Mary, I love you
St Philip Neri (1515-1595)

Mary, I love you.
Mary, make me live in God,

Thought for the Day – 19 October – The Memorial of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko (1947-1984)

Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko, a priest and martyr,….exercised his generous and courageous ministry beside all those who were working for freedom, for the defence of life and for its dignity. His work at the service of goodness and truth was a sign of contradiction for the regime governing Poland at the time. Love of the Heart of Christ led him to give his life and his witness was the seed of a new springtime in the Church and in society.
If we look at history, we can note how many pages of authentic spiritual and social renewal were written with the crucial contribution of Catholic priests, motivated solely by passion for the Gospel and for human beings and for their true freedom, both religious and civil.
How many initiatives of integral human promotion have been born from the intuition of a priestly heart! (13 June 2010, Pope Benedict XVI)
And so, let us pray for all our priests:

Pope Benedict’s Prayer for Priests

LORD JESUS CHRIST,
Eternal High Priest, You offered Yourself to the
Father on the altar of the Cross and through the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave Your priestly
people a share in Your redeeming sacrifice.
Hear our prayer for the sanctification of our priests.
Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial
priesthood may be ever more conformed to You,
the divine Master.
May they preach the
Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience.
Let them be shepherds according to Your own Heart,
single- minded in service to You and to the Church
and shining examples of a holy, simple and joyful life.
Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Your Mother and ours, draw all priests and the flocks
entrusted to their care to the fullness of eternal life where
You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
AMEN

Salutation of the Blessed Virgin
By St Francis of Assisi (1181–1226)

Hail, holy Lady, most holy Queen,
Mary, Mother of God, ever Virgin;
chosen by the most holy Father in heaven,
consecrated by Him,
with His most holy beloved Son
and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter:
on you descended and in you still remains
all the fullness of grace and every good.
Hail, His Palace; hail, His Tabernacle;
hail, His Robe, hail, His Handmaid;
hail, His Mother;
and hail, all holy Virtues, who,
by the grace and inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
are poured into the hearts of the faithful.
So that, faithless no longer,
they may be made faithful servants of God
through you.

A Love Song
By St Teresa of Jesus

Majestic Sovereign, timeless Wisdom,
Your kindness melts my hard, cold soul.
Handsome Lover, selfless Giver,
Your beauty fills my dull, sad eyes.
I am Yours, You made me.
I am Yours, You called me.
I am Yours, You saved me.
I am Yours, You loved me.
I will never leave Your presence.
Give me death, give me life.
Give me sickness, give me health.
Give me honour, give me shame.
Give me weakness, give me strength.
I will have whatever You give.

By St Teresa of Jesus
(1515-1582) Doctor of the Church

O my God! Source of all mercy!
I acknowledge Your sovereign power.
While recalling the wasted years that are past,
I believe that You, Lord,
can in an instant turn this loss to gain.
Miserable as I am,
yet I firmly believe that You can do all things.

that I may appear before You in “wedding garments.”

Mary, let me love your Jesus
By St Ildephonsus (607-667)

Virgin Mary, hear my prayer:
through the Holy Spirit
you became the Mother of Jesus;
from the Holy Spirit may I too have Jesus.
Through the Holy Spirit
your flesh conceived Jesus;
through the same Spirit
may my soul receive Jesus.
Through the Holy Spirit
you were able to know Jesus,
to possess Jesus,
and to bring Him into the world.
Through the Holy Spirit
may I too come to know your Jesus.
Imbued with the Spirit,
Mary, you could say:
“I am the handmaid of the Lord,
be it done unto me according to your word”;
in the Holy Spirit,
lowly as I am,
let me proclaim the great truths about Jesus.
In the Spirit you now adore Jesus as Lord
and look on Him as Son;
in the same spirit,
Mary, let me love your Jesus.

I am His; I am yours, my good Mother!
By Blessed John Henry Newman

O Mother of Jesus
and my Mother, let me dwell with you,
cling to you and love you with ever-increasing love.
I promise the honour, love and trust of a child.
Give me a mother’s protection,
for I need your watchful care.
You know better than any other,
the thoughts and desires of the Sacred Heart.
Keep constantly before my mind,
the same thoughts, the same desires,
that my heart may be filled with zeal
for the interests of the
Sacred Heart of your Divine Son.
Instill in me a love of all that is noble,
that I may no longer be easily turned to selfishness.
Help me, dearest Mother,
to acquire the virtues that God wants of me:
to forget myself always, to work solely for Him,
without fear of sacrifice.
I shall always rely on your help to be,
what Jesus wants me to be.
I am His; I am yours, my good Mother!
Give me each day your holy and maternal blessing,
until my last evening on earth,
when your Immaculate Heart will present me,
to the heart of Jesus in heaven,
there to love and bless you
and your divine Son for all eternity. Amen

Teach Me Your Ways
Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

Teach me Your way of looking at people:
as You glanced at Peter after his denial,
as You penetrated the heart of the rich young man
and the hearts of Your disciples.

