Quote/s of the Day – 2 December – The Memorial of Bl John van Ruysbroeck (c 1293-1382)

“Even as God is common to all,
the sun shines upon all trees.”
(The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage)

“Knowledge of ourselves teaches us
whence we come,
where we are
and whither we are going.
We come from God
and we are in exile.”
[Ruysbroeck the Admirable (1925)]

“God is more interior to us
than we are to ourselves.
His acting in us,
is nearer and more inward,
than our own actions.
God works in us,
from inside outwards,
creatures work on us,
from the outside.”
(Spiritual Espousals)even as god, god is more interior, knowledge of ourselves - 2 dec 2018 bl john van ruysbroeck

“If we would God discern
The world we must despise,
His love and hate must learn,
See all things with His eyes.
And we must self forgo
If God we would attain,
His grace must in us grow
And ease us from all pain.
So shall we sing His praise
And be at one with Him,
In peace our voices raise
In the celestial hymn,
That with quadruple harmony
And all mellifluous melody,
In Heaven resounds eternally.
(The Seven Steps of the Ladder of Spiritual Love)

“We have found the Messiah”…
Andrew’s words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing
for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to His appearing
from heaven, rejoicing when He does appear

One Minute Reflection – 28 November – Today’s Gospel:  Luke 21:12–19, Wednesday of the Thirty Fourth week in Ordinary Time, Year B and the Memorial of St Catherine Labouré DC (1806-1876)

“But not a hair of your head will perish.”...Luke 21:18

REFLECTION – ” In difficult times, one must believe that Jesus is before us and does not cease to accompany His disciples.   Persecution is not in contradiction to the Gospel but rather is part of it.   As if to say that none of man’s suffering, not even that which is most minute and hidden, is invisible to the eyes of God.   God sees and certainly protects and He will give His redemption.   There is in fact in our midst, Someone who is stronger than evil.   Christians therefore, must always be found, on the “opposite side” of the world, that chosen by God – not persecutors but persecuted, not arrogant but meek, not charlatans but submissive to the truth, not imposters but honest men and women.”…Pope Francis General Audience, 28 June 2017but not a hair of your head - luke 21 18-in difficult times - pope fancis 28 nov 2018

PRAYER – Shed Your clear light on our hearts O Lord, so that walking continually in the way of Your commandments, we may never be afraid, never be deceived or misled but by Your strength, stand firm in our faith.   For Your Son, walks before us, beside us and behind us.   The Holy Spirit of Your love fills us.   Let nothing put us to shame  . Grant that by the prayers of St Catherine Labouré and all Your saints, we may be strengthened for the journey.   Through our Lord Jesus, in the Holy Spirit, God eternally and forever, amen.st catherine laboure pray for us - 3 - 28nov2018

One Minute Reflection – 26 November – Today’s Gospel: Luke 21:1-4

One Minute Reflection – 26 November – Today’s Gospel: Luke 21:1-4 – Monday of the Thirty Fourth Week in Ordinary Time, Year B

He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury and he saw a poor widow, put in two copper coins.   And he said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them, for they all contributed out of their abundance but she out of her poverty, put in all the living that she had.”…Luke 21:1-4

REFLECTION – “However, in the mystical sense, the woman who placed two small coins in the treasury, is not to be forgotten.   Great indeed is that woman who was worthy to be preferred before everyone else according to the divine judgement!   Might it not be she who has drawn the two Testaments out of her faith for the help of all humankind?   Therefore, no one has done more than she and no one has been able to equal the greatness of her gift, since she joined faith to mercy.   And you, too, whoever you are…, do not hesitate to bring to the treasury, two coins, full of faith and grace.”…St Ambrose (340-397) Father & Doctorluke 21 1-2 - he looked up and saw the rich - might it not be she who has drawn the two testaments - st ambrose - 26 nov 2018

