REFLECTION – “Strain not after tears, strive not for sentiments of devotion, do not force your heart.   Rest rather in interior solitude.   Dwell therein quietly, waiting until God’s will be accomplished in you.   When it shall please Him to send you tears, oh, how sweet will those tears be, for is not your impatience that has secured them:  they are the fruits of humility and of peace.   On your part, then, you must receive them with the deepest self-effacement, allowing God to work in you.   Note well, that if ever you fancy this desire or the securing of these affections to be in any measure due to yourself, you will infallibly expose yourself to the losing of them.”…St Peter of Alcantara – Treatise on Prayer and Meditation’

PRAYER – My Lord and patient God, help me to practice patience in doing good.   No matter what may occur, allow me to face each day with quiet courage and without complaint, knowing You are always at my side and that all is part of Your divine plan.  I pray for total abandonment to Your Will.   Grant that by the intercession of St Peter of Alcantara, we may grow in trust, leaving all in our Father’s hands.   We make our prayer through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 9 October –

The Memorial of Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

“I have a place in God’s counsels,
in God’s world, which no one else has,
whether I be rich or poor,
despised or esteemed by man,
God knows me and calls me by my name.
God has created me to do Him
some definite service.
He has committed some work to me
which He has not committed to another.
I have my mission – I never may know it in this life
but I shall be told it in the next.
Somehow I am necessary for His purposes,
as necessary in my place as an Archangel in his –
if, indeed, I fail, He can raise another,
as He could make the stones children of Abraham.
Yet I have a part in this great work,
I am a link in a chain,
a bond of connection between persons.
He has not created me for naught.
I shall do good, I shall do His work,
I shall be an angel of peace,
a preacher of truth in my own place,
while not intending it,
if I do but keep His commandments
and serve Him in my calling.

Therefore I will trust Him.
Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away.
If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him,
in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him,
if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him.
My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow
may be necessary causes of some great end,
which is quite beyond us.
He does nothing in vain –
He may prolong my life, He may shorten it;
He knows what He is about.
He may take away my friends,
He may throw me among strangers,
He may make me feel desolate,
make my spirits sink, hide the future from me
– still He knows what He is about.”i have a place in god's counsels - bl john henry newman - 9 october 2018

Thought for the Day – 5 October – The Memorial of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos C.Ss.R. (1819-1867)
“The Cheerful Ascetic”

From His Preaching:  On Divine Mercy

“Oh, if only all the sinners of the whole wide world were present here!   Yes, even the greatest, the most hardened, even those close to despair, I would call out to them, “The Lord God is merciful and gracious, patient and of much compassion” (Exodus 34:6). I would show them why the Apostles call God the Father of Mercy, the God of all consolation.   I would tell them that the prophet in the Old Testament even said that the earth is full of the mercy of God and that mercy is above all His works.

O, Mother of Mercy!   You understood the mercy of God when you cried out in the Magnificat, “His mercy is from generation to generation!”   Obtain for all sinners a childlike confidence in the mercy of God.

It is not His justice but His mercy which is the motive of your trust.   He is the God of all consolations and the Father of mercies.   He does wish the death of a sinner but that he be converted and live.   He came to heal the sick and to seek those who were lost.   He spared the woman taken in adultery.   He showed mercy to the thief crucified with Him. He took upon Himself our punishment.   He prayed for His murderers.   He now intercedes for us at the right hand of God.   None of the damned was ever lost because his sin was too great but because his trust was too small.”

Thought for the Day – 3 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:57–62

Thought for the Day – 3 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:57–62

To another he said, “Follow me.”   But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”...Luke 9:59-60

Following and accompanying Christ, staying with Him, demands “coming out of ourselves”, requires us to be outgoing – to come out of ourselves, out of a dreary way of living faith that has become a habit, out of the temptation to withdraw into our own plans which end by shutting out God’s creative action.

God came out of Himself to come among us, He pitched his tent among us to bring to us His mercy that saves and gives hope.
If we want to follow Him and to remain with Him, we too must “go out” with Him to seek the lost sheep, the one that has strayed the furthest.

To come out always!   And to do so with God’s love and tenderness, with respect and with patience, knowing that God takes our hands, our feet, our heart and guides them and makes all our actions fruitful...

