Our Lenten Journey with St Francis de Sales – 24 March – THE ANGELS

Our Lenten Journey with St Francis de Sales – 24 March – Friday of the Fourth Week in Lent and the Feast of St Gabriel the Archangel – Daniel 9:21-26, Luke 1:26-38 – Scripture search here: https://www.drbo.org/

He hath given His Angels charge over thee,
to keep thee in all thy ways.

Psalm 90:11

“At that time, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Luke 1:26-27

THE ANGELS
St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor Caritas

INASMUCH AS GOD continually sends us inspirations by means of His Angels, we may fittingly send back our aspirations, through the same channel. …
Seek to be familiar with the Angels; learn to realise that they are continually present, although invisible.
Especially love and revere the Guardian Angel of the Diocese in which you live, those of the friends who surround you and your own.
Commune with them frequently, join in their songs of praise and seek their protection and help in all you do, spiritual or temporal.

That pious man Peter Faber, the first companion of Saint Ignatius and the first Priest, first preacher and first theological teacher of the Company of the Jesuits, who was a native of our Diocese, (the French region of Savoy) once, passing through this country on his way from Germany, (where he had been labouring for God’s Glory) told, how great comfort he had found, as he went among places infested with heresy, in communing with the Guardian Angels thereof, whose help had often preserved him from danger and softened hearts to receive the Faith.
He spoke with such earnestness that a lady, who, when quite young, heard him, was so impressed that she repeated his words to me only four years ago, sixty years after their utterance! with the utmost feeling.” – (Introduction to the Devout Life – PART II. Containing sundry counsels).

Quote/s of the Day – 2 October – The Holy Guardian Angel

See that you despise not
one of these little ones,
for I say to you
that their Angels in Heaven,
always see the face of My Father.

Matthew 18:10

Be good!
This will make your angel happy.
When sorrows and misfortunes,
physical or spiritual, afflict you,
turn to your Guardian Angel,
with strong trust
and he will help you
.”

St John Bosco (1815-1888)

O Angel of God, whom God
hath appointed to be my Guardian,
enlighten and protect,
direct and govern me.
Amen.

My Oldest Friend
By John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

My oldest friend, mine from the hour
When first I drew my breath,
My faithful friend, that shall be mine,
Unfailing, till my death….

Mine when I stand before the Judge,
And mine, if spared to stay
Within the golden furnace, till
My sin is burn’d away.

And mine, O Brother of my soul,
When my release shall come,
Thy gentle arms shall lift me then,
Thy wings shall waft me home.”

Our Morning Offering – 2 October – Custodes Hominum Psallimus Angelos By St Robert Bellarmine

Our Morning Offering – 2 October – “The Month of the Most Holy Rosary and of the Angels” – Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels

Custodes Hominum Psallimus Angelos
Praise We the Guardian Angels of Men
By St Robert Bellarmine SJ (1542-1621)

Archbishop of Capua, Theologian
Father and Doctor of the Church

Angel-guardians of men,
spirits and powers we sing,
Whom our Father hath sent,
aids to our weakly frame,
Heavenly friends and guides,
help from on high to bring,
Lest we fail through the foeman’s wile.

He, the spoiler of souls,
Angel-traitor of old,
Cast in merited wrath
out of his honoured place,
Burns with envy and hate,
seeking their souls to gain
Whom God’s mercy invites to Heaven.

Therefore, come to our help,
watchful ward of our lives:
Turn aside from the land,
God to thy care confides
Sickness and woe of soul,
yea and what else of ill
Peace of heart to its folk denies.

Now to the Holy Three
praise evermore resound:
Under Whose Hand Divine
resteth the triple world
Governed in wondrous wise,
glory be Theirs and Might
While the ages unending run.
Amen

This Hymn by St Robert Bellarmine, was added to the Roman Breviary in 1608, by command of Pope Paul V. It is for Vespers in the Office for “the Holy Guardian Angels. Double of the second class,” 2 October..

Saints of the Day – 2 October – The Holy Guardian Angels

Saints of the Day – 2 October – The Holy Guardian Angels

The Twelve Works of our Guardian Angel
By St Bonaventure of Bagnoregio OFM (1217-1274)
Confessor, Cardinal Bishop of Albano, Theologian,
Franciscan Minister General
Doctor of the Church

According to Sacred Scripture
there are twelve works of charity
which our guardian Angel does for us.

