Quote/s of the Day – 16 March – The Proof of our Love

Quote/s of the Day – 16 March – Wednesday of the Second week of Lent – Esther 13:8-11; 15-17, Matthew 20:17-28

“Are you able to drink the cup
that I am to drink?

Matthew 20:22

… Now is the time in this life of suffering,
when we journey apart from Him.
… So let us fast and pray now
because, we are in the days of childbirth!”

St Augustine (354-430)
Bishop of Hippo
Father and Doctor of Grace

Only let it be in the name of Jesus Christ,
that I may suffer together with Him!
I endure everything
because He Himself,
Who is perfect man, empowers me.”

St Ignatius of Antioch (c 35–107) Martyr

Embrace, then, Jesus Crucified,
raising to Him the eyes of your desire!
Consider His burning love for you,
which made Jesus pour out His Blood
from every part of His body!
Embrace Jesus crucified,
loving and beloved and in Him,
you will find true life because He is God made Man.
Let your heart and your soul burn
with the fire of love drawn from Jesus on the Cross!
… You will have no other desire than to follow Jesus!
Run, … do not stay asleep
because time flies and does not wait one moment!
Dwell in God’s sweet love!”

St Catherine of Sienna (1347-1380)
Doctor of the Church

“To labour and to suffer
for the One we love,
is the greatest proof of our love
.”

Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost, Beata Vergine delle Grazie / The Blessed Virgin of Grace, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy (1479) and Memorials of the Saints – 24 October

Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Saint Raphael the Archangel
The Feast day of Saint Raphael was included for the first time in the General Roman Calendar in 1921, for celebration on 24 October. With the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar, the Feast was transferred to September 29 for celebration together with Archangels Saints Michael and Gabriel.

Beata Vergine delle Grazie / The Blessed Virgin of Grace, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy (1479) – Fourth Sunday of October:

When Sir John Emo was serving as Venetian Ambassador to Constantinople, Sultan Mohammed II gave him a Byzantine-style icon of the Virgin nursing the Child.
In 1479, Sir Emo became Lieutenant of Udine, a City in northeast Italy then under the Republic of Venice, bringing the icon with him to the governor’s castle. Not long afterward, one of the palace cooks nearly lost a hand in the kitchen but it healed when touched to the image. News of the miracle inspired popular devotion, so Sir Emo decided to move the image to the Church of Sts. Gervais and Protasius, where it entered in procession on 8 September 1479. By 1495, the Church was too small for all the pilgrims and a new Sanctuary was begun, consecrated to Our Lady of Graces and run by the Servants of Mary. On 6 September 1870 the Church Crowned the icon; in 1922, it named the Shrine a Minor Basilica.

On the fourth Sunday of October, the City both fulfills and renews, a vow made during the plague of 1555. The Beata Vergine delle Grazie is also credited with saving the region from the plague of 1599, the cholera of 1836 and the bombardment of the war in1944.

St Anthony Mary Claret CMF (1807-1870) Known as “The Spiritual Father of Cuba.” In the first years, records show, that he Confirmed 100,000 people and performed 9,000 Sacramental Marriages.Archbishop of Cuba, one of the Fathers of the First Vatican Council,Confessor to the Queen of Spain, Missionary, Founder of the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians, Confessor, Mystic, Social Reformer, Spiritual Director, Writer, Publisher, Preacher, Apostle of Charity. He was declared venerable by Pope Leo XIII in 1899. He was Beatified in 1934 and in 1950, Canonised by Pope Pius XII. His heart is incorrupt.
The 1969 revision of the calendar moved St Anthony Feast to the day of his death, 24 October (from the 23rd) which had been the Feast of Saint Raphael the Archangel since 1921.

