One Minute Reflection – 11 October – “The Month of The Most Holy Rosary and The Holy Angels” – The Feast of the Divine Maternity –Ecclesiasticus Sirach 24:23-31 – Luke 2:43-51 –
“He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them and His mother kept all these things in her heart.” – Luke 2:51
REFLECTION – “Consider the most prudent woman Mary, Mother of true Wisdom, as the pupil of her Son. For she learned from Him, not as from a child or man but, as from God. Yes, she dwelt in meditation on His words and actions. Nothing of what was said or done by Him, fell idly on her mind. As before, when she conceived the Word itself, in her womb, so now, does she hold within her, His ways and words, cherishing them, as it were, in her heart. That which she now beholds in the present, she waits to have revealed with greater clarity, in the future. This practice she followed as a rule and law through all her life.” – St Bede the Venerable (673-735) Father and Doctor of the Church (Exposition of the Gospel of Luke).
PRAYER – O God, Who, by the message of an Angel, willed to take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant that we, Thy suppliants, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, maybe assisted by her intercession with Thee.Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Saint of the Day – 11 October – Saint Firminus (c480-568) Bishop and Confessor of Uzes, Narbonne, France. Born in Narbonne, France and died
Also known as – Fermin.
The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Uzes, Narbonne, France, St Firminus, Bishop and Confessor.”
Firminus was born to the Senator and aristocrat Tonance Ferréol II and his wife Industria.
Firminus was well-educated by his Uncle, Roricius (Ruricius or Rorice), who was a patrician. His Uncle served as the 3rd Bishop of Uzès from 533 to 538. Firminus thereafter succeeded his Uncle as the Bishop of Uzès.
Firminus signed the Decrees of the 4th and 5th Councils of Orléans in 541 and 549, respectively. In 551, he assisted at the 2nd Council of Paris.
At the time, the Bishop of Uzès fell under the authority of the Archdiocese of Arles, for our Saint a great blessing as he was a spiritual student of the learned and most veneragble Saint Cæsarius of Arles.
Firminus died 15 years after he becamethe Bbishop, in 553 thus taking us to 568 as the date of his death.
Saint Firminus is locally venerated as Saint Firmin and his Relics are located in the Uzès Cathedral.
The Feast of the Divine Maternity – Second Sunday in October or 11 October:
The object of this Feast is to commemorate the dignity of the Mary as Mother of God. Mary is truly the Mother of Christ, who in One Person unites the Human and Divine Nature. This title was solemnly ratified by the Council of Ephesus on 22 June 431. It was first granted to Portugal, Brazil and Algeria in 1751; it is now of almost universal observance. Under this title Poland celebrates the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland.
At present the Feast is not found in the Universal Calendar of the Church but nearly all Diocesan calendars have adopted it.
