“The Apostles were completely transformed after the feast of Pentecost.
They had ben ignorant rustics, timid and vacillating.
They had hardly understood at all, the lofty teachings of Christ, for they were hoping still for an earthly kingdom in which they would occupy the highest posts.

When they received the Holy Ghost, however, their minds were flooded with supernatural light and they became heroic in their resolution.
Ignorant, though they had been, they became masters of Truth, far superior to the sages of Athens or the philosophers of Rome.
They were no longer timid and hesitating but, fearlessly encountered the power of the Sanhedrin, the whips of the soldiery, the dangers of long voyages and, Martyrdom itself.

We too have received the illumination and favours of the Holy Spirit.
Many times, when we have invoked Him, He has inspired and consoled us.
But we may not have responded with the same fervour and self-denial as the Apostles.
Let us remember that, to neglect God’s gifts, is to risk our eternal salvation!”

“He sells all he has and buys that field.” – Matthew 13:44

REFLECTION – “ Our Lord Jesus Christ frequently and insistently, repeated “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me” (Mt 16:24) … and elsewhere – “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor,” after which he adds: “then come, follow me” (Mt 19:21).

For someone who understands it, the parable of the merchant is saying the same thing – “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field which a person finds and hides again and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Undoubtedly, the precious pearls here refer to the Kingdom of Heaven and our Lord shows us that it is impossible to gain it unless we give up all we possess: wealth, esteem, high birth, and those things which others greedily seek after.

Our Lord has also declared that it is impossible to be properly busied about one’s tasks when the mind is distracted by all sorts of things – “No-one can serve two masters,” He said (Mt 6:24). That is why the “treasure in Heaven” is the only one we should choose to fix our heart on – for “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Mt 6:21) … To summarise, it is a matter of our raising our hearts to the life of Heaven in such a way that we would be able to say – “Our citizenship is in Heaven” (Phil 3:20). Above all, it is to begin to be like Christ, Who “although He was rich, made Himself poor for our sake” (2 Cor 8:9).” – St Basil the Great (330-379) Bishop, Father & Doctor of the Church (Greater monastic Rules, 8).

PRAYER – O God, Who taught blessed Hedwig to forsake worldly vanities that she might, humbly follow Thy Cross, with her whole heart, grant through her merits and example, we may learn to renounce the perishable delights of the world and, by embracing Thy Cross, overcome all things opposed to our salvation. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Trèves, St Florentinus, Bishop,”

Upon being Consecrated as the Bishop of Cahors, in France, Florentins received a congratulatory letter from his friend, Saint Paulinus of Nola, who was later to become a Bishop himself.

Paulinus praises Florentinus as a man of great humility and meekness of heart, with the gentleness and the innocence of a lamb and imbued with “the sweetness of the Lord.”

In reference to Florentinus’ Episcopal vocation, Paulinus observes that God had chosen him for “the role of his apostles” to “become a fisher of men,” who would “with the net of the saving Word, draw from the bitter, deep waves of this world a haul which God can invest with life rather than destruction.”

“In the course of our ascent, we must never stop and decide that we have gone far enough!
To stop would inevitably mean going backward.
Jesus and Mary are inviting and encouraging us to go higher and higher.

Have we been purified of sin, the defiler of the soul and the destroyer of human dignity?
Have we an intense horror, even of venial sin, which separates us from God and kills the life of grace?
It is still not enough – we must go higher.

Are we generous and unselfish in the fight to achieve holiness, guarding ourselves against the evil suggestions of the world, the flesh and the devil?
It is still not enough – we must continue to advance.

Do we carry the daily cross which God has entrusted to us and accept the burden with perfect resignation to His Holy Will?

AND by St Teresa’s Confessor,
St Peter of Alcantara OFM (1499-1562) Confessor:

“Strain not after tears,
strive not for sentiments of devotion,
do not force your heart.
Rest rather in interior solitude.
Dwell therein quietly, waiting
until God’s will be accomplished in you.
When it shall please Him to send you tears,
oh, how sweet will those tears be,
for is not your impatience
which has secured them –
they are the fruits of humility and of peace.
On your part, then, you must receive them
with the deepest self-effacement,
allowing God to work in you.”

