Quote/s of the Day – 28 July

“Jesus Christ is very little known by those
who claim to be His friends.
We observe them seeking in Him,
not His sorrows but their own consolation.”

QUOTE ST JOHN OF THE CROSS 21 JAN

“The road is narrow.
He who wishes to travel it more easily,
must cast off all things and use the cross as his cane.
In other words, he must be truly resolved.
to suffer willingly
for the love of God in all things.”

Our Morning Offering – 28 July

Wash Me With Your Precious Blood
By St Peter Canisius S.J.

See, O merciful God, what return
I, Your thankless servant, have made
for the innumerable favours
and the wonderful love You have shown me!
What wrongs I have done, what good left undone!
Wash away, I beg You, these faults and stains
with Your precious blood, most kind Redeemer,
and make up for my poverty by applying Your merits.
Give me the protection I need to amend my life.
I give and surrender myself wholly to You,
and offer You all I possess,
with the prayer that You bestow Your grace on me,
so that I may be able to devote and employ
all the thinking power of my mind
and the strength of my body in Your holy service,
who are God blessed for ever and ever. Amen

Saint of the Day – 28 July – St Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception

Saint of the Day – 28 July – St Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception – Religious Franciscan Nun – born as Anna Muttathupadathu (19 August 1910 at Kudamalloor, Kerala, India –  28 July 1946 at Bharananganam, India, of natural causes).   Her remains are  buried in the chapel connected with the cemetery of Saint Mary’s church, Bharananganam, India, which has become an important place of pilgrimage.   She was Canonised on Sunday 12 October 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI.   She is the first canonised saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church of the Saint Thomas Christian community.   Patronages –  against bodily ills, against the death of parents of sick people.

st-alphonsa

Blessed ALPHONSA OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION was born in Kudamalur, the Arpookara region, in the diocese of Changanacherry, India, on the 19th of August 1910, of the ancient and noble family of Muttathupadathu.

From her birth, the life of the Blessed was marked by the cross, which would be progressively revealed to her as the royal way to conform herself to Christ.   Her mother, Maria Puthukari, gave birth to her prematurely, in her eight month of pregnancy, as a result of a fright she received when, during the sleep, a snake wrapped itself around her waist.   Eight days later, the 28 of August, the child was baptised according to the Syro-Malabar rite by the Fr Joseph Chackalayil and she received the name Annakutty, a diminutive of Anne.   She was the last of five children.   Her mother died three months later.   Annakutty passed her early infancy in the home of her grandparents in Elumparambil.   There she lived a particularly happy time because of her human and Christian formation, during which the first seeds of a vocation flowered.   Her grand-mother, a pious and charitable woman, communicated the joy of the faith, love for prayer and a surge of charity towards the poor to her.   At five years of age the child already knew how to lead, with a totally childish enthusiasm, the evening prayer of the family gathered, in accordance with the Syro-Malabar custom, in the “prayer room”.

Annakutty received the Eucharistic bread for the first time on the 11 of November 1917. She used to say to her friends:  “Do you know why I am so particularly happy today? It is because I have Jesus in my heart!“.   In a letter to her spiritual father, on the 30 of November 1943, she confided the following:  “Already from the age of seven I was no longer mine.   I was totally dedicated to my divine Spouse.   Your reverence knows it well“.

In the same year of 1917 she began to attend the elementary school of Thonnankuzhy, where she also established a sincere friendship with the Hindu children.   When the first school cycle ended in 1920, the time had come to transfer to Muttuchira, to the house of her aunt Anna Murickal, to whom her mother, before she died, had entrusted her as her adoptive mother.   Her aunt was a severe and demanding woman, at times despotic and violent in demanding obedience from Annakutty in her every minimal disposition or desire.   Assiduous in her religious practice, she accompanied her niece but did not share the young girl’s friendship with the Carmelites of the close-by Monastery or her long periods of prayer at the foot of the altar.   She was, in fact, determined to procure an advantageous marriage for Annakutty, obstructing the clear signs of her religious vocation.

The virtue of the Blessed was manifested in accepting this severe and rigid education as a path of humility and patience for the love of Christ and tenaciously resisted the reiterated attempts at engagement to which the aunt tried to oblige her.   Annakutty, in order to get out from under a commitment to marriage, reached the point of voluntarily causing herself a grave burn by putting her foot into a heap of burning embers.  My marriage was arranged when I was thirteen years old.   What had I to do to avoid it?   I prayed all that night… then an idea came tome.   If my body were a little disfigured no one would want me! … O, how I suffered!   I offered all for my great intention.

