Quote/s of the Day – 21 November – The Memorial of St Pope Gelasius I (Died 496) Bishop of Rome from 1 March 492 until his death on 19 November 496.
“There are two powers, by which chiefly, this world is ruled – the Sacred authority of the Priesthood and the authority of Kings. And of these, the authority of the Priests is, so much the weightier, as they must render, before the tribunal of God, an account, even for the Kings of men.”
“Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord that we do not trouble ourselves regarding the contradiction of spurious minds but once that very wickedness has been spurned, let us pray that Thou suffer us, neither to be frightened by the unjust criticisms, nor to be attracted to the insidious flatteries but rather, to love that which Thou dost command …”
(In 1751, Pope Benedict XIV published this Prayer within his Apostolic Constitution “Providas” which exposed the evils of freemasonry.)
One Minute Reflection – 21 November – The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Ecclesiasticus Sir 24:14-16; Luke 11:27-28 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/
“Rather blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” – Luke 11:28
REFLECTION – “May Christ help you, dearest brethren, always to welcome, with an eager and thirsting heart, the reading of God’s Word; then your faithful obedience will fill you with spiritual joy. But if you wish Holy Scripture to bring you sweetness and, the divine precepts, to profit you as much as they should, then withdraw from your material pre-occupations for a few hours. Read God’s Words over again in your house, dedicate yourselves entirely to His mercy. Thus, you will succeed in realising, within yourself, what is written of the man who is blessed – “meditating on the Law of the Lord, day and night” (Ps 1:2) and “Happy are they who observe His decrees, who seek Him with all their heart” (Ps 118:2).
Merchants do not seek to make a profit on one single product but, on several. Horticulturists seek a better return by sowing different kinds of seed. You, who look for spiritual gains, do not be satisfied, just with listening to the Sacred texts in Church. Read them at home. When days are short, profit by the long evenings. Thus, you will be able to gather spiritual grain into your heart’s storehouse and lay out, in the treasure house of your soul, the precious pearls of Scripture.” – St Caesarius of Arles (470-543) Bishop (Sermons to the People No 7).
PRAYER – O God, by Whose will the blessed Mary, ever Virgin, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, was on this day presented in the temple, grant, we beseech Thee, that by her intercession, we may be found worthy to be brought into the temple of Thy glory. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).
Saint of the Day – 21 November – St Gelasius I (Died 496) Bishop of Rome. Papal Ascension 1 March 492 until his death on 19 November 496 in Rome, Italy. Gelasius was learned Scholar and a prolific Author, Defender of orthodoxy and of the See of Peter. Zealous Apostle of the poor and needy and of the Majesty of the Liturgical Worship, including the discipline of Hymn and Prayer within his scholastic orbit of Author. The Feast of St Gelasius is kept on 21 November which is the anniversary of his Interment, although many writers give this as the day of his death which actually occurred on 19 November as stated above.
The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Rorme, the birthday of St Gelasius, Pope, distinguished for learning and sanctity.”
There is a difference of opinion and understanding of where our Saint was born – either in Rome but of African parents of Roman citizenship or, in Africa and then returned to Rome as their natural home with his parents. Either way he, himself, states that he was “Roman by nature.” Before his election as Pope on 1 March, 492, Gelasius had been greatly employed by his predecessor, Felix II, especially in drawing up Ecclesiastical documents which has led some scholars to confuse the writings of the two Pontiffs.
Upon his election to the Papacy, Gelasius at once showed his strength of character and his lofty conception of his position, by his firmness in dealing with the adherents of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Despite all the efforts of the otherwise orthodox Patriarch, Euphemius of Constantinople and the threats and wiles, by which the Emperor Anastasius tried to obtain recognition from the Apostolic See, Gelasius, though hard-pressed by difficulties at home, would make no peace which compromised. in the slightest degree. the rights and honour of the Chair of Peter!
The constancy with which he combated the pretensions, lay and Ecclesiastical, of the New Rome; the resolve, with which he refused to allow, the civil or temporal pre-eminence of a City, to determine its Ecclesiastcal rank; the unfailing courage with which he defended the rights of the “second” and the “third” Sees i.e. Alexandria and Antioch – these, are some of the most striking features of his Pontificate. It has been well said that nowhere, at this period, can be found stronger arguments for the Primacy of Peter’s See, than in the works and writings of our St Gelasius. He is never tired of repeating – that Rome owes its Ecclesiastical Princedom, not to an Ecumenical Synod, nor to any temporal importance it may have possessed but solely, to the Divine Institution of Christ Himself, Who conferred the Primacy over the whole Church upon Peter and his successors!
Gelasius’ Pontificate was too short to effect the complete submission and reconciliation of the ambitious Church of Byzantium. Not until Hormisdas (514-523) did the contest end in the return of the East to its old allegiance. Troubles abroad were not the only occasions to draw out the energy and strength of Gelasius. The Lupercalia, a superstitious and somewhat licentious vestige of paganism in Rome, was finally abolished by the Pope after a long contest.
Image created in c870, featuring the Coronation of Charles the Bald, flanked by Gelasius I on the left and Gregory the Great (540-604). Gelasius’ Pontificate and his writing, in particular, gave him an acclaimed status within Pontifical history.
A stanch upholder of the old traditions, Gelasius, nevertheless, knew when to make exceptions or modifications. An excellent example of his brilliance was his Decree obliging the reception of the Holy Eucharist under both kinds. This was done as the only effective way of detecting the Manichæans, who, although present in Rome in large numbers, sought to divert attention from their hidden propaganda and subversive plans, by feigning Catholicism. But as they held wine to be impure and essentially sinful, they would refuse the Chalice and thus, be recognised. Later, with the change of conditions, the old normal method of receiving Holy Communion under the form of bread alone, returned.
In his zeal for the beauty and majesty of Divine worship, Gelasius composed many Hymns, Prefaces and Collects and arranged a standard Mass-book, although the Missal which has commonly adopted his name, the “Sacramentarium Gelasianum” belongs properly, to the next Century. How much of it is the work of our Saint, is still subject to uncertainty.
Gelasius, although Pope but for four and a half years, exerted a deep influence on the development of Church polity, of the Liturgy and Ecclesiastical discipline. A large number of his Decrees have been incorporated into the Canon Law.
In his private life, Gelasius was, above all, conspicuous for his spirit of prayer, penance and study. He took great delight in the company of Monks and was a true father to the poor, dying empty-handed, as a result of his lavish charity. Dionysius Exiguus (c470-c544) the renowned Canonist, in a letter to his friend, the Priest Julian gives a glowing account of Gelasius as he appeared to his contemporaries.
As a Writer, Gelasius takes high rank for his period. His style is vigorous and elegant, though occasionally, obscure. Comparatively little of his literary work has come down to us, although he is said to have been the most prolific writer of all the Pontiffs of the first five Centuries. There are extant – forty-two letters and fragments of forty-nine others, besides six treatises, of which three are concerned with the Acacian schism, one with the heresy of the Pelagians, another with the errors of Nestorius and Eutyches, while the sixth is directed against the Senator Andromachus and the advocates of the Lupercalia. The best edition is that of Thiel.

