Sunday Reflection – 28 July – Become the bread of Christ

Sunday Reflection – 28 July – Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Luke 11:1–13

Become the bread of Christ
St Bernard (1090-1153) Doctor of the Church

Saint Bernard teaches that it is not enough for us to take and eat the Bread from Heaven.
We must also offer ourselves to be eaten.
Holy Communion is a wondrous exchange in which we become the bread of Christ.
Listen to Saint Bernard:

“My penitence, my salvation are His food.
I myself am His food.
I am chewed. as I am reproved by Him;
I am swallowed by Him. as I am taught;
I am digested by Him. as I am changed;
I am assimilated. as I am transformed;
I am made one with Him, as I am conformed to Him.
He feeds upon us and is fed by us,
that we may be the more loosely bound to Him.”

christ-eats-me-st-bernard-29-july-2018 and 28 july 2018.jpg

Saint Bernard, ever the poet, uses images of eating and assimilation to describe how Christ unites us to Himself.
Our Lord becomes our food that we might become His.
We need the language of poets and preachers in our approach to the Eucharist.

Saint Bernard says, “Christ eats me that He may have me in Himself and Christ, in turn, is eaten by me, that He may be in me and the bond between us, will be strong and the union complete.”

What awaits you in Holy Communion exceeds all that you can desire.   Eat, then and offer yourself to be eaten.   Receive the Bread of God and become the bread of God.

Quote of the Day – 14 April – “…You yourselves will be His praise.”

Quote of the Day – 14 April – Palm Sunday, Year C

“It is there, on Calvary, that Jesus has His final appointment with a sinner,
to throw open the gates of His Kingdom for him too.
This is interesting, it is the only time that the word “Paradise”
appears in the Gospels.
Jesus promises it to a “poor devil” who, on the wood of the cross,
had the courage to proffer Him the most humble of requests:
“Remember me when you have entered your kingdom” (cf. Lk 23:42).
He had no good works to assert,
he had nothing but he entrusted himself to Jesus,
whom he recognised as innocent, good, so different from himself.
Those words of humble remorse were enough to touch Jesus’ heart.
The good thief reminds us of our true condition before God-
that we are His children, that He feels compassion for us,
that He is defenceless each time
we show our nostalgia for His love.”

Pope Francis

General Audience, 25 October 2017it is there on calvary tht Jesus has his final appointment with a sinner - pope francis palm sunday 14 april 2019.jpg

My dear brothers and sons, fruit of the true faith and holy seed of heaven, all you who have been born again in Christ and whose life is from above, listen to me, or rather, listen to the Holy Spirit saying through me:   Sing to the Lord a new song.   Look, you tell me, I am singing.   Yes indeed, you are singing, you are singing clearly, I can hear you.   But make sure that your life does not contradict your words.   Sing with your voices, your hearts, your lips and your lives – Sing to the Lord a new song’.

Now it is your unquestioned desire to sing of Him whom you love but you ask me how to sing His praises.   You have heard the words – Sing to the Lord a new song and you wish to know what praises to sing.   The answer is – His praise is in the assembly of the saints – it is in the singers themselves.   If you desire to praise Him, then live what you express.   Live good lives and you yourselves will be His praise.

Prayer in Praise of Christ

Born as a son,
led forth as a lamb,
sacrificed as a sheep,
buried as a man,
He rose from the dead as a God,
for He was by nature God and man.

He is all things:
He judges and so He is Law,
He teaches and so He is Wisdom,
He saves and so He is Grace,
He begets and so He is Father,
He is begotten and so He is Son,
He suffers and so He is Sacrifice,
He is buried and so He is man,
He rises again and so He is God.
This is Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs glory for all ages.born as a son led forth as a lamb no 2 st melito 1 april 2019.jpg

“The Lord, though He was God, became man.   He suffered for the sake of whose who suffer, He was bound for those in bonds, condemned for the guilty, buried for those who lie in the grave but He rose from the dead and cried aloud:  “Who will contend with me?  Let him confront me.”   I have freed the condemned, brought the dead back to life, raised men from their graves.   Who has anything to say against me?   I, He said, am the Christ,  I have destroyed death, triumphed over the enemy, trampled hell underfoot, bound the strong one and taken men up to the heights of heaven.   I am the Christ.   Come, then, all you nations of men, receive forgiveness for the sins that defile you.   I am your forgiveness.   I am the Passover that brings salvation.   I am the lamb who was immolated for you.   I am your Ransom, your Life, your Resurrection, your Light, I am your Salvation and your King.   I will bring you to the heights of heaven.   With my own right hand I will raise you up and I will show you the eternal Father.”

