One Minute Reflection โ€“ 27 February – Love your enemies – Matthew 5:43-48

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 27 February – Saturday of the First week of Lent, Readings:Deuteronomy 26:16-19Psalms 119:1-24-5,7-8Matthew 5:43-48 and The Memorial of St Gabriel Francis Possenti of Our Lady of Sorrows (1838-1862)

โ€œBut I say to you, love your enemiesโ€ – Matthew 5:44

REFLECTION – โ€œOne of you will say: โ€œIโ€™m not able to love my enemies at all.โ€ All through Holy Scripture God has said to you that you can and do you answer Him that, to the contrary, you canโ€™t? Now think about it – who are we to believe? God or you? Since He who is Truth itself cannot lie, let human weakness leave off its futile excuses forthwith! He who is just, cannot demand something impossible and He who is merciful, will not condemn someone for something that person could not avoid. So why these evasions then? There is no-one who knows better, what we are capable of, than He who has given us the ability. Such numbers of men, women, children, tender young girls, have borne flames, fire, sword and the wild beasts for Christโ€™s sake, without flinching and we, do we say that we cannot bear the insults of unintelligent persons?โ€ฆ

Indeed, if only the good are to be loved, what are we to say of the action of our God, of whom it is written: โ€œGod so loved the world that he gave his only Son?โ€ (Jn 3,16). For what good deeds are they, that the world had done, for God to love it so? Christ our Lord, found us all to be not only evil but even dead, on account of original sin and yetโ€ฆ โ€œhe loved us and handed himself over for usโ€ (Eph 5,2). In so acting He loved even those who did not love Him, as the Apostle Paul also says: โ€œChrist died for the guiltyโ€ (Rm 5,6). And in his inexpressible mercy, He gave this example to all humankind, saying: โ€œLearn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heartโ€ (Mt 11,29).โ€ – St Caesarius of Arles (470-543) Bishop and Monk – Sermons to the people, no 37

PRAYER โ€“ Almighty God, to whom this world, with all itโ€™s goodness and beauty belongs, give us grace joyfully, to begin this day for Christ Your Son, in Him and with Him and to fill it, with an active love for all Your children, even those who may not like or who do us harm. Help us to love as You do, so that we may become like You. St Gabriel Posenti, you who spread your charity abundantly in your short life and continue to do so now from Heaven, pray for us. Through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever, amen.

Nostra Signora della Luce / Our Lady of Light, Palermo, Italy, (18th Century) and Memorials of the Saints – 27 February

Nostra Signora della Luce / Our Lady of Light, Palermo, Italy, (18th Century) – 27 February:

Early in the 18th century, a Jesuit, Father John Genovesi, lived in Palermo, Italy. At the beginning of his missionary career, he placed the souls over which he would have charge, under the protection of the Blessed Mother, deciding to take with him, to each of his missions, an image of Mary.
Not knowing which image of Our Lady to use, he consulted a pious visionary telling her to ask Our Lady what she desired. One day as this lady knelt in prayer, she beheld approaching her, the Queen of Heaven, surrounded by pomp, majesty and glory, surpassing anything else she had ever beheld in any of her visions. A torrent of light was shed from the body of the Virgin which was so clear, that in comparison with it, the sun seemed obscure. Yet, these rays were not painful to the sigh; but seemed rather, directed to the heart, which they instantly penetrated and filled with sweetness.
A group of Seraphs hovering in the air were suspended over their Empress and held a triple crown. The virginal body was clothed in a flowing robe, whiter than the snow and more brilliant than the sun. A belt inlaid with precious stones encircled Maryโ€™s beautiful form and from her graceful shoulders, hung a mantle of azure hue. Countless angels surrounded their Queen but, what most enchanted the contemplative soul, was the untold sweetness and grace and benignity shown in the motherly face of Mary. She radiated clemency and love. Our Lady told the pious woman, that she wished to be represented as she was now under the title of Most Holy Mother of Light, repeating the words three times.
The Jesuit hired labourers to begin the work on the picture of Our Lady of Light, however, neither the pious lady, nor the priest, were able to direct it and the result was that after completion, it did not answer Our Ladyโ€™s orders. Our Lady directed the woman to look at the image and seeing the mistake, she again betook herself to prayer and asked Mary to help her. Mary appeared again, commanding the woman to supervise the work, giving directions, while Mary would aid in an invisible manner. Pleased by the finished work, Mary appeared over it and blessed it with the Sign of the Cross.
This wonderful treasure is now in the City of Mexico in the Cathedral of Leon, formerly known as the Jesuit Church. The back of the picture bears the authenticity and four signatures, including that of Father Genovesi, SJ. The painting was transferred from Palermo, Sicily in 1702 and placed on the Altar in Leon in 1732. The people of Leon have an innate devotion and great tenderness toward the Mother of God. In 1849 they solemnly promised before the picture to make Our Lady of Light the patroness of Leon. This promise was confirmed by Pope Pius IX; Leo XIII authenticated the crowning of the image of Our Lady of Light in 1902.

Quote/s of the Day – 26 February – โ€œGo first and be reconciled with your brotherโ€ Matthew 5:20-26

Quote/s of the Day – 26 February – Friday of the First Week of Lent, Readings: Ezekiel 18:21-28, Psalms 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-7, 7-8, Matthew 5:20-26

โ€œGo first and be reconciled with your brotherโ€

Matthew 5:24

โ€œThen Peter came up and said to him,
โ€œLord, how often shall my brother sin against me
and I forgive him?
As many as seven times?โ€
Jesus said to him,
โ€œI do not say to you seven times
but seventy times seven.โ€

Matthew 18:21-22

โ€œThis is what I proclaim, what I testify,
what I cry out with a resounding voice:
Let no-one who has an enemy,
draw near the holy table,
to receive the Body of the Lord!
Let no-one who does approach it,
have an enemy!
Do you have an enemy?
Do not come near!
If you want to do so,
then first go and be reconciled,
then receive the Sacrament.โ€

St John Chrysostom (347-407)
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œSomeone who shows no clemency,
who is not clothed with the bowels of mercy and tears,
no matter what sort of student he is in spirituality,
such a one does not fulfil the law of Christ.โ€

St Jerome (347-420)
Father & Doctor of the Church

โ€œIf you do not close your ear to others,
you open Godโ€™s ear to yourself.โ€

โ€œIf you want God to know that you are hungry,
know that another is hungry.
If you hope for mercy, show mercy.
If you look for kindness, show kindness.
If you want to receive, give.
If you ask for yourself what you deny to others,
your asking is a mockery.โ€

