Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost, Beata Vergine delle Grazie / The Blessed Virgin of Grace, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy (1479) and Memorials of the Saints – 24 October

Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint Raphael the Archangel
The Feast day of Saint Raphael was included for the first time in the General Roman Calendar in 1921, for celebration on 24 October. With the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar, the Feast was transferred to September 29 for celebration together with Archangels Saints Michael and Gabriel.

Beata Vergine delle Grazie / The Blessed Virgin of Grace, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy (1479) – Fourth Sunday of October:

When Sir John Emo was serving as Venetian Ambassador to Constantinople, Sultan Mohammed II gave him a Byzantine-style icon of the Virgin nursing the Child.
In 1479, Sir Emo became Lieutenant of Udine, a City in northeast Italy then under the Republic of Venice, bringing the icon with him to the governor’s castle. Not long afterward, one of the palace cooks nearly lost a hand in the kitchen but it healed when touched to the image. News of the miracle inspired popular devotion, so Sir Emo decided to move the image to the Church of Sts. Gervais and Protasius, where it entered in procession on 8 September 1479. By 1495, the Church was too small for all the pilgrims and a new Sanctuary was begun, consecrated to Our Lady of Graces and run by the Servants of Mary. On 6 September 1870 the Church Crowned the icon; in 1922, it named the Shrine a Minor Basilica.

On the fourth Sunday of October, the City both fulfills and renews, a vow made during the plague of 1555. The Beata Vergine delle Grazie is also credited with saving the region from the plague of 1599, the cholera of 1836 and the bombardment of the war in1944.

St Anthony Mary Claret CMF (1807-1870) Known as “The Spiritual Father of Cuba.” In the first years, records show, that he Confirmed 100,000 people and performed 9,000 Sacramental Marriages.Archbishop of Cuba, one of the Fathers of the First Vatican Council,Confessor to the Queen of Spain, Missionary, Founder of the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians, Confessor, Mystic, Social Reformer, Spiritual Director, Writer, Publisher, Preacher, Apostle of Charity. He was declared venerable by Pope Leo XIII in 1899. He was Beatified in 1934 and in 1950, Canonised by Pope Pius XII. His heart is incorrupt.
The 1969 revision of the calendar moved St Anthony Feast to the day of his death, 24 October (from the 23rd) which had been the Feast of Saint Raphael the Archangel since 1921.

Saint of the Day – 20 April – Blessed Chiara Bosatta DSMP (1858-1887)

Saint of the Day – 20 April – Blessed Chiara Bosatta DSMP (1858-1887) Virgin Religious, Mystic, Apostle of Charity, co-Founder alongside her sister and Saint Luigi Guanella  (1842-1915) – the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence – born on 27 May 1858 in Pianello del Lario, Como, Italy as Dina Bosatta and died on 20 April 1887 in Pianello del Lario, Como, Italy of natural causes, aged 28.   Patronage – Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence.   Her body is incorrupt.
Blessed Chiara managed the new order of the Daughters of St Mary, in her hometown and the surrounding areas.   In her service to the poor she contracted tuberculosis which caused her death at such a young age, in 1887.bl chiara

Dina Bosatta was born in 1858 in Como to Alessandro Bosatta and Rosa Mazzocchi – her father worked as a silk manufacturer who died in 1861 when she was but a toddler.   She was the last of eleven siblings, 9 brothers and one sister, Marcellina.

She studied with the Daughters of Charity at the age of thirteen in 1871.   She decided to consecrate her life to God and made the decision to become a nun and so entered into the period of novitiate with the Canossians from 1871 to 1878.   However, after a while, she descerned that their charism was not that, of which she felt she was being called and so left that congregation to pursue her vocation elsewhere.   Despite this, she was enthralled with their charism and admired their spirit and strong dedication to their rules of life.

Dina returned to her home and joined with her sister Marcellina and the two joined the Daughters of Mary that Father Carlo Copponi had established.    Marcellina would later become the superior of the order.   The pair also worked at a hospice to tend to neglected children and older people as well as teaching children.19-B-bl chiara bosatta-web-768x1024

The sisters then co-ordinated their efforts in establishing a new religious congregation – the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence – together with Saint Luigi Guanella.   It was at this point that she took the religious name of “Chiara.”    She was professed as a nun on 27 October 1878.

Tending to the poor bought unwanted consequences for Bosatta when she contracted tuberculosis – this disease would the the cause of her very young death.   She initially went back to her home town in an attempt to stall the illness by a change of climate but she died, not long after, on 20 April 1887.   Her Shrine rests at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Como.

