One Minute Reflection – 18 June – Delighting the Heart of God

One Minute Reflection – 18 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Thursday of the Eleventh week in Ordinary Time, Year A, Readings: Sirach 48:1-14 (1-15), Psalm 97:1-7, Matthew 6:7-15

“Do not be like them.   Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray then like this: Our Father … … Matthew 6:8-9

REFLECTION – “Engrave, pious soul, engrave this teaching deeply into your soul common to all masters of the spiritual life – after your infidelities you must turn back to God at once, even if you should fall a hundred times a day and, when you have done this, immediately set yourself at peace again. …   Between friends who love each other deeply, it is not uncommon, that a ruffled relationship is healed by humble apologies, which seals their friendship once more.   Act in such a way, that it is the same between yourself and God – use your faults to make your bond of love with Him even tighter.

It may happen to you, to be at a loss before a decision to be made, or advice to be given.   Here, too, don’t be afraid and do not neglect to act together with God as the faithful do amongst themselves.   In every event they consult among themselves – you, consult God, pray to Him to suggest the solution to you that will be most pleasing to Him, “Lord, set on my lips the word I am to speak and in my heart, the resolution to take!” (Jdt 9:18 Vg.)   Suggest to me what I have to do or answer and I shall do it.   “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Sam 3:10).

Again, give God the testimony of friendly trust by discussing with Him, not just about your personal affairs but also about those of your neighbour.   What pleasure you give to His heart if, sometimes even going so far as to forget your own worries, you call to His mind the interests of His glory and the misfortunes of others! …   “O God, so worthy of all love, make yourself known and loved.   May your kingdom be adored and blessed by all, may your love reign in every heart!”

Let us conclude.   If you wish to charm the loving Heart of your God, set yourself to talk to Him as often as you can and, after a fashion, continually, together with the fullest and most confident liberty.   He will not hold aloof from answering you and participating in the conversation on His part.” … St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696-1787) Most Zealous Doctor – What should one converse about with God?matthew 6 8-9 pray then like this - our father - if you wish to charm the loving heart of your god - st alphonsus liguori 18 june 2020

PRAYER – Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.

Our Morning Offering – 18 June – Be the Heart of My Heart By St John Eudes

Our Morning Offering – 18 June – Thursday of the Eleventh week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Be the Heart of My Heart
By St John Eudes (1501-1680)
Apostle of the Sacred Heart

O Heart all lovable
and all loving of my Saviour,
be the Heart of my heart,
the Soul of my soul,
the Spirit of my spirit,
the Life of my life
and the sole principle
of all my thoughts,
words and actions,
of all the faculties of my soul
and of all my senses,
both interior and exterior.
Amen

St John Eudes is the author of the Proper for the Mass and Divine Office of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ and the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin. St John was an ardent proponent of the Sacred Heart and dedicated himself to it’s promotion and celebration. The Masses he compiled for both the Sacred Heart of Jesus and for the Immaculate Heart of Mary, were both first celebrated during his lifetime. He preached missions across France, including Paris and Versailles, while earning recognition as a popular evangelist and confessor. St John Eudes was also a prolific writer and wrote on the two Holy Hearts despite opposition from the Jansenists.

St Eudes was Canonised on 31 May 1925 and his supporters are now petitioning to have him named, a Doctor of the Church.  Those of the Eudists, managing the process, collected evidence needed to support the idea and compiled it into a Positio dossier, which included the reasons for the proposal, as well as those spiritual works that would support it. This dossier was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in April 2017 for evaluation.be-the-heart-of-my-heart-st-john-eudes-16-june-2018 and 18 june 2020

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Eight – 17 June

day eight sacred heart novena 17 june 2020

Peace Be With You!

While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’   They were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.   He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened and why do doubts arise in your hearts?   Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself.   Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ … Luke 24: 36-39

Reflection for the Eighth Day
Peace;  Look;  Listen;  Go!   Jesus greets the apostles with that soothing word, ‘Shalom’ (Peace) – it means I wish you the fullness of well-being of mind and body and soul.   He then invites them to look at His hands and side.   He encourages them to listen to what the scriptures say about Him and then to go and preach the Good News, that He is Risen.

