St Pope Hyginus (Died 142) Papal Ascension c 138. It is believed he was a Martyr for Christ and suffered during the persecution of Antoninus, although our ancient sources do not confirm this. Tradition holds that during his Papacy he determined the various prerogatives of the clergy and defined the grades of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Hyginus also instituted Godparents at Baptism to assist the baptised during their Christian life. In addition, he decreed, that all Churches be Consecrated.

Madonna della Vetrana / Our Lady of the Vetrana (Castellana Grotte, Bari, Puglia, Italy (1691) – 11 January:

In Castellana from time immemorial, there was a small Chapel dedicated to the Mother of God which contained a miraculous Fresco which was greatly revered ,after the Madonna had rid the region of the plague in the seventeenth century. Since then, the Shrine became a destination for faithful pilgrims reaping countless miracles, which the Virgin Mother obtained from her Divine Son.

In late 1690 the Church was almost ruined when a serious incident came to disturb the Castellana and the surrounding area. A serious disease spread, carrying death and mourning. Casimiro wrote in 1726. “This evil that made a great slaughter among the people, once attacked, all six children of Hadrian (Count of Conversano) and his wife Isabel Caracciolo. He who loved his wife and children, seeing this danger, resorted to the intercession of the Virgin … All his family was spared from evil. “
Two good priests’ recourse to the intercession of Saint Mary of the Vetrana and on 11 January 1691 one of them heard a voice that ordering the scourge to cease. “The Lady also expressed her desire to expand the Church.“
“So – continues Casimiro – “the Castellana people in recognition of the benefits received from the Virgin, immediately agreed to rebuild and expand the Church of St Maria della Vetrana.” The work lasted only a year and all the citizens of the Castellana took part.

Castellana, began to be known around the world after 23 January 1938, when Prof. Franco Anelli, a Caver, discovered a karst cave system. In 1959 because of this fascinating underground world, Castellana changed its name to ‘Castellana Grotte.‘

Our Lady of Bessiere and Memorials of the Saints – 11 January

Notre-Dame de Bessiere / Our Lady of Bessiere, Limousin, France – 11 January:

The region of Limousin is nestled near the heart of France, and the essentially rural area has suffered much from heresies such as that of the French Huguenots over the centuries. Devotion to Our Lady is always a sure remedy, so much so that one of her titles is Destroyer of Heresies.
Among the many miracles said to have taken place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Bessiere, in Limousin, France, is one told of a certain heretic who had derided the devotion paid to Our Lady. He would hide in the woods and waylay pilgrims on their way to the Shrine.
Fearing neither God nor his Holy Mother, he would block their way, mock them for undertaking such a journey, sneer at their Christian beliefs and taunt them with sarcastic reproaches and foul ridicule.
The unhappy man was soon to regret his folly. He was severely punished one day, as upon returning home, he saw his house go up in flames before his very eyes. Even with the assistance of his neighbours, all attempts to put out the flames were fruitless. In a matter of minutes his house was fully engulfed in flames.
As the fire was at its height, Our Lady appeared in the flames in all her majesty and was seen to frown upon the heretic. This vision was witnessed by all present, who immediately fell upon their knees, urging the heretic to do the same.
A broken man, frightened and frustrated, he prostrated himself, calling upon the Mother of God to be merciful to him.
His pleas were not in vain but it was not his house that she saved but his soul. In that moment he experienced a true and lasting conversion. He went onto live a very penitential life and died true believer.

Thought for the Day – 11 January – The Memorial of St Theodosius the Cenobiarch (423-529 died aged 106)

Today is the Memorial of St Theodosius the Cenobiarch who was a Monk, an Abbot and a Founder.   Roughly translated, cenobitical means “people who have a life in common,” and refers to the monks who joined Saint Theodosius’ community.   These monks, of many nationalities, devoted themselves to the Lord but did not remain in seclusion  . Rather, they socialised and interacted with the outside world, most particularly in the form of charitable and hospitable works, which was a new approach to monasticism at that time!