Quote/s of the Day – 14 October – Love

Quote/s of the Day – 14 October – “Month of the Holy Rosary” – Readings: Romans 3: 21-30; Psalms 130: 1b-6ab; Luke 11: 47-54

Whatever you do, do from the heart,
as for the Lord and not for others,
knowing that you will receive
from the Lord
the due payment of the inheritance;
be slaves of the Lord Christ.”

Colossians 3:23-24

Love[ing] one another
with the charity of Christ,
let the love you have in your hearts,
be shown outwardly in your deeds …

St Clare of Assisi (1194-1253)

“Love is watchful.
Sleeping, it does not slumber.
Wearied, it is not tired.
Pressed, it is not straitened.
Alarmed, it is not confused
but like a living flame,
a burning torch,
it forces its way upward
and passes unharmed
through every obstacle.”

“Nothing is sweeter than love,
nothing stronger or higher or wider;
nothing is more pleasant, nothing fuller
and nothing better in heaven or on earth,
for love is born of God
and cannot rest except in God,
Who is above all created things.”

Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471)

On the journey of this life to eternity,
let me carry You in my heart,
following Mary’s example,
who bore You in her arms,
during the flight to Egypt.

… It is Him you should love and no other.
Of Him you could and should say
“My Beloved is mine and I am his” (Sg 2:16);
my God has given Himself without reserve
and, without reserve, I give myself to Him;
He has chosen me as the object of His tenderness
and He, among thousands,
He, the radiant and ruddy one (Sg 5:10),
so loveable and so loving,
He is the chosen of my heart,
the only one I wish to love.

St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori (1696-1787)
Most Zealous Doctor

When the heart is pure and simple,
it cannot help loving
because it has discovered,
the source of love,
which is God.

St John Marie Baptiste Vianney (1786-1859)

I Want to Love You, My God
By St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

I want to love You, my God,
with all my heart,
with all my being,
with all my strength.
I consecrate to You,
my thoughts,
desires,
words
and actions,
whatever I have
and whatever I can be.
Let me use what I have
for Your greater honour
and glory,
according to Your will.
Amen

“Do not rejoice in the Cross only in times of peace,
preserve the same faith in times of persecution.
Do not be a friend to Jesus in times of peace alone,

when war breaks out, fight valiantly for your King.”

St Cyril of Jerusalem (315-387)
Father and Doctor of the Church

“Do not live any longer in yourself
but let Jesus Christ live in you in such a way
that the virtue of this Divine Saviour may be resplendent
in all your actions, in order that all may see in you

Quote/s of the Day – 19 January – ‘A Day Will Come …’

Quote/s of the Day – 19 January – the Memorial of St Wulfstan (c 1008–1095) Bishop of Worcester

This is true love of Christ and His Church.
O Lord, send us such men in our day, where have they gone!?
Today, those we have, are hiding behind closed doors and locking the Churches from the faithful, withholding the Sacraments or reporting souls for not complying with satanic rules. They are co-operating in evil schemes to subject all peoples to a totalitarian rule, turning the sheep of the Good Shepherd, into goats, who will be cast into the flames!

“Let the man truly possessed by the love of Christ
keep His commandments.
Who can express the binding power of divine love?
Who can find words for the splendour of its beauty?
Beyond all description are the heights to which it lifts us.
Love unites us to God;
it cancels innumerable sins,
has no limits to its endurance,
bears everything patiently.
Love is neither servile nor arrogant.
It does not provoke schisms or form cliques
but always acts, in harmony with others.
By it, all God’s chosen ones, have been sanctified;
without it, it is impossible to please Him.
Out of love, the Lord took us to Himself
because He loved us
and it was God’s will,
our Lord Jesus Christ gave His life’s blood for us—
He gave His body for our body,
His soul for our soul.”

St Clement I of Rome (c 35-99)
Martyr for Christ, Bishop of Rome, Apostolic Father

“We unfortunates,
are destroying the works of Saints,
in order to win praise for ourselves.
In that happy age, men were incapable
of building for display;
their way, was to sacrifice themselves to God,
under any sort of roof
and to encourage their subjects,
to follow their example.
But we strive to pile up stones
while neglecting souls.”

