Our Morning Offering – 8 October – The 19th Sunday after Pentecost

An Act of Consecration to the Holy Trinity
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor of Charity

I vow and consecrate to God
all that is in me:
my memory and my actions
to God the Father;
my understanding
and my words
to God the Son;
my will and my thoughts
to God the Holy Ghost;
my heart, my body,
my tongue, my senses
and all my sorrows
to the Sacred Humanity of Jesus Christ,
“who was content to be betrayed
into the hands of wicked men
and to suffer the torment of the Cross..”
Amen

Saint of the Day – 8 October – Saint Ragenfrida Virgin, Abbess (Died 9th Century).

Saint of the Day – 8 October – Saint Ragenfrida Virgin, Abbess (Died 9th Century). Daughter of Adalbert, Count of Ostrevant and Regina, who is also remembered as a Saint. Patronage – of Denain, Northern France, where her Monastery was. Also known as – Ragenfréde, Ragenfreda, Rainfroy, Refroy, Reginfreda, Renfrida, Renfroie.

The Roman Martyrology: “In Denain in Hainault, in today’s France, Saint Ragenfrida, Abbess, who built a Monastery in this place with her assets, of which she was a worthy guide.

Ragenfrida was the Founder and Abbess of the Monastery of Denain, in the Diocese of Cambrai, as expressly recalled in a record from Charles the Bald (Charles II (823-877), King) dated 13 August 877. Even the Author of the Gesta Episcoporum Cameracemium, in 1041-1042, says that the blessed Ragenfrida had founded a Monastery in her region, located on the banks of the Escaut, in Denain and had become the Abbess of it. A little later, contrary to ancient documents, the Life of Saint Regina (our Saint’s mother), written on behalf of Abbess Fredessenda, declares that the Founders had been Adalbert, Count of Ostrevant and his wife, Regina.

Their marriage had been blessed with the birth of ten daughters (including Ragenfrida) and, in agreement with them, the two spouses had founded a Monastery in Denain, whose Church was dedicated to Our Lady. The ten virgins, however, to satisfy a greater desire for perfection, set out on a pilgrimage – five went to Jerusalem and died there, the other five reached Rome where they too were to find eternal rest, except for Ragenfrida who returned to Denain. During the absence of the pilgrims, Regina, their mother, had retreated to the Monastery because Adalbert had died (or, as a later version would say, with his consent) and she governed it until her death. She was succeeded by Ragenfrida.

The Monastery of Denain was founded, towards the end of the 8th Century but this date appears too late because the cult of Ragenfrida was already attested in the 9th Century. It seems that, at the beginning its inhabitants were Nuns who followed the Benedictine rule, although it has been wondered whether Denain was not instead a Monastery of Canonesses, as established in 816 by the Council of Aachen. However, later the community was made up of Canonesses and not Nuns. Canonesses, uUnlike Nuns, took no permanent vows and were not committed to a life of poverty, or to a common life for eating and sleeping. These ladies were usually Aritocrats of noble birth.

The elevation of the body of the holy Abbess took place already in 845, at the time of the blessed Ava, who, blind, had recovered her sight by praying on Ragenfrida’s tomb; after which, she gave all her goods to St Ragemfroda’s Monastery and consecrated herself to the Lor. Ava, having become Abbess, promoted the cult of our Saint. At the time of the destruction of the Monastery by the Normans, Ragenfrida’s Relics, sold by clerics greedy for money, were then recovered,, thanks to the cunning of a Nun and remained in Denain until 1793.

From the 9th Century St Ragenfrida had a celebration in calendars and sacramentaries and her name is found in the litanies of the same period on 8 October, in the Diocese of Cambrai and Tournai, as well as in the Abbey of St-Amand. She is venerated on the same date in Honnepel, a Town near Xanten, where the Monastery of Denain had properties and the same was true for Xanten. After the 13th Century, in Cologne, she had her Feast day, on 20 November. In Denain, of which the Saint was the main Patron, she was celebrated on 2 September and with a relatio corporis on 11 June. Ragenfrida’s memory is found in the Benedictine Martyrologies on 8 October.

