Accepting the Will of God
“Why are we so often dissatisfied and so easily unsettled by ordinary events? Why does a small measure of success, pleasure, or human praise go to our heads and disturb our peace of soul? Why does suffering failure, or humiliation, makes us sad and dispirited? It is because we forget that everything comes to us from God.
The inscrutable designs of Divine Providence have ordained that our mortal lives should be interwoven with joyful and sorrowful events. There is joy, so that we may realise, that God is Infinitely Good and may experience on earth, the reflection of His beauty. There is sorrow, so that we may remember, that “here we have no permanent city but we seek for the city that is to come” (Heb 13:14). We should not be too elated by worldly pleasure and success but, should be grateful to God, for giving them to us. On the other hand, we should not lose heart, nor rebel, when we experience suffering or humiliation. These also come from God and He has a reason for sending them to us. Even if we do not know the reason, we should retain our confidence, that the Providence of God, arranges everything for our true welfare.

“His Face shone like the sunand His garments became white as snow.” – Matthew 17:2
REFLECTION – “The Lord displays His glory before chosen witnesses and makes illustrious that bodily shape which He shared with others, with such splendour that His Countenance shone like the sun and His garments became as white as snow. In this Transfiguration, the chief object was to remove the scandal of the Cross from the hearts of the disciples and, to prevent their faith being disturbed, at the humiliation of His voluntary Passion, by revealing the excellence of His hidden dignity. But, with no less foresight, the foundation was laid, of the hope of holy Church, that the whole Body of Christ, might realise, with what a change it was to be endowed and that the members, might promise themselves, a share in that honour which had shone forth in their Head.
But to confirm the Apostles and to lead them onto all knowledge, still further, instruction was conveyed by this miracle. For Moses and Elias, that is, the law and the prophets, appeared talking with the Lord, so that, in the presence of these five men, might most truly be fulfilled, what was said – In two or three witnesses every word stands. What more stable, what more steadfast, than the Word, in the proclamation of which, the trumpet of the Old and of the New Testaments, sounds forth and the records of ancient witnesses, agree with the teaching of the Gospel? For the pages of both Covenants corroborate each other and He, Whom, under the veil of Mysteries, the types that went before, had promised, is displayed clearly and manifestly by the splendour of His present glory.
The Apostle Peter, therefore, being stirred by the revelation of these Mysteries, despising things worldly and scorning things earthly, was carried away by a certain excess of mind, to the desire of things eternal and, being filled with rapture at the whole vision, longed to make his abode with Jesus, in the place where he was gladdened by the sight of His glory. And so also he says: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us set up here, three tents, one for Thee and one for Moses and one for Elias. But to this proposal the Lord made no reply, signifying that what he asked was not indeed wicked, but irregular, since the world could not be saved, except by Christ’s Death and by the Lord’s example in this, the faithful were called upon to believe that, although there ought not to be any doubt about the promises of happiness, yet, we should understand that, amid the trials of this life, we must ask for power to endure, rather than for glory.” – St Leo the Great (400-461) Pope, Father and Doctor (Sermon on the Transfiguration – excerpt).
PRAYER – O God, Who in the glorious Transfiguration of Thy Only-begotten Son strengthened the Mysteries of faith, by the testimony of the fathers and, by the Voice coming down in a shining cloud, miraculously betokened the complete adoption of Thy children, mercifully grant that we, be made co-heirs with that King of glory and sharers in that same glory. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Friday after the Fourth Sunday in Lent Ecce Homo
Read St John xix:4-6
[4] Pilate, therefore, went forth again and saith to them: Behold, I bring Him forth unto you, that you may know, I find no cause in Him. [5] (Jesus, therefore, came forth, bearing the Crown of Thorns and the purple garment). And Pilate saith to them: Behold the Man. [6] When the chief priests, therefore and the servants, had seen Him, they cried out, saying: Crucify Him, crucify Him. Pilate saith to them: Take Him you and crucify Him, for I find no cause in Him. [John 19:4-6]
+1. The Scourging and Crowning with Thorns, have brought the Son of God to a condition pitiable to contemplate. We have seen Him and there is no beauty in Him that we should desire Him. Pity, contempt, horror, disgust, disdain, are mingled in the hearts of those who behold Him . He is indeed, a worm and not a man. He, the fairest among ten thousand! He, the sinless Lamb of God! Oh, how frightful must sin be, if it can work such havoc, even in the Sacred Person of the Son of God!
+2. The sin which did this work, moreover, was the sin of others, not His own. It was something external to Him. He indeed, took it upon Himself, He was made sin for our redemption but sin was never His own, as it is ours! If it could so disfigure and degrade the sinless Lamb of God, when laid upon Him from without, what must be the disfigurement and degradation which sin works in us, springing up as it does, out of ourselves, being a part of our sinful nature, producing its natural fruits?
+3. But was the Son of God really degraded by all these consequences of sin? On the contrary, His Sacred Humanity had never been so glorious or so worthy of honour, as it was then. If He was unsightly before men, in the Eyes of His Eternal Father, He was crowned with honour and glory. There is nothing as pleasing to God as voluntary self- abasement and humiliation, nothing which brings so rich a recompense. How foolish then am I, when I seek to avoid humiliation and hate to be made like the Son of God by suffering contempt and reproach from others!

