Our Morning Offering – 16 August – Save Us, O Mary!

Our Morning Offering – 16 August – “The Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary”

Save Us, O Mary!
By Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)
(Pontiff 1939-1958)

O Virgin, fair as the moon,
delight of the Angels and Saints in Heaven,
grant that we may become like you
and that our souls may receive a ray of your beauty,
which does not decline with the years
but shines forth into eternity.
O Mary, sun of Heaven,
restore life where there is death
and enlighten spirits, where there is darkness.
Turn your countenance to your children
and radiate on us your light and your fervour.
O Mary, powerful as an army,
grant victory to our ranks.
We are very weak
and our enemy rages with uttermost conceit.
But under your banner
we are confident of overcoming him. ….
Save us, O Mary,
fair as the moon,
bright as the sun,
awe-inspiring as an army set in battle array
and sustained not by hatred
but by the ardour of love.
Amen

Quote/s of the Day – 14 April – “The Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary” and Mary’s Day – Sirach 24:14 -16, John 19:25-27

Behold, thy mother”

John 19:27

“Go to Mary and sing her praises
and you will be enlightened.
For it is through her,
that the true Light
shines on the
sea of this life.”

St Ildephonsus (607-670)

O Mary,
you give assistance
to everyone endeavouring
to rise to God!

St Bridget of Sweden (c 1303 – 1373)

Wherefore, in the same holy bosom
of His most chaste Mother,
Christ took to Himself flesh
and united to Himself,
the spiritual Body formed
by those who were to believe in Him.
Hence Mary, carrying the Saviour
within her, may be said,
to have also carried, all those.
whose life was contained
in the life of the Saviour.
Therefore, all we,
who are united to Christ
and, as the Apostle says,
are members of His body,
of His flesh and of His bones (Eph 5:30),
have issued from the womb of Mary,
like a body united to it’s Head.

St Pius X (1835-1914)
Pope from 1903 to 1914

Encyclical “Ad diem illum laetissimum” #10-11

Quote/s of the Day – 8 April – Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows – Friday of Passion Week, the Fifth Week in Lent

Whoever you are, who love the Mother of God,
take note and reflect
with all your innermost feelings,
upon her, who wept for the Only-Begotten as He died…
The grief she felt in the Passion of her Son,
goes beyond all understanding.

St Amadeus of Lausanne (1108-1159)

During the entire course of her life,
the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
never deviated in the slightest
from the precepts and examples of her Divine Son.
This was true both in the most sweet joys Mary experienced
and in the cruel sufferings she underwent,
which made the the Queen of Martyrs.”

Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

“If you want to assist at Mass,
with devotion and with fruit,
think of the sorrowful Mother
at the feet of her Son on Calvary
.”

Quote/s of the Day – 9 January – The Family

Quote/s of the Day – 9 January – Sunday withi the Octave of Epiphany and the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

… The family is not made for society;
rather, it is society, which is made for the family.

“Christian mothers,
if only you knew the future of distress and peril,
of shame ill-restrained,
that you prepare for your sons and daughters
in imprudently accustoming them,
to live hardly clothed
and in making them lose the sense of modesty,
you should be ashamed of yourselves!
and of the harm done the little ones
whom heaven entrusted to your care,
to be reared in Christian dignity and culture.”

Below the knee,
halfway down the arm
and two finger widths
below the collarbone.

“Since God has given the family its existence,
its dignity, its social function,
it must answer to God for them.
Its rights and its privileges are inalienable …
It has the duty,
primarily, before God
and secondarily, before society,
to defend, to vindicate
and to promote effectively,
these rights and these privileges,
not only for its own good
but, for the glory of God
and the welfare of the community
.”

“There is no surer means
of calling down God’s blessing
upon the family,
than the daily recitation
of the Rosary.

Quote/s of the Day – 15 December – “Month of the Immaculate Conception” – The Octave Day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

“I am the Immaculate Conception.”

Our Lady of Lourdes to St Bernadette
25 March 1858

“He came down into the Virgin’s womb,
a womb unstained, unspotted,
hallowed by the touch of divine unction.

St Amadeus of Lausanne (1108-1159)

“Enraptured by the splendour of your heavenly beauty
and impelled by the anxieties of the world,
we cast ourselves into your arms,
O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother Mary,
confident of finding in your most loving heart,
appeasement of our ardent desires
and a safe harbour from the tempests
which beset us on every side.