Thought for the Day – 1 October – The Memorial of St Thérèse of Lisieux O.C.D. (1873 – 1897) Doctor of the Church

Excerpt from Pope Benedict’s Catechesis on St Thérèse – 6 April 2011

“Today I would like to talk to you about St Thérèse of Lisieux, Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face, who lived in this world for only 24 years, at the end of the 19th century, leading a very simple and hidden life but who, after her death and the publication of her writings, became one of the best-known and best-loved saints. “Little Thérèse” has never stopped helping the simplest souls, the little, the poor and the suffering who pray to her.

I would like to invite you to rediscover this small-great treasure, this luminous comment on the Gospel lived to the full!   The Story of a Soul, in fact, is a marvellous story of Love, told with such authenticity, simplicity and freshness that the reader cannot but be fascinated by it!   But what was this Love that filled Thérèse’s whole life, from childhood to death?   Dear friends, this Love has a Face, it has a Name, it is Jesus!   The Saint speaks continuously of Jesus.

Dear friends, we too, with St Thérèse of the Child Jesus must be able to repeat to the Lord every day that we want to live of love for Him and for others, to learn at the school of the saints to love authentically and totally.  Thérèse is one of the “little” ones of the Gospel who let themselves be led by God to the depths of his Mystery.   A guide for all, especially those who, in the People of God, carry out their ministry as theologians.   With humility and charity, faith and hope, Thérèse continually entered the heart of Sacred Scripture which contains the Mystery of Christ.   And this interpretation of the Bible, nourished by the science of love, is not in opposition to academic knowledge.   The science of the saints, in fact, of which she herself speaks on the last page of her The Story of a Soul, is the loftiest science.

In the Gospel Thérèse discovered above all the Mercy of Jesus, to the point that she said: “To me, He has given His Infinite Mercy and it is in this ineffable mirror, that I contemplate His other divine attributes.   Therein all appear to me radiant with Love.   His Justice, even more perhaps than the rest, seems to me to be clothed with Love” (Ms A, 84r).

In these words she expresses herself in the last lines of The Story of a Soul:   “I have only to open the Holy Gospels and at once I breathe the perfume of Jesus’ life and then I know which way to run;  and it is not to the first place but to the last, that I hasten…. I feel that even had I on my conscience every crime one could commit… my heart broken with sorrow, I would throw myself into the arms of my Saviour Jesus, because I know that He loves the Prodigal Son” who returns to Him. (Ms C, 36v-37r).

“Trust and Love” are therefore the final point of the account of her life, two words, like beacons, that illumined the whole of her journey to holiness, to be able to guide others on the same “little way of trust and love”, of spiritual childhood (cf. Ms C, 2v-3r; LT 226).

Trust, like that of the child who abandons himself in God’s hands, inseparable from the strong, radical commitment of true love, which is the total gift of self for ever, as the Saint says, contemplating Mary:   “Loving is giving all, and giving oneself” (Why I love thee, Mary, P 54/22).

Thus Thérèse points out to us all that Christian life consists in living to the full the grace of Baptism in the total gift of self to the Love of the Father, in order to live like Christ, in the fire of the Holy Spirit, His same love for all the others.”…Pope Benedict XVI

REFLECTION – “Free your mind from all that troubles you; God will take care of things. You will be unable to make haste in this (choice) without, so to speak, grieving the heart of God because he sees that you do not honour Him sufficiently with holy trust. “We recognise a tree by its fruit
and we ought to be able to recognise
a Christian by his action.
The fruit of faith should be evident in our lives,
for being a Christian is more than making
sound professions of faith.
It should reveal itself in practical and visible ways.
Indeed it is better to keep quiet about our beliefs
and live them out,
than to talk eloquently about what we believe
but fail to live by it.”we recognise a tree by its fruit - st ignatius of antioch - speaking of living the light - no 2- 24 sept 2018

“Christianity is not a matter of persuading people of particular ideas

Let none of you be found a deserter.
Let your baptism endure as your arms;

your patience as a complete panoply.
Let your works be the charge assigned to you,
that you may receive a worthy recompense.
Be long-suffering, therefore, with one another,