The proposal to defile her singular beauty did not fully succeed in freeing her from the attentions of suitors.   During the following years the Blessed had to defend her vocation, even during the year of probation when an attempt to give her in marriage, with the complicity of the Mistress of Formation herself, was made.  “O, the vocation which I received!   A gift of my good God!…. God saw the pain of my soul in those days.   God distanced the difficulties and established me in this religious state.st-alphonsa-of-bharanangan1

It was Fr James Muricken, her confessor, who directed her towards Franciscan spirituality and put her in contact with the Congregation of the Franciscan Clarists. Annakutty entered their college in Bharananganam in the diocese of Palai, to attend seventh class, as an intern student, on the 24th of May 1927.   The following year, on the 2nd of August 1928, Annakutty began her postulancy, taking the name of Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception in honour of St. Alphonsus Liguori, whose feast it was that day. She was clothed in the religious habit on the 19th of May 1930, during the first pastoral visit made to Bharananganam by the Bishop, Msgr. James Kalacherry.

The period 1930-1935 was characterised by grave illness and moral suffering.   She could teach the children in the school at Vakakkad only during the scholastic year 1932.   Then, because of her weakness, she carried out the duties of assistant-teacher and catechist in the parish.   She was engaged also as secretary, especially to write official letters because of her beautiful script.

The canonical novitiate was introduced into the Congregation of the Franciscan Clarists in 1934.   Though wishing to enter immediately, the Blessed was only admitted on the 12th of August 1935 because of her ill health.   About one week after the beginning of her novitiate, she had a haemorrhage from the nose and eyes and a profound organic wasting and purulent wounds on her legs.   The illness deteriorated, to such a point that the worst was feared.

Heaven came to the rescue of the holy novice.   During a novena to The Servant of God Fr Kuriakose Elia Chavara – a Carmelite who today is a Blessed—she was miraculously and instantaneously cured.

Having restarted her novitiate, she wrote the following proposals in her spiritual diary:  “I do not wish to act or speak according to my inclinations.   Every time I fail, I will do penance… I want to be careful never to reject anyone.   I will only speak sweet words to others.   I want to control my eyes with rigour.   I will ask pardon of the Lord for every little failure and I will atone for it through penance.   No matter what my sufferings may be, I will never complain and if I have to undergo any humiliation, I will seek refuge in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The 12th of August 1936, the feast of St Clare, the day of her perpetual profession, was a day of inexpressible spiritual joy.   She had realised her desire, guarded for a long time in her heart and confided to her sister Elizabeth when she was only 12 years old:  “Jesus is my only Spouse and none other.

Jesus, however, wished to lead His spouse to perfection through a life of suffering.   “I made my perpetual profession on the 12th of August 1936 and came here to Bharanganam on the following 14th.   From that time, it seems, I was entrusted with a part of the cross of Christ.   There are abundant occasions of suffering…  I have a great desire to suffer with joy.   It seems that my Spouse wishes to fulfil this desire.

Painful illnesses followed each other:  typhoid fever, double pneumonia, and, the most serious of all, a dramatic nervous shock, the result of a fright on seeing a thief during the night of the 18th of October 1940.   Her state of psychic incapacity lasted for about a year, during which she was unable to read or write.

In every situation, Sister Alphonsa always maintained a great reservation and charitable attitude towards the Sisters, silently undergoing her sufferings.   In 1945 she had a violent outbreak of illness.   A tumour, which had spread throughout her organs, transformed her final year of life into a continuous agony.   Gastroenteritis and liver problems caused violent convulsions and vomiting up to forty times a day:  I feel that the Lord has destined me to be an oblation, a sacrifice of suffering… I consider a day in which I have not suffered as a day lost to me.

With this attitude of a victim for the love of the Lord, happy until the final moment and with a smile of innocence always on her lips, Sister Alphonsa quietly and joyfully brought her earthly journey to a close in the convent of the Franciscan Clarists at Bharananganam at 12.30 on the 28th July 1946, leaving behind the memory of a Sister full of love and a saint.

Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception Muttathupadathu was proclaimed Blessed by Pope John Paul II in Kottayam, India on 8 February 1986.

“With today’s Canonisation, the Church in India presents its first Saint to the veneration of the faithful of the whole world.   Faithful from every part of the world have come together in a single act of thanksgiving to God in her name and in a sign of the great oriental and western traditions, Roman and Malabar, which Sr Alphonsa lived and harmonised in her saintly life. ”  (At the Canonisation Ceremony – Pope Benedict XVI-12 October 2008).

