Friday of the Fourth Week of Advent 23 December 2016

Friday of the Fourth Week of Advent
23 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “John ”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed
and he spoke, blessing God.
When Zechariah could say “John,” that is, “God is Gracious,”
he was freed to give thanks and praise to God.

Let’s each of us express our gratitude to our God
for coming to be with us, for forgiving our sins,
for saving us from the power of death.
Let’s ask that we might be purified of all self-love
that we might receive His coming to us this week.

But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye. Mal. 3

Lift up Your heads and see; Your redemption is near at hand.

Closing Prayer:
Oh, Emmanuel,
“God-with-Us,”
You have touched me;
You are God-with-Me.

Thank You for these weeks of prayer.
In the spirit of the season
my waiting, my patience,
feels sacred.

Refine and purify my heart
with the hottest flame of Your love.
Give me the courage of Your prophets
and let me do what is right
even when others don’t understand.

Bless my heart with generosity
and make me ready to receive You.

Come, Lord Jesus! Come!

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child
DAY EIGHT – 23 December
The Life Of The Child Jesus In Egypt And In Nazareth.

O Jesus, my Saviour! When I consider how, for love of me, You spent thirty years of Your life hidden and unknown in a poor workshop, how can I desire the pleasures and honours and riches of the world? Gladly do I renounce all these things, since I wish to be Your companion on this earth, poor as You were, mortified and humble as You were, so that I may hope to be able one day to enjoy Your companionship in heaven. What are all the treasures and kingdoms of this world? You, O Jesus, are my only treasure, my only Good!

I keenly regret the many times in the past when I spurned Your friendship in order to satisfy my foolish whims. I am sorry for them with all my heart. For the future I would rather lose my life a thousand times than lose Your grace by sin. I wish never to offend You again but always to love You. Help me to remain faithful to You until death.

O Mary, you are the refuge of sinners, you are my hope. Amen.

One Minute Reflection – 23 December

One Minute Reflection – 23 December

On coming into the world, Jesus said ….. “”For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 6:38).   By one offering He has forever perfected those who are being sanctified.

REFLECTION – Jesus Christ, the God-Man, was born in a manger and is spiritually reborn on the altar.  He suffered on Calvary and continues to offer Himself on the altar.

In His earthly life He spread His teaching and worked miracles among the crowds.  In the Eucharist, He spans the centuries and communicates Himself to all………..St John Chrysostum.

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, in contemplating the birth of Your Son in time and in the Eucharist, may I ever attain a new birth.  May I through love of You, give my all to my neighbour in true charity.  Help me to learn from St John of Kanty to live in humility and whom we ask for intercession. St John of Kanty, Pray for us! Amen

Thursday of the Fourth Week of Advent – 22 December 2016

Thursday of the Fourth Week of
Advent – 22 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God, my saviour.”

Mary’s response (the Gospel) based upon Hannah’s prayer
(Responsorial Psalm) can be our prayer today.
Our anticipation of the coming of our Lord into our hearts grows
as we praise God for coming to us in our lowliness.

My heart exults in the Lord, my saviour.

Closing Prayer:
Oh, king of us all.
I find myself standing before
Your strength and splendour
watching, waiting
and filled with total joy.

You have lifted my mind in hope.
Now help me to open my life
to Your coming..

I want to be like Mary, Your mother.
Her wonderful courage and strength
inspire me to do the same.
She simply said Yes
and the impossible was done.

Thank You for this Advent journey.
The anticipation has filled my life
and made me long for
a closer relationship with You.

My life gets so busy that I forget to focus.
Thank You for guidance.
Thank You for the quiet moments
when I have felt Your love.

Nothing will be impossible with God.

Guide my feet on the way of peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child
Day Seven
Flight Of The Child Jesus Into Egypt.

Dear Infant Jesus, crying so bitterly! Yes, You have reason to weep in seeing Yourself persecuted by men whom You love so much. I, too, O God, have once persecuted You by my sins. But You know that now I love You more than myself and that nothing pains me more than the thought that I have so often spurned You, my sovereign Good.

Forgive me, O Jesus and let me bear You with me in my heart n all the rest of the journey that I have still to make through life, so that together with You I may enter into eternity. So often have I driven You from my soul by my sins. But now I love You above all things and I regret above other misfortunes that I have offended You. I wish to leave You no more, my beloved Lord. But You give me the strength to resist temptations. Never permit me to be separated from You again. Let me rather die than ever again lose Your good grace.