St Peter Chrysologus (400-450)
Father & Doctor of the Church

โ€œSee to it that you refrain from harsh words.
But if you do speak them,
do not be ashamed to apply the remedy
from the same lips, that inflicted the wounds.โ€

St Francis of Paola OM (1416-1507)

โ€œYou must be reconciled with your enemies,
speak to them as if they had never done you
anything but good all your life,
keeping nothing in your heart but the charity,
which the good Christian should have for everyone,
so that we can all appear with confidence
before the tribunal of God.โ€

One Minute Reflection – 26 February – โ€œGive, Lord because we have given.โ€ Matthew 5:20-26

One Minute Reflection – 26 February – Friday of the First Week of Lent, Readings Ezekiel 18:21-28,ย Psalms 130:1-2,ย 3-4,ย 5-7,ย 7-8,ย Matthew 5:20-26

โ€œGo first and be reconciled with your brotherโ€ – Matthew 5:24

REFLECTION – โ€œIn heaven there is a mercy that we attain by mercy here on earthโ€ฆ And there are two kinds of almsgiving: one good, the other better. The first consists in offering a morsel of bread to the poor; the other in at once forgiving the brother who has sinned against you. With our Lordโ€™s help let us hasten to put into practice these two kinds of almsgiving that we may be fit to receive eternal pardon and the true mercy that is Christโ€™s. For He Himself has said: โ€œIf you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you will not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressionsโ€ (Mt 6,14-15). And elsewhere the Holy Spirit cries aloud: โ€œShould a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the Lord? Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows yet seek Godโ€™s pardon for his own sins?โ€ (Sir 28,3-4)โ€ฆ

Let us make haste as much as we can and, for as long as we live, to acquire these two kinds of alms and distribute them to others. Then, on the day of judgement, we shall be able to say with full assurance: โ€œGive, Lord, because we have given.โ€ St Caesarius of Arles (470-543) Bishop and Monk – Sermons to the people no.25

PRAYER โ€“ Lord God, true light and creator of light, grant that faithfully following the instructions of Your Son and pondering all that is holy, we may ever live in the splendour of Your presence. By the gifts of the Holy Spirit, may we always be light to our neighbour. Mary, Mother of Love and our loving mother, by your prayers, may we grow in charity and love. We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord amen.

Matthew 7:7

โ€œPrayer is the wing,
wherewith the soul flies to heaven
and meditation,
the eye,
wherewith we see God.โ€

St Ambrose (340-397)
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œAsk with tears,
seek with obedience,
knock with patience.โ€

St John Climacus (c 525-606)
Father of the Church

โ€œAll who ask receive, those who seek find
and to those who knock it shall be opened.
Therefore, let us knock
at the beautiful garden of Scripture.
It is fragrant, sweet and blooming
with various sounds of spiritual
and divinely inspired birds.

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 25 February – Ask, Seek, Knock – Matthew 7:7-12

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 25 February – Thursday of the First week of Lent, Readings: Esther C:12, 14-16, 23-25, Psalms 138:1-2,2-3, 7-8, Matthew 7:7-12 and the Memorial of Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio OFM (1502-1600) โ€œThe Angel of Mexicoโ€

โ€œAsk and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.โ€ – Matthew 7:7

REFLECTION – โ€œTry hard to please the Lord, pay Him unwearying attention within yourself, seek for Him with the aid of your thoughts, keep a check on your will and its decisions, control them so they are constantly directed towards Him. Then you will see how He draws near you and makes His dwelling within youโ€ฆ He stands there, taking note of your reasoning, thoughts, reflexions, examining how you are seeking Him, whether it is with all your soul or whether sluggishly and carelessly. And as soon as He sees you seek Him fervently, he will make himself known to you. He will appear to you, grant you His help, bestow the victory on you and save you from your enemies. In fact, when He sees how you are looking for Him, how you continually place all your hope in Him, then He will instruct you, teach you true prayer, give you that authentic charity that is Himself. Then, He will become everything to you: your paradise, life-giving tree, precious pearl, crown, architect, farmer, one subject to suffering but not afflicted with suffering, man, God, wine, living water, lamb, bridegroom, soldier, armour, Christ who is โ€œall in allโ€ (1Cor 15,28).

Just as a child cannot feed or take care of itself but can only look at its mother and cry until she takes pity and gives it her attention, so believing soul,s always hope in Christ and attribute to Him, all righteousness. As the shoot withers if it is separated from the vine (Jn 15,6) so does someone who wants to become faultless apart from Christ. Just as โ€œsomeone is a thief and robber who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhereโ€ (Jn 10,1), so it is with someone, who wants to become just, without Him who justifies.โ€ – St Macarius of Egypt (c 300-390) Monk – Spiritual Homilies no 30, 3-4

PRAYER – May We Love Only You By St Columban (543-615) Loving Saviour,
be pleased to show Yourself to us who knock,
so that in knowing You,
we may love only You,
love You alone,
desire You alone,
contemplate only You, day and night
and always think of You.
Inspire in us the depth of love
that is fitting for You to receive as God.
So may Your love pervade our whole being,
possess us completely
and fill all our senses,
that we may know no other love
but love for You,
Who are everlasting.
May our love be so great,
that the many waters of sky, land and sea
cannot extinguish it in us โ€“
many waters could not extinguish love.
May this saying be fulfilled
in us also, at least in part,
by Your gift,
Jesus Christ, our Lord,
to whom be glory forever and ever.
Amen

Quote/s of the Day โ€“ 24 February โ€“ Repent!

Quote/s of the Day โ€“ 24 February โ€“ Wednesday of the First week of Lent, Readings: Jonah 3:1-10,Psalms 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19, Luke 11:29-32

โ€œThe sign of Jonahโ€

Luke 11:29

โ€œEven now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.
Rend your hearts, not your garments
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger,
rich in kindness
and relenting in punishment.โ€

Joel 2:12-13

โ€œโ€ฆ In the conceitedness of our souls,
without taking the least trouble
to obey the Lordโ€™s commandments,
we think ourselves worthy
to receive the same reward
as those who have resisted sin to the death!โ€

St Basil the Great (329-379)
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œToday, for those who will not repent
at the approach of the kingdom of heaven,
the reproof of the Lord Jesus is the sameโ€ฆ
As for when the end of the world will be,
that is Godโ€™s concernโ€ฆ
Even so, the time is very near for each of us,
for we are mortal.โ€

St Augustine (354-430)
Father & Doctor of Grace

โ€œMy children, eternal life is being offered to us,
the kingdom of heaven is made ready
and Christโ€™s inheritance awaits us โ€ฆ
So let us run from now on with increased energy
and above all you, lazy, recalcitrant,
dull of heart, friends of murmuring who,
unless you improve, are like the cursed fig tree.
โ€ฆ Let us seek out the fight,
bravely pour with our sweat,
adorn ourselves with crowns,
gain praises and gather up,
like a treasure,
โ€œwhat eye has not seen
and ear has not heard
and what has not entered the human heartโ€
(1 Cor 2:9).