Today’s Prayer
Lord, You see my poverty
and You love me better than I can love myself.
Supply my wants according to Your mercy.
Help me to accept Your will,
without seeking to understand.
Help me to resign myself entirely
and absolutely to You
and thus, I shall have Your peace.
Amen

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning;
You are closest to us where we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least;
You forgive us mos, when we forgive ourselves least
and You call us to spread Your love in whatever way we can.
Lord Jesus, Your heart is moved with compassion
when we are suffering,
when we need your help
and when we pray for each other.
I ask You to listen to my prayer during this Novena
and grant what I ask.
…………………………. (Mention your intention silently.)
If what I ask, is not for my own good and the good of others,
grant me what is best,
that I may build up Your kingdom of love in our world.
Amen

Our Morning Offering – 17 June – Be my Strength, O Sacred Heart! By St Margaret Mary Alacoque

Our Morning Offering – 17 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” -Wednesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Be my Strength, O Sacred Heart!
By St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690)
Visionary of the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
I fly to Thee,
I unite myself to Thee,
I enclose myself in Thee!
Receive my call for help, O my Saviour,
as a sign of my horror of all within me,
contrary to Thy holy love.
Let me die rather a thousand times,
than consent to sin against Thee!
Be my strength, O God –
defend me,
protect me.
I am Thine and desire forever to be Thine!
Amen

What Strange Friends You Have, O Lord!

Today’s Scripture
“But I say to you listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” … Luke 6: 27-28

Reflection for the Seventh Day
You know the old saying, ‘Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are’ ?
Well, Jesus had the strangest set of friends Levi (a hated tax-collector), Simon the Zealot (a revolutionary), women in prostitution and other ‘public sinners.’
Maybe I’m not such bad company for Jesus, after all.
Just remember, they all repented upon meeting Jesus!

Today’s Prayer
Jesus, You once said,
‘I’ve come not to call the virtuous but sinners to repentance.’
During Your apostolate, You sat and ate with sinners.
This practice of Yours gives me great hope
that Your love, will bid me welcome too!
And, You will help me to be holy!
Amen

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning;
You are closest to us where we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least;

and when we pray for each other.

One Minute Reflection – 16 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Tuesday of the Eleventh week in Ordinary Time, Year A, Readings: 1 Kings 21:17-29, Psalm 51:3-6, 11, 16, Matthew 5:43-48 and the Memorial of Bl Donizetti Tavares de Lima (1882-1961)

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…   For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?” … Matthew 5:44,46matthew 5 44 and 46 but i say to you, love our enemies ... 16 june 2020

REFLECTION – “There is in the Community, a Sister who has the faculty of displeasing me in everything – in her ways, her words, her character, everything seems very disagreeable to me.   And still, she is a holy religious who must be very pleasing to God.   Not wishing to give into the natural antipathy I was experiencing, I told myself that charity must not consist in feelings but in works, then I set myself to doing for this Sister, what I would do for the person, whom I loved the most.   Each time I met her I prayed to God for her, offering Him all her virtues and merits.   I felt this was pleasing to Jesus, for there is no artist who doesn’t love to receive praise for his works and Jesus, the Artist of souls, is happy when we don’t stop at the exterior but, penetrating into the inner sanctuary where He chooses to dwell, we admire it’s beauty.

I wasn’t content simply with praying very much for this Sister, who gave me so many struggles but I took care to render her all the services possible and when I was tempted to answer her back in a disagreeable manner, I was content with giving her my most friendly smile and with changing the subject of the conversation. …  Frequently, when… I had occasion to work with this Sister, I used to run away like a deserter, whenever my struggles became too violent.   As she was absolutely unaware of my feelings for her, never did she suspect the motives for my conduct and she remained convinced that her character was very pleasing to me.   One day, at recreation, she asked in almost these words:  “Would you tell me, Sister Therese of the Child Jesus, what attracts you so much toward me, every time you look at me, I see you smile?”   Ah! what attracted me, was Jesus hidden in the depths of her soul, Jesus who makes sweet what is most bitter.” … St Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897) Doctor of the Churchmatthew 5 44 - love your enemies and pray - there is in the community, a sister who- st therese of the child jesus lisieux 16 june 2020.jpg snip