O Mary, my hope, make me always live in God’s love and then die in loving Him. Amen.

Thought for the Day – 22 December

………If we examine Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus, we find very similar motifs to Matthew’s – Matthew tells us that Herod, having been duped by the Magi, furiously lashed out, ordering the murder of every boy in Bethlehem under two years of age. Not exactly the reaction of someone who is just delighted that the Christmas season has arrived!  Luke sets up his story as the tale of two rival Emperors: Caesar, the king of the world and Jesus, the baby king. While Caesar rules from his palace in Rome, Jesus has no place to lay his head; while Caesar exercises rangy power, Jesus is wrapped in swaddling clothes; while Caesar surrounds himself with wealthy and sophisticated courtiers, Jesus is surrounded by animals and shepherds of the field. And yet, the baby king is more powerful than Augustus – which is signaled by the presence of an army (stratias in the Greek) of angels in the skies over Bethlehem.

All four of the Gospels play out as a struggle, culminating in the deadly business of the cross, between the worldly powers and the power of Christ. For Jesus is not simply a kindly prophet with a gentle message of forgiveness; he is God coming in person to assume command. He is the Lord. And the entire New Testament couldn’t be clearer that his Lordship means that all those who follow a contrary rule – meaning, pretty much every one of us – are under judgment.

To be sure, the distinctive mark of Jesus’ Lordship is love, compassion, forgiveness and non-violence – but this is not the stuff of sentimentality and warm feelings. It is a provocation, a challenge, a call to conversion of the most radical kind

Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Advent –
21 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. Luke 1

With just days until Christmas, we listen to readings of joy
and fulfillment.
We imagine the incredible meeting of Mary and Elizabeth.
With growing anticipation, we let ourselves simply believe
that the Lord’s many promises to us these weeks
will be fulfilled.

Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield,
For in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust…..Psalm 33

Closing Prayer:

Loving God,
It is growing in my heart:
An awareness and gratitude of Your constant love for me;
Like the sun rising in the East
to warm and comfort my life
and to bring new growth.

Thank You for these weeks of prayer.
In the spirit of the season
my waiting, my patience,
feels sacred.

Bless my heart with generosity
and make me ready to receive You.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY SIX

God’s Mercy Revealed In His Coming Down From Heaven To Save Us.

O my Dear Redeemer! Where should I be now, if You had not borne with me so patiently but had called me from life while I was in the state of sin? Since You have waited for me till now, forgive me quickly, O my Jesus, before death finds me still guilty of so many offenses that I have committed against You. I am so sorry for having vilely despised You, my sovereign Good, that I could die of grief. But You cannot abandon a soul that seeks You.

If hitherto I have forsaken You, I now seek You and love You. Yes, my God, I love You above all else; I love You more than myself. Help me, Lord, to love You always during the rest of my life. Nothing else do I seek of You. But this I beg of You, this I hope to receive from You, all my love only for You.

Mary, my hope, pray for me. If you pray for me, I am sure of grace. Amen.

Daily Meditation:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”

Mary could become the “temple of God’s Word”
because she was so ready to do God’s will.
As we approach this anniversary of our redemption,
let’s spend the day placing our life in God’s hands
embracing the ways He will come to us
and let us be His instruments for others.

Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child Day Five – 20 December

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child
DAY FIVE

The Life Of Sorrow Which Jesus Led From His Birth.

O Jesus, my sweet Love! I too have kept You suffering through all Your life. Tell me, then, what I must do in order to win Your forgiveness. I am ready to do all You ask of me. I am sorry, O sovereign Good, for all the offenses I have committed against You. I love You more than myself, or a least I feel a great desire to love You. Since it is You who has given me this desire, do You also give me the strength to love You exceedingly.

It is only right that I, who have offended You so much, should love You very much. Always remind me of the love You have borne me, in order that my soul may ever burn with love of You and long to please You alone. O God of love, I, who was once a slave of hell, now give myself all to You.
Graciously accept me and bind me to Yourself with the bonds of Your love. My Jesus, from this day and forever in loving You will I live and in loving Thee will I die.

O Mary, my Mother and my hope, help me to love your dear God and mine. This is the only favour I ask of you and through you I hope to receive it. Amen.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child
DAY FOUR – 19 December

The Life Of Humiliation Which Jesus Led From His Birth.