St Theodore the Studite (759-826)

โ€œAnd when I hear it said,
that God is good and He will pardon us
and then see, that men cease not from evil-doing,
oh, how it grieves me!
The infinite goodness
with which God communicates with us,
sinners as we are,
should constantly make us love and serve Him better
but we, on the contrary,
instead of seeing in His goodness
an obligation to please Him,
convert it into an excuse for sin,
which will, of a certainty,
lead in the end,
to our deeper condemnation.โ€

St Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510)

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 24 February โ€“ โ€œThe sign of Jonah – Luke 11:29-32

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 24 February โ€“ Wednesday of the First week of Lent, Readings: Jonah 3:1-10,Psalms 51:3-4,ย 12-13,ย 18-19,ย Luke 11:29-32

โ€œThe sign of Jonahโ€ – Luke 11:29

REFLECTION – โ€œGod showed patience in the face of man’s weakness because He saw beforehand, the victory He would eventually give him, through His Word. For, when โ€œpower was made perfect in weaknessโ€ (2 Cor 12:9), the Word caused God’s goodness and tremendous power, to be made manifest.
Indeed, it was the same with man, as it was with the prophet Jonah. God permitted Jonah to be swallowed by a sea-monster, not to make him altogether vanish away and die but, so that when he had been vomited out by the monster, he would become more subject to God and would give all the more glory to Him who had given him this unexpected deliverance.
It was, too, to lead the Ninevites to firm repentance and to convert them to Him, Who would deliver them from death, amazed as they were by the sign accomplished in Jonah โ€ฆ
In the same way, God permitted man to be swallowed by that great monster, the author of disobedience, not so that he should altogether vanish away and die but because God, had prepared beforehand, the salvation fulfilled by His Word by means of the โ€œsign of Jonah.โ€
This salvation has been prepared, for those who have the same feelings for God as Jonah did and, who confess Him in the same words: โ€œI am the servant of the Lord and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry landโ€ (Jon 1:9).
God desired that man, by receiving an unanticipated salvation from Him, would rise from the dead and worship God, saying with Jonah: โ€œOut of my distress I called to the Lord; from the midst of the nether world he heard my voiceโ€ (Jon 2:2). God desired, too, that man would always remain faithful in giving Him worship and unceasing thanks for the salvation he has received from Him.โ€ – St Irenaeus (130-208) Bishop of Lyons, Martyr, Theologian – Against the heresies III, 20, 1

PRAYER โ€“ โ€œDear Lord! It is just when I am in the world
that I have most need of You
because You know it is full of snares
that the devil has set for me.
You must hold my hand, dear Lord,
if You will not abandon me.
A little of the world is not bad for me;
it is even good, for it teaches me how small it is
and I feel the greater happiness
when I come back to You.
But that I may surely do so,
You must only loose Your hold a little,
that it may not try me too far,
You must not entirely leave hold.
Do You see dear Lord?
I wish to clasp Your hand โ€“ do not refuse me!โ€ (I Wish to Clasp Your Hand โ€“ Do Not Refuse Me! โ€“ Prayer of Eugene de Ferronays)
Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for us!

Quote/s of the Day – 23 February – The Lord’s Prayer – Matthew 6:7-15

Quote/s of the Day – 23 February – Tuesday of the First week of Lent, Readings: Isaiah 55:10-11, Psalms 34:4-5, 6-7,16-17, 18-19, Matthew 6:7-15

โ€œFather, hallowed be thy name.โ€

Luke 11:2

โ€œSo, my brothers, let us pray as God our master has taught us.
To ask the Father in words His Son has given us,
to let Him hear the prayer of Christ ringing in His ears,
is to make our prayer one of friendship, a family prayer.
Let the Father recognise the words of His Son.
Let the Son who lives in our hearts, be also on our lips.
We have Him as an Advocate for sinners, before the Father,
when we ask for forgiveness for ours sins,
let us use the words given by our Advocate.
He tells us โ€“
Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give you.
What more effective prayer could we then make,
in the name of Christ, than in the words of His own prayer?โ€

โ€œAs the Lordโ€™s Prayer continues, we ask:
Give us this day our daily bread.
We can understand this petition in a spiritual
and in a literal sense.
For in the divine plan both senses
may help toward our salvation.
For Christ is the Bread of Life;
this Bread does not belong to everyone
but is ours alone.
When we say, our Father,
we understand that he is the Father
of those who know Him and believe in Him.
In the same way, we speak of our daily bread,
because Christ is the Bread of those who touch His body.โ€

St Cyprian of Carthage (c 200- c 258)
Bishop, Father of the Church and Martyr
An excerpt from his โ€œOn the Lordโ€™s Prayerโ€

โ€œFor the author and giver of divine blessings
could not but be our teacher as well,
providing the words of this prayer,
as precepts of life,
for those disciples who believe in Him
and follow the way He taught in the flesh.
Through these words,
He has revealed the hidden treasures
of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:3)
that exist in Him as pure form.
And, in all who offer this prayer,
He kindles the desire to enjoy such treasures.โ€

Monk and Theologian

Quote/s of the Day โ€“ 22 February โ€“ ‘ … love the Spouse of Christ … ‘

Quote/s of the Day โ€“ 22 February โ€“ The Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter

โ€œThe Church, instituted by the Lord
and confirmed by the Apostles, is one for all men;
but the frantic folly of the diverse impious sects,
has cut them off from her.
It cannot be denied, that this tearing asunder of the faith,
has arisen from the defect of poor intelligence,
which twists what is read,
to confirm to its opinion,
instead of adjusting its opinion
to the meaning of what is read.
However, while individual parties fight among themselves,
the Church stands revealed,
not only by her own doctrines
but by those also, of her adversaries.
And although they are all ranged against her,
she confutes the most wicked error
which they all share,
by the very fact that she is alone and one.
All the heretics, therefore,
come against the Church
but while all the heretics can conquer each other,
they can win nothing for themselves.
For their victory is the triumph of the Church over all of them.
One heresy struggles against that teaching of another,
which the faith of the Church
has already condemned in the other heresy โ€“
for there is nothing which the heretics hold in common, โ€“
and, the result is that they affirm our faith,
while fighting among themselves.โ€

St Hilary (315-368)
Bishop of Poitiers
Father and Doctor of the Divinity of Christ

