Our Morning Offering – 1 June – Daily Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Our Morning Offering – 1 June – The Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – Monday of the Ninth week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Daily Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Prayers to the Sacred Heart
1936 – 15th Edition, Dublin

O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
filled with infinite love,
broken by our ingratitude
and pierced by our sins,
yet loving us still,
accept the Consecration
we make to Thee,
of all that we are
and all that we have.
Take every faculty
of our souls and bodies,
only day by day
draw us, nearer and nearer
to Thy Sacred Heart,
and there, as we shall hear the lesson,
teach us Thy Holy Way.
Amen

“There are some who make a spiritual communion everyday …
If we are deprived of Sacramental Communion,
let us replace it, as far as we can, by spiritual communion,
which we can make every moment;
for we ought to have always, a burning desire to receive the good God.
Communion is to the soul, like blowing a fire that is beginning to go out
but that has still plenty of hot embers;
we blow and the fire burns again.
After the reception of the Sacraments,
when we feel ourselves slacken in the love of God,
let us have recourse at once, to spiritual communion.

Sunday Reflection – 19 April – The 20th Divine Mercy Sunday! – The Blessed Sacrament is the Throne of Mercy

Sunday Reflection – 19 April – Low Sunday the Octave Day of Easter and the 20th Divine Mercy Sunday

The Blessed Sacrament is the Throne of Mercy, Jesus told Sister Faustina.

“O Blessed Host,
in Whom is contained the fountain of living water
which springs from infinite mercy for us
and especially for poor sinners.”

St Faustina Kowalska (1905–1938)

o blessed host in whom is contained the fountain - st faustina - 19 april 2020 div mercy sunday

The Eucharist is central to devotion to The Divine Mercy and many of the elements of the devotion are essentially Eucharistic–especially the image, the chaplet and the Feast of Mercy.   The image, with its red and pale rays, presents the Eucharistic Lord Jesus, whose Heart has been pierced and now pours forth blood and water as a fountain of mercy for us.   It is the image of God’s sacrificial gift of mercy made present in every Mass.

Several times in her Diary, Blessed Faustina writes of seeing the red and pale rays coming, not from the image but from the Sacred Host and once, as the Priest exposed the Blessed Sacrament, she saw the rays from the image pierce the Host and spread out from it all over the world (see 441).   So too, with the eyes of faith, we should see in every Host the merciful Saviour pouring Himself out as a fountain of mercy for us.

The concept of the Eucharist as a fountain of grace and mercy is not only found in the Diary but also in Church teaching  . The Church clearly teaches that all the other Sacraments are directed towards the Eucharist and draw their power from it.

In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (#10), for example, we read:  “Especially from the Eucharist, grace is poured forth upon us as from a fountain.” And, in a note in the Catechism of the Council of Trent, pastors are urged to “compare the Eucharist to a fountain and the other Sacraments to rivulets. For the Holy Eucharist is truly and necessarily the fountain of all graces, containing, as it does, after an admirable manner, the fountain itself of celestial gifts and graces, the Author of all the Sacraments, Christ our Lord, from whom, as from its source, is derived whatever of goodness and perfection the other Sacraments possess.”

No wonder, then, that Saint Faustina was so devoted to the Eucharist and wrote so powerfully about it in her Diary:

“O what awesome mysteries take place during Mass! … One day we will know what God is doing for us in each Mass and what sort of gift He is preparing in it for us. Only His divine love could permit that such a gift be provided for us … this fountain of life gushing forth with such sweetness and power” (914) …

“All the good that is in me is due to Holy Communion (1392) … Herein lies the whole secret of my sanctity (1489) … one thing alone sustains me and that is Holy Communion.   From it I draw all my strength, in it is all my comfort … Jesus concealed in the Host, is everything to me … I would not know how to give glory to God, if I did not have the Eucharist in my heart” (1037) …

“O living Host, my one and only strength, fountain of love and mercy, embrace the whole world, fortify faint souls. Oh, blessed be the instant and the moment when Jesus left us His most merciful Heart!” (223).