PRAYER – Almighty God, to whom this world, with all it’s goodness and beauty belongs, give us grace joyfully, to begin this day for Christ Your Son, in Him and with Him and to fill it, with an active love for all Your children, even those who may not like or who do us harm.   Help us to love as You do, so that we may become like You.   Bl Donizetti Tavares de Lima, you who spread your charity far and wide, pray for us. and I wish to make reparation for my sins
by casting them into the furnace
of His Merciful Love.
O my God! I ask of You for myself

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Six – 15 JuneDAY SIX SACRED HEART NOVENA 15 JUNE 2020

Honesty in Prayer

Today’s Scripture
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.   Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother.   When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home.   Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.   But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’   Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.’ … John 11:17-24

Reflection for the Sixth Day
St Ignatius Loyola said that we should always speak to Jesus in prayer just as one close friend would speak to another.
Don’t be afraid to express your real feelings to Jesus – anger, hurt, joy, sorrow, etc.
When you’ve made your complaint or expressed your joy, don’t forget one thing Listen for God’s response!
It may come in surprising ways.
If, you concentrate on Him all day, at every task, you will hear Him!

Today’s Prayer
Jesus, I have to be honest and tell You,
that there have been times when I’ve been angry with You
and I feel that You’ve let me down.
Help me to trust
that You really do have a loving plan for me
and for everyone,
a plan that most times I find hard to fathom.
I love and trust You Lord,
help me to love and trust You more each day!
Amen

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer

the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.

Our Morning Offering – 15 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Monday of the Eleventh Week of Ordinary Time, Year A

In Thy Divine Heart
By St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690)
Visionary of the Sacred Heart

Lord Jesus,
let my heart never rest
until it finds Thee,
Who are its source,
its love and its happiness.
By the wound in Thy Heart
pardon the sins I have committed,
whether out of weakness,
or out of evil desires.
Place my weak heart
in Thy own Divine Heart,
continually under Thy protection and guidance,
so that I may persevere in doing good
and in fleeing evil,
until my last breath.
Amen

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Five – 14 June

day five novena to the sacred heart 14 june 2020

Has no-one condemned you?

Today’s Scripture
Jesus straightened up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they?   Has no-one condemned you?’   She said, ‘No-one, sir.’   And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you.   Go your way and from now on do not sin again.’… John 8:10-11

Reflection for the Fifth Day
I read something recently which went like this:  ‘You do not have to be good before God will love you, you do not have to repent before you will be absolved by God.   It is all the other way around.   If you are good, it is because God’s love has already made you so, if you want to be forgiven, that is because God is forgiving you because you want to be forgiven!’

Today’s Prayer
Jesus, as I reflect upon Your Sacred Heart,
help me to have a deep felt knowledge
that You long to forgive my sins.
Your Sacred Heart is love made visible.
I need to love Your love and repent and repair.

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.

You love us most, when we love ourselves least;
You forgive us mos, when we forgive ourselves least
and You call us to spread Your love in whatever way we can.

Thought for the Day – 14 June – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

The Feast of Corpus Christi

only the immense love of god could conceive such a miracle - bacci 14 june 2020

“St Thomas Aquinas refers to the Blessed Eucharist as the greatest of all Jesus Christ’s miracles.

All the other miracles were accomplished in an instant or, at the most, protracted over a few years, like the raising to live of Lazarus, or the widow’s son at Naim.
The Eucharist, on the contrary, is a miracle which continues throughout the centuries and all over the world!

The other miracles, moreover, gave us a part of the power and goodness of Jesus.
But, the Eucharist gives us Jesus Himself with all His graces and gifts.
It was not enough for Our Lord to offer Himself on Calvary as a propitiary host for our sins.
It was not enough for Him to shed His precious Blood for our redemption.
It was not enough to give us the Church to instruct us and to guide us on the way to Heaven.

He wished to give us Himself in addition.
He wished to remain with us as our companion on our mortal pilgrimage and as the spiritual nourishment of our souls.

The power of Jesus is as infinite as His charity.
Nevertheless, in the Eucharist, this power and charity are, as it were, exhausted.
Only the immense love of God, could conceive such a miracle.

When we consider this mysterious gift which Jesus has given to each of us, we cannot say that it is too difficult for us to conquer the perverse inclinations of our corrupted nature and that we lack the strength to continue on the way of perfection.
Everything is possible with Jesus.
“I can do all things in him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13).