St Wulfstan (c 1008–1095)
Bishop of Worcester

“He who is not ANGRY
when there is just cause for anger is IMMORAL.
Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice.
And if you can live amid INJUSTICE WITHOUT ANGER,
you are IMMORAL, as well as, UNJUST.”

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Doctor Angelicus
Doctor Communis

“Better that only a few Catholics should be left,
staunch and sincere in their religion,
than that they should, remaining many,
desire as it were,
to be in collusion with the Church’s enemies
and in conformity
with the open foes of our faith.”

St Peter Canisius (1521-1397)
Doctor of the Church

“The declared enemies of God and His Church,
heretics and schismatics,
must be criticised as much as possible ….
It is a work of charity to shout:
‘Here is the wolf!’
when it enters the flock or anywhere else.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Doctor of Charity

“The sole reason why society is perishing
is because, it has refused to hear
the word of the Church,
which is the word of God.
All plans for salvation will be sterile,
if the great word of the Catholic Church,
is not restored
in all it’s fullness!”

“Woe to me if I do not preach
and warn [sinners],
for I would be held
responsible for their condemnation.”

St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

“A day will come when the civilised world
will deny its God,
when the Church will doubt
as Peter doubted.
She will be tempted to believe
that man has become God.
In our churches,
Christians will search in vain
for the red lamp where God awaits them.
Like Mary Magdalene,
weeping before the empty tomb,
they will ask,
‘Where have they taken Him?’

Venerable Pope Pius XII (1876-1958)

One Minute Reflection – 24 October – Cut it down, why should it use up the ground?- Luke 13:7

One Minute Reflection – 24 October – Saturday of the Twenty Ninth week in Ordinary Time, Readings: Ephesians 4:7-16Psalms 122:1-23-44-5Luke 13:1-9 and the Memorial of St Anthony Mary Claret CMF (1807-1870)

And he said to the vinedresser, “Lo, these three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down, why should it use up the ground? ” – Luke 13:7

REFLECTION – “The Lord also has something very fitting to say about a fruitless tree, “Look, it is now three years that I have been coming to it. Finding no fruit on it, I will cut it down, to stop it blocking up my field.” The gardener intercedes.

This tree is the human race. The Lord visited this tree in the time of the patriarchs, as if for the first year. He visited it in the time of the law and the prophets, as if for the second year. Here we are now, with the gospel the third year has dawned. Now it is as though it should have been cut down but the merciful one intercedes with the merciful one. He wanted to show how merciful he was and so he stood up to himself with a plea for mercy. “Let us leave it,” he says, “this year too. Let us dig a ditch around it.” Manure is a sign of humility. “Let us apply a load of manure, perhaps it may bear fruit.” Since it does bear fruit in one part and in another part does not bear fruit, it’s Lord will come and divide it. What does that mean, “divide it?” There are good people and bad people now in one company, as though constituting one body.” – St Augustine (354-430)Doctor of Grace – Sermon 254

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, help me to keep my death constantly before my eyes, for this is my final account. I pray You for a holy life that my death may be holy and that I may come to You and live for all eternity with You. May each moment of my life bear abundant fruit for love of You. When my hour is come, bid me come to You, Lord. Hear the prayers of your Saints, Anthony Mary Claret, who lived each moment of his life for the glory of Your Kingdom. We ask this through Christ, our Lord with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.

But you know it,

He comes with the truth of the real Protector;

“Go Forth, Set the World on Fire”

St Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556)

“A Son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
is a man on fire with love,
who spreads it’s flames wherever he goes.
He desires mightily and strives by all means possible,
to set the whole world on fire with God’s love.
Nothing daunts him,
he delights in privations,
welcomes work,
embraces sacrifices,
smiles at slander
and rejoices in suffering.
His only concern
is how he can best follow Jesus Christ
and imitate Him in working,
suffering and striving constantly
and single-mindedly,
for the greater glory of God
and the salvation of souls.”