if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” … John 20:23john-20-23-peace-be-with-you-div-mercy-sun-28-april-2019 and 19 april 2020

REFLECTION – “Jesus entrusted to [the fearful, astounded disciples] the gift of “forgiving sins”, a gift that flows from the wounds in His hands, His feet, and especially from His pierced side.   From there a wave of mercy is poured out over all humanity.
Let us relive this moment with great spiritual intensity.   Today the Lord also shows us His glorious wounds and His Heart, an inexhaustible source of light and truth, of love and forgiveness.   The Heart of Christ! His “Sacred Heart” has given men everything- redemption, salvation, sanctification.…
Through the mystery of this wounded heart, the restorative tide of God’s merciful love continues to spread over the men and women of our time.   Here alone, can those who long for true and lasting happiness, find its secret.   “Jesus, I trust in You.”   This prayer, dear to so many of the faithful, clearly expresses the attitude with which we too would like to abandon ourselves trustfully into your hands, O Lord, our only Saviour.
You are burning with the desire to be loved, O Jesus and those in tune with the sentiments of your Heart learn how to build the new civilisation of love.   A simple act of abandonment is enough to overcome the barriers of darkness and sorrow, of doubt and desperation.  The rays of Your divine mercy restore hope, in a special way, to those who feel overwhelmed by the burden of sin.” … St John Paul II (1920-2005) Homily for Divine Mercy Sunday, 22 April 2001the heart of christ his sacred heart - st john paul 19 april 2020

PRAYER – Almighty Father, grant we pray that with Mary’s help, Mater Misericordiae, Mother of Jesus who is the incarnation of Divine Mercy, that we become renewed in the Spirit, in order to co-operate in the work of peace which You are accomplishing in the world and which is not just talk but which is actualised, in the countless gestures of charity by all his sons and daughters.   Grant we pray, that we taste the beauty of the encounter with the Risen Lord and draw from the source of His merciful love, to be apostles of His peace.   Through Christ, Redeemer and Merciful Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God for always and forever, amen.mary mother of mercy pray for us 19 april 2020

Morning Offering to the Sacred Heart
(Treasury of the Sacred Heart 1950)

Everyday of my life belongs to You,
O my God
and every action of my life
should be performed with the pure intention
of honouring You alone.
From this moment, I offer them
to Your Sacred Heart
and by this offering,
I consecrate them without reserve
to Your glory.
What a motive for performing
all my actions with all possible perfection!
Do not permit them, O my divine Saviour,
to be sullied by any motives unworthy of
Your Sacred Heart.
I renounce all that could lessen
the merit of my offering.
I renounce all vanity,

that I may commence, continue
and end this day in Your grace
and solely from the pure motive
of pleasing and honouring You.

Thought for the Day – 29 November – “You are in me and I in you.”

Thought for the Day – 29 November – The Memorial of Blessed Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos SJ (1711-1735) – First apostle of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain.

“On that day you will realise that I am in my Father
and you are in me and I in you.”

John 14:20john 14 20 on that day you will realise that I am in my father and you are in me and I in you -29 nov 2019.jpg

Today’s young Saint and Mystic, Blessed Bernardo’s devotion led him to the most exquisite union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus … the spiritual marriage.   Yes.   It is no less strange however, that the Word, left His Father, to become one with man, to become Bread from Heaven.

I read someplace that Bl Bernardo’s intercession is especially helpful to those who struggle with the vice of impurity.   I think Bernardo’s devotion to the Sacred Heart – the complete surrender of all his affections – is an antidote to all impurity.   The grace of espousal seems to me, to be similar to the consummate love of Jesus in the Eucharist for us, whereby He gives us His body, blood, soul and divinity at every Communion.   Isn’t it like that?   Isn’t that total union what we are called to?   At every Communion – even when I feel nothing, see nothing, hear nothing – it seems especially then, that faith supplies.

I never had experiences such as those Bl Bernardo participated in – I’m just grateful to be able to be recollected after each Communion and sometimes, to receive immense consolation too.    Knowing He is there and I am with Him.   I like the way Bl Bernardo put it:   “I see that everything in my heart is moving towards God, drawn like iron to a magnet.   It desires only God, searches only for God and longs only for God….” For Bernardo, that was his constant state – and he remained faithful to the graces he received.   For me, perhaps this desire is only imperfectly experienced in the thanksgiving after Communion.   Which is why I never want to waste those moments of recollection.

“Always holding my right hand, the Lord had me occupy the empty throne, then He fitted on my finger a gold ring…. “May this ring be an earnest of our love.   You are Mine and I am yours.   You may call yourself and sign Bernardo de Jesus, thus, as I said to my spouse, Santa Teresa, you are Bernardo de Jesus and I am Jesus de Bernardo.   My honour is yours, your honor is Mine.   Consider My glory that of your Spouse, I will consider yours, that of My spouse.   All Mine is yours and all yours is Mine.   What I am by nature you share by grace.   You and I are one!” – The Visions of Bernard Francis De Hoyos, S.J. by Henri Bechard, S.J.

In the ascetic-mystical life of the saints, God Himself purifies the soul of disordered passions in and through purifying trials and temptations.   Thus proving true Christ’s words, ‘what is impossible for man is possible for God.’   Blessed Bernardo was no exception.

As Catholics, we are not at all surprised by the ‘mystical marriage of today’s young Saint with Jesus’.   However, it seems the rest are prone to think this an unusual and strange occurrence and regard it as an aberration, so please if you search Blessed Bernardo you might be horrified at some nasty statements – don’t be – you know the better part!

Thought for the Day – 19 November – Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Thought for the Day – 19 November – The Memorial of St Matilda/Mechtilde of Hackeborn (c 1241-1298)

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Matilda and Gertrude of Helfta/the Great, became ardent devotees and promoters of Jesus’ heart after it was the subject of many of their visions.   The idea of hearing the heartbeat of God was very important to medieval saints, who nurtured devotion to the Sacred Heart.   Women such as Saint Matilda and Saint Gertrude perceived Jesus’ heart as the breast of a mother. Just as a mother gives milk to nourish her child, so Jesus in the Eucharist gives us His life blood.

In one vision, Mechtilde reported that Jesus said, “In the morning let your first act be to greet My Heart and to offer Me your own.   Whoever, breathes a sigh toward Me, draws Me to himself.”in the morning let your first act be - jesus to st matilda of hackeborn 19 nov 2019.jpg

One of the visions recounted by Mechtilde states that Jesus having appeared to her, commanded her to love Him ardently and to honour His Sacred Heart in the Blessed Sacrament as much as possible.   He gave her His Sacred Heart as a pledge of His love, as a place of refuge during her life and as her consolation at the hour of her death.   From this time Mechtilde had an extraordinary devotion to the Sacred Heart and she received such great graces from It, that she was accustomed to say, that if she had to write down all the favours and all the blessings which she had received by means of this devotion, a large book would not contain them.

In another, Jesus Himself recommended the Gospel.   Opening to her, the wound of His most gentle heart, He said to her:  “Consider how great is my love – if you want to know it well, you will not find it expressed more clearly anywhere, than in the Gospel.   No-one has ever expressed stronger or more tender feelings than these – As my Father has loved me, so have I loved you (John 15:9)”.

Her accounts of these visions were later compiled in the Liber Specialis Gratiae – The Book of Special Grace.

Our Morning Offering – 18 November -Jesus, my True Friend

Our Morning Offering – 18 November – Monday of the Thirty Third week in Ordinary Time, Year C

Jesus, my True Friend
By St Claude de la Colombiere S.J. (1641-1682)

You always listen kindly to me.
You have the secret to soften my troubles
and to renew my hope without ceasing.
All alone, You know the depths of my heart.
As my faithful friend,
You are my strong support,
” He who finds You found his Treasury ”.
Always and everywhere, You are with me.
In Your immense tenderness,
You come to my heart
to make Your home.
Reveal the wonder of Your Divine Friendship
to the desperate,
to all overwhelmed with suffering.
Yes, I am so convinced
that You watch over those who hope in You
and that we cannot lose anything
when we wait for You, in all things.
I resolve to live,
now and in the future
without any worry.
For I will discharge all my worries
on You, since You never desert those
who trust, in the love of Your Heart
Amen