Thought for the Day – 7 October – The Fifth Joyful Mystery – The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

Thought for the Day – 7 October – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

“Month of the Holy Rosary”
The Fifth Joyful Mystery
The Finding of Jesus in the Temple

“Mary and Joseph came, according to custom, to celebrate the feast of the Pasch in Jerusalem.
They took with them, Jesus, Who was now twelve years of age.
When the feast was over, the pilgrims came together to return to Nazareth.
As usual, they gathered in the temple to say a final prayer and then divided into two companies, one consisting of men, the other of women.
The children were assigned to either caravan.

At any rate, when the two groups came together for the night after a day’s journey, Mary and Joseph looked in vain for Jesus.
He could not be found in either caravan!
We can imagine how they suffered.
However, they returned without delay to Jerusalem to look for their Child.
They searched for three days.
At last, when they went into the Temple to pour out their troubles to God, they found Jesus, sitting among the doctors, who were amazed at the wisdom of His answers and of His questions.
There was joy and sorrow in Mary’s countenance as she regarded Him.
“Son,” she said gently. “why hast thou done so to us? Behold, in sorrow, thy father and I have been seeking thee.”
Jesus’ reply was also mild and at the same time, mysterious.
“How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?”

Then He returned with them to Nazareth, where He remained “subject to them.”
But His mother, we are told, “kept all these things carefully in her heart” (Cf Lk 2:41-51).

This Mystery of the Rosary is, at the same time, joyful and sorrowful.
We can learn a good deal by meditating on it.
We can admire the divine wisdom of Jesus, Who, even from childhood, desired to reveal a little of the truth and also His obedience to Mary and Joseph, until He reached thirty years of age.
We can admire, too, His hidden life in the workshop in Nazareth, interrupted only by this brief demonstration of His divinity and the anxiety of Mary and Joseph to find Jesus when they had lost Him, as well as their delight when He was restored to them.

If we should ever have the great misfortune of losing Jesus, let us have recourse at once, to Mary and Joseph, who lost Him without any fault on their part, searched anxiously for Him and did not rest, until they had found Him. Amen”

Quote/s of the Day – 7 October – Queen of the Holy Rosary!

Quote/s of the Day – 7 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary

Say the Rosary everyday
to obtain peace for the world.
And after each decade,
say the following prayer:
‘O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of Hell,
lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those in most need of Thy mercy.’

Our Lady of Fatima
1917

Queen of the Holy Rosary

Queen of the Holy Rosary!
Thee as our Queen we greet,
And lay our lowly, loving prayers
Like roses at thy feet.
Would that these blossoms of our souls
Were far more fair and sweet.

Queen of the Joyful Mysteries!
Glad news God’s envoy bore.
The Baptist’s mother thou didst tend;
Angels thy Babe adore,
Whom with two doves thou ransomest;
Lost, He is found once more.

Queen of the Dolorous Mysteries!
Christ ‘mid the olives bled,
Scourged at the pillar, crowned with thorns,
Beneath His Cross He sped
Up the steep hill and there once more
Thine arms embraced Him–dead!

Queen of the Glorious Mysteries!
Christ from the tomb has flown,
Has mounted to the highest heaven
And sent His Spirit down
And soon He raises thee on high
To wear thy heavenly crown.

Queen of the Holy Rosary!
We, too, have joys and woes.
May they, like thine, to triumph lead!
May labour earn repose,
And may life’s sorrows and life’s joys
In heavenly glory close.

One Minute Reflection – 7 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary – Proverbs 8:22-24, 32-35, Luke 1:26-38 Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

And Mary said: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word.” – Luke 1:38

REFLECTION – “You have heard, O Virgin, that you are to conceive and bring forth a Son and that this will not be through the power of man but, by the virtue of the Holy Spirit. The Angel awaits your reply, for it is time that he should return to God Who sent him. We, too, are waiting, O Lady, for a word of mercy, we, who are groaning under the sentence of condemnation. See, the price of our salvation is offered to you; if you consent, we shall at once be delivered. By the Eternal Word of God were we all created and behold, we will all die. By your brief answer, we shall be refreshed and recalled to life! …

Hasten, then, O Lady, to give your answer; hasten to speak the word so longed for by all on earth, in limbo and in Heaven. Yes, the King and Lord of all things, Who has “greatly desired your beauty” (Ps 44:12), desires, as eagerly, your word of consent by which He has purposed to save the world. He, Whom you pleased by your silence, will be yet more pleased by your reply. Hark! He calls to you from Heaven – “O most beautiful among women, let me hear your voice” (Sg 1:8; 2:14) … Answer the Angel quickly, then; yes, through the Angel give your consent to your God. Answer one syllable, receive the Word; utter your own word and conceive that which is Divine. Speak the word that is transitory and embrace the Word which is everlasting! …”

Behold,” she says, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to thy word.” – St Bernard (1091-1153) Father and Doctor of the Church (Homily 4 on the “Missus est” [He was sent] #8-9).