To his monastery were annexed three infirmaries: one for the sick, the gift of a pious lady in that neighbourhood;  the two others St Theodosius built himself, one for the aged and feeble, the other for such as had been punished with the loss of their senses, or by falling under the power of the devil.

All succours, spiritual and temporal, were afforded in these infirmaries, with admirable order, care, and affection.   He erected also several buildings for the reception of strangers, in which he exercised an unbounded hospitality, entertaining all that came, for whose use there were one day above a hundred tables served with provisions – these, when insufficient for the number of guests, were more than once miraculously multiplied by his prayers.

The monastery itself was like a city of saints in the midst of a desert and in it reigned regularity, silence, charity, and peace.   The monks passed a considerable part of the day and night at their devotions in the church and at the times not set apart for public prayer and necessary rest, everyone was obliged to apply himself to some trade or manual labour.

It has always been recognised that love of neighbour is part of the love of God and the great saints have lived this, helping the sick, the poor and the needy without expecting any return.   Monasteries were the first hospitals where the sick were cared for, free of charge and where the goodness of God was shown in countless ways.   St Theodosius the Cenobiarch was a leader in his time and in ours – we can do no less than he did!

One Minute Reflection – 11 January

If you lavish your food on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom shall become like midday; then the LORD will guide you always and satisfy your thirst in parched places, HE will give strength to your bones and you shall be like a watered garden, like a flowing spring whose waters never fail…….Isaiah 58:10-11

REFLECTION – “Love is the bond of life, the mother of the poor and the teacher of the rich.
It is the nurse of orphans, the attendant of the elderly, the treasure of the indigent and the common port of all the afflicted.”……..St Gregory of Nyssa.

PRAYER – O God, whose blessed Son became poor that we through His poverty might be rich, deliver us from an inordinate love of this world, that we, inspired, by the devotion of Your servant St Theodosius the Cenobiarch, may serve You with singleness of heart and attain to the riches of the age to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. St Theodosius the Cenobiarch. Pray for us! Amen

Saint of the Day – 11 January – St Theodosius the Cenobiarch (423-529)  died aged 106), Hermit/ AbboT/Founder of the Cenobitical Communities.   Roughly translated, cenobitical means “people who have a life in common,” and refers to the monks who joined Saint Theodosius’ community.   These monks, of many nationalities, devoted themselves to the Lord, but did not remain in seclusion.  Rather, they socialized and interacted with the outside world, which was a new approach to monasticism at that time!

Theodosius was born to pious parents in Mogarissos, Cappadocia (modern Turkey). Attracted to the academic life, he began his studies at an early age, impressing all with his intellect and mind and became a lector while still young.   Even as a child, he felt a desire to imitate Abraham by leaving his parents, friends, relatives and everything else for the love of God.   Acting upon his calling, Theodosius left home and set out for Jerusalem at the time of the Holy Fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon held in 451.    After visiting the holy places, he decided to lead a life of prayer. He asked the guidance of a holy man named Abbot Longinus.   Soon people realized how holy Theodosius himself was.   Many men asked to join him.   To escape the steady stream of pilgrims, Theodosius withdrew further into the wilderness, settling on a mountaintop, residing in a cave that tradition tells us is the same cave that the three Magi spent the night in following their paying homage to Jesus.

Theodosius built a large monastery at Cathismus, near Bethlehem.   Before long, it was filled with monks from Greece, Armenia, Arabia, Persia and the Slavic countries. Eventually, it grew into a “little city.”   One building was for sick people, one for the elderly and one for the poor and homeless.

Theodosius was always generous.   He fed an endless stream of poor people. Sometimes it seemed like there would not be enough food for the monks.   But Theodosius had great trust in God.   He never turned travelers away, even when food was scarce. The monastery was a very peaceful place.   The monks lived in silence and prayer.   It was going so well that the patriarch of Jerusalem appointed Theodosius head of all the monks in the east.

Theodosius died in 529 at the age of 106.   The patriarch of Jerusalem and many people attended his funeral.   Theodosius was buried where he had first lived as a monk.