“The Church of the Lord is built upon the rock
of the apostles among so many dangers in the world;
it therefore remains unmoved.
The Church’s foundation is unshakeable and firm
against assaults of the raging sea.
Waves lash at the Church but do not shatter it.
Although the elements of this world, constantly beat
upon the Church with crashing sounds,
the Church possesses the safest harbour
of salvation for all in distress.”

Thought for the Day – 25 November – The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Jesus Christ

You have heard Him spoken of, indeed the greater part of you are already His – you are Christians.

So, to you Christians I repeat His name, to everyone I proclaim Him –

Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end,

the Alpha and the Omega.

He is the king of the new world.

He is the secret of history.

He is the key to our destiny

St Pope Paul VI (1897-1978)

Homily delivered in Manila, 29 November 1970so to you christians i repeat his name - st popepaul VI - no 2- 25 nov christ the king 2018

“Follow Me. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Without the Way, there is no going.
Without the Truth, there is no knowing.
Without the Life, there is no living.
I am the Way, which you must follow,
the Truth, which you must believe,
the Life, for which you must hope.
I am the inviolable Way,
the infallible Truth,
the unending Life.
I am the Way that is straight,
the supreme Truth,
the Life that is true,
the blessed, the uncreated Life.
If you abide in My Way, you shall know the Truth
and the Truth shall make you free
and you shall attain life everlasting.”

“Hers was the happiness of first bearing in her womb
Him whom she would obey as her master.”

St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctor of the Churchhers was the happiness - st augustine 25 nov - christ the king 2018

“The kingdom of God, in the words of our Lord and Saviour,
does not come for all to see; nor shall they say:
Behold, here it is, or behold, there it is;
but the kingdom of God is within us,
for the word of God is very near, in our mouth and in our heart.
Thus it is clear that he who prays for the coming of God’s kingdom,
prays rightly to have it within himself,
that there it might grow and bear fruit and become perfect.
For God reigns in each of his holy ones.
Anyone who is holy obeys the spiritual laws of God,
who dwells in Him as in a well-ordered city.
The Father is present in the perfect soul
and with Him Christ reigns, according to the words:
We shall come to him and make our home with him.”but the kingdom of god is within us - origen - 25 nov christ the king 2018

“The kingdom of God cannot exist alongside the reign of sin.
Therefore, if we wish God to reign in us,
in no way should sin reign in our mortal body;
rather we should mortify our members which are upon the earth
and bear fruit in the Spirit.
There should be in us a kind of spiritual paradise where God may walk
and be our sole ruler with His Christ.
In us the Lord will sit at the right hand of that spiritual power
which we wish to receive.
And He will sit there until all His enemies,
who are within u,. become His footstool
and every principality, power and virtue in us is cast out.”

One Minute Reflection – 25 November – The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

One Minute Reflection – 25 November – Today’s Gospel: John 18:33–37 – The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

“You say that I am a king.   For this I was born and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth.   Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”...John 18:37

REFLECTION – “But what is the “truth” that Christ came into the world to witness to?   The whole of His life reveals that God is love – so this is the truth to which He witnessed to the full, with the sacrifice of His own life on Calvary.
The Cross is the “throne” where He manifested His sublime kingship as God Love, by offering Himself in expiation for the sin of the world, He defeated the “ruler of this world” (Jn 12: 31) and established the Kingdom of God once and for all.   It is a Kingdom that will be fully revealed at the end of time, after the destruction of every enemy and last of all, death (cf. I Cor 15: 25-26).   The Son will then deliver the Kingdom to the Father and God will finally be “everything to everyone” (I Cor 15: 28).
The way to reach this goal is long and admits of no short cut, indeed, every person must freely accept the truth of God’s love.   He is Love and Truth and neither Love nor Truth are ever imposed, they come knocking at the doors of the heart and the mind and where they can enter they bring peace and joy.   This is how God reigns, this is His project of salvation, a “mystery” in the biblical sense of the word, a plan that is gradually revealed in history.”….Pope Benedict XVI 26 November 2006john 18 37 - for this i was born - but what is this truth - pope benedict - 25 nov 2018 - christ the king

