One Minute Reflection – 13 March – ‘… The Hand of God … ‘

One Minute Reflection – 13 March – “The Month of St Joseph” – Wednesday of the Fourth Week in Lent – Isaias 1:16-19, John 9:1-38 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

I am the light of the world. When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and spread the clay upon his eyes,” – John 9:5-6

REFLECTION – “To the man who had been blind from birth He gave sight, not by means of a word but by an outward action, doing this, not without a purpose or because it so happened but that He might show forth, the Hand of God which, at the beginning had moulded man. And, therefore, when His disciples asked Him, for what cause the man had been born blind, whether for his own or his parents’ faults, He replied: “Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the Works of God, should be made manifest in him.” Now the Work of God is the fashioning of man. For, as Scripture says, He made [man] by a kind of process: “And the Lord took clay from the earth and formed man.” (Gn 2:7). Wherefore also, the Lord spat on the ground and made clay and smeared it upon the eyes, pointing to the original fashioning, how it was effected and manifesting the Hand of God to those who can understand, by what [Hand] man was formed out of the dust…

And, inasmuch, as man, with respect to that formation which, after Adam, had fallen into transgression, needed the layer of regeneration, [the Lord] said to him [upon whom He had conferred sight], after He had smeared his eyes with the clay: “Go to Siloam and wash,” thus restoring to him, both [his perfect] confirmation and that regeneration which took place, by means of the smearing. And so, when he had washed, he emerged seeing that he might both know Him Who had fashioned him and might learn [to know] Him, Who has conferred life upon him …

But He, the very same Who formed Adam at the beginning, with Whom also the Father spoke, [saying], “Let Us make man after Our Image and Likeness,” revealing Himself in these last times to men, formed visual organs for him, who had been blind, [in that body which he had derived] from Adam.” – St Irenaeus (130-202) Bishop, Martyr, Theologian, Father of the Church (Against Heresies, V, 15, 2-4).

PRAYER – O Lord, we beseech Thee, in Thy mercy, pour forth Thy grace into our hearts, that, as we abstain from material food, so may we restrain our senses from sin. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect)

One Minute Reflection – 9 October – Go. Behold, I send you forth …

One Minute Reflection – 9 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – St John Leonardi (1541-1609) Confessor, Priest, Founder – 2 Corinthians 4:1-6; 4:15-18, Luke 10:1-9 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

Go. Behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves.” – Luke 10:3

REFLECTION – “The Lord of all bestowed on His Apostles the power of proclaiming the Gospel. And, it is through them that we have come to understand the truth, that is to say, the teaching of the Son of God. To them, the Lord said: “Whoever listens to you, listens to Me. Whoever rejects you, rejects Me and rejects the One Who sent Me” (Lk 10:16). For we have not known the message of salvation from any, besides those who brought the Gospel to us.

This is the Gospel they first of all preached. Then, by God’s will, they handed it onto us in their Writings ,so that it might become “the pillar and foundation” of our faith (1Tm 3:15). It is not permissible to say they preached before, they had acquired perfect understanding, as some people rashly claim, who boast of being correctors of the Apostles. For indeed, after our Lord had been raised from the dead and the Apostles had been “clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49) by the coming of the Holy Spirit, they were filled with assurance about everything and possessed perfect knowledge. Then, they went forth “to the ends of the world” (Ps 18:5; Rom 10:18), proclaiming the Good News, of all the good things which have come to us from God and announcing peace on earth to men. Each and all, possessed the Gospel of God in equal measure.” – St Irenaeus (c130-202) Bishop, Martyr, Father of the Church (Against the heresies III, 1).

PRAYER – O God, Who in a wondrous way graciously urged blessed John, Thy Confessor, to propagate Thy faith among the pagans and through him brought together a new religious family in Thy Church for the education of the faithful, grant Thy servants, so to profit by his teaching that we may reach everlasting rewards.Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Quote/s of the Day – 28 January – Our Treasure

Quote/s of the Day – 28 January – St Peter Nolasco OdeM (c 1182–c 1256) Confessor, Founder – 1 Corinthians 4:9-14, Luke 12:32-34 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

Sell what you possess and give alms.
Make for yourselves purses which do not grow old,
a treasure unfailing in Heaven,
where neither thief draws near,
nor moth destroys.

Luke 12:33

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure
buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again
and out of joy, goes and sells all that he has
and buys that field.

Matthew 13:44

It was Christ Who was present to all those to whom,
from the beginning, God communicated
His Speech and Word.
If anyone, therefore, reads the Scriptures with attention,
he will find in them, an expression of Christ
and a foreshadowing of this new calling.
For Christ is the Treasure which was hidden in the field,
that is, in this world (Mt 13:38) –
a Treasure hidden in the Scriptures, …”
Thus it was, that the Lord explained the Scriptures
to His disciples, after His Resurrection from the dead,
proving to them, by their means,
that “it was necessary the Christ
should suffer these things and enter into his glory” (Lk 24:26).
So, if anyone should likewise read the Scriptures
that person will become a perfect disciple,
“like the head of a household
who brings from his storeroom things
both new and old.
” (Mt 13:52).

St Irenaeus of Lyons ((130-202)
Bishop, Martyr, Father of the Church

If you wish to be perfect,
sell what you have and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in Heaven.

Matthew 19:21

In saying this I am speaking the truth
because I am relying on the words of Him ,Who is Truth:
“If you wish to be perfect, sell what you have
and give to the poor and you will have treasure in Heaven”
Mt 19:21).
Do not be cast down by these words,
lest the same thing be said to you,
as to the rich young man:
“It will be difficult for one who is rich
to enter the Kingdom of Heaven”
(Mt 19:23).
Still more, when you read this sentence,
consider that death can snatch
these possessions away from you
that the aggression of someone powerful,
can carry them away.
At the end of the day, you will have seen
no further than insignificant goods,
in place of great wealth – these are no more
than a treasure of coins,
rather than treasures of grace.
By their very nature, they perish,
rather than remaining forever!

St Ambrose (340-397)
Father and Doctor of the Church

“It is not you that shapes God.
It is God that shapes you.
If then you are the work of God
await the Hand of the artist who does
all things in due season.
Offer Him your heart,
soft and tractable
and keep the form in which the artist
has fashioned you.
Let the clay be moist
lest you go hard
and lose the imprint of His Fingers.”

“The preaching of the Church truly continues
without change and is everywhere the same.
It has the testimony of the Prophets
and Apostles and all their disciples.”

“Being obedient she (Mary)
became the cause of salvation for herself
and for the whole human race.
The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied
by Mary’s obedience:
what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief,
Mary loosened by her faith.”

“As long as any one has the means
of doing good to his neighbours
and does not do so,
he shall be reckoned a stranger