St Teresa, who has written much in his praise,
says among other things:

“He died as he had lived, a Saint
and I have, after his death, received
many graces from God, through his intercession.
I have often seen him in great glory
and when I saw him the first time,
he said to me:
‘O happy penance, which has obtained
so great a glory for me!‘”

“Many will come from the east and the west and will recline… at the banquet in the Kingdom of Heaven” – Matthew 8:11

REFLECTION – “I have seen our Lord in the Gospel accomplish many miracles and, reassured by them, have strengthened my fearful words. I have seen the centurion throw himself at the Lord’s feet, nations send their firstfruits to Christ. The Cross has not yet been erected and already, pagans hasten towards their Master. The words “Go, teach all nations” have not yet been heard (Mt 28,19) but the nations are already hastening. Their race precedes their call, they are burning with desire for the Lord. The sound of preaching has not yet been heard but they are hurrying towards the One Who preaches. Peter… has now been instructed and they gather around the One Who is teaching him; the light of Paul has not yet blazed beneath Christ’s standard and nations are coming with incense to adore the King (Mt 2:1).

And now, see how a centurion begs Him and says to him: “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralysed, suffering dreadfully.” Here is a new miracle indeed! The servant, whose limbs are paralysed leads his master to the Lord; the slaves’ sickness gives health to his owner. Seeking his servant’s healing, he finds our Lord and while he is seeking for his slave’s cure, he becomes Christ’s conquest!” – Basil of Seleucia (Died c 468) Archbishop (Homily 19 on the centurion, PG 85, 235f).

PRAYER – Graciously hear us, O God, our Saviour that as we rejoice on the feast-day of blessed Teresa, Thy Virgin, we may be so nourished by the food of her heavenly teaching, as to learn how to serve Thee. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Saint of the Day – 15 October – Saint Sabinus (Died c760) Bishop of Catania, Sicily

Saint of the Day – 15 October – Saint Sabinus (Died c760) Bishop of Catania, Sicily, Hermit. Sabinus, in the list of Bishops of Catania, he is ranked in the 16th place after Saint James and before Saint Leo II.

Sabinus is remembered as one of the most esteemed and appreciated Bishops of Catania. We do not know how long his Episcopate lasted but we do know that at a certain point, burdened by the management of the Diocese, he decided to retire to a Monastery on the slopes of Mount Etna to devote himself completely to prayer. His choice of the ascetic life was imitated by some of his disciples who followed him and sought him as their teacher.

We do not know precisely the location of his retirement, only a few hagiographers have identified the location as the territory of the ancient district, immersed in the peace and tranquility of the local woods, called Zafferana Etna.

Saint Sabinus died there on 15 October 760.
The little information on the life of Saint Sabinus comes from the life of his successor, St Leo II.

REFLECTION – “ You have undertaken the office of a Bishop and now, seated in the stern of the Church, you are steering it in the teeth of the waves. Hold the rudder of faith fast that you may not be shaken by the heavy storms of this world. The sea, indeed, is vast and deep but fear not, for He hath founded it upon the seas and prepared it upon the floods. Rightly then, the Church of the Lord, amid all the seas of the world, stands immoveable, built as it were, upon the Apostolic rock and her foundation remains unshaken, by all the force of the raging surge. The waves lash but do not shake it and, although this world’s elements often break against it with a mighty sound, still, it offers a secure harbour of safety to receive the distressed.

Saint of the Day – 14 October – St Dominic Loricatus OSB.Cam (995-1060) Abbot,

Saint of the Day – 14 October – St Dominic Loricatus OSB.Cam (995-1060) Abbot Founder, Penitent, Hermit, friend and spiritual student of Saint Peter Damian. Born in 995 in Luceolis, Duchy of Spoleto, Italy and died on 14 October in 1060 in Poggio San Vicino, Marche of Camerino in Italy.

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “The departure from this world of St Dominic Loricatus.”

A Camaldolese Monk in Fonte Avellana, he was called by his friend and teacher St Peter Damian, to lead the new hermit community of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity which he had founded on the slopes of San Vicino.

He was the hero of penance, an unprecedented penance, entirely aimed at mortifying his body, to the point of wearing, without ever removing it, a kind of iron shirt with linked discs, the “lorica” (brestplate), from which he took his name.

He died on 14 October 1060 and his cult quickly spread wherever there was a Camaldolese community. His body was placed for veneration, in the Church of the Holy Trinity,which the Monks rebuilt between the late 13th and early 14th Centuries, dedicating it to him.

When the Monastery was abandoned in 1400, the spiritual care of Frontale and the cult of Saint Dominic were entrusted to the secular Clergy.

In 1776, the holy body was translated to the Church of Saint Anna in Frontale.

