let the earth open and salvation bud forth; let justice also spring up! ISAIAH 45

Closing Prayer:
Dearest Lord,
Your invitation settles in my soul:
“Turn to me and be safe.”
Something lets go inside when I take those words into my heart.
They are an invitation for me to rest.

So many moments of my life are filled with my own needs.
“Turn to me and be safe,” You say to me again.
Give me the great grace to let go from the depths of my soul.
Help me to be released
from the demons I cling to with so much fear.

I hear Your invitation to ask for help
and I begin to list all the places in my life that need healing.
“Turn to me and be safe.”

You promise Your saving help
and I know it is the only thing that can heal me.
I feel Your presence in my life
and am aware of the growing joy I feel
as I anticipate celebrating the birth of Your son.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Thought for the Day – 14 December

Thought for the Day – 14 December

John, in his life and writings, has a crucial word for us today. We tend to be rich, soft, comfortable. We shrink even from words like self-denial, mortification, purification, asceticism, discipline. We run from the cross. John’s message—like the gospel—is loud and clear: Don’t—if you really want to live!

“O you souls who wish to go on with so much safety and consolation, if you knew how pleasing to God is suffering and how much it helps in acquiring other good things, you would never seek consolation in anything;  but you would rather look upon it as a great happiness to bear the Cross of the Lord.” – Saint John of the Cross

Quotes of the Day – 14 December

Quotes of the Day – 14 December

“In giving us His Son, His only Word,
He spoke everything to us at once
in this sole Word – and He has no more to say…
because what He spoke before to the prophets in parts,
He has now spoken all at once by giving us
the ALL Who is His Son.”

“If a man wishes to be sure of the road
he treads on, he must close his eyes
and walk in the dark.”

“Those who trust in themselves
are worse than the devil!”

“At the end of your life,
you will be judged by your love.”