Ven Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

Deign, O Immaculate Virgin
By St Paschasius Radbertus (785–865)

Deign, O Immaculate Virgin,
Mother most pure,
to accept the loving cry of praise
which we send up to you
from the depths of our hearts.
Though they can but add little to your glory,
O Queen of Angels,
you do not despise, in your love,
the praises of the humble
and the poor.
Cast down upon us a glance of mercy,
O most glorious Queen,
graciously receive our petitions.
Through your immaculate purity
of body and mind,
which rendered you so pleasing to God,
inspire us with a love of innocence and purity.
Teach us to guard carefully the gifts of grace,
striving ever after sanctity, so that,
being made like the image of your beauty,
we may be worthy to become the sharers
of your eternal happiness.
Amen

Quote/s of the Day– 31 October – The Blessings of the Holy Rosary

Quote/s of the Day– 31 October – The last day of the “Month of the Holy Rosary”

THE SEVEN BLESSINGS OF THE HOLY ROSARY

The Rosary, recited with meditation on the mysteries, brings about the following marvellous results:

  1. It gradually gives us a perfect knowledge of Jesus Christ;
  2. It purifies our souls, washing away sin;
  3. It gives us victory over all our enemies;
  4. It makes it easy for us to practice virtue;
  5. It sets us on fire with love of Our Blessed Lord;
  6. It enriches us with graces and merits;
  7. It supplies us with what is needed to pay,
all our debts to God and to our fellow men
and finally, it obtains all kinds of graces for us from Almighty God.”

St Louis Marie Grignion De Montfort (1673-1716)

The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer
and the most efficacious means
of attaining eternal life.
It is the remedy for all our evils,
the root of all our blessings.
There is no more excellent way of praying.

Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903)

If there were one million families
praying the Rosary everyday,
the entire world would be saved.

St Pope Pius X (1835-1914)

We put great confidence
in the Holy Rosary,
for the healing of evils
which afflict our times.

Quote/s of the Day – 7 October – “Month of the Holy Rosary” – Memorial of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary/Our Lady of Victory

The greatest method
of praying,
is to pray
the Rosary.

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor of the Church

The salvation of the whole world
began with the “Hail Mary.”
Hence, the salvation of each person
is also attached to this prayer.

St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

Those who say the Rosary daily
and wear the Brown Scapular
and who do a little more,
will go straight to Heaven
.”

St Alphonsus Ligouri (1696-1787)
Doctor of the Church

And so we contemplate
all the great mysteries of His life
and His birth in the manger
and so too, the mysteries of His suffering
and His glorified life.
But even Christians,
with all their knowledge of God,
have usually more awe than love of Him
and the special virtue of the Rosary,
lies in the special way,
in which it looks at these mysteries,
for with all our thoughts of Him
are mingled thoughts of His Mother
and in the relations between Mother and Son,
we have set before us the Holy Family,
the home in which God lived.

St John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

If our age in its pride laughs at
and rejects Our Lady’s Rosary,
a countless legion of the most saintly men
of every age and of every condition,
have not only held it most dear
and have most piously recited it
but, have also used it at all times,
as a most powerful weapon
to overcome the devil,
to preserve the purity of their lives,
to acquire virtue more zealously,
in a word, to promote peace among men.

Pope Pius XI (1857-1939)

There is no surer means
of calling down God’s blessing
upon the family,
than the daily recitation
of the Rosary.

Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

to touch the Heart of Jesus, Our Redeemer,
who loves His Mother.”

St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

Praise of the Rosary
From a sermon of St Francisco Coll

“… Oh Rosary!
You are a book, brief yes
but that teaches the holiest
and most sacred of our Religion.
You are an ark, that conceals a very rich treasure
worthy of all men seeking it with great eagerness.
You are a gift from Heaven,
that you reveal to us the elements of religion,
the principles,
the motives
and the practice of all the virtues,
you light us in charity and love
towards that God
Who so deigned to do and suffer for us.
You wake up the drowsy,
enflame the lukewarm,
you push the lazy,
you embrace the righteous,
you convert sinners,
you reduce or confuse heretics,
you frighten the devil,
you tremble to hell or, to put it better,
you are a devotion
that includes
and contains
all the devotions.”

St Francisco Coll y Guitart OP (1812-1875)
“The Apostle of Modern Times”

“There is no surer means
of calling down God’s blessing
upon the family,
than the daily recitation

of the Rosary.”