THE FIRST is to rebuke us for our faults. According to the Book of Judges, Chapter 2, verse 1 – The Angel of the Lord ascends from Galgala to the place of those weeping and says: “I have led you forth from the land of Egypt . . . And you have not heard my voice.

THE SECOND is to absolve us from the bonds of our sins. According to Book of Acts, Chapter 12, verse 7 – The Angel stood by . . . and the chains fell from his hands; yet this must be understood as disposing this to happen.

THE THIRD is to take away from us, those things impeding our progress in goodness, which is signified in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 12, verse 12 – where the Angel struck the first born of Egypt.

THE FOURTH is to constrain those demons afflicting us, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 12, verse 3 – “He chased the demon from my wife,” says Tobias of the Archangel St. Raphael.

THE FIFTH is to teach us, according to the Book of Daniel, Chapter 9, verse 22: – Now I have entered, to teach you and so that you might understand.

THE SIXTH is to reveal secrets, for according to the Book of Genesis, Chapter 18, verse 17 – the three Angels expressed the Mystery of the Trinity and Unity, after which God said: Can I conceal from Abraham what I am about to do?

THE SEVENTH is to console, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 5, verse 13 – Be of a strong spirit, it is nigh, that you are to be cured by God etc..

THE EIGHTH is to comfort us on the way to God, according to Third Book of Kings, Chapter 19, verse 7 – Rise and eat, for a grand way remains for you.

THE NINTH is to lead us forth on this way and to conduct us back to God, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 5, verse 15 – I shall lead and I shall lead him back etc..

THE TENTH is to cast down our enemies, according to the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 37, verse 36 – Having entered, the Angel of the Lord struck upon the camps of the Assyrians etc..

THE ELEVENTH to mitigate our temptations; and this is signified in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 32, verse 24 – where Jacob wrestled with the Angel and was comforted after the match, having accepted his blessing, the nerve of his femur withered up.

THE TWELFTH is to pray for us and to carry our prayers to God, according to the Book of Tobias, Chapter 12, verse 12 – When you were praying with tears . . . I offered your prayer etc.. All of these are the effects of our Guardian Angel’s care of us, on account of which, we ought to be submissive and grateful both to God and the Holy Angels.

Matka Boża Różańcowa / Our Lady of the Rosary, Krakow, Poland (1600s) – First Sunday of October, 2 October:

In the Dominican Basilica of the Trinity in Cracow is a large Chapel dedicated to the Mother of God of the Rosary. The icon on its main Altar, crowned on 2 October 1921, is a copy of the ancient Salus Populi Romani (Health of the Roman People) image in the Basilica of St Mary Major of the Snows in Rome — the icon Pope Gregory the Great carried in procession to end the plague of 597. During the Battle of Lepanto (7 October 571), when ships of a coalition of Christian countries routed the Turkish navy off Greece, Pope Pius V prayed the Rosary with a large group of faithful before the Roman icon. The old image thus became associated with the newer devotion of the Rosary and with saving Europe from Ottoman rule.

Churches throughout Catholic Europe were dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and copies of the Salus Populi Romani proliferated. Cardinal Maciejowski brought such a copy from Rome to Cracow in 1600. The image played a part in the “Polish Lepanto” in 1621, when at Khotyn, Ukraine (then Chocim, Poland) an allied force of Poles, Lithuanians and Ukrainians faced a Turkish army twice its size. On 3 October, the Bishop of Krakow led an hours-long Rosary procession with the holy icon. The entire population joined in. When the Turks gave up their attack and signed a treaty, Our Lady of the Rosary gained another victory. Her feast is celebrated in Krakow on the first Sunday of October.

The Swedish deluge contributed to the destruction of the original image of the Mother of God. T he cult, however, was so strong that a copy of the previous painting was quickly funded.  The present one comes from the 50s and 60s of the 17th century. Numerous votive offerings made on the occasion of receiving favours have also survived from that time.  The oldest exhibited in the Church are dated to 1703, the older ones are in the Archdiocese Museum. The love for the Blessed Mother is also evidenced by the silver dress donated in the 1770s by the Działyński family, and the sceptre of Our Lady of the “Pious Gregory of Pierzchno” foundation at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Thought for the Day – 2 October – Not just One Day but Everyday!

Thought for the Day – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Angels are messengers from God.   The word angel comes from the Greek word for “messenger.”   In a very real way, these powerful spirits point out to us the ways of God. Guardian Angels assist us in work or study.   In times of temptation, these spiritual beings direct us to do good.   St Thomas Aquinas said that angels are the most excellent of creatures because they have the greatest intelligence next to God.

