Your Sacred Table
A Prayer Before Holy Communion
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church

Divine Saviour,
we come to Your sacred table
to nourish ourselves,
not with bread but with Yourself,
true Bread of eternal life.
Help us daily to make a good
and perfect meal
of this divine food.
Let us be continually refreshed
by the perfume of Your kindness and goodness.
May the Holy Spirit fill us with His Love.
Meanwhile, let us prepare a place
for this holy food by emptying our hearts.

One Minute Reflection – 6 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 10:17–24 – Saturday of the Twenty-sixth week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of St Bruno O.Cart. (c 1030-1101)

“Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you but rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”
At that very moment he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the babes…” Luke 10:20-21I give you praise Father - luke 10 21 - 6 oct 2018

REFLECTION – “We were chosen out of love and this is our identity.
I have chosen this religion, I have chosen?… NO, you have not chosen.
He is the one who chose you, called you and bound Himself to you.
And this is our faith.   If we do not believe this, we do not understand what the message of Christ is and then we do not understand the Gospel.
He fell in love with our smallness and for this reason He chose us.   And He chooses the little ones – not the great, the little ones.   If you want to understand something of the mystery of Jesus, lower yourself, make yourself small.   Recognise that you are nothing. And not only does He choose and reveal Himself to the little ones but He calls the little ones:  ‘Come to me, all you who are tired and oppressed, I will give you rest’.   But does He not call the gre  at? His heart is open but the great cannot hear His voice because they are full of themselves.   To listen to the voice of the Lord, one must become small.”….Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 23 June 2017we were chosen out of love - pope francis - 6 october 2018

PRAYER – Lord God, You called St Bruno to serve You in a life of solitude. Amidst this world’s changes, help us, by his prayers, to set out hearts always on You.   Heavenly Father, let me realise that You guide our lives through Your Providence, Your Word and Sacraments.   Help me to be obedient to the rules for my state in life and so be obedient to Your will for me.   Grant that the prayers of St Bruno may assist us as we strive to grow in humility.   Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son in union with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever, amen.st bruno - pray for us - 6 oct 2018

One Minute Reflection – 5 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 10:13–16 – Friday of the Twenty-sixth week in Ordinary Time, Year B and the Memorial of Blesseds Francis Xavier Seelos  (1819-1867) and Bartholomew Longo  (1841-1926)

“He who hears you, hears me and he who rejects you,
rejects me and he who rejects me, rejects him who sent me.”...Luke 10:16

REFLECTION – “Someone, having listened to the verse:  “Offer to God a sacrifice of praise” (Ps 50[49].14), said to himself:  “I will go to church every day when I get up and sing a morning hymn;  then an evening hymn at the end of the day and then, in my own home, a third and fourth hymn.   This is how I will make a sacrifice of praise every day and offer it to my God.”   It is good to do this if you do it in truth but beware of placing your confidence in what you do and fear lest, while your tongue is speaking eloquently before God, your life may be speaking badly…
Take care you don’t live evilly, while speaking well.”…St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctor of the Church

PRAYER – And we exult you, O Mary Assumed into Heaven, as we contemplate you who have been glorified and, in the risen Christ, have become the co-worker of the Holy Spirit in communicating divine life to mankind.   In you we see the goal of holiness to which God calls all the Church’s members.   In your life we recognise the clear sign of the path to spiritual maturity and Christian holiness. With you, with Blesseds Francis Xavier Seelos,  Bartholomew Longo and with all the saints, we glorify God the Trinity, who sustains our earthly pilgrimage and lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen (by St Pope John Paul Nov 2000)

Thought for the Day – 4 October – The Memorial of St Francis of Assisi OFM (1181/2–1226)

Dear friends, Francis was a great Saint and a joyful man.   His simplicity, his humility, his faith, his love for Christ, his goodness towards every man and every woman, brought him gladness in every circumstance.   Indeed, there subsists an intimate and indissoluble relationship between holiness and joy.   A French writer once wrote that there is only one sorrow in the world – not to be saints, that is, not to be near to God.   Looking at the testimony of St Francis, we understand that this is the secret of true happiness: -to become saints, close to God!