Extract 9 – On How to Prepare to Celebrate a Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary By St Alphonsus Liguori (1697-1787) Most Zealous Doctor
“ Finally, on the day of the Feast, after Communion, we should offer ourselves for the service of this divine mother, by asking of her the grace of the virtue proposed in the Novena, or some other specia favour., And, it is well every year, to set apart, among others, some Feasts of the Virgin, to which we have the greatest devotion and tenderness and, to make a particular preparation for this, by dedicating ourselves anew and, in a more especial manner, to her service – choosing her for our Lady, Advocate and Mother. Then we should ask pardon for our negligence in her service during the past year, promising her greater fidelity for the year that is to come. In a word, let us pray her to accept us as her servants and obtain for us, a holy death.”

“Whoever is a little one, let him come to me” (Prov. 9:4).
Kindly and lovable art thou in thy splendour, O holy Mother of God! Show me thy face. Let thy words sound in my ears, for thy voice is sweet and thy face is beautiful. Turn to us in thy beauty and loveliness! Come forth in majesty and reign! Hail Mary…
O blessed Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin, Temple of the Lord, Sanctuary of the Holy Ghost, thou alone, without an equal hast pleased Our Lord Jesus Christ! Hail Mary…
Happy indeed art thou, O holy Virgin Mary and most worthy of all praise, for from thee arose the Sun of Justice, Christ our Lord. Draw us, O Immaculate Virgin; we shall come after thee breathing the sweet fragrance of thy virtues. Hail Mary…
The Blessed Virgin speaks: I have asked the Lord for one thing and this shall I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life that I may enjoy the delights of the Lord and visit His temple (Ps. 26:4).