Our Morning Offering – 25 October – Friday of the Twenty Ninth week in Ordinary Time, Year C

O Sacred Heart of Jesus
By St John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

O Sacred Heart of Jesus,
living and quickening source of eternal life,
infinite treasure of the Divinity
and burning furnace of divine love.
You are my refuge and my sanctuary,
O my amiable Saviour.
Consume my heart with that burning fire
with which Your Heart is ever inflamed.
Pour down on my soul
those graces which flow from Your love
and let my heart be so united with Yours,
that our wills may be one
and mine in all things,
be conformed to Yours.
May Your divine will
be equally the standard
and rule of all my desires
and of all my actions.

Our Morning Offering – 10 October – Thursday of the Twenty Seventh week in Ordinary Time, Year C and the Memorial of Blessed Angela Truszkowska (1825-1899)

Unite Me to Your Sacred Heart
By Blessed Angela Truszkowska (1825-1899)

My Lord, You bid us to suffer,
therefore, my poor soul desires it.
I want to suffer, O Jesus
but with You,
to suffer but for the love of You,
to suffer but in silence and in solitude,
so that no-one would know
that I suffer, only You,
so that only You would hear the groanings of my soul
and only You would see my tears.
Ah! Teach me, O Lord,
to suffer in that way,
teach me to suffer without seeking any consolation,
to suffer without craving the sympathy of creatures,
to suffer without even
expecting the eternal joys of heaven.
Teach me to suffer,
not because suffering is the source of merit and glory
but because it unites us to You
and makes our hearts
like unto your Sacred Heart.
Amen

Thought for the Day – 19 August – The Memorial of St John Eudes Orat. (1601-1680) “Apostle of Two Hearts”

St John Eudes captured the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary by honouring them in the liturgy.   Thanks to this saint, Holy Cross priests have as their patron Jesus’ Sacred Heart and Notre Dame has a Basilica dedicated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

In fact, even though John was Canonised a saint after the Basilica was constructed, he is depicted there in a stained glass window leading people in devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.john_eudes__basilica_.jpg

John’s spirituality focused on the love of Jesus and Mary, symbolised in their sacred hearts.   He began a feast day for people to honour the heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, these feast days spread quickly and were taken up around the Church.   While John was not the first to be devoted to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, he was the first to capture this devotion in the liturgy, which gave the Church a way to participate and spread it.

He died after giving a parish mission in his old age that left him sick and weak—he preached outdoors, in the winter, every day for nine weeks and never recovered.   He died on this date in 1680.

John Eudes is probably best known for the central theme of his writings – Jesus as the source of holiness and Mary as the model of the Christian life.   His devotion to the Sacred Heart and to the Immaculate Heart led Pope Pius XI to declare him the father of the liturgical cult of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

He believed in the unity of the hearts of Jesus and Mary and wrote:
”You must never separate what God has so perfectly united.   So closely are Jesus and Mary bound up with each other that whoever beholds Jesus, sees Mary, whoever loves Jesus, loves Mary, whoever has devotion to Jesus, has devotion to Mary.”

August – The Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

August – The Month of the Immaculate Heart of MaryAUG DEVOTION THE IMMACULATE HEART 1 AUG 2019

The Catholic Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.   The Immaculate Heart is often venerated together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the devotion we celebrate in June) and, with good reason.   Just as the Sacred Heart represents Christ’s love for mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the desire of the Blessed Virgin to bring all people to her Son.

There is no better example of the Christian life than that offered by Mary.   We do not worship Mary or place her above Christ, but we come to Christ through Mary, as Christ came to us through her.

Thoughts for the Day – 28 June = Pray for our Priests!