“When did Jesus reveal Himself as king?   In the event of the Cross!   Those who look at the Cross cannot but see the astonishing gratuitousness of love.   One of you could say, “Father, that was a failure!”.   It is precisely in the failure of sin — sin is a failure — in the failure of human ambitions – the triumph of the Cross is there, the gratuitousness of love is there.   In the failure of the Cross, love is seen, a love that is gratuitous, which Jesus gives us.”…Pope Francis – Angelus, 22 November 2015when did jesus reveal himself as king - pope francis - 25 nov 2018 christ the king no 2

A Prayer to Christ the King

O Jesus Christ,
I acknowledge You as universal King.
All that has been made,
has been created for You.
Exercise all Your rights over me.
I renew my Baptismal Vows.
I renounce Satan, his pomps and his works,
I promise to live as a good Christian.
And, in particular do I pledge myself to labour,
to the best of my ability,
for the triumph of the rights of God
and of Your Church.
Divine Heart of Jesus,
to You do I offer my poor services,
labouring that all hearts
may acknowledge Your sacred kingship
and that thus, the reign of Your peace,
be established throughout the whole universe.

25 November – The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

The political context in which Pope Pius XI, by the Encyclical Quas Primas, established the feast of Christ the King in 1925, was the still unresolved Roman Question, which concerned the papacy and the kingdom of Italy regarding the temporal authority of the popes and the Papal States.   For those of us who have grown up with the separation of church and state, the Papal States are a distant historical oddity.christ the king 3

Yet even if these political issues no longer resonate for us today, Quas Primas commemorated these same issues and problems by taking the view that marks the Church off as a unique society, one that is eternal, whose King’s authority transcends all political divisions and historical epochs.   The Church exists in the messiness of history and responds to events that emerge from that same messiness but claims a King who transcends it all.

Already in the book of Daniel and in earlier prophetic books, the hope for the true king, the one who would establish God’s kingdom, emerged in the language and imagery of ancient Near Eastern myth, when the prophet sees “I saw in the night visions and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man.”   While scholars dispute the identification of the son of man as the messiah in Daniel, the earliest Christians understood that the one to whom “was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

When would this King of all peoples, nations and languages arrive?   When would God’s kingdom, the everlasting dominion, be established?   The book of Revelation, written in opposition to the Caesars of Rome and their empire, declared that Jesus was already “the ruler of kings on earth” who “made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever.”   And Revelation promised, evoking the language of Daniel, that Jesus’ first coming will be followed by a second coming with the clouds when “every eye will see him, every one who pierced him; and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him.”Christ King header

Even Jesus’ disciples, though, who followed Him faithfully if unsurely to Jerusalem, must have wondered about the answer when they heard the Roman procurator Pilate, ask their teacher, “Are you the King of the Jews?”   Jesus answered, “My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world.”   It is a true answer, of course but also elusive, for though Jesus’ kingdom is “not from this world” and does not involve peach treaties, concordats, armies and diplomatic corps, it includes all of this world and all that is in it.

It is a point Pope Pius XI makes in Quas Primas (13), citing St Cyril of Alexandria, who wrote that “Christ has dominion over all creatures …by essence and by nature.”   Pope Pius XI also writes that though Jesus’ kingship is founded upon the ineffable hypostatic union, “Christ is also our King by acquired, as well as by natural right, for He is our Redeemer.” Jesus’ kingship is unlike any other by nature and by behaviour.CHRIST THE KING 6

But there is another consideration as to why Jesus declared that His kingdom was ‘not from this world’.   Pope Pius XI states that all people can enter “this kingdom, whoever they are and from wherever they are, since “this kingdom is opposed to none other than to that of Satan and to the power of darkness” (18).   This kingdom welcomes all kingdoms and all peoples.

