Prayer of Dedication to the Lord
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)

Lord,
I am Yours
and I must belong to no one but You.
My soul is Yours
and I must live only by You.
My will is Yours
and must love only for You.
I must love You as my first cause,
since I am from You.
I must love You as my end and rest,
since I am for You.
I must love You more than my own being,
since my being subsists by You.
I must love You more than myself,
since I am all Yours
and all in You.
Amen.prayer of dedication to the lord - st francis de sales - 2017

The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity 18-25 January 2018

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS FOR THE EIGHT DAYS
Your right hand, O Lord,
glorious in power
(Ex 15:6)

Day 6: Let us look to the interests of others

Isaiah 25:1-9 Let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation

Psalm 82 Maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute

Philippians 2:1-4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others

Luke 12:13-21 Be on your guard against all kinds of greed

Changing international banking regulations continue to have a negative impact on the trade and commerce of the Caribbean and threaten the economic survival of many families.   It has become increasingly difficult for Caribbean people working abroad to send money back to their families.   The Churches in the Caribbean introduced the Credit Union movement in order for the poor to have access to finance for economic activity.

Reflection

The witness of the Scriptures is consistent that God always makes a preferential option for the poor: the right hand of God acts for the powerless against the powerful. Similarly, Jesus consistently warns against the dangers of greed. Despite these warnings, however, the sin of greed often infects our Christian communities and introduces a logic of competition: one community competing against the next. We need to remember that insofar as we fail to differentiate ourselves from the world, but conform to its divisive competing spirit, we fail to offer ‘a refuge for the needy in distress, a shelter from the storm’.

For our different churches and confessions, to be rich in the sight of God is not a case of having many members belonging – or donating – to one’s own community. Rather, it is to recognise that as Christians we have countless brothers and sisters right across the world, united across the economic divisions of ‘North’ and ‘South’. Conscious of this fraternity in Christ, Christians can join hands in promoting economic justice for all.

Prayer

Almighty God,

give courage and strength to your church
to continually proclaim justice and righteousness
in situations of domination and oppression.

As we celebrate our unity in Christ,
may your Holy Spirit help us
to look to the needs of others.

Amen.

The right hand of God
is striking in our land,
striking out at envy, hate and greed;
our selfishness and lust,
our pride and deeds unjust,
are destroyed by the right hand of God.DAY SIX - OCTAVE FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY - 23 JAN 2018

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day One – 23 January

Novena to Blessed Benedict Daswa- Day One – 23 January

1st Day – Baptised in Christ

Word of GodWe were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.   For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection. (Romans 6,4-5)

Reflection – What does the baptism I have received mean to me?   Do I really wish to become holy, as God is holy?

PrayerYou guide me along the right path for the sake of your name.   Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and your staff give me courage.   I will dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come. (Psalm 23, 2b-4.6)

NOVENA PRAYER:

O Blessed Trinity,
I believe that You dwell in me through my baptism.
I love You, I adore You and I worship You.
I give You thanks for Blessed Benedict,
Whom You chose to bear witness unto death for his faith
In Jesus Christ, my Saviour and my Lord.

Almighty Father, You filled the heart of Blessed Benedict,
With great love and zeal in building up Your kingdom.
You gave him the courage and the strength
To stand up for his faith without fear, even the fear of death.

Loving God, keep me free from all deeds of darkness.
Protect me from evil spirits and the powers of evil.
Make me a true apostle of life in my family and in society.
May Your light, O Lord, shine upon me and through me.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Blessed Benedict,
I ask that I may follow his example
Of always being ready to forgive in a Christian spirit.
You know all about my many problems and worries
And my great fears when I look to the future.
I draw strength and courage from the life of Blessed Benedict.

I come to You now, Lord
and through his intercession
I ask for this very special favour
…………………………………
(mention your request/s)
if it is according to Your will.

Help me always to follow the good example of Blessed Benedict.
By daily prayer and regular attendance at Mass,
Help me to love You, O Lord, above all things
And to love others as You love me.
Amen.

