13 May – Ascension Sunday, Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Help, Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Dedication of Saint Mary of the Martyrs and Memorials of the Saints

Ascension Sunday (2018)

Our Lady of Fatima 101st Anniversary of the First Apparition pray-for-us-mother-of-god - 14 may 2017

Our Lady of Help:   Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under this title began in Palermo, Sicily in the 14th century, and has since spread throughout the Augustinians.   It began when Father Nicola Bruno, who suffered from severe and long-term pains in his side, prayed to Our Lady for healing while meditating on a painting of Mary in which she used a stick or club to chase away the dragon and protect the infant Jesus;  the artist was making reference to passages in Genesis and Revelations that referred to the eternal enmity between The Woman and the serpent.   That night, Father Nicola received a vision of Mary and was healed.   The painting received the title “Our Lady of Help” and the devotion began.   Since 1804 the celebration has had its own liturgy.

Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament:   The title of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament was first given to Mary by St Peter Julian Eymard in May 1868, while speaking to his novices.   A few years later he described what her statue should look like: “The Blessed Virgin holds the Infant in her arms and He holds a chalice in one hand and a Host in the other.”   He exhorted them to invoke Mary: “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, pray for us who have recourse to thee!”our lady of the blessed sacrament - 13 may feast day

Dedication of Saint Mary of the Martyrs:   Commemorates and celebrates the dedication of Minor Basilica of Saint Mary of the Martyrs, formerly a temple of all the pagan Roman gods called the Pantheon, in Rome, Italy by Pope Boniface IV in 609.audio-guided-tour-of-the-pantheon-in-rome-basilica-of-st-mary-of-the-angels-and-the-martyrs-hSAzUyPKXzour lady of martyrs - pantheonour lady of martyrs - pantheon.2our lady of martyrs - pantheon.3

…he has looked on his servant in her lowliness…Luke 1:48

REFLECTIONMARY:  HE HAS LOOKED ON HIS SERVANT IN HER LOWLINESS :   “The mystery of Mary helps us to see that in order to approach God, we must become little. Christ said to his disciples:  ‘Believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.’   To become children, we must renounce our pride and self-sufficiency, recognising that we can do nothing by ourselves.   We must realise that we need grace and the help of God our Father to find our way and keep to it.” … St Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975) “To Jesus through Mary” Christ is Passing By, 143.

Marian Thought for the Day – 11 May – “Mary’s Month!” – Friday of the Sixth Week of Eastertide

Marian Thought for the Day – 11 May – “Mary’s Month!” – Friday of the Sixth Week of Eastertide

Mary is the “Regina Angelorum,” The Queen of Angels
Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

THIS great title may be fitly connected with the Maternity of Mary, that is, with the coming upon her of the Holy Ghost at Nazareth after the Angel Gabriel’s annunciation to her and with the consequent birth of our Lord at Bethlehem.   She, as the Mother of our Lord, comes nearer to Him than any angel;  nearer even than the Seraphim who surround Him and cry continually, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”

The two Archangels who have a special office in the Gospel are St Michael and St Gabriel—and they both of them are associated in the history of the Incarnation with Mary:  St Gabriel, when the Holy Ghost came down upon her and St Michael, when the Divine Child was born.

St. Gabriel hailed her as “Full of grace” and as “Blessed among women” and announced to her that the Holy Ghost would come down upon her and that she would bear a Son who would be the Son of the Highest.

Of St Michael’s ministry to her, on the birth of that Divine Son, we learn in the Apocalypse, written by the Apostle St John.   We know our Lord came to set up the Kingdom of Heaven among men and hardly was He born, when He was assaulted by the powers of the world, who wished to destroy Him.   Herod sought to take His life but he was defeated by St Joseph’s carrying His Mother and Him off into Egypt.   But St John in the Apocalypse tells us that Michael and his angels, were the real guardians of Mother and Child, then and on other occasions.

First, St John saw in vision “a great sign in heaven” (meaning by “heaven” the Church, or Kingdom of God), “a woman clothed with the sun and with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and when she was about to be delivered of her Child, there appeared “a great red dragon,” that is, the evil spirit, ready “to devour her son” when He should be born.   The Son was preserved by His own Divine power but next the evil spirit persecuted her;  St Michael, however and his angels, came to the rescue and prevailed against him.

