All Souls’ Day and Memorials of the Saints – 2 November

All Souls Day (Commemoration): Feast in commemoration of the faithful departed in Purgatory. Abbot Odilo of Cluny instituted it in the monasteries of his congregation in 998, other religious orders took up the observance and it was adopted by various dioceses and gradually by the whole Church. The Office of the Dead must be recited by the clergy on this day and Pope Benedict XV granted to all priests the privilege of saying three Masses of requiem –
• one for the souls in Purgatory
• one for the intention of the Holy Father
• one for the priest’s
If the feast should fall on Sunday it is kept on 3 November.

Martyrs of Isfahan – 5+ saints: Acindynus, Pegasius and Anempodistus were Persian priests who were imprisoned, tortured, interrogated and martyred in the persecutions of king Sapor II of Persia; he considered any Christian to be a Roman spy and anti-Persian. The three were brought back to life, miraculously healed, freed from their chains and began preaching Christianity, miraculously healing Sapor II in the process. This defiance enraged Sapor so much that he ordered them executed again; they were thrown into a cauldron of molten lead, but walked out unharmed. This miracle brought one of the torturers, Aphthonius, to convert; he was immediately martyred. Other attempts were made to kill them, and they emerged each time unharmed. Senator Elpidiphorus led a group speaking in favour of the Christians for their courage and faith; he was immediately executed. In the end the original three Christians were burned to death. Martyrs all – Acindynus, Anempodistus, Aphthonius, Elpidephorus and Pegasius.
They were born ibn Persia and Died:
• c.350 in Isfahan, Persia
• relics transferred to Constantinople and enshrined in a church dedicated to them
• some relics taken to France in 1204 during the 4th Crusade
• relics in France were lost when hidden from anti-Christian forces in the French Revolution
• relics in France re-discovered in 1892 in Grozon.

Martyrs of Sebaste – 10 saints: A group of ten soldiers in the imperial Roman army of Emperor Licinius Licinianus who were executed together for refusing to burn incense as a sacrifice to the emperor. The only details that have survived are five of their names – Agapius, Cartherius, Eudoxius, Styriacus and Tobias. They were burned at the stake in 315 in Sebaste (in modern Turkey).

Devotion for the Month of November – The Holy Souls/The Faithful Departed

Devotion for the Month of November – The Holy Souls/The Faithful Departednovember - the month of the holy souls

As Christmas approaches, it is natural that our thoughts turn to those whom we have loved who are no longer with us.

How appropriate, then, that the Catholic Church offers us November, which begins with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory—those who have died in grace, yet who failed in this life to make satisfaction for all of their sins.

In recent years, perhaps no Catholic doctrine has been more misunderstood by Catholics themselves than the doctrine of Purgatory.   Consequently, we tend to downplay it, even seem a little embarrassed by it and it is the Holy Souls who suffer because of our discomfort with the doctrine.

Purgatory is not, as many people think, one last trial.   All of those who make it to Purgatory will one day be in Heaven.   Purgatory is where those who have died in grace but who have not fully atoned for the temporal punishments resulting from their sins, go to finish their atonement before entering Heaven.   A soul in Purgatory may suffer but he has the assurance that he will ultimately enter Heaven when his punishment is complete.   Catholics believe Purgatory is an expression of God’s love, His desire to cleanse our souls of all that might keep us from experiencing the fullness of joy in Heaven.

As Christians, we don’t travel through this world alone.   Our salvation is wrapped up with the salvation of others and charity requires us to come to their aid.   The same is true of the Holy Souls.   In their time in Purgatory, they can pray for usand we should pray for the faithful departed that they may be freed from the punishment for their sins and enter into Heaven.

We should pray for the dead throughout the year, especially on the anniversary of their death but in this Month of the Holy Souls, we should devote some time every day to prayer for the dead.   We should start with those closest to us—our mother and father, for instance—but we should also offer prayers for all the souls, and especially for those most forsaken.

We believe that those Holy Souls for whom we pray will continue to pray for us after they have been released from Purgatory.   If we live Christian lives, we too will likely find ourselves in Purgatory someday and our acts of charity toward the Holy Souls there now will ensure that they remember us before the throne of God when we are most in need of prayers.   It’s a comforting thought and one that should encourage us, especially in this month of November, to offer our prayers for the Holy Souls.

Let us Pray:

Incline Your ear, O Lord, unto our prayers,
wherein we humbly pray to You.
to show Your mercy upon the souls of Your servants,
whom You have commanded to pass out of this world,
that You would place them in the region of peace and light
and bid them be partakers with Your Saints.
Through Christ our Lord.   Amen incline your ear o lord - nov month of the holy souls

Salutation of the Blessed Virgin
By St Francis of Assisi (1181–1226)

Hail, holy Lady, most holy Queen,
Mary, Mother of God, ever Virgin;
chosen by the most holy Father in heaven,
consecrated by Him,
with His most holy beloved Son
and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter:
on you descended and in you still remains
all the fullness of grace and every good.
Hail, His Palace; hail, His Tabernacle;
hail, His Robe, hail, His Handmaid;
hail, His Mother;
and hail, all holy Virtues, who,
by the grace and inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
are poured into the hearts of the faithful.
So that, faithless no longer,
they may be made faithful servants of God
through you.

Thought for the day – 7 October – The Memorial of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel.  The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death and resurrection.  The Our Fathers remind us that Jesus’ Father is the initiator of salvation.  The Hail Marys remind us to join with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly and heavenly existence. T he Glory Bes remind us that the purpose of all life is the glory of the Trinity.

The rosary appeals to many.  It is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God.  We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever..(Fr Don Miller OFM)

THE SEVEN BLESSINGS OF THE ROSARY

“The Rosary, recited with meditation on the mysteries, brings about the following marvelous results:

1. It gradually gives us a perfect knowledge of Jesus Christ;
2. It purifies our souls, washing away sin;
3. It gives us victory over all our enemies;
4. It makes it easy for us to practice virtue;
5. It sets us on fire with love of Our Blessed Lord;
6. It enriches us with graces and merits;
7. It supplies us with what is needed to pay,
all our debts to God and to our fellow men
and finally, it obtains all kinds of graces for us from Almighty God.”

St Louis Marie Grignion De Montfort (1673-1716)the seven blessings of the rosary - st louis de montfort - 2017

The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way,
not mechanical and superficial but profoundly,
it brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation.
It contains within itself the healing power
of the Most Holy Name of Jesus,
invoked with faith and love,
at the centre of each “Hail Mary”.

Queen of the most Holy Rosary

O Queen of the most holy Rosary,
in these times of brazen impiety,
show again your power,
with the signs which accompanied your victories of old
and from the throne where you are seated,
dispensing pardon and grace,
in pity watch over the Church of your Son,
His Vicar and every order of the clergy and laity,
suffering in grievous warfare.
Hasten, O most powerful destroyer of heresy,
hasten the hour of mercy,
as the hour of judgment is daily challenged
by innumberable offences.
Obtain for me, the lowest of men,
kneeling suppliant in your presence,
the grace which may enable me
to live a just life on earth
and reign with the just in Heaven,
whilst with the faithful throughout the world,
O Queen of the most holy Rosary,
I salute you and cry out:
Queen of the most holy Rosary, pray for us! Amen.

Saint of the Day – 7 October – Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary/Our Lady of Victory

Saint of the Day – 7 October – Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary also known as Our Lady of Victory – Patronages – Rosary, United States, 9 diocese, 8 cities.   The Feast of the Holy Rosary, is celebrated on 7 October, the anniversary of the decisive victory of the combined fleet of the Holy League of 1571 over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto.

Our Lady of Victory
In 1571, Pope St. Pius V organized a coalition of forces from Spain and smaller Christian kingdoms, republics and military orders, to rescue Christian outposts in Cyprus, particularly the Venetian outpost at Famagusta which, however, surrendered after a long siege on 1 August before the Christian forces set sail.   On 7 October 1571, the Holy League, a coalition of southern European Catholic maritime states, sailed from Messina, Sicily and met a powerful Ottoman fleet in the Battle of Lepanto.   Knowing that the Christian forces were at a distinct materiel disadvantage, the holy pontiff, Pope Pius V, called for all of Europe to pray the Rosary for victory and led a rosary procession in Rome.

After about five hours of fighting on the northern edge of the Gulf of Corinth, off western Greece, the combined navies of the Papal States, Venice and Spain managed to stop the Ottoman navy, slowing the Ottoman advance to the west and denying them access to the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas.   If the Ottomans had won then there was a real possibility that an invasion of Italy could have followed so that the Ottoman sultan, already claiming to be emperor of the Romans, would have been in possession of both New and Old Rome.

Pius V instituted “Our Lady of Victory” as an annual feast to commemorate the victory at Lepanto, which he attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary.   Dedications to Our Lady of Victory preceded this papal declaration.   In particular, Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester built the first shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Victory in thanks for the Catholic victory over the Albigensians at the Battle of Muret on 12 September.

In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title of the “Feast of Our Lady of Victory” to “Feast of the Holy Rosary” Dominican friar Juan Lopez in his 1584 book on the rosary states that the feast of the rosary was offered “in memory and in perpetual gratitude of the miraculous victory that the Lord gave to his Christian people that day against the Turkish armada”.

In 1671 the observance of this festival was extended by Clement X to the whole of Spain, and somewhat later Clement XI, after the victory over the Turks gained by Prince Eugene in the Battle of Petrovaradin on 6 August 1716 (the feast of Our Lady of the Snows), commanded the feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church, assigning it to the first Sunday in October.

A set of “proper” lessons in the second nocturn were conceded by Benedict XIII. Leo XIII raised the feast to the rank of a double of the second class and added to the Litany of Loreto the invocation “Queen of the Most Holy Rosary”.   On this feast, in every church in which the Rosary confraternity has been duly erected, a plenary indulgence toties quoties is granted upon certain conditions to all who visit therein the Rosary chapel or statue of Our Lady.   This has been called the “Portiuncula” of the Rosary.

In 1960 Pope John XXIII changed the title to “Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary”.oct 7 - our lady of the rosaryROSARY INFO

Prayers to accompany the Holy Rosary By Blessed Bartholomew Longo

Prayers to accompany the Holy Rosary
By Blessed Bartholomew Longo

First Joyful Mystery:   The Annunciation.
O Mary, immaculate lily, through the joy you felt when at the Angel’s message you became the Mother of God:  obtain for me the virtue of purity and of humility, that I may become your worthy son/daughter and the brother/sister of Jesus.

Second Joyful Mystery:  The Visitation.
O Mary, Mother of grace and of charity, through the joy you felt when, upon visiting Elizabeth, you brought joy to the home of Zechariah and the Baptist was sanctified at the sound of your voice:   visit my soul, let it hear your Motherly voice and fill it with love of God and love of neighbour.

Third Joyful Mystery:   The Birth of Jesus.
O Mary, mirror of humility and of poverty, through the joy you felt when, turned away by the inhabitants of Bethlehem and forced to take refuge in a stable from the cold and darkness, you gave birth to the Divine Redeemer:  grant that by accepting scorn and poverty I remain faithful to grace and gain the reward of eternal salvation by means of good works.

Fourth Joyful Mystery:  The Presentation.
O Mary, the perfect model of obedience and of sacrifice, you who offered Jesus to the Eternal Father on our behalf:  place your Child upon my bosom, that, together with you, I may offer Him the sacrifice of my passions and of my whole being.

Fifth Joyful Mystery:  The Finding in the Temple.
O Mary, a shining example of patience, through the joy you felt when, after three days of anxiously searching, you found Jesus in the Temple:  grant that I too, seeking Jesus with love in every moment of my life in imitation of you, may find Him at last in your arms at the hour of my death, never to lose Him again.

First Sorrowful Mystery:  The Agony in the Garden.
O Grieving Virgin, through the anguish of that saddest of nights in which Jesus in agony in the garden sweat blood at the sight of my sins and, betrayed, was tied as a criminal: obtain for me the perfect sorrow of my sins and perseverance in prayer, that I may never again betray His most loving Heart.

Second Sorrowful Mystery:  The Scourging at the Pillar.
O most grieving Mother, through the pain you felt in knowing that your innocent and holy Son had been publicly stripped and bloodily scourged with biting whips:  obtain for me the spirit of true repentance and the virtue of chastity and of the mortification of the senses.

Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns.
O Mother of sorrows, through the atrocious torment which pierced your heart when you saw Jesus, the King of glory, then become the King of suffering, crowned with thorns and shame, with a reed in His hands, derided by the crowd:  ah!, encircle my intellect and my heart with these very thorns, that I may never offend Him again with evil thoughts and sentiments;  and obtain for me pureness in my thoughts and the right intentions in my actions.

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery:  The Carrying of the Cross.
O grieving Mother, through the martyrdom of your heart, when you met your Son weighed down beneath the heavy cross, staining the road to Calvary with His blood: grant that I, clinging to Jesus’ cross, follow behind, daily carrying the cross of my troubles with meekness and with perfect conformity to the will of God.

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery:  The Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord.
O Queen of the Martyrs, through the extreme spasm of your heart when you witnessed Jesus dying on the cross in the midst of a thousand torments, forsaken and without comfort:  grant that I die to myself, to the world and to sin, and live in the heart of Jesus alone, having abandoned myself in His most holy arms.

First Glorious Mystery:   The Resurrection.
O Most Holy Mother of God, through the joy you felt in seeing Jesus risen from the dead and surrounded in glory:  obtain for me that I too rise from the death of sin to a life of grace and of faith and may persevere in it till my very last breath.

Second Glorious Mystery:  The Ascension.
O Queen of the Heavens, through the joy you experienced in seeing Jesus rising to Heaven triumphant as King of the Universe and as our Advocate by His Father:   obtain His blessing for me also, so that I be changed by Him from a sinner into a saint; moreover, by separating me from all earthly affection, through the virtue of hope may He kindle in me the desire of paradise.

Third Glorious Mystery:   The Descent of the Holy Spirit.
O Queen of the Universe, through the joy you felt when the Holy Spirit descended on you and on the Apostles:  grant that He come into my soul and fill it with His holy gifts and the heavenly fruits of charity, of joy, of patience and of peace.

Fourth Glorious Mystery:   The Assumption.
O Queen, Lady of the Angels, through the joy you experienced when you were taken into heaven body and soul: come with Jesus to assist me at the hour of my death and lead me with you to everlasting happiness.

Fifth Glorious Mystery:  The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
O Queen of all the Saints and the honour and delight of humankind, through the joy you felt when the Most Holy Trinity crowned you as Queen of Heaven and Earth: inflame me with your love and with the love of God, that I may love and serve you on earth and glorify you, O Queen of my heart, in heaven.

Thought for the Day – 5 October – The Memorial of Blessed Bartholomew Longo – Apostle of the Holy Rosary

Before entering the Shrine to recite the Holy Rosary with you, I paused briefly before the tomb of Bl Bartolo Longo and, praying, I asked myself:  “Where did this great apostle of Mary find the energy and perseverance he needed to bring such an impressive work, now known across the world, to completion? Was it not in the Rosary, which he accepted as a true gift from Our Lady’s Heart?”   Yes, that truly was how it happened!   The experience of the Saints bears witness to it:  this popular Marian prayer is a precious spiritual means to grow in intimacy with Jesus and to learn at the school of the Blessed Virgin always to fulfil the divine will.   It is contemplation of the mysteries of Christ in spiritual union with Mary as the Servant of God Paul VI stressed in his Apostolic Exhortation Marialis cultus (n. 46) and as my venerable Predecessor John Paul II abundantly illustrated in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae that today I once again present in spirit to the Community of Pompeii and to each one of you.   You who live and work here in Pompeii, especially you, dear priests, men and women religious and lay people involved in this unique portion of the Church, are all called to make Bl. Bartolo Longo’s charism your own and to become, to the extent and in the way that God grants to each one, authentic apostles of the Rosary.

To be apostles of the Rosary, however, it is necessary to experience personally the beauty and depth of this prayer which is simple and accessible to everyone.   It is first of all necessary to let the Blessed Virgin take one by the hand to contemplate the Face of Christ:  a joyful, luminous, sorrowful and glorious Face.   Those who, like Mary and with her, cherish and ponder the mysteries of Jesus assiduously, increasingly assimilate his sentiments and are conformed to him.   In this regard, I would like to quote a beautiful thought of Bl Bartolo Longo:  “Just as two friends, frequently in each other’s company, tend to develop similar habits”, he wrote, “so too, by holding familiar converse with Jesus and the Blessed Virgin, by meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary and by living the same life in Holy Communion, we can become, to the extent of our lowliness, similar to them and can learn from these supreme models a life of humility, poverty, hiddenness, patience and perfection” (I Quindici Sabati del Santissimo Rosario, 27th edition, Pompeii, 1916, p. 27: cited in Rosarium Virginis Mariae, n. 15).   POPE BENEDICT XVI – 19 October 2008

Our Morning Offering – 5 October – The Memorial of Blessed Bartholomew Longo – Apostle of the Holy Rosary

In this prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary, we ask the Virgin Mary to help us to cultivate a habit of interior prayer through the daily recitation of the rosary. We pray this prayer, particularly during the month of October, as we daily cultivate the habit of praying the Holy Rosary. This is the object of all of our prayers: to arrive at the point where we can “pray without ceasing,” as Saint Paul tells us to do.

TO OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY

O Virgin Mary,
grant that the recitation of your Rosary
may be for me each day,
in the midst of my manifold duties,
a bond of unity in my actions,
a tribute of filial piety,
a sweet refreshment,
an encouragement to walk joyfully
along the path of duty.
Grant, above all, O Virgin Mary,
that the study of the mysteries may form in my soul,
little by little, a luminous atmosphere, pure, strengthening
and fragrant, which may penetrate my understanding,
my will, my heart, my memory, my imagination, my whole being.
So shall I acquire the habit of praying while I work,
by interior acts of admiration and of supplication,
or by aspirations of love.
I ask this of you, O Queen of the Holy Rosary,
through Saint Dominic and Blessed Bartholomew Longo,
your sons of predilection,
the renowned preachers of your mysteries
and the faithful imitator of your virtues. Amen

OCTOBER – The Month of the HOLY ROSARY

OCTOBER – The Month of the HOLY ROSARYOCTOBER - THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY

The Feast of the Rosary is celebrated on 7 October and the month of October is traditionally the month of the rosary.  Without having to say, this is the month to commit to praying the rosary more regularly and if you can, every day.

Why did our Mother Mary ask us to pray the rosary at many of her approved apparitions such as at Fatima?   Why should we pray at all?

The rosary is a powerful prayer and weapon and can affect and benefit us significantly each time we pray it.  The most important reason for strongly encouraging the practice of the Rosary according to Pope John Paul II is that it represents a most effective means of fostering among the faithful that commitment to the contemplation of the Christian mystery;  the life of Jesus and Mary’s role in Salvation. Contemplation is a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus.

The rosary is not only a vocal prayer but also a meditative prayer.

The Devotion:

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Pope Leo XIII personally started the practice of devoting October to the Rosary devotion. In a letter of 1 September 1883, mindful of the Rosary’s power to strengthen faith and foster a life of virtue, he outlined the triumphs of the Rosary in past times and admonished the faithful to dedicate the month of October to the Blessed Virgin through the daily recitation of her Rosary in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, in order to obtain through her intercession the grace that God would console and defend His Church in her sufferings.

Never mind if you’re a bit rusty, or if it’s been ages since you last prayed your rosary.   It’s never too late to begin again and everyone deserves to experience the power of the rosary.

Pope Benedict XVI in an address at the Basilica of St Mary Major where he prayed the rosary with the faithful said:

Today, together we confirm that the Holy Rosary is not a pious practice banished to the past, like prayers of other times thought of with nostalgia. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new Springtime.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourish for Jesus and his Mother, Mary.

In the current world, so dispersive, this prayer helps to put Christ at the centre, as the Virgin did, who meditated within all that was said about her Son and also what he did and said.  When reciting the Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are relived.   The various steps of Christ’s mission are traced.   With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus.   Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our time, of our city, through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory.

May Mary help us to welcome within ourselves the grace emanating from these mysteries, so that through us we can “water” society, beginning with our daily relationships and purifying them from so many negative forces, thus opening them to the newness of God.

The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, it brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation.  It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the centre of each “Hail Mary”.

Quote/s of the Day – September, the Month of Our Lady of Sorrows

“When she was asked to become the mother of the Messiah,
Mary’s faith enabled her to give a humble and generous response….
Mary’s faith was frequently tested during the public life of Jesus,
especially when she witnessed the rejection of her son.
At the foot of the cross, her pilgrimage of faith had its moment
of most severe testing. Mary continued to believe that,
because Jesus was the Son of God,
His sacrifice would bring salvation to humanity.”

“From the nature of His work, the Redeemer
ought to have associated His Mother with His work.
For this reason we invoke her under the title of
Co-redemptrix.   She gave us the Saviour,

as far as the Cross itself, sharing with Him the
sorrows of the agony and of the death in which
Jesus consummated the redemption of mankind.”

Thought for the Day – 15 September – The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

“Jesus came into the world to learn how to be a man and by being a man, walk with men. He came into the world to obey and He obeyed.   But He learned this obedience from suffering.   Adam left Paradise with a promise, a promise that lasted for so many centuries.   Today, through this obedience, this self-abnegation, this humiliation, through Jesus, that promise becomes hope.   And the people of God walk with sure hope.   Even the Mother, ‘the New Eve’, as Paul himself calls her, in order to participate in her Son’s journey, learned, suffered and obeyed.   And thus she becomes Mother”.
The Gospel shows us Mary at the foot of the Cross.   Jesus says to John, “Behold your mother.”   Mary – the Pope said – “is anointed Mother.

And this is our hope.   We are not orphans, we have Mothers:  Mother Mary.   But the Church is Mother and the Mother Church is anointed when it takes the same path of Jesus and Mary: the path of obedience, the path of suffering and when she has that attitude of continually learning the path of the Lord.   These two women – Mary and the Church – carry on the hope that is Christ, they give us Christ, they bring forth Christ in us. Without Mary, there would be no Jesus Christ; without the Church, we cannot go forward.

“Two women and two mothers” – continued the Pope Francis – “and next to them our soul, which in the words of Isaac, the abbot of Stella, is “feminine” and is like “Mary and the Church.

Today, looking at this woman by the Cross, steadfast in following her Son in His suffering to learn obedience, looking at her we see the Church and look at our Mother. And also, we look at our little soul that will never be lost, if it continues to be a woman close to these two great women who accompany us in life:  Mary and the Church.  And just as our fathers left Paradise with a promise, today we can go forward with a hope: the hope that our Mother Mary, steadfast at the Cross and our Holy Mother, the hierarchical Church, give us.” (Pope Francis 15 September 2014 “Santa Marta”)

“When a woman is in travail, she has sorrow, because her hour has come;  but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world’ (Jn. 16:21).   The first part of Christ’s words refer to the “pangs of childbirth” which belong to the heritage of original sin;  at the same time these words indicate the link that exists between the woman’s motherhood and the Paschal Mystery. For this mystery also includes the Mother’s sorrow at the foot of the cross – the Mother who through faith shares in her Son’s amazing “self-emptying”:  ‘This is perhaps the deepest ‘kenosis’ of faith in human history.”

St John Paulwhen a woman is in travail....st john paul

“While other martyrs suffered by sacrificing their own lives, the Blessed Virgin suffered by sacrificing her Son’s life, a Life that she loved far more than her own;  so that she not only suffered in her soul all that her Son endured in His Body but moreover, the sight of her Son’s torments, brought more grief to her heart, than if she had endured them all in her own person”.

St Anselmwhile other martyrs - st anselm

‘By the cross of our salvation
Mary stood in desolation
While the Saviour hung above
All her human powers failing,
Sorrow’s sword, at last prevailing,
Stabs and breaks her heart of love…
Virgin Mary, full of sorrow,
From your love I ask to borrow
Love enough to share your pain.
Make my heart to burn with fire,
Make Christ’s love my own desire,
Who for love of me was slain.’

September: Month of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

September: Month of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Seven Sorrows of
the Blessed Virgin Mary
1. The prophecy of Simeon
2. The Flight to Egypt
3. Loss of Child Jesus for 3 days
4. Meeting Jesus carrying His Cross
5. The Crucifixion of Jesus
6. The Pieta – receiving Jesus’ Body
7. The Burial of Jesus

The month of September is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
Devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary dates from the twelfth century, when it made its appearance in monastic circles under the influence of St Anselm and St Bernard.
The Cistercians and then the Servites undertook to propagate it.
The Devotion became widespread in the fourteenth and especially the fifteenth centuries, particularly in the Rhineland and Flanders, where Confraternities of the Sorrowful Mother sprang up. It was in this context that the first liturgical formularies in her honour were composed. A provincial council of Mainz in 1423 made use of these in establishing a “Feast of the Sorrows of Mary” in reparation for Hussite profanations of her images.

In 1494 the feast appeared in Bruges, where the Precious Blood of Christ was venerated; later on it made its way into France. It did not, however, become widespread in France before Benedict XIII included it in the Roman Calendar in 1727.

God vouchsafed to select the very things about Him which are most incommunicable and in a most mysteriously real way communicate them to her.   See how He had already mixed her up with the eternal designs of creation, making her almost a partial cause and partial model of it.   Our Lady’s co-operation in the redemption of the world gives us a fresh view of her magnificence.   Neither the Immaculate Conception nor the Assumption will give us a higher idea of Mary’s exaltation than the title of co-redemptress.   Her sorrows were not necessary for the redemption of the world but in the counsels of God they were inseparable from it.   They belong to the integrity of the divine plan.   Are not Mary’s mysteries Jesus’ mysteries and His mysteries hers?   The truth appears to be that all the mysteries of Jesus and Mary were in God’s design as one mystery.   Jesus Himself was Mary’s sorrow, seven times repeated, aggravated sevenfold.   During the hours of the Passion, the offering of Jesus and the offering of Mary were tied in one.   They kept pace together;  they were made of the same materials;  they were perfumed with kindred fragrance;  they were lighted with the same fire;  they were offered with kindred dispositions.   The two things were one simultaneous oblation, interwoven each moment through the thickly crowded mysteries of that dread time, unto the eternal Father, out of two sinless hearts, that were the hearts of Son and Mother, for the sins of a guilty world which fell on them contrary to their merits but according to their own free will.

Thought for the Day – 3 August – August the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Thought for the Day – 3 August – August the Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Pope Paul VI said: “Mary offers a calm vision and a reassuring word to the people of our time, torn as we often are between anguish and hope, defeated as we can be by our own limitations and assailed by limitless aspirations, troubled in our minds and divided in our hearts, uncertain as we face the riddle of death, oppressed at times by loneliness, yet yearning for company and fellowship, a prey to boredom and disgust. Mary shows the victory of hope over anguish, of fellowship over solitude, of peace over anxiety, of joy and beauty over boredom and disgust, of eternal vision over earthly perceptions, of life over death.” (cf Marialis Cultus, 57)
Mary offers us a firm eschatological assurance and hope that God is in charge, through His Son, in His Holy Spirit.
Our love of Mary and devotion to her “fits into the only worship that is rightly called Christian, because it takes its origin and effectiveness from Jesus Christ, finds its complete expression in Christ and leads us through Christ in the Holy Spirit to the Father.” (Marialis Cultus, Introduction)
“Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5) are the last recorded words of Mary in Scripture. It is her message yesterday, today and forever.   It is the hallmark of genuine spirituality, Christian behaviour and commitment to her son.
“Ask our Mother Mary, in whose heart we can find repose and peace, Mary who was full of the Holy Spirit, to nurture and foster the growth of the life of Jesus that is present in us by his Holy Spirit, so we can say that we not only belong to Jesus Christ and His Church but that we have become the Body of Christ because Christ lives in us and the love of Christ impels us to stay faithful as trustworthy stewards and disciples through all the competing pressures of life!”  (Bishop Peter Ingham )

Catholic Devotion for the Month of August – The Immaculate Heart of Mary

Catholic Devotion for the Month of August:  The Immaculate Heart of Mary

The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart.   Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions.  The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.   The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue.   Just as the Sacred Heart represents Christ’s love for mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the desire of the Blessed Virgin to bring all people to her Son.

This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions given to Lucy Dos Santos, oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, in her convent in Tuy, in Spain, in 1925 and 1926.   In the visions Our Lady asked for the practice of the Five First Saturdays to help make amends for the offenses committed against her heart by the blasphemies and ingratitude of men.   The practice parallels the devotion of the Nine First Fridays in honour of the Sacred Heart.

In the midst of the second world war Pope Pius XII put the whole world under the special protection of our Saviour’s Mother by consecrating it to her Immaculate Heart and in 1944 he decreed that in the future the whole Church should celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.   This is not a new devotion.   In the seventeenth century, St. John Eudes preached it together with that of the Sacred Heart;  in the nineteenth century, Pius VII and Pius IX allowed several churches to celebrate a feast of the Pure Heart of Mary.   Pius XII instituted today’s feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the whole Church, so as to obtain by her intercession “peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue” (Decree of May 4, 1944).   On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart.   Let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August.

By St Peter Canisius S.J.

See, O merciful God, what return
I, Your thankless servant, have made
for the innumerable favours
and the wonderful love You have shown me!
What wrongs I have done, what good left undone!
Wash away, I beg You, these faults and stains
with Your precious blood, most kind Redeemer,
and make up for my poverty by applying Your merits.
Give me the protection I need to amend my life.
I give and surrender myself wholly to You,
and offer You all I possess,
with the prayer that You bestow Your grace on me,
so that I may be able to devote and employ

and the strength of my body in Your holy service,
who are God blessed for ever and ever. Amen

The Wonders of the Holy Name – Fr Paul O’Sullivan, O.P. – “Revealing the Simplest Secret Ever of Holiness and Happiness.” Part Ten – 19 July

the wonders of the holy name-day ten-17 july

The Saints and the Holy Name contd.

Blessed Gonzalo de Amarante:  reached a very
eminent degree of sanctity by the frequent repetition
of the Holy Name.

The Blessed Giles of Santarem:  felt so much
love and delight in saying the Holy Name that he
was raised in the air in ecstasy.
Those who repeat frequently the Name of Jesus
feel a great peace in their souls “that peace which
the World cannot give”, which God alone gives,
a peace “that surpasses all understanding”.

St Leonard of Portmaurlce:  cherished a tender
devotion to the Name of Jesus and in his continual
missions taught the people who thronged to
listen to him the wonders of the Holy Name.
This he did with such love that tears flowed from
his eyes and from the eyes of all who heard him.
He begged them to put a card with this Divine
Name on their doors.   This was attended with the
happiest results for many were thus saved from
sickness and disasters of various kinds.
One, unfortunately, was prevented from doing
so as a Jew who was part-owner of the house in
which he lived sternly refused to have the Name
of Jesus placed on the door.   His fellow lodger then
decided that he would write it on his windows,
which he accordingly did.   Some days after a
fierce fire broke out in the building which destroyed
all the appartments belonging to the Jew while
the rooms belonging to his Christian neighbour in
no wise suffered from the conflagration.
This fact was made public and increased a
hundred fold the faith and trust in the Holy Name
of Our Saviour.   In fact the whole city of Ferrajo
was a witness of this extraordinary protection.

St Edmund:  had special devotion to the Name
of Jesus which Our Lord Himself taught him.
One day when he was in the country and separated
from his companions a beautiful child stood
by him and asked: “Edmund do you not know
me?”   Edmund replied that he did not.    Then
replied the child:  “Look at me and you will see
who I am.”   Edmund looked as he was bidden
and saw written on the Child’s forehead:  “Jesus
of Nazareth. King of the Jews” “Know now who
I am” said the child “every night make the sign
of the cross and say these. words: “Jesus of Nazareth
King of the Jews.”   “If you do so this
prayer will deliver you and all who say it from
sudden and unprovided-for deaths.”
Edmund faithfully did as Our Lord told him.
The devil once tried to prevent him and held his
hands so that he could not make the holy sign.
Edmund invoked the Name of Jesus and the devil
fled in terror leaving him unmolested for the
future.
Many people practise this easy devotion and so
save themselves from unhappy deaths.   Others
with their forefinger imprint with holy water on
their foreheads the four letters I. N. R. I. to signify
Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judeorum. the words
written by Pilate for the cross of Our Lord.
St Alphonsus earnestly recommends both these
devotions.

St Frances of Rome:  enjoyed the extraordinary
privilege of constantly seeing and speaking to her
Angel Guardian.   When she pronounced the Name
of Jesus the Angel was radiant with happiness and
bent down in loving adoration.
Sometimes the devil dared to appear to her
seeking to frighten her and do her harm.   But
when she pronounced the Holy Name he was filled
with rage and hatred and fled in terror from her
presence.

St Jane of Chantal:  that most lovable friend
of St. Francis de Sales, had many beautiful devotions
taught her by this holy Doctor who acted
as her spiritual adviser for many years.   She so
loved the Name of Jesus that she actually wrote
it with a hot iron on her breast.

Blessed Henry Suso – had done the same with a pointed steel
rod.

We may not aspire to this holy daring, we may
with reason lack the courage of inscribing the
Holy Name on our breasts.   This needs a special
inspiration from God.   But we may follow the
example of another dear St B. Catherine of
Racconigi, a daughter of St. Dominic, who repeated
frequently and lovingly the Name of Jesus so
that after her death the Name of Jesus was found
engraved in letters of gold on her heart.   We
all can do as she did and thus the Name of Jesus
will be emblazoned on our souls for all Eternity
in sight of the Saints and Angels in Heaven.

St Gemma Galganl:   Almost in our own days this
dear girl Saint also had the privilege of frequent
and intimate converse with her Angel Guardian.
Sometimes the Angel and Gemma entered into a
holy contest as to which of them could say more
lovingly the Name of Jesus.

The Saints and the Holy Name contd

St Francis of Asslsi:  that burning Seraph of
love found his delights in repeating the loved Name
of Jesus.   St. Bonaventure says that his face lit
up with joy and his voice showed by its tender
accents how much he loved to invoke this all-Holy
Name.
No ‘wonder then that he received on his hands
and feet and side the marks of the Five Wounds
of Our Lord, a reward of his burning love.

St Ignatius of Loyola:  was second to none in
his love for the Holy Name.   He gave to his great
Order not his own name but called it the Society
of Jesus.   This Divine Name has been, as it
were a shield and defence of the · Order against
its enemies and a guarantee of the holiness and
sanctity of its members.   Glorious, indeed is the
great Society of Jesus.  And now, our present Holy Father , too is a Jesuit.

St Francis de Sales:   has no hesitation in saying
that those who have the custom of repeating
the Holy Name frequently may feel certain of
dying a holy and happy death.
And, indeed, there can be no doubt of this
because every time we say Jesus we apply the
saving Blood of Jesus to our Souls, at the same
time we implore God, to do as He has promised,
granting us everything we ask in His Name.   All
who desire a holy death can secure it by repeating
the Name of Jesus.   Not only will this practice
obtain for us a holy death but it will lessen
notably our time in Purgatory and may very possibly
deliver us altogether from that dreadful fire.
Many saints spent their last days repeating
constantly Jesus, Jesus.
ALL the doctors of the Church agree in telling
us that the devil reserves his fiercest temptations
for our last moments and then he fills the minds
of the dying person with doubts, fears and
dreadful temptations in the hope of, at last,
carrying the unfortunate . soul to Hell.   Happy
those who in life have made sure of acquiring
the habit of calling on the Name of Jesus.
Facts like these we have just mentioned are to
be found in the 1ives of all the great servants of
God who became saints and reached the highest
degrees of sanctity by this simple and easy
means.
St Vincent Ferrer:  one of the most famous
preachers that the World has ever seen, converted
the most abandoned criminals and transformed
them into the most fervent Christians.   He converted
80000 Jews, and 70000 Moors, a prodigy
we read of in the life of no other saint.   He
worked an incredible number of miracles.  Three
miracles are demanded by the Church for the
canonisation of the saints, whereas in the bull of
canonisation of St. Vincent 873 are mentioned.
This great saint burned with love for the Name
of Jesus and with this Divine Name worked
extraordinary wonders. .
We, therefore, sinful as we are, can with this
Omnipotent Name obtain every favour and every
grace.   The weakest mortals become strong, the
most afflicted find in it consolation and joy.
Who then can be so foolish or negligent as not
to acquire the habit of repeating Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
constantly.   It robs us of no time, presents no
difficulty and is an infallible remedy for every evil.

The Saints and the Holy Name

St Augustine:
This great Doctor of the Church,
found his delights in repeating the Holy Name.
He himself tells us that he found much pleasure
in books which made frequent mention of this all-consoling
Name.
St Bernard – felt a wonderful joy and consolation
in repeating the Name of Jesus.   He felt it, as he
says, like honey in his mouth and a delicious
peace in his heart.   We, too, shall feel immense
consolation and peace steal into our souls if we
imitate St. Bernard and repeat frequently this
Holy Name.
St Dominic – spent his days preaching
and discussing with the heretics.   He always went on
foot from place to place as well in the oppressive
heats of the summer as in the cold and rain of
winter.   The Albigensian heretics whom he tried to
convert were more like demons let loose from Hell
than mortal men.   Their doctrine was infamous
and their crimes enormous.   Yet, as another St.
Paul, he converted 100.000 of these wicked men so
that many of them became eminent for sanctity.
Wearied at night with his labours he asked only
for one reward which was to pass the night before
the Blessed Sacrament pouring out his soul in love
for Jesus.   When his poor body could resist no
longer he leaned his head against the Altar and
rested a little, after which he began once more his
intimate converse with Jesus.   In the morning he
celebrated Mass with the ardour of a seraph so that
at times his body was raised in the air in an
ecstasy of love.   The Name of Jesus filled his soul
with joy and delight.
Blessed Jordan of Saxony –  who succeeded St
Dominic as Master General of the Order, was a
preacher of great renown.   His words went straight
to the heart of his hearers above all when he spoke
to them of Jesus.   Learned professors of the University cities came
with delight to hear him and so many of them be~
came Dominican friars that others feared to come,
lest they, too, should be induced to join his Order.
So many were drawn by his irresistible eloquence
that when his visit to a city was announced the Prior
of the convent bought at once a great quantity of
white cloth to make habits for those who were
sure to seek entrance to the Order.   Blessed Jordan
himself received one thousand postulants to the
habit among whom were the most eminent professors
of the European Universities.

Thought for the day – 17 July – THE SIXTEEN CARMELITE MARTYRS OF COMPIEGNE

Thought for the day – THE SIXTEEN CARMELITE MARTYRS OF  COMPIEGNE

The French Revolution reveals the titanic struggle between good and evil.   During the terror, over 40,000 Frenchmen were executed just for holding fast to the Catholic Faith and objecting to the worst excesses of the Committee of Public Safety.   The blood lost in the years of 1792-1794 staggers the imagination even in the retelling and the campaign against the Church was as diabolical as it was cruel.

Contemplative religious communities had been among the first targets of the fury of the French Revolution against the Catholic Church.   Less than a year from May 1789 when the Revolution began with the meeting of the Estates-General, these communities had been required by law to disband.   But many of them continued in being, in hiding. Among these were the community of the Carmelite nuns of Compiegne, in northeastern France not far from Paris – the fifty-third convent in France of the Carmelite sisters who followed the reform of  St. Teresa of Avila, founded in 1641, noted throughout its history for fidelity and fervour.   Their convent was raided in August 1790, all the property of the sisters was seized by the government and they were forced to discard their habits and leave their house.   They divided into four groups which found lodging in four different houses all near the same church in Compiegne and for several years they were to a large extent able to continue their religious life in secret.   But the intensified surveillance and searches of the “Great Terror” revealed their secret and in June 1794 most of them were arrested and imprisoned.

They had expected this; indeed, they had prayed for it.   At some time during the summer of 1792, very likely just after the events of August 10 of that year that marked the descent into the true deeps of the Revolution, their prioress, Madeleine Lidoine, whose name in religion was Teresa in honour of the founder of their order, by all accounts a charming  perceptive and highly intelligent woman, had foreseen much of what was to come.   At Easter of 1792, she told her community that, while looking through the archives she had found the account of a dream a Carmelite had in 1693.   In that dream, the Sister saw the whole Community, with the exception of 2 or 3 Sisters, in glory and called to follow the Lamb. In the mind of the Prioress, this mean martyrdom and might well be a prophetic announcement of their fate.

Mother Teresa had said to her sisters: “Having meditated much on this subject, I have thought of making an act of consecration by which the Community would offer itself as a sacrifice to appease the anger of God, so that the divine peace of His Dear Son would be brought into the world, returned to the Church and the state.”   The sisters discussed her proposal and all agreed to it but the two oldest, who were hesitant.   But when the news of the September massacres came, mingling glorious martyrdom with apostasy, these two sisters made their choice, joining their commitment to that of the rest of the community.   All made their offering; it was to be accepted.

After their lodgings were invaded again in June, their devotional objects shattered and their tabernacle trampled underfoot by a Revolutionary who told them that their place of worship should be transformed into a dog kennel, the Carmelite sisters were taken to the Conciergerie prison, where so many of the leading victims of the guillotine had been held during their last days on earth.   There they composed a canticle for their martyrdom, to be sung to the familiar tune of the Marseillaise.   The original still exists, written in pencil and given to one of their fellow prisoners, a lay woman who survived.

On July 17 the sixteen sisters were brought before Fouquier-Tinville.   All cases were now being disposed of within twenty-four hours as Robespierre had wished;  theirs was no exception.   They were charged with having received arms for the émigrés; their prioress, Sister Teresa, answered by holding up a crucifix. “Here are the only arms that we have ever had in our house.”   They were charged with possessing an altar-cloth with designs honouring the old monarchy (perhaps the fleur-de-lis) and were asked  to deny any attachment to the royal family.   Sister Teresa responded: “If that is a crime, we are all guilty of it; you can never tear out of our hearts the attachment for Louis XVI and his family. Your laws cannot prohibit feeling; they cannot extend their empire to the affections of the soul; God alone has the right to judge them.”   They were charged with corresponding with priests forced to leave the country because they would not take the constitutional oath; they freely admitted this.   Finally they were charged with the catch–all indictment by which any serious Catholic in France could be guillotined during the Terror: “fanaticism.”   Sister Henriette, who had been Gabrielle de Croissy, challenged Fouguier-Tinvile to his face:  “Citizen, it is your duty to respond to the request of one condemned;  I call upon you to answer us and to tell us just what you mean by the word ‘fanatic.’”   “I mean,” snapped the Public Prosecutor of the Terror, “your attachment to your childish beliefs and your silly religious practices.”   “Let us rejoice, my dear Mother and Sisters, in the joy of the Lord,” said Sister Henriette, “that we shall die for our holy religion, our faith, our confidence in the Holy Roman Catholic Church.”

Give over our hearts to joy, the day of glory has arrived.
Far from us all weakness, seeing the standard come;
We prepare for the victory, we all march to the true conquest,
Under the flag of the dying God we run, we all seek the glory;
Rekindle our ardour, our bodies are the Lord’s,
We climb, we climb the scaffold and give ourselves back to the Victor.

O happiness ever desired for Catholics of France,
To follow the wondrous road
Already marked out so often by the martyrs toward their suffering,
After Jesus with the King, we show our faith to Christians,
We adore a God of justice; as the fervent priest, the constant faithful,
Seal, seal with all their blood faith in the dying God….

Holy Virgin, our model, August queen of martyrs, deign to strengthen our zeal
And purify our desires, protect France even yet, help; us mount to Heaven,
make us feel even in these places, the effects of your power. Sustain your children,
Submissive, obedient, dying, dying with Jesus and in our King believing.

While in prison, they asked and were granted permission to wash their clothes.   As they had only one set of lay clothes, they put on their religious habit and set to the task. Providentially, the revolutionaries picked that “wash day” for their transfer to Paris.   As their clothes were soaking wet, the Carmelites left for Paris wearing their “outlawed” religious habit.   They celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in prison, wondering whether they would die that day.

It was only the next day they went to the guillotine.   The journey in the carts took more than an hour.   All the way the Carmelite sisters sang: the “Miserere,” “Salve Regina,” and “Te Deum.”   Beholding them, a total silence fell on the raucous, brutal crowd, most of them cheapened and hardened by day after day of the spectacle of public slaughter.   At the foot of the towering killing machine, their eyes raised to Heaven, the sisters sang “Veni Creator Spiritus.”   One by one, they renewed their religious vows.   They pardoned their executioners.   One observer cried out: “Look at them and see if they do not have the air of angels!   By my faith, if these women did not all go straight to Paradise, then no one is there!”

Sister Teresa, their prioress, requested and obtained permission to go last under the knife.   The youngest, Sister Constance, went first.   She climbed the steps of the guillotine “With the air of a queen going to receive her crown,” singing Laudate Dominum omnes gentes, “all peoples praise the Lord.”   She placed her head in the position for death without allowing the executioner to touch her.   Each sister followed her example, those remaining singing likewise with each, until only the prioress was left, holding in her hand a small figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary.   The killing of each martyr required about two minutes.   It was about eight o’clock in the evening, still bright at midsummer. During the whole time the profound silence of the crowd about the guillotine endured unbroken.

Two years before when the horror began, the Carmelite community at Compiegne had offered itself as a holocaust, that peace might be restored to France and the Church.   The return of full peace was still twenty-one years in the future.   But the Reign of Terror had only ten days left to run.   Years of war, oppression and persecution were yet to come but the mass official killing in the public squares of Paris was about to end.

The Cross had vanquished the guillotine.

These sixteen holy Carmelite nuns have all been beatified by our Holy Father, the Pope, (Pope St. Pius X, 27 May 1906) which is the last step before canonisation.    Blessed Carmelites of Compiegne, pray for us!
