Novena to St Francis de Sales Day One – 15 January

Novena to St Francis de Sales
Day One – 15 January

There is no clock, no matter how good it may be, that doesn’t need resetting and rewinding twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.   In addition, at least once a year it must be taken apart to remove the dirt clogging it, straighten out bent parts and repair those worn out.   In like manner, every morning and evening, a person who really takes care of his heart, must rewind it for God’s service by means of certain practices of piety.   At least once a year he must take it apart and examine every piece in detail;  that is, every affection and passion, in order to repair, whatever defects there may be. (INT. Part 5, Ch. 1; O. III, p. 340)

O blessed Francis de Sales,
who on earth did excel in a life of virtue,
especially in the love of God and neighbour,
I earnestly ask you to take me
under your compassionate care and protection.
Obtain for me conversion of mind and heart.
Grant that all people,
especially ……………………..
(names of those whom you wish to include)
may experience the depth of God’s redeeming and healing love.
Teach me to fix my eyes on the things of heaven
even as I walk each day with my feet planted firmly on the earth.
Help me, through the practice of virtue and the pursuit of devotion,
to avoid anything that would otherwise cause me to stumble
in my attempt to follow Christ
and to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit.
Encouraged by your prayers and example,
help me to live fully my sacred dignity
with the hope of experiencing my sacred destiny:
eternal life with God.
Receive also this particular need or concern
that I now lift up in prayer………………………………
(mention your particular need).
O God, for the salvation of all,
you desired that St Francis de Sales,
preacher, missionary, confessor, bishop and founder,
should befriend many along the road to salvation.
Mercifully grant that we,
infused with the humility and gentleness of his charity,
guided by his wisdom and sharing in his spirit
may experience eternal life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thought for the Day – 23 December – The Fourth Sunday of Advent – Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:39-45

In those days, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
Luke 1:39-40

“When the Holy Spirit touches a heart, He puts to flight all tepidity.   He loves diligence and promptitude and is the enemy of procrastination and delays in the performance of the divine will… “Mary set out in haste”…

What graces and favours must have descended upon Zechariah’s house when the Virgin entered it?   If Abraham received so many graces for having given hospitality to three angels in his tent… what graces and how many heavenly blessings must have descended upon the house of Zechariah into which entered the Angel of the Great Counsel (Is 9:5, Septuagint), that true Jacob and Divine Prophet, the true Ark of the Covenant, Our Lord enclosed within the womb of Mary!   Indeed, the whole house was overcome with joy; the infant leapt with joy, the father recovered his speech, the mother was filled with the Holy Spirit and received the gift of prophecy, for on seeing this blessed Lady enter her house she exclaimed:  “Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to visit me?”… And Mary, hearing what her kinswoman, Elizabeth, said in her praise, humbled herself and referred all the glory to God.   Then declaring that all her happiness came from the fact that God had looked upon His servant in her lowliness, she intoned that beautiful and wonderful canticle, the Magnificat.

Oh, how overwhelmed with joy we should be when visited by this divine Saviour in the most Blessed Sacrament of the altar and by the interior graces we receive daily through the many inspirations and words He speaks to our hearts!”…St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church

One Minute Reflection – 3 November – Today’s Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-11 – Saturday of the Thirtieth week in Ordinary Time, Year B and The Memorial of St Martin de Porres (1579-1639)

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”…Luke 14:11

REFLECTION – “Humility is not just about self-mistrust but about the entrusting of ourselves to God.   Distrusting ourselves and our own strength produces trust in God and from that trust generosity of soul is born.