โ€œFor nothing more glorious,
nothing nobler,
nothing surely, more honourable
can be imagined, than to belong
to the One, Holy Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church,
in which we become members of one Body
as venerable as it is unique;
are guided by one supreme Head;
are filled with one divine Spirit;
are nourished during our earthly exile
by one doctrine and one heavenly Bread,
until at last, we enter into
the one, unending blessedness of heaven.
But lest we be deceived,
by the angel of darkness,
who transforms himself into an angel of light,
let this be the supreme law of our love –
to love the Spouse of Christ,
as Christ willed her to be
and as He purchased her with His blood.โ€

Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)
โ€œMystici Corporis Christiโ€ 1943

What did the Lord actually say to him? “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Mt 16:19).
For Peter had a somewhat abrupt character; if he had been without sin what sort of forgiveness would the disciples have received from him? This is why divine grace allowed him to fall into a certain fault, in order that his own trial should make him benevolent towards others.
Do you see how God can let someone fall into sin; this Peter, the leader of the Apostles, the unshakable foundation, indestructible rock, first in the Church, impregnable harbour, unshakable tower โ€” this same Peter who had said to Christ: “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you” (Mt 26:35), Peter who, by a divine revelation, had confessed the truth: “You are the Christ, Son of the Living God” (Mt 16:16). (โ€ฆ)
But as I said, God arranged it in this way and allowed Peter to sin because he had it in mind, to confer numerous people on him and he feared, that his roughness, joined to his impeccability, might make him unsympathetic towards his brothers.
He gave way to sin so that, remembering his own failure and the kindness of the Lord, he might testify to others, a grace of philanthropy in accord with the divine design conceived by God. The fall had been permitted to the one who was going to see himself entrusted with the Church, the Pillar of the Church, the Harbour of the Faith; the fall had been permitted to Peter, the Doctor of the Universe, in order that, the forgiveness received, might remain the foundation of love for others.โ€ – (Attr) St John Chrysostom (347-407) Bishop of Constantinople, Father and Doctor of the Church – On the apostle Peter and the prophet Elijah

PRAYER โ€“ Holy Father, send Your Divine Enlightener into the hearts of all Your faithful, filling us with the strength to fulfil our mission as the followers of the Chair of St Peter. And most of all, we pray Lord Holy God, to inspire and light the way of our Holy Father, Francis. Sustain and guide him, keep him in health and strength, to lead Your people by the Light of the Way and the Truth. Holy Father, have mercy on us, Holy Spirit guide and lead us, Lord Jesus Christ be our intercessor and teacher, amen.

โ€œThis is the time of fulfilment. The kingdom of God is at handโ€ – Mark 1:14

REFLECTION โ€œAfter John had been arrested, Jesus came into Galileeโ€ฆโ€ According to our interpretation, John stands for the Law and Jesus the Gospel. Indeed, John says: โ€œOne mightier than I is coming after meโ€ฆโ€ (Mk 1,7) and elsewhere: โ€œHe must increase, I must decreaseโ€ (Jn 3,30): in this way he compares the Law with the Gospel. And afterwards he says: โ€œI โ€“ that is, the Law โ€“ baptise you with water; he โ€“ that is the Gospel โ€“ will baptise you in the Holy Spiritโ€ (Mk 1,8). And so Jesus comes because John had been put in prison. In effect, the Law is finished, it has been brought to an end, it no longer has its former freedom. But we have passed from the Law to the Gospelโ€ฆ

โ€œJesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel, the Good News of the Kingdom of Godโ€โ€ฆ When I read the Law, prophets and psalms, I never heard them speak of the Kingdom of heaven – only in the gospel. For only when He came, of whom it is said โ€œthe Kingdom of God is in your midstโ€ (Lk 17,21) that Godโ€™s Kingdom was thrown openโ€ฆ In fact, before the Saviourโ€™s coming and the Light of the Gospel, before Christ opened the gate of paradise with the thief (Lk 23,43), all holy souls descended to the place of the dead. Jacob himself said: โ€œI will go down weeping and mourning to the nether worldโ€ (Gn 37,35)โ€ฆ In the Law, Abraham rests with the dead; in the gospel, the thief is in paradise. We are not denigrating Abraham, we all want to rest in his bosom (Lk 16,23 but we prefer Christ to Abraham, the Gospel to the Law.

We read that after Christโ€™s Resurrection many saints appeared in the holy city (Mt 27,53). Our Lord and Saviour preached on earth and preached, too, to the underworld. He died and descended to hell to free the souls held captive there (1Pt 3,18f.).โ€ – St Jerome (347-420), Priest, Translator of the Bible, Father and Doctor of the Church – Homilies on Saint Markโ€™s Gospel, no.2A ; SC 494

PRAYER – Through our annual Lenten observance Lord, deepen our understanding of the mystery of Christ and make it a reality in the conduct of our lives,. Teach us by the example and doctrine of St Peter Damian to prefer nothing whatever to Christ and to make the service of Your Church our chief concern and so, come to the joy of Your eternal Kingdom. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus, in unity with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day โ€“ 20 February โ€“ Saturday after Ash Wednesday, Readings: Isaiah 58: 9-14, Psalms 86:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, Luke 5:27-32

โ€œFollow me.โ€

Luke 5:27

โ€œThis is the glory of man –
to persevere and remain
in the service of God.
For this reason,
the Lord told His disciples:
‘You did not choose Me but I chose you.’
He meant that His disciples
did not glorify Him by following Him
but, in following the Son of God,
they were glorified by Him.
As He said:
‘I wish that where I am
they also may be,
that they may see My glory.’โ€

St Irenaeus (130-202)
Father of the Church and Martyr

From his Against Heresies (Book 4)

โ€œChrist is the artist,
tenderly wiping away
all the grime of sin
that disfigures the human face
and restoring Godโ€™s image
to its full beauty.โ€

St Gregory of Nyssa (c 335โ€“C 395)
Father of the Church

โ€œTo welcome the Word of God
into the interior depths of oneโ€™s heart
is to be revived by food in plenty
and the eternal spring.
It is to hunger and thirst no more (Jn 6,35).โ€

St Ambrose (340-397)
Bishop of Milan
Father & Doctor of the Church

Commentary on Saint Lukeโ€™s gospel, 5, 16 ; SC 45

โ€œWhere, then, is true freedom?
It is in the heart of one who loves
nothing more than God.
It is in the heart of one who is attached
neither to spirit nor to matter
but only to God.
It is in that soul which is not subject
to the โ€œIโ€ of egoism,
which soars above its own thoughts,
feelings, suffering and enjoyment.
Freedom resides in the soul
whose one reason for existence is God,
whose life is God
and nothing else but God.โ€