Ven Servant of God Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

“The Rosary is the best therapy for these
distraught, unhappy, fearful and frustrated souls,
precisely because it involves,
the simultaneous use of three powers –
the physical, the vocal and the spiritual
and in that order.”

“Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field?
How then has it weeds?

Matthew 13:27

“Every kingdom devided
against itself
is laid waste.”

Luke 11:17

“No-one can have God as his father,
if he does not have the Church as his mother…
The Lord warned us of this when He said:
“Whoever is not with me, is against me
and whoever does not gather together with me, scatters.”
The person who breaks the peace and concord of Christ,
acts against Christ;
the person who gathers together,
outside of the Church,
scatters the Church of Christ.”

St Cyprian of Carthage (c 200- c 258)
Bishop and Martyr, Father of the Church
On the unity of the Church

“It is better to be cured within the Church’s community
than to be cut off from its Body as incurable members.
As long as a member still forms part of the Body,
there is no reason to despair of its cure;
once it has been cut off,
it can be neither cured nor healed.”

St Augustine (354-430)
Father and Doctor of Grace

“And so we pray,
that, by the same grace,
which made the Church Christ’s Body,
all its members may remain firm
in the unity of that Body,
through the enduring bond of love.”

St Fulgentius of Ruspe (c 462 – 533)
Bishop, Father of the Church

“For nothing more glorious,
nothing nobler,
nothing surely, more honourable
can be imagined, than to belong
to the One, Holy Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church,
in which we become members of one Body
as venerable as it is unique;
are guided by one supreme Head;
are filled with one divine Spirit;
are nourished during our earthly exile
by one doctrine and one heavenly Bread,
until at last, we enter into
the one, unending blessedness of heaven.
But lest we be deceived,
by the angel of darkness,
who transforms himself into an angel of light,
let this be the supreme law of our love –
to love the Spouse of Christ,
as Christ willed her to be
and as He purchased her with His Blood.”

Suffer both to grow until the harvest” – – Matthew 13:30

REFLECTION – “Nor must one imagine that the Body of the Church, just because it bears the name of Christ, is made up during the days of its earthly pilgrimage, only of members conspicuous for their holiness, or, that it consists only of those whom God has predestined to eternal happiness. It is owing to the Saviour’s infinite mercy, that place is allowed in His Mystical Body here below, for those whom, of old, He did not exclude from the banquet (cf. Mt 9:11). For not every sin, however grave it may be, is such as of its own nature to sever a man from the Body of the Church, as does schism or heresy or apostasy. Men may lose charity and divine grace through sin, thus becoming incapable of supernatural merit and yet, not be deprived of all life, if they hold fast to faith and Christian hope and if, illumined from above, they are spurred on, by the interior promptings of the Holy Spirit to salutary fear and are moved to prayer and penance for their sins.

Let everyone then abhor sin, which defiles the mystical members of our Redeemer but,, if anyone unhappily falls and his obstinacy has not made him unworthy of communion with the faithful, let him be received with great love and let eager charity see in him a weak member of Jesus Christ. For, as the Bishop of Hippo remarks –
“it is better to be cured within the Church’s community than to be cut off from its Body as incurable members. As long as a member still forms part of the Body, there is no reason to despair of its cure; once it has been cut off, it can be neither cured nor healed.’”- Venerable Pius XII (1876-1958) – Pope from 1939 to 1958 – Encyclical – Mystici Corporis Christi, 1943

PRAYER – All-powerful and ever-living God, splendour of true light and never-ending day, chase away the night of sin and fill our minds with the glory of Your coming. Take away our heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh, help us in our battle with sin and the devil. By our prayers, Your holy sacraments and the strength of the Holy Spirit, may we be ever vigilant of the evil one. Hear the prayers of our Queen and Mother, the Blessed Virgin of Mercy on our behalf dear Lord. We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 22 February – The Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter

“The Church, instituted by the Lord
and confirmed by the Apostles, is one for all men;
but the frantic folly of the diverse impious sects,
has cut them off from her.
It cannot be denied, that this tearing asunder of the faith,
has arisen from the defect of poor intelligence,
which twists what is read,
to confirm to its opinion,
instead of adjusting its opinion
to the meaning of what is read.
However, while individual parties fight among themselves,
the Church stands revealed,
not only by her own doctrines
but by those also, of her adversaries.
And although they are all ranged against her,
she confutes the most wicked error
which they all share,
by the very fact that she is alone and one.
All the heretics, therefore,
come against the Church
but while all the heretics can conquer each other,
they can win nothing for themselves.
For their victory is the triumph of the Church over all of them.
One heresy struggles against that teaching of another,
which the faith of the Church
has already condemned in the other heresy –
for there is nothing which the heretics hold in common, –
and, the result is that they affirm our faith,
while fighting among themselves.”