HUMILITY Meditations for a Month
Consciousness of Humility
How are we to know whether we are humble? If we think we are humble, we may be quite sure that we are not really humble at all! There is no more certain sign of pride, than to be unaware of its existence in ourselves. Which Saint ever lived, who did not acknowledge and lament his pride and self-love? A Saint who should believe himself to be thoroughly humble, would be no Saint at all. How far do I recognise in myself an ever-running sore of pride, making me foul and unsightly before God, who hates the proud and gives grace only to the humble?!
If I find that I take disparaging remarks, attacks and contradictions from others, with patience and good humoor, it is a good sign but, not a certain sign that I am humble. Pride, which apes humility, often renders man proof, against that which others think. He wraps himself in his cloak of pride and looks down on their opinion of him. Indifference to the praise and honour of those around us, is not a certain sign, for this too may come from pride and a spirit of contempt!
But if anyone:
+++ recognises himself as full of pride; +++ dislikes the idea of being honoured and praised; +++ desires humiliations and prays for them; or +++ thinks himself to deserve the worst of everything and the lowest place,
he may hope that he has begun to walk the road which, in the end, may through God’s grace, produce in him the virtue of humility. Examine yourself on these points, thank God for any signs of progress and lament over still -remaining defects.

HUMILITY Meditations for a Month
Humiliation!
Humiliation is a very painful thing and our pride shrinks from it. Yet, it is a necessary step to humility. We must be humbled in order that we may be humble. We must learn, not to shun dishonour, if we are to learn not to crave honour from men. When some slight is shown us, when we are ignored or distrusted, or judged unfairly, we have an excellent opportunity of advancing in humility, by accepting, with patience and resignation, the contempt and dishonour and, not attempting to defend ourselves or assert our rights and our claim to be treated with consideration and respect.
When we commit some fault which causes others to think less of us, we should be full of sorrow at the thought of having offended God and given bad example to our neighbour but we must not seek to shun the just contempt we have deserved, or allow ourselves to be miserable at the thought of being despised. On the contrary, we must be content to be esteemed according to our merits and must thank God for teaching us this lesson and giving us a greater insight into ourselves.
It is a sure sign of pride, if we seek to shirk the consequences of our fault, as Saul did when he begged Samuel still to honour him before the ancients of Israel (1 Kings 15:30). Such conduct only brings fresh humiliations. God, who resists the proud, always brings down those who refuse to humble themselves. The devils, who would not willingly bow the knee before Christ made Man, were forced to do so. God, sooner or later, will force all the proud, willingly or unwillingly, to bow before Him.