One Minute Reflection – 3 August – Today’s Gospel: Matthew 13:54–58

One Minute Reflection – 3 August – Friday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time, Year B – Today’s Gospel: Matthew 13:54–58 and The Memorial of Bl Augustine Gazotich O.P. (1262-1323)

Is not this the carpenter’s son?…And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief....Matthew 13:55,58

REFLECTION – “For if I do not understand the nature placed at my service, I discern Your goodness from the mere fact that it is there to serve me.   I perceive that I do not even understand myself but I wonder at You all the more… You have given me intellect, life and human feeling, the source of so many joys, yet I do not begin to understand how I began to be…
So it is through failing to understand what surrounds me that I grasp what You are and it is through perceiving what You are that I come to adore You.   That is why, in what concerns Your mysteries, my incomprehension lessens not a bit my faith in Your omnipotence…  Your eternal Son’s birth exceeds even the idea of eternity; it is prior to the times everlasting. Before any other thing that exists, He was Son proceeding from You, O God and Father.   He is true God… You have never existed without Him…   Before ever time was, You are the eternal Father of Your Sole Begotten One.”…St Hilary (315-368) Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Churchis not this the carpenter's son - matthew 13 55,58 - st hilary - so it is through failing to understand - 3 aug 2018

PRAYER – “So long as I enjoy that breath of life granted to me by You, Holy Father, Almighty God, I will proclaim You as God eternal but also as Father eternal.   Never will I set myself up as judge of Your almighty power and mysteries;  never will I set my limited understanding before the true appreciation of Your infinity; never will I claim You to have existed beforehand without Your Wisdom, Power and Word, God the Only-Begotten, my Lord Jesus Christ.   For even though human language is weak and imperfect when it speaks of You, this will not inhibit my mind to the point of reducing my faith to silence for lack of words able to express the mystery of Your being…” (St Hilary)   Lord God, You hold out the light of Your Word to those who do not know You.    Strengthen in our hearts the faith You have given us, so that no trials may quench the fire Your Spirit kindled within us.   Grant that the prayers of Bl Augustine Gazotich, may assist us to grow in love. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.bl augustine gazotich - pray for us 3 aug 2018

Saint of the Day – 23 July – St John Cassian (c 360 – c 435)

Saint of the Day – 23 July – St John Cassian (c 360 – c 435) Priest, Monk, Theologian, Writer, Founder.   Also known as John the Ascetic, or John Cassian the Roman (Latin: Ioannes Eremita Cassianus, Ioannus Cassianus, or Ioannes Massiliensis), was a Christian monk and theologian celebrated in both the Western and Eastern Churches for his mystical writings.   St John Cassian is noted for his role in bringing the ideas and practices of Christian monasticism to the early medieval West.   He was born in c 360 in Scythia Minor (modern-day Dobrogea, Romania) and died in c 435 in Massilia, Gaul (modern-day Marseilles, France), of natural causes.

ST JOHN CASSIAN

Cassian was born around 360, most likely in the region of Scythia Minor (now Dobruja, a historical region shared today by Romania and Bulgaria), although some scholars assume a Gallic origin.   The son of wealthy parents, he received a good education: his writings show the influence of Cicero and Persius.   He was bilingual in Latin and Greek.

Cassian mentions having a sister in his first work, the Institutes, with whom he corresponded in his monastic life;  she may have ended up with him in Marseilles.

Around 380, John Cassian migrated from Romania to Bethlehem, where he embraced the monastic life.   After 385 he wandered the Egyptian desert, the heart of eastern monasticism.   He visited abbots at monasteries and hermits in their caves, absorbing their teachings about the Christian life.

The year 400 found him on the staff of St John Chrysostom in Constantinople.   When Chrysostom was unfairly deposed and exiled, Cassian was among his defenders who travelled to Rome to plead his case before the pope, who was Innocent I.   At that time he was ordained a priest.