Let us go to Jesus and take our nourishment from Him.
Then, like St Paul, we shall be able to do everything in Him, Who is our strength and our support.
In union with Jesus, we shall be able to conquer sin and to become holy. amen.”

Moments with St John XXIII (1881-1963)
Sacrament of Love

When the Christians of the first centuries met around the Table of the Eucharist, they prayed with hearts full of love and longing:

“To You, O Lord, be glory forever!
As this Bread we have broken together,
was once scattered in ears of corn on the hills
and became one, when it was harvested,
so let Your Church be gathered
from the ends of the earth into Your Kingdom.
For Yours is the glory and the power,
through Jesus Christ, forever.”

The doctrine of the Mystical Body, has cast gleams of shining light on this question of the union of Christians with Christ and, for their union with each other.
It has resulted in an amazing understanding of the union of the masses of the faithful, through the power of the Body and Blood of Christ, drawn together to scale the heights of Christian perfection.

In the light of this teaching, we find the truest conception of human, and Catholic brotherhood, inspired and renewed by the Holy Eucharist.

O Sacrament of love, may You always remain inviolate at the summit of Catholic doctrine and devotion!
Open our minds to soaring flights of thought and our hearts to the impulses of charity.
Lead us onto the fulfilment of the supreme ideals of justice and social peace.

page lingua hail our saviours glorious body - corpus christi 14 june 2020

Hail Our Saviour’s Glorious Body
By St Thomas Aquinas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Doctor angelicus/Doctor communis

Translated by Fr James Quinn SJ (1919-2010)

Hail our Saviour’s glorious Body,
which His Virgin Mother bore.
Hail the blood which bled for sinners,
did a broken world restore.
Hail the sacrament most holy,
flesh and blood of Christ adore!

To the Virgin, for our healing,
His own Son, the Father sends.
From the Father’s love proceeding
sower, seed and word descends;
wondrous life of Word Incarnate
with His greatest wonder ends.

On that paschal evening see Him
with the chosen twelve recline,
to the old law still obedient
in its feast of love divine,
love divine, the new law giving,
gives Himself as bread and wine.

By His word the Word Almighty
makes of bread His flesh indeed,
wine becomes His very lifeblood,
faith God’s living Word must heed!
Faith alone might simply guide us
where the senses cannot lead.

When the Procession reaches the place of Benediction, the priest sets the Monstrance down. Then he puts incense in the thurible and, kneeling, incenses the Blessed Sacrament, while Tantum ergo Sacramentum is sung.

Come, adore this wondrous presence,
bow to Christ, the source of grace!
Here is kept the ancient promise
of God’s earthly dwelling place!
Sight is blind before God’s glory,
faith alone may see His face!

Glory be to God the Father,
praise to His co-equal Son,
Adoration to the Spirit,
bond of love, in God-head one!
Blest be God by all creation
joyously while ages run!

REFLECTION – “God elaborates on a suitable and wholesome new diet for the newly-formed and newborn babe.   He says it consists of the one who nourishes and who is the Father of all, that are generated and regenerated—just as manna, the celestial food of angels, flowed down from heaven on the ancient Hebrews.
But when our kind and loving Father rained down the Word, He Himself, became spiritual nourishment to the good.
This is a truly amazing mystery because, this is the kind of diet the Lord administers, He offers His flesh and pours out His blood so that nothing is lacking for His children’s growth.   This is almost too much to take in!
And then, we are to throw out the old and carnal corruption, our old diet, receiving in exchange a totally new diet — Christ Himself, as we ingest Him for Him to remain hidden there.
Then, with our Saviour enshrined in our souls, as it were, we can correct the affections of our flesh.” … St Clement of Alexandria (150-215) Father of the Church – Christ the Educator, 1but when our kind and loving father rained down the Word He Himself became - st clement of Alex 14 june 2020 corpus christi

PRAYER – Lord Jesus Christ, You gave Your Church, an admirable Sacrament as the abiding memorial of Your Passion.   Teach us to worship the sacred mystery of Your Body and Blood, that it’s redeeming power may sanctify us always.   Who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, God, forever, amen.mark 14 22 this is my body

Prayer to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus
By The Benedictines of Perpetual Adoration

In response to Your Presence, O Lord,
I offer You my presence.
In response to Your silence,
I offer You my silence.
In response to the gaze of Your Eucharistic Face,
I offer You my eyes.
In response to Your Eucharistic Heart,
I offer You every heartbeat of mine.
In response to the mystery of Your Eucharistic poverty,
I offer You my poverty.
My one desire is to remain before You
even as You remain before me

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Day Four – 13 June

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Four – 13 June

DAY FOUR NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART - 13 JUNE 2020

How Do We Look at Each Other?