V. Grant that I may praise thee, O holy Virgin. R. Give me strength against thy enemies.

“Although the Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary had not as yet been declared a Dogma of Faith, nevertheless, St Alphonsus maintained it firmly and highly commended those members of his Congregation who, on finishing their theological studies took a vow, if necessary, to give their blood and their life, in defence of this holy Doctrine. He said, “although faith does not oblige us to accept this prerogative of the Blessed Virgin as a truth revealed by God, still, all that is wanting is the formal declaration of the Church. Would that I had the happiness to live to see the definition of this Article of faith.” [Sadly we know that St Alphonsus died 67 years before Pope Pius IX declared the Dogma in 1854 in the Papal Bull “Ineffabilis Deus.”
… The Blessed Mother rewarded her faithful servant even here on earth, for the devotion he showed towards her. It can truly be said that in all doubts, she was his Counsellor and, in all undertakings, his trusted Guide.”

“O men!” he exclaims in the Glories Of Mary “why do you not love Mary who is so loving and deserving of love and so faithful here on earth. She obtains for us, an abundance of consolation and of grace and, in Heaven, eternal glory from her Divine Son. O Mary, Mary, thou art more beautiful than all creatures; thou art, after Jesus, more lovable than anything man can love; thou meritest our esteem more, than all created beings; thou art dearer than all which can rejoice the human heart. Have compassion on my poor heart; yes, poor indeed it is, for it does not love thee as much as it should. But thou canst inflame me with thy holy love. So then, O Virgin Mary, turn thy loving eyes toward me; look upon me, draw me to thee and next to God, make me love nothing but thee, O thou most tender and loving Mother of Jesus and my spiritual Mother!”

Extract 5 – On How to Prepare to Celebrate a Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary By St Alphonsus Liguori (1697-1787) Most Zealous Doctor
“It was our Saint who first introduced the custom of saluting the Blessed Virgin Mary after the visit to the Blessed Sacrament. He never allowed an opportunity of recommending devotion to the Blessed Virgin slip by. If anyone came to visit him or to seek advice, he always found an opportunity to introduce, into the conversation, a word or two in honour of the Mother of God. “She is our Mother,” he would say, “she must bring us to Heaven, she must assist us in the hour of death. How unhappy we should be, did this exalted Queen of Heaven not intercede for us!” This devotion he recommended with particular emphasis to the young. A youth who had been accepted into the Congregation, desired to visit him before entering the Novitiate, in order to receive his blessing. The first words our Saint addressed to him were: “Strive earnestly to acquire a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary.”
Then, after he had blessed the youth, he continued: “My dear son, if you wish to persevere have great reverence for the Mother of God; if you fail to do so, you will lose your vocation. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of perseverance. Call upon her in the morning when you arise and say to her: “Most Holy Virgin, thou art my Mother and my Queen; I recommend myself to thee; assist me that I may not lose my God. Obtain for me, O my Queen, a great and constant love for God, the grace to serve Him faithfully in this Congregation to which He has called me and finally, the happiness to die in the grace of God and as thy faithful servant.”

“Besides the Communion on the day of the Feast, it is well to ask it more frequently of the spiritual Father on the days of the Novena. Father Seoneri said that we cannot honour Mary better, than with Jesus. For she herself, as Father Crasset relates, ‘revealed to a holy soul that nothing dearer could be offered to her, than the Holy Communion, for there, Jesus Christ gathers in the soul, the fruit of His Passion. Hence, it appears that the Virgin desires nothing from her servants, more than the Holy Communion, saying: ‘Come, eat the bread and drink the wine which I have prepared for you.’”