While he was in Rome, Cassian accepted the invitation to found an Egyptian-style monastery in southern Gaul, near Marseilles.   He may also have spent time as a priest in Antioch between 404 and 415.   In any case, he arrived in Marseilles around 415.   His foundation, the Abbey of St Victor, was a complex of monasteries for both men and women, one of the first such institutes in the West and served as a model for later monastic development.JOHN CASSIAN

To instruct his monks and nuns, Cassian wrote two significant books. The Institutes described the eastern pattern of monastic life and the virtues required of monks. The Conferences presented the wisdom of the Egyptian desert in the form of discourses by famous abbots. In the following sample we hear “Abbot Isaac” on the practice of the presence of God:

“To keep the thought of God always in your mind you must cling totally to this formula for piety:  ‘Come to my help, O God. Lord, hurry to my rescue’ (see Psalm 70:2).

“With good reason this verse has been chosen from the whole of Scripture as a device.   It bears all the feelings that human nature can experience.

It can be adapted to every condition and deployed against every temptation.   It carries a cry to God in the face of every danger.   It piously confesses humility.   It conveys our sense of frailty, our assurance of being heard, our confidence in help that is always and everywhere present.   Someone forever calling out to his protector is very sure of his nearness.   This short verse is an indomitable wall for all those struggling against the onslaught of demons.

Whatever the disgust, the anguish, or the gloom in our thoughts, it keeps us from despairing of our salvation since it reveals to us the One to whom we call, the One who sees our struggles and who is never far from those who pray to him.

If things go well for us in spirit, this verse is a warning.   We must not get puffed up at being in a good condition that we cannot retain without the protection of God for whose continuous and speedy help it prays.

This little verse, I am saying, proves to be necessary and useful to each one of us in all circumstances.”

Cassian’s achievements and writings influenced Saint Benedict, who incorporated many of the principles into his monastic rule and recommended to his own monks that they read the works of Cassian.   Since Benedict’s rule is still followed by Benedictine, Cistercian and Trappist monks, John Cassian’s thought still exercises influence over the spiritual lives of thousands of men and women in the Latin Church.

The Church also ranks him as a saint, with a feast day on 23 July.   Like his contemporaries Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint John Chrysostom, he was never formally canonised, a process that came into use several centuries after his death.   Pope Urban V referred to him as sanctus (a saint) and he was included in the Gallican Martyrology.  He is included also in the Roman Martyrology with a feast-day on 23 July.  Like the great majority of recognised saints of the Church, he is not one of the saints in the General Roman Calendar, but the Archdiocese of Marseilles and some monastic orders celebrate his memorial on his feast day.

Cassian’s relics are kept in an underground chapel in the Monastery of St Victor in Marseilles.   His head and right hand are in the main church there.

Today laypeople cannot practice the presence of God with the constancy that Cassian demanded.   But we can frequently remind ourselves of God’s nearness and draw on his grace by praying “Come to my help, O God. Lord, hurry to my rescue.”st john cassian - largerJOHN CASSIAN 2

Thought for the Day – 20 July – The Memorial of Bl Gregory Lopez (1542-1596)

Thought for the Day – 20 July – The Memorial of Bl Gregory Lopez (1542-1596)

There are no patterns for sainthood and the Saints break all moulds.
God is interested in us, right where we are.   He has placed us there and our own particular circumstances are as good a place as any other to become a saint  . Holiness is within our reach!   Only He knows where our pathways will lead.   As Blessed Gregory and all our Saints show, it is about abandoning ourselves to Him and living our lives, where we are, in and for Him alone, keeping our eyes ever fixed on Christ  . Over the course of time, our prayer evolves from acceptance of God’s will to a conscious act of love of God, to a devotion to and imitation of the person of Jesus, the Logos.

His Biographer, Fr Francisco de Losa said:
“His soul appeared to be disengaged from all things else by a pure union with God.”

And as López said to him:  “It is much better to treat with God than with man….The eyes of the true man are always fixed on Christ, who is his head and the soul that is touched with love of God is like a needle that is touched with the lodestone always pointing to the North.”Blessed Gregory

An old print of this servant of God states in a few lines:

“The miser runs o’er sea and land
His riches to increase,
But Lopez, on the other hand,
For poverty and peace.”

Many miracles were ascribed to him in life and after death.   In February, 1620, the King of Spain ordered his Treatise on the Apocalypse published, adding, “I do not wish to lose a single moment in procuring the canonisation of this holy man, who,” as he says elsewhere, “passed thirty-three years in solitude in a marvellous penance, humility and love of God and his neighbour and had an admirable gift of prayer and understanding of the Holy Scriptures and the supernatural and human sciences, with the general approbation of the prelates and people of Mexico.”   In fact, in the examinations that took place, bishops and theologians of all the religious orders, bore unanimous testimony to his extraordinary virtue and progress in the science of the saints.