St Hilary (315-368)
Bishop of Poitiers
Father and Doctor of the Divinity of Christ

Quote/s of the Day – 1 February – “Month of the Holy Family of Nazareth”

“Thus, parents, I say, are more vicious,
more cruel than child-murderers;
for, a murderer of children, as Herod was,
separates only the body from the soul;
while the others, give the souls and bodies of their children
to eternal flames!
Further, those who are killed
would have died in the course of time,
though they had not been murdered;
while children, neglected by their parents,
might have avoided eternal death,
had not the wickedness of their parents
prepared it for them.
Besides this, the general resurrection
would have compensated for the bodily death,
while the death and destruction of the soul,
nothing can restore.
A child, condemned by the parent’s fault,
has no hope of salvation
but has to suffer eternal pains.
Hence I am right in saying,
that such parents are worse than child-murderers.”

Quote/s of the Day – 19 January – ‘A Day Will Come …’

Quote/s of the Day – 19 January – the Memorial of St Wulfstan (c 1008–1095) Bishop of Worcester

This is true love of Christ and His Church.
O Lord, send us such men in our day, where have they gone!?
Today, those we have, are hiding behind closed doors and locking the Churches from the faithful, withholding the Sacraments or reporting souls for not complying with satanic rules. They are co-operating in evil schemes to subject all peoples to a totalitarian rule, turning the sheep of the Good Shepherd, into goats, who will be cast into the flames!

“Let the man truly possessed by the love of Christ
keep His commandments.
Who can express the binding power of divine love?
Who can find words for the splendour of its beauty?
Beyond all description are the heights to which it lifts us.
Love unites us to God;
it cancels innumerable sins,
has no limits to its endurance,
bears everything patiently.
Love is neither servile nor arrogant.
It does not provoke schisms or form cliques
but always acts, in harmony with others.
By it, all God’s chosen ones, have been sanctified;
without it, it is impossible to please Him.
Out of love, the Lord took us to Himself
because He loved us
and it was God’s will,
our Lord Jesus Christ gave His life’s blood for us—
He gave His body for our body,
His soul for our soul.”

St Clement I of Rome (c 35-99)
Martyr for Christ, Bishop of Rome, Apostolic Father

“We unfortunates,
are destroying the works of Saints,
in order to win praise for ourselves.
In that happy age, men were incapable
of building for display;
their way, was to sacrifice themselves to God,
under any sort of roof
and to encourage their subjects,
to follow their example.
But we strive to pile up stones
while neglecting souls.”

St Wulfstan (c 1008–1095)
Bishop of Worcester

“He who is not ANGRY
when there is just cause for anger is IMMORAL.
Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice.
And if you can live amid INJUSTICE WITHOUT ANGER,
you are IMMORAL, as well as, UNJUST.”

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Doctor Angelicus
Doctor Communis

“Better that only a few Catholics should be left,
staunch and sincere in their religion,
than that they should, remaining many,
desire as it were,
to be in collusion with the Church’s enemies
and in conformity
with the open foes of our faith.”

St Peter Canisius (1521-1397)
Doctor of the Church

“The declared enemies of God and His Church,
heretics and schismatics,
must be criticised as much as possible ….
It is a work of charity to shout:
‘Here is the wolf!’
when it enters the flock or anywhere else.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor of Charity

“The sole reason why society is perishing
is because, it has refused to hear
the word of the Church,
which is the word of God.
All plans for salvation will be sterile,
if the great word of the Catholic Church,
is not restored
in all it’s fullness!”

“Woe to me if I do not preach
and warn [sinners],
for I would be held
responsible for their condemnation.”

St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

“A day will come when the civilised world
will deny its God,
when the Church will doubt
as Peter doubted.
She will be tempted to believe
that man has become God.
In our churches,
Christians will search in vain
for the red lamp where God awaits them.
Like Mary Magdalene,
weeping before the empty tomb,
they will ask,
‘Where have they taken Him?’