Novena to St Paul in preparation for the Feast of The Conversion of St Paul on 25 January

Day Eight – 23 January

“In the ancient Church, Baptism was also called “illumination” because this Sacrament gives light;  it truly makes one see.   In Paul what is pointed out theologically was also brought about physically:  healed of his inner blindness, he sees clearly.   Thus St Paul was not transformed by a thought but by an event, by the irresistible presence of the Risen One whom subsequently he would never be able to doubt, so powerful had been the evidence of the event, of this encounter…………….This encounter is a real renewal that changed all his parameters.   Now he could say that what had been essential and fundamental for him earlier had become “refuse” for him;  it was no longer “gain” but loss, because henceforth the only thing that counted for him was life in Christ.” Pope Benedict XVI 2008

LET US PRAY:

Glorious St Paul,
your conversion is a powerful witness to the world
that God loves us and does not give up on us,
no matter how far we stray.
May every circumstante of my life be an occasion
to change my way of thinking,
to renounce self-will and
to surrender myself to the wisdom and tenderness of Jesus Christ
who is acting to make me His saint.
Pray St Paul, that I too may be able to acclaim
“It is not I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Pray that I may love God’s will and providence for me.
In this confidence, I entrust to you, St Paul,
these, my intentions

Novena to St Francis de Sales Day NINE – 23 January

Novena to St Francis de Sales
Day NINE – 23 January

“Think for a moment of the piety of the Madonna when the angel told her that the Spirit would overshadow her.   What sentiments of humility, confidence and courage!   At the very moment when she understood that God had given her His heart, that is, His Son, she gave herself to God.   Her soul was flooded with charity, so she could say with the sacred spouse, “…My heart trembled within me and I grew faint when he spoke.” [Sg:5:4]   As far as we are concerned, we receive a similar grace in Communion, because not an angel but Jesus Christ Himself assures us that in it the Holy Spirit descends on us.   Heavenly power covers us with its shadow and the Son of God really comes to us.   He can say that He is conceived and born in us.   Truly then, the soul can respond with the Madonna, “I am the servant of the Lord; let is be done to me as you say.” [Lk 1:38] (St Francis de Sales Spiritual Directory, Art. 12)

O blessed Francis de Sales,
who on earth did excel in a life of virtue,
especially in the love of God and neighbour,
I earnestly ask you to take me under your compassionate care and protection.
Obtain for me conversion of mind and heart.
Grant that all people, especially

may experience the depth of God’s redeeming and healing love.
Teach me to fix my eyes on the things of heaven
even as I walk each day with my feet planted firmly on the earth.
Help me, through the practice of virtue and the pursuit of devotion,
to avoid anything that would otherwise cause me to stumble
in my attempt to follow Christ and to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit.
Encouraged by your prayers and example,
help me to live fully with the hope of experiencing

Thought for the Day – 23 January – The Memorial of St Marianne Cope (1838-1918)

“The life of Marianne Cope is a wonderful work of divine grace.   She demonstrated the beauty of the life of a true Franciscan.   The encounter of Mother Marianne with those suffering from leprosy took place when she was far along on her journey to Christ.   For 20 years she had been a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St Francis of Syracuse in New York.   She was already a woman of vast experience and was spiritually mature.   But suddenly God called her to a more radical giving, to a more difficult missionary service.

Blessed Marianne, who was Provincial Superior at the time, heard the voice of Christ in the invitation of the Bishop of Honolulu.   He was looking for Sisters to assist those suffering from leprosy on the Island of Molokai.   Like Isaiah, she did not hesitate to answer:  “Here I am. Send me!” (Is 6: 8).   She left everything and abandoned herself completely to the will of God, to the call of the Church and to the demands of her new brothers and sisters.   She put her own health and life at risk.”….Homily of Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins on the Beatification of St Marianne Cope 14 May 2005

Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully.   Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai.

Missionary to Leprosy Patients

To the Reverend Sister Marianne, Missionary to Leprosy Patients
Matron of the Bishop Home, Kalaupapa.

To see the infinite pity of this place,
The mangled limb, the devastated face,
The innocent sufferers smiling at the rod,
A fool were tempted to deny his God.
He sees and shrinks; but if he look again,
Lo, beauty springing from the breasts of pain!
He marks the sisters on the painful shores,
And even a fool is silent and adores.robert louis stevenson's poem for st marianne cope no 2 - 23 jan 2018

One Minute Reflection – 23 January – The Memorial of St Marianne Cope T.O.S.F. (1838-1918) Virgin, Professed Sister of St Francis, missionary to leprosy patients

“And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I sen, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’”…Isaiah 6:8

REFLECTION – “She left everything and abandoned herself completely to the will of God, to the call of the Church and to the demands of her new brothers and sisters.    She put her own health and life at risk.   For 35 years she lived, to the full, the command to love God and neighbour.   She willingly worked with Blessed Damian de Veuster, who was at the end of his extraordinary apostolate.   Blessed Marianne loved those suffering from leprosy more than she loved her very self.   She served them, educated them and guided them with wisdom, love and strength.   She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus.
Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother.   She drew strength from her faith, the Eucharist, her devotion to our Blessed Mother and from prayer.   She did not seek earthly honours or approval.   She wrote: “I do not expect a high place in heaven. I will be very grateful to have a little corner where I can love God for all eternity”.” …Homily of Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins on the Beatification of St Marianne Cope 14 May 2005i do not expect - st marianne cope - 23 jan 2018

Our Morning Offering – 23 January – The Memorial of St Ildephonsus (607-667)

Prayer of Saint Ildephonsus (607-667)

Act of Consecration to Mary

The Abundance of the Sweetness of Thy Son

I come to thee, only Virgin Mother of God,
and fall prostrate before thee,
who alone didst cooperate in the Incarnation of God.
I humble myself before thee,
who alone were found to be the Mother of my Lord.
I pray thee, who alone were found to be the handmaid of thy Son:
obtain that my sins be wiped away;
command that I be cleansed of the wickedness of my deeds,
and, that I may love the glory of thy virtue,
reveal to me the abundance of the sweetness of thy Son.

Thou Art His Co-Worker in My Redemption

Bestow upon me the gift of proclaiming the true faith of thy Son,
and of defending it.
Grant that I may cleave to God and to thee,
that I may serve thy Son and thee,
that I may be His bondsman and thine;
His, because He is my Creator,
and thine, because thou art the Mother of my Creator;
His, because He is Lord of the angelic powers,
and thine, because thou art the handmaid of the Lord of All;
His, because He is God,
and thine because thou art the Mother of God;
His, because He is my Redeemer,
and thine because thou art His co-worker in my redemption.

The Body by Which He Healed My Wounds

That which He wrought for my redemption,
verily He formed in thine own person.
That He might be my Redeemer,
He became thy Son.
That He might be the price of my ransom,
He became incarnate of thy flesh.
The Body by which He healed my wounds,
He took from thee so that He, in it, might be wounded.
The mortal Body by which He took away my death,
He took from thy mortality.
The Body by which He brought my sins to nought,
He received sinless from thee.
This nature of mine that ahead of time, in Himself,
He placed above the angels in the glory of His Father’s right hand,
He assumed — humbling Himself — out of thine own true body.

I Am Thy Slave

Therefore, I am thy slave,
because Thy Son is my Master.
Therefore thou art my Lady,
because thou art the handmaid of my Lord.
Therefore I am the slave of the handmaid of my Lord,
because thou, my Lady, didst become the Mother of my Lord.
Therefore I have become thy slave,
because thou didst become the Mother of my Maker.

By the Holy Spirit

I pray thee, I pray thee, holy Virgin,
may I, by the Spirit through Whom thou didst give birth to Jesus,
have Jesus and hold Him.
By that Spirit through Whom
thou didst conceive this same Jesus in thy flesh,
may my soul receive Jesus.

Let the Spirit gift me with the knowledge of Jesus,
this Spirit by Whom it was given Thee
to bear Jesus and to give Him birth.
Let the Spirit in Whom thou didst
declare thyself the handmaid of the Lord,
choosing that it should be done unto thee
according to the Angel’s word,
grant me to proclaim the heights of Jesus with lowliness.

To Love Jesus and to Fear Him

In the Spirit thou didst adore Jesus as thy Lord
and gaze upon Him as thy Son;
in that same Spirit may I love Him.
And may I fear this same Jesus,
with that reverence by which He, truly being God,
became subject to His parents.

“For over thirty years now, my dear old friend Father Jacob, O.P. and I have renewed our consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God annually on January 1st. Experience has taught me the wisdom of entrusting the new year to Our Blessed Lady, Mediatrix of All Graces. Readers of Vultus Christi may want to join me in asking the Mother of God again today to open her hands over the entire year.
I offer today my translation of the sublime prayer of Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo (+667). This prayer, taken from his treatise De virginitate perpetua Sanctae Mariae, is one of the earliest expressions of total consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In it, heralding an expression that Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort will make famous, the Bishop of Toledo declares himself the slave of Mary, Handmaid of the Lord. He also emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit with theological keenness and tender piety.” …..By Dom Mark Daniel Kirby is Conventual Prior of Silverstream Priory in Stamullen, County Meath, Ireland. The ecclesial mandate of his Benedictine community is the adoration of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar in a spirit of reparation, and in intercession for the sanctification of priests.

And, for the image, I have excerpted the last three stanzas and modernised the English.

I pray you, I pray you, holy Virgin,
may I, by the Spirit through Whom
you gave birth to Jesus,
have Jesus and hold Him.
By that Spirit through Whom
you conceived this same Jesus in your flesh,
may my soul receive Jesus.
Let the Spirit gift me
with the knowledge of Jesus,
this Spirit by Whom it was given to you
to bear Jesus and to give Him birth.
Let the Spirit in Whom you declared
yourself the handmaid of the Lord,
choosing that it should be done unto you
according to the Angel’s word,
grant me to proclaim
the heights of Jesus with lowliness.
In the Spirit you adored Jesus as your Lord
and gazed upon Him as your Son;
in that same Spirit may I love Him.
And may I fear this same Jesus,
with that reverence by which He,
truly being God,
became subject to His parents.
Amen

The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity 18-25 January 2018

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS FOR THE EIGHT DAYS
Your right hand, O Lord,
glorious in power
(Ex 15:6)

Day 5:  Hark, the cry of my poor people from far and wide in the land!

Deuteronomy 1:19-35 The Lord God goes before you and carried you

Psalm 145:9-20 The Lord upholds all who are falling

James 1:9-11 The rich will disappear like a flower in the field

Luke 18:35-43 Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!

The Caribbean economies have traditionally been based on the production of raw materials for the European market and so have never been self-sustaining.   As a consequence, borrowing on the international market became important for development.   The requirements of such borrowing impose a reduction of spending on transport, education, health and other public services, which impacts most severely on the poor.   The Caribbean Conference of Churches has launched an initiative to address the current debt crisis in the region and through their international networks to come to the aid of the poor.

Reflection

We can imagine the noise of the crowd as Jesus enters Jericho.   Many voices shout down the cry of the blind beggar.   He is a distraction and an embarrassment.   But through all this tumult Jesus hears the blind man’s voice, just as God always hears the cries of the poor in the Hebrew Scriptures.  The Lord who upholds the falling not only hears, he responds.   Thereby, the beggar’s life is radically transformed.

The disunity of Christians can become part of the world’s tumult and chaos.   Like the arguing voices outside Jericho, our divisions can drown out the cry of the poor.  However, when we are united we become more fully Christ’s presence in the world, better able to hear, listen and respond.   Rather than increasing the volume of discord, we are able to truly listen and so discern the voices that most need to be heard.

Prayer

Loving God,
You lift up the poor and distressed
and restore their dignity.
Hear now our cries for the poor of our world,
restore their hope and lift them up,
that all Your people may be one.
This we pray in Jesus name.

Amen.

The right hand of God
is lifting in our land,
lifting the fallen one by one;
each one is known by name,
and rescued now from shame,
by the lifting of the right hand of God.DAY 5 - 22 January 2018 - OCTAVE OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY 2018 - 18-25 JAN

“Make no mistake, my brothers, if anyone joins a schismatic he will not inherit God’s Kingdom.   If anyone walks in the way of heresy, he is out of sympathy with the Passion.   Be careful, then, to observe a single Eucharist.   For there is one flesh of our Lord, Jesus Christ and one cup of His blood that makes us one and one altar, just as there is one bishop along with the presbytery and the deacons, my fellow slaves.   In that way whatever you do is in line with God’s will.”………………St Ignatius of Antioch

LET US PRAY:

Glorious St Paul,
your conversion is a powerful witness to the world
that God loves us and does not give up on us,

Novena to St Francis de Sales
Day EIGHT – 22 January

“One of the greatest proofs of love that Jesus displayed on the cross was putting up with the imperfections of His neighbour.   There He showed us that He has a heart that loves us tenderly and watches over us kindly.   He even showed His love for those who put Him to death.   In those dire moments the Saviour expressed thoughts of love even for his executioners, pardoning them in the very act of sinning!   How petty-minded we are when we cannot bring ourselves to forget some injury received, even after a long time!   Whoever sincerely pardons another calls down abundant blessings and perfectly imitates Christ.” (St Francis de Sales Spiritual Treatises IV; O. (1761-1850) Priest, Apostle of Mary and Founder of the “Society of Mary or Marianists”

There is a certain genius that comes from the faith and we saw it in our own day in St Mother Teresa.   The saints tend to tackle great and difficult things and accomplish wonders because they did NOT and do NOT depend on their OWN strength and effort. They KNOW that all things are possible ONLY with and in God – they take Him at His word – they ask for miracles and receive them!
They are never disappointed – this is the genius of faith!

Thought for the Day – 22 January – The Memorial of St Vincent of Saragossa (Died 304) – Deacon and Martyr – The Protomartyr of Spain

From a sermon by Saint Augustine  (354-430)

Father & Doctor of the Church

“To you has been granted in Christ’s behalf not only that you should believe in Him but also that you should suffer for Him.   Vincent had received both these gifts and held them as his own.   For how could he have them if he had not received them?   And he displayed his faith in what he said, his endurance in what he suffered.   No one ought to be confident in his own strength when he undergoes temptation.   For whenever we endure evils courageously, our long-suffering comes from Him,Christ.   He once said to His disciples: “In this world you will suffer persecution,” and then, to allay their fears, He added, “but rest assured, I have conquered the world.”

There is no need to wonder then, my dearly beloved brothers, that Vincent conquered in Him who conquered the world.   It offers temptation to lead us astray;  it strikes terror into us to break out spirit.    Hence if our personal pleasures do not hold us captive and if we are not frightened by brutality, then the world is overcome.   At both of these approaches Christ rushes to our aid and the Christian is not conquered.”

St Vincent of Saragossa, pray for us!

Prayer of St Vincent of Saragossa (Died 304)

Everlasting God,
to whom all hidden things
are revealed,
who sent into the world
Your Only Begotten Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
conceived through the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
that He might take on Himself
the punishment of our sins
and by His resurrection,
snatch us from the gates of hell,
grant to our hearts
such steadfastness of faith
that confessing Christ, Your Son,
we may not perish
but may be joined to Him
in the confession
of Your Holy Name.

Our Morning Offering – 22 January – The Memorial of St Vincent Pallotti (1795-1850)

Prayer of St Vincent Pallotti

My God, in every moment
You nourish me with Your Wisdom
and You destroy my ignorance.
You nourish me
with Your inaccessible Light
and You destroy all my shadows.
You nourish me
with Your infinite Perfection
and you destroy my life
which is a monstrosity of imperfections.
You nourish me with Your infinite Being
and you destroy my brutish life,
my loathsome self, a sinful man
and by a miracle of Your Mercy,
even though I have merited infinite times.
to lose God forever, God Himself,
with all of His Nature,
Person and Attributes
made Himself all mine,
He becomes my nourishment
and He nourishes me always,
so as to transform me into Himself
and make me one with Him.
Therefore, I am all in God
and God is all in me
and with His eternal nature
He brings me to all times
and in His immensity,
He brings me to all places
and I experience myself as eternal
and am immersed in Him.
Oh Wondrous God, oh Infinite Mercy.

Saint of the Day – 22 January – St Vincent Pallotti (1795-1850)

Saint of the Day – 22 January – St Vincent Pallotti (1795-1850) Priest, Missionary, Founder of the Pallottine Fathers and the Pallottine Missionary Sisters, Marian devotee, Apostle of Charity and Evangelisation  – known as “second St. Philip Neri.” (21 April 1795 in Rome, Italy – 22 January 1850 in Rome, Italy from a severe cold (he probably caught the fatal illness on a cold rainy night when he gave his cloak to a beggar who had none).    St Vincent was the founder of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate later to be known as the “Pious Society of Missions” (the Pallottines).   The original name was restored in 1947.   He is buried in the church of San Salvatore in Onda.   He is considered the forerunner of Catholic Action.   Patronages –  the Pallottines and Catholic Action and is the principal patron of the Pontifical Missionary Union of Clergy.header pallottist vincent pallotti - lovely

St Vincent  was an Italian ecclesiastic, born in Rome of a noble family.   This unpretentious man, Saint Vincent Pallotti, who out of respect for God omnipresent always went bareheaded, is one of the glories of the Catholic clergy, the pillars of the Church in troublesome times and the successful apostles of the people.

From earliest childhood he evinced tender love for the Blessed Mother of God and the decree on the heroic nature of his virtues emphasises the following facts:  “He possessed an exceptional love for poverty and penance and was therefore especially devoted to St Francis of Assisi.   Because various obstacles were in the way of his entering the First Order, he desired at least to belong to the Third Order.   It was his constant endeavour to imitate and venerate St Francis.”   Vincent became a Tertiary in the Franciscan church of Aracoeli on 29 November 1816. saint-vincent-pallotti-terezia-sedlakova-wutzay

A contemporary of Cardinal Newman’s and the Cure of Ars’, St Vincent Pallotti was a very modern saint who organised so many remarkable pastoral programs that he is considered the forerunner of Catholic Action.   He was a man of great ideas and great vision and was able to inspire others to tackle great things.   He is the founder of the Pallottine Fathers and the Pallottine Missionary Sisters;  however, this was but the tip of the iceberg of his accomplishments.   He left behind schools, guilds and institutes that carried the Catholic mission into the very heart of contemporary society.

He was born in Rome in 1795 and began studies for the priesthood very early.   Although he was very bright, he was not attracted by studies, even though he was ordained a priest at twenty-three and earned a doctorate in theology soon afterward.   He was given an assistant professorship at the Sapienza University but resigned it soon after to devote himself to pastoral work.   With prayer and penance, with his labours in the pulpit and the confessional, with his efforts on behalf of the sick and the endangered and especially on behalf of young clerics in the Roman seminary, he did a measureless amount of good.  During the cholera plague in 1837, Pallotti constantly endangered his life in ministering to the stricken.   In fact, it is well known that the saint often bi-located so as to be able to reach more souls when necessary.pallotti_jub5ast vincent pallotti - large

Before long, his zeal was known all over Rome.   He organised schools for shoemakers, tailors, coachmen, carpenters and gardeners so that they could better work at their trade, as well as evening classes for young farmers and unskilled workers.   He soon became known as a “second St. Philip Neri.”   He gave away his books, his possessions, and even his clothes to the poor and once dressed up as an old woman to hear the confession of a man who threatened “to kill the first priest who came through the door.”

In 1835, he founded his two congregations and was instrumental in the founding of a missionary order in England and several colleges for the training of missionaries.

On 14 January 1840, St Vincent celebrated Mass before the miraculous image of the Mother Most Admirable at the convent of Santa Trinitá dei Monti.   As he was leaving, he told Mother Makrina, a Russian Nun, that this would be the last Mass he said there.   Two days later he took ill at the home of James Salvati.   He was diagnosed with pleurisy. Giving away his cape to a cold pauper during the Octave apparently brought on the illness.   Thin cassocks just aren’t warm enough in January, even in Rome.

St Vincent’s death was the kind of death we should all pray to have.   He received the Last Rites, reciting the words with the priest administering it.   He blessed his little community and encouraged them to perseverance.  “Do you know what a beautiful feast there is tomorrow? It is the wedding feast of the Mother of God, and there will be great joy in heaven tomorrow.”   He was referring to the Feast of the Espousals of our Lady on 23 January of special significance to him because he was mystically wedded to that great Spouse.   His spiritual sons tried to induce him to stay in this life, after all, he had cured so many others. “My God, my God! Please, please, let me go, to wherever God wills!” he said.   He fell further into the bed and repeated, “Please, please, let me go, to wherever God wills!”   Half an hour later, after once again receiving sacramental absolution, he died.

He was only fifty-five but God glorified His humble servant by the gift of miracles both during his lifetime and after his death in 1850.   There was a strange and marvellous scent, a heavenly perfume, that was noted about the saints body and in his room at the time of his death.  That scent lingered in the room in which he had died for a month, even through the window to the room was left open.   St Vincent Pallotti was comparatively young when he was called to eternity, but in that short span he had accumulated a wealth of merits.   He was beatified in 1950 and canonised by St Pope John XXIII in 1963.

The body of Saint Vincent Pallotti was exhumed in 1906 and 1950, and his body was found to be completely incorrupt.   His body is enshrined in the church of San Salvatore in Onda, in Rome, where it can be seen.

During the Christmas Season, a nativity scene that Saint Vincent made himself is put on display at the Vatican, in the Basilica’s square, before the Christmas tree.   Vincent promoted the celebration of the Octave of the Epiphany as an act of unity with his Orthodox brethren who celebrated Christmas on that day.

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS FOR THE EIGHT DAYS
Your right hand, O Lord,
glorious in power
(Ex 15:6)

Day 4: Hope and Healing

Isaiah 9:2-7a His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace

Psalm 34:1-14 Seek peace, and pursue it

Revelation 7:13-17 God will wipe away every tear from their eyes

John 14:25-27 Peace I leave with you

Within the Caribbean, violence is a problem to which the churches are called to respond. There is an alarmingly high rate of murder, much of which stems from domestic abuse, gang warfare and other forms of criminality. There is also a rising rate of self-harm and suicide in some parts of the region.

Reflection

The kingdom which God promised, the kingdom which Jesus proclaimed and made manifest in his ministry, is a kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. What does this Good News mean for those trapped in the darkness of violence? In the prophet’s vision, light shone on those who lived in a land of deep darkness. But how can Christians bring the light of Jesus to those living in the darkness of domestic and gang violence? What sense of hope can Christians offer? It is a sad reality that division among Christians is a counter-sign, which hampers the communication of hope.

However, the quest for peace and reconciliation between the different churches and confessions is the opposite of that. When Christians strive for unity in a world of conflict, they offer the world a sign of reconciliation. Christians who refuse to enter a logic of privilege and status, who refuse to demean others and their communities, give witness to the peace of God’s kingdom, where the Lamb guides the saints to springs of the water of life. This is a peace the world needs, and one which brings healing and comfort to those afflicted by violence.

Prayer

God of all comfort and hope,
your resurrection defeated the violence of the cross.
As Your people,
may we be a visible sign
that the violence of the world will be overcome.
This we pray in the name of our risen Lord.

Amen.

Novena to St Paul in preparation for the Feast of The Conversion of St Paul on 25 January

Day SIX – 21 January

Various daily acts cause our conversion and ultimately our sanctification to grow: examining our conscience and admitting our faults; undertaking works of penance and reconciliation; receiving the correction others give us with an open and humble heart; reaching out to the poor; standing up for what is right and just; accepting the suffering and persecution that come our way; desiring to better our life (see CCC1435).

LET US PRAY:

Glorious St Paul,
your conversion is a powerful witness to the world
that God loves us and does not give up on us,
no matter how far we stray.
Help me to live a life of ongoing conversion.
True conversion means converting my life to the
design of God, the plan He has for me right now.
Pray for me, that I may be filled with passion
for the evangelisation of all those around me,
that my life may be a beacon of the light of Christ.
May the witness of my life inspire other sinners to conversion.
May faith move me to believe that God can
and will change the things in me that seem impossible to rectify.
In this confidence, I entrust to you, St Paul,

Novena to St Francis de Sales
Day SEVEN – 21 January

“Our intellect is ordinarily full of ideas, opinions and considerations suggested by self-love.   This is the root of many conflicts within the soul, putting before us all sorts of reasons dictated by human prudence to justify our pretensions.   People who make use of this false prudence, instead of enlightening their intellect, obscure it.   They reject advice given to them and let those reasons prevail in their minds which support their own opinions, even wrong ones.   Make use of the virtue of prudence because it is good but make good use of it.   Employ it only rarely, with simplicity and solely for the glory of God.” (St Francis de Sales – Sermons 30; O. IX, pp. 297-298)

O blessed Francis de Sales,
who on earth did excel in a life of virtue,
especially in the love of God and neighbour,
I earnestly ask you to take me under your compassionate care and protection.
Obtain for me conversion of mind and heart.
Grant that all people, especially
……………………………..
(names of those whom you wish to include)
may experience the depth of God’s redeeming and healing love.
Encouraged by your prayers and example,
help me to live fully my sacred dignity with the hope of experiencing my sacred destiny:
eternal life with God.

O God, for the salvation of all, You desired that St. Francis de Sales—
preacher, missionary, confessor, bishop and founder—
should befriend many along the road to salvation.
Mercifully grant that we,
infused with the humility and gentleness of his charity,
guided by his wisdom and sharing in his spirit may experience eternal life.

Sunday Reflection – 21 January 2018 – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Sunday Reflection – 21 January 2018 – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Fr Raneiro Cantalamessa OFM “This is My Body”the eucharist is the hope - st saturninus - 21 jan 2018

“What the Sunday celebrations of the Eucharist represented for Christians at the time of the persecutions is shown in a moving way in the acts of the North African Martyrs, Saturninus and companions, who died under the Diocletian persecution in 305.*
They were the first martyrs of the Eucharist. Their words and example might constitute a strong call and the starting point for an examination of conscience for us modern Christians.
To the Roman judge who accused them of having transgressed the emperor’s order not to hold meetings and hand out the Scriptures, the martyrs responded one after the other:

” A Christian cannot live without the Eucharist and the Eucharist without the Christians.   Don’t you know that the Christian exists for the Eucharist and the Eucharist for the Christian?”
“Yes, I participated with the brothers in the meeting, I celebrated the mysteries of the Lord and I have with me, written in my heart, the divine Scriptures… The Eucharist is the hope and salvation of Christians.”**

* Acta ss. Saturnini et sociorum martyrum (ca.304), 9, 11 (ed PT Ruinart, Acta martyrum 1959). A phrase of these acts: “Sine dominico non possumus” is sometimes translated: ‘We cannot live without Sunday.’ A suggestive translation but unfortunately inexact. The neuter noun dominicum indicates the ‘celebration of the Lord’s Mysteries’, ‘the Lord’s Banquet’, namely ‘the Lord’s Supper’ of 1 Cor 11:20.
The term recurs with such meaning in the African writers of the time – Tertullian, Ad Uxorem, 2,4; Cyprian, De opere et eleemosynis, 15.
The accent is therefore on the Eucharist, not on Sunday, the latter is included indirectly, inasmuch as the Lord’s Supper, was celebrated as a rule and for a certain period exclusively, on Sunday. The complete meaning of dominicum is, therefore, that of “Sunday celebration of the Lord’s supper.”
** Acta, 10-13.