O Dearest Saviour,
You have embraced so many outrages for love of me, yet I have not been able to bear one word of insult without at once being filled with resentful thought, I who have so often deserved to be trodden under foot by the demons in hell! I am ashamed to appear before You, sinful and proud as I am. Yet do not drive me from Thy presence, O Lord, even though that is what I deserve. You have said that You will not spurn a contrite and humbled heart. I am sorry for the offenses I have committed against You. Forgive me, O Jesus. I will not offend You again.

For love of me You hast bore so many injuries; for love of You I will bear all the injuries that are done to me. I love You, Jesus, who was despised for love of me. I love You above every other good. Give me the grace to love You always and to bear every insult for love of You.

O Mary, recommend me to your Son; pray to Jesus for me. Amen
Amen.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent – 18 December 2016

The Fourth Sunday of Advent – 18 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Perhaps we can use these days to try to heighten our awareness of whatever is going on in our lives these days and how that can bring us to Christmas. Some examples might help.

So many of us experience the ironic reality that Christmas can be the most lonely time of our lives. Some of these “mixed feelings” or “sad feelings” are difficult to recognize or name.

For some of us, the Christmas we will celebrate this year pales in comparison to wonderful Christmases of our past – perhaps because we were younger or more “innocent” then, perhaps because some of our loved ones who were central to our Christmas are no longer living or not where I am, perhaps because the burdens and struggles of my life or the changes in our world and the war have robbed this Christmas of something that was there before.

For some of us, Christmas will be just another day. Unable to get out to go to church to be with a faith community and without family or friends to be with, Christmas will be a day we are tempted to ignore.

For some of us, Christmas inevitably means family conflicts. Facing the days ahead, whether it be the last few remaining parties, or conflicting demands of family and friends, or the friend or relative who drinks too much, or the experience I’m having that I drink too much and this season is an easy excuse.

For some of us, Christmas challenges us with terrible financial burdens. Children today become victims of the gross commercial exploitation of the day. For those of us struggling to make ends meet on a day to day basis, feeling the cultural pressure of buying for our children things which we can’t afford, can lead us to put more debt on the credit card in ways that simply push us further and further behind.

Some of us, might be really looking forward to Christmas and not be aware of these struggles with Christmas, yet feel that, in spite of our best efforts to make Advent different this year, there is still something missing and we still feel unready for Christmas.

For all of us, the story behind these days can draw us in and invite us to bring our lives to the mystery of how Jesus came into this world and why. Our best preparation for the Holy Night ahead and the Joyful Morning to follow is for us to reflect upon how He came. He came in the midst of scandal and conflict. He came in poverty. He was rejected before He was born. He was born in a feed trough. He was hunted down. And He grew up in obscurity.

He did not shun our world and its poverty and conflict. He embraced it. And hHe desires to embrace us today, in this day. Right where we are. Right where we are feeling most distant. Right were we are feeling least “religious” or “ready.” If we let Him come into our hearts to be our Saviour these challenging days, we will find ourselves entering the sacred night and morning of Christmas “joyful and triumphant” as never before.  And, are you tired of hearing this because you don’t know how to open the door to Him. JUST ASK HIM!  Just pray to Him in your own simple words “Come Lord show me, come Lord teach me, come Lord push the door open Yourself!” – and I find the best way is in Eucharistic Adoration and in prayer after Holy Communion – Come Lord, stay with me!

Come, Lord Jesus. Come and visit your people.
We await your coming. Come, O Lord.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child – Day Three – 18 December

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY THREE

The Life Of Poverty Which Jesus Led From His Birth

O Dear Infant Jesus, how could I be so ungrateful and offend You so often, if I realised how much You have suffered for me? But these tears which You shed, , this poverty which You embrace for love of me, makes me hope for the pardon of all the offenses I have committed against You.

My Jesus, I am sorry for having so often turned my back on You. But now I love Thee above all else. “My God and my all!”
From now on You, O my God, shall be my only treasure and my only good. With Saint Ignatius of Loyola I will say to You, “Give me the grace to love You; that is enough for me.” I long for nothing else; I want nothing else. You alone are enough for me, my Jesus, my life, my love.

O Mary, my Mother, obtain for me the grace that I may always love Jesus and always be loved by Him. Amen.

Saturday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 17 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever.

We now begin the second part of Advent.
We follow the Gospel story, as it bring us to Christmas.
Today, we hear the story of God’s plan,
using a long line of less-than-perfect kings
and 5 very special women, to bring us to Jesus.

God saved us, by becoming one of us,
entering into our human and sometimes messy history.

Jesus will come to each of us this Advent
in and through our human journey.

Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. Ps. 72

Closing Prayer:
Oh, God of wisdom,
I want to praise You and give You my life.