It is certain, however, that of the two thieves
dying beside the Cross of our Redeemer, only one heard Him say:
“This day, you will be with me in Paradise!”
The other, remained obdurate in his sin.
It is the height of stupidity, to wait to be converted,
at the hour of death!”

Our Morning Offering – 16 February – The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Consecration to Our Lady of the Eucharist
After Holy Communion

Mary is called Our Lady of the Eucharist, because
without her, there would be no physical Body of Jesus
to be present in the Eucharist. (See John 6:51)

Prayer by the Claretian Fathers Teaching Ministry

Order founded by St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

Most kind Mother,
we consecrate to you our bodies,
which have just been
honoured and sanctified
by the presence of your Divine Son,
our souls which have
conversed with Him
and our hearts which have loved Him.
O dearest Mother,
may the words which we have spoken, be made
acceptable to Him. through your intercession.
Tell Him the things which we should have said
but were unable to express.
Love Him and beseech Him for us,
your poor children.
Receive and keep us in your heart.
Warn us, protect us
and guide us during this day,
that we may faithfully serve your Divine Son
and please him
in all our thoughts, desires and actions.

One Minute Reflection – 24 January – Friday of the Second week in Ordinary Time, Year A and the Memorial of St Francis De Sales OFM Cap (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church ” – Readings: 1 Samuel 24:2-20 (3-21), Psalm 57:2-4, 6, 11, Mark 3:13-19

He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him … Mark 3:14

REFLECTION – “Jesus calls those he wanted.    Jesus chooses.   They come to him.   He calls the Twelve to be with Him.   While they are with Him, listening to Him teach, witnessing the miracles He works, living with Him, the Twelve get to know Him, first hand.
They KNOW Jesus, not just about Jesus.
Jesus consecrates them as He takes them apart – forming them to carry on and continue His work.
Having consecrated them – he commissions them, as He sends them forth to preach the good news.
Jesus chooses.
Jesus consecrates.
Jesus commissions.
This explains the dynamics of genuine discipleship.
The disciple must learn TO BE WITH Jesus, before he attempts TO DO ANYTHING FOR Jesus.
We can be Apostles – only – if we have first been disciples WITH Him.” … Msgr Alex Rebello CMF (Diocese Wrexham, Wales) Claretian Priestmark 3 14 he appointed twelve - jesus chooses msgr rebello bible diary 24 jan 2020

Thought for the Day – 24 October – Save your soul – St Anthony Mary Claret

Thought for the Day – 24 October – The Memorial of St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

Jesus foretold that those who are truly His representatives would suffer the same persecution as He did.   Besides 14 attempts on his life, Anthony had to undergo such a barrage of the ugliest slander that the very name Claret became a byword for humiliation and misfortune.   The powers of evil do not easily give up their prey.   No-one needs to go looking for persecution.   All we need to do is be sure we suffer because of our genuine faith in Christ, not for our own whims and lack of prudence.   St Anthony pulled no punches but preached the Truth, fearless in the love of Christ and His Church, His Bride!

From the beginning Anthony wanted to be a priest.   His seminary life was exemplary and he was ordained on 13 June 1835.   He resolved never to waste a moment of time and during his 35 years as a priest he wrote 200 books and pamphlets and preached some 25,000 sermons.
On one trip, besides travelling, he preached 205 sermons in 48 days, 12 in one day.   To make sure his efforts might be recognised for what they were, he started off by reminding his hearers that the ordinary motives for labour are money, pleasure or honour.   But these were not his motives:

… not money, for I do not want a penny from anybody… Nor do I preach for pleasure, for what pleasure can I possibly take in spending myself all day, in being fatigued from early morning until late at night?…  I must be in the confessional most of the morning, the whole of the afternoon and in the evening, instead of resting, I have to preach.   This is not just for a day, but… for months and years…