Perhaps the Guardian Angels are best known for protecting us from physical danger but their main role is to care for the salvation of our souls.   It is wonderful to know that God has promised to love, protect and be with us always.   One way he does this is through the care of the angels.   Whenever you meet with danger or discouragement, your Guardian Gngel is your personal, heavenly bodyguard.   The angels also offer prayers to God for us.   Because angels always see and hear God, they can intercede for us.   We should love our Guardian Angels, respect them and pray to them.

In early Christianity there was no feast for the guardian angels, just one for the Archangels.   But in the 15th and 16th centuries, the feast of the Guardian Angels was unofficially celebrated in Austria, Spain and Portugal.   In 1608 Pope Paul V made it a universal feast.   In doing so, he helped to make us aware of the guardian angels, not just one day in October but everyday of our lives.

Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels – 2 Octobe – Sermon on the Holy Guardian Angels by St Bernard

Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels – 2 October

Sermon on the Holy Guardian Angels

By St Bernard (1090-1153)
Doctor of the Churchguardian angels snip.JPG

“He hath given his angels charge over thee.”   O wonderful bounty and truly great love of charity!   Who?   For whom?   Wherefore?   What has He commanded?   Let us study closely, brethren and let us diligently commit to our memory, this great mandate.   Who is it that commands?  Whose angels are they?   Whose mandates do they fulfil?   Whose will do they obey?   In answer, “He hath given his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”   And they do not hesitate even to lift thee up in their hands.

So the Supreme Majesty has given charge to the angels.   Yes, He has given charge to His own angels.   Think of it!   To those sublime beings, who cling to Him so joyfully and intimately, to His very own He has given charge over you!   Who are you?   “What is man that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visit him?”   As if man were not rottenness and the son of man a worm!   Now why, do you think, he Has given them charge over thee? — To guard thee!Bernardo_Strozzi_-_The_Guardian_Angel_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

With what great reverence should you treat this word!   What devotion should you proffer it, what great confidence should you place in it.   Reverence because of their presence, devotion because of their benevolence, confidence because of their solicitude. Walk carefully, in all thy ways, as one with whom the angels are presen,t as He has given them charge.   In every lodging, at every corner, have reverence for thy Angel.   Do not dare to do in his presence what you would not dare to do if I were there.   Or do you doubt that he is present whom you do not behold?   What if you should hear him?   What if you should touch him?   What if you should scent him?   Remember that the presence of something is not proved only by the sight of things.guardian angels 2.jpg

In this, therefore, brethren, let us affectionately love His angels as one day our future coheirs, meanwhile, however, as counsellors and defenders appointed by the Father and placed over us.   Why should we fear under such guardians?   Those who keep us in all our ways, can neither be overcome, nor be deceived, much less deceive.   They are faithful, they are pruden, they are powerful, why do we tremble?   Let us only follow them, let us remain close to them and in the protection of the God of heaven, let us abide. As often, therefore, as a most serious temptation is perceived to weigh upon you and an excessive trial is threatening, call to your guard, your leader, your helper in your needs, in your tribulation, cry to him and say: “Lord, save us; we perish!”

This excerpt from a sermon by St Bernard of Clairvaux (Sermo 12 in psalmum Qui habitat, 3. 6-8: Opera omnia, Edit. Cisterc. 4 [1966], 458-462) is used in the Roman Office of Readings for the memorial of the Guardian Angels on 2 October.angelorum-guardian angel5a.jpg

Thought for the Day – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Thought for the Day – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers real and imagined.   Yet guardian angels are not only for children.   Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer and to present their souls to God at death.

The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it.   Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief:  “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

Devotion to the angels is, at base, an expression of faith in God’s enduring love and providential care extended to each person day in and day out.

The Catholic Church believes there is a link among believers, angels and the God who made us all:   “From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’   Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God” (CCC 336).

One Minute Reflection – 2 October – Today’s First Reading: Exodus 23:20–23 – Tuesday of the 26th Week in Ordinary Time, Year B and The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

“See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared.”…Exodus 23:20exodus-23-20

REFLECTION – “Be ever more convinced that your guardian angel is really present, that he is ever at your side. St Frances of Rome always saw him standing before her, his arms clasped at his breast, his eyes uplifted to Heaven but at the slightest failing, he would cover his face as if in shame and at times, turn his back to her.”… St John Bosco (1815-1888)be ever more convinced - st john bosco - 2 oct 2018

Our Morning Offering – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

My Oldest Friend
By Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

My oldest friend, mine from the hour
When first I drew my breath,
My faithful friend, that shall be mine,
Unfailing, till my death….