May the Virgin, so tenderly loved by Francis, obtain this gift for us.   Let us entrust ourselves to her with the words of the Poverello of Assisi himself:

“Blessed Virgin Mary, no one like you among women has ever been born in the world, daughter and handmaid of the Most High King and heavenly Father, Mother of our Most Blessed Lord Jesus Christ, spouse of the Holy Spirit.

Pray for us… to your most blessed and beloved Son, Lord and Master”

“Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals and salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’”...Luke 10:4-5

REFLECTION – “Three times Christ on the Cross came to life and told him:  “Go, Francis, and repair my Church in ruins”.   This simple occurrence of the word of God heard in the Church of St Damian, contains a profound symbolism.   At that moment, St Francis was called to repair the small church but the ruinous state of the building, was a symbol of the dramatic and disquieting situation of the Church herself…. it is important to note that St Francis does not renew the Church without, or in opposition, to the Pope but only in communion with him.   Authentic renewal grew from these together….
Francis, standing before the Bishop of Assisi, in a symbolic gesture, stripped off his clothes, thus showing he renounced his paternal inheritance.   Just as at the moment of creation, Francis had nothing, only the life that God gave him, into whose hands he delivered himself….
The truth is that St Francis really did have an extremely intimate relationship with Jesus and with the word of God, that he wanted to pursue sine glossa just as it is, in all its radicality and truth.   It is also true, that initially he did not intend to create an Order with the necessary canonical forms.   Rather he simply wanted, through the word of God and the presence of the Lord, to renew the People of God, to call them back to listening to the word and to literal obedience to Christ.”…Pope Benedict XVI – Catechesis on St Francis – General Audience, 27 January 2010luke 10 4-5 - st francis really did have - pope benedict - 4 oct 2018

PRAYER – Lord God, You made St Francis of Assisi, Christ-like in his poverty and humility, his gentleness and charity, his love and courage.   Help us to walk in his ways that, with joy and love, we may follow Christ Your Son and be united with You.   May the intercession of St Francis, be an assistance on our journey.   Through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.st-francis-pray for us - 4-oct-2018

Thought for the Day – 3 October – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:57–62

To another he said, “Follow me.”   But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”...Luke 9:59-60

Following and accompanying Christ, staying with Him, demands “coming out of ourselves”, requires us to be outgoing – to come out of ourselves, out of a dreary way of living faith that has become a habit, out of the temptation to withdraw into our own plans which end by shutting out God’s creative action.

God came out of Himself to come among us, He pitched his tent among us to bring to us His mercy that saves and gives hope.
If we want to follow Him and to remain with Him, we too must “go out” with Him to seek the lost sheep, the one that has strayed the furthest.

To come out always!   And to do so with God’s love and tenderness, with respect and with patience, knowing that God takes our hands, our feet, our heart and guides them and makes all our actions fruitful...

REFLECTION –
“Remember the Father’s glory,
Remember the divine splendour
You left in exiling Yourself on earth
To redeem all the poor sinners.
O Jesus! Humbling Yourself to the Virgin Mary,
You veiled Your infinite greatness and glory.
Ah! Your mother’s breast
Was Your second heaven,
Remember…

Remember that on other shores
The golden stars and silver moon
On which I gaze in the cloudless sky
Delighted and charmed Your Infant eyes.
With Your little hand that caressed Mary
You upheld the world and gave it life,
And You thought of me,
Jesus, my little King,
Remember.

Remember that You worked in solitude
With Your divine hands.
To live forgotten was Your sweetest task.
You rejected human learning.
O You who with just one word could charm the world,
You took delight in hiding Your profound wisdom.
You seemed unlearned,
O All-powerful Lord!
Remember.

Remember that You wandered as a Stranger on earth.
You, the Eternal Word,
You had nothing, no, not even a stone,
Not a shelter, like the birds of heaven.
O Jesus! come within me, come rest Your Head,
Come, my soul is truly ready to receive You.
My Beloved Saviour,
Rest in my heart.
It is Yours.”…St Thérèse of the Child Jesus OCD (1873-1897) Doctor of the Churchremember that you wandered as a stranger on earth - st t of l - 3 oct 2018

Thought for the Day – 2 October – The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers real and imagined.   Yet guardian angels are not only for children.   Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer and to present their souls to God at death.

The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it.   Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief:  “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

Devotion to the angels is, at base, an expression of faith in God’s enduring love and providential care extended to each person day in and day out.

The Catholic Church believes there is a link among believers, angels and the God who made us all:   “From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’   Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God” (CCC 336).