“In a certain sense the Church is a widow somewhat, because she is waiting for her Bridegroom to return… Of course, she has her Spouse in the Eucharist, in the Word of God, in the poor but she is waiting for Him to return.   This woman wasn’t important, no one knew her.   Nothing.   She did not shine of her own light.
Likewise, the great virtue of the Church is not shining of her own light but rather reflecting the light that comes from her Spouse.   Especially since over the centuries, when the Church wanted to have her own light, she was wrong.   The Church receives light from there, from the Lord and all the services we do in the Church, help her to receive that light.   When a service is lacking this light, it’s not good because it causes the Church to become rich, or powerful, or to seek power, or to lose her way, as has happened so many times in history, it happens in our life when we want to have another light – our own light, which is not really that of the Lord.   When the Church is humble and poor and even when the Church confesses her misfortunes — we all have them — the Church is faithful.
Let us pray to this widow who is surely in heaven that she may teach us to be like the Church, renouncing all we have and keeping nothing for ourselves but instead giving all for the Lord and for our neighbour.   Always humble and without boasting of having our own light but “always seeking the light which comes from the Lord.”…Pope Francis (Santa Marta, 24 November 2014)this poor widow - luke 21 3-4 - let us pray to this widow pope francis 26 nov 2018

PRAYER – God our Father, You give us a share in the one bread and the one cup and make us one in Christ.   Help us to live as Your children and by our lives to bring Your salvation and joy to all the world.   May the Holy Spirit fill us with all His gifts and virtues so that we may await the coming of Your Son, guided by His Light and may Mary, the blessed Virgin, accompany us, guarding and giving us her prayerful help.   Through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.blessed virgin mary mother of god pray for us 26 nov 2018

One Minute Reflection – 17 November – Today’s Gospel: Luke 18:1–8 – Saturday of the Thirty Second week in Ordinary Time, Year B and The Memorial of St Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231)

“When the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?”...Luke 18:8

REFLECTION – “What more powerful incentive to prayer could be proposed to us than the parable of the unjust judge?   An unprincipled man, without fear of God or regard for other people, that judge nevertheless ended by granting the widow’s petition.   No kindly sentiment moved him to do so;  he was rather worn down by her pestering.   Now if a man can grant a request even when it is odious to him to be asked, how can we be refused by the one who urges us to ask?   Having persuaded us, therefore, by a comparison of opposites that “we ought always to pray and never lose heart,” the Lord goes on to put the question:  “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, do you think he will find faith on earth?”
Where there is no faith, there is no prayer.   Who would pray for something he did not believe in?   So when the blessed Apostle exhorts us to pray he begins by declaring: “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”   But to show that faith is the source of prayer and the stream will not flow if its springs are dried up, he continues: “But how can people call on him in whom they do not believe?” (Rom 10:13-14).   We must believe, then, in order to pray and we must ask God, that the faith enabling us to pray, may not fail.   Faith gives rise to prayer and this prayer obtains, an increase of faith.”…St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctor – Sermon 115, 1 ; PL 38, 655luke 18 8 - when the son of man comes - we must believe then, in order to pray - st augustine - 17 nov 2018

Thought for the Day – 10 November – Christian, Remember Your Dignity by St Pope Leo the Great

Thought for the Day – 10 November – Christian, Remember Your Dignity by St Pope Leo the Great

Today we celebrate the feast day of Pope Saint Leo the Great (c 400-461).   St Leo is referred to by many names, including “Doctor of Doctrine” and “Doctor of Unity of the Church.”   He is the first pope to be referred to by the title “Great” and the first pope made Doctor of the Church.   His writings, unifying doctrine and peacemaking, continue to inspire and instruct us today in the ways of the faith.   Below, an excerpt from a homily, encouraging Christians to take heed of the joy of Christ and exhorts them to live in freedom and dignity of the Incarnation!

Christian, Remember Your Dignity!

