I see one of today’s saints is St. Buithe of Monasterboice.
There is a most magnificant stone carved cross in Monasterboice which dates back to the pre Norman period in Ireland. There is an old cemetary there and some ruined remains of church buildings. The cemetary is still in use denoting an unbroken Christian heritage of nearly 1500 years. This place is almost unknown to anyone except local people, but should be included with all the world treasures.
The cross of Christ reigns quietly and seems forgotten at times, but He never forgets us.
The name Monasterboice is an English corruption of the Gaelic Monaisteir Buithe, which translates as Buithe’s monastery or hermitage. (Neither term is really accurate, as a monastery in the ancient Irish church had a very different character to what we now think of as a monastery).