PRAYER – O God, Whose Only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has merited for us the grace of eternal salvation, grant, we beseech Thee, that, meditating on these Mysteries in the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

The Holy Rosary
By Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903)

Accept, mighty Maid, we beseech thee,
This prayer with its fragrance of flowers;
With one soul we seek thus to reach thee
And hail thee, God’s Mother and ours.

Thy heart is made glad by our praying;
Thy bounty is generous and wise;
Thy hands are enriched for conveying
What God’s tender Mercy supplies.

We kneel at thy Shrines in the Churches;
Oh, gently look down from above,
And welcome the heart that then searches
For worthy expressions of love.

Let others present precious caskets
Of gems, or heap Altars with gold;
Slight prayer-beads shall serve us for baskets
To bring thee the garland they hold.

With violets lowly we fashion
This wreath and with these combined
Red roses–our faith in the Passion
With Chastity’s lilies entwined.

Our minds, as the Mysteries vary,
Are active, our hands play their part
And always thy name, Holy Mary!
Oft-uttered, rejoices the heart.

Be with us, we trust thee to guide us
Through life and when labouring breath
At the last, seeks thine aid, be beside us
To help at the hour of our death.

Saint of the Day – 7 October – Saint Gerold of Cologne (c1201-1241) Layman, Pilgrim.

Saint of the Day – 7 October – Saint Gerold of Cologne (c1201-1241) Layman Pilgrim. Born in Cologne, Germany and died in Cremona, Italy by being murdered by robbers. He is venerated by both Cologne and Cremona as their own special Saint and is regarded as a Martyr, although it is doubtful that he was killed for the Faith. Also known as – St Gerold of Cremona. The image is the only one available but has no explanation accompanying it.

Gerold was born in Cologne. a City also a destination for pilgrimages, for the devotion of Saint Ursula and her fabulous eleven thousand companions and for the Relics of the Three Kings, preserved in the famous Cathedral which is, itself, a destination of pilgrims.

Gerold was, so to speak, a professional pilgrim, who progressively extended the scope of his journeys which became increasingly longer and more difficult, in pursuit of sanctity and perfection.

He was in Rome, travelling along the road to pray in the Basilicas and venerate the linen of Veronica. He arrived at St James of Compostella, staff in hand and shell on his chest, to pay homage to the “baron” of Galicia, St James. Finally, he set sail, holding the palm, for the distant Holy Land, the land of the Lord.

Those who went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem made a will before leaving home because the chances of returning were rather slim. Our saint, however, was among those who returned from the East to Italy. But for him, the most dangerous road was much nearer home. In 1241, while crossing the Alps into what is now Italy, he was attacked by robbers, who left him to die. The remains were collected by some passers-by and taken to Cremona, where the cult for the devout pilgrim was ignited by the veneration paid the holy man and the miracles granted by his intercession.

Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary

By Father Joseph Cacella, 1947

NINTH DAY

Intention:
“The Spiritual Welfare
of our Children”

Oh Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Mother of the Infant Babe of Bethlehem,
and Our Mother, enkindle in our hearts
the spark of youthful innocence.
We know of thy great love for little children.
It was to innocent children
that thou deigned to appear,
revealing the Message of Fatima
and charging them with its propagation.
We know no better way
to show our regard for them,
dear Mother, than to offer our prayers
for all children everywhere.

Therefore, O Mother dear,
we ask thee to watch over all children
in all parts of the world,
to guard and protect their homes,
to preserve the schools wherein they learn
and to keep them from being tainted
by Godless education.
Direct them in their play
and in all their works
that they may grow in age,
wisdom and the love of God.
Grant too, Blessed Mother,
that the prayers of our children
may hasten the end of all wars of carnage
and devastation and grant unto this world
an era of just and lasting peace.
We pray that the world may return to Jesus,
thy Son, through Reparation to thy Immaculate Heart.