I would like to meet You as You really are,
since Your image changes those with whom You
come into contact.
Remember John the Baptist’s first meeting with You?
And the centurion’s feeling of unworthiness?
And the amazement of all those who saw miracles
and other wonders?

How You impressed Your disciples,
the rabble in the Garden of Olives,
Pilate and his wife
and the centurion at the foot of the cross. . . .

I would like to hear and be impressed
by Your manner of speaking,
listening, for example, to Your discourse in the
synagogue in Capharnaum
or the Sermon on the Mount where Your audience
felt You “taught as one who has authority.”

Teach me Your way O Lord!
Amen

But without faith it is impossible to please him,
for anyone who approaches God must believe
that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him....Hebrews 11:6

REFLECTION – “Oh that we could take that simple view of things, as to feel that the one thing which lies before us is to please God!   What gain is it to please the world, to please the great, even to please those whom we love, compared with this?   What gain is it to be applauded, admired, courted, followed, compared with this one aim, of not being disobedient to a heavenly vision?   What can this world offer comparable with that insight into spiritual things, that keen faith, that heavenly peace, that high sanctity, that everlasting righteousness, that hope of glory, which they have who in sincerity love and follow our Lord Jesus Christ?”…Blessed John Henry Newmanoh that we could take, that simple view - bl john henry - 9 oct 2017

Be with Me Today, O Lord
By Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

May all I do today begin with You, O Lord.
Plant dreams and hopes within my soul,
revive my tired spirit: be with me today.
May all I do today continue with Your help, O Lord.
Be at my side and walk with me:
Be my support today.
May all I do today reach far and wide, O Lord.
My thoughts, my work, my life:
make them blessings for Your kingdom;
let them go beyond today,O God.
Today is new unlike any other day,
for God makes each day different.
Today God’s everyday grace,
falls on my soul like abundant seed,
though I may hardly see it.
Today is one of those days
Jesus promised to be with me,
a companion on my journey,
And my life today, if I trust Him,
has consequences unseen.
My life has a purpose:
I have a mission…I am a link in a chain,
a bond of connection between persons.
God has not created me for naught…”
Therefore I will trust Him.
Whatever, wherever I am,
I can never be thrown away.
God does nothing in vain.
He knows what he is about.

Let me Love You Lord
By St Thérèse of Lisieux

Divine Jesus,
Listen to my prayer.
By my love I want to make You rejoice.
You know well,
I want to please You alone.
Deign to grant my most ardent desire.
I accept the trials of this sad exile
To delight You and to console Your heart.
But change all my works to love,
O my Spouse, my Beloved Saviour.
It’s Your love Jesus, that I crave
it’s Your love that has to transform me.
Put in my heart Your consuming flame,
And I’ll be able to bless You and love You
As they do in Heaven.
I’ll love You with that very love.
With which You have loved me,
Jesus Eternal Word.
Divine Saviour, at the end of my life
come fetch me without the shadow of delay.
Ah! show me Your infinite tenderness
And the sweetness of Your Divine gaze.
With love, Oh! may Your voice call me,
Saying: come, all is forgiven.
Come rest on My heart, My faithful spouse,
you have greatly loved Me.

Eternal Father,
today, while I am fully conscious,
totally lucid and completely free,
I offer You my life with all its mystery and suffering.
Indeed, Eternal Father,
I offer You my life as an ultimate act of love,
as an act of infinite gratitude,
as an act of faith in Your mercy.
My God and Father,
accept this prayer I am making to You now
for the day when You will call me back to You.
If I am unconscious at the final moment of my life,
if anguish and doubt assail me,
if medication prevents me from thinking of You,
I want my last heartbeat to be an act of perfect love,
telling You with Jesus,
“Into Your hands, I commend my spirit.”

Stay With Me, O Lord
St Padre Pio

Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life
and without You I am without fervour.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light
and without You I am in darkness.
Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.
Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much
and alway be in Your company.
Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.
Stay with me, Lord, as poor as my soul is,
I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of Love.
Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late
and the day is coming to a close
and life passes, death, judgment and eternity approach.
It is necessary to renew my strength, so that I will not stop
along the way and for that, I need You.
It is getting late and death approaches, I fear the darkness,
the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows.
O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile!
Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers, I need You.
Let me recognise You as Your disciples did,
at the breaking of the bread,
so that the Eucharistic Communion be the Light
which disperses the darkness,
the force which sustains me,
the unique joy of my heart.
Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death,
I want to remain united to You,
if not by Communion, at least by grace and love.
Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for,
Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will,
Your Heart, Your Spirit, because I love You
and ask no other reward but to love You more and more.
With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth
and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity.