The most holy Virgin, Our Lady, gave us an outstanding example of this when she spoke these words:  “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).   When she said she was the handmaid of the Lord she was performing the greatest act of humility it is possible to do and all the more so in that she was contradicting the praise given her by the angel – that she would be mother of God, that the child to be born from her womb would be called Son of the Most High, a greater dignity than any we might imagine – I say, she opposed her lowliness and unworthiness to all these praises and greatness by saying that she was the handmaid of the Lord.   Yet note how, no sooner had she rendered her duty to humility than she practised outstanding generosity by saying:  “May it be to me according to your word”.
What she wanted to say was:  It is true I am in no way capable of this grace if one is to consider what I am of myself but insofar as what is good in me comes from God and what you say to me is His own most holy will, I believe it may happen and will happen. And so, without the least hesitation, she said:  “Let it be done to me according to your word”St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Churchluke 14 11 for everyone who exalts himself - humility is not just about - st francis de sales - 3 nov 2018

PRAYER – Lord Jesus, help us to appreciate and live Your spiritual values and give them the first place in our hearts.   Grant that we may always seek them first and remain forever united with You.   Send Your Spirit with his gifts and blessings and may the Mother of all Virtue, assist us in our need.   Help us to follow the path of humility St Martin so splendidly showed us, that we may obtain from You, as he did, a place in Your Kingdom. Most Holy Mary
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church

Most Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God,
I am unworthy to be your servant.
Yet moved by your motherly care for me
and longing to serve you,
I choose you this day to be my Queen,
my Advocate and my Mother.
I firmly resolve ever
to be devoted to you
and to do what I can to encourage others
to be devoted to you.
My loving Mother,
through the Precious Blood of your Son shed for me,
I beg you to receive me
as your servant forever.
Aid me in my actions
and beg for me, the grace
never by thought, word, or deed
to be displeasing in your sight
and that of your most holy Son.
Remember me, dearest Mother,
and do not abandon me at the hour of death.

The everlasting God has in His wisdom
foreseen from eternity the cross He now
presents to you as a gift from His inmost heart.
The cross He now sends you
He has considered
with His all-knowing eyes,
understood with His divine mind,
tested with His wise justice,
warmed with loving arms
and weighed with His own hands
to see that it is not one inch too large
nor one ounce too heavy for you.
He has blessed it with His holy name,
anointed it with His grace,
perfumed it with His consolation,
taken one last glance at you and your courage
and then sent it to you from heaven,
a special greeting from God to you,
an alms of the all-merciful love of God.

Camillus wanted to have on his habit the Sign of the Cross
in order ‘to demonstrate that this is a religion of the Cross…
so that those who want to follow our way of life will get ready…

“We have to love our way out of this.”
There is nothing wimpy or namby-pamby
or blind about this conviction.
When we love extravagantly,
we are not purposely blinding ourselves to moral realities—
just the contrary.

Love is not a sentiment, but “a harsh and dreadful thing,”
as Dostoevsky said.

This is just what Jesus shows on His terrible cross.
And this is just what we, His followers, must imitate.

‘This people honours me with their lips but their heart is far from me…”…Mark 7:6

“The interior life is primordial… The active life is the consequence of the interior life and has no value unless it depends upon it.   We should like to do everything to the best of our ability, perfectly.   But if it isn’t linked to our interior life it is to no purpose.   All the value of our life and activity stems from our interior life, the life of love for God and the Virgin Mary, the Immaculata – not in theories or sweetness but in the practice of a love that consists in the union of our will with the will of the Immaculate Virgin.

Above and over all we must deepen this interior life.   If it is truly a case of spiritual life then supernatural means are required.   Prayer, prayer and prayer alone is what is needed to undertake the interior life and its flowering. Interior recollection is necessary.