Blessed Chiara was Beatified after the approval of a miracle by St Pope John Paul on 21 April 1991 at the Vatican.at-chiara's-deathbed

From the Sisters of the Daughters of St Mary of Providence:

“There is no doubt, that Blessed Chiara contributed with her prayers from heaven, to ensure that Fr Guanella was declared a Saint.   We know that Blessed Chiara had a crucial influence on the Founder’s journey to sainthood.   Still today, those who kneel before their urns at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Como, cannot but receive that holy incentive, to integrate hard-working charity, with the contemplation of the sources, from which the grace of our activity comes.
May the memory of Sr Chiara’s Beatification revive in all of us, gratitude to the Lord for our holy origins.   Faithfulness to living their spirit and putting it into practice will increase our faith and love.
Walking towards holiness together, as Fr Guanella, Sr Chiara and all the good people of God did, will reinforce communion and collaboration among the people of God.
We also want to renew our commitment of spreading the devotion to Blessed Chiara and to ask our Blessed for her intercession, so that her holiness may be proposed to the entire Christian world with her Canonisation.
St Luigi Guanella loved Sr Chiara.
In the beginning he was puzzled by her religious life-style.   He had an inspiration that Sr Chiara was a mystic and was, therefore, moved to intensely study the works of St Theresa of Avila.   From then on, he understood that Sr Chiara was a saint and a mystic. She was the “little flower” of Guanellian spirituality.
Fr Guanella wrote a biography of Blessed Chiara.   It is available at the St Louis Centre upon request.”BL CHIARA BOSSATTA

“There is more joy in heaven over a converted sinner
than over a righteous person standing firm.
A leader in battle has more love for a soldier

than for one who never turned back

Thought for the Day – 24 October – The Memorial of St Luigi Guanella (1842-1915)

St Luigi and St Joseph – “The Pious Union of St Joseph”

In his daily life, Fr Guanella had a great devotion to St Joseph, custodial father of Jesus and safeguard of the virginity of Mary, his wife, the Mother of God.   He reminded his priests and nuns that St Joseph is the administrator of all their homes.   All superiors must have the love and care of St Joseph, as well as the kindness and gentleness of Mary, in dealing with the residents.

His love and care had no limit.   His dear impaired people were assisted to the very end. When he was home, it was his duty to give his blessing for the dying.   His motto was, “Let us give them bread and paradise” and this was implanted in the hearts of all his nuns and priests.

In Rome, six years before his death and physically tired by his work, Fr Guanella was inspired to build a Church and start an Association in honour of St Joseph, patron of the dying.   Pope Pius X, a very close friend, expressed a desire to have a church in Trionfale, a very poor area near the Vatican.   The Pope’s desire strengthened Fr Guanella’sown ideas.   Trusting to divine providence, he put a down payment on the land and the foundation was immediately begun.   On the property, there was a barn which became the first Chapel of St Joseph.   The people called it the ‘Basilichetta’ (small Basilica.)     In 1912, Fr Guanella announced to the Pope that the Church was completed in honour of St Joseph and His Holiness, whose baptismal name was Joseph Sarto.

The Pope admired Fr Guanella for his courage and devotion to St Joseph and when he heard about the Pious Union Association of prayers for the dying, he said to Fr Luigi, “Please make me the first member.”

PiusX

In 1913, Pope Pius X gave his approval, making the Church of the Pious Union the main centre for all the universal church.   His beloved Pope Pius X died in 1914, one year before Fr Guanella’s own death.   The two saints understood each other so well.

Saint of the Day – 24 October – St Luigi Guanella (1842-1915) “Servant of Charity”

Saint of the Day – 24 October – St Luigi Guanella (1842-1915) – Priest, Founder, Apostle of Charity, Marian devotee, Eucharistic Adorer and passionate apostle – born Aloysius Guanella on 9 December 1842 in Fraciscio di Campodolcino, Sondrio, diocese of Como, Italy and died on 24 October 1915 (aged 72) in Como, Italy of complications from a stroke he suffered on 27 September 1915.   Founder of the Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence (1890) and the Servants of Charity (24 March 1908) alongside his friends Fr David Albertario (1846-1902) and Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo (1845-1918).   Guanella also founded the Pious Union of Saint Joseph (1914) with his supporter and first member St Pope Pius X.   These religious communities focused on the relief of the poor throughout the world.   The Servants of Charity motto reads “In Omnibus Charitas”  – “In all things Love” which became the cornerstone for Guanella’s own life.   Patronages – Daughters of Saint Mary of Providence, Servants of Charity and the Pious Union of Saint Joseph.Guanella2