Quote/s of the Day – 27 December – Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph – On the Family by Pope Pius XII

“Since God has given the family its existence,
its dignity, its social function,
it must answer to God for them.
Its rights and its privileges are inalienable …
It has the duty,
primarily, before God
and secondarily, before society,
to defend, to vindicate
and to promote effectively,
these rights and these privileges,
not only for its own good
but, for the glory of God
and the welfare of the community.”

“ … The family is not made for society;
rather, it is society, which is made for the family.”

“God did not create a human family
made up of segregated, dissociated,
mutually independent members.
No; He would have them all united
by the bond of total love of Him
and consequent self-dedication
to assisting each other
to maintain that bond intact.”

“Christian mothers,
if only you knew the future of distress and peril,
of shame ill-restrained,
that you prepare for your sons and daughters
in imprudently accustoming them,
to live hardly clothed
and in making them lose the sense of modesty,
you should be ashamed of yourselves!
and of the harm done the little ones
whom heaven entrusted to your care,
to be reared in Christian dignity and culture.”

“With good reason, it has often been pointed out
that large families have been in the forefront
as the cradles of saints.
We might cite, among others,
the family of St Louis, the King of France,
made up of ten children,
that of St Catherine of Siena
who came from a family of twenty-five,
St Robert Bellarmine,
from a family of twelve
and St Pius X from a family of ten.”

“I am the Immaculate Conception.”

Our Lady of Lourdes to St Bernadette
25 March 1858

“Come, then and search out Your sheep,
not through Your servants or hired men
but do it Yourself.
Lift me up bodily and in the flesh,
which is fallen in Adam.
Lift me up not from Sarah but from Mary,
a Virgin not only undefiled
but a Virgin whom grace had made inviolate,
free of every stain of sin.”

St Ambrose (340-397)
Father and Doctor of the Church

“He came down into the Virgin’s womb,
a womb unstained, unspotted,
hallowed by the touch of divine unction.”

St Amadeus of Lausanne (1108-1159)

O Most Holy Virgin
By St Pope Pius X (1835-1914)

Most holy Virgin,
who pleased our Lord and became His Mother,
Virgin Immaculate in your body and soul,
in your faith and love,
at this solemn jubilee of the promulgation of the dogma
which proclaimed you
to the entire world as conceived without sin,
look kindly on us, unfortunate ones,
who implore your powerful protection.
The infernal serpent,
upon whom the primeval curse was laid,
continues, alas, to attack and tempt
the hapless children of Eve.
Ah! Do you, our blessed Mother,
our Queen and Advocate,
who at the first moment of your conception
did crush the enemy’s head,
do you gather together our prayers
and we beseech you (our hearts one with yours),
present them before God’s throne,
that we may never allow ourselves
to be caught in the snares laid for us
but that we may reach the portal of salvation
and that the Church and Christian society
may once more chant the hymn of deliverance,
of victory and of peace.
Amen

“Enraptured by the splendour of your heavenly beauty
and impelled by the anxieties of the world,
we cast ourselves into your arms,
O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother Mary,
confident of finding in your most loving heart,
appeasement of our ardent desires
and a safe harbour from the tempests
which beset us on every side.

“O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths!
O fragrant Lily of all holiness,
captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume!
O Conqueress of evil and death,
inspire in us a deep horror of sin,
which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

O well-beloved of God,
hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart.
Bend tenderly over our aching wounds.
Convert the wicked,
dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed,
comfort the poor and humble,
quench hatreds, sweeten harshness,
safeguard the flower of purity in youth,
protect the holy Church,
make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness.”

December – the Month of the Immaculate Conception

December – the Month of the Immaculate Conception

In keeping the Blessed Virgin free from the stain of sin from the moment of her conception, God presents us with a glorious example of what mankind was meant to be.
Mary is truly the second Eve, because, like Eve, she entered the world without sin.
Unlike Eve, she remained sinless throughout her life—a life that she dedicated fully to the will of God.

The Immaculate Conception was not, as many people mistakenly believe, a precondition for Christ’s act of redemption but the result of it.
Standing outside of time, God knew that Mary would humbly submit herself to His will and in His love for this perfect servant, He applied to her at the moment of her conception the redemption, won by Christ, that all Christians receive at their Baptism.

It is appropriate, then, that the Church has long declared the month in which the Blessed Virgin not only was conceived but gave birth to the Saviour of the world as the Month of the Immaculate Conception.

Let us Pray, this theologically rich prayer written by Ven Servant of God Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) in 1954 in honour of the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Enraptured by the splendour of your heavenly beauty and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, O Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart, appeasement of our ardent desires and a safe harbour from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.

