Quote/s of the Day – 12 June – Trinity Sunday

In all our undertakings –
when we enter a place or leave it,
before we dress,
before we bathe,
when we take our meals,
when we light the lamps in the evening,
before we retire at night,
when we sit down to read,
before each new task —
we trace the Sign of the Cross on our foreheads

Tertullian (c155- c240)
Father of the Church

In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
By St Hilary of Poitiers (315-368)

Father & Doctor of the Church

Father, keep us from vain strife of words.
Grant to us constant profession of the Truth!
Preserve us in a true and undefiled faith
so that we may hold fast to that
which we professed
when we were Baptised
in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
that we may have You for our Father,
that we may abide in Your Son
and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
Amen

Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

Holy God, we praise Thy Name.
Lord of all, we bow before Thee.
All on earth Thy sceptre claim;
all in heav’n above adore Thee.
Infinite Thy vast domain,
everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark, the loud celestial hymn,
angel choirs above are raising.
Cherubim and seraphim,
in unceasing chorus praising,
fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy Lord.

Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Ghost, three we name Thee
While in essence only One,
Undivided God, we claim Thee
and adoring, bend the knee,
while we own the Mystery.

Spare Thy people Lord, we pray,
By a thousand snares surrounded.
Keep us without sin today,
Never let us be confounded.
Lo, I put my trust in Thee,
Never Lord, abandon me.

Fr Ignaz Franz Poland (1719-1790) (Attri)
Archbishop of Schlawa, Germany, Hymnist, Musician
He also functioned as the Assessor for Theological Affairs at the Apostolic Vicariate. He wrote hymn lyrics and compiled religious music.

One Minute Reflection – 14 May – ‘ … The matrix and source of the faith …’

One Minute Reflection – 14 May – “Mary’s Month” – Feast of St Matthias Apostle, Readings: Acts 1:15-17, 20-26, Psalm 113:1-8, John 15:9-17

“…All that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you.” … John 15:15

REFLECTION – “Among His disciples Christ chose twelve chief ones whom He destined to be the teachers of the nations.   Accordingly, after one of these had been struck off, He commanded the eleven others, on His departure to the Father, to “go and teach all nations” who were to be “baptised into the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28,19).

So the Apostles – whom this designation indicates as ‘the sent’ – on the authority of a prophecy which occurs in a psalm of David, immediately chose Matthias by lot in place of Judas.   They obtained the promised power of the Holy Spirit for the gift of miracles and tongues and, after first bearing witness to faith in Jesus Christ, throughout Judaea and founding Churches there, they next went out into the world and preached the same teaching of faith to the nations. …

Now what it was they preached – in other words, what it was that Christ revealed to them – can properly be proved, in no other way, than by those very Churches that the Apostles founded in person, by directly declaring the Gospel to them, first by word of mouth and subsequently by their epistles.   If, then, these things are so, it is manifest, that all doctrine that agrees with the Apostolic Churches, which are the matrix and source of the faith, must be reckoned as true and as undoubtedly containing that, which those Churches received, from the Apostles, the Apostles from Christ and Christ from God.” … Tertullian, full name Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus (c 155- c 240) Father of the Church

PRAYER – Lord God, You chose St Matthias to complete the number of the twelve.   By his prayer, include us among Your chosen ones, since we rejoice to see that the lot marked out for us, is in Your Love.   May the Mother of Jesus, the Apostles and our Mother, ever intercede for us all.   Through Jesus the Christ, our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God now and forever, amen.

Love will tend upwards

for love proceeds from God

The Preaching of the Apostles

Tertullian (c 155- c 240)
Priest, Father and Ancient Christian Writer

An excerpt from his On the Prescription of Heretics

Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself declared what He was, what He had been, how He was carrying out His Father’s will, what obligations He demanded of men.    This He did during His earthly life, either publicly to the crowds, or privately to His disciples.  Twelve of these He picked out, to be His special companions, appointed to teach the nations.

One of them fell from His place.   The remaining eleven were commanded by Christ, as He was leaving the earth to return to the Father after His resurrection, to go and teach the nations and to baptise them into the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The apostles cast lots and added Matthias to their number, in place of Judas, as the twelfth apostle.   The authority for this action is to be found in a prophetic psalm of David.   After receiving the power of the Holy Spirit which had been promised to them, so that they could work miracles and proclaim the truth, they first bore witness to their faith in Jesus Christ and established churches throughout Judea.   They then went out into the whole world and proclaimed to the nations the same doctrinal faith.

They set up churches in every city.   Other churches received from them a living transplant of faith and the seed of doctrine and through this daily process of transplanting they became churches.   They therefore qualify as apostolic churches by being the offspring of churches that are apostolic.

Every family has to be traced back to its origins.   That is why we can say that all these great churches constitute that one original Church of the apostles, for it is from them that they all come.   They are all primitive, all apostolic, because they are all one.   They bear witness to this unity by the peace in which they all live, the brotherhood which is their name, the fellowship to which they are pledged.   The principle on which these associations are based is common tradition by which they share the same sacramental bond.

The only way in which we can prove what the apostles taught—that is to say, what Christ revealed to them — is through those same churches.   They were founded by the apostles themselves, who first preached to them by what is called the living voice and later by means of letters.

The Lord had said clearly in former times – I have many more things to tell you but you cannot endure them now.   But He went on to say – When the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you into the whole truth.   Thus Christ shows us that the apostles had full knowledge of the truth, for He had promised that they would receive the whole truth through the Spirit of truth.   His promise was certainly fulfilled, since the Acts of the Apostles prove, that the Holy Spirit came down on them.

Thought for the Day – 19 September – The Memorial of St Januarius – Martyr (Died c 304)

Many centuries ago, St Januarius died for the faith in the persecution of Diocletian and to this day God confirms the faith of his Church and works a continual miracle, through the blood which Januarius shed for Him.

Little did the heathen governor think that he was the instrument in God’s hand of ushering in the long succession of miracles which attest the faith of Januarius.

The relics of St Januarius rest in the cathedral of Naples and it is there that the liquefaction of his blood occurs.   The blood is congealed in two glass vials but when it is brought near the martyr’s head it melts and flows like the blood of a living man.

St Alphonsus Liguori wrote regarding Saint Januarius:

“The Neapolitans honour this saint as the principal patron of their city and nation and the Lord Himself has continued to honour him, by allowing many miracles to be wrought through his intercession, particularly when the frightful eruptions of Mount Vesuvius have threatened the city of Naples with utter destruction.   While the relics of St Januarius were being brought in procession towards this terrific volcano, the torrents of lava and liquid fire which it emitted have ceased, or turned their course from the city. But the most stupendous miracle and that which is greatly celebrated in the church, is the liquefying and boiling up of this blessed martyr’s blood whenever the vials are brought in sight of his head.   This miracle is renewed many times in the year, in presence of all who desire to witness it;  yet some heretics have endeavoured to throw a doubt upon its genuineness, by frivolous and incoherent explanations but no one can deny the effect to be miraculous, unless he be prepared to question the evidence of his senses.”

Tertullian said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”   Sometimes, that blood is bubbling.

(cf. Le lettere I, 15, 1-2)…………..St Jerome

PRAYER – Holy Father, send Your Divine Enlightener into the hearts of all Your faithful, filling us with the strength to fulfil our mission as the followers of the Chair of St Peter. And most of all, we pray Lord Holy God to inspire and light the way of our Holy Father, Francis. Sustain and guide him, keep him in health and strength, to lead Your people by the Light of the Way and the Truth. Holy Father, have mercy on us, Holy Spirit guide and lead us, Lord Jesus Christ be our intercessor and teacher, amen.