Thought for the Day – 1 October – The Memorial of St Thérèse of Lisieux O.C.D. (1873 – 1897) Doctor of the Church

Excerpt from Pope Benedict’s Catechesis on St Thérèse – 6 April 2011

“Today I would like to talk to you about St Thérèse of Lisieux, Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face, who lived in this world for only 24 years, at the end of the 19th century, leading a very simple and hidden life but who, after her death and the publication of her writings, became one of the best-known and best-loved saints. “Little Thérèse” has never stopped helping the simplest souls, the little, the poor and the suffering who pray to her.

I would like to invite you to rediscover this small-great treasure, this luminous comment on the Gospel lived to the full!   The Story of a Soul, in fact, is a marvellous story of Love, told with such authenticity, simplicity and freshness that the reader cannot but be fascinated by it!   But what was this Love that filled Thérèse’s whole life, from childhood to death?   Dear friends, this Love has a Face, it has a Name, it is Jesus!   The Saint speaks continuously of Jesus.

Dear friends, we too, with St Thérèse of the Child Jesus must be able to repeat to the Lord every day that we want to live of love for Him and for others, to learn at the school of the saints to love authentically and totally.  Thérèse is one of the “little” ones of the Gospel who let themselves be led by God to the depths of his Mystery.   A guide for all, especially those who, in the People of God, carry out their ministry as theologians.   With humility and charity, faith and hope, Thérèse continually entered the heart of Sacred Scripture which contains the Mystery of Christ.   And this interpretation of the Bible, nourished by the science of love, is not in opposition to academic knowledge.   The science of the saints, in fact, of which she herself speaks on the last page of her The Story of a Soul, is the loftiest science.

In the Gospel Thérèse discovered above all the Mercy of Jesus, to the point that she said: “To me, He has given His Infinite Mercy and it is in this ineffable mirror, that I contemplate His other divine attributes.   Therein all appear to me radiant with Love.   His Justice, even more perhaps than the rest, seems to me to be clothed with Love” (Ms A, 84r).

In these words she expresses herself in the last lines of The Story of a Soul:   “I have only to open the Holy Gospels and at once I breathe the perfume of Jesus’ life and then I know which way to run;  and it is not to the first place but to the last, that I hasten…. I feel that even had I on my conscience every crime one could commit… my heart broken with sorrow, I would throw myself into the arms of my Saviour Jesus, because I know that He loves the Prodigal Son” who returns to Him. (Ms C, 36v-37r).

“Trust and Love” are therefore the final point of the account of her life, two words, like beacons, that illumined the whole of her journey to holiness, to be able to guide others on the same “little way of trust and love”, of spiritual childhood (cf. Ms C, 2v-3r; LT 226).

Trust, like that of the child who abandons himself in God’s hands, inseparable from the strong, radical commitment of true love, which is the total gift of self for ever, as the Saint says, contemplating Mary:   “Loving is giving all, and giving oneself” (Why I love thee, Mary, P 54/22).

Thus Thérèse points out to us all that Christian life consists in living to the full the grace of Baptism in the total gift of self to the Love of the Father, in order to live like Christ, in the fire of the Holy Spirit, His same love for all the others.”…Pope Benedict XVI

Thought for the Day – 30 September – The Memorial of St Jerome (347-419) Father and Doctor

Pope Benedict XVI – 7 November 2007 –

Catechesis on St Jerome (1)

What can we learn from St Jerome?   It seems to me, this above all – to love the Word of God in Sacred Scripture.

St Jerome said:  “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ”.   It is therefore important that every Christian live in contact and in personal dialogue with the Word of God given to us in Sacred Scripture.   This dialogue with Scripture must always have two dimensions:  on the one hand, it must be a truly personal dialogue because God speaks with each one of us through Sacred Scripture and it has a message for each one.   We must not read Sacred Scripture as a word of the past but as the Word of God that is also addressed to us and we must try to understand what it is that the Lord wants to tell us. However, to avoid falling into individualism, we must bear in mind that the Word of God has been given to us precisely in order to build communion and to join forces in the truth on our journey towards God.   Thus, although it is always a personal Word, it is also a Word that builds community, that builds the Church.   We must, therefore, read it in communion with the living Church.   The privileged place for reading and listening to the Word of God is the liturgy, in which, celebrating the Word and making Christ’s Body present in the Sacrament, we actualise the Word in our lives and make it present among us.   We must never forget that the Word of God transcends time  . Human opinions come and go.   What is very modern today will be very antiquated tomorrow.   On the other hand, the Word of God is the Word of eternal life, it bears within it eternity and is valid for ever.   By carrying the Word of God within us, we therefore carry within us eternity, eternal life.ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of christ - st jerome - 30 sep 2018