Like a loving parent,
You bless me.
You have watched over me,
knowing my history
and the path that led me to You.

You promise peace in my life.
I ask that I be always aware
of the strength of Your great power.
May it never leave me.

So many people before me
in so many generations,
have served You so humbly,
answering Your call.
Please give me the grace, wisdom and courage
to be Your humble servant.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child – Day Two – 17 December

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY TWO

God’s Love Revealed In His Being Born An Infant.

O Dearest Infant! Tell me, what have You come on earth to do? Tell me, whom do You seek? Yes, I already know. You have come to die for me, in order to save me from hell. You have come to seek me, the lost sheep, so that, instead of fleeing from You, I may rest in Your loving arms.
Ah my Jesus, my treasure, my life, my love and my all! Whom will I love, if not You? Where can I find a brother, a friend, a spouse more loving and lovable than You are?

I love You, my dear God; I love You, my only good. I regret the many years when I have not loved You but rather spurned and offended You. Forgive me, O my beloved Redeemer; for I am sorry that I have treated You thus and I regret it with all my heart. Pardon me, and give me the grace never more to withdraw from You but constantly to love You in all the years that still lie before me in this life. My love, I give myself entirely to You; accept me and do not reject me as I deserve.
O Mary, you are my advocate. By your prayers you obtain whatever you wish from your Son. Pray to Him then to forgive me,and to grant me holy perseverance until death. Amen.

Friday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 16 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
The Lord is coming from heaven in splendour to visit his people,
and bring them peace and eternal life.

We ask to be guided by His love.
He comes to us in more and more ways
as our longing grows.
At the same time, we are being prepared to receive even more grace
that we might be faithful in our daily lives.

Jesus is the Light that shines in the midst of any darkness and witnesses to us that He is being sent to us by His heavenly Father.
May we open our hearts to His coming.

Behold the king will come, the Lord of earth: and he will set us free.

Closing Prayer:
Jesus, You shine a light into the darkness of my life.
I am like a plant in limited sun,
and I find my being turning toward You
longing to be closer,
wanting only to draw near.

Help me to be faithful
in the big decisions of my life
and in the smallest of ways I live out each day.

My goal is salvation, Lord,
and I am painfully aware I can’t do that myself.
Teach me to be patient, to be faithful.

I know there is so much more grace I need
and so much more You want to give me.
Help me to be open to it and to recognize
the many gifts You give me each day.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

Christmas Novena to the Christ Child

DAY ONE
God’s Love Revealed In His Becoming Man.

O Great Son of God, You became man in order to make Yourself loved by men. But where is the love that men give You in return?
You gave Your life blood to save our souls. Why then are we so unappreciative that, instead of repaying You with love, we spurn You with ingratitude? And I, Lord, I myself more than others have ill treated You.
But Your Passion is my hope. For the sake of that love which led You to take upon Yourself human nature and to die for me on the cross, forgive me all the offenses I have committed against You.
I love You, O Word Incarnate; I love You, O infinite goodness. Out of love for You, that I could die of grief for these offenses.
Give me, O Jesus, Your love. Let me no longer live in ungrateful forgetfulness of the love You bear me.
I wish to love You always. Grant that I may always preserve in this holy desire.
O Mary, Mother of God and my Mother, pray for me that Your Son may give me the grace to love Him always, unto death.
Amen.

Thursday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 15 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

“My love shall never leave you.
“Raise a glad cry …
“Break forth in jubilant song …
“Fear not …”

Our God loves us – with “enduring love.”
Our God is in a relationship with us that is faithful, forgiving, healing.
Let us accept it, surrender to its power and feel the joy
and freedom growing in our hearts.

I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. Ps. 30

Closing Prayer:
God of salvation,
You promise us strength and courage in our lives
if only I ask.
You forgive me and touch me with Your enduring love.

My past life does not matter for

I have begged for Your pity and You have forgiven me

and You love me with such tenderness.

As I ponder the blessings of the days ahead,
and am so grateful for Your forgiveness,
I ask to feel the jubilation and song
break out in my life today.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil

Thought for the Day – 15 December

In her love of the crucified Christ, St Maria Crocifissa di Rosa, saw her mission in the suffering members of His Mystical Body.  She made their suffering her own and became the servant of all.  How often do we see Christ in others, especially those who are sick and suffering?  Perhaps this Advent I may pray that my eyes be opened to the suffering around me.

Wednesday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 14 December

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
I am the LORD, there is no other.
Turn to me and be safe.