“The honohr most dear to the Virgin, is the imitation of her virtues; wherefore, it is well, in every Novena, to propose to one’s self, some special virtue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly adapted to the mystery, As for example, on the Feast of the Conception, purity of intention; of her Nativity, the renewing of the spirit and the awakening from tepidity; of her Presentation, detachment from something to which we are most attached; of the Annunciation, humility in bearing contempt, &c; of the Visitation, charity towards the neighbour, alms-giving, &c, or at least, the praying for sinners; of the Purification, obedience to superiors and finally, of the Assumption, the practice of detachment, and doing all things as a preparation for death, living as if everyday were to be the last. In this way, the Novena will prove of great service.”

“But better than all others, are the practices in these Novenas, of internal mortifications – as abstaining from the indulgence of curiosity, either through the eye or the ear; remaining retired and silent; obeying, not answering with impatience; bearing contradictions and other things of the sort, which may be used with less danger of vainglory and greater merit and, for these, the permission of a director is not needed. The most useful exercise is to propose, at the beginning, the amending of some fault into which we are most liable to fall. And, to this end, it is well, at each of the visits above-named, to ask pardon for some past sin, renew the intention of avoiding it in future and implore the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in keeping this resolution.”

“The servants of Mary are very attentive and fervent in celebrating the Novenas of her Feasts and, during these, the holy Virgin, full of love, dispenses to them innumerable and special blessings. … The devotions to be used for the Novenas are the following: 1st – Mental prayer, morning and evening, with a visit to the Most Holy Sacrament, with the addition of an “Our Father,” “Hail Mary,” and “Glory be to the Father,” repeated nine times. 2nd – Three visits to some image of Mary, thanking the Lord for the graces granted to her and, asking of the Virgin, everytime, some special favour and, at one of these visits, the prayer which is placed at the end of each of her Feasts, should be read. 3rd – Make many Acts of Love, … to Mary and to Jesus, for we can do nothing more pleasing to her, as she said to St Bridget, than to love her Son – “If you wish to become dear to me, love my Son Jesus”: 4th – Read everyday of the Novena, for a quarter of an hour, some book which treats of her glories. 5th – Make some external mortification … with fasting, or some abstinence at table from fruits or other agreeable food, at least in part; chewing also some bitter herb and on the Vigil of the Feast, fast on bread and water. But all this must be done always with the permission of a spiritual Father. …”

Dear Friends On Thursday evening, 9 November, we lost a close family member, my elder sister, who left us on her final journey home. She had struggled against many odds, not just those related to health and finally gave up the fight and committed her spirit to our loving and merciful God. Our prayers for the dead this month are so appropriate for her soul now too and for these I thank you. I shall be Absent (with your leave) for about 10 days.

“To this must be added that, I cannot be ungrateful to God, for I must rather rejoice that I had such a brother, [sister for me] than grieve that I had lost a brother, for the former is a gift, the latter a debt to be paid. And so, as long as I might, I enjoyed the loan entrusted to me – now, He Who deposited the pledge, has taken it back. There is no difference between, denying that a pledge has been deposited and grieving at its being returned. In each there is untrustworthiness and in each, [eternal] life is risked. It is a fault, if you refuse repayment and impiety, if you refuse a sacrifice. Moreover, the lender of money can be made a fool of but the Author of nature, the Lender of all that we need, cannot be cheated. And so, the larger the amount of the loan, so much the more gratitude is due for the use of the capital.” (From St Ambrose’ Sermon on the Death of his older brother, St Satyrus (c335-c378) Confessor). “Carry me, O Christ, on Thy Cross which is salvation to the wanderer, rest for the wearied and, in which alone, is Life for those who die.”
St Ambrose (340-397) Father and Doctor of the Church
Prayer for the Dead From My Prayer Book, 1927 By Fr Francis Xavier Lasance (1860-1946)
O God, whose property it is, ever to have mercy and to spare, we beseech Thee, on behalf of the soul of Thy servant, whom Thou hast called out of this world, look upon her with pity and let her be conducted by the holy Angels to Paradise, her true country. Grant that she, who believed in Thee and hoped in Thee, may not be left to suffer the pains of the Purgatorial fires but may be admitted to eternal joy. Through Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord, Who with the Holy Ghost- liveth and reigneth, world without end. Amen