I thus conclude with a word St Jerome once addressed to St Paulinus of Nola (354-431).  In it the great exegete expressed this very reality, that is, in the Word of God we receive eternity, eternal life.   St Jerome said: “Seek to learn on earth those truths which will remain ever valid in Heaven” (Ep. 53, 10)…. One Minute Reflection – 30 September – Today’s Second Reading: James 5:1–6 – Twenty sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B and The Memorial of St Jerome (347-419) Father and Doctor

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you...James 5:1

REFLECTIONS – “The condemnation is severe because “wealth is idolatry” that seduces people and Jesus knew people could not serve two masters — they must choose either God or money.   Wealth grabs you and doesn’t let you go and it goes against the first commandment to love God with all one’s heart.   It also goes against the second commandment to love one’s neighbour, because a love of wealth destroys the harmonious relationship between us and makes us selfish.   It ruins life, ruins the soul. Wealth can turn people into slaves!   Loving wealth destroys the soul and cheating people of their just wages and benefits, is a mortal sin!”…Pope Francis 24 May 2018come now you rich - james 5 1 - wealth can turn people into slaves - pope francis - 30 sept 2018

PRAYER – Dear and Holy God, let us offer You all our daily struggles against sin and evil. Grant us the strength to resist all forms of idolatory, to seek only You and never to allow the material goods of this world to seduce us.   Sustain us ever more with Your word and help us to find in it, the source of life.   May the prayers of St Jerome be a strength and succour for our journey.   We ask this through Jesus our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, Amen.st-jerome-pray-for-us-2.30 sept 2017

One Minute Reflection – 28 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:18-22

One Minute Reflection – 28 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 9:18-22 – Friday of the Twenty-fifth week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of St Simón de Rojas O.SS. (1552-1624) known as “Father Ave Maria” and the “Apostle of the Ave Maria”

And he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”   And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”...Luke 9:20but who do you say - luke 9 20 - 28 sept 2018

REFLECTION – “In fact, there are two ways of “seeing” and “knowing” Jesus one – that of the crowd – is more superficial, the other – that of the disciples – more penetrating and genuine.   With His twofold question:  “What do the people say?” and “who do you say that I am?”, Jesus invited the disciples to become aware of this different perspective.   The people thought that Jesus was a prophet.   This was not wrong but it does not suffice, it is inadequate.   In fact, it was a matter of delving deep, of recognising the uniqueness of the person of Jesus of Nazareth and His newness.   This is how it still is today, many people draw near to Jesus, as it were, from the outside….Let us make Peter’s answer our own…..
Today too, as in Jesus’ day, it does not suffice to possess the proper confession of faith – it is always necessary to learn anew from the Lord the actual way in which He is Saviour and the path on which we must follow Him.   Indeed, we have to recognise that even for believers, the Cross is always hard to accept.”…Pope Benedict XVI – 29 June 2007today too, as in Jesus' day - pope benedict - 28 sept 2018

PRAYER – Lord God, You hold out the Light of Your Word to those who do not know You. Strengthen in our hearts, the faith You have given us and the Credo we profess, so that no trials may quench the fire Your Spirit has kindled in us.   May the intercession of St Simon de Rojas, grant us the grace of following the way of the Cross, to stand beneath it with our Mother, the Mother of God, Ave Maria!   We make our prayer through Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.hail mary pray for us - 28 sept 2018st simon de rojas pray for us - 28 sept 2018

One Minute Reflection – 27 September – Today’s First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2–11 – Thursday of the Twenty-fifth week in Ordinary Time, Year B – The Memorial of St Vincent de Paul (1581-1660)

What has been is what will be and what has been done is, what will be done..Ecclesiastes 1:9