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 20 February โ€“ ‘. I, Levi …’ Luke 5:27-32

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 20 February โ€“ Saturday after Ash Wednesday, Readings Isaiah 58: 9-14,ย Psalms 86:1-2,ย 3-4,ย 5-6,ย Luke 5:27-32 and the Memorial of St Elutherius of Tournai (c 456-532) Bishop and Martyr and Saints Francisco (1908-1919) and Jacinta (1910-1920)

โ€œThose who are well, have no need of a physician but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.โ€ – Luke 5:31-32

REFLECTION – โ€œThe Apostle Paul said: โ€œTake off the old self with its practices and put on the new selfโ€ (Col 3,9-10)โ€ฆ This was the work Christ accomplished when He called Levi; He refashioned him into a new man. Similarly, it is as a new person, that the former publican prepares a banquet for Christ since Christ takes pleasure in him and he himself, merits to have a share in happiness with Christโ€ฆ He followed him now, happy, light-hearted and overflowing with joy.

โ€œI have the aspect of a publican no more,โ€ he said, โ€œI donโ€™t carry around the old Levi any longer; I put off Levi when I put on Christ. I flee from my earlier life; my Lord Jesus, you alone, who heal my wounds, I desire to follow. Who shall separate me from the love of God … ? tribulation? anguish? hunger? (Cf Rom 8,35). I am bound to You by faith as by nails, I am held fast by the worthy bonds of love. All Your commandments will be like a cautery that I will apply firmly to my wound; the remedy stings but it takes away the ulcerous infection. Lord Jesus, with Your powerful sword, cut away the corruption of my sins: come quickly, lance my hidden and varied passions. Purge away all infection in the new bath.

โ€œListen to me, you people who are fixed to the earth, you whose thoughts are intoxicated by your sins. I, Levi, was also wounded by similar passions. But I found a doctor who dwells in heaven and pours out His remedies on earth. He alone can cure my wounds since He Himself has none. He alone can remove the heartโ€™s pain and the soulโ€™s lethargy, for He knows everything that lies hidden.โ€St Ambrose (340-397) Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church – Commentary on Saint Lukeโ€™s Gospel, 5, 23.27

PRAYER โ€“ Come my all-powerful, ever-living God, look with compassion on our frailty and for our protection, stretch out to us Your strong right hand. Grant that by the prayers of Mary, our Mother and all your angels and saints we may change our ways, leave everything behind, proclaim the glory of Your kingdom and come safely home to You. St Eleutherius and Sts Jacinta and Francisco, pray for us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 18 February – Fast!

Quote/s of the Day – 18 February – Friday after Ash Wednesday, Readings: Isaiah 58:1-9, Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 18-19, Matthew 9:14-15

โ€œThen they will fastโ€

Matthew 9:15

โ€œThe days will come,
when the bridegroom is taken away from them
and then they will fast in that day.โ€

Mark 2:20

โ€œFasting cleanses the soul,
raises the mind,
subjects oneโ€™s flesh to the spirit,
renders the heart contrite and humble,
scatters the clouds of concupiscence,
quenches the fire of lust
and kindles the true light of chastity.
Enter again into yourself!โ€

St Augustine (354-430)
Bishop of Hippo
Father and Doctor of Grace

โ€œPrayer, mercy and fasting:
These three are one
and they give life to each other.
Fasting is the soul of prayer;
mercy is the lifeblood of fasting.
Let no-one try to separate them;
they cannot be separated.
If you have only one of them,
or not all together, you have nothing.โ€

โ€œSo if you pray, fast;
if you fast, show mercy;
if you want your petition to be heared,
hear the petition of others.
When you fast, see the fasting of others.
If you hope for mercy, show mercy.
If you look for kindness, show kindness.
If you want to receive, give.โ€

St Peter Chrysologus (400-450)
Bishop of Ravenna
Father and Doctor of Homilies

โ€œLet my fasting be based on temperance,
my soul in a state of grace,
my intention solely to please God,
then my efforts will ring true,
fit to enlarge my store of charity.โ€

โ€œThen they will fastโ€ – Matthew 9:15

REFLECTION – โ€œAlthough it is true, that the washing of regeneration is what chiefly makes โ€œpeople newโ€ (cf. Eph 4,24 โ€“ Col 3,10) nevertheless, because there is still for all of us, a daily renewal against the rust of mortality and in the path of progress, there is no-one, who ought not always to be better. In general, we still have to struggle, so that in the Day of Redemption, no-one may be found in sins of long standing.

What, therefore, dearly beloved, any Christian ought, at all times to do, should now be pursued more carefully and more devotedly, to fulfil the apostolic institution of forty days of fast, not only by scant food but especially by fasting from sinsโ€ฆTo these reasonable and holy fasts, nothing is joined more carefully, than the works of almsgiving, which under the one name of mercy, includes many praiseworthy acts of devotion, so that the spirits of all the faithful can be equal in merit, even with unequal means.โ€ – St Pope Leo the Great (400-461) Father and Doctor – 6th Sermon for Lent, 1-2; SC 49

PRAYER โ€“ Lord God, bestow a full measure of Your grace upon us, who seek to make our lenten journey fruitful. Confirm us in Your service and help us to bear witness to You in the society in which we live by our lives, our fasting and prayer, our gift of self. Listen kindly we pray, to the prayers of Bl Alvarez who so avidly followed in the footsteps of our Saviour, Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name, with the Holy Spirit, we pray, one God forever, amen.

โ€œEven now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.
Rend your hearts, not your garments
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger,
rich in kindness
and relenting in punishment.โ€

โ€œHe need not fear anything,
nor be ashamed of anything,
who bears the Sign of the Cross
on his brow.โ€

St Augustine (354-430)
Father & Doctor of the Church

โ€œKeep a clear eye toward lifeโ€™s end.
Do not forget your purpose
and destiny as Godโ€™s creature.
What you are in His sight,
is what you are and nothing more.
Remember that when you leave this earth,
you can take nothing that you have receivedโ€ฆ
but only what you have given โ€“ a full heart
enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.โ€

St Francis of Assisi (c 1181-1226)

โ€œFasting, when rightly practised,
lifts the mind to God

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 17 February โ€“ ‘Going to your room …’ St Augustine

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 17 February โ€“ Ash Wednesday, Readings Joel 2:12-18,ย Psalms 51:3-4,ย 5-6,ย 12-13,ย 14ย andย 17,ย 2 Corinthians 5:20,ย 6:2,ย Matthew 6:1-6,ย 16-18 and the Memorial of The Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order OSM โ€“ Formation on 15 August 1233.