Prayer, Work and Leisure
“LEISURE: Some of the Saints make it one of their resolutions to take about an hour’s recreation everyday. They were thinking in terms of rest, however, not inactivity. Rest is the reward of labour and is necessary for frail human nature. Idleness, on the other hand, is a vice and the source of sin. We should take our repose only after our work and, in consequence of it.
Even during recreation, we should continue to live in the presence of God and to think of Him, from time to time. If we enjoy our leisure in the open air, everything speaks to us of God, for we are surrounded by the flowers and the birds. When St Thérèse of the Child Jesus was going for a walk one day, she stopped to admire a tiny flower. Enraptured by its beauty she exclaimed aloud: “How good Thou art, O God.” Our recreation can be the source of increased sanctification!”
Quote/s of the Day – 10 November – St Andrew Avellino CR (1521–1608) Confessor
“It has been curiously remarked by St. Andrew Avellino that those who have a special devotion to the Passion, generally die quiet and sweet deaths, as the Virgin Mary, St John the Evangelist and St Mary Magdalen did. Certainly it is remarkable that, while most of those close to Our Lord died violent deaths, the three who assisted at Calvary should have died so softly, as if already their real death had been died there.”
One Minute Reflection – 10 November – “The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory”– St Andrew Avellino CR (1521–1608) Confessor – Sirach 31:8-11, Luke 12:35-40 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/
“You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” – Luke 12:40
REFLECTION – “These words mean – you are to be awake and vigilant because you do not know the hour when the Lord will come from the wedding … Because, as soon as some feeling of pride, self-satisfaction or self-will enters a man, the Enemy is there, cutting the precious bag, of all his good works from him. Oh, children! How many people like these, will you see, who have done great works … and thus gained great renown … but, presumption has stripped them of all … They will be placed after the poor and simple fellows, whom no-one values because of their outward appearance and work. Because they humbly take a lowly place, these latter, will be set above the others … So keep watch with vigilant soul and you will see the pure Truth with open eyes …
“Let your loins be girt about and your lamps alight.” Here there are three points to notice. First – the loins are to be girded like someone firmly bound with a rope, so as to be led, against his will … Second – you are to carry lighted lamps in your hands which is to say, works of love. Your hands should never stop doing the true, ardent work of charity … Third – you should wait for the Lord when He returns from the wedding … “The Lord will set them over all His goods; He will gird Himself and will serve them.” This wedding from which the Lord comes, takes place in the most interior part of the soul, in its depths, where the noble image is found. O what intimate contact the soul has with God and God with it, in this depth and what a marvellous work God does there! What rejoicing and joy He finds there! It surpasses all feeling and thought and yet, man knows nothing and feels nothing of it.” – Fr Johannes Tauler OP (c1300-1361) Dominican Priest and Friar, renowned Preacher and Theologian (Sermon 77 for the Feast of a Confessor).
PRAYER – O God, by his difficult vow to make daily progress in holiness, Thou placed in the heart of blessed Andrew, Thy Confessor, a wondrous longing to ascend unto Thee, grant us, by his merits and intercession, so to become sharers of that same grace that, ever pursuing the more perfect things, we may be happily brought unto the height of Thy glory. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).
Our Morning Offering – 10 November – “The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory” and Friday of the Passion
By the Precious Blood of Jesus (Prayer for the Holy Souls Especially, the Most Destitute of Spiritual Aid) From the Raccolta
O Lord God Almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which Thy Divine Son Jesus shed in the garden, deliver the Souls in Purgatory and, especially that soul, amongst them all, who is most destitute of spiritual aid and vouchsafe to bring it to Thy glory, there to praise and bless Thee forever. Amen.
Saint of the Day – 10 November – Saint Baudolino (c700–c740) Hermit, Pilgrim. Mystic, Miracle-worker. Born in c700 and died in c740 of natural causes. Patronages -Alessandria, Italy, City of (proclaimed in 1786), Diocese of Alessandria, Italy, (proclaimed in 1786). Also known – Baudilio.
Baudolino lived at the time of the Lombard King Liutprand (712-744) and the oldest testimony which speaks of him is given to us by the historian Paolo Diacono, a Lombard Benedictine Monk (c720-799) practically a contemporary of the Saint.
Baudolino is called “man of wonderful sanctity,” he was a Hermit, gifted with the gift of miracles and prophecies and lived in Foro (now Villa del Foro, a Town on the bank of the Tanaro, near Alessandria). Legend has it that geese, deer and other animals would gather around him to listen to him in his hermitage, therefore, he is sometimes depicted surrounded by these animals.
Paolo Diacono, in his “Historia Langobardorum” reports, among other things, an episode as testimony to the supernatural gifts which Baudolino prossessed. During a hunting trip, an Earl, while trying to shoot a deer with his bow, missed the shot and instead hit Anfuso, the nephew of King Liutprand. The wound was serious and the King sent a messenger to Baudolino to ask the Lord for the healing of his young nephew.
In the meantime, Anfuso died and when the messenger reached Baudolino in his hermitage, before he spoke, the latter told him that he knew everything he wanted and he was sorry because he could not do anything, as the young man was already dead but he would pray for his soul.
The holy hermit died around 740 and was buried in Villa del Foro. When Alessandria was founded in 1168, the inhabitants of Villa del Foro moved there, also bringing the Relics of the Saint, who became their Patron. His patronage continued, according to tradition, when in 1174 he appeared on the City’s defence bastions, putting the Ghibelline besiegers to flight.
In 1189 a Church was built in his honour which was entrusted to the Humiliati and upon their suppression, in 1571, it passed to the Dominicans. Over time, the scant information about him, grew and increased, so that the legend of his life were gradually mixed with other decidedly fantastical information.
Furthermore, it was said that the Bishops of Tortona and Acqui, given the great popularity enjoyed by the Hermit Saint, considered him a Bishop, there was no shortage of those who defined him as bishop of Alessandria, which is why he is also depicted in bishop’s clothes.
In 1803 when the Dominican Church was closed, the Relics of the Saint were taken to the Church of St Alessandro and then, in 1810, transferred to the Cathedral and placed in a Chapel dedicated to our Saint Baudolino. There has been devotion and a vow in his honour since 1189, a vow renewed in 1599 and ratified by the Diocesan Synod of 1602. St Baudolino was proclaimed the main Patron of the City and the Diocese of Alessandria with his Feast being celebrated on 10 November.