Prayer of St John Chrysostom

O Lord, my God,
I am not worthy
that You should come into my soul,
but I am glad that You have come to me
because in Your loving kindness
You desire to dwell in me.
You ask me to open the door of my soul,
which You alone have created,
so that You may enter into it
with Your loving kindness
and dispel the darkness of my mind.
I believe that You will do this
for You did not turn away Mary Magdalene
when she approached You in tears.
Neither did you withhold forgiveness
from the tax collector
who repented of his sins
or from the good thief
who asked to be received into Your kingdom.
Indeed, You numbered as Your friends
all who came to You with repentant hearts.
O God, You alone are blessed always,
now and forever. Amenprayer of st john chrysostom

And I despise the world

All my fears wilt and die
And my passions are quelled.
If I say Hail Mary;
Devotion grows within me
And sorrow for sin awakens.
When I say Hail Mary

And the dew of consolation
Falls on my soul

Because I say Hail Mary.
And my spirit rejoices
And sorrow fades away

May be the memory, will and affections
Of Jesus.

I pray You
To destroy in me all that is not of You.
Grant that I may live
but in You, by You and for You,
So that I may truly say, with Saint Paul,
“I live – now not I – But Christ lives in me.”transform-me-into-yourself-by-st-john-gabriel-perboyre-1802-1840-11 sept 2017-2

Give me, good Lord a full faith
By St Thomas More

Give me, good Lord,
a full faith and a fervent charity,
a love of You, good Lord,
incomparable above the love of myself;
and that I love nothing to Your displeasure
but everything in an order to You.
Take from me, good Lord,
this lukewarm fashion,
or rather key-cold manner of meditation
and this dullness in praying to You.
And give me warmth, delight and life
in thinking about You.
And give me Your grace
to long for Your holy sacraments
and specially to rejoice
in the presence of Your blessed Body,
sweet Saviour Christ,
in the holy Sacrament of the altar,
and duly to thank You
for Your gracious coming.

Thought for the Day – 9 September – The Memorial of St Peter Claver “A Stunning Hero”

Thought for the Day – 9 September – The Memorial of St Peter Claver “A Stunning Hero”

Fr Claver’s apostolate extended beyond his care for slaves. He became a moral force, indeed, the “Apostle of Cartagena”.   He preached in the city square, gave missions to sailors and traders as well as country missions, during which he avoided, when possible, the hospitality of the planters and owners and lodged in the slave quarters instead.

After four years of sickness, which forced the saint to remain inactive and largely neglected, St Peter Claver died on September 8, 1654. The city magistrates, who had previously frowned at his solicitude for the black outcasts, ordered that he should be buried at public expense and with great pomp.

Peter Claver was canonised in 1888 and Pope Leo XIII declared him the worldwide patron of missionary work among black slaves.

The Holy Spirit’s might and power are manifested in the striking decisions and bold actions of Peter Claver.   A decision to leave one’s homeland never to return reveals a gigantic act of will difficult for us to imagine.   Peter’s determination to serve forever the most abused, rejected and lowly of all people is stunningly heroic.  When we measure our lives against such a man’s, we become aware of our own barely used potential and of our need to open ourselves more to the jolting power of Jesus’ Spirit. (Fr Don Miller OFM)

God our Heavenly Father, You have given us life through the Death and Resurrection of Your Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

Jesus our saving Lord, You came into a world
darkened by man’s sin and gave it light through your teachings,

Holy Spirit, the Breath of God Within us,
You guide and enlighten us and give us the strength of our convictions;

Saint Peter Claver, who became an example for us, You showed us the Love of God
The Light of Christ, and the strength of the Holy Spirit;

We pray now that all we say and do,
in your honor, be a continuation of your work here on earth.

St Peter Claver….pray for us,
St Peter Claver….pray for us,
St Peter Claver….pray for us.

Prayer for Perseverance in Truth
By St HILARY OF POITIERS – (315-368) Father and Doctor

Father, keep us from vain strife of words.
Grant to us constant profession of the Truth!
Preserve us in a true and undefiled faith
so that we may hold fast to that
which we professed when we were baptised
in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
that we may have You for our Father,
that we may abide in Your Son
and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
Amen.

This prayer is an excerpt from a sermon ‘On the Trinity’ by Saint Hilary of Poitiers, a bishop and early Church Father of the fourth century and Doctor of the Church, who struggled valiantly against the Arian heresy, defending the divinity of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity.