If we see only the messiness of history and politics, we are missing the true story of eternity and the true King of all, who is already “the ruler of the kings of the earth.” I  f we believe it to be true, we must never despair of the politics of our age, for He came as King, is now King and is coming again in glory as King!christ the king lg

Our Morning Offering – 26 November – The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

From the Psalter Hymn or Prayer to Christ our King

Alone with none but Thee, my God,
I journey on my way.
What need I fear, when Thou art near,
O King of night and day?
More safe am I within Thy hand,
than if a host did round me stand.

My destined time is fixed by Thee
and death doth know his hour.
Did warriors strong around me throng,
they could not stay His power.
No walls of stone can man defend,
when Thou Thy messenger dost send.

My life I yield to Thy decree
and bow to Thy control.
In peaceful calm, for from Thine arm,
no power can wrest my soul.
Could earthly omens e’er appal,
a man that heeds the heavenly call!

The child of God, can fear no ill,
His chosen dread no foe,
we leave our fate with Thee and wait,
Thy bidding when to go.
‘Tis not from chance our comfort springs,
Thou art our trust, O King of kings!Prayer - christ the king - from the Psalter - 26 Nov 2017

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe – the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year – 26 November

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe – the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year – 26 November formerly referred to as “Christ the King,” was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man’s thinking and living and organises his life as if God did not exist.  The feast is intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ’s royalty over individuals, families, society, governments and nations.ff190a6cadbf4d81c14d78f994f2fc14--catholic-prayers-roman-catholicsolemnity of christ the king.info

Today’s Mass establishes the titles for Christ’s royalty over men:  1) Christ is God, the Creator of the universe and hence wields a supreme power over all things – “All things were created by Him”;   2) Christ is our Redeemer, He purchased us by His precious Blood and made us His property and possession;  3) Christ is Head of the Church, “holding in all things the primacy”;  4) God bestowed upon Christ the nations of the world as His special possession and dominion.

Today’s Mass also describes the qualities of Christ’s kingdom.   This kingdom is:  1) supreme, extending not only to all people but also to their princes and kings;  2) universal, extending to all nations and to all places;  3) eternal, for “The Lord shall sit a King forever”;  4) spiritual, Christ’s “kingdom is not of this world.” christ the king 6.

Christ the King as Represented in the Liturgy
The liturgy is an album in which every epoch of Church history immortalises itself. Therein, accordingly, can be found the various pictures of Christ beloved during succeeding centuries.   In its pages we see pictures of Jesus suffering and in agony; we see pictures of His Sacred Heart;  yet these pictures are not proper to the nature of the liturgy as such;  they resemble baroque altars in a gothic church.   Classic liturgy knows but one Christ:  the King, radiant, majestic, and divine.

With an ever-growing desire, all Advent awaits the “coming King”;  in the chants of the breviary we find repeated again and again the two expressions “King” and “is coming.” On Christmas the Church would greet, not the Child of Bethlehem, but the Rex Pacificus — “the King of peace gloriously reigning.”   Within a fortnight, there follows a feast which belongs to the greatest of the feasts of the Church year — the Epiphany.   As in ancient times oriental monarchs visited their principalities (theophany), so the divine King appears in His city, the Church;  from its sacred precincts He casts His glance over all the world….On the final feast of the Christmas cycle, the Presentation in the Temple, holy Church meets her royal Bridegroom with virginal love:  “Adorn your bridal chamber, O Sion and receive Christ your King!”   The burden of the Christmas cycle may be summed up in these words:  Christ the King establishes His Kingdom of light upon earth!

If we now consider the Easter cycle, the lustre of Christ’s royal dignity is indeed somewhat veiled by His sufferings;  nevertheless, it is not the suffering Jesus who is present to the eyes of the Church as much as Christ the royal Hero and Warrior who upon the battlefield of Golgotha struggles with the mighty and dies in triumph.   Even during Lent and Passiontide the Church acclaims her King.   The act of homage on Palm Sunday is intensely stirring;  singing psalms in festal procession we accompany our Savior singing:  Gloria, laus et honor tibi sit, Rex Christe, “Glory, praise and honour be to Thee, Christ, O King!”   It is true that on Good Friday the Church meditates upon the Man of Sorrows in agony upon the Cross but at the same time, and perhaps more so, she beholds Him as King upon a royal throne.   The hymn Vexilla Regis, “The royal banners forward go,” is the more perfect expression of the spirit from which the Good Friday liturgy has arisen.   Also characteristic is the verse from Psalm 95, Dicite in gentibus quia Dominus regnavit, to which the early Christians always added, a ligno, “Proclaim among the Gentiles:  the Lord reigns from upon the tree of the Cross!”   During Paschal time the Church is so occupied with her glorified Saviour and Conqueror that kingship references become rarer;  nevertheless, toward the end of the season we celebrate our King’s triumph after completing the work of redemption, His royal enthronement on Ascension Thursday.