Perhaps I labour for honour… no, not for honour either…   A preacher is exposed to many calumnies.   If praised by one, he is misunderstood by another, treated as the Jews treated Jesus, Who was calumniated by maligners of His person, of His words and works, before they finally seized, scourged and killed Him by a most painful and shameful means.   But like the apostle St Paul, I fear none of these things, since I value my soul more than my body.   At any cost, I must discharge the ministry I have received from God Our Lord, which is to preach the Gospel…   I have no worldly end in view but… that God may be known, loved and served by all the world… that sins and offences against Him may be hindered as much as possible…

Another thing that spurs me on, to preach ceaselessly, is the thought of the multitude of souls which fall in the depths of hell…   Who die in mortal sin, condemned forever and ever…   I see how many live habitually in mortal sin, so that never a day passes without increasing the number of their iniquities.   They commit sin as easily as they drink a glass of water, just for diversion, or for a laugh.   These unfortunate ones run to hell of their own accord, blind as bats…   If you were to see a blind man about to fall into a pit or over a precipice, would you not warn him?   Behold, I do the same and do it I must, for this is my duty…   You may tell me that sinners will insult me, that I should leave them alone…   Ah no, I can’t abandon them.   They are my dear brothers.   If you had a beloved brother who, sick and in the throes of delirium, were to insult you with all the angry words imaginable, would you abandon him?   I am certain you wouldn’t.   You would have even more compassion for him, do your utmost for his speedy recovery.   This is how I feel in regard to sin  ners. These poor souls are in a delirium and the more in need of our pity…

You may say the sinner doesn’t think of hell, nor even believe in it.   So much the worse for him.   Do you by chance think he will escape condemnation because of his unbelief? Truth is independent of belief…   I must warn sinners and make them see the precipice which leads to the unquenchable fires of hell, for they will surely go there if they do not amend their ways.   Woe to me if I do not preach and warn them, for I would be held responsible for their condemnation…   How often I pray, with St Catherine of Siena – ‘O my God, grant me a place by the gates of hell, that I may stop those who enter there saying:  Where are you going, unhappy one?   Back, go back!   Make a good confession.   Save your soul.   Don’t come here to be lost for all eternity!”

Further he boldly proclaimed – “The sole reason why society is perishing is because it has refused to hear the word of the Church, which is the word of life, the word of God.   All plans for salvation will be sterile if the great word of the Catholic Church is not restored in all its fullness.”

His own words, are the best description for St Anthony’s life:

“A Son of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a man on fire with love, who spreads its flames wherever he goes.   He desires mightily and strives by all means possible to set the whole world on fire with God’s love.   Nothing daunts him, he delights in privations, welcomes work, embraces sacrifices, smiles at slander and rejoices in suffering.   His only concern is how he can best follow Jesus Christ and imitate Him in working, suffering and striving constantly and single-mindedly, for the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls.”

“I came to cast fire upon the earth” …Luke 12:49

REFLECTION – “The fire that Jesus speaks of, is the fire of the Holy Spirit, the presence living and working in us from the day of our Baptism.   It — the fire — is a creative force that purifies and renews, that burns all human misery, all selfishness, all sin, which transforms us from within, regenerates us and makes us able to love.   If we open ourselves completely to the action of this fire, … He will give us the boldness and the fervour to proclaim, to everyone, Jesus and His consoling message of mercy and salvation, navigating on the open sea, without fear.” … Pope Francis – Angelus, 14 August 2016i came to cast fire upon earth luke 12 49 - the fire which jesus speaks of - pope francis - 24 oct 2019

PRAYER –
O Spirit of God, Spirit of love and of mercy,
Who pours into my heart the balm of trust,
Your grace confirms my soul in what is good,
Giving it an invincible strength – constancy!