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery
The Crucifixion

“At last, Jesus reaches Calvary, breathless and reduced to utter exhaustion.
The instrument of torture is taken from Him and laid upon the ground.
Our divine Redeemer suffers acute pain as Her is again stripped of His garments, which have stuck to His wounds.
Now, He is stretched, an innocent victim, on the altar of sacrifice, the Cross.
One of the executioners grasps His hand, pierces it with a large nail and attaches it to the wood.
Then, he does the same with the other hand and with the two feet.
His Mother is close at hand.
She feels in her heart the blows of the hammer which lacerate the living flesh of Jesus.
Jesus remains silent “as a meek lamb that is carried to be a victim” (Jer 11:19).

Now, the executioners raise up the Cross and fix it in the hold already prepared for it.
The shock of this impact sends a shudder of terrible pain through the Victim’s members and entire frame.
Behold Him now, suspended between Heaven and earth, the Mediator between God and humanity, the Victim of Expiation for the innumerable sins of men.

Come near to the Cross and kiss the bloodstained feet.
While the Jews are insulting Him and most of the Apostles have abandoned Him, let us tell Him how much we love Him.
Let us tell Him of our sorrow for our sins and of our determination to make amends for our faults and for our ingratitude, by living in accordance with His teachings and example.”

“Blessed are those servants, whom the Master, on His return, shall find watching.” – Luke 12:37

REFLECTION – “In order to clarify the role of the servants,He set at the head of His people, the Lord spoke this word related in the Gospel: “Who, then is the faithful and prudent steward whom the Master will put in charge of His servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his Master on arrival, finds doing so”… If we should be wondering in what that food allowance consists, Saint Paul gives us the answer; it is “the measure of faith which God has apportioned” (Rom 12:). That which Christ called, an allowance of food, Paul termed, a measure of faith, to teach us that there is no other spiritual food than the Mystery of Christian faith. We give you this allowance of food in the Lord’s Name every time we speak to you according to the rule of the true Faith, illumined by the spiritual gift of grace. As for that allowance, you receive it at the hands of the Lord’s stewards each time you hear the Word of Truth from the mouth of God’s servants.

May that food allowance which God shares among us, be our nourishment. Let us draw from it the solid food of worthy behaviour, so that we may come to the reward of eternal life. For fear lest we collapse along the way, let us believe in Him, Who gives Himself to us as Food (Mt 15:32) and reserves Himself to be our Reward, that we may find joy when we reach our homeland. Let us believe and hope in Him; let us love Him above all and in all. For Christ is our Food and will be our Reward. O Immaculate Heart of Mary,

Saint of the Day – 13 October – Saint Venantius (5th Century) Confessor, Priest and Abbot of the Monastery later dedicated to him, St Venantius’ Monastery in Tours, France, Miracle-worker. Patronage – against Fever. Also known as – Venancio, Venancius, St Venantius of Tours, Wigand.

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Tours, St Venantius, Abbot and Confessor.”

Venantius, renouncing marriage with the consent of his wife and left Bourges. In Tours,he was admitted to the Monastery of the Abbot Silvius. On the death of Silvius, Venantius was elected as the new Abbot and led the Monks in a life of discipline and prayer.

He is credited with miracles during his life and after his death. His Tomb is in the Church of the Monastery of St. Venantius near the Basilica of St Martin of Tours.

St Venantius is invoked against fevers.

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery
The Road to Calvary

“Scourged, crowned with thorns and derided, Jesus is finally condemned to death.
Burdened with the Cross, He sets out for the place of execution in the midst of a crowd of enemies, blasphemers and idle speculators.
Among them , there is only a tiny group which sympathises with Jesus, namely, Mary His Mother, the devout women and the beloved Apostle, St John.

The divine Redeemer goes forward laboriously beneath the heavy weight of the Cross.
He has already lost a large quantity of blood in Gethsemane and during the scourging and crowning with thorns.
His strength seems to be failing but love sustains Him.
Looking feebly around Him, He sees the mocking Jews, the indifferent and disrespectful Roman soldiers and a throng of curious spectators looking for something to amuse them.
Is there nobody else?
Where are those whom He cured miraculously and those whom He comforted and forgave?
Has nobody any pity for Him?
Suddenly the crowd falls silent.
A woman, pale and tearful, is approaching Him, supported by her friends.
She defies the commands of soldiers and the scowls of the executions and comes close to Him.

