One Minute Reflection – 8 June – There is nothing so beautiful as a soul that is pure.

One Minute Reflection – 8 June – Month of the Sacred Heart” – Monday of the Tenth week in Ordinary Time, Year A, Readings: 1 Kings 17:1-6, Psalm 121:1-8, Matthew 5:1-12 and the Memorial of Saint Medard (c 456-545) Bishop

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” … Matthew 5:8

REFLECTION – “There is nothing so beautiful as a soul that is pure.   If we understood this, we would be incapable of losing our purity.   A pure soul is like a beautiful pearl.   So long as it is concealed in a shell at the bottom of the sea, no-one thinks of admiring it.   But if you display it in the sun then this pearl shines and draws people’s eyes. Purity comes from heaven, we have to ask God for it.   If we ask for it we shall get it.   We must take great care not to lose it.   It closes our hearts to pride, sensuality and every other passion.

Children, we cannot understand the power that a pure soul has over the Good God – it gets all it wants.   Before God, a pure soul is like a child before it’s mother, it caresses her and hugs her and it’s mother returns it’s caresses and embraces.

To preserve our purity there are three things – the Presence of God, prayer and the sacraments.” … St John-Marie Baptiste Vianney (1786-1859) Curé d’Ars – Selected thoughts of the Curé d’Arsmatthew 5 8 - blessed are the pure in heart - purity comes from heaven - st john vianney 8 june 2020

PRAYER – Lord God and Father, grant us we pray, a heart like Your divine Son’s – His Sacred Heart is our standard and our goal – grant us a heart made of flesh, pure and beautiful in Your sight.   May we ever seek Your Face and follow the love with which the Sacred Heart of Jesus guides our way.   May the prayers of St Medan today, help us to be Your children, pure in heart.    Through Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, amen.st medard pray for us 8 june 2020 (1)

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God ….Matthew 5:8

REFLECTION – “The surest and quickest way to attain perfection is to strive for purity of heart.   Once the obstacles have been removed, God finds a clear path and does wonders both in and through the soul.”…St Albert the Great (1200-1280) Doctor of the Church

“God refuses only the person who does not admit his own weakness; He sends away only the unhappy proud person. You must “hold him” well and strongly, with a poor spirit, with a poor heart, with a life entirely poor…”St Raphael Kalinowski (1835-1907)

One Minute Reflection – 12 July

One Minute Reflection – 12 July

You have said, “Seek my face”. My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek”.   Hide not your face from me.  Turn not your servant away in anger, you who have been my help.   Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation………Psalm 27:8-9

REFLECTION – “Veronica- ‘Bernice’ in the Greek tradition, embodies the universal yearning of the devout men and women of the Old Testament, the yearning of all believers to see the Face of God.   On Jesus’ Way of the Cross, though, she at first did nothing more than perform an act of womanly kindness: she held out a facecloth to Jesus.   She did not let herself be deterred by the brutality of the soldiers or the fear which gripped the disciples.   She is the image of that good woman, who, amid turmoil and dismay, shows the courage born of goodness and does not allow her heart to be bewildered. “Blessed are the pure in heart”, the Lord had said in his Sermon on the Mount, “for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8).   At first, Veronica saw only a buffeted and pain-filled Face.   Yet her act of love impressed the true image of Jesus on her heart: on His human Face, bloodied and bruised, she saw the Face of God and His goodness, which accompanies us even in our deepest sorrows.  Only with the heart can we see Jesus. Only love purifies us and gives us the ability to see.   Only love enables us to recognize the God who is love itself.”…………..Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (24 March 2005)

PRAYER – Lord God, grant us restless hearts, hearts which seek Your Face. Keep us from the blindness of heart which sees only the surface of things.   Give us the simplicity and purity which allow us to recognise Your presence in the world.   When we are not able to accomplish great things, grant us the courage which is born of humility and goodness. Impress Your Face on our hearts.   May we encounter You along the way and show Your image to the world. St Veronica, Pray for us! Amen.