O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths!
O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume!
O Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

O well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart. Bend tenderly over our aching wounds.
Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all men feel the attraction of Christian goodness.
In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognise that they are brothers and that the nations are members of one family, upon which, may there shine forth, the sun of a universal and sincere peace.

Receive, O most sweet Mother, our humble supplications and, above all, obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars – You are all-beautiful, O Mary!
You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honour of our people! Amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 26 October – “Month of the Most Holy Rosary”

“The Rosary is a treasure of graces”

Pope Paul V (1550-1621)

“The Rosary is the most powerful weapon
to touch the Heart of Jesus, Our Redeemer,
who loves His Mother.”

-St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

“And so we contemplate
all the great mysteries of His life
and His birth in the manger
and so too, the mysteries of His suffering
and His glorified life.
But even Christians,
with all their knowledge of God,
have usually more awe than love of Him
and the special virtue of the Rosary,
lies in the special way,
in which it looks at these mysteries,
for with all our thoughts of Him
are mingled thoughts of His Mother
and in the relations between Mother and Son,
we have set before us the Holy Family,
the home in which God lived.”

St John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

Praise of the Rosary
From a sermon of St Francisco Coll

… Oh Rosary!
You are a book, brief yes
but that teaches the holiest
and most sacred of our Religion.
You are an ark, that conceals a very rich treasure
worthy of all men seeking it with great eagerness.
You are a gift from Heaven,
that you reveal to us the elements of religion,
the principles,
the motives
and the practice of all the virtues,
you light us in charity and love
towards that God
Who so deigned to do and suffer for us.
You wake up the drowsy,
enflame the lukewarm,
you push the lazy,
you embrace the righteous,
you convert sinners,
you reduce or confuse heretics,
you frighten the devil,
you tremble to hell or, to put it better,
you are a devotion
that includes
and contains
all the devotions.”

“Is this not a work of God
and admirable in our eyes?
Yes, yes, it is the work of God
and given to the world,
by the merits of my Father Saint Dominic.”

St Francisco Coll y Guitart OP (1812-1875)
“The Apostle of Modern Times”

“There is no surer means
of calling down God’s blessing
upon the family,
than the daily recitation
of the Rosary.”

Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

“The Rosary is the best therapy for these
distraught, unhappy, fearful and frustrated souls,
precisely because it involves,
the simultaneous use of three powers –
the physical, the vocal and the spiritual
and in that order.

Venerable Fulton J Sheen (1895-1979)

“The Rosary is the scourge of the devil.”

Pope Adrian VI (1459-1523)

“Among all the devotions
approved by the Church,
none has been favoured
by so many miracles,
as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary.”

Blessed Pope Pius IX (1792-1878)

“If there were one million families
praying the Rosary everyday,
the entire world would be saved.”

Saint Pope Pius X (1835-1914)

“The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer
and the most efficacious means
of attaining eternal life.
It is the remedy for all our evils,
the root of all our blessings.
There is no more excellent way of praying.”

Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903)

“The Rosary is a powerful weapon
to put the demons to flight
and to keep oneself from sin…
If you desire peace in your hearts,
in your homes
and in your country,
assemble each evening to recite the Rosary.
Let not even one day pass without saying it,
no matter how burdened you may be
with many cares and labours.”

Pope Pius XI (1857-1939)

“We put great confidence
in the Holy Rosary,
for the healing of evils
which afflict our times.”

“O sinner, be not discouraged
but have recourse to Mary,
in all your necessities.
Call her to your assistance,
for such is the divine Will
that she should help
in every kind of necessity.”

St Basil the Great (329-379)
Father and Doctor of the Church

“O Mary, I have not doubt
that whenever we run to you,
we shall obtain all that we desire.
Let those then who have no hope,
hope in you!”

“In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties,
think of Mary, call upon Mary.
Let not her name depart from your lips,
never suffer it to leave your heart.
And that you may obtain the assistance of her prayer,
neglect not to walk in her footsteps.
With her for guide, you shall never go astray;
while invoking her, you shall never lose heart;
so long as she is in your mind,
you are safe from deception;
while she holds your hand, you cannot fall;
under her protection you have nothing to fear;
if she walks before you, you shall not grow weary;
if she shows you favour, you shall reach the goal.”

St Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153)
Mellifluous Doctor of the Church

“Has anyone ever come away from Mary,
troubled or saddened or ignorant
of the heavenly Mysteries?
Who has not returned to everyday life
gladdened and joyful
because a request has been granted
by the Mother of God?”

St Amadeus of Lausanne (1110-1159)

“Mary means Star of the sea,
for as mariners are guided to port
by the ocean star,
so Christians attain to glory,
through Mary’s maternal intercession.”

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Doctor Angelicus
Doctor Communis

“Let us run to Mary
and, as her little children,
cast ourselves into her arms
with a perfect confidence.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor Caritatis

”It seems unbelievable,
that a man should perish,
in whose favour Christ said to His Mother:
‘Behold thy son’,
provided, that he has not turned
a deaf ear to the words,
which Christ addressed to him:
‘Behold thy Mother.’”

St Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621)
Doctor of the Church

“For God, having given her power
over His only-begotten and natural Son,
also gave her power over His adopted children –
not only in what concerns their body –
which would be of little account –
but also in what concerns their soul.”

St Louis Marie de Montfort (1673-1716)

”To desire grace
without recourse to the Virgin Mother
is to desire to fly without wings.”

“Every Saint belongs
to the court
of the Queen of All Saints.”

St John Eudes (1501-1680)

“Let all the children of the Catholic Church,
who are so very dear to us, hear these words of ours.
With a still more ardent zeal for piety, religion and love,
let them continue to venerate,
invoke and pray to the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, conceived without original sin.
Let them fly with utter confidence
to this most sweet Mother of mercy and grace
in all dangers, difficulties, needs, doubts and fears.
Under her guidance,
under her patronage,
under her kindness and protection,
nothing is to be feared; nothing is hopeless.
Because, while bearing toward us a truly motherly affection
and having in her care, the work of our salvation,
she is solicitous about the whole human race.
And since, she has been appointed by God,
to be the Queen of heaven and earth
and is exalted above all the choirs of angels and saints
and, even stands at the right hand,
of her only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
she presents our petitions in a most efficacious manner.
What she asks, she obtains.
Her pleas can never be unheard!”

Bl Pius IX (1792-1878)

Ineffabilis Deus
(which proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December 1854)

“To serve the Queen of Heaven
is already to reign there
and to live under her commands,
is more than to govern.”

St John Vianney (1786-1859)

“She is more Mother than Queen.”

St Therese of the Child Jesus (1873-1897)
Doctor of the Church

“With the certainty of faith,
we know that Jesus Christ is king in the full,
literal and absolute sense of the word;
for He is true God and man.
This does not, however, prevent Mary
from sharing His royal prerogatives,
though in a limited and analogous manner;
for she was the Mother of Christ
and Christ is God and she shared
in the work of the divine Redeemer,
in His struggles against enemies
and in the triumph He won over them all.
From this union with Christ the King
she assuredly obtains so eminent a status
that she stands high above all created things
and upon this same union with Christ
is based that royal privilege,
enabling her to distribute the treasures
of the kingdom of the divine Redeemer.”

Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

Excerpted from Ad Caeli Reginam

Mary … as the Mother of our Lord,
comes nearer to Him
than any angel,
nearer even than the Seraphim
who surround Him and cry continuall,
“Holy Holy Holy” …
The Blessed Mother of God
has hosts of angels who do her service
and she is their Queen.”

“Her Son will deny her nothing that she asks
and herein lies her power.
While she defends the Church,
neither height nor depth,
neither men nor evil spirits,
neither great monarchs,
nor craft of man,
nor popular violence,
can avail to harm us;
for human life is short
but Mary reigns above,
a Queen forever.”

St John Henry Newman CO (1801-1890)

Mary Our Strength
By Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)
(Pontiff 1939-1958)

O Virgin, fair as the moon,
delight of the angels and saints in heaven,
grant that we may become like you
and that our souls may receive a ray of your beauty,
which does not decline with the years
but shines forth into eternity.
O Mary, sun of heaven,
restore life where there is death
and enlighten spirits, where there is darkness.
Turn your countenance to your children
and radiate on us your light and your fervour.
O Mary, powerful as an army,
grant victory to our ranks.
We are very weak
and our enemy rages with uttermost conceit.
But under your banner
we are confident of overcoming him. ….
Save us, O Mary,
fair as the moon,
bright as the sun,
awe-inspiring as an army set in battle array
and sustained not by hatred
but by the ardour of love.

