“The night is far advanced; the day is at hand.” Romans 13:12

REFLECTION – “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say, Rejoice !” (Phil 4:4). A double joy motivated by a double blessing – the First and the Second Coming. We should rejoice because, at His First Coming, the Lord brought riches and glory to us. We should rejoice again because, at His Second Coming, He will give us “length of days forever and ever” (Ps 20:5) As the Book of Proverbs says: “Long life is in her right hand, in her left, are riches and honour” (Ps 20:5). The left hand is the First Coming with its splendid riches – humility and poverty, patience and obedience. The right hand is the Second Coming with eternal life!

Isaiah speaks about the First Coming in these words: “Awake, awake! Put on strength, O Arm of the Lord! Awake as in the days of old, in ages long ago. Was it not Thou Who crushed Rahab, Thou Who pierced the dragon? Was it not Thou Who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, Who made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?” (Is 51:9-10). The Arm of the Lord is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, through Whom and in Whom God created all things … O Arm of the Lord, O Son of God, awake! Come to us from the Father’s glory, assuming our flesh. Clothe Thyself with the strength of Divinity to do battle against the “prince of this world” (Jn 12:31) and “to cast out the strong one” Thou Who are “stronger than he” (Lk 11:21-22). Awake to redeem humankind as in days of old, Thou delivered the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt … Thou dried up the Red Sea – what Thou did then Thou will do again … as Thou made the way in the depths of hell for the redeemed to pass through (Is 25:8).” – St Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) FDoctor of the Church (Sermons for Sundays and Feast Days).

PRAYER – O God, Who, by the message of an Angel, willed to take flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant that we, Thy suppliants, who believe her to be truly the Mother of God, may be helped by her intercession with Thee. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen (Collect).

St Peter Chrysologus (c 400-450) “Golden Words” Confessor,, Father & Doctor of the Church – Bishop of Ravenna, Italy. Today we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Peter Chrysologus, a fifth-century Italian Bishop known for testifying courageously to Christ’s full humanity and divinity during a period of the heresy called “Monophysite.”
The saint’s title, Chrysologus, signifies “golden speech” in Greek. Named as a Doctor of the Church in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII., he is distinguished as the “Doctor of Homilies” for the concise but theologically rich reflections he delivered during his time as the Bishop of Ravenna.
176 of his sermons have survived – it is the strength of these beautiful explanations of the Incarnation, the Creed, the place of Mary and John the Baptist in the great plan of salvation, Mary’s perpetual Virginity, the penitential value of Lent, Christ’s Eucharistic presence and the Primacy of St Peter and his successors in the Church.

St Leonard of Port Maurice OFM (1676-1751) Confessor, Priest and Friar of the Friars Minor, reacher – in particular Parish Mission Preacher, Ascetic Writer, Spiritual Director. St Leonard founded many pious societies and confraternities and exerted himself to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Passion of Christ. He was among the few to insist that the concept of the Immaculate Conception of Mary be defined as a Dogma of the Faith. He was Beatified on 19 June 1796 by Pope Pius VI and Canonised on 29 June 1867 by Pope Pius IX.

St Peter of Alexandria (Died 311) Martyr, “The Seal of the Martyrs” Bishop of Alexandria. Tradition attests that the Egyptian Bishop, St Peter, was the last believer to suffer death at the hands of Roman imperial authorities for his faith in Christ. Hence the title “The Seal of the Martyrs.”

Martyrs of Alexandria – 650+- Saints: A group of approximately 650 Christian Priests, Bishops and Laity Martyred together in the persecution of Maximian Galerius. We have the names and a few details only seven of them – Ammonius, Didius, Faustus, Hesychius, Pachomius, Phileas and Theodore. The were born in Egypt and were martyred there in c 311 in Alexandria, Egypt.

Martyrs of Capua – 7 Saints: A group of seven Christians Martyred together. The only details about them to survive are the names – Ammonius, Cassianus, Felicissimus, Nicander, Romana, Saturnin and Serenus. They were martyred in Capua, Campania, Italy, date unknown.

Martyrs of Nicomedia – 6 Saints: A group of six Christians Martyred by Arians. Few details have survived except their names – Marcellus, Melisus, Numerius, Peter, Serenusa and Victorinus. Martyred in 349 in Nicomedia, Bithynia, Asia Minor (modern Izmit, Turkey).

Blessed Gratia of Cattaro OSA (1438-1508) Lay Brother of the Hermits of St Augustine. Gratia was known for his humility, spirit of penance, love of the Eucharist and for his zealous hard labour. Gratia was Beatified in 6 June 1889 by Pope Leo XIII.

Martyrs of Constantinople – 3 Saints: A group of ten Christians who tried to defend an image of Jesus over the Brazen Gate of Constantinople from an attack by Iconoclasts during the persecutions of Emperor Leo the Isaurian. The group of was seized by soldiers, condemned by judges for opposing the emperor, and Martyred. The only details that have survived are three of their names – Julian, Marcian and Maria. They were martyred in 730 at Constantinople (modern Istanbul, Turkey).