REFLECTION – “Free your mind from all that troubles you; God will take care of things. You will be unable to make haste in this (choice) without, so to speak, grieving the heart of God because he sees that you do not honour Him sufficiently with holy trust. Trust in Him, I beg you and you will have the fulfilment of what your heart desires.”….St Vincent de Paulwhat has been is what will be - free our mind from all that troubles you - st v de p - no.2. colour - 27 sept 2018

PRAYER – Father, You endowed St Vincent de Paul with the spirit of an apostle to give himself to the poor and to the training of priests.   Give us, good Lord, a share of the same spirit, that we may love what he loved and do as he taught.   Fill us with hope and total trust and abandonment to Your Holy Providence.   Through our Lord Jesus Christ, in union with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.   St Vincent de Paul, pray for us, amen.st-vincent-de-paul-pray-for-us-27 sepy 2017

Quote/s of the Day – 24 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16–18 – Monday of the Twenty fifth week in Ordinary Time, Year B

“No one after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.”…Luke 8:16

Speaking of:  Living the Light

“Do not have Jesus Christ on your lips
and the world in your heart?”do not have jesus christ on your lips - st ignatius of antioch - 24 sept speaking of living the light

“Christianity is not,
a matter of persuading people
of particular ideas
but of inviting them,
to share in the greatness of Christ.”

“A Christian is not his own master,
since all his time belongs to God.”christianity is not a matter of persuading - a christian is not his own master - st ignatius of antioch - speaking of living the light - 24 sept 2018

“We recognise a tree by its fruit
and we ought to be able to recognise
a Christian by his action.
The fruit of faith should be evident in our lives,
for being a Christian is more than making
sound professions of faith.
It should reveal itself in practical and visible ways.
Indeed it is better to keep quiet about our beliefs
and live them out,
than to talk eloquently about what we believe
but fail to live by it.”we recognise a tree by its fruit - st ignatius of antioch - speaking of living the light - no 2- 24 sept 2018

“Christianity is not a matter of persuading people of particular ideas
but of inviting them to share in the greatness of Christ.
So pray that I may never fall into the trap of impressing people
with clever speech but instead, I may learn to speak with humility,
desiring only to impress people with Christ Himself.”christianity-is-not-a-matter-st-ignatius-of-antioch-17-oct-2017

“Labour together with one another;
strive in company together;
run together; suffer together; sleep together;
and awake together,
as the stewards and associates
and servants of God.
Please Him under whom you fight
and from whom you receive your wages.
Let none of you be found a deserter.
Let your baptism endure as your arms;
your faith as your helmet;
your love as your spear;
your patience as a complete panoply.
Let your works be the charge assigned to you,
that you may receive a worthy recompense.
Be long-suffering, therefore, with one another,
in meekness, as God is towards you.
May I have joy of you for ever!
Give.” … (St Ignatius of Antioch: The Epistles)labour together with one another - st ignatius of antioch - 24 sept 2018 - speaking of living the light

One Minute Reflection – 24 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16–18

One Minute Reflection – 24 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 8:16–18 – Monday of the Twenty fifth week in Ordinary Time, Year B

“No one after lighting a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light.”…Luke 8:16

REFLECTION – “Christ,” wrote a Father of the Church, (Saint John Chrysostom), “has left us in this world to be like lamps…, to act like leaven…, to become seed, to bear fruit.”   If our lives were to have this kind of impact, we would not need to open our mouths.  Words would be unnecessary if we could show our works.   There wouldn’t be a single pagan left if we were truly christians.
We should avoid making the mistake of thinking that the apostolate consists, in the witness of a few pious practices.   We are christians, you and I but at the same time and without resolution of continuity, we are citizens and fellow-workers at very clear obligations, which we are to carry out in an exemplary fashion if we want to become holy once and for all.   It is Jesus Christ who urges us: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.   Nor do they light a lamp and then set it under a bushel basket;  it is set on a lampstand , where it gives light to all in the house.   Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Mt 5:14-16)….Saint Josémaria Escriva de Balaguer (1902-1975) Homily in Amigos de Diosno one after lighting a lamp luke 8 16 - christ wrote st john chrysostom - st josemaria - 24 sept 2018

“All of us who have received Baptism, pray that the Holy Spirit help us not to fall into these bad habits that cover the light and that He help us to carry forward, the light we received freely, that light of God that does so much good – the light of friendship, the light of meekness, the light of faith, the light of hope, the light of patience, the light of goodness.”…Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 19 September 2016all of us who have received baptism - pope francis 24 sept 2018