We have heard the promises and we have begged for more hope.
Today we pray for His saving help and hear His personal invitation
to turn to Him, to find our safety in Him alone.

How might I yet place my trust in God’s love for me?
How might I yet surrender my independence?
How might my heart grow in anticipation and welcome
of the fullness of His coming to me this year?

Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above, like gentle rain let the skies drop it down.
Let the earth open and salvation bud forth; let justice also spring up! ISAIAH 45

Closing Prayer:
Dearest Lord,
Your invitation settles in my soul:
“Turn to me and be safe.”
Something lets go inside when I take those words into my heart.
They are an invitation for me to rest.

So many moments of my life are filled with my own needs.
“Turn to me and be safe,” You say to me again.
Give me the great grace to let go from the depths of my soul.
Help me to be released
from the demons I cling to with so much fear.

I hear Your invitation to ask for help
and I begin to list all the places in my life that need healing.
“Turn to me and be safe.”

You promise Your saving help
and I know it is the only thing that can heal me.
I feel Your presence in my life
and am aware of the growing joy I feel
as I anticipate celebrating the birth of Your son.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Tuesday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 13 December

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:

On that day, you need not be ashamed
of all your deeds, your rebellious actions against me.

The Lord’s coming promises us a time
when we need not fear. It will indeed be a time
of purifying, a time of humility and trust in God.
We ask for the grace to be like the child
whose mind is changed and says, “Yes”
to our Lord’s call.

Come, O Lord, do not delay;
forgive the sins of your people.

Closing Prayer:

Lord of such compassionate wisdom,
How often do I exalt myself and ignore You?
I look over the heads of my more humble brothers and sisters,
not seeing how they rely on You so much more than I do.
Help me to learn from them to make You
the center of my life.

You invite me to not be ashamed of what I have done in my life,
but instead offer me a refuge.

Let me call out to You; hear me:
Give me the grace to see those around me who are brokenhearted.
Guide me in staying with them in their sorrows.
I ask for the courage to help them in all the ways they need it
and to be Your servant on this earth.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Monday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 12 December

Monday of the Third/Gaudete Week of Advent – 12 December
“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
A star shall advance from Jacob,
and a staff shall rise from Israel.

The longing of God’s people lead to a hope
that God would save them.
God would replace their corrupt kings
and send them a saviour.
May our longing these days bring us closer
to our God’s desire to save us,
to shine the Light of Christ
on the darkness of our sin.

Your ways, O Lord, make known to me;
teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my saviour. Psalm 25

Closing Prayer:
Is it that I haven’t seen You, God?
Have I been looking someplace else for You?
Or have my eyes been covered
by the distractions in my life?

And yet You are so faithful in Your love for me.
I see now with a new vision and great hope,
because my heart is enraptured by Your love.

I pray to You and feel the power of Your coming,
like a light on the path before me
guiding me to return Your love even more.

Let me raise my voice
with new courage and deep joy
to give You praise with my life.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life

Amen.

The Third Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday or REJOICE Sunday – 11 December 2016

Gaudete Week – REJOICE Week
Our week begins with “Gaudete Sunday.” Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. It comes from the first word of the Entrance antiphon on Sunday. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near.” This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose coloured and the rose coloured vestments often used at the Eucharist.

The second part of Advent begins on December 17th each year – this year, in 2015, it is Thursday of the Third Week of Advent. For the last eight days before Christmas, the plan of the readings changes. The first readings are still from the prophesies, but now the gospels are from the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. We read the stories of faithful women and men who prepared the way for our salvation. We enter into the story of how Jesus’ life began. These stories are filled with hints of what his life will mean for us. Faith and generosity overcome impossibility. Poverty and persecution reveal glory.

Preparing our Hearts and asking for Grace

We prepare this week by feeling the joy. We move through this week feeling a part of the waiting world that rejoices because our longing has prepared us to believe the reign of God is close at hand. And so we consciously ask:

Prepare our hearts
and remove the sadness
that hinders us from feeling
the joy and hope
which His presence
will bestow.

Each morning this week, in that brief moment we are becoming accustomed to, we want to light a third inner candle. Three candles, going from expectation, to longing, to joy. They represent our inner preparation, or inner perspective. In this world of “conflict and division,” “greed and lust for power,” we begin each day this week with a sense of liberating joy. Perhaps we can pause, breathe deeply and say,

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my saviour.”