Let us not be anxious about unnecessary things but gently, peacefully, let us try to preserve recollection of spirit and be attentive to God’s grace.   That is why silence helps us.”…St Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) Martyrprayer prayer and prayer alone - st maximillian kolbe - 2 sept 2018

Always active, always at rest. – St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctoralways active always at rest - st augustine - 12 august 2018

At the age of sixteen, Jane Frances de Frémyot, already a motherless child, was placed under the care of a worldly-minded governess.   In this crisis, she offered herself to the Mother of God and secured Mary’s protection for life.   When a Protestant sought her hand, she steadily refused to marry “an enemy of God and His Church” and shortly afterwards, as the loving and beloved wife of the Baron de Chantal, made her house the pattern of a Christian home.
But God had marked her for something higher than domestic sanctity.   Two children and a dearly beloved sister died and, in the full tide of prosperity, her husband’s life was taken by the innocent hand of a friend.   For seven years the sorrows of her widowhood were increased by ill-usage from servants and inferiors and the cruel importunities of friends, who urged her to marry again.   Harassed almost to despair by their entreaties, she branded on her heart the name of Jesus and in the end left her beloved home and children to live for God alone.
It was on the 19th of March 1609, that Madame de Chantal bade farewell to her family and relations.   Pale, and with tears in her eyes, she passed round the large room, sweetly and humbly taking leave of each.   Her son, a boy of fifteen, used every entreaty, every endearment, to induce his mother not to leave them and at last passionately flung himself across the door of the room.   In an agony of distress, she passed on over the body of her son to the embrace of her aged and disconsolate father.   The anguish of that parting reached its height when, kneeling at the feet of the venerable old man, she sought and obtained his last blessing, promising to repay in her new home his sacrifice by her prayers.
Well might St Francis call her “the valiant woman.”
She was to found with St Francis de Sales a great Order.   Sickness, opposition, want, beset her and the death of children, friends and of St Francis himself followed, while eighty-seven houses of the Visitation rose under her hand.   Nine long years of interior desolation completed the work of God’s grace and in her seventieth year, St Vincent of Paul saw, at the moment of her death, her soul ascend, as a ball of fire, to heaven.

May we all rest in Christ and His Mother!

“Speaking of:  Humility”

“God resists the proud
but gives grace to the humble”

James 4:6god resists the proud - james 4 - 6

“Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues,
hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist,
there cannot be any other virtue,
except in mere appearance.”HUMILITY IS THE FOUNDATION-STAUGUSTINE

“It was pride that changed angels into devils;
it is humility that makes men as angels.”

St Augustine (354-430) Doctor of Graceit was pride - st augustine - 20 june 2018

“As patience leads to peace
and study to science,
so are humiliations,
the path that leads to humility.”

St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) Mellifluous Doctor

as patience leads to peace - st bernard - 20 june 2018

“In the difficulties which are placed before me,
why should I not act like a donkey?
When one speaks ill of him – the donkey says nothing.
When he is mistreated – he says nothing.
When he is forgotten – he says nothing.
When no food is given him – he says nothing.
When he is made to advance – he says nothing.
When he is despised – he says nothing.
When he is overburdened – he says nothing.
The true servant of God must do likewise
and say with David:
“Before Thee I have become like a beast of burden.”

St Alphonsus Rodriguez (1532-1617)in the difficulties which are placed before me - st alphonsus rodriguez - 20 june 2018

“True humility
scarcely ever
utters words
of humility.”

“Humility consists
in not esteeming ourselves above other men
and in not seeking
to be esteemed above them.”

“Humility makes our lives
acceptable to God,
meekness makes us
acceptable to men.”true humility - humility consists - humility makes our lives - st francis de sales - 20 june 2018

“If, when stung by slander or ill-nature,
we wax proud and swell with anger,
it is a proof that our gentleness
and humility are unreal
and mere artificial show.”

“The highest point of humility
consists in not merely acknowledging one’s abjection
but in taking pleasure therein,
not from any want of breadth or courage
but to give the more glory to God’s Divine Majesty
and to esteem one’s neighbour,
more highly than one’s self.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of Charityif when stung by slander - the highest point of humility - st francis de sales - 20 june 2018

An Act of Oblation to the Holy Trinity
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of Charity

I vow and consecrate to God
all that is in me,
my memory and my actions, to God the Father;
my understanding and my words, to God the Son;
my will and my thoughts, to God the Holy Spirit.
I consecrate my heart, my body,
my tongue, my senses and all my sorrows
to the sacred Humanity of Jesus Christ,
who consented to be betrayed
into the hands of wicked men
and to suffer the torment of the Cross for me.