O Spirit of God, Spirit of peace and of joy,
Who comforts my thirsting heart,
Pour into it the living spring of divine love
And make it dauntless in battle.

O Spirit of God, my soul’s most lovable guest,
I, for my part, desire to be faithful to You
In days of joy, as much as in days of suffering.
Spirit of God, I desire to live always in Your presence.

O Spirit of God who penetrates my being
And lets me know Your divine and Trinitarian life,
You initiate me to Your divine Being;
Thus united with You, I have eternal life. … St  Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938)o spirit of god spirit of love and of mercy st faustina 24 oct 2019

st anthony mary claret

Childhood:  St Anthony Mary Claret was born in Catalonia, the northeastern corner of Spain, in a town called Sallent on 23 December 1807.   He was the fifth son of Juan Claret and Josefa Clará’s eleven children.   His father owned a small textile factory but was not rich. Anthony grew up in a Christian environment and at a very early age had a strong sense of the eternal life that Christ wanted all men and women to enjoy.   He wanted to spare sinners eternal unhappiness and felt moved to work for their salvation.   When he was about eleven years old, a bishop visited his school and asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Without hesitation he responded: “A priest.”

Weaver:  As soon as Anthony was old enough, he began working as an apprentice weaver.   When he turned 17, his father sent him to Barcelona to study the latest techniques in textile manufacturing and to work in the large textile mills.   He did so well in the textile design school that he began receiving offers from large textile companies. Even though he had the talent to succeed, he turned down the offers and returned home after experiencing the emptiness of worldly achievements.

Vocation:  The words of the Gospel kept resounding in his heart: “what good is it for man to win the world if he loses his soul?”   He began to study Latin to prepare to enter the Seminary.   He wanted to be a Carthusian Monk.   His father was ready to accept the will of God but preferred to see him become a diocesan priest.   Anthony decided to enter the local diocesan seminary in the city of Vic.   He was 21 years old. After a year of studies, he decided to pursue his monastic vocation and left for a nearby monastery.   On the way there, he was caught in a big storm.   He realised that his health was not the best and withdrew from his decision to go to the monastery.

He was ordained a priest at 27 years of age and was assigned to his hometown parish. The town soon became too small for his missionary zeal and the political situation -hostile to the Church- limited his apostolic activity.   He decided to go to Rome to offer himself to serve in foreign missions.   Things did not work out as expected and he decided to join the Jesuits to pursue his missionary dream.   While in the Jesuit Novitiate, he developed a strange illness, which led his superiors to think that God might have other plans for him.   Once again, he had to return home to keep searching for God’s will in his life.

“Apostolic Missionary” in Catalonia and Canary Islands:  Back in a parish of Catalonia, Claret began preaching popular missions all over.   He traveled on foot, attracting large crowds with his sermons.   Some days he preached up to seven sermons in a day and spent 10 hours listening to confessions.   He dedicated to Mary all his apostolic efforts. He felt forged as an apostle and sent to preach by Mary.claret2-3

The secret of his missionary success was LOVE. In his words: “Love is the most necessary of all virtues.   Love in the person who preaches the word of God is like fire in a musket.   If a person were to throw a bullet with his hands, he would hardly make a dent in anything;  but if the person takes the same bullet and ignites some gunpowder behind it, it can kill.   It is much the same with the word of God.   If it is spoken by someone who is filled with the fire of charity- the fire of love of God and neighbour- it will work wonders.” (Autobiography #438-439).

His popularity spread- people sought him for spiritual and physical help.   By the end of 1842, the Pope gave him the title of “apostolic missionary.”   Aware of the power of the press, in 1847, he organised with other priests a Religious Press.   Claret began writing books and pamphlets, making the message of God accessible to all social groups.   The increasing political restlessness in Spain continued to endanger his life and curtail his apostolic activities.   So, he accepted an offer to preach in the Canary Islands, where he spent 14 months.   In spite of his great success there too, he decided to return to Spain to carry out one of his dreams: the organization of an order of missionaries to share in his work.