Our Lady of Fatima, we beseech thee
to inflame our hearts
with the love of Reparation
and protection of the souls of our children.. Amen

Thought for the Day – 6 October – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

“Month of the Holy Rosary”
The Fourth Joyful Mystery
The Purification of Our Lady
and The Presentation of the Child Jesus
in the Temple

“Then Joseph and Mary carried the Infant Jesus to the Temple to offer Him to God and to buy Him back as their first-born Son, with the price paid by the poor, namely, with a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.
Let us reflect on this new act of humility on the part of the Holy Family.
In spite of the supreme dignity which had been accorded them, they submitted quietly to the law which bound those in poverty and in sin.
We, who are so fond of money and of ostentation, have much to learn from this scene.
Jesus, the God-Man, is purchased back as a sinner for two for two young pigeons.
Mary, the Immaculate Virgin and Mother and Joseph, the holiest and noblest of men, make themselves subject to the law of sin.
We can derive from this, lessons in humility and in detachment
from the goods of this world.”

While the world changes,
the Cross stands firm.

By your work,
you show what you love
and what you know.

For the devil may tempt the good
but he cannot find rest in them;
for he is shaken violently
and upset and driven out –
now by their prayers,
now by their tears of repentance
and now. by their almsgiving
and similar good works.

Blessed are those servants, whom the Master, on His return, shall find watching.” – Luke 12:37

REFLECTION – “How blessed, how happy are those servants, “whom the lord when He comes shall find watching!” (Lk 12:37) Blessed watch, in which they watch for God the Creator of the universe, who fills all things and surpasses all!

Would that myself too, wretched though I be, yet His poor servant, He might deign so to arouse from the sleep of idleness, so to kindle with that fire of Divine Love that the flame of His Love, the longing of His so great Charity, would mount above the stars and the Divine Fire would ever burn within me!

Would that I were of such deserving, that my lamp might ever burn by night in the temple of my Lord that, to all entering the house of my God, it might give light (cf Mt 5:15). Lord, grant me, I pray Thee, in the Name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, my God that love which knows no fall, so that my lamp may feel the kindling touch and know no quenching, may burn for me and for others, may give light!” – St Columban (543-615) Monk, Irish Missionary, Abbot, Writer, Reformer, Teacher, Miracle-worker, Founder of numerous Monateries in present-day France and Italy. Saint of the Day – 6 October – Saint Magnus of Orderzo (c580–c670) Bishop

Saint of the Day – 6 October – Saint Magnus Frigeria of Orderzo (c580–c670) Bishop of Oderzo and Eraclea in greater Venice, Founder and builder of 8 Churches in the region. Born in Altino near the City of Venice and died in c670 in Heraclea, today Cittanova, district of Eraclea near Venice in Italy. Patronage – Venice.

Detail taken from The Incredulity of St Thomas with Bishop Magno by Cima da Conegliano – Altarpiece.

Magnus was the son of the noble Frigeria family, which was important in the Venetian Republic. In around 633, he became the Bishop of Opitergium – today’s Oderzo – near Venice as the successor to Bishop Titian .

In 641, after the Lombard King Rothari conquered and devastated this City which was dominated by the Byzantines – today’s Ístanbul – the inhabitants fled with their Bishop. They founded a new City on the site of today’s hamlet of Cittanova – a district of Eraclea near Venice – which they called Heraclea in honour of the Eastern Roman Emperor, Heraclius. They also fled to preserve their faith because the Lombards were followers of Arianism.

Mural of St Magnus in the Church of Altino

Pope Severinus confirmed this transfer of the Episcopal See. Magnus immediately had the then Cathedral, dedicated to St Peter, built in Heraclea. He is also considered the Founder of eight early Churches in what is now the City of Venice, namely the Churches of Santi Apostoli on Cannaregio, San Pietro di Castello and Santa Maria Formosa, the then Church of Santa Giustina – today the High School GB Benedetti, only the facade remains – as well as the Churches of San Giovanni in Bragora, San Zaccaria, San Salvador / Santissima Salvatore and San Raffaele Arcangelo.

Church of San Giovanni in Bragora

All eight Churches built by our Saint Magnus, still exist and all are active Churches except for Santa Guistina which is deconsecrated and now a high school, although as mentioned above, the facade of the Church is still there. All of them have been restored numerous times but that is understandable and necessary, I am sure you will agree, over 1400+ years! St Magnust pray for the Universal Church!

