One Minute Reflection – 4 May – The Memorial of St Monica (322-387) Mother of St Augustine – 1 Timothy 5:3-10, Luke 7:11-16
“Soon afterward he journeyed to a city called Naim and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him.” – Luke 7:11
REFLECTION – “Observe how He joins miracle to miracle. In the former instance, the healing of the centurion’s servant, He was present by invitation but here, He draws near without being invited. No-one summoned Him to restore the dead man to life but He comes to do so of His own accord. He seems to me to have purposely made this miracle also follow upon the former.
The dead man was being buried and many friends were conducting him to his tomb. Christ, the Life and Resurrection, meets him there. He is the Destroyer of death and of corruption. He is the One in whom we live and move and are. He is Who has restored the nature of man to that which it originally was and has set free, our death-fraught flesh, from the bonds of death. He had mercy upon the woman and that her tears might cease,, He commanded saying, “Weep not.” Immediately the cause of her weeping was done away.
Christ raised him who was descending to his grave. The manner of his rising is plain to see. “He touched,” it says, “the bier and said, ‘Young man, I say unto thee, arise.’” How was not a word enough for raising him who was lying there? What is so difficult to it or past accomplishment? What is more powerful than the Word of God? Why then did He not work the miracle by only a word but also touched the bier? It was, my beloved, that you might learn, that the Holy Body of Christ is productive for the salvation of man. The Flesh of the Almighty Word is the Body of Life and was clothed with His Might. Consider, that iron, when brought into contact with fire, produces the effects of fire and fulfills its functions. The Flesh of Christ also has the power of giving life and annihilates the influence of death and corruption because, it is the flesh of the Word, Who gives life to all. PRAYER – O God, the consoler of those who mourn and the safety of those who put their trust in You; Who mercifully accepted the holy tears of blessed Monica for the conversion of Augustine, her son; grant us through the intercession of both, to bewail our sins and to obtain the grace of Your forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Saint of the Day – 4 May – St Richard Reynolds OSsS (c 1492-1535) Martyr, Monk of the Bridgettine Order (the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (Ordo Sanctissimi Salvatoris – abbreviated OSsS). St Richard was the first man to refuse the oath of supremacy of the King over the Church and the Pope. Born IN 1492 in Devon, England and died by being hanged, drawn and quartered on 4 May 1535 at Tyburn, London, England. Additional Memorial – 25 October of one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Patronages – of St Richard Reynolds Catholic College in Twickenham. The College is the federation of St Richard Reynolds Catholic High School and the new St Richard Reynolds Catholic Primary School. Beatified on 29 December 1886 by Pope Leo XIII (cultus confirmed) and Canonised on 4 May 1970 by Pope Paul VI (Decree of Martyrdom).
Richard Reynolds was a Bridgettine Monk of the Syon Abbey, founded in Twickenham by Henry V. He was born in Devon in C 1492, educated at Corpus Christi, Cambridge, and joined the Bridgettine Abbey in 1513. Cardinal Pole is quoted as saying that Reynolds was the only English Monk well-versed in the three principal languages of Latin, Greek and Hebrew.
Dom Hamilton is of the opinion that as Reynolds was the most renowned spiritual counselor of the Syon community, he would have likely been consulted by Elizabeth Barton, the Holy Maid of Kent, who had been executed at Tyburn almost a year prior for speaking out against the King’s marriage to Anne Boleyn. Richard had previously arranged a meeting between Elizabeth Barton and St Thomas More. It was his connection to Barton that particularly compromised Richard in the view of the Crown officers.
Richard was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower around the middle of April 1535, along with the Carthusian Priors John Houghton, Robert Lawrence and Augustine Webster (a monk of Sheen Priory in Richmond). All four were tried for the denial of the royal supremacy of Henry VIII.
Against Reynolds, there was the additional charge of attempting to dissuade people from submitting to the King’s authority over the Church. A witness claimed that Richard had stated, that the “Dowager Princess” (Queen Catherine of Aragorn) was the true Queen. Richard denied that he had declared an opinion against the King, except in confession, as compelled thereto. The practice of suborning penitents to accuse their confessors was another evil method of arresting and subjecting Catholics to deny their Faith.
Syon Abbey
All four were executed on 4 May 1535 by drawing and quartering at Tyburn Tree in London, after being dragged through the streets. Also Martyred with them on that day, was Blessed John Haile the Parish Priest of Isleworth . The quarters of the body of St. Richard – the first man to refuse the oath – were chopped to pieces and hung in different parts of London.
The Solemnity of Saint Joseph – 4 May: Between 1870 and 1955, an additional Feast was celebrated in honour of Saint Joseph as Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Patron of the Universal Church, the latter title having been given to him by Pope Pius IX. Originally celebrated on the third Sunday after Easter with an octave, after Divino Afflatu of Saint Pius X (see Reform of the Roman Breviary by Pope Pius X), it was moved to the preceding Wednesday (because Wednesday is the day of the week specifically dedicated to St Joseph, St John the Baptist and local Patrons). The Feast was also retitled The Solemnity of Saint Joseph. This celebration and its accompanying Octave were abolished during the modernisation of rubrics under Pope Pius XII in 1955.

Blessed Ladislas of Gielniów OFM Cap (c 1440-1505) “The Apostle of Lithuania,” Priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, zealous and tireless Evangelist, renowned Preacher, Poet and Hymnist, disciple of St Bernardine of Siena and his Apostolate of the Most Holy Name of Jesus and a devotee of the Passio of Christ. Ladislas served his Order in various capacities which included both a Doorkeeper and as its Provincial! He travelled across Poland to evangelise and was a noted preacher. Martyrs of Cirta: Also known as • Martyrs of Cirtha • Martyrs of Tzirta A group of clergy and laity Martyred together in Cirta, Numidia (in modern Tunisia) in the persecutions of Valerian. They were – Agapius, Antonia, Emilian, Secundinus and Tertula, along with a woman and her twin children whose names have not come down to us.
Martyrs of England: 85 English, Scottish and Welsh Catholics who were Martyred during the persecutions by Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries. Martyrs of Novellara: A Bishop and several his flock who were Martyred together in the persecutions of Diocletian and whose relics were kept and enshrined together. We know nothing else about them but the names – Apollo, Bono, Cassiano, Castoro, Damiano, Dionisio, Leonida, Lucilla, Poliano, Tecla, Teodora and Vespasiano. They were Martyred on 26 March 303. Their relics were enshrined in the parish of Saint Stephen in Novellara, Italy in 1603.