Thought for the Day – 21 January – The Memorial of St Agnes (c 291- c 304) Virgin and Martyr

One of the most beloved of female saints, Saint Agnes is renowned for her virginity and for keeping her faith under torture.   A girl of only 12 or 13 at the time of her death, Saint Agnes is one of eight female saints commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass (the First Eucharistic Prayer).

As Pope John Paul II said to the young people, they should not wait until they are older to become saints.   For the World Youth Day, the Holy Father proposed nine “patron saints” — nine Saints and Blesseds who died at a very young age, like St Thérèse of Lisieux and Blessed Kateri Tekawitha, who died at the age of 24.   One of these nine patrons is St Agnes, who died around 304 at the age of around 13.   She declared that she would never accept any spouse except Jesus Christ.

“I do not think that the world has radically changed since the time that Agnes lived her short life in the world, some nineteen centuries ago.   It is always the same strong and greedy world that we know today.   The same world with three heads, which the martyrs of the first three centuries of Christianity had to face, still hinders the road to Heaven in our twentieth century:  pride, impurity and the thirst for power stand armed against the Kingdom of Christ,

“Times are bad.”   We, Catholics, are living in a time of paganism.   Our governments and society are about as pagan as the governments and society in the times of paganism in Rome.   Many do not adore the true God anymore; they rather adore at the altars of Venus, or of Moloch, or of some other false deity of the human passions, just like the Romans did.” (Bishop William Adrian of Nashville 1970)

St Agnes’ life, heroism and death inspire us to be pure also.   Her name means pure in Greek and lamb in Latin.  She is a symbol that holiness does not depend on length of years, experience, or human effort.   It is a gift God offers to all.

BIBLICAL REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS FOR THE EIGHT DAYS
Your right hand, O Lord,

(Ex 15:6)

Day 3:  Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

Exodus 3:4-10  God frees those who are in human bondage

Psalm 24:1-6  Lord, we are the people who seek your face

1 Corinthians 6:9-20  Therefore glorify God in your body

Matthew 18:1-7  Woe to the one by whom the stumbling block comes!

Many Christian churches in the Caribbean share a concern about the issue of pornography, especially via the internet.   Pornography has destructive consequences for human dignity, particularly for children and young people.   Like slavery, it commodifies human beings, ensnares those addicted to it and damages wholesome loving relationships.

Reflection

The book of Exodus demonstrates God’s concern for people in human bondage.   God’s revelation to Moses at the burning bush was a powerful declaration of his will to free his people.   God observed their misery, heard their cry and so came to deliver them. God still hears the cry of those who are subject to enslavement today and wills to deliver them.   While sexuality is a gift of God for human relationships and the expression of intimacy, the misuse of this gift through pornography enslaves and devalues both those caught up in producing it and those who consume it.   God is not impervious to their plight and Christians are called to be similarly concerned.

St Paul writes that we are called to give glory to God in our own bodies, which means that every part of our lives, including our relationships, can and should be an offering pleasing to God.   Christians must work together for the kind of society that upholds human dignity and does not put a stumbling block before any of God’s little ones but, rather, enables them to live in the freedom which is God’s will for them.

Prayer

By Your heavenly grace, O God,
restore us in mind and body,
create in us a clean heart and a pure mind
that we may give glory to Your Name.

May the churches attain unity of purpose
for the sanctification of Your people,
through Jesus Christ
who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
for ever and ever.

Amen.

Novena to St Francis de Sales
Day SIX – 20 January

“Do not pay any attention to the kind of work you do but rather to the honour that it brings to God, even though it may seem quite trivial.   Desire only to do the Divine Will, following Divine Providence, which is the disposition of Divine Wisdom.   In a word, if your works are pleasing to God and recognised as such, that is all that matters.   Work hard every day at increasing your purity of heart, which consists in appraising things and weighing them in the balance of God’s will.” (St Francis de Sales Letters 280; O. XIII, p. 53)

preacher, missionary, confessor, bishop and founder—
should befriend many along the road to salvation.
Mercifully grant that we, infused with the humility and gentleness of his charity,
guided by his wisdom and sharing in his spirit may experience eternal life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Thought for the Day – 20 January – The Memorial of St Sebastian, Martyr (Died C 288)

By contemplating death, we focus our minds on how better to live, so that when the moment comes–as it does for all of us–we need not be afraid or ashamed of our nakedness in the sight of God, as our first parents were, in the rebellion of original sin, which brought death into the world.
As the ancient saying commands us, memento mori, remember that you must die.
How we live our lives, will determine, whether we will join with the saints, in the victory of Christ over death.   Indeed, the saints are excellent examples for us, of how to live–and how to die–with grace, love and forgiveness.