INDULGENCES
“Indulgences, therefore, are an aid to repentance for sin, not a substitute for it. In granting them, the Church is only imitating the merciful spirit of Jesus Christ, Who was always compassionate towards sinners.
Let us do our best to make profitable use of the Church’s generosity on our own behalf and, on behalf of the Faithful Departed. Let us observe the necessary conditions in order to gain as many Indulgences as possible.
Every morning, we should make the intention of gaining all the indulgences which we can, during the day.”
Quote/s of the Day – 9 November – Dedication of The Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour
“Like the deer yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for Tbee, my God; my soul is thirsting for God, the living God.”
Psalm 41:2-3
One of the most beautiful attributes of the Basilica is the octagonal (8-sided) Baptistery. There one reads:
“Here is born a people of noble race, destined for Heaven, whom the Spirit brings forth in the waters He has made fruitful. Mother Church conceives her offspring by the Breath of God and bears them virginally in this water. Hope for the Kingdom of Heaven, you who are reborn in this font. Eternal life does not await those who are only born once. This is the Spring of Life which waters the whole world, taking its origin from the Wounds of Christ. Sinner, to be purified, go down into the holy water. It receives the unregenerate and brings him forth a new man. If you wish to be made innocent, be cleansed in this pool, whether you are weighed down by Original Sin or your own. There is no barrier between those who are reborn and made one, by the one font, the one Spirit and the one Faith. Let neither the number nor the kind of their sins, terrify anyone – once reborn in this water, they will be holy.”