Today’s Scripture
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing;  go, sell what you own and give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’   When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. … Mark 10: 21-22

Reflection for the Fourth Day
A Dominican theologian once wrote, ‘A person is enlightened not when they get an idea but when someone looks at them.’   How we look at another has tremendous consequences for self-esteem.   The Sacred Heart looks at each one of us with deep love, understanding and compassion.   We are called to look at others in the same way.

Today’s Prayer
Jesus,
You looked at the rich young man with love
and yet, he could not respond to Your call.
Help our prayer, to become,
our looking at You looking at us
and smiling with love,
so that we will not run
from the love that You offer.

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning;
You are closest to us where we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least;
Amen

Our Morning Offering – 13 June – Lord, Give Me Your Heart By St Claude de la Colombiere

Our Morning Offering – 13 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Saturday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Lord, Give Me Your Heart
By St Claude de la Colombiere SJ (1641-1682)
Apostle of Devotion to the Sacred Heart
and Spiritual Director to St Margaret Mary Alacoque

O God, what will You do to conquer
the fearful hardness of our hearts?
Lord, You must give us new hearts,
tender hearts, sensitive hearts,
to replace hearts that are made
of marble and of bronze.
You must give us Your own Heart, Jesus.
Come, lovable Heart of Jesus.
Place Your Heart deep
in the centre of our hearts
and enkindle in each heart
a flame of love as strong,
as great, as the sum of all the reasons
that we have for loving You, my God.
O holy Heart of Jesus,
dwell hidden in our hearts,
so that we may live only in You
and only for You,
so that, in the end, we may live
with You eternally in heaven.

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Three – 12 June

DAY THREE SACRED HEART NOVENA 12 JUNE 2020

When I find Prayer difficult.

Today’s Scripture
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.   And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints, according to the will of God.   We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. …Romans 8: 26-28

Reflection for the Third Day
St Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897) once said, that love was her vocation in life. Never was this vocation tested more than in the last nine months of her life, as she lay dying with tuberculosis. She wrote a note to her sister Céline
‘Here is great love, to love Jesus without feeling the sweetness of His love – that is love, pushed to the point of heroism.’

Today’s Prayer
Jesus, I believe.
Help my unbelief.
Jesus, You are the real bedrock of my hope.
Help me always to rely on You,
especially in times of doubt and trouble.
For in You, I live and move and have my being!

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning;
You are closest to us where we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least;

Thought for the Day – 12 June – “Unless You Turn and Become Like Little Children, You Will Not Enter into the Kingdom of Heaven”

Thought for the Day -12 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

“Unless You Turn and Become Like Little Children, You Will Not Enter into the Kingdom of Heaven”

anyone who makes himself insignificant - bacci - little children 12 june 2020

“At the beginning of their ministry, before they had been strengthened and enlightened by the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were as ambitious as most other men.
One day, the mother of John and James, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and asked Him, if her two sons could have precedence over the other Apostles and sit on the highest thrones in His kingdom, one at His right hand and the other at His left.
Jesus disapproved of this desire to predominate. “Whoever wishes to become great among you,” He said, “shall be your servant and, whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; even as the Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:26-28).

On another occasion, the Apostles came to Jesus and asked Him, which of them would be the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus’ only answer was to call a little child and to place him in the centre of the group.
“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.   Whoever, therefore, humbles himself as this little child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 18:3-4).

This is the lofty teaching of the Gospel.
If we wish to be great and pleasing in the eyes of God, we must be unimportant in our own regard and in our relations with men.
The Gospel involves an overthrow of human values.
Anyone who makes himself insignificant, will become great.
Anyone who tries to make himself out to be a great man, becomes of little account in the eyes of God.
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Cf Js 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5).
If we wish to please the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the first thing we must do, is become as little children.
In other words, we shall have to suppress our ambition and vanity and destroy our self-love, so that, the Sacred Heart may fill our hearts with the love of God alone!”

Our Morning Offering – 12 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Friday of the Tenth Week of Ordinary Time, Year A

Act of Love to the Sacred Heart
By Servant of God Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val (1865-1930)

Reveal Your Sacred Heart to me, O Jesus
and show me Its attractions.
Unite me to It forever.
Grant that all my aspirations
and all the beats of my heart,
which cease, not even while I sleep,
may be a testimonial to You,
of my love for You
and may say to You –
“Yes, Lord, I am all Yours”
the pledge of my allegiance to You,
rests forever in my heart
and will never cease to be there.
May You accept,
the slight amount of good that I do
and be graciously pleased,
to repair all my wrong-doing;
so that I may be able,
to bless You in time
and in eternity.

Thought for the Day – 11 June – Learn From Me, For I Am Meek and Humble of Heart

Thought for the Day – 11 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

“Learn From Me, For I Am Meek and Humble of Heart”

when we are disturbed pride - bacci 11 june 2020

“Jesus is perfection itself.
In Him, therefore, every virtue is to be found.
He could truly claim that He fulfilled in Himself the precept: “You are to be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt 5:48).
Throughout His life, He performed in a perfect manner, the will of His heavenly Father:  “I do always the things that are pleasing to Him” (Jn 8:29).

Jesus Christ provided us with an example of every virtue.
As the foundation of all the virtues, He insisted on the great precept of loving God above all things and our neighbour as ourselves.
In proposing Himself as a model, however, this is what He said: “Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart and ou will find rest for your souls” (Mt 11:29).
The outstanding example which Jesus gave us for our imitation, was this meekness and humility of heart.
We shall have peace of soul only, if we are meek and humble.

In what did the humility of Jesus consist?
He was God and He became man.
He Who possessed everything was born poor in a wretched stable and lived as a lowly workman for thirty years.
He allowed Himself to be betrayed by one of His Apostles, to be sentenced to death as an evildoer and, finally, to be executed on the Cross.

He combined humility with gentleness.
He was happy when He could receive back penitent sinners and grant them forgiveness and peace.
Let us recall the examples of Mary Magdalen, the adulteress, the lost sheep, the prodigal son and, finally, the repentant thief, to whom He promised the reward of Heaven.
What greater gentleness and mercy could we ever find?

To the present day, moreover, Jesus Christ is hidden in the Blessed Eucharist under the consecrated species and appeals to us to imitate and love Him.

When we are disturbed by pride, ambition, or worldly desires, let us go to Jesus and kneel in silence before the Tabernacle.
“Learn from me,” He will say to us once more, “for I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls.”

Novena in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Day Two – 11 June

day two novena to the sacred heart 11 june 2020

What Does God Desire?

Today’s Scripture
‘So I say to you, ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened for you.
For everyone who asks, receives
and everyone who seeks, finds
and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. … Luke 11: 9-10

Reflection for the Second Day
St Augustine said, ‘For yourself you have made us, O Lord and our hearts are restless, until they rest in you.’
I love a change a modern theologian has made in those lines – he writes: ‘Your heart is restless, until we rest in you.’
Our God is vulnerable to our free response.
He waits for our love.

Today’s Prayer
Lord, I come to You full of needs.
But my deepest need,
is to become more convinced of Your love for me.
Help me to believe
that You are with me today,
tomorrow and always
because, You love me!
Amen

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning;
You are closest to us where we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least;
Amen

Our Morning Offering – 11 June – Unite Me to Your Sacred Heart By Bl Angela Truszkowska

Our Morning Offering – 11 June -“Month of the Sacred Heart” – Thursday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Unite Me to Your Sacred Heart
By Blessed Angela Truszkowska (1825-1899)

My Lord, You bid us to suffer,
therefore, my poor soul desires it.
I want to suffer, O Jesus but with You,
to suffer but for the love of You,
to suffer but in silence and in solitude,
so that no-one would know that I suffer, only You,
so that only You would hear the groanings of my soul
and only You would see my tears.
Ah! Teach me, O Lord,
to suffer in that way,
teach me to suffer, without seeking any consolation,
to suffer, without craving the sympathy of creatures,
to suffer, without even expecting the eternal joys of heaven.
Teach me to suffer,
not because suffering is the source of merit and glory
but because, it unites us to You and makes our hearts
like unto your Sacred Heart.
Amen

(The text was written on sheets of paper bound together with two works of St Alphonsus Ligouri. Mother Angela gave this book to Sr Anna Bielska as a gift on the first anniversary of her profession, 8 December 1861.)

Day One

DAY ONE SACRED HEART NOVENA 10 JUNE 2020

What do You Desire?

Today’s Scripture
The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples and, as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God!’   The two disciples heard him say this and they followed Jesus. … John 1: 35-3

Reflection for the First Day
Jesus addresses the same question to you at the beginning of this novena
‘What do you want?’
St Augustine said that all our desires are really a longing for God in disguise, where there is real desire, there is prayer.   So, be at peace in your desire, you are already praying!

Today’s Prayer
Lord, I come to You at the start of this Novena
with a muddle of desires.
Give me courage,
to listen to what You want to say to me
and give me the strength
to accept Your loving desires for me and for my loved ones.

Daily Invocation
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

Novena Prayer
Lord Jesus,
the needs of Your people open Your heart in love for each of us.
You care for us when we are lost,
sympathise with us in loneliness
and comfort us in mourning.
You are closest to us, when we are weakest.
You love us most, when we love ourselves least.
You forgive us most, when we forgive ourselves least
and You call us to spread Your love, in whatever way we can.
Lord Jesus, Your heart is moved with compassion
when we are suffering,
when we need Your help
and, when we pray for each other.
I ask You to listen to my prayer during this Novena
and grant what I ask.

Thought for the Day – 10 June – “Month of the Sacred Heart” – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Surmounted by a Flaming Cross

god's justice is as infinite as his charity - bacci - 10 june 2020

“St Margaret Mary saw the Sacred Heart of Jesus, surmounted by flames in the midst of which, a Cross was raised on high.
These flames and this Cross, were the symbol of the infinite love of Jesus.
Let us reflect a little.
God, immeasurably happy in Himself, wished to communicate a share in His happiness to men, whom He created in a state of earthly happiness.
He was offended by men and, when He saw that they were heading for destruction, He sent His Eternal Word to them.
The Word took a human nature and became our brother;  He preached the way to Heaven and gave us the means to achieve it.
More than this, He offered Himself as a divine victim of expiation for our sins.
Having been condemned by those whom He had come to show the way, He died on the Cross and shed all His Blood, for our salvation.

Pagans of all times have called this “the folly of the cross.”
In fact, it is the miracle of the infinite love of God for humanity.
Let us remember, however, that, although His love and goodness are infinite, so also is His justice!
It is an overwhelming miracle of love on the part of God, that He became man and died for us.
It will be our own downfall if we fail to co-operate with this miracle of love!

The same Jesus, Who died on the Cross for us and revealed His Heart, pierced and flaming with love, will one day appear with the same glorious sign of the Cross, as our Supreme Judge.
Then, He will say to the wicked: “Depart from me, accursed ones, into everlasting fire!”

God’s justice is, as infinite as His charity!
We must choose either the way of the Cross, the way of love and goodness to which the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites us, or the way of sin, which leads to the gulf of ruin and the final condemnation of the Supreme Judge.
This is the tremendous choice we have to make.”

but strengthen my faith,
Heart of Jesus, I love Thee
but increase my love.
Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee,
but give greater vigour
to my confidence.
Heart of Jesus,
I give my heart to Thee,
but so enclose it in Thee
that it may never

so that I may be able

The Crown of Thorns Which Surrounds the Sacred Heart

he showed his heart encircled by a crown of thorns - bacci 9 june 2020

“When Jesus appeared to St Margaret Mary, He showed her His Heart encircled by a crown of sharp thorns.
What is the significance of this?
In Heaven, Jesus is happy and cannot suffer anymore.
The Angels, Saints and the whole of creation, sing a hymn of unceasing praise in His honour.
Nevertheless, He sees the immense tide of sin, which surges forth from the human race which He redeemed by His Precious Blood, a redemption now made futile by many.
He is aware of the insane blasphemies hurled by so many against His lofty throne.
He sees how His gifts, His Sacraments and His graces are abused by many.
He sees, finally, the number of privileged souls, often consecrated to His service, who are indifferent and ungrateful, while, they should be trying to make reparation for the evils of mankind by their love, prayers and penances.
The explanation for this mystical crown of thorns, lies in His infinite love.
He does not suffer anymore because, He cannot suffer but He still has an immense love for all men, even for sinners and for those who are lukewarm and ungrateful.
He loves and wishes to save all men.
In spite of their sinfulness and ingratitude.
He still calls them appealingly to His Heart, which they, by their sins, have crowned with thorns and pierced with a lance.

This is a mystery of love which we cannot properly understand.
Only a man who loves Jesus fervently, can even have the slightest understanding of it.
If we sincerely love the divine Heart of Jesus, we shall realise, that these sharp thorns which once pierced His Heart in Gethsemane and on Calvary, were caused by our sins.
Then, we shall do our best to make a generous return for such love and to make reparation, even with grave sacrifice, for the offences which are still being committed by men against the loving Heart of the Redeemer.”

ANNOUNCING the NOVENA to the SACRED HEART BEGINS Wednesday 10 JUNE

ANNOUNCING the NOVENA to the SACRED HEART BEGINS Wednesday 10 JUNE

announcing the sacred heart novena begins wed 10 june

This devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ is nothing more than an exercise of love towards this amiable Saviour.
But as to the principal object of this devotion, the spiritual object is the love with which the Heart of Jesus Christ is inflamed towards men, because love is generally attributed to the heart, as we read in many places of Scripture:   My son, give Me thy heart. [Prov. xxiii. 26]   My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God. [Ps. lxxxiii. 3]   The God of my heart and the God that is my portion forever. [Ps. lxxii. 26] The charity of God is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Ghost Who is given to us. [Rom. v. 5]
The material or sensible object is the most Sacred Heart of Jesus, not taken separately by Itself but united to His sacred humanity and, consequently, to the Divine Person of the Word.

“How do we serve God faithfully? We serve Him only as faithfully as we serve Him lovingly, by giving ourselves to the needs of everyone whom God puts into our lives.   No-one reaches heaven automatically. Heaven must be dearly paid for.   The price of reaching heaven is the practice of selfless love here on earth.

… Devotion of the Sacred Heart is the solution to the gravest problem in the modern world today.   How can we give ourselves to those who do not love us, who even positively hate us?   We can love them, with the help of divine grace, by following the example of Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross out of love for a sin-laden human race.”Ven Servant of God Fr John A Hardon SJ (1914-2000)

Our Response to the Love

of the Sacred Heart

he has bound us to his heart by a loving chain of graces - bacci - 8 june 2020

“The Sacred Heart of Jesus is adorable in itself, not only as the living symbol of His human-divine love but, also, as part of His most holy humanity, insofar as it is hypostatically united to the divinity of the Word.

We should, therefore, pay very special homage to the Sacred Heart.
It is the Heart of the God-Man and, as such, is worthy of our highest adoration.
It’s sentiments harmonised mysteriously with the human will and, at the same time, with the divine Will of the Incarnate Word of God.
Every throb, was a token of an infinite love which we could never fully understand, for we cannot properly “know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge” (Eph 3:19).
But, we should adore this love as represented by the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The adoration is not an act of idolatory.
On the contrary, it is a fitting act of worship, because, it’s object is the Heart of the God-Man and, of the human-divine love of which it is the symbol.
Moreover, we owe the Sacred Heart of Jesus, all our gratitude and a return of love.

Let us reflect on how much Jesus has done for us and how much He has loved us.
Let us consider, not only the general work of Redemption and the supernatural gifts and graces connected with it but, also, the particular favours which we received from our childhood, up to the present moment.
He has bound us to His Heart by a loving chain of graces and of mercies!
How could we dare to break this chain, or to ignore such love?
Love demands love in return.
Favours demand gratitude.
It would be disastrous for us to display indifference and coldness, or, worse still, to respond to such great love, by committing new offences!”