REFLECTION – “O my Saviour and my God!   This ought to astonish us.   We run after knowledge as if all our happiness depended on it.   Woe to us if we don’t have it!   We certainly need it but in its fullness, we ought to study but in moderation.   Other people claim understanding of business and pass for people of substance and negotiation in the world.   These are the ones from whom God takes away perception of Christian truths, from the learned and knowing of this world.   Who does He give it to, then?   To simple, ordinary people…   Gentlemen, true religion is to be found among the poor.   God enriches them with living faith, they believe, touch, taste the words of life… For the most part they preserve their peace in the midst of trouble and distress.   What is the reason for this?   Faith.   Why?   Because they are simple, God causes those graces to abound in them, that He refuses to the rich and learned of this world.”…St Vincent de Paul (1581-1660)you have hidden these things - matthew 11 25 - gentlemen, true religion - st vincent de paul - 18 july 2018

PRAYER – Lord God, in Your wisdom You created us, by Your Providence, You rule us. Penetrate our inmost being with Your holy light so that our way of life may always be one of faithful service and childlike trust in You.  Grant that by the intercession of St Frederick, we may always follow behind Your Son and grasp His hand, to lead us to You, Through Jesus Christ our Lord with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever, amen.st frederick pray for us - 18 july 2018

One Minute Reflection – 16 July – Today’s Gospel: Matthew 10:34-42,11:1.

One Minute Reflection – 16 July – Monday of the Fifteenth week in Ordinary Time, B – Today’s Gospel: Matthew 10:34-42,11:1.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me...Matthew 10:37-38

REFLECTION – “A further means of staying faithful, Daughters, is perfect detachment from father, mother, relations and friends in such a way that you are God’s alone.   And to possess this great good you have to strip yourself of everything and have nothing of your own.   The apostles had just such a detachment.   For one cent you will have a hundred, as many women, as many mothers which Providence, Daughters, will never fail you.   Don’t you have any courage at all to give yourselves to the God who is so mindful of you?   Never claim you are saving something for your own livelihood; always put your trust in Providence.   Rich people can fall into need through the accidents that often happen but they will never be in want, who intend to rely solely on God.
Isn’t it good, Daughters, to live like this?   What is there to fear?   For God has promised that people who care for the poor will never lack anything.   O my Daughters, would you not love God’s promises better than the world’s deceits?   God is obliged to provide for all our needs.”…St Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) – Conferences to the Daughters of Charitymatthew 10 - 37 - 38 - whoever loves father and mother more than me - providence, daughters, will never fail you. st vincent de paul - 16 july 2018

PRAYER – Grant us Your Grace O Holy God almighty, rule over our hearts and bodies this day.   Sanctify us and guide our every thought, word and deed according to the commandments of Your divine Son, so that now and forever Your Grace may free us from the world and save us for Yourself.   “May the Virgin Mary, first disciple and missionary of the Word of God, help us to take the message of the Gospel to the world, in humble and radiant exultance, beyond every rejection, incomprehension or tribulation. Amen”… Pope Francisblessed virgin mary - first missionary - pray for us - 16 july 2018

Quote/s of the Day – 9 July – The Memorial of Blessed Adrian Fortescue T.O.S.D. (1476-1539) Martyr

Quote/s of the Day – 9 July – The Memorial of Blessed Adrian Fortescue T.O.S.D. (1476-1539) Martyr

“In Husbands Bosworth Hall, the residence of Miss Fortescue-Turville, the last direct descendant of the blessed martyr, was found some years ago a very precious relic, being nothing less than the Book of Hours which he habitually used.
The manuscript has suffered a good deal from time and careless handling but on the outer leaf can still be read another series of maxims, a kind of rule of life written and signed by the martyr’s own hand.   It will be seen how, while yet in the days of his prosperity, this truly Christian knight was preparing all unconsciously for the martyr’s crown and palm.
The Book of Hours is now reverently preserved as a relic in the beautiful little Catholic church adjoining the old hall of Husbands Bosworth :”