Each day this week, we will continue to go through our everyday life, but we will experience the difference our faith can bring to it. We are confident that the grace we ask for will be given us. We will encounter sin – in our own hearts and in our experience of the sin of the world. We can pause in those moments, and feel the joy of the words,

“You are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people
from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

We may experience the Light shining into dark places of our lives and showing us patterns of sinfulness and inviting us to experience God’s mercy, help and reconciliation. Perhaps we wish to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation this week. We may want to make gestures of reconciliation with a loved one, relative, friend or associate. With more light and joy, it is easier to say, “I’m sorry; let’s begin again.”

Each night this week we want to pause in gratitude. Whatever the day has brought, no matter how busy it has been, we can stop, before we fall asleep, to give thanks for a little more light, a little more freedom to walk by that light, in joy.

Our celebration of the coming of our Saviour in history, is opening us up to experience his coming to us this year and preparing us to await his coming in Glory.

Come, Lord Jesus. Come and visit your people.
We await your coming. Come, O Lord.

Saturday of the Second Week of Advent – 10 December 2016

Saturday of the Second Week of Advent – 10 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

God seems to like to prepare the way for our salvation.
We can experience prophets, even Elijah’s on fire with God’s word.
What are the messages, the stirrings, the signs of fire
that are preparing the way for the Lord to enter my life these days?
Can we make friends with these preparations for the Lord?

Blessed is he who shall have seen you
and who falls asleep in your friendship.

Closing Prayer:
Jesus,
in the darkness of these Advent nights
let me be guided by the light of Your word.
Give me the humility to be led by You
and the wisdom to learn from You.

I feel Your light in my life
and in the world.
I am grateful for the Saviour who is coming
and I eagerly await the time of rejoicing.
Let me look forward in hope
and turn to You with great trust,
knowing You will guide my steps
along the unknown path of this day.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Friday of the Second Week of Advent – 9 December 2016

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
I, the Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good
and lead you on the way you should go.

In our self-reliant independence, we can easily forget that
our God really knows what is good for us and calls us to that goodness.
In our rebellion, we sometimes cling to our freedom
to be self-destructive or to simply keep our life on a shallow level.
Let us allow ourselves to be drawn into the invitation to live our lives
touched by the grace of God-with-us.

Closing Prayer:
Jesus the Christ – God with us,
in the darkness of these Advent nights
let me be guided by the light of Your word.
Give me the humility to be led by You
and the wisdom to learn from You.

I feel Your light in my life
and in the world.
I am grateful for the Saviour who awaits us
and eagerly await the time of rejoicing.
Let me look forward in hope
and turn to You with great trust,
knowing You will guide my steps
along the unknown path of this day.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen

Thursday of the Second Week of Advent – 8 December

Thursday of the Second Week of Advent – 8 December
“Lord open my lips and my mouth shall declare Your praise.”
Daily Meditation:
The afflicted and the needy seek water in vain
The Lord is gracious and merciful; slow to anger and of great kindness.

So often we are “afflicted and needy”
and we seem to “seek water in vain.”
Today we listen to a refreshing promise
of how much our Lord desires to refresh us.
Each of us can add what we need the most
I am the LORD, your God, who grasps your right hand;
It is I who say to you, “Fear not, I will help you.”
Isaiah 41

Whoever has ears ought to hear.
Matthew 11

Closing Prayer:
Lord, like a loving parent,
You offer me Your comforting hand

Help me to wait for Your coming with patience
and to listen to what You ask of me.

I want so much to be one of “your people”
and to live my life in You.

Thank You for the way You bless my life.
Thank You for listening to my prayers
and for planting deep in my heart
the knowledge that with You,
nothing is impossible.

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

Wednesday of the Second Week of Advent – 7 December

“Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare your praise.”

Daily Meditation:
They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

Our Advent preparation is about growing in confidence
that our God can indeed save us.
So often our struggles make us very weary and tired.
When we really “get it” that the One who made us
truly desires to set us free,
we really begin longing at a new level
to know what it is to be restored to a new vitality.

They will soar as with eagles’ wings;
They will run and not grow weary,
walk and not grow faint.

Closing Prayer:
Loving and powerful God,
Some days I can only be in awe of Your power and love.
You never tire of supporting me.
I constantly ask for help
knowing You will always be there.

From some place deep in my soul,
I hear You calling me by name
and I prepare with a joyful heart for Your coming.

Grant me the gift of hope, patience and waiting in these Advent days
I want the focus of my waiting to be on You.
I want to praise and glorify You with my life.
Let me live my gratitude to You, rejoicing!

May the Lord bless us,
protect us from all evil
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen
