Quote/s of the Day – 13 December – Light! Dear St Lucy and St Odilia

Quote/s of the Day – 13 December – The Memorial of St Lucy (c 283-304) Virgin Martyr “Bringer of Light” and St Odilia of Alsace (c 660-720) Virgin Both Patrons of those with eye ailments

I am the light of the world;
he who follows me will not walk in darkness
but will have the light of life.

John 8:12

Saint Lucy’s name (Lucia in Italian) shares the root luc with the Latin word for light, lux. Because of this connection, Saint Lucy is often depicted in art and religious custom as a bringer of light – which also ties in to her Patronage of eyes and sight. Her feast day today, is during Advent when we await the Light of Christ and is in winter, for the Northern Hemisphere, so there is significant iconography of Lucy as a bringer of light in the darkness.

In your light God,
we see light.

Psalm 35:36

Let us pray to St Lucy, for the intercession for all those with eye illnesses and for the protection of the ‘eyes of our faith’ of all of us.

Let your light shine before men

Matthew 5:16

O St Lucy, you preferred to let your eyes be torn out
instead of denying the faith
and defiling your soul
and God, through an extraordinary miracle,
replaced them with another pair of sound and perfect eyes
to reward your virtue and faith,
appointing you as the protector against eye diseases.
I come to you for you to protect my eyesight
and to heal the illness in my eyes.

O St Lucy, preserve the light of my eyes
so that I may see the beauties of creation,
the glow of the sun,
the colour of the flowers
and the smile of children.

Preserve also the eyes of my soul,
the faith, through which I can know my God,
understand His teachings,
recognise His love for me
and never miss the road that leads me
to where you, St Lucy,
can be found in the company of the angels and saints.
St Lucy, protect my eyes and preserve my faith.

St Lucy, “Bringer of Light” Pray for those with eye ailments,
Pray for us all!

Light came into the world.”

John 3:19

St Odilia, born blind – at the age of 12, her bodily eyes were opened and she was equally enlightened by the “eyes of faith” when she was Baptised, Pray for those with eye ailments, Pray for us all that our faith may grow and strengthen as those around us grow more and more blind!

Then again He laid His hands
upon his eyes
and he looked intently
and was restored
and saw everything clearly.

Mark 8:25

Prayer for the Intercession of St Odilia

Merciful God,
I come to You to ask Your aid
that my life may always give You praise.
I ask through the intercession
of St Odilia and all your holy people
to be a beacon of Your Light to all I meet.
Give me holiness of soul and body
and bring me into Your divine Light.
May I obtain these favours,
as well as my special prayer,
St Odelia, pray for my eyes
and the eyes of my faith.
Through the merits of Our Saviour, Jesus Christ,
Your Son, our Lord,
Who lives with you and the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever.
Amen.

Quote/s of the Day – 22 September – “He sent them out …” Luke 9:2

Quote/s of the Day – 22 September – Readings: Ezra 9: 5-9; Tobit 13: 2-4, 7-8; Luke 9: 1-6

“He sent them out …”

Luke 9:2

“Let your light
shine before men.”

Matthew 5:16

“Preach the gospel to every creature”

Mark 16:15

“Zeal for your house will consume me.”

John 2:17

“A servant is not greater than his master,
nor is a messenger greater than the one
who sent him.”

John 13:16

“My children, eternal life is being offered to us,
the kingdom of heaven is made ready
and Christ’s inheritance awaits us …
So let us run from now on with increased energy
and above all you, lazy, recalcitrant,
dull of heart, friends of murmuring who,
unless you improve, are like the cursed fig tree.
… Let us seek out the fight,
bravely pour with our sweat,
adorn ourselves with crowns,
gain praises and gather up,
like a treasure,
“what eye has not seen
and ear has not heard
and what has not entered the human heart”
(1 Cor 2:9).

St Theodore the Studite (759-826)

Our life is:
“To breathe God in and out.
To find God in everything.
To reveal God to all.
To radiate the presence of God.”

St Vincent Pallotti (1795-1850)

Thought for the Day – 10 April – Word and Example

Thought for the Day – 10 April – Meditations with Antonio Cardinal Bacci (1881-1971)

Word and Example

“Good example is the most effective sermon and we are all obliged to preach in this fashion.
God entrusted the care of his neighbour to each one of us (Ecclus 17:12).
Each of us is responsible for the salvation of those who have been entrusted to him in this way, especially for the salvation of those who live near him and are influenced by his behaviour.
Jesus’ exhortations in this regard, have the force of a command.
“Let your light shine before men,” He says, “in order that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Mt 5:16).
St Paul urges us to “provide good things, not only in the sight of God but also, in the sight of all men” (Cf Rom 12:17).
This must not be interpreted as meaning, that we should be anxious for others to see our good deeds, in order that they may respect and praise us.
It is our own undoing if our good example is tainted with ostentation, for we should lose all merit for it and should deserve to hear the words of the Eternal Judge: “You have received your reward” (Cf Mt 6:5).
Our good example should be inspired only by the love of God and of our neighbour but never, by self-love.
By saving the souls of others, we save our own!”

Antonio Cardinal Bacci

“Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.“…Matthew 5:16just so, your light must shine - matthew 5 16 - 12 june 2018

REFLECTION – “…We have a task and a responsibility for the gift received:  the light of faith, which is in us through Christ and the action of the Holy Spirit, we must not keep as if it were our property.   Instead, we are called to make it shine in the world, to give it to others through good works.   And how much the world needs the light of the Gospel, which transforms, heals and guarantees salvation to those who receive it!    By giving itself, the light of our faith is not extinguished but reinforced.   Instead, it can fail, if we do not nourish it with love and with works of charity….Therefore, the mission of Christians in society is to give “flavour” to life with the faith and love that Christ has given us.”…Pope Francis, Angelus 5 Feb 2017we have a task and a responsibility - pope francis - light and salt - 12 june 2018

PRAYER – Holy Almighty Father, we pray that we may be the light of Your divine Son and the salt of the earth.   Help us, we pray, to ever strive to be both the light and salt of the earth and “may the protection of Mary Most Holy, first disciple of Jesus and model, be of help to believers who live every day their vocation and mission in history.   May our Mother help us, to let ourselves always be purified and illumined by the Lord, to become in turn “salt of the earth” and “light of the world.” …(Pope Francis Angelus 5 Feb 2017)sancta maria -mary most holy - pray for us - 10 may 2018