Louis Guanella was born in Fraciscio di Campodolcino in Val San Giacomo (Sondrio) on 19 December 1842.   The particular geographical location where he grew up, formed Louis into a solid character – firm, temperate and with a spirit of sacrifice.   He was always distinguished for his great faith, strengthened by popular piety, a faith alive for its closeness to the poor and simple.st luigi very young

He studied at the Gallio College in Como and in various diocesan seminaries.   In 1866 he was ordained priest and, soon after, appointed parish priest at Savogno.   He dedicated himself zealously to young people busying himself with helping them in their schooling and revitalising Catholic Action.bl luigi priest beautiful

He was in contact with St Don Bosco SDB (1815-1888) at the time.   Fascinated by the Salesian charism, he tried opening a College for the young but the operation didn’t go ahead.   However, he wanted to stay with Don Bosco and in 1875 became a Salesian.   He was in charge of the “Saint Aloysius” Oratory in Turin and soon after was appointed Rector of the “Dupraz” College in Trinità (Cuneo).   He remained in the Salesian Congregation for just three years, because the Lord had arranged otherwis -: the bishop in fact called him back to the diocese.   Louis had no fear of defending young people and the poor even in front of the powerful and the politicians.

This was another reason why he had to close the school he had opened for poor children in Traona.   Sent by the bishop to look after a hostel for poor elderly people, he founded a group of Ursulines there, whom he organised into a Congregation – the Daughters of Holy Mary of Providence.   The new Congregation was dedicated to the education of youth, especially those who were poor and on the margins but also, to support and be with poor elderly folk.   In Como he founded the House of Divine Providence, at the centre of which he built a Shrine to the Sacred Heart.   With support from the bishop he also founded a male branch – The Servants of Charity, with the same aims.bl luigi header

His Congregations flourished in Italy, Switzerland and the United States.   In support of the dying he founded the Pia Unione del Transito  – Pious Union of Saint Joseph.   He built various churches and works for emigrants and fringe-dwellers.

What he gained from his experience with Don Bosco was not only a love for the young that he carried with him all his life but in particular, blind obedience and sacrifice in his relationships with his superiors.   Like Don Bosco he was obedient to the bishop even when it meant suffering and misunderstanding.   He died at Como 24 October 1925. luigi

Declared Venerable on 6 April 1962, Beatified on 25 October 1964 by Paul VI and Canonised on 23 October 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI.st luigi canonisation tapestry

Thought for the Day – 24 October – The Memorial of St Luigi Guanella (1842-1915)

The human and spiritual testimony of St Luigi Guanella is a special gift of grace for the whole Church.   During his earthly life he lived with courage and determination the Gospel of Love and the “great commandment”, which today too, the Word of God has recalled.   Thanks to the profound and continuing union with Christ, in the contemplation of his love, Don Guanella, led by Divine Providence, became a companion and teacher, comfort and support to the poorest and weakest.   The love of God aroused in him the desire for the good of the people who were entrusted to him in the routine of daily life.   He paid caring attention to each one and respected the pace of their development.   He cultivated the hope in his heart that every human being, created in the image and likeness of God, by tasting the joy of being loved by him — Father of all — can receive and give to others the best of himself.

Today, let us praise and thank the Lord, who gave us a prophet and an apostle of love in St Luigi Guanella.   In his testimony, so full of humanity and attention to the least, we recognise a bright sign of the presence and charitable action of God, the God — as we heard in the First Reading — who defends the stranger, the widow, the orphan, the poor person obliged to give his garment in pledge… his only covering for the night (cf. Ex 22:20-26).

May this new Saint of love be for everyone, especially for the members of the Congregations founded by him, a model of profound and fruitful synthesis between contemplation and action that he himself lived and put into practice.   We can summarise his whole human and spiritual life in his last words on his death-bed:  “in caritate Christi” “in Christ’s charity.”.   It is Christ’s love that illumines the life of every person, revealing through the gift of himself to others that nothing is lost but is fully realized for our happiness.   May St Luigi Guanella obtain that we may grow in friendship with the Lord to be bearers of the fullness of God’s love in our time, to promote life in all of its forms and conditions and to ensure that human society increasingly become the family of God’s children…… HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI – Saint Peter’s Square, Canonisation of St Luigi Guanella, Sunday, 23 October 2011