Neither in the time after Pentecost is the picture of Christ as King wholly absent from the liturgy.   Corpus Christi is a royal festival: “Christ the King who rules the nations, come, let us adore” (Invit.).   In the Greek Church the feast of the Transfiguration is the principal solemnity in honour of Christ’s kingship, Summum Regem gloriae Christum adoremus (Invit.).   Finally at the sunset of the ecclesiastical year, the Church awaits with burning desire the return of the King of Majesty.

We will overlook further considerations in favour of a glance at the daily Offices.   How often do we not begin Matins with an act of royal homage:  “The King of apostles, of martyrs, of confessors, of virgins — come, let us adore” (Invit.).   Lauds is often introduced with Dominus regnavit, “The Lord is King”.   Christ as King is also a first consideration at the threshold of each day;  for morning after morning we renew our oath of fidelity at Prime:  “To the King of ages be honour and glory.”   Every oration is concluded through our Mediator Christ Jesus “who lives and reigns forever.”   Yes, age-old liturgy beholds Christ reigning as King in His basilica (etym.: “the king’s house”), upon the altar as His throne.

Day Nine
Lord, Thy Kingdom Come

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

1 Corinthians 15:24
Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.

«Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!».   I am sent by Him, by Christ Himself, to do this. I am an apostle, I am a witness.   The more distant the goal, the more difficult my mission the more pressing is the love that urges me to it.   I must bear witness to His name:  Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. . . . I could never finish speaking about him: he is the light and the truth; indeed, He is  “the way, the truth and the life”.   He is the bread and the spring of living water to satisfy our hunger and our thirst.
Jesus Christ:  You have heard Him spoken of;  indeed the greater part of you are already His:   you are Christians.   So, to you Christians I repeat His name, to everyone I proclaim Him:  Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega;   He is the king of the new world;  He is the secret of history;   He is the key to our destiny…St Pope Paul VI, Homily delivered in Manila, 29 November 1970

Prayer:  God, Father of Mercy!   You, who ceaselessly reaches out to Man, who has lost the path leading him back to You, the Only Lord and Father of all children, may You give him the light to find the path to You. Jesus Christ, Our Lord and King, hath revealed that His Divine Heart is Man’s only secure shelter.   Our Lord and King, we yearn for You and the Virgin Mary to reign in our hearts, in our nation and state. Jesus, through the intercession of Your Mother we implore You, may we come to believe that proclaiming You the Lord and King, will bring only good things.
King full of mercy accept us gathered here as Your subjects.
May You also receive our homage, worship, fidelity and the act of consecration to the King of the Universe.
Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, may you lead us to the complete acceptance and
proclamation of your Son as Lord and King, so that we may realise that the Kingdom of God is true happiness and fulfilment in the earthly life. Amen.

Prayer to Jesus Christ King of the Universe
by Adam Stefan Cardinal Sapieha (1927)

O Jesus, Lord of our hearts and immortal King of centuries, we hereby solemnly swear to You to stand faithfully by Your throne and by You. We swear never to blemish Your standard with unbelief, sectarianism or any other apostasy. We vow to You to persevere in the holy Catholic faith until we die.
May our posterity engrave it on our tombstones that we were never embarrassed because of our faith in You, Jesus the King and Your Gospel.   May You reign in our hearts through grace.   May You reign in our families through family virtues.   May You reign in our schools through genuine Catholic upbringing.
May You reign in our society through justice and concord.   May You reign everywhere, always and forever.   May Your standard be a guide for us all, may Your Kingdom extend to every corner of the earth!  Amen

Let us pray:   Almighty God, the powerful King of all creation, we humbly beseech You to send the hosts of angels for our protection so that we may serve You with devotion, with no hindrance and in peace.   We beseech You through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Day Eight
With the Followers of Christ

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Hebrew 7:26
It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens.