Church of the new Eraclea

Church of Santa Maria Formosa in Venice

The historical Heraclea lost its importance in the 8th Century, at the latest around 811, after the Doges moved their headquarters to Venice. After the place was abandoned due to increasing floods, On 6 October 1206, Magnus’ remains were transferred to the Church of San Geremia – today Santi Geremia e Lucia – in Venice, where his Relics are greatly overshadowed by the body of a more famous Saint, Santa Lucia. It’s interesting that he was not buried in one of the Churches he founded but evidently, this was his Parish.

. In 1563 an arm Relic was brought to the Cathedral of San Marco. In 1956 the remains returned to the Church of the new Eraclea .

The Incredulity of St Thomas Altarpiece with Bishop Magno by Cima da Conegliano

Given the quite huge profile of our Saint in Venice, it seems surprising that there was never a church built FOR him and dedicated TO him, since so many other Saints are honoured in the hundreds of Churches in Venice. But, in 1454, the Venetian Senate named San Magno as Patron Saint of the Republic, honouring him alongside the existing Patrons – Marco and Teodoro.

EIGHTH DAY

Intention:
“The Conversion of Sinners”

Oh Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Refuge of the human race,
thou have given unto us the means
of destroying the menace of atheism
and godless lives.
Thy Promise of conversion
for those unfortunate victims
of false beliefs, has instilled joy and hope
into the nations of the earth.
We grieve for those who are victims of such vice.
Grant, we beseech thee. Oh Mother,
that grace and faith
may come to those separated
from thy Son by error and discord.
We fail, if we heed not thy Message of Fatima.
We know thy wishes and,, therefore,
we promise to make
Reparation to thy Immaculate Heart,
through the Most holy Rosary
and the Five First Saturdays,
that sinners may hear the Word of God
and keep it.

Our Lady of Fatima, Refuge of the human race,
inflame our hearts with the love of Reparation.
Amen

“Month of the Holy Rosary”
The Third Joyful Mystery
The Birth of Jesus

Like the simple shepherds, let us prostrate ourselves with faith and with love before the Manger.
Let us offer, as our gifts, our good resolutions; let us offer our hearts and ask God to change them and make them entirely His forever.

Quite suddenly, the darkness of the night and the wretchedness of the cave was illuminated by a bright light from Heaven.
While men were unaware of, or indifferent to, the miraculous event which had taken place, bands of Angels descended from Heaven and sang: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace among men of goodwill” (Lk 2:13-14).
Joseph bent over the Divine Infant and silently adored Him, while the Blessed Virgin knelt at His Feet in loving contemplation.

Let us too, learn to adore and love Him, as His Mother and Foster-Father did.”

and after that have nothing more they can do. …
be afraid of him who, after he has killed,
has power to cast into hell.

Luke 12:4-5

Take courage: It is I,
do not be afraid.
And He got into
the boat with them
and the wind fell

Mark 6:50-51

Do not, therefore, lose your confidence,
which has a great reward.
For you have need of patience
that, doing the will of God,
you may receive the promise.
For yet a very little while
and He Who is to come,
will come
and will not delay.

Hebrews 10:35-37

Go forward bravely.
Fear nothing.
Trust in God – all will be well.

St Joan of Arc (1412-1431)

Now it is that we are to show
an invincible courage towards our Saviour,
serving Him purely for the love of His will,
not only without pleasure
but amid this deluge of sorrows,
horrors, distresses and assaults,
as did his glorious Mother and St John,
upon the day of His Passion.
Amongst so many blasphemies,
sorrows and deadly distresses,
they remained constant in love …

The good Angels are around you,
like a company of Sentinels on guard!

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor Caritatis

We think not enough of this Truth –
that God is present with us
that He sees our thoughts,
even long before we have them.
That He knows what we think
and shall think, better than we ourselves
that He sees the folds and recesses,
of our heart
and of this other Truth –
that NOTHING HAPPENS to us
but by the order of Providence.
We should all be Saints,
if we well apprehended these Truths.
And truly, it is a great consolation,
to know that God sees
the bottom of our heart.”