“There was a great battle,” says the sacred writer; “Michael and his Angels fought with the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels and that great dragon was cast out, the old serpent, who is called the devil.”

Now, as then, the Blessed Mother of God has hosts of angels, who do her service and she is their Queen.

REFLECTION – “MARY:  WELCOMING THE MAGI: “‘Going into the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother.’   Our Lady is always near her Son.   The Magi are not received by a king on a high throne but by a child in the arms of His mother.   Let us ask the Mother of God, who is our mother, to prepare for us the way that leads to the fullness of love …. Loving mother of the Redeemer,
gate of heaven, star of the sea,
assist your people who have fallen,
yet strive to rise again.
To the wonderment of nature
you bore your Creator,
Yet remained a virgin after as before.
You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,
have pity on us poor sinners.

REFLECTION – MARY:  PRESENTING JESUS IN THE TEMPLE: “She teaches us to have charity.   Remember the scene of the presentation of Jesus in the temple.   An old man, Simeon, said to Mary, ‘Behold: This child is destined to bring about the fall of many and the rise of many in Israel and to be a sign, which people will refuse to acknowledge, so that the thoughts of many hearts shall be made manifest. As for your own soul, it shall have a sword pierce it.’   So great is Mary’s love for all mankind that she, too, fulfilled Christ’s words:  ‘Greater love has no man than this, that he should lay down his life for his friends.’ “… St Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975) – “Mother of God and Our Mother,” Friends of God, 287.

Our spirits rejoice in our Risen Saviour.
May your song be sung in our lives
At every moment of this day, so that God’s power,
Which can do far more than we can ask or imagine,
May continue to call life from death
and light from darkness,
Transforming our meager efforts
Into your Son’s victory over death.

Mary,
In the brilliant light of Easter,
Teach us, too, that nothing is impossible with God.

All our disappointments and shames,
All our failures and sinfulness
Are as nothing in this healing, life-giving light.
Accept, then, our all.
May God look upon it,

So that we might be gifted with that blessedness
Promised to all sons and daughters of the Resurrection.

Most Holy Virgin, I Choose You this Day
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of Charity

Most Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God,
I am unworthy to be your servant.
Yet moved by your motherly care for me
and longing to serve you,
I choose you this day to be my Queen,
my Advocate and my Mother.
I firmly resolve ever
to be devoted to you
and to do what I can
to encourage others
to be devoted to you.
My loving Mother,
through the Precious Blood
of your Son shed for me,
I beg you to receive me
as your servant forever.
Aid me in my actions
and beg for me the grace
never by thought, word, or deed
to be displeasing in your sight
and that of your most holy Son.
Remember me, dearest Mother,
and do not abandon me at the hour of death.

A Prayer of Praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary
By St Ephrem the Syrian (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Church

O pure and immaculate and likewise blessed Virgin,
who are the sinless Mother of your Son,
the mighty Lord of the universe,
you who are inviolate and altogether holy,
the hope of the hopeless and sinful,
we sing your praises.
We bless you, as full of every grace,
you who did bear the God-Man,
we all bow low before you,
we invoke you and implore your aid.
Rescue us, O holy and inviolate Virgin,
from every necessity that presses upon us
and from all the temptations of the devil.
Be our intercessor and advocate
at the hour of death and judgement,
deliver us from the fire that is not extinguished
and from the outer darkness.
Make us worthy of the glory of your Son,
O dearest and most clement Virgin Mother.
You indeed are our only hope,
most sure and sacred in God’s sight,
to whom be honour and glory,
majesty and dominion,
forever and ever, world without end.

Keep constantly before my mind
the same thoughts,
the same desires,
that my heart may be filled with zeal
for the interests of the Sacred Heart
of your Divine Son.
Instill in me a love of all that is noble,
that I may no longer be easily turned to selfishness.
Help me, dearest Mother,
to acquire the virtues that God wants of me,
to forget myself always,
to work solely for Him,
without fear of sacrifice.
I shall always rely on your help
to be what Jesus wants me to be.
I am His; I am yours, my good Mother!
Give me each day your holy and maternal blessing
until my last evening on earth,
when your Immaculate Heart
will present me to the heart of Jesus in heaven,
there to love and bless you
and your divine Son for all eternity.