“… For this day, I must abide in thy house.” – Luke 19:5
REFLECTION – “Some people are very like Zacchaeus. They desire to see Jesus as He is. All power of reason and all natural light, are too short and small for this, so they run ahead of all crowds and all the multiplicity of creatures. Through faith and love, they climb up to the highest part of their mind, where their spirit lives in its freedom, devoid of images and obstacles. It is there that Jesus is seen, known and loved in His Divinity, for there, He is always present, to the free and exalted spirit which has risen above itself in love of Him. Jesus there flows forth with a fullness of grace and favours.
But He says to all: “Come down quickly, for the exalted freedom of the spirit cannot be maintained, except through lowly obedience of mind. You must know and love Me, as both God and a human being, higher than all and lower than all! You will savour Me when I raise you up above all things and above yourself to Myself and, when you lower yourself beneath all things and beneath yourself, to Me and for My sake. Then, I will have to come to your house and remain living with you and in you and you with Me and in Me!”
When these persons know, taste and feel this, they come down quickly in great disdain of themselves and, with a humble heart and true displeasure, regarding their life and all their works, they say: “Lord, I am not worthy – but I am truly unworthy – that I should receive Thine glorious body in the blessed Sacrament, into the sinful house of my body and soul. But be gracious to me, Lord and have mercy on my poor life and all my transgressions.” – Blessed Jan van Ruysbroeck (1293-1381) Canon Regular (A Mirror of Eternal Blessedness).
PRAYER – O God, Who for us bring each year the recurrence of the Consecration day of this Thy holy temple and always bring us back safely to the Sacred Rites, hear the prayers of Thy people and grant that, whoever enters this temple to pray for blessings., may rejoice in having obtained whatever he sought. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

My God! I Recommend to Thee … Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory By St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696-1787) Most Zealous Doctor
My God! I recommend to Thee, the souls of my relatives, my benefactors, my friend, my enemies and of those, who are in Purgatory on my account. I recommend to Thee, the souls of Evangelical labourers, of Religious and Priests and especially of those, who had charge of my soul. I recommend to Thee, the souls of those, who were most devout to the Passion of Our Lord, to the Blessed Sacrament, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the souls, who are most abandoned, those, who suffer most and those, who are nearest to the entrance into Paradise. Amen.
Saint of the Day – 9 November – Saint Benignus of Armagh (Died 467) Bishop, Disciple of and Successor to St Patrick (c386-461) as the Bishop, Musician, Also known as – “Patrick’s Psalm Singer” Benignus of Ireland, Benen of….
Benignus was the son of Sesenen a pagan Irish chieftain. He was Baptised into the Catholic Faith by St Patrick and became his favourrf disciple and, in around 450, his administrative assistant in the Diocese of Armagh and upon St Patrick’s death in 461, becoming the Bishop there.
He had a gentle and lovable disposition and was named Benen (Latinised as Benignus). He followed St Patrick in all his travels and helped him in all his evangelisation and with missionary work, especially assisting him in the formation of Choirs for Liturgical music. From his musical talents he was known as “Patrick’s Psalm Singer.”
As Benignus had been trained by St Patrick in sacred learning from his youth and was well versed in the language and culture of his native land, he was appointed Secretary to the Commission of Nine which had been directed to compile the Brehon Laws, (Laws governing everyday life) a few years before

Benignus also contributed materials for the “Psalter of Cashel” and the “Book of Rights.” He was present at the Synod which passed the Canon recognising the “See of the Apostle Peter” as the final court of appeal in difficult cases – this Canon is to be found in the Book of Armagh.
He established a Monastery in today’s Drumbannon and also in today’s Kilbonane. During the Eastertide of 433, St Patrick clashed with King Laoghaire at Tara, over Religion and legend has it that a trial by fire was proposed. A pagan and Benignus were tied inside a burning timber building; the pagan was reduced to ash while St Benignus was untouched. At this point, Christian teaching was established throughout the region. St Benignus resigned hisBishopric in 467 and died at the end of that same year.

The Martyrology of Marianus O’Gorman refers to “bright Benignus, a dear scion” on this day but he has a fuller entry in the Martyrology of Donegal which Archbishop John Healy quotes below. This extract on Saint Benignus/Benen has been taken from his 1905 book “The Life and Writings of Saint Patrick.”
“BENIGNUS, i.e., Benen, son of Sescnen, disciple of Patrick and his successor, that is, Primate of Ard-Macha (Armagh). He was of the race of Cian, son of Oilioll Olum. Sodelbh, daughter of Cathaoir, son of Feidhlimidh Firurghlais, of Leinster, was his mother. The holy Benen was benign, was devout – he was a virgin without ever defiling his virginity; for, when he was psalm-singer at Ard-Macha along with his master, St Patrick, Earcnat, daughter of Daire, loved him and she was seized with a disease, so that she died suddenly and Benen brought consecrated water to her from Patrick and he shook it upon her and she arose alive and well and she loved him spiritually afterwards and she subsequently went to Patrick and confessed all her sins to him and she offered her virginity afterwards to God, so that she went to Heaven and the name of God, of Patrick and of Benen, was magnified through it.”