St Jane Frances de Chantal (1572-1641)
Disciple and Collaborator with
St Francis de Sales in Founding
the Sisters of the Visitation

One Minute Reflection – 5 October – ‘ … Everyone without God has a dead soul. ‘

One Minute Reflection – 5 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – Hebrews 10:32-38, Luke 12:1-8 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have nothing more that they can do. … be afraid of him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell. ” – Luke 12:4-5

REFLECTION – “The Gospel is life. Impiety and infidelity are the death of the soul. So then, if the soul can die, how then is it yet immortal? Because, there is always a dimension of life in the soul which can never be extinguished. And how does it die? Not in ceasing to be life but by losing its proper life. For the soul is both life to something else and it has it own proper life. Consider the order of the creatures. The soul is the life of the body. God is the life of the soul. As the life that is the soul, is present with the body that the body may not die, so the life of the soul (God), ought to be with the soul that it may not die.

How does the body die? By the departure of the soul. I say, by the departure of the soul, the body dies and it lies there as a mere carcass, what was a little before, a lively, not a contemptible object. There are in it still, its several members, the eyes and ears. But these are merely the windows of the house – its inhabitant is gone. Those who bewail the dead, cry in vain at the windows of the house. There is no-one there within it to hear. Why is the body dead? Because the soul, its life, is gone. But at what point is the soul itself dead? When God, its life, has forsaken it. This then we can know and hold for certain – the body is dead without the soul and the soul is dead without God. Everyone without God has a dead soul. You who bewail the dead rather, should bewail sin! Bewail ungodliness! Bewail disbelief! – St Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo, Father and Doctor of the Church (Sermon 65).

PRAYER – Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, unto all Thy servants, that they may remain continually in the enjoyment of soundness, both of mind and body and by the glorious intercession of the Blessed Mary, always a Virgin, maybe delivered from present sadness and enter into the joy of Thine eternal gladness. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Our Morning Offering – 5 October – I Will Love Thee, Lord

Our Morning Offering – 5 October

I Will Love Thee, Lord
By St Thomas of Villanova (1488-1555)

I will love Thee, Lord,
in every way
and without setting limits
to my love.
Thou set no limits to what Thou
hast done for me;
Thou hast not measured Thy gifts.
I will not measure my love.
I will love Thee, Lord,
with all my strength,
with all my powers,
as much as I am able.
Amen

Saint of the Day – 5 October – Blessed Felicia Meda OSC (1378-1444) Virgin

Saint of the Day – 5 October – Blessed Felicia Meda OSC (1378-1444) Virgin, Nun of the Second Order of St Francis – the Poor Clares, Born in 1378, Milan, Lombardy, Italy and died in 1444, aged 66, at Pisaro, Italy of natural causes. Especially known for founding a Reformed community of Poor Clares under the guidance of St Bernardine of Siena. Felicia’s younger sister became a Poor Clare Nun too and her younger brother became a Franciscan Friar!

Felicia was a descendant of the very distinguished and wealthy family of the Meda. She was born at Milan in Lombardy in 1378. She had good and pious parents who reared the pious and gifted child in the fear of God and left nothing undone which could be of advantage in her spiritual development. In a very short time, she acquired a remarkable command of the Latin language.

She lost both father and mother at a very early age andthereafterunited herself still more intimately with God. When she was twelve years old, she made a vow of perpetual chastity and then entered the Convent of the Poor Clares at St Ursula in Milan.

The devil endeavoured to make Convent life miserable for her by subjecting her to severe temptations and frightful apparitions. But Felicia did not permit herself to be overcome. By fervent prayer and the words of the Psalmist: “O God, come to my assistance! O Lord, make hast to help me!” she put the spirits of darkness to flight and persevered steadfastly in her vocation.

When the Abbess of the Convent died in 1425, the community unanimously chose Felicia as her successor. In this position, she did her utmost, by word, deed and example, to promote the true religious spirit in her community. In this way, its good name spread far and wide, even reaching the ears of Pope Eugene IV. This, in turn, induced the Pope and the Vicar General of the Observant Franciscans, St Bernardine of Siena, to entrust her with the extablishment of a new Convent of Poor Clares at Pesaro.

Despite her advanced age, Felicia and seven companions made the journey from Milan to Pesaro on foot. When the Foundress of the Convent, the Princess of Montefeltro, offered her the carriage in which she had come out to meet the new community, Felicia humbly declined the offer and entered the Town on foot with the rest of her companions.