November “The Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory”

All Saints Day – (a Holy Day of Obligation) Instituted to honour all the saints, known and unknown. It owes its origin in the Western Church to the dedication of the Roman Pantheon in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs by Pope Saint Boniface IV in 609, the anniversary of which was celebrated at Rome on 13 May. Pope Saint Gregory III Consecrated a Chapel in the Vatican Basilica in honour of All Saints, designating 1 November as their feast. Pope Gregory IV extended its observance to the whole Church. It has a Vigil and Octave and is a Holy Day of Obligation – the eve is popularly celebrated as Hallowe’en. Patronage – Arzignano, Italy.

Saint of the Day – 5 October – Blessed Felicia Meda OSC (1378-1444) Virgin, Nun of the Second Order of St Francis – the Poor Clares, Born in 1378, Milan, Lombardy, Italy and died in 1444, aged 66, at Pisaro, Italy of natural causes. Especially known for founding a Reformed community of Poor Clares under the guidance of St Bernardine of Siena. Felicia’s younger sister became a Poor Clare Nun too and her younger brother became a Franciscan Friar!

Felicia was a descendant of the very distinguished and wealthy family of the Meda. She was born at Milan in Lombardy in 1378. She had good and pious parents who reared the pious and gifted child in the fear of God and left nothing undone which could be of advantage in her spiritual development. In a very short time, she acquired a remarkable command of the Latin language.

She lost both father and mother at a very early age andthereafterunited herself still more intimately with God. When she was twelve years old, she made a vow of perpetual chastity and then entered the Convent of the Poor Clares at St Ursula in Milan.

The devil endeavoured to make Convent life miserable for her by subjecting her to severe temptations and frightful apparitions. But Felicia did not permit herself to be overcome. By fervent prayer and the words of the Psalmist: “O God, come to my assistance! O Lord, make hast to help me!” she put the spirits of darkness to flight and persevered steadfastly in her vocation.

When the Abbess of the Convent died in 1425, the community unanimously chose Felicia as her successor. In this position, she did her utmost, by word, deed and example, to promote the true religious spirit in her community. In this way, its good name spread far and wide, even reaching the ears of Pope Eugene IV. This, in turn, induced the Pope and the Vicar General of the Observant Franciscans, St Bernardine of Siena, to entrust her with the extablishment of a new Convent of Poor Clares at Pesaro.

Despite her advanced age, Felicia and seven companions made the journey from Milan to Pesaro on foot. When the Foundress of the Convent, the Princess of Montefeltro, offered her the carriage in which she had come out to meet the new community, Felicia humbly declined the offer and entered the Town on foot with the rest of her companions.

Felicia spent four years in this new foundation, received a great number of new members and reared and strengthened them in the spirit of their holy Father, St Francis of Assisi. Blessed Seraphina Sforza (1434-1478) remembered on 8 September, later entered this community, and pious legend has it that they have both appeared on the walls of Pisaro to assure their spiritual protection of that City.

Blessed Felicia Meda died in the odour of sanctity in 1444 and many miracles were wrought by God in testimony of the holiness of His servant. Her body was laid to rest in the Convent she had founded. Four hundred years later it was transferred to the Cathedral of Pesaro.

Pope Pius IX solemnly enrolled Blessed Felicia Meda among the Blessed.

Blessed Raymond of Capua OP (c 1330-1399) Priest, “The Second Founder” of the Dominican Order of Preachers, Reformer, Spiritual Director, he worked with St Agnes of Montepulciano and St Catherine of Siena, Hagiographer, Teacher. The important Mystic, Reformer, Doctor of the Church, St Catherine of Siena, accepted him as her spiritual director because of his burning passion for the Church and for the revival of religious life, most especially in their own Order. In 1899 Pope Leo XIII Beatified him, on the 500th anniversary of his death.

St Francis of Assisi OFM (c1181–1226) Confessor, Deacon, Founder, Mystic, Stigmatist, Peacemaker, Preacher ….. In 1224 he received the stigmata during the apparition of Seraphic angels in a religious ecstasy making him the first recorded person in Christian history to bear the wounds of Christ’s Passion. He died during the evening hours of 3 October 1226, while listening to a reading he had requested of Psalm 141. He was Canonised less than 2 years after his death, on 16 July 1228, by Pope Gregory IX. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.

Saint of the Day – 27 August – Blessed Gabriel Mary Nicholas OFM (c1463-1532) Confessor, Priest and Friar of the Friars Minor, Co-founder of the Order of the Annunciation (O.Ann.M). Born in c1463 at Besse, Puy-de-Dôme, France as Gilbert Nicolas and died on 27 August 1532, aged 70, at Rodez, Aveyron, Patronage – of the Order of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Blessed Gabriel was Beatified in 1647 by Pope Innocent X. Also known as – Gilbert Nicolas.