Most Holy Virgin, I Choose You this Day
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of Charity

Most Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God,
I am unworthy to be your servant.
Yet moved by your motherly care for me
and longing to serve you,
I choose you this day to be my Queen,
my Advocate and my Mother.
I firmly resolve ever
to be devoted to you
and to do what I can
to encourage others
to be devoted to you.
My loving Mother,
through the Precious Blood
of your Son shed for me,
I beg you to receive me
as your servant forever.
Aid me in my actions
and beg for me the grace
never by thought, word, or deed
to be displeasing in your sight
and that of your most holy Son.
Remember me, dearest Mother,
and do not abandon me at the hour of death.

Act of Abandonment
By St Francis De Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of Charity

O my God, I thank You
and I praise You
for accomplishing Your holy
and all-lovable will
without any regard for mine.
With my whole heart,
in spite of my heart,
do I receive this cross I feared so much!
It is the cross of Your choice,
the cross of Your love.
I venerate it;
nor for anything in the world
would I wish that it had not come,
since You willed it.
I keep it with gratitude and with joy,
as I do everything that comes from Your hand;
and I shall strive to carry it without letting it drag,
with all the respect
and all the affection which Your works deserve.

One Minute Reflection – 27 March – Tuesday of Holy Week 2018

Peter said to him, “Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times…John 13:37-38

REFLECTION – “We too often forget that maxim of the Saints which warns us to consider ourselves as each day recommencing our progress towards perfection.   If we consider it frequently we shall not be surprised at the poverty of our spirit, nor how much we have to refuse ourselves.   The work is never finished, we have continually to begin again and that courageously.   What we have done so far is good but what we are going to commence will be better and when we have finished that, we shall begin something else that will be better still and then another – until we leave this world to begin a new life that will have no end because it is the best that can happen to us.
It is not then a case for tears that we have so much work to do for our souls, for we need great courage to go ever onwards (since we must never stop) and much resolution to restrain our desires.   Observe carefully this precept that all the Saints have given to those who would emulate them: to speak little, or not at all, of yourself and your own interests.”…St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Churchit is not then a case for tears - st francis de sales - tuesday of holy week - 27 march 2018

PRAYER – All-powerful, everliving God, may our sacramental celebration of the Lord’s passion bring us Your forgiveness, Your love and Your help.   Grant that through the prayers of Blessed Louis-Edouard Cestac, Your servant, we may constantly grow in sanctity, zeal and fortitude. “Speaking of the Eucharist/the Holy Mass”

“When Mass is being celebrated, the sanctuary is filled, with countless angels, who adore the divine victim, immolated on the altar.”

St John Chrysostom (347-407) Father & Doctor of the Churchwhen mass is being celebrated - st john chrysostom - 4 feb 2018

“The Holy Mass would be of greater profit, if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls, after death.”

Pope Benedict XV (1854-1922)the holy mass - pope benedict XV

“One merits more, by devoutly assisting at a Holy Mass, than by distributing, all of his goods to the poor and travelling, all over the world, on pilgrimage.”

St Bernard if Clairvaux (1090-1153) Doctor of the Churchone merits more - st bernard of clairvaux - 4 feb 2018

“The celebration of Holy Mass has the same value as the Death of Jesus on the Cross.”