Felicia spent four years in this new foundation, received a great number of new members and reared and strengthened them in the spirit of their holy Father, St Francis of Assisi. Blessed Seraphina Sforza (1434-1478) remembered on 8 September, later entered this community, and pious legend has it that they have both appeared on the walls of Pisaro to assure their spiritual protection of that City.

Blessed Felicia Meda died in the odour of sanctity in 1444 and many miracles were wrought by God in testimony of the holiness of His servant. Her body was laid to rest in the Convent she had founded. Four hundred years later it was transferred to the Cathedral of Pesaro.

Pope Pius IX solemnly enrolled Blessed Felicia Meda among the Blessed.

Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,Queen of the Most Holy Rosary – Day Seven – 4 October

Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary

By Father Joseph Cacella, 1947

SEVENTH DAY

Intention:
“Forgiveness of Sin”

Oh Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Refuge of Sinners,
to whom else will we turn
in our sorrow for sin, if not to thee.
From whom shall we find comfort
and consolation, in the shame of our sins,
except from thee?
Lead us back, dear Mother of Love,
to the path of righteousness
which leads to the Sacred Heart of thy Divine Son.
We have sinned often, oh dear Mother
and the remembrances
of the errors of our ways troubles us.
It shall be no more.
We know that thy protecting care,
will find peace and hope for us
and the remission of our sins.
We know too that as with Mary Magdalene of old,
thy Son shall welcome us with a loving smile
because, you have always pleaded for us.
Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima, Refuge of sinners,
inflame our hearts with
the love of Sorrow, Repentance, Penance and Reparation.

Thought for the Day – 4 October – The Second Joyful Mystery – Mary’s Visit to St Elizabeth

Thought for the Day – 4 October – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

“Month of the Holy Rosary”
The Second Joyful Mystery
Mary’s Visit to St Elizabeth

But are we as grateful to God as we ought to be!
Do we correspond with His graces?
Are we prepared to make any sacrifice in order to share with others the gifts with which He has enriched us?

Let us remember that gratitude is a virtue which is very pleasing to God and draws down on us other graces and gifts.

In his panegyric on Trajan, the younger Pliny observes that the best means of soliciting new favours, is to show gratitude for those which we have already received.
On the other hand, as St Bernard points out, ingratitude is like a scorching wind, which dries up the dew of Divine Mercy (Sermon 5 in Cant).
Let us be grateful to God, therefore and do our best to share with others the gifts which we have received.
Because He Who is mighty has done great things for me and Holy is His Name!” (Lk 1:46-55).

Quote/s of the Day – 4 October – St Francis of Assisi (c1181–1226) Confessor, Founder

All I want to know is Christ
and the power flowing
from His Resurrection!

Jesus is happy to come with us,
as Truth is happy to be spoken,
as Life to be lived,
as Light to be lit,
as Love is to be loved,
as Joy to be given,
as Peace to be spread.

Be strengthened in Almighty God
and in the power of His might,
for with His help, nothing is difficult.
Throw off the heavy load of your own will,
cast aside the burden of sin
and gird yourselves as valiant warriors!
Forget what you are leaving behind;
strain forward to the great things before you.
I tell you that every place where you set foot,
shall be yours.
For the Spirit Who goes before your face
is Christ the Lord.
He will carry you to the topmost peak
in the arms of His Love.

Keep a clear eye toward life’s end.
Do not forget your purpose
and destiny as God’s creature.
What you are in His sight,
is what you are and nothing more.
Remember that when you leave this earth,
you can take nothing that you have received…
but only what you have given – a full heart
enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.

Great and Glorious God
By St Francis of Assisi (c1181-1226)

Great and glorious God,
my Lord Jesus Christ!
I implore Thee to enlighten me
and to disperse the darkness of my soul.
Give me true faith, firm hope and perfect charity.
Grant me, O Lord, to know Thee so well
that in all things I may act by Thy Light
and in accordance with Thy holy Will.
Amen

Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace.
“The Peace Prayer”
By St Francis of Assisi (c1181–1226

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving
that we receive;
it is in pardoning
that we are pardoned
and it is in dying,
that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

One Minute Reflection – 4 October – “For My yoke is sweet and My burden light.” – Matthew 11:30