Founder and Archbishop of Cuba:  On July 16, 1849, he gathered a group of priests who shared his dream   This is the beginning of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, today also known as Claretian Fathers and Brothers.   Days later, he received a new assignment:  he was named Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba.   He was forced to leave the newly founded community to respond to the call of God in the New World. After two months of travel, he reached the Island of Cuba and began his episcopal ministry by dedicating it to Mary.   He visited the church where the image of Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba was venerated.   Soon he realized the urgent need for human and Christian formation, specially among the poor.  He called Antonia Paris to begin there the religious community they had agreed to found back in Spain.   He was concerned for all aspects of human development and applied his great creativity to improve the conditions of the people under his pastoral care.AA new foundation

Among his great initiatives were:  trade or vocational schools for disadvantaged children and credit unions for the use of the poor.   He wrote books about rural spirituality and agricultural methods, which he himself tested first.   He visited jails and hospitals, defended the oppressed and denounced racism.   The expected reaction came soon.   He began to experience persecution and finally when preaching in the city of Holguín, a man stabbed him on the cheek in an attempt to kill him.   For Claret this was a great cause of joy.  He writes in his Autobiography:  “I can´t describe the pleasure, delight, and joy I felt in my soul on realising that I had reached the long desired goal of shedding my blood for the love of Jesus and Mary and of sealing the truths of the gospel with the very blood of my veins.” (Aut. # 577).   During his 6 years in Cuba he visited the extensive Archdiocese three times…town by town.   In the first years, records show, he confirmed 100,000 people and performed 9,000 sacramental marriages.

Confessor to the Queen of Spain:  Claret was called back to Spain in 1857 to serve as confessor to the Queen of Spain, Isabella II.   He had a natural dislike for aristocratic life. He loved poverty and the simplest lifestyle.  He accepted in obedience but requested to be allowed to continue some missionary work.   Whenever he had to travel with the Queen, he used the opportunity to preach in different towns throughout Spain.   In a time where the Queens and Kings chose the bishops for vacant dioceses, Claret played an important role in the selection of holy and dedicated bishops for Spain and its colonies.
The eleven years he spent as confessor to the Queen of Spain were particularly painful, because the enemies of the Church directed toward him all kinds of slanders and personal ridicule.   In 1868 a new revolution dethroned the Queen and sent her with her family into exile.   Claret’s life was also in danger, so he accompanied her to France.   This gave him the opportunity to preach the Gospel in Paris.   He stayed with them for a while, then went to Rome where he was received by Pope Pius IX in a private audience.

First Vatican Council:  On December 8, 1869, seven hundred bishops from all over the world gathered in Rome for the First Vatican Council.   Claret was one of the Council Fathers.   His presence became noticeable when the subject of papal infallibility was discussed, which Claret defended vehemently.   This teaching became a dogma of faith for all Catholics at this Council.   The Italian revolution interrupted the process of the Council, which was never concluded.   Claret’s health deteriorated, so he returned to France accompanied by the Superior General of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, his congregation.

Last Days in Exile:  In France, Claret joined his missionaries who were also in exile. Soon he found out, that there was a warrant for his arrest.   He decided to go into hiding in a Cistercian Monastery in the French southern town of Fontfroide.   There he died on 24October 1870 at the age of 62.   As his last request, he dictated to his missionaries the words that are to appear on his tombstone: “I have loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore I die in exile.”   His zealous life and the wonders he wrought, both before and after his death, testified to his sanctity.   Information was sought in 1887 and he was declared venerable by Pope Leo XIII in 1899.   His relics were transferred to the mission house at Vic in 1897, at which time his heart was found incorrupt.   His grave is visited by many pilgrims.  Claret was beatified in 1934 and in 1950 canonised by Pope Pius XII.