The priest always and in an unchangeable way, finds the source of his identity in Christ the Priest.   It is not the world which determines his status, as though it depended on changing needs or ideas about social roles.   The priest is marked with the seal of the Priesthood of Christ, in order to share in His function as the one Mediator and Redeemer.
So, because of this fundamental bond, there opens before the priest the immense field of the service of souls, for their salvation in Christ and in the Church.   This service must be completely inspired by love of souls in imitation of Christ, who gives His life for them.   It is God’s wish that all people should be saved and that none of the little ones should be lost.  “The priest must always be ready to respond to the needs of souls,” said the Curé of Ars. “He is not for Himself, He is for you.”
The priest is for the laity:  he animates them and supports them in the exercise of the common-priesthood of the baptised — so well illustrated by the Second Vatican Council — which consists in their making their fives a spiritual offering, in witnessing to the Christian spirit in the family, in taking charge of the temporal sphere and sharing in the evangelisation of their brethren.   But the service of the priest belongs to another order.
He is ordained to act in the name of Christ the Head, to bring people into the new life made accessible by Christ, to dispense to them the mysteries . . . St Pope John Paul II, Letter to priests for Holy Thursday in 1986, 10

Prayer:   God, King of heaven and earth! Jesus Christ hath established the sacred priesthood to enable spiritual sacrifice, for the greater honour and glory of Your Name and for the Redemption of all believers.   We come to You with great reverence and humility and, learning to love like Jesus, Our Lord and King, we commend to You, O Lord, all those whom He loved until the end.   O Christ, we implore You to behold Your chosen ones today in Your mercy.   It is them who guide souls to Salvation;  may You show Your love to them and grant them the light of the Holy Spirit.   Fortify them by Your power,
support them through the fidelity of their congregations and protect them from all evil. You who lives and reigns world without end. Amen

Day Seven
Following the Saints

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

1 Peter 1:15-16
. . . but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, “Be holy because I (am) holy.

By their eloquent and attractive example of a life completely transfigured by the splendour of moral truth, the martyrs and, in general, all the Church’s Saints, light up every period of history by reawakening its moral sense.   By witnessing fully to the good, they are a living reproof to those who transgress the law (cf. Wis 2:12) and they make the words of the Prophet echo ever afresh: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Is 5:20)… St Pope John Paul II, The Encyclical Veritatis Splendor, 93

Prayer:  God, Father of all grace! In Your Saints You ceaselessly show us Your immeasurable kindness and Your care over the whole Church.   Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and King, You teach the saints the path to perfection and lettest them taste in this life the sweet fruit of Redemption.   May You give us strength so that we have courage to follow the way to sainthood, fortified by the example of all Your saints.
Jesus Christ, who takes joy in every soul that yearns to love You more than the world and one’s own life.   Lord and King, You wish to reign in the hearts of the
righteous and the honest, the poor and the humble, the suffering and the scorned, through the intercession of Your Servants, the Saints, be mindful of their souls and make them the kingdom of Your love, peace and truth.   May all the hearts cold and indifferent to the reverence and adoration of the Celestial Father be enkindled with love for Him. You who lives and reigns world without end.  Amen.

Day Six
Contemplating the Holy Family

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Luke 2:51
He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

“Loving the family means being able to appreciate its values and capabilities, fostering them always.   Loving the family means identifying the dangers and the evils that menace it, in order to overcome them.   Loving the family means endeavouring to create for it an environment favourable for its development.   The modern Christian family is often tempted to be discouraged and is distressed at the growth of its difficulties;  it is an eminent form of love to give it back its reasons for confidence in itself, in the riches that it possesses by nature and grace, and in the mission that God has entrusted to it. “Yes indeed, the families of today must be called back to their original position.   They must follow Christ.”... St Pope John Paul II, The Adhortation Familiaris Consortio, 86

Prayer:  God, Father of mankind! You who came into this world through a family and showed it to us as a visible sign of love, mutual respect and kindness, let us learn to love anew, over and over again and find a way to happiness through contemplating the ideal of the Holy Family of Nazareth.   Jesus, who hast sanctified family life through Your Incarnation, to You we entrust every family, both such that lives separated from genuine happiness and such that enjoys the Divine gift of grace.
True happiness consists in a faithful fulfilment of the Divine will and the Nazarethan atmosphere of warmth and modesty.   Watch over all Catholic families on, give them Your blessing and let them find the true values that constitute and unite the family and are a way to find Your peace. Amen

Day Five
Under the Patronage of Saint Joseph

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Matthew 1:20
. . . the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.