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) Doctor of the Churchthe celebration of holy mass - st thomas aquinas - 28 jan 2018

“When you have received Him, stir up your heart to do Him homage, speak to Him about your spiritual life, gazing upon Him in your soul, where He is present, for your happiness, welcome Him as warmly as possible and behave outwardly, in such a way, that your actions, may give proof to all, of His Presence.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Churchwhen you have received him - st francis de sales - 4 feb 2018

“If someone said to us, “At such an hour a dead person is to be raised to life, ” we should run very quickly to see it.   But is not the Consecration, which changes bread and wine into the Body and Blood of God, a much greater miracle than to raise a dead person to life?   We ought always to devote at least a quarter of an hour to preparing ourselves to hear Mass well.   We ought to annihilate ourselves before God, after the example of His profound annihilation in the Sacrament of the Eucharist and we should make our examination of conscience, for we must be in a state of grace. to be able to assist properly at Mass.   If we knew the value of the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or rather, if we had faith, we should be much more zealous to assist at it.”

“The glorious St Simeon also was very happy…
to carry Him as did Our Lady…
we do this when we endure with love
the labours and pains He sends us,
that is to say, when the love which we bear
to the Law of God makes us find His yoke easy
and pleasing, so that we love these pains and labours,
and gather sweetness in the midst of bitterness.
This is nothing else but to carry Our Lord in our arms.
Now if we carry Him in this way,
He will, without doubt, Himself carry us.”

Quote/s for the Day – 1 February – The Memorial of Bl Benedict Daswa (1946-1990) Martyr – The First South African-born to be Beatified.

Would it not have been so simple for Blessed Benedict to pay his share of the required amount to hire the Sangona (Witch Doctor) to “sniff out” the witch who caused the storms?    It was not a huge amount of money required by each resident.   The temptation to do so must have been quite appealing but he refused and tried to explain that the storms were a natural phenomenon.   He did, however, pay the ultimate price for his fidelity, with his blood.

“Speaking of Temptation”

“Virtue is nothing, without the trial of temptation,
for there is no conflict, without an enemy,
no victory, without strife.”

St Pope Leo the Great (400-461) Father & Doctor of the Churchvirtue is nothing - st pope leo the great - 1 feb 2018

“There are in truth, three states of the converted,
the beginning, the middle and the perfection.
In the beginning, they experience the charms of sweetness;
in the middle, the contests of temptation;
and in the end, the fullness of perfection.”

St Pope Gregory the Great (540-604) Father & Doctor of the Churchthere are in truth - st pope gregory the great - 1 feb 2018

“Do not grieve over the temptations you suffer.
When the Lord intends to bestow a particular virtue on us,
He often permits us first to be tempted by the opposite vice.
Therefore, look upon every temptation as an invitation
to grow in a particular virtue and a promise by God,
that you will be successful, if only you stand fast.”

St Philip Neri (1515-1595)do not grieve - st philip neri - 1 feb 2018

“The beginning of all temptation lies in a wavering mind
and little trust in God, for as a rudderless ship is driven
hither and yon by waves, so a careless and irresolute man,
is tempted in many ways.
Fire tempers iron and temptation steels the just.
Often we do not know what we can stand
but temptation shows us what we are.
Above all, we must be especially alert against
the beginnings of temptation, for the enemy is more easily
conquered if he is refused admittance to the mind
and is met beyond the threshold when he knocks.”

St Francis De Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Churchthe beginning of all temptation - st francis de sales - 1 feb 2018

“It often happens that we pray God to deliver us
from some dangerous temptation and yet,
God does not hear us but permits the temptation
to continue troubling us.   In such a case, let us understand,
that God permits even this for our greater good.
When a soul in temptation recommends itself to God
and by His aid resists, O how it then advances in perfection.”

“He who trusts himself is lost.
He who trusts in God can do all things.

St Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) Doctor of the Churchit often happens - st alphonsus - 1 feb 2018

“When tempted, invoke your Angel.
He is more eager to help you, than you are to be helped!
Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him –
he trembles and flees, at the sight of your Guardian Angel.”

Do you but hold fast

It’s a great mistake
because it leads nowhere –

in someone else’s garden;

and to bearing the crosses, little or great,
that you will find there.
Believe me, this is the most important