REFLECTION – “Holiness begins from Christ and Christ is its cause.   For no act, conducive to salvation, can be performed unless it proceeds from Him as from its supernatural source.   “Without me,” He says, “you can do nothing.”(Jn 15:5).   If we grieve and do penance for our sins if, with filial fear and hope, we turn again to God, it is because He is leading us.   Grace and glory flow from His inexhaustible fullness…

When the Sacraments of the Church are administered by external rite, it is He who produces their effect in souls.   He nourishes the redeemed with His own flesh and blood and thus calms the turbulent passions of the soul;  He gives increase of grace and prepares future glory for souls and bodies.

Christ our Lord wills the Church to live His own supernatural life and by His divine power permeates His whole Body and nourishes and sustains each of the members, according to the place which they occupy in the body, in the same way as the vine, nourishes and makes fruitful the branches, which are joined to it. Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of the sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you, Queen of the Universe.

Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, comfort the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten hardness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy church, make all men feel the attractions of Christian goodness.   In your name, resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognise that they are brothers and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth, the sun of a universal and sincere peace.

Receive, O most sweet Mother, our humble supplications and above all, obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne, that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars – You are all-beautiful, O Mary!   You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honour of our people! Amen.

The above prayer, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, was composed … for the Marian year of 1954, which was proclaimed to mark the Centenary of the definition of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

One Minute Reflection – 22 August – ‘She stands high above all created things’

One Mi  nute Reflection – 22 August – The Memorial of The Queenship of Mary, Holy Mother of God – Today’s Gospel: Luke 1:26–38

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be to me, according to your word.” And the angel departed from her...Luke 1:38luke-1-38-mary-said-behold-i-am-the-heandmaid-of-the-lord-4-may-2018.jpg

REFLECTION – “With the certainty of faith we know that Jesus Christ is king in the full, literal and absolute sense of the word; for He is true God and man.   This does not, however, prevent Mary from sharing His royal prerogatives, though in a limited and analogous manner; for she was the Mother of Christ and Christ is God and she shared in the work of the divine Redeemer, in His struggles against enemies and in the triumph He won over them all.   From this union with Christ the King she assuredly obtains so eminent a status that she stands high above all created things and upon this same union with Christ is based that royal privilege, enabling her to distribute the treasures of the kingdom of the divine Redeemer.   And lastly, this same union with Christ is the fountain of the inexhaustible efficacy of her motherly intercession, in the presence of the Son and of the Father.
Without doubt, then, does our holy Virgin possess a dignity that far transcends all other creatures.   In the eyes of her Son, she takes precedence over everyone else. In order to help us understand the pre-eminence that the Mother of God enjoy,s over all creation, it would help to remember that from the first moment of her conception, the holy Virgin was filled with such a plenitude of grace as to surpass the graces, enhancing all the saints.   Recall what our predecessor Pius IX, of blessed memory, wrote in his Bull Ineflabilis Deus: “More than all the angels and all the saints has God ineffable freely endowed Mary with the fullness of the heavenly gifts that abound in the divine treasury and she, preserving herself ever immaculately clean, from the slightest taint of sin, attained a fullness of innocence and holiness, so great, as to be unthinkable apart from God Himself, a fullness that no one other than God will ever possess.”…Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) – Excerpted from Ad Caeli Reginamfrom-this-union-with-christ-the-king-ven-pius-xii-22-aug-2018-mem-of-mary-queen.jpg

PRAYER – Almighty God, our Father, You have given us Mary, the Mother of Your Son, to be our Mother and our Queen.   Grant that, supported by her prayers, we may come to the kingdom of heaven and to the glory destined for Your children.   We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.mary queen - pray for us.jpg

Our Morning Offering – 3 August – Saturday of the Seventeenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C and a Marian Saturday

Mary Our Strength
By Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)
(Pontiff 1939-1958)

O Virgin, fair as the moon,
delight of the angels and saints in heaven,
grant that we may become like you
and that our souls may receive a ray of your beauty,
which does not decline with the years
but shines forth into eternity.
O Mary, sun of heaven,
restore life where there is death
and enlighten spirits, where there is darkness.
Turn your countenance to your children
and radiate on us your light and your fervour.
O Mary, powerful as an army,
grant victory to our ranks.
We are very weak
and our enemy rages with uttermost conceit.
But under your banner
we are confident of overcoming him. ….
Save us, O Mary,
fair as the moon,
bright as the sun,
awe-inspiring as an army set in battle array
and sustained not by hatred
but by the ardour of love.