One Minute Marian Reflection – 2 May “Mary’s Month!” – Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter

And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”…Luke 1:29hail full of grace, the Lord is with you - luke 1 29

REFLECTION“MARY:  THE MOST PERFECT CREATURE:  “She who is full of grace, the object of God’s pleasure, exalted above all the angels and the saints, lived an ordinary life.   Mary is as much a creature as we are, with a heart like ours, made for joy and mirth as well as suffering and tears.   Before Gabriel communicates to her God’s plan, our Lady does not know that she has been chosen from all eternity to be the mother of the Messiah.   She sees herself as a lowly creature.  That is why she can acknowledge, with full humility, that ‘he who is mighty has done great things for her.”
Let us offer to our Mother today:
Many glances of affection and many words of love,
when we see her image or picture in our home, in the church, or anywhere.”…… St Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975) – “Cause of our Joy” – Christ is Passing By 172mary is as much a creature - st josemaria - 2 may 2018

PRAYER – Let us praise God the Father, who chose Mary as the Mother of His Son and wanted all generations to hail her, O full of grace!   With all confidence we pray, may our Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin intercede for us today and every day of our lives.   We make our prayer through her son, our divine Saviour, Jesus Christ, in unity with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever, amen.holy mary mothr of god pray for us

Prayer to Mary,
Mother of Grace
By St Athanasius (297-373) Father and Doctor of the Church

It is becoming for you, O Mary,
to be mindful of us,
as you stand near Him
who bestowed upon you all graces,
for you are the Mother of God and our Queen.
Come to our aid for the sake of the King,
the Lord God and Master,
who was born of you.
For this reason,
you are called “full of grace.”
Be mindful of us,
most holy Virgin and bestow on us gifts
from the riches of your graces,
O Virgin full of grace.

One Minute Reflection – 1 May – Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Eastertide, the Memorial of St Joseph the Worker and the 1st day of the Month of Mary

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David and the virgin’s name was Mary...Luke 1:26-27in the sixth month the angel Gabriel - luke 1 26-27 - 1 may 2018

REFLECTION – “MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD:  “When the Blessed Virgin said yes, freely, to the plans revealed to her by the Creator, the divine Word assumed a human nature — a rational soul and a body – which was formed in the most pure womb of Mary. The divine nature and the human were united in a single Person:  Jesus Christ, true God and, thenceforth, true man;  the only begotten and eternal son of the Father and from that moment on, as man, the true son of Mary.   This is why our Lady is the mother of the Incarnate Word, of the second person of the Blessed Trinity, who has united our human nature to Himself for ever, without any confusion of the two natures.   The greatest praise we can give to the Blessed Virgin is to address her loudly and clearly by the name that expresses her very highest dignity: ‘Mother of God’.
Let us offer to our Mother today:
Brief but frequent prayers of love, such as – “Mother of God, your petitions are most powerful.”St Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975) – “Mother of God and Our Mother,” – Friends of God 274when the blessed virgin said yes, freely, - st josemaria - 1 may 2018

PRAYER – Almighty God and Father, Your ways are not our ways, teach us to willingly agree to them, for You know which way we should go.   Help us to say “yes” always to Your plan and to render ourselves as a sacrament of Your divine love to all we meet.   Fill us with the grace to be your tools to bring glory to Your kingdom.   Our Father, who art in heaven, may Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.   Mary Mother of God, pray for us!   Through our Our Lord Jesus Christ with You, in the union of the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.holy mary-mother of god - pray-for-us.- 1 may 2017 and 2018

An Act of Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary
By St John Berchmans S.J. (1599-1621)

Holy Mary, Mother of God and Virgin,
I choose you this day for my queen,
patron and advocate
and firmly resolve and purpose,
never to abandon you,
never to say or do anything,
against you,
nor to permit that aught be done by others,
to dishonour you.
Receive me, then, I beg you,
as your perpetual servant,
assist me in all my actions
and do not abandon me
at the hour of my death.