Mine when I stand before the Judge,
And mine, if spared to stay
Within the golden furnace, till
My sin is burn’d away.

And mine, O Brother of my soul,
When my release shall come,
Thy gentle arms shall lift me then,
Thy wings shall waft me home.my oldest friend - prayer to our guardian angel by bl john henry newman - 2 october 2018

Thought for the Day – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

The Father learned from his parents to have recourse to his Guardian Angel.   Then later on, as a seminarian, he read in a book by one of the Fathers of the Church that, in addition to a Guardian Angel, priests have a ministerial Archangel as well;  and so, from the day of his ordination to the priesthood, he turned to this Archangel with great simplicity and confidence.   In fact, he said he felt certain that even if the author he had read turned out to have been mistaken, our Lord would have given him a ministerial Archangel anyway, just because of the faith with which he always invoked him.

In any case, after the feast of the Guardian Angels in 1928, the founder of Opus Dei had a still more intense devotion to them.   He was always telling his children, “familiarity with, and devotion to, the holy Guardian Angels is at the heart of our work.   It is a concrete manifestation of the supernatural mission of Opus Dei.”

Convinced that God has placed an Angel beside each and every human being to help that person along the road of life, he had recourse to his own Guardian Angel for all his material and spiritual needs.   He would often say, quite frankly, “For years I’ve experienced the constant and immediate assistance of my Guardian Angel, even in the smallest material particulars.”   In the years between 1928 and 1940, his alarm-clock sometimes didn’t work and he didn’t have the money to repair it, so he turned in trust to his Guardian Angel and asked him to wake him up in the morning at the right time.   His Angel never once failed him.   And that’s why our Father affectionately called him “mi relojerico” [“my dear watchmaker”].

Whenever he greeted our Lord in the Tabernacle, he always thanked the Angels who were present there, for the unceasing adoration that they give to God.   On more than one occasion I heard him say, “When I go into one of our chapels, one that has a Tabernacle, I tell Jesus that I love him, and invoke the Blessed Trinity. Then I thank the Angels who guard the Tabernacle and adore Christ in the Eucharist.”7829cfbe41f6e53c5b6bb9dc0727f70a--angels-and-fairies-heavenly-angels

Through heroic and persevering correspondence with God’s grace, he acquired the habit of always greeting the Guardian Angels of the people he met.   One day in 1972 or 1973, the retired archbishop of Valencia, the Most Reverend Marcelino Olaechea, came to visit him, accompanied by his secretary.   They were very good friends, so that Father greeted him and then asked him playfully, “Marcelino, let’s see if you can guess – whom did I greet first?” The archbishop replied, “You greeted me first.” “No,” the Father said, “I greeted the VIP first.” Archbishop Olaechea, understandably perplexed, replied, “But of the two of us, my secretary and me, I am the ‘VIP’.” Then our founder explained, “No, the VIP is your Guardian Angel.”

During some days of rest that we spent in a rented house in a village in Lombardy, Italy – I can’t remember whether it was Caglio or Civenna – we would play bocce ball every so often, to get a little exercise.   Since we didn’t know the rules of the game too well, at times we would make up our own.   I remember that during one of these games, the Father threw the ball unusually well and made an exceptional score.   But he said immediately, “That doesn’t count – I was helped by my Guardian Angel. I won’t do that any more…” I tell this little story because I consider it indicative of the constant friendly rapport he had with his Guardian Angel and also of his humility; as he later told me directly, he was ashamed of having asked his Guardian Angel for help in such an unimportant matter.

Let us learn such devotion, love and friendship with our angels too.

Be attentive to him and obey him. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority is within him. If you obey him and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes.”…… Exodus 23:20-22exodus 23 20

Morning Hymn/Prayer from the Divine Office – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

They come, God’s messengers of love,
they come from realms of peace above,
from homes of never-fading light,
from blissful mansions ever bright.

They come to watch around us here,
to soothe our sorrow, calm our fear.
Ye heavenly guides, speed not away,
God willeth you with us to stay.

But chiefly at its journey’s end
“tis yours the spirit to befriends
and whisper to the willing heart,
“o Christian soul, in peace depart.”

To us the zeal of angels give,
with love to serve thee while we live.
To us an Angel-guard supply,
when on the bed of death we lie.