The total sacrifice, whereby Joseph surrendered his whole existence to the demands of the Messiah’s coming into his home, becomes understandable only in the light of his profound interior life.   It was from this interior life that “very singular commands and consolations came, bringing him also the logic and strength that belong to simple and clear souls and giving him the power of making great decisions-such as the decision to put his liberty immediately at the disposition of the divine designs, to make over to them also his legitimate human calling, his conjugal happiness, to accept the conditions, the responsibility and the burden of a family but, through an incomparable virginal love, to renounce that natural conjugal love that is the foundation and nourishment of the
family.   This submission to God, this readiness of will to dedicate oneself to all that serves Him, is really nothing less than that exercise of devotion which constitutes one expression of the virtue of religionSt Pope John Paul II, The Adhortation Redemptoris custos, 26

Prayer: God of unfathomable kindness, who continuously summonS every person to a life of sainthood.   You have summoned Saint Joseph to accept the role and duties of the Guardian of Jesus Christ, Your Son.   Lend us Your help so that we may see in Saint Joseph a paragon of Christian virtues following His example of fidelity, justice, assuming a humble role and abandoning one’s own aspirations.
Saint Joseph, be mindful of all souls longing to bear unconditional love to Lord Jesus
and His Mother.   May we receive streams of graces through your intercession, so that we may guard the purity of our souls like a treasure to make them a worthy dwelling place for God.   Saint Joseph, protect our children and youth from all impurity that destroys Divine life in their souls.   We implore you to intercede before God on our behalf so that we may, within our powers and cooperating with Christ’s grace, extend the Divine Kingdom on earth.

Day Four
Behold, your mother

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

John 19:26-27
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother,
“Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

For the Mother of Christ is glorified as “Queen of the Universe.”   She who at the Annunciation called herself the “handmaid of the Lord” remained throughout her earthly life faithful to what this name expresses.   In this she confirmed that she was a true “disciple” of Christ, who strongly emphasised that his mission was one of service:  the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt. 20:28).   In this way Mary became the first of those who, “serving Christ also in others, with humility and patience lead their brothers and sisters to that King whom to serve is to reign” and she fully obtained that “state of royal freedom” proper to Christ’s disciples:  to serve means to reign!…(St Pope John Paul II, The Encyclical Redemptoris Mater, 41)

Prayer:  O God, whose sainthood is beyond understanding! Through Your Son Jesus Christ You have given us the paragon of sainthood and the path thereto.   You have involved the Blessed Virgin Mary in the mission of Salvation by making her Christ’s Mother and ours.   May You help us to see and believe that Virgin Mary is, for us, the model of ideal love. May our existence be permeated with the longing to bear love to Jesus and Mary. Mother of Divine Love, be mindful of the faithful gathered in this
temple and all other places where You are glorified and addressed in the world full of misery.    Be mindful of our souls longing to bear indivisible love to your Son and thee. Be mindful of all souls, especially the souls loving your Son, teach them to fulfil His will as faithfully as possible, protect them from all sin and help them to attain perfect love in humility, simplicity and complete devotion to God.   Through Christ, Our Lord, with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Day Three
Fortified by the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Romans 8:26
In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness;  for we do not know how to pray as we ought but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.