PRAYER – Lord, be the beginning and the end of all that we do, all that we say, in every moment be our Light.   Prompt our actions with Your grace and complete them with Your all-powerful love.   May we always seek Your Face in every circumstance, in every moment, so that Your Light may become our life.   Blessed Anton Martin Slomsek, you lived your life in the Presence of the Holy Face of Christ our Lord, please intercede for us and for all the world.   We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.bl-anton-martin-pray-for-us

One Minute Reflection – 23 September – Today’s Gospel: Mark 9:30–37
– Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B and the Memorial of St Padre Pio (1887-1968)

“If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”…Mark 9:35b

REFLECTION – “The life of a Christian is nothing but a perpetual struggle against self:
there is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection, except at the price of pain.”………St Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968)the-life-of-a-christian-st-pio-23-sept-2018-mark9 35b if any would be first he must be last and servant...

One Minute Reflection – 21 September – The Feast of St Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist- Today’s Gospel: Matthew 9:9–13

“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” …Matthew 9:11b

REFLECTION – “Our Lord chose Matthew, the tax collector, to encourage his fellows to join Him.   He looked on sinners, called them and brought them to sit beside Him.   What a wonderful sight!   Angels stand trembling while publicans, seated, rejoice.   The angels are struck with awe before the Lord’s greatness while sinners eat and drink with Him. The scribes choke with hatred and indignation, the publicans rejoice because of His mercy.   The heavens saw the sight and were filled with wonder;  hell saw it and was maddened.   Satan saw it and was enraged;  death saw it and withered;  the scribes saw it and were much troubled.
There was joy in heaven and happiness among the angels because the rebellious had been persuaded, the recalcitrant quieted and sinners reformed and because publicans had been made righteous.   Just as our Lord did not turn away from the shamefulness of the cross in spite of the entreaties of His friends (Mt 16:22) so he did not refuse the company of publicans in spite of the taunts of His enemies.   He despised mockery and scorned praise, thus accomplishing all that is for mankind’s good.”…St Ephrem (306-373) Father & Doctor of the Church – Commentary on the Gospel, or Diatessaron, 5, 17 (SC 121, p.115 rev.)why does your teacher - matthew 9 11b - he looked on sinners - st ephrem - 21 sept 2018

“He looked at Matthew calmly, peacefully. He looked at him with eyes of mercy; he looked at him as no one had ever looked at him before. And this look unlocked Matthew’s heart; it set him free, it healed him, it gave him hope, a new life, as it did to Zacchaeus, to Bartimaeus, to Mary Magdalene, to Peter, and to each of us. Even if we do not dare raise our eyes to the Lord, he looks at us first. This is our story, and it is like that of so many others. Each of us can say: “I, too, am a sinner, whom Jesus has looked upon”. I ask you, in your homes or in the Church, to be still for a moment and to recall with gratitude and happiness those situations, that moment, when the merciful gaze of God was felt in our lives.”…Pope Francis – 21 September 2015, The Feast of St Matthewjesus looked at him - pope francis - 21 sept 2018 - st matthew

PRAYER – Lord, You showed Your great mercy to Matthew the tax-gatherer,by calling him to become Your Apostle, supported by his prayer and example, may we always answer Your call and live in close union with You.   We make our prayer, in union with God our Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. One Minute Reflection – 20 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:36–50

One Minute Reflection – 20 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:36–50 – Thursday of the Twenty-fourth week in Ordinary Time, Year B and The Memorial of the Korean Martyrs – Sts Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang & Companions – 103 saints and beati & St Eustachius & family (died 2nd century) – Martyrs

“Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much”….Luke 7:47

REFLECTION – “Today, in particular, Jesus brings us to inner conversion:  He explains why He forgives us and teaches us to make forgiveness received from and given to, our brothers and sisters – the “daily bread” of our existence.
…Dear friends, from the Word of God we have just heard emerge practical instructions for our life.   Jesus does not enter into a theoretical discussion with His interlocutors on this section of Mosaic Law;  He is not concerned with winning an academic dispute about an interpretation of Mosaic Law but His goal is to save a soul and reveal that salvation is only found in God’s love.   This is why He came down to the earth, this is why He was to die on the Cross and why the Father was to raise Him on the third day.
Jesus came to tell us, that He wants us all in Paradise and that hell, about which little is said in our time, exists and is eternal for those who close their hearts to His love. …it is stressed that there is no forgiveness without the desire for forgiveness, without opening the heart to forgiveness – here it is highlighted, that only divine forgiveness and divine love, received with an open and sincere heart, give us the strength to resist evil and “to sin no more”, to let ourselves be struck by God’s love so that it becomes our strength.   Jesus’ attitude, thus becomes a model to follow, for every community, which is called to make love and forgiveness the vibrant heart of its life.”…Pope Benedict XVI – Sunday, 25 March 2007her sins which are many - luke 7 47 and there is no forgiveness without - pope benedict - 20 sept 2018

” Salvation enters the heart, only when we open the heart, in the truth of our sins.”…Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 18 Sept 2014 (“Pope Francis” painting by Natalia Tsarkova)salvation enters the heart only when we - pope francis 20 sept 2018

PRAYER – Grant us Lord, a true knowledge of salvation, so that, freed from fear and from the power of our foes, we may serve You faithfully, all the days of our life.   Give us Holy Father, a true desire for repentance and forgiveness and teach us each day, to forgive all with love.   Holy Martyrs, St Eustachius and family and those who so filled with love, died for the faith in Korea, please pray for us that we too may be filled with holy love and courage.   We make our prayer through our Lord, Jesus Christ in union with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever, amen.st eustachius and family martyrs - pray for us - 20 sept 2018holy-martyrs-of-korea-pray-for-us-20-sept-2017

One Minute Reflection – 19 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:31–35 – Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of St Alonso de Orozco (1500 – 1591)

“To what then shall I compare the men of this generation and what are they like? “…Luke 7:31

REFLECTION – “It is actually the ruling class that closes the doors to the way that God wants to save us.   In this sense the powerful dialogues between Jesus and the ruling class of His time are understandable:  they argue, they put Him to the test, they lay traps to see if he falls, because they have resistance to being saved.   Jesus says to them: “I don’t understand you!   You are like those children:  we played the flute for you and you didn’t dance;  we sang a sad song for you and you didn’t weep.   What do you want?”.

We want our own way, we want salvation to be done our way.   It comes back to this “closure” to God’s modus operandi.” …Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 3 October 2014luke 7 31 - to what shall I compare - pope francis - we want our way! - 19 sept 2018

PRAYER – Remember Lord, Your solemn covenant, renewed and consecrated by the blood of the Lamb, so that Your people may obtain forgiveness for their sins and a continued growth in grace.   Turn our hearts from stone to flesh, grant that we may want only Your will.   St Alonso de Orozco, You constantly sought the will of God, please pray for us.   We make our prayer through Christ, the Lamb of God, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.st alonso de orozco pray for us - 19 sept 2018

Thought for the Day – 18 September – The Memorial of St Juan Macias O.P. (1585-1645)

St Juan Macias reflects the life of the many immigrants who come seeking better living conditions.   His life helps us to realise that as immigrants, we have a greater mission – to share the richness of our faith with other people in simple ways.   According to his biographers, St Juan Macias constantly meditated on the verse from the Book of Revelation:  “I saw a new heaven and a new earth” (Rev 21:1).

Faith is a journey on this earth in which all of us are immigrants who seek the new heaven and the new earth.   The life of St Juan Macias teaches us to walk this journey of faith in simple ways – being generous at all times, especially with the poor, the sick and the elderly;  being humble, embracing the reality that we are on this earth only for a while and doing the works of charity, the surest way to salvation.

The life of St Juan Macias teaches, that immigrants go to new worlds to find a better life through giving themselves for the greater mission of sharing the Gospel.   Indeed, this is a very effective way in which our life conditions will really become better, by sharing the Gospel, the Word of God, the life and death of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, in whatever way we can, where we find ourselves!