Dearly beloved, today our Saviour is born, let us rejoice.   Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life.   The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us joy with the promise of eternal happiness.
No one is shut out from this joy, all share the same reason for rejoicing.   Our Lord, victor over sin and death, finding no man free from sin, came to free us all.   Let the saint rejoice as he sees the palm of victory at hand.   Let the sinner be glad as he receives the offer of forgiveness.   Let the pagan take courage as he is summoned to life.
In the fullness of time, chosen in the unfathomable depths of God’s wisdom, the Son of God took for Himself our common humanity in order to reconcile it with its creator.   He came to overthrow the devil, the origin of death, in that very nature by which He had overthrown mankind.
And so at the birth of our Lord the angels sing in joy – Glory to God in the highest and they proclaim peace to men of good will as they see the heavenly Jerusalem being built from all the nations of the world.   When the angels on high are so exultant at this marvellous work of God’s goodness, what joy should it not bring to the lowly hearts of men?
Beloved, let us give thanks to God the Father, through His Son, in the Holy Spirit, because in His great love for us He took pity on us and when we were dead in our sins He brought us to life with Christ, so that in Him we might be a new creation.   Let us throw off our old nature and all its ways and, as we have come to birth in Christ, let us renounce the works of the flesh.
Christian, remember your dignity and now that you share in God’s own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition   Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member.   Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God’s kingdom.
Through the sacrament of baptism you have become a temple of the Holy Spirit.   Do not drive away so great a guest by evil conduct and become again a slave to the devil, for your liberty was bought by the blood of Christ.

Thought for the Day – 7 November – The Memorial of St Willibrord (c 658 – 739) “Apostle to the Frisians”

The king demanded to know why he had violated their sacred places and insulted their god.   The herald of truth answered him with steady courage:

“O king, you do not adore God but the devil.   He has foully deluded you so that he can thrust your soul into everlasting fire.   For there is no God but one.   He created sky, earth, sea and everything that is in them.   Whoever worships Him with true faith will have life forever.   I urge you finally to renounce that foolish delusion of your ancestors, and to believe in the one Almighty God and Our Lord Jesus Christ.   I call on you to be baptised in the font of life and wash away all your sins.   Then with all wickedness and wrongdoing cast away from you, you may live as a new man in all reasonableness, righteousness and holiness.   If you do this you will win an eternal life of glory with God and His saints.   But if instead you reject the path of salvation, then be most assured that you will suffer eternal tortures and hellish flames along with the devil to whom you pay court.”

One Minute Reflection – 4 November – Today’s Gospel: Mark 12:28b-34 -Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B and the Memorial of St Charles Borromeo (1538-1584) and St Felix of Valois (1127-1212)

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’   There is no other commandment greater than these.”...Mark 12:30-31

REFLECTION – “You cannot love God without loving your neighbour and you cannot love your neighbour without loving God.   In effect, the visible sign a Christian can show, in order to witness to his love for God to the world and to others, to his family, is the love he bears for his brothers, is the love of his people.   The Commandment to love God and neighbour is the first, not because it is at the top of the list of Commandments.   Jesus does not place it at the pinnacle but at the centre, because it is from the heart that everything must go out and to which everything must return and refer.
In the Old Testament, the requirement to be holy, in the image of God who is holy, included the duty to care for the most vulnerable people, such as the stranger, the orphan and the widow (cf. Ex 22:20-26).   Jesus brings this Covenant law to fulfilment, He who unites in Himself, in His flesh, divinity and humanity, a single mystery of love.
Now, in the light of this Word of Jesus, love is the measure of faith and faith is the soul of love.   We can no longer separate a religious life, a pious life, from service to brothers and sisters, to the real brothers and sisters that we encounter.”…Pope Francis – Angelus, 26 October 2014)you shall love the lord your god - mark 12 30-31 - in the light of this word of jesus - pope francis - 4 nov 2018

PRAYER – God power and mercy, by whose grace, Your people give You praise and worthy service, help us to see Your face in our neighbour.   To love them all as we love You.   Save us from faltering on our way and grant us the joys You have promised  . St Felix of Valois and St Charles Borromeo kindly assist our journey by your prayers. Through Jesus our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.st felix of valois pray for us - 4 nov 2018

that it prays for those who have died
in the communion of the Body and Blood of Christ,
when they are commemorated
in their own place in the sacrifice itself
and the sacrifice is offered,
also in memory of them, on their behalf.”

“What great power the holy souls in purgatory
have over the heart of God!
If we realised this fact

that we can gain through their intercession,
these souls would not be so forgotten.”

“If today we are remembering
these brothers and sisters of
ours who lived before us and are
now in heaven, they are there
because they were washed in the

and this hope does not disappoint.
If we live our lives with the Lord,
He will never disappoint us.”

One Minute Reflection – 29 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

One Minute Reflection – 29 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 13:10-17 – Monday of the Thirtieth week in Ordinary Time, Year B and the Memorial of St Gaetano Errico (1791-1860)

” And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?”…Luke 13:16

REFLECTION – “The whole human race, like this woman, was bent over and bowed down to the ground.   Someone already understands these enemies.   He cries out against them and says to God, “They have bowed my soul down.”   The devil and his angels have bowed the souls of men and women down to the ground.   He has bent them forward to be intent on temporary and earthly things and has stopped them from seeking the things that are above.
Since that is what the Lord says about the woman whom Satan had bound for eighteen years, it was now time for her to be released from her bondage on the sabbath day.  Quite unjustly, they criticised Him for straightening her up.   Who were these, except people bent over themselves?   Since they quite failed to understand the very things God had commanded, they regarded them with earthbound hearts.   They used to celebrate the sacrament of the sabbath in a literal, material manner and did not notice its spiritual meaning.” … St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctor (Sermon 162)and out not this woman, a daughter of abraham luke 13 16 the whole human race like this woman was bent over- st augustine 29 oct 2018

PRAYER – Almighty Lord and God, protect us by Your power throughout the course of this day, even as You have enabled us to begin it – do not let us turn aside to any sin but, let our every thought, word and deed aim at doing what is pleasing in Your sight.   Grant we pray, that by the prayers of St Gaetano Errico, we may strive to seek only to please the Sacred Heart of Your Son and the loving Heart of His Mother.   Through Jesus our Lord, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.st gaetano errico pray for us 29 oct 2018

Fear not, you are of more value than many sparrows.”...Luke 12:7

REFLECTION – “Strain not after tears, strive not for sentiments of devotion, do not force your heart.   Rest rather in interior solitude.   Dwell therein quietly, waiting until God’s will be accomplished in you.   When it shall please Him to send you tears, oh, how sweet will those tears be, for is not your impatience that has secured them:  they are the fruits of humility and of peace.   On your part, then, you must receive them with the deepest self-effacement, allowing God to work in you.   Note well, that if ever you fancy this desire or the securing of these affections to be in any measure due to yourself, you will infallibly expose yourself to the losing of them.”…St Peter of Alcantara – Treatise on Prayer and Meditation’

PRAYER – My Lord and patient God, help me to practice patience in doing good.   No matter what may occur, allow me to face each day with quiet courage and without complaint, knowing You are always at my side and that all is part of Your divine plan.  I pray for total abandonment to Your Will.   Grant that by the intercession of St Peter of Alcantara, we may grow in trust, leaving all in our Father’s hands.   We make our prayer through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.

Thought for the Day – 15 October – The Memorial of St Teresa of Jesus/Avila (1515-1582) Doctor of the Church “Doctor of Prayer”

Excerpt of Pope Benedict’s Catechesis
on the Doctors of the Church
Wednesday, 2 February 2011

“It is far from easy to sum up in a few words Teresa’s profound and articulate spirituality.   I would like to mention a few essential points.   In the first place St Teresa proposes the evangelical virtues as the basis of all Christian and human life and in particular, detachment from possessions, that is, evangelical poverty and this concerns all of us;  love for one another as an essential element of community and social life; humility as love for the truth;  determination as a fruit of Christian daring;  theological hope, which she describes as the thirst for living water.   Then we should not forget the human virtues: affability, truthfulness, modesty, courtesy, cheerfulness, culture.