Thoughts for the Day – 28 June – Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests

St Pope Gregory the Great (540-604)
Father & Doctor

(Forty Gospel Homilies, 17)

“We must all of us strive zealously to make known to the church both the dreadfulness of the coming judgement and the kingdom of heaven’s delight.   Those who are not in a position to address a large assembly, should instruct individuals, offering instruction in personal talks, they should try to serve those around them through simple encouragement.

You who are pastors, consider that you are pasturing God’s flock.   We often see a block of salt put out for animals to lick for their well-being.   Priests, among their people, should be like blocks of salt.   They should counsel everyone in their flocks, in such a way, that all those with whom they come in contact may be seasoned with eternal life, as if they had been sprinkled with salt.   We who preach, are not the salt of the earth, unless we season the hearts of those, who listen to us.   We are really preaching to others, if we ourselves do what we say, if we are pierced with God’s love, if, since we cannot avoid sin, our tears wash away the stains on our life, that come with each new day.   We truly feel remorse, when we take to heart, the lives of our forebears in the faith, so that we are diminished in our own eyes.   Then do we truly feel remorse, when we attentively examine God’s teachings and adopt for our own use, what those we revere themselves used for theirs.

And while we are moved to remorse on our own account, let us also take responsibility for the lives of those entrusted to our care.   Our own bitter compunction should not divert us from concern for our neighbour.   What good to love and strive to do good for our neighbour and abandon ourselves?   We must realise that our passion for justice in the face of another’s evil, must never cause us to lose the virtue of gentleness.

Priests must not be quick-tempered or rash, they must, instead, be temperate and thoughtful.   We must support those we challenge and challenge those we support.   If we neglect this, our work will lack either courage or gentleness.   What shall we call the human soul but the food of the Lord?   It is created, to become nothing less, than Christ’s body and to bring about growth in the eternal church.

We priests are to season this food.   Cease to pray, cease to teach and the salt loses its taste.”

Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

OPENING OF THE YEAR FOR PRIESTS
ON THE 150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH
OF SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY
the holy Curé of Ars (1786-1859) Patron of Priests

HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI

Saint Peter’s Basilica
Friday, 19 June 2009

“To be “in” Jesus Christ is already to be seated in heaven.   The very core of Christianity is expressed in the heart of Jesus;  in Christ the revolutionary “newness” of the Gospel is completely revealed and given to us – the Love that saves us and even now makes us live in the eternity of God.   As the Evangelist John writes:  “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (3:16).   God’s heart calls to our hearts, inviting us to come out of ourselves, to forsake our human certainties, to trust in Him and, by following His example, to make ourselves a gift of unbounded love.

While it is true that Jesus’ invitation to “abide in my love” (cf. Jn 15:9) is addressed to all the baptised, on this feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the day of prayer for the sanctification of priests, this invitation resounds all the more powerfully for us priests.   It does so in a special way this evening, at the solemn inauguration of the Year for Priests which I have proclaimed to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of the saintly Curé of Ars.   A lovely and touching saying of his, quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, comes immediately to mind:  “the priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus” (n. 1589).   How can we fail to be moved when we recall that the gift of our priestly ministry flows directly from this heart?   How can we forget that we priests were consecrated to serve, humbly yet authoritatively, the common priesthood of the faithful? Ours is an mission which is indispensable for the Church and for the world, a mission which calls for complete fidelity to Christ and constant union with Him. To abide in His love entails constantly striving for holiness, as did Saint John Mary Vianney.

…To be completely enthralled by Christ!  This was the goal of the entire life of Saint Paul, … this was the goal of the entire ministry of the Curé of Ars, whom we shall invoke in particular during this Year for Priests – may it also be the primary goal for each and every one of us.   Certainly, to be ministers at the service of the Gospel, study and careful, ongoing pastoral and theological formation are useful and necessary but even more necessary is that “knowledge of love” which can only be learned in a “heart to heart” encounter with Christ  . For it is He who calls us to break the bread of His love, to forgive sins and to guide the flock in His name.    And, for that reason, we must never step back from the source of love which is His Heart, pierced on the Cross.”the priesthood is the love - st john vianney - 28 june 2019 sacred heart