And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”...Luke 7:14byoung man i say to arise - luke 7 14b - 18 sept 2018

REFLECTION – “Even if the signs of death have removed all hope of life, even if the bodies of the dead lie beside the tomb, yet, at the voice of God, the corpses of those ready to decompose will rise and recover speech.   The son is restored to his mother, he is called back from the tomb, snatched out of it.   And what is this tomb?   Your own.   Your bad habits, your lack of faith.  This is the tomb from which Christ delivers you, this is the tomb from which you will return to life if you listen to the Word of God.  Even if your sin is so grave that you are unable to wash it clean for yourself with your tears of repentance, the Church, your mother, she who intercedes for each one of her children like a widowed mother for her only son, will weep for you.   For she feels for it with a kind of spiritual suffering natural to her when she sees her offspring dragged down to death by lamentable vices…
Let her weep, then, this pious mother; let the crowd accompany her – and not just a crowd but a large crowd – and may it show compassion towards this tender mother. Then you will come to life again in your tomb and will be delivered, the bearers will stop and you will start to speak the words of the living; everyone will be astonished.   The example of one will correct the many and they will praise God for having granted such remedies to us for escaping death.”…St Ambrose (c 340-397) Father & Doctor (A treatise on the Gospel of Saint Luke)young man i say to you arise luke 7 14b - the son is restored to his mother - st ambrose 18 sept 2018

God wants us to stand upright.   He created us to be on our fee,: for this reason, Jesus’ compassion leads to that gesture of healing, to heal us, of which the key phrase is:  “Arise! Stand up, as God created you!”.   Standing up.   “But Father, we fall so often” — “Onward, arise!”.   This is Jesus’ word, always.   His word revives us, gives us hope, refreshes weary hearts, opens us to a vision of the world and of life which transcends suffering and death…Pope Francis – General audience, 10 August 2016young man i say to arise - luke 7 14b - pope francis - god wants us to stand upright - 18 sept 2018

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, help me to be holy in the way that You have laid out for me. Let me stand upright and carry out my duties of my state of life to the full.   Only in You may I attain holiness, learning to give myself, my will, my heart and my to You.   St Joseph of Cupertino, you who were so disadvantaged, achieved by the grace of God, sanctity in this life and now behold His Face through all eternity.   St Juan, in your lowly work, you stood in the Light of Christ, allowing the lowly and rich, to see Him who saved us.   We ask You Holy Father, that You grant, by the intercession pf St Joseph and Juan, that we may reach our heavenly home.   We make our prayer through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.st-joseph-of-cupertino-pray-for-us-18 sept 2017

“When we appeal to the throne of grace,
we do so through Mary,
honouring God by honouring His Mother,
imitating Him by exalting her,
touching the most responsive chord
in the Sacred Heart of Christ,
with the sweet name of Mary.”

One Minute Reflection – 17 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:1-10

One Minute Reflection – 17 September – Today’s Gospel: Luke 7:1-10 – Monday of the Twenty-fourth week in Ordinary Time and the Memorial of St Robert Bellarmine SJ (1542-1621) and St Hildegard von Bingen OSB (1098-1179) both Doctors of the Church

“Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.”…Luke7:6b-7

REFLECTION – “This man was a pagan, for the Jewish people were occupied by the Imperial Roman army at that time.   So it was as a centurion in Judaea that he was commanding his soldiers…
But our Lord, although he was in the midst of the people of Judaea, was already talking about the Church being spread all over the earth wherever His apostles were to be sent (Mt 8:11).   Indeed, the gentiles believed in Him without having see Him… Our Lord did not physically enter the centurion’s house and, even though absent in body, He was present in majesty and healed both that house and its faith.   Similarly, our Lord stood physically only amongst the people of Judaea -other peoples did not see His being born of a virgin, or suffering, or walking, or subject to the condition of human nature, or carrying out divine miracles.   None of these things were done amongst the gentiles and yet it was amongst them that what was said about Him was fulfilled:  “A people I did not know have served me.”   In what way did they serve Him?   The Psalm continues:  “As soon as they heard me, they obeyed me” (Ps 18[17]:44-45).”…St Augustine (354-430) Father and Doctor of the Churchlord i am not worth - luke 7 6b-7 and indeed the gentiles believed - st augustine - 17 sept 2018

“When we go out to meet the Lord, we in some sense are masters of the moment. However, when we allow ourselves to be encountered by Him, He enters into us and renews us from within.   This is what it means for Christ to come, to renew all things, to renew hearts, souls, lives, hope and the journey.   We are on a journey of faith, like the faith of this centurion, to encounter the Lord and to allow ourselves to be encountered by Him.”…Pope Francis – Santa Marta, 2 December 2013lord i am not worth - luke 7 6b-7 and this is what it means pope francis - 17 sept 2018