Here and there, a murmur is heard – It must be His Mother, poor woman!
Jesus and Mary gaze at one another.
It would be impossible for us to guess at the immense depths of love contained in that loving exchange of glances.
Neither utters a word, for no words could express their anguish, nor manifest their love.
They look and understand one another, offering themselves as a holocaust for the redemption of wayward humanity.

Nevertheless, in this silent meeting, there was great consolation for the Heart of Jesus, for He had found someone who loved and understood Him, amongst those malicious throngs.
Why do we not sympathise with Him too and love Him with all our hearts?”

“And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic,

REFLECTION – “Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic: ‘Thy sins are forgiven thee,‘” The Lord is great! for the sake of the former he forgives the latter! He answers the prayer of the first and pardons the sins of the second.
O men, why is it that today your fellow traveller is unable to do anything for you, when, with the Lord, His servant has the right to intervene and to receive?

You who judge, learn to pardon and you who are ill, learn to beseech. If you have no hope of immediate pardon for grave sins, turn to intercessors, turn to the Church who will pray for you. Then, for her sake, the Lord will grant you the pardon He might have denied you. We do not ignore the historical truth of the paralytic’s cure but, above all, we acknowledge the healing of his interior self, whose sins are forgiven. …

The Lord wants to save sinners; He demonstrates His Divinity by His knowledge of what is secret and, by the wonders of His deeds. “Which is easier to say,” he asks: “’Your sins are forgiven’ or ‘Rise and walk’?” Here He gives us a complete image of the Resurrection since, in curing the wounds of soul and body … the whole man is healed!” – St Ambrose (340-397) ArchBishop of Milan, Father and Doctor of the Church (Commentary on Saint Luke’s Gospel V, 11-13).

PRAYER – Grant us, Thy servants, O Lord God, we beseech Thee, to enjoy lasting health of mind and bod y and by the intercession of the glorious and blessed Mary, ever Virgin, may we be delivered from present sorrow and partake to the full, of eternal happiness.Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Now that the Daylight Fills the Sky,
We Lift our Hearts to God on High

Now that the daylight fills the sky,
We lift our hearts to God on high
That He, in all we do or say,
Would keep us free from harm today,

Would guard our hearts and tongues from strife,
From angry words, would shield our life,
From evil sights, would turn our eyes
And close our ears to vanities.

So we, when this new day is gone
And night in turn is drawing on,
With conscience by the world unstained,
Shall praise His Name for vict’ry gained.

Saint of the Day – 12 October – Saint Maximilian (Died c284) Bishop and Martyr

Saint of the Day – 12 October – Saint Maximilian (Died c284) Missionary Bishop and Martyr of Celecia, Slovenia. Born in Celeia (modern Celje, Slovenia) and died there by being beheaded on 12 October c284. Patronages – of the Habsburg family (chosen in the 15th Century), Celje, Slovenia, of the Diocese if Linz, Austria, of the Diocese of Passau, Germany, (earliest mention in writing on 30 September 985). Also known as – Maximilian of Celaja, Maximilian of Celje, Maximilian of Cilli, Maximilian of Lauriacum, Maximilian of Lorch, Maximilian of Pongau, Massimiliano… Maksimilijan Celjski.

The Roman Martyrology reads today: “At Cilly, in Styria, St Maximilian, Bishop of Lorch.”

Maximilian was born in Celeia in the Roman Province of Noricum (in present-day Slovenia). He was the only child of rich and pious parents. After their death, Maximilian freed the family slaves and gave away his fortune to the poor.

He then made a pilgrimage to Rome, where St Pope Sixtus II sent him to Lauriacum (Lorch) in the Roman Province of Noricum, where he worked as a missionary during the latter half of the 3rd Century. He founded the Church of Lorch and became its 1st Bishop. After 20 years of work as the missionary Bishop, he returned to Celeia where he became a noted preacher.

Maximilian was beheaded by the Roman Prefect of Emperor Numerian after refusing to abandon Christianity and sacrifice to the pagan gods. He is remembered on 12 October (and in some locations on 29 October).

3 Martyrs – St Maximilian, St Stephen, St Valentine

His cult dates at least from the 8th Century. In that century, Saint Rupert built a Church in his honour at Bischofshofen in the Salzach valley and brought his rRlics there. In 985, some of his Relics were translated to Passau, Germany. In 1634, St Maximilian protected Passau from the Plague and his Relics were processed through Passau in beseeching his intercession.