Secondly, St Teresa proposes a profound harmony with the great biblical figures and eager listening to the word of God.   She feels above all closely in tune with the Bride in the Song of Songs and with the Apostle Paul, as well as with Christ in the Passion and with Jesus in the Eucharist.   The Saint then stresses how essential prayer is.   Praying, she says, “means being on terms of friendship with God frequently conversing in secret with Him who, we know, loves us” (Vida 8, 5).  St Teresa’s idea coincides with Thomas Aquinas’ definition of theological charity as “amicitia quaedam hominis ad Deum”, a type of human friendship with God, who offered humanity His friendship first – it is from God that the initiative comes (cf. Summa Theologiae II-II, 23, 1).

Prayer is life and develops gradually, in pace with the growth of Christian life – it begins with vocal prayer, passes through interiorisation by means of meditation and recollection, until it attains the union of love with Christ and with the Holy Trinity. Obviously, in the development of prayer climbing to the highest steps does not mean abandoning the previous type of prayer.  Rather, it is a gradual deepening of the relationship with God that envelops the whole of life.

Dear brothers and sisters, St Teresa of Jesus is a true teacher of Christian life for the faithful of every time.   In our society, which all too often lacks spiritual values, St Teresa teaches us to be unflagging witnesses of God, of His presence and of His action.   She teaches us truly to feel this thirst for God that exists in the depths of our hearts, this desire to see God, to seek God, to be in conversation with Him and to be His friends.

This is the friendship we all need that we must seek anew, day after day.   May the example of this Saint, profoundly contemplative and effectively active, spur us too every day to dedicate the right time to prayer, to this openness to God, to this journey, in order to seek God, to see Him, to discover His friendship and so to find true life – indeed, many of us should truly say:  “I am not alive, I am not truly alive because I do not live the essence of my life”.

Therefore time devoted to prayer is not time wasted, it is time in which the path of life unfolds, the path unfolds to learning from God an ardent love for Him, for His Church and practical charity for our brothers and sisters.    Many thanks.”

You will receive everything, in that overflowing measure with which God gives His gifts.   You will receive everything. …. One Minute Reflection – 11 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 11:5–13 and the Memorial of St Pope John XXIII

One Minute Reflection – 11 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 11:5–13 – Thursday of the Twenty-seventh week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of St Pope John XXIII

“For everyone who asks, receives and he who seeks, finds and to him who knocks, it will be opened.”…Luke 11:10

REFLECTION – ” Now by asking, He means prayer but by seeking, zeal and anxiety, as He adds, seek and you shall find.   For those things which are sought require great care.   And this is particularly the case with God.   For there are many things which block up our senses.   As then we search for lost gold, so let us anxiously seek after God.   He shows also, that though He does not forthwith open the gates, we must yet wait.   Hence he adds, knock and it shall be opened to you, for if you continue seeking, you shall surely receive.   For this reason and as the door shut makes you knock, therefore He did not at once consent that you might entreat.
Or by the word knock perhaps he means seeking effectually, for one knocks with the hand but the hand is the sign of a good work.   Or these three may be distinguished in another way.   For it is the beginning of virtue to ask to know the way of truth.   But the second step is to seek how we must go by that way.   The third step is when a man has reached the virtue to knock at the door, that he may enter upon the wide field of knowledge.   All these things a man acquires by prayer  . Or to ask indeed, is to pray but to seek, is by good works to do things becoming our prayers.   And to knock is to continue in prayer without ceasing.”…St John Chrysostom (347-407) Father & Doctor of the Churchluke 11 10 - for everyone who asks receives - as then se search for lost gold - st john chrysostom - 11 oct 2018

PRAYER – Help us my Lord, to discern through prayer and meditation, what You truly want of us.   Then enable us to offer it to You and indeed to offer myself and all I have to You.   Teach us to listen that we might hear Your answers, teach us to wait in patience for that which we ask and to trust in Your answer and teach us to constantly knock at Your door in prayer.   May St John XXIII, pray for Holy Mother Church, pray for all the members of the Mystical Body, pray for our sons and daughters and for us all, pray for me!