The breath of the divine life, the Holy Spirit, in its simplest and most common manner, expresses itself and makes itself felt in prayer.   It is a beautiful and salutary thought that, wherever people are praying in the world, there the Holy Spirit is, the living breath of prayer.   It is a beautiful and salutary thought to recognise that, if prayer is offered throughout the world, in the past, in the present and in the future, equally widespread is the presence and action of the Holy Spirit, who “breathes” prayer in the heart of man in all the endless range of the most varied situations and conditions, sometimes favourable and sometimes unfavourable to the spiritual and religious life.   Many times, through the influence of the Spirit, prayer rises from the human heart in spite of prohibitions
and persecutions and even official proclamations regarding the non-religious or even atheistic character of public life…(John Paul II, The Encyclical Dominum et vivificantem, 65)

Prayer
O God, the source of life and the giver of all graces!   You who renews and sanctifies
everything through the power of the Holy Spirit. Lord, be mindful of Your Church, wishing to renew ceaselessly through His Power.   Make our hearts open to His mysterious working.   Jesus Christ, who has opened for us the path to Heaven through the mystery of Redemption, be mindful of all who wish to renew the face of the earth through contribution and sacrifice.   Lord, send forth Your Spirit, to turn all our intentions, longings and decisions towards the service of God and the glory of Your Kingdom.   Amen

Day Two
Through Jesus Christ and in Him

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Hebrew 1:1-2a
In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets;  in these last days, he spoke to us through a son . . .

Jesus is frequently ignored and ridiculed, is announced to have been a king of the past and not to be the king of the present, let alone of tomorrow, is pushed into the junk room of issues and personages that should not be mentioned aloud and publicly…(Benedict XVI, address during the encounter with young people at Błonia Field in Cracow, 27 May 2006)

PRAYER – God, the Father of all mercy and solace, the kindest Lord and King!   You haVE sent Your only Son to make the world believe that You arE its only love, happiness and meaning of existence.   Our Lord is not only the Redeemer but that He also loves
every soul and hath shed His Blood for everyone.    May Your Kingdom arrive sooner in the souls of those who are paying this homage to You today;  in our families, parishes and the entire Nation.   You who livest and reigns world without end. Amen.

He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come”.
“Jesus of Nazareth, Son of Man, born of the Holy Virgin, came to reveal the fatherhood of God to mankind.   He came to reveal the fatherhood that only he himself knows as the Son who is of one substance with the Father.   So he came to lead mankind into the eternal and Divine dimension of all fatherhood and parenthood in the world created by God.   Also, of all order and harmony, for which the family dimension is essential.
Does to reveal mean only to remind?   More than that, to reveal means to restore. Christ came torestore the Divine fatherhood to mankind, this great human family. Only He could accomplish the restoration in a complete way.   In order to restore the Divine fatherhood to people, Christ had to bring back the people to God as Father.   This was his vital mission…”….(John Paul II, Homily delivered during the Mass at Masłów Aero Club in Kielce, 3 June 1991)

God, Father of mankind, we thank You for making us Your adopted children in Christ and letting us know about this great honour.   You have revealed that being a child of God means essentially acting with truth and simplicity, without a touch of duplicity and egoism.   Jesus Christ, our King and Lord, let all people know the kindness of God, Father of all creation and His care of those who fear Him.   Let us worship and praise the name of our King so that we may be brought to the glory of eternal life, where You live and reign, world without end. Amen

Amen

Let us pray. Almighty God, the powerful King of all creation, we humbly beseech You to send the hosts of angels for our protection so that we may serve You with devotion, with no hindrance and in peace.   We beseech You through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Announcing a Novena in Preparation for the Solemnity of Christ the King – 26 November 2017

Announcing a Novena in Preparation for the Solemnity of Christ the King – 26 November 2017

Let us enter into Nine days of prayer which will focus on Jesus as the Universal King.  The Roman Catholic Church sets aside the last Sunday of the liturgical year as the Feast of Christ the King, this year 2017, the Feast is on 26 November.

The Feast of Christ the King is, as Catholic feasts go, a relatively recent one.  It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, to remind Catholics (and the world generally) that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Universe, both as God and as Man.   Pius XI announced the feast in his encyclical Quas Primas, which was delivered on 11 December 1925.   At the end of the encyclical, he declared that he expected three “blessings” to flow from the celebration of the feast:   first, that “men will doubtless be reminded that the Church, founded by Christ as a perfect society, has a natural and inalienable right to perfect freedom and immunity from the power of the state”;   second, that “Nations will be reminded by the annual celebration of this feast that not only private individuals but also rulers and princes are bound to give public honour and obedience to Christ”;   and third, that “The faithful, moreover, by meditating upon these truths, will gain much strength and courage, enabling them to form their lives after the true Christian ideal.”
