Quote/s of the Day – 28 January – St Thomas speaks on the Holy Eucharist

Quote/s of the Day – 28 January – The Memorial of St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) Doctor of the Church

St Thomas speaks on the Holy Eucharist

“O precious and wonderful banquet
that brings us salvation
and contains all sweetness!”

“O how unspeakable is this Sacrament
which sets our affections ablaze with charity.
… It is the fulfillment of Christ’s Mystical Body.”

“The Eucharist is the Sacrament of Love.
It signifies Love,
It produces love.
The Eucharist is the consummation
of the whole spiritual life.”

“The proper effect of the Eucharist
is the transformation of man into God.”

“As Christ’s Passion does not produce it’s effect
on those who do not hold Him as they should,
so also, those do not attain heaven
through this Sacrament, who receive Him unworthily.
Accordingly, Augustine writes:
“The Sacrament is one thing, it’s virtue another.
Many receive from the altar and, receiving it, are dead.
Eat, therefore, heavenly bread, carry innocence to the altar.”
So it is not surprising, that those who do not keep a pure heart,
fail to gain the effect of the Sacrament.”

Adoro te Devote
Trans. Fr Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ (1844-1889)

Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore,
Masked by these bare shadows,
shape and nothing more,
See, Lord, at Thy service low lies here a heart
Lost, all lost in wonder at the God Thou art.

Seeing, touching, tasting are in Thee deceived –
How says trusty hearing? that shall be believed,
What God’s Son has told me, take for truth I do,
Truth Himself speaks truly or there’s nothing true.

On the cross Thy godhead made no sign to men,
Here Thy very manhood steals from human ken –
Both are my confession, both are my belief,
And I pray the prayer of the dying thief.

I am not like Thomas, wounds I cannot see,
But can plainly call Thee Lord and God as he,
Let me to a deeper faith daily nearer move,
Daily make me harder hope and dearer love.

O Thou our reminder of Christ crucified,
Living Bread, the life of us for whom He died,
Lend this life to me then – feed and feast my mind,
There be Thou the sweetness man was meant to find.

Bring the tender tale true of the Pelican,
Bathe me, Jesu Lord, in what Thy bosom ran—
Blood whereof a single drop has power to win
All the world forgiveness of its world of sin.

Jesu, whom I look at shrouded here below,
I beseech Thee send me what I thirst for so,
Some day to gaze on Thee face to face in light
And be blest forever with Thy glory’s sight.
Amen

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

Speaking of: “The Most Holy Eucharist/The Holy Mass”

“I am going to the Church’s press, to the altar.
That is where the sacred wine of this delicious
and unique grape’s blood, flows constantly
and from which very few have the good fortune,
to be able to become intoxicated.
There, you know that – because I cannot do otherwise –
I will present you, to the Father of Heaven
united with His Son,
it is in Him and with Him,
that I am entirely yours in the Lord.”i am going to the Church's press, the altar - st pio - 4 june 2018

“Lord Jesus, save them all.
I offer myself as a victim for all of them.
Make me stronger,
take my heart,
fill it with Your love
and then ask of me,
whatever You want.”

St Pio of Pietrelcina “Padre Pio” OFM CAP. (1887-1968)lord jesus, save them all - st padre pio - 4 june 2018

“However it is very necessary to nourish one’s soul also
and since nothing created, can nourish the soul, which is spirit,
God wished to give Himself as food.”

“If only Christians could understand these words
of our Lord saying to them:
“In spite of your wretchedness, I desire to see from near,
this beautiful soul I have created for Myself.
I have made it so great,
that there is none but Me,
who is able to fill her.
I have made it so pure,
that there is only my Body
capable of feeding it.”

St John Marie Vianney (1786-1859)however it is very necessary & if only christians could understand - st john vianney - 4 june 2018 - speaking of the Eucharist

Quote/s of the Day – 14 January -Speaking of the Holy Eucharist from the Fathers of the Church

Quote/s of the Day – 14 January -Speaking of the Holy Eucharist from the Fathers of the Church

“Calling her children about her, she [the Church]
nourishes them with holy milk, that is, with the Infant Word…
The Word is everything to a child –
both Father and Mother, both Instructor and Nurse.
“EAT MY FLESH,” He says, “AND DRINK MY BLOOD.”
The Lord supplies us with these intimate nutriments.
He delivers over His Flesh and pours out His Blood
and nothing is lacking for the growth of His children.
O incredible mystery!”
(Instructor of Children 1:6:42,1,3)

St Clement of Alexandria (c 150-216) Church Father

“The flesh feeds on THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST,
so that the SOUL TOO may fatten on God.”
(Resurrection of the Dead 8:3)

“The Sacrament of the Eucharist,
which the Lord commanded to be taken
at meal times and by all, we take even before
daybreak in congregations…
… We take anxious care lest something
of our Cup or Bread should fall upon the ground…”
(The Crown 3:3-4)

Tertullian (c 155-250) Church Father

“You see how the ALTARS are no longer sprinkled
with the blood of oxen but consecrated
BY THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST.”
(Homilies on Joshua 2:1)

“You are accustomed to take part in the divine mysteries,
so you know how, when you have received
THE BODY OF THE LORD,
you reverently exercise every care lest a particle of it fall
and lest anything of the consecrated gift perish….
how is it that you think neglecting the word of God
a lesser crime than neglecting HIS BODY?”
(Homilies on Exodus 13:3)

Origen (c 185-254) Church Fatherthe holy eucharist-holy mass - church fathers - 14 jan 2018

“If Christ Jesus, our Lord and God,
is Himself the High Priest of God the Father;
and if He offered HIMSELF as a SACRIFICE
to the Father
and if He commanded that this be done in
commemoration of Himself –
then certainly the priest,
who imitates that which Christ did,
TRULY FUNCTIONS IN PLACE OF CHRIST.”
(Letters 63:14)