This blessed man belonged to the most outstanding clients of Our Lady in the Franciscan Order. As a result of a sermon on the Immaculate Conception which had been delivered by a member of the Friars Minor, he himself became a Friar of the Order. Due to his great learning and virtues, he was frequently entrusted with the highest offices in the Order.

Gabriel studied at the Convent of Amboise where he was Ordained a Priest. From 1498 until 1502 he served as the gatekeeper of his Convent where he later met Saint Jane de Valois (1464-1505) and he became her Confessor and Spiritual director.

His fame, however, rests on his founding of the Order of the Annunciation, together with St Jane de Valois who is venerated as its mother. The Blessed Mother of God commissioned him to undertake its establishment. He became the protector and spiritual counsellor of the Order, composed its Rules and constitutions, secured many new members and was instrumental in establishing ten Convents. Later, he was given the title of General of the entire Order of the Virgin Mary.

Pope Leo X was so impressed by his devotion to Our Lady that he changed his name from Father Gilbert Nicholas to Father Gabriel Marie of the Annunciation, or Fr Ave Maria. Father Gabriel Mary always closed his letters with the words, “Your servant in Mary.”

The theme of his sermons was always some verse from the Magnificat or from the Hail Mary. He bound himself by vow never to say or do anything which might not be pleasing to his beloved heavenly Queen.

While Blessed Gabriel Mary was guardian in Paris, a professor of theology ventured to attack the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in his presence. Father Gabriel was seized with holy anger. He defended this prerogative of Our Lady with such eloquence that the professor declared himself vanquished.

Father Gabriel Mary died on 27 August 1532, following an academic event in which he had proposed ten questions concerning the prerogatives of Mary and had given his explanation of them. He closed by saying:

“Today I shall see the glorious Mother of God.”

Then Blessed Gabriel Mary began to recite the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin. When he reached the last verse of the Magnificat, he quietly passed away. Pope Innocent granted a Plenary Indulgence to those who would visit the Convent Church in Bourges “on the Feast of SBlessed Gilbert.” A petition has been sent to the Holy See to permit his veneration in the entire Franciscan Order and the cause of his Canonisation is now pending in Rome.

Martyrs of Tomi – 5 Saints: A group of 17 Christians imprisoned and excuted for their faith during the persecutions of Diocletian. They miraculously were unburned by fire and untouched by wild animals. We know the names and a few details on five of them – John, Mannea, Marcellinus, Peter and Serapion. They were tied to stakes and burned alive; they emerged unharmed – thrown to wild animals in the amphitheatre; the animals ignored them; they were beheaded in 304 in Tomi, Mesia (modern Costanza, Romania).

Martyrs of Nagasaki – 14 Beati: A group of fourteen missionaries and Japanese native Christians, who were Martyred together for their faith. They died on 16 August 1627 in Nagasaki, Japan and were Beatified on 7 May 1867 by Pope Pius IX. St Alypius of Thagaste (Died 430) Bishop Bishop of the See of Thagaste (in what is now Algeria) in 394, Confessor, Reformer, Defender of the Faith against heresy, Lawyer, teacher, spiritual advisor. He was a lifelong disciple and friend of Saint Augustine of Hippo and joined him in his conversion (in 386; Confessions 8.12.28) and life in Christianity. St Simplician (c 320-c 401) Archbishop of Milan and Successor of St Ambrose (340-397) Doctor of the Church in the Archdiocese of Milan, Teacher, Catechist, Writer, Mystic.
St Ambrose used to call Simplician father, as a sign of spiritual relationship but they were also great friends. Simplician took also an active part in the conversions of both Alypius of Thagaste and Augustine of Hippo. The meeting between Augustine and Simplican occurred in Milan in 386 and it is recorded in Augustine’s Confessions. After his conversion, Augustine also called Simplician father and in 397 he dedicated to Simplician two books on the issue of predestination, known as De Diversis Quaestionibus ad Simplicianum. St Augustine, remembered and referred to him with deep gratitude, calling him the “spiritual father of my soul” and would submit his own writings to him to review and comment.

Martyrs of Augsburg – 4 Saints: The mother, Hilaria,and three friends of of Saint Afra ofAugsburg. While visiting the tomb of Saint Afra who were seized by the authorities and Martyred when they visited Afra’s tomb – Digna, Eunomia, Euprepia and Hilaria. They were burned alive c 304.

Martyrs of Rome – 5 Saints: A group of Christians Martyred together in the persecutions of Diocletian. We know little more than their names – Crescentian, Juliana, Largio, Nimmia and Quiriacus. They died in c304 in Rome, Italy and were buried on the Ostian Way outside Rome.