Totus Tuus Ego Sum
I am All Yours
By St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673-1716)

My powerful Queen,
you are all mine through your mercy,
and I am all yours.
Take away from me all that may displease God
and cultivate in me all that is pleasing to Him.
May the light of your faith
dispel the darkness of my mind,
your deep humility
take the place of my pride,
your continual sight of God
fill my memory with His presence.
May the first of the love of your heart
inflame the lukewarmness of my own heart.
May your virtues take the place of my sins.
May your merits be my enrichment
and make up for all
that is wanting in me before God.
My beloved Mother,
grant that I may have
no other spirit but your spirit,
to know Jesus Christ and His Divine will
and to praise and glorify the Lord,
that I may love God
with burning love like yours.
Amen.totus tuus ego sum - i am all yours - prayer by st louis de montfort - 28 april 2018 - his memorial

O Most Blessed and Sweet Virgin Mary
By St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) Doctor of the Church

0 most blessed and sweet Virgin Mary,
Mother of God, filled with all tenderness,
Daughter of the most high King,
Lady of the Angels,
Mother of all the faithful,
On this day and all the days of my life,
I entrust to your merciful heart,
my body and my soul,
all my acts, thoughts, choices,
desires, words, deeds,
my entire life and death,
So that, with your assistance,
all may be ordered to the good
according to the will of your beloved Son,

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Before Holy Mass

O most blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of tenderness and mercy,
I, a miserable and unworthy sinner,
fly to you with all the affection of my heart
and I beseech your motherly love,
that, as you stood by your most dear Son,
while he hung on the Cross,
so, in your kindness,
you may be pleased to stand by me, a poor sinner,
and all Priests who today are offering the Sacrifice
here and throughout the entire holy Church,
so that with your gracious help
we may offer a worthy and acceptable oblation
in the sight of the most high and undivided Trinity.
Amen.

22 February 2018 Thursday of the First Week of Lent and the Feast of the Chair of St Peter

22 February 2018 Thursday of the First Week of Lent and the Feast of the Chair of St Peter

1 Peter 5:1-4, Psalms 23, Matthew 16:13-19

1 Peter 5:1-3 –  “So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ as well as a partaker in the glory that is to be revealed.   Tend the flock of God that is your charge, not by constraint but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly, not as domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock.”

Matthew 16:14-19 –  He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”   And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona!  For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my Father, who is in heaven.   And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the powers of hell shall not prevail against it.   I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven.”lent - thursday of the first week - 22 feb 2018

Organisations develop and thrive under enlightened leadership and through the hard work of dedicated members. The Church is not different. She has rendered amazing service to human society, starting with just twelve members, because at every period of history, she has had committed and perceptive leaders to guide her, always, under the main leader, God, the Holy Spirit.

Today, Peter asks his fellow Church-workers, to fulfil their duty with joy, not out of compulsion or for any material advantage.   He himself was entrusted with the mission of guiding and caring for the destinies of the early Christian community, in spite of his limitations.   One of his great distinctions was that he was the first to confess, before his brethren, that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God, this is the source and ground of the whole operation.   Many others had seen in Jesus a gifted prophet.   But God reveals His Son to those whom He chooses.

Those who are open to God’s ways, not only recognise Him for what He really is but become eager to take His message to the ends of the earth.   They listen for His voice! And this is the end result of our Lenten penances, to become those lights in our world, to become those Catholics who truly resemble their Founder, those Catholics who pray, who love, who live charity and thus, by their lives, they preach the Good News to all who meet them!   ArchBishop Thomas Menamparampil SCB

Hearing the Voice of God:  A man practised in woodcraft, out of a babel of sounds in a tropical forest, will recognise any one.   He may hear the calls of a hundred, a thousand, different species of birds, squawking, hooting, whistling, singing but he says, “There! Listen to the note of such and such a bird.”   The novice strains his ears but cannot catch the particular sound.   “I listen,” says he, “but I cannot recognise it.   How can you know it?”   And the master says, “I could tell that note if every leaf on every tree had a different voice and all were speaking.   I could tell that note in the midst of any tumult.”