One Minute Reflection – 4 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – St Francis of Assisi OFM (c1181–1226) Confessor, Founder – Galatians 6:14-18, Matthew 11:25-30 Scripture Search here: https://www.drbo.org/

For My yoke is sweet and My burden light.” – Matthew 11:30

REFLECTION – “People who complain about the roughness of the Lord’s yoke have possibly not completely rejected, the heavy load of the lusts of the world, or, if they did reject them, they have enslaved themselves to them again, to their greater shame! Outwardly, they carry the yoke of the Lord but inwardly, they submit their shoulders to the burden of the world’s cares. They set on the balance of the Lord’s yoke, the hardships and difficulties which they inflict on themselves… As for the yoke of the Lord – it is “sweet and its burden light”.

Indeed, what is sweeter, what more glorious, than to see oneself lifted up above the world by the scorn one shows it and, seated at the summit of a conscience at peace, to have the whole world at one’s feet? Then, one sees nothing to desire, nothing to fear, nothing to envy, nothing of one’s own which might be taken away, no evil which might be caused one, by another. The eyes of the heart turn towards “an inheritance which is incorruptible, undefiled and unfading which is kept for us in Heaven” (1 Pt 1:4). With a sort of greatness of soul, one gives little importance to this world’s goods – they pass away; to the pleasures of the flesh – they are contaminated; to the world’s pomp – it fades and, in one’s joy, one repeats the words of the Prophet: “All mankind is grass and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, the flower fades but the Word of the Lord remains forever” (Is 40:6-8)… In charity – and nowhere but in charity – dwells true tranquillity and true sweetness, for, it is the yoke of the Lord!”St Aelred of Rievaulx (1110-1167) Cistercian Monk (The Mirror of charity I:30-31).

PRAYER – O God, Who by the good works of blessed Francis enriched Thy Church by establishing a new religious family, grant us to imitate him by emulation of him, by looking upon the things of earth as nought and ever to rejoice in sharing Thy heavenly gifts. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

Saint of the Day – 4 October – Saint Aurea of Paris (Died 666) Virgin, Abbess

Saint of the Day – 4 October – Saint Aurea of Paris (Died 666) Virgin, Abbess of Saint Martial Convent in Paris during the reigns of King Dagobert I and King Clovis II which Aurea ruled for 33 years, known as a Miracle-worker both before and after her death. Also known as – Aure. On some calendars, particularly in the Proper of Paris, St Aurea is venerated on 5 October owing to the conflict with St Francis’ Feast today.

The Roman Martyrology reads: “In Paris, still in France, Saint Aurea, Abbess, whom Saint Eligius placed at the head of a Monastery which he himself founded in this City under the rule of Saint Columba, in which he had gathered three hundred virgins.

St Aurea in a 17th Century mural carrying a miniature Crucifix.
At the Church in Tohogne, Belgium.

Daughter of Maurino and Quiria. St Aurea appears in works by two writers, St Wudoin and St Jonas of Bobbio (the renowned Abbot and disciple of St Columba and later Author of the Life of St Columba), in their Hagiographies of St Eligius and St Eustace. Both writers state that she was an immigrant to Paris from Syria.

In 633, Aurea was placed, by Saint Eligius (c588-660), at the head of a female Monastery, which he founded in Paris donating his own property for the founding of the first female Monastery in the region.

Aurea was in office from 633 to 666, the year in which she died on 3 (or 4) October, victim of a furious plague which caused the death of one hundred and sixty of her Nuns.

Her remains, were initially placed in the Church of St Paul, where the Nuns were then buried and were then taken to the Oratory of St Marziale. They were again transferred to St Paul’s and finally, in 1421, brought back to St Marziale but in 1792, during the Revolution, they were removed and distroyed, except for a portion of her Relics which were transferred to safety in Normandy. These might be those that are still safely held and venerated at the Church of St Eligius in Paris. In the same Church, there is also a mural of her receiving the veil from the hands of St Eloigius.

Many miracles were recorded through St Aurea’s prayers and intercession. She brought a woman back to life, in order to release a key from her dead hands. Aurea swept red-hot ashes out of an empty oven, causing perfectly baked loaves to appear and, long after her death, St Aurea cured and restored the sight of a blind woman with the touch of her cut-off (and freshly bleeding) arm.

Good St Eligius” here where St Aurea and her Convent are mentioned:
