Daily Prayer for the Care of Creation

This World Day of Prayer also falls at the beginning of Creation Time, which runs until 4 October, the feast of St Francis of Assisi.   This is an ecumenical season dedicated to prayer for the protection of creation and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles.

Shortly after Creation Time this year, a Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will take place, focusing on the Amazon region and integral ecology.   This will be an opportunity for the Church to listen to the people of the Amazon and respond with them to the devastation facing them and their environment.1-sept-join-pope-francis-daily-prayer-for-the-care-of-creation-1-sept-2019 (1).jpg

REFLECTION – “But why is this door narrow, one might ask?   Why does He say it is narrow?   It is a narrow door not because it is oppressive but because it demands that we restrain and limit our pride and our fear, in order to open ourselves to Him with humble and trusting hearts, acknowledging that we are sinners and in need of His forgiveness. REFLECTION – “You think that the fight for power in the Church is something of these days, eh? It started there, right beside Jesus”.   Yet in the Church it should not be so, (Mt 20:25-26), Jesus explains the true meaning of power.   “But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them and the great ones make their authority over them felt.   But it shall not be so among you.   Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.”

When someone is given a higher position – in the world’s eyes – we say, ‘ah, that person has been promoted to…. Yes, that’s a lovely phrase and we in the Church should use it, yes – this person was promoted to the cross, that person was promoted to humiliation. REFLECTION – “Jesus is the Son-made-Servant, sent into the world to save us all through the Cross, fulfilling the plan of salvation.   His full adherence to God’s will renders His humanity transparent to the glory of God, who is love.   He is the fulfilment of revelation, that is why, beside Him appear transfigured, Moses and Elijah appear, they represent the Law and the Prophets, so as to signify that everything finishes and begins in Jesus.   Their instructions for the disciples and for us, is this: “Listen to Him!”.
Listen to Jesus.   He is the Saviour – follow Him.
To listen to Christ, in fact, entails taking up the logic of his Pascal Mystery, setting out on the journey with Him to make of oneself a gift of love to others, in docile obedience to the will of God, with an attitude of detachment from worldly things and of interior freedom. One must, in other words, be willing to “lose one’s very life” (cf. One Minute Reflection – 5 August – Monday of the Eighteenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21 and the Memorial of the Dedication of Mary Major

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed,, and broke and gave the loaves” … Matthew 14:19

REFLECTION – “Jesus loves us so much and wants to be close to us and looks after those who follow Him.   The Lord meets the needs of mankind but wants to render each one of us, a concrete participant in His compassion.
Now let us pause on this, Jesus’ gesture of blessing: “taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed and broke and gave the loaves” (v. 19).   As you see, they are the same signs that Jesus performed at the Last Supper and they are also the same gestures, that each priest performs when he celebrates the Holy Eucharist.   The Christian community is born and reborn continually from this Eucharistic communion. Living communion with Christ is, therefore, anything but being passive and detached from daily life, on the contrary, it includes us more and more in the relationship with the men and women of our time, in order to offer them the concrete sign of mercy and of the attention of Christ.

One Minute Reflection – 30 July – Tuesday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 13:36–43 and the Memorial of St Peter Chrysologus (c 400-450) Father & Doctor of the Church

“Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.   He who has ears, let him hear.” … Matthew 13:43

REFLECTION – Christians of the first centuries said, “The world was created for the sake of the Church” (Hermas).   God created the world for the sake of communion with His divine life, a communion brought about by the “convocation” of men in Christ and this “convocation” (ecclesia) is the Church.   The Church is the goal of all things and God permitted such painful upheavals as the angels’ fall and man’s sin only as occasions and means for displaying all the power of His arm and the whole measure of the love He wanted to give the world:   “Just as God’s will is creation and is called “the world,” so His intention is the salvation of men and it is called “the Church” (St Clement of Alexandria).

The gathering together of the People of God, began, at the moment when sin destroyed the communion of men with God and that of men among themselves. the gathering together of the Church is, as it were, God’s reaction to the chaos provoked by sin.   This re-unification is achieved secretly in the heart of all peoples:  “In every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable” to God (Acts 10,35).   The remote preparation for this gathering together of the People of God begins when He calls Abraham and promises that He will become the father of a great people (Gn 12,2).   Its immediate preparation begins with Israel’s election as the People of God (Ex 19,5).   By this election, Israel is to be the sign of the future gathering of all nations (Is 2,2)….

It was the Son’s task to accomplish the Father’s plan of salvation in the fullness of time. It’s accomplishment was the reason for His being sent… To fulfil the Father’s will, Christ ushered in the Kingdom of heaven on earth, the Church “is the Reign of Christ already present in mystery” (Vatican II, LG 3)…   “The Church . . . will receive its perfection only in the glory of heaven,” (LG 48) at the time of Christ’s glorious return…   Until that day, “the Church… longs for the full coming of the Kingdom… The Church and through her, the world, will not be perfected in glory without great trials.   Only then will “all the just from the time of Adam, ‘from Abel, the just one, to the last of the elect,’ be gathered together in the universal Church in the Father’s presence” (LG 2). … CCC #760-769matthew 13 43 then the righteous shall shine like the sun - it was the son's task ccc 760-766 30 july 2019.jpg

“This week, let’s ask the Holy Spirit for the wisdom of time, the wisdom regarding the end, the wisdom of the resurrection, the wisdom of the eternal encounter with Jesus, that we are able to understand that this wisdom is in our faith.   It will be a day of joyful encounter with Jesus.   Let us pray that the Lord prepare us for this.   Let each one of us end this week thinking about the end – “I will come to an end.   I will not remain forever. Thought for of the Day – 27 July – Saturday of the Sixteenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: 13:24-30

“The kingdom of heaven may be compared, to a man who sowed good seed in his field but, while men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.   So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.   And the servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field?   How then has it weeds?’”… Matthew 13:24-27

The field owner’s attitude is that of hope, grounded in the certainty, that evil does not have the first nor the last word.

And it is thanks to this patient hope of God, that the same weed, which is the malicious heart with so many sins, in the end can become good grain.

But be careful – evangelical patience is not indifference to evil, one must not confuse good and evil!

In facing weeds in the world, the Lord’s disciple is called to imitate the patience of God, to nourish hope, with the support of indestructible trust, in the final victory of good, that is, of God.

Pope Francis on Mary’s “Yes”

Mary first conceived Jesus in faith and then in the flesh, when she said “yes” to the message God gave her through the angel.   What does this mean?   It means that God did not want to become man by bypassing our freedom, He wanted to pass through Mary’s free assent, through her “yes.”   He asked her:  “Are you prepared to do this?”   And she replied: “Yes.”

But what took place most singularly in the Virgin Mary also takes place within us, spiritually, when we receive the word of God with a good and sincere heart and put it into practice.   It is as if God takes flesh within us, He comes to dwell in us, for He dwells in all who love Him and keep His word.   It is not easy to understand this but really, it is easy to feel it in our heart….Pope Francis, 12 October 2013

HANDMAID OF THE LORD
The Gospel of Saint Luke presents us with Mary, a girl from Nazareth, a small town in Galilee, in the outskirts of the Roman Empire and on the outskirts of Israel as well.   A village.   Yet the Lord’s gaze rested on her, on this little girl from that distant village, on the one he had chosen to be the Mother of His Son.

In view of this motherhood, Mary was preserved from original sin, from that fracture in communion with God, with others and with creation, which deeply wounds every human being.   But this fracture was healed in advance in the Mother of the One who came to free us from the slavery of sin.   The Immaculata was written in God’s design, she is the fruit of God’s love that saves the world.

And Our Lady never distanced herself from that love, throughout her life her whole being is a “yes” to that love, it is the “yes” to God.   But that didn’t make life easy for her! When the angel calls her “full of grace” (Lk 1:28), she is “greatly troubled” for in her humility she feels she is nothing before God.

The angel consoles her:  “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (v. 30,31).   This announcement troubles her even more because she was not yet married to Joseph but the angel adds: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you…therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God” (v. 35). One Minute Reflection – 27 June – Thursday of the Twelfth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 7:21–29 and the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour

“Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock and the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat upon that house but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”…Matthew 7:24-25

REFLECTION – “The Lord speaks to us of our foundation… our Christian life and He tells us that this foundation is the rock”.   We must, therefore, “build the house”, namely, our life, on the rock that is Christ.   When St Paul speaks of the rock in the desert, He is referring to Christ, the only rock “that can give us security”. …there is always a temptation to live our Christianity away from the rock that is Christ, the only One who gives us the freedom to say “Father” to God.   This temptation has given life to various categories of Christians without Christ.  ..The “light Christian”, who, instead of loving the rock, love beautiful words and turns towards a god of spray, a personal god, with superficiality and flimsiness.   This temptation still exists: superficial Christians who indeed believe in God but not in Jesus Christ.   They are modern Gnostics!

The second category includes those who believe that Christian life must be taken so seriously that they end by confusing solidity and firmness with rigidity.   These rigid Christians, think that to be Christian it is necessary to wear mourning and always to take everything seriously, paying attention to formalities, just as the scribes and Pharisees did.   Tthese are Christians for whom everything is serious.   They are today’s Pelagians who believe in the firmness of faith and are convinced that salvation is the way I do things.   I must do them seriously, without any joy.   They are very numerous.   They are not Christians.   They disguise themselves as Christians.

In short, these two categories of believers do not know Jesus, do not know who the Lord is, do not know what the rock is, they have none of the freedom of Christians. REFLECTION – “In a culture paradoxically suffering from anonymity and at the same time obsessed with the details of other people’s lives, shamelessly given over to morbid curiosity, the Church must look more closely and sympathetically at others whenever necessary.   In our world, ordained ministers and other pastoral workers can make present the fragrance of Christ’s closeness and His personal gaze.   The Church will have to initiate everyone – priests, religious and laity – into this “art of accompaniment” which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other (cf. Ex 3:5).   The pace of this accompaniment must be steady and reassuring, reflecting our closeness and our compassionate gaze which also heals, liberates and encourages growth in the Christian life…

Today more than ever we need men and women who, on the basis of their experieevangeliigaudium169-171,nce of accompanying others, are familiar with processes which call for prudence, understanding, patience and docility to the Spirit, so that they can protect the sheep from wolves who would scatter the flock.   We need to practice the art of listening, which is more than simply hearing.   Listening, in communication, is an openness of heart which makes possible that closeness without which genuine spiritual encounter cannot occur. REFLECTION – “Of course Jesus’ door is a narrow one but not because it is a torture chamber.   No, not for that reason!   Rather, because He asks us to open our hearts to Him, to recognise that we are sinners in need of His salvation, His forgiveness and His love in order to have the humility to accept His mercy and to let ourselves be renewed by Him.

Jesus tells us in the Gospel that being Christians does not mean having a “label!”    I ask you, are you Christians by label or by the truth?   And let each one answer within him- or herself!   Not Christians, never Christians by label!   Christians in truth, Christians in the heart.   The whole of our life must pass through the narrow door which is Christ.”…Pope Francis (Angelus, 25 August 2013)

O Holy Spirit, Divine Consoler!
I adore You as my True God.
I offer You my whole heart,
and I render You heartfelt thanks
for all the benefits You have bestowed upon the world.
You are the author of all supernatural gifts
and enriched the Blessed Virgin Mary,
the Mother of God,
with all favours,
I ask You to visit me by Your grace and Your love,
and grant me the favour
I so earnestly seek…