The Advantages of Devotion to the Souls in Purgatory
“The example of the Saints should inspire us to practise great devotion to the Souls in Purgatory. We should ask them to obtain for us everything which we need but especially, the graces necessary for our eternal salvation!”
Quote/s of the Day – 8 November – “The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory” – The Octave Day of All Saints – Apocalypse 7:2-12; Matthew 5:1-12 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/
“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in Heaven.”
Matthew 5:12
“Let us listen to the holy Voice of God which summons us from on high, from the holy mountain top. There, we must hasten – I make bold to say – like Jesus, Who is our leader and has gone before us into Heaven. There, with Him, may the eyes of our mind shine with His light and the features of our soul be made new; may we be transfigured with Him and moulded to His image, ever becoming divine, being transformed in an ever greater degree of glory.”
St Anastasius Sinaita (Died 6th Century) Priest and Abbot of St Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai
“The only true riches are those that make us rich in virtue. Therefore, if you want to be rich, beloved, love true riches. If you aspire to the heights of real honour, strive to reach the Kingdom of Heaven. If you value rank and renown, hasten to be enrolled in the heavenly court of the Angels.”
St Pope Gregory III (Died 741)
“Whatever riches and all other transitory things you may possess, you must keep your heart free from the slightest affection for them. Your heart may be surrounded by riches; however, riches must never master your heart! … Do not let that mind which is the likeness of God, cleave to mere earthly goods; let it always be raised above them, not sunk in them.”
St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor Caritas
“Let us not strive for the rewards of Heaven, valuable though they may be but live, so as to please the God of Heaven. If God were not in Heaven, all its beauty, riches and sweetness, would be dull rather than delightful. By faith, we know, God already dwells within us. But in Heaven, we will see God face-to-face. May we so live that one day, we will be in Heaven praising and praying eternally, before our Lord and Saviour!”

“Be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in Heaven.” – Matthew 5:12
REFLECTION – “Dearly beloved, let us anxiously attend to all that concerns the profession of our common life, “keeping the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace,” by “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the imparting of the Holy Spirit ”(Eph 4,3; 2 Cor 13:13). From the love of God comes the unity of the spirit; from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ comes the bond of peace; from the imparting of the Holy Spirit, comes that communion which is necessary to those who live in common. …
“I believe, 0 Lord, in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints” (Credo). This is my hope, this is my trust, this is my confidence, this is the whole of my security in the professing of my faith. … If I am allowed, O Lord, to “love Thee and love my neighbour,” (Mt 22:37-39) although my merits are small and few, yet will my hopes reach beyond them. I am confident that the merits of the Saints will help me by the communion of charity, so that the Communion of Saints will make up for my insufficiency and imperfection. … Let charity expand our hope, as far as the Communion of Saints, in the sharing of merits and rewards but the sharing of the latter belongs to the future, for it is the sharing in the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Since, then, there are three communions – the first of nature, which includes the sharing of guilt …; the second of grace and the third, of glory. By the communion of grace, that of nature begins to be remade and the sharing of guilt to be excluded but by the communion of glory, that of nature will be perfectly restored and the communion of anger, will be entirely excluded, when “God will wipe away every tear from the eyes” of the Saints (Is 25:8; Rv 21:4). Then, among all the Saints, there will be “one heart and one soul” and “all things will be in common”when God will be “all in all” (Acts 4:2; 1 Cor 15:28). That we may all arrive at this communion and that we all may be one, “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, and the imparting of the Holy Spirit be with us all forever. Amen.” – Baldwin of Forde O.Cist ( c 1125–1190) Cistercian Abbot, Bishop, then Archbishop of Canterbury (Treatise on the common life).
PRAYER – Almighty, eternal God, Who granted us to honour the merits of all Thy Saints in a single solemn festival, bestow on us, we beseech Thee, through their manifold intercession, that abundance of Thymercy for which we yearn. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).