So, the man who knows the voice of God, hears it anywhere – in the midst of crowded streets, at an entertainment, on a battle field, in his soul, even when temptation is making pandemonium within.   He can recognise the voice of God anywhere…– Father James M Gillis – A Thought a Day for Lent, by Father James M Gillis, C.S.P

O Jesus, living in Mary
By Fr Jean-Jacques Olier, S.S. (1608-1657)

O Jesus, living in Mary,
Come and live in Your servants,
In the spirit of Your sanctity,
In the fullness of Your strength.
In the reality of Your virtues.
In the perfection of Your ways.
In the communion of Your mysteries.
Be lord over every opposing power.
In Your own Spirit, to the glory of the Father.
Amen

REFLECTION – “In Lucia’s account, the three chosen children found themselves surrounded by God’s light as it radiated from Our Lady.   She enveloped them in the mantle of Light that God had given her.   According to the belief and experience of many pilgrims, if not of all, Fatima is more than anything this mantle of Light that protects us, here, as in almost no other place on earth.   We need but take refuge under the protection of the Virgin Mary and to ask her, as the Salve Regina teaches: “show unto us… Jesus”.the three chosen children - pope francis canonisation homily - 20 feb 2018
“The Lord, who always goes before us, said this and did this (Jn 12:24).   Whenever we experience the cross, He has already experienced it before us.   We do not mount the cross to find Jesus.   Instead it was He who, in His self-abasement, descended even to the cross, in order to find us, to dispel the darkness of evil within us and to bring us back to the light.”…Pope Francis at the Canonisation of Saints Francisco and Jacinta on 14 May 2017

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, just as the little children, Francisco and Jacinta, were chosen to be bearers of Your message, grant we pray, that by their prayers on our behalf, we too may Your bearers of light.   Be with us, holy Mother, during our Lenten journey to the Resurrection of your Son, help us to become like little children and in that new purity, shine with His Light.   Through Jesus our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.sts francisco & jacinta - 20 feb 2018

Saints of the Day – 20 February – Saints Francisco (1908-1919) and Jacinta Marta (1910-1920)

Saints of the Day – 20 February 2018 – Today, is the First Memorial of Saints Francisco (1908-1919) and Jacinta Marta (1910-1920) who were Canonised last year, 13 May 2017 – “The Shepherds of Fatima”

Between 13 May and 13 October 1917, three Portuguese shepherd children from Aljustrel, received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fátima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon.   At that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was in political turmoil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910;  the government disbanded religious organisations soon after.STS FRANCISCO AND JACINTA-HEADER

At the first appearance, Mary asked the children to return to that spot on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months.   She also asked them to learn to read and write and to pray the rosary “to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.”   They were to pray for sinners and for the conversion of Russia, which had recently overthrown Czar Nicholas II and was soon to fall under communism.   Up to 90,000 people gathered for Mary’s final apparition on 13 October 1917, when Our Lady of the Rosary asked them to build a chapel on the rocky hillside.   This apparition is now known as the Miracle of the Sun.   The entire crowd saw a remarkable sight.   The sun seemed to dance in the sky.   It was spinning like a top and shooting off brilliant colours of the rainbow. Suddenly the sun dropped treacherously close to earth.   People dropped to their knees and the sun just as quickly returned to its play in the sky.

Less than two years later, Francisco died of influenza in his family home.   He was buried in the parish cemetery and then re-buried in the Fátima basilica in 1952.   Jacinta died of influenza in Lisbon in 1920, offering her suffering for the conversion of sinners, peace in the world and the Holy Father.   She was re-buried in the Fátima basilica in 1951, when it was discovered that her body is incorrupt.   Their cousin Lúcia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and was still living when Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000;   she died five years later.

Pope Francis canonised the younger children on his visit to Fátima to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first apparition, last year, 13 May 2017. fatima canonisation.3fatima canonisation.2fatima canonisationCANONISATION MASS

we turn to you and pray:
support our prayers
for ourselves,
for all your Servants,
for our friends and families,
for those who share the Christian faith
and for every person on earth
that all may know peace and salvation.