โ€œBut when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.โ€ – Matthew 6:6

REFLECTION – โ€œGoing to your room, is returning to your heart. Blest are they who rejoice at returning to their heart and who find nothing bad thereโ€ฆ

They are greatly to be pitied who, returning home, have to fear they will be chased away because of bitter fights with their family. But how much unhappier are they, who do not dare return to their own conscience, for fear of being chased away by remorse for their sins. If you want to return to your heart with pleasure, purify it. โ€œBlest are the pure of heart for they shall see God.โ€ (Mt 5,8) Remove from your heart the stains of covetousness, the spots of miserliness, the ulcer of superstition, remove the sacrilege, the evil thoughts, the hatred. Iโ€™m not only speaking of those things against your friends but even of those against your enemies. Remove them all, then return to your heart and you will be happy.โ€ – St Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo, Father & Doctor of the Church – 2nd Discourse on Psalm 33, <8; PL 36,312

PRAYER โ€“ Heavenly Father, just as the Seven Holy Founders, were chosen to be messengers of Your love and forgiveness, grant we pray, that by their prayers, we too may bcome bearers of Your gracious love. Holy Father, You have given Yourself to us in the Face of Your Divine Son.   You have given Him to us to be our food and our portion.   You have consoled us with His presence on the Altar of Offering and washed us with His blood, day by day, You have sacrificed Him to save us.  We pray for the assistance of our holy Mother, during our journey to the eternal glory of the kingdom. Through Jesus our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 16 February โ€“ Readings: Genesis 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10, Psalms 29:1 and 2, 3-4, 3 and 9-10, Mark 8:14-21

Sacred Scripture – A Light for our Path

โ€œDo you not yet understand or comprehend?
Are your hearts hardened?โ€

Mark 8:17

โ€œO KEY OF DAVID,
and Sceptre of the House of Israel,
who opens and no-one shuts,
who shuts and no-one opens.
Come and bring forth
the captive from his prison,
he who sits in darkness
and in the shadow of death.โ€

O Lord,
You have given us Your word
for a light to shine upon our path,
grant us so to meditate on that word
and follow its teaching,
that we may find in it,
the light that shines more and more
until the perfect day.
Amen

โ€œLet sleep find you holding your Bible
and when your head nods,
let it be resting on the sacred page.โ€

St Jerome (343-420)
โ€œThe Man of the Bibleโ€
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œJesus, open the eyes of my heart,
that I may hear Your word
and understand and do Your will.
Open the eyes of my mind
to the understanding
of Your Gospel teachings.
Speak to me the hidden
and secret things of Your wisdom.
Enlighten my mind and understanding
with the light of Your knowledge,
not only to cherish those things
that are written
but to do them.
Amenโ€

St John Chrysostom (347-407)
Father and Doctor

โ€œThe Sacred Scriptures grow
with the one who reads them.โ€

St Pope Gregory the Great (540-604)
โ€œFather of the Fathersโ€ and Doctor of the Church

โ€œAll who ask receive, those who seek find
and to those who knock it shall be opened.
Therefore, let us knock
at the beautiful garden of Scripture.
It is fragrant, sweet and blooming
with various sounds of spiritual
and divinely inspired birds.
They sing all around our ears,
capture our hearts,
comfort the mourners,
pacify the angry
and fill us with everlasting joy.โ€

โ€œDo you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?โ€ – Mark 8:17

REFLECTION – โ€œI know, O Lord God Almighty, that I owe You, as the chief duty of my life, the devotion of all my words and thoughts, to Yourselfโ€ฆ In our want we shall pray for the things we need. We shall bring an untiring energy to the study of Your prophets and apostles and we shall knock for entrance at every gate of hidden knowledge.
But it is Yours to answer the prayer, to grant the thing we seek, to open the door on which we beat (Lk 11,9). Our minds are born with dull and clouded vision, our feeble intellect is penned within the barriers of an impassable ignorance concerning Your mysteries.
But the study of Your revelation, elevates our soul to the comprehension of sacred truth and submission to the faith, is the path to a certainty beyond the reach of unassisted reason. And, therefore, we look to Your support for the first trembling steps of this undertaking, to Your aid, that it may gain strength and prosper. We look to You, to give us the fellowship of that Spirit who guided the prophets and apostles, that we may take their words in the sense in which they spoke and assign its right shade of meaning, to every utteranceโ€ฆ Grant us, therefore, precision of language, soundness of argument, grace of style, loyalty to truth. Enable us to utter the things that we believe.โ€ – St Hilary (315-368) Bishop of Poitiers, Father and Doctor of the Church – The Trinity, I, 37-38

PRAYER โ€“ God of mercy, teach us to live as You have ordained. Help us to follow Your commandments with courage and steadfast devotion. Let our Saviour, true Light of the world, be our master. Fill us with the fire of the Holy Spirit, that we grow in holiness. Grant blessed Trinity, that by the prayers of Bl Philippa Mareri, we may strive towards our heavenly home. Our Morning Offering โ€“ 16 February

Grant us Your Light, O Lord
By The Venerable St Bede (673-735)
Father and Doctor of the Church

Grant us Your light, O Lord,
so that the darkness of our hearts,
may wholly pass away
and we may come at last,
to the light of Christ.
For Christ is that morning star,
who, when the night of this world has passed,
brings to His saints,
the promised light of life
and opens to them,
everlasting day.
Amen

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 15 February โ€“ ‘Be very attentive to what you see and believe what you do not see.’ – Mark 8:11-13

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 15 February โ€“ Readings: Genesis 4:1-15,ย 25,ย Psalms 50:1ย andย 8,16-17,ย 20-21,ย Mark 8:11-13 and the Memorial of St Claude de la Colombiere SJ (1641-1682) โ€œApostle of the Sacred Heartโ€

And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said,
โ€œWhy does this generation seek a sign?โ€
– Mark 8:12

REFLECTION – โ€œAdmire Godโ€™s wonderful work, come out of your sleep. Are you only going to admire extraordinary miracles? But are they any greater than those that daily take place before your eyes? Are people astonished because our Lord Jesus Christ satisfied several thousand persons with five loaves (Mt 14,19f) and are not surprised that a few seeds are enough to cover the ground with abundant harvests? They are filled with wonder when they see our Saviour change water into wine (Jn 2,19); isnโ€™t it the same thing when rain goes through the roots of the vine? The author of both these miracles is the sameโ€ฆ

Our Lord worked miracles and yet many despised himโ€ฆ They said to themselves : ‘The works are divine but, as for Him, he is only a man.’ Therefore, you see two things: divine works on the one hand and a Man on the other. If those divine works can only be carried out by God, could it not be because God is hidden in this Man? Yes. Be very attentive to what you see and believe what you do not see. He who calls on you to believe, has not abandoned you to yourself, even if He asks you to believe what you cannot see, He has not left you without anything to see, to help you believe what is unseen. Isnโ€™t creation itself a faint sign, a faint manifestation of the Creator? In addition, look at Him who comes into the world and works miracles. You were unable to see God but you were able to see a Man – therefore God became Man, so that what you see and what you believe, should be but One!โ€ – St Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo (North Africa), Father and Doctor of the Church – Sermon 126, 4-5

PRAYER โ€“ Almighty Lord and God, protect us by Your power throughout the course of this day, even as You have enabled us to begin it. Your grace is all that we need, to see the loving kindness of Your Son, our Lord Jesus in all we see and do and think. Do not let us turn aside from His path but by the faith You have granted us, let us find meaning in all, which is the sign of Your glory. Do not let us turn aside to sin and may the intercession of St Claude de la Colombiere (1641-1682), grant us courage and peace. Through Jesus Christ, our Saviour, with the Holy Spirit, God now and forever, amen.

For you, I suffered hunger, thirst, fatigue.
I roamed the mountains, ravines and valleys
looking for you, my lost sheep.
I took the name of Lamb, to bring you back,
calling you with My shepherdโ€™s voice.
And I want to give My life for you,
to tear you away from claws of the wolf.
I bear everything so that you may cry out :
โ€œBlessed are You, the one who comes to call Adam.โ€

St Romanus the Melodist (c 490-c 556)

โ€œBut He still follows behind us and counsels us,
that we have despised Him
but He still does not cease to call us.
We turn our backs on His face, so to speak,
when we reject His words,
when we trample His commandments underfoot
but He who sees that we reject Him,
still calls out to us by His commandments
and waits for us by His patience,
stands behind us and calls us back
when we have turned away.โ€

St Pope Gregory the Great (540-604)
Father & Doctor of the Church

Cast Upon Us a Look of Mercy
By Blessed Pope Pius IX (1792-1878)

O Jesus!
Cast upon us a look of mercy,
turn Your Face towards each of us
as You did to Veronica,
not that we may see it with our bodily eyes,
for this we do not deserve
but turn it towards our hearts,
so that, remembering You,
we may ever draw from this fountain of strength,
the vigour necessary to
sustain the combats of life.
Amen

โ€œโ€ฆ Recollect, that heavy Cross
is the weight of our sins.
As it fell upon His neck and shoulders,
it came down with a shock.
Alas! what a sudden, heavy weight
have I laid upon Thee, O Jesus.
โ€ฆ Ah! how great a misery is it
that I have lifted up my hand
against my God.โ€

One Minute Reflection – 13 February – ‘ … The mystery of the Word of God …’ Mark 8:1-10

One Minute Reflection – 13 February – Readings: Genesis 3:9-24,ย Psalms 90:2,ย 3-4,ย 5-6,ย 12-13,ย Mark 8:1-10 and the Memorial of Blessed Jordan of Saxony OP (1190-1237)

โ€œAnd if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.โ€ – Mark 8:3

REFLECTION – โ€œLord Jesus, how well I know You have no wish to allow these people here with me, to remain hungry but to feed them, with the food You distribute, and so, strengthened with Your food, they will have no fear of collapsing from hunger. I know, too, that You have no wish to send us away hungry, eitherโ€ฆ As You have said – You do not want them to collapse on the way, meaning to collapse in the byways of this life, before reaching the end of the road, before coming to the Father and understanding that You come from the Fatherโ€ฆ

Our Lord takes pity, then, so that none may collapse along the wayโ€ฆ Just as He makes it rain on the just as well as the unjust (Mt 5,45) so He feeds the just, as well as the unjust. Was it not thanks to the strength of the food, that the holy prophet Elijah, when he was collapsing on the way, was able to walk for forty days? (1Kgs 19,8). It was an angel who gave that food to him but, in your case, it is Christ Himself who feeds you. If you preserve the food you have received, in this way, then you will walk, not forty days and forty nightsโ€ฆ but for forty years, from your departure from the borders of Egypt to your arrival in the land of plenty, the land where milk and honey flow (Ex 3,8)โ€ฆ

And so Christ shares out the foodstuffs and, there is no question, He wants to give it to all. He withholds it from no-one, for He provides for everyone. Nevertheless, when He breaks the loaves and gives them to the disciples, unless you hold out your hands to receive your portion, you will collapse along the wayโ€ฆ This bread that Jesus breaks, is the mystery of the Word of God, it increases as it is distributed. With only a few words Jesus has provided abundant nourishment for all peoples. He has given us His words as bread and, while we are tasting them, they increase in our mouthsโ€ฆ Even as the crowds are eating, the pieces increase and become more numerous to such an extent that, in the end, the leftovers are even more plentiful than the loaves that were shared.โ€ – St Ambrose (340-397) Father and Doctor of the Church – Commentary on the Gospel of Saint Luke, VI, 73-88

PRAYER โ€“ Lord support us as we pray, protect us day and night. Grant us the grace of total trust and teach us to hear Your Voice and do Your Will. By Your Word You teach and lead us and Your Word, we share with all. May Your food always strengthen us for the journey that we may reach the end of the road in Heaven. May the prayers of Blessed Jordan of Saxony, help us and strengthen us that we may grow in worthiness to receive Your grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day – โ€“ 12 February โ€“ The Divine Remedy

Quote/s of the Day – โ€“ 12 February โ€“ Readings: Genesis 3:1-8, Psalms 32:1-2, 5, 6,7, Mark 7:31-37

The Divine Remedy

But the serpent said to the woman,
โ€œYou will not surely die.
For God knows, that when you eat of it,
your eyes will be opened
and you will be like God โ€ฆโ€

Genesis 3:4-5

โ€œThose who have been tricked into taking poison,
offset its harmful effect, by another drug.
The remedy, moreover,
just like the poison,
has to enter the system,
so that its remedial effect
may thereby spread through the whole body.
Similarly, having tasted the poison,
that is the fruit,
that dissolved our nature,
we were necessarily, in need of something, to reunite it.
Such a remedy had to enter into us,
so that it might, by its counteraction,
undo the harm the body had already encountered from the poison.
And what is this remedy?
Nothing else than the body
that proved itself superior to death
and became the source of our life.โ€

St Greogory of Nyssa (c 335โ€“ c 395)
Father of the Church

โ€œAn inborn imperfection in our human dough
was removed, thanks to the leaven
that comes from His perfect bodyโ€ฆ
To complete what was missing,
in these human bodies of ours,
He gave something of Himself,
just as He gives Himself to be eaten โ€ฆโ€

St Ephrem (306-373)
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œThis Body He gave to us to keep and eat,
as a mark of His intense loveโ€™.โ€

St John Chrysostom (347 to 407)
Father & Doctor of the Church

โ€œDust, so to speak,
had forcibly entered humanityโ€™s eye;
earth had entered it,
had injured the eye
and it could not see the light.
โ€ฆ That physician made a salve for you.
And because He came, in such a way,
that by His flesh,
He might extinguish the faults of the flesh
and by His death He might kill death โ€ฆ โ€

St Augustine (354-430)
Father and Doctor of the Church

โ€œAnd taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears and, after spitting. touched his tongue.โ€ – Mark 7:33

REFLECTION โ€“ โ€œThe Lord heals all your illsโ€ (Ps 102:3). Never fear, all your ills will healed. You say they are big ones but the Doctor is even greater. For an all-powerful Doctor there is no such thing as an incurable sickness. Simply let yourself be cared for, do not push away His hand, He knows what to do. Do not be happy only when He acts with gentleness but bear with it, too, when He prunes. Accept the unpleasantness of the cure, by thinking of the healing it will bring you.
Notice all those things, brethren which people put up with in their physical ills, so as to prolong their lives a few days โ€ฆ You, at least, are not suffering for an uncertain result โ€“ He, Who has promised you your health,, cannot be mistaken. Why is it that doctors are sometimes mistaken? Because they have not created the body they are treating. But God has made your body, God has made your soul. He knows how to re-create that which He has created; He knows how to re-fashion that which He has formed. You have only to abandon yourself into His Doctorโ€™s Hand! โ€ฆ Endure His Hands, then, O soul who โ€œblesses Him and forgets not all His benefits โ€“ He heals all your illsโ€ (P2 102:2-3).
He who had made you never to become sick, if you would keep His precepts, will He not heal you? He who made the Angels and, in re-creating you, will make you equal to the Angels โ€“ will He not heal you? He who made Heaven and earth, will He not heal you, after having made you, in His Image? (Gn 1:26) He will heal you but you must consent to be healed. He heals every sickness perfectly but He does not heal it, in spite of Himself โ€ฆ Your health is Christ!โ€ โ€“ St Augustine (354-430) Father and Doctor of the Church โ€“ Sermon on the Psalms, Ps 102[103]: 5-6; PL 37, 1319

PRAYER โ€“ Almighty and merciful God, open the ears and eyes of our hearts and fill us with Your grace. May we follow You in holiness all the days of our lives. Grant we pray, that as You brought Your Saints and Martyrs to overcome fearlessly, the persecutions of Your people, that we too may remain invincible under Your protection and by their prayers, be strengthened against the snares of the enemy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

โ€œI am the Immaculate Conception.โ€

Our Lady of Lourdes to St Bernadette
25 March 1858

โ€œMary is the great mould of God โ€ฆ
He who is cast in this divine mould
is soon formed and moulded in Jesus Christ
and Jesus Christ in him.
With little effort and in a short time,
he will become divine,
since he is cast in the same mould
which formed a God.โ€

St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

O daughter of King David
and Mother of God,
the universal King.
O Divine and living object
whose beauty has charmed God the Creator;
your whole soul is completely open
to Godโ€™s action and attentive to God alone.
โ€ฆ Your womb will be the abode
of the one whom no place can contain.
Your milk will provide nourishment for God,
in the little Infant Jesus.
Your hands will carry God
and your knees will serve
as a throne for Him
that is more noble
than the throne of the Cherubim.
โ€ฆ You are the temple of the Holy Spirit,
the city of the living God,
made joyous by abundant flowers,
the sacred flowers of Divine grace.
You are all-beautiful
and very close to God,
above the Cherubim
and higher than the Seraphim,
right near God Himself!
Amen

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 13 February โ€“ ‘… Trust in the goodness of the supreme Benefactor …’ The Canaanite woman – Mark 7:24-30

One Minute Reflection โ€“ 13 February โ€“ Readings: Genesis 2:18-25, Psalms 128:1-2, 3,4-5, Mark 7:24-30 and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

โ€œYes, Lord, yet even the dogs under the table eat the childrenโ€™s crumbs.โ€ โ€ฆ Mark 7:28

REFLECTIONโ€œO woman, your faith is great. Let it be done to you as you wishโ€ (Mt 15:28). Indeed, she had great enough faith, since she knew neither the ancient miracles, commands and promises of the prophets, nor the more recent ones of the Lord Himself. In addition, as often as she was disregarded by the Lord, she persevered in her entreaties and she did not cease knocking by asking Him, though she knew only by popular opinion that He was the Saviour. On account of this, she secured the great object for which she implored. โ€ฆ
If one of us has a conscience polluted by the stain of avarice, conceit, vain-glory, indignation, irascibility, or envy and the other vices, he has “a daughter badly troubled by a demon” like the Canaanite woman. He should hasten to the Lord, making supplication for her healing. โ€ฆ Being submissive with due humility, [such a person] must not judge himself to be worthy of the company of the sheep of Israel, (that is, souls that are pure) but instead, he must be of the opinion, that he is unworthy of heavenly favours. Nevertheless, let him not in despair rest from the earnestness of his entreaty but with his mind free of doubt, let him trust in the goodness of the supreme Benefactor, for the One who could make a confessor from a robber (Lk 23:39f.), an Apostle from a persecutor (Acts 9:1-30, an Evangelist from a publican (Mt 9:9-13) and who could make sons for Abraham out of stones, could turn even the most insignificant dog, into an Israelite sheep.โ€ – St Bede the Venerable (673-735) Father and Doctor of the Church – Homilies on the Gospels

PRAYER โ€“ Grant us, O merciful God, protection in our weakness, that we, who keep the Memorial of the Immaculate Mother of God, may, with the help of her intercession, rise up from our iniquities. Grant, we pray that our lives may be gifts to all those who cry out in pain. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever, amen.

it is evil men who make this evil world.โ€

โ€œWhat is reprehensible,

Father, In Your Goodness
By St Benedict of Nursia (480-547)

Father, in Your goodness
grant me the intellect, to comprehend You,
the perception, to discern You,
and the reason, to appreciate You.
In Your kindness
endow me with the diligence, to look for You,
the wisdom, to discover You
and the spirit, to apprehend You.
In Your graciousness
bestow on me a heart, to contemplate You,
ears to hear You,
eyes to see You,
and a tongue, to speak of You.
In Your mercy confer on me
a conversation pleasing to You,
the patience to wait for You,
and the perseverance to long for You.
Grant me a perfect end –
Your holy presence.
Amen