ANNOUNCING A NOVENA to ST DOMINIC for the Virtues of Faith, Purity, Charity and especially for all our Lapsed Catholic family and friends- Beginning 30 July

ANNOUNCING A NOVENA to ST DOMINIC
for the Virtues of Faith, Purity, Charity
and especially for all our Lapsed Catholic family and friends.

The Novena to St Dominic begins on Sunday 30 July.

We pray to Saint Dominic, to ask the great preacher against heresy
and the founder of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans)
to pray for us, that we may be granted the virtues that he embodied:
a desire to practice penance, through fasting and mortification;
purity of body and soul, in a world that values neither;
the theological virtue of faith, that we may live our lives,
in love of the Lord and in prayer;  and charity toward all men,
especially those who have fallen away from the True Faith
and those who have fallen into lives of sin.

St Dominic, please pray for us!

Novena In Honour of Saint John Marie Vianney

DAY TWO – We pray for COMPLETE TRUST IN GOD

DAY TWO - NOVENA TO ST JOHN VIANNEY - COMPLETE TRUST IN GOD - 27 JULY

Saint John Marie Baptiste Vianney,
what confidence the people had in your prayers!
You could not leave your old rectory or your humble church
without being surrounded by imploring souls,
who appealed to you as they would have appealed to Jesus Himself
during His earthly life.
And you, O good Saint, gave them hope by your words,
which were full of love for God.
You, who had always counted entirely on the heart of God,
obtain for me a deep filial trust in His Providence.
As the hope of divine goods fills my heart,
give me courage and help me to always obey the Commandments of God.
Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession.
Pray for me during this novena especially for …
(mention silently your special intentions).
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.

Thought for the Day – 27 July

Today is the feast of Blessed Rudolf Aquaviva S.J. (1550-1583), who laboured for four years at the court of the Muslim king at Agra, India, seeking converts to Christ.  The mission failed.  Shortly after, Bl Rudolf and four associates were martyred by a Hindu mob.  He wrote movingly of patient hope in the face of apparent failure:

“You know how I longed for this mission and how delighted I was when it was granted me. I have been able to do what I wished for—to bear witness to the name of Jesus Christ before the kings and rulers of this world.

We cannot speak out the truth for fear that if we go too far we endanger the life of King Akbar. So we neither die because they do not kill us and yet we do not live for our zeal wears us out. Or we live only by hope, though that is very uncertain whether it may not turn out rather evil than good. Ours is a very uncertain outlook as far as the King’s conversion goes.

Still, the Lord makes us realise that our labours are just as pleasing and acceptable to His divine majesty as if we were to obtain that for which we are striving, for God is a witness of inmost feelings and a searcher of the heart (see Wisdom 1:6). For day and night we are toiling at a work of great service to God, the planting of his faith in a barbarous nation at such peril of our lives.”

….For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond alll measure…2 Corinthians 4:17

We do NOT give up – ever, for the Lord is with us and blesses our zealous hearts!   Blessed Aquaviva please pray for us!

Our Morning Offering – 27 July

“O God, I love You and not because
I hope for heaven thereby.”
St Francis Xavier translated by Gerald Manley Hopkins

I love You, God, I love You—
Not out of hope for heaven for me
Nor fearing not to love and be
In the everlasting burning.
You, my Jesus, after me
Did reach Your arms out dying,
For my sake suffered nails and lance,
Mocked and marred countenance,
Sorrows passing number,
Sweat and care and cumber,
Yes and death, and this for me,
And You could see me sinning:
Then I, why should not I love You,
Jesu so much in love with me?
Not for heaven’s sake, not to be
Out of hell by loving You;
Not for any gains I see;
But just the way that You loved me
I do love and will love You.
What must I love You Lord, for then?
For being my king and God. Amen

I love you lord - st francis xavier

Saint of the Day – 27 July – St Pantaleon (Died c 305) Martyr

Saint of the Day – 27 July – St Pantaleon (Died c 305) – Martyr, Lay Physician, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.   He was Martyred in c 305.   Patronages – against consumption or tuberculosis, bachelors, doctors, physicians, midwives, torture victims.   A phial of his blood is preserved at Constantinople and is reported to become liquid and bubble on his feast day.   Some of his relics are enshrined at the church of Saint Denis in Paris, France and others at Lyons, France.

St Pantaleon

According to ltradition he was the son of a rich pagan, Eustorgius of Nicomedia and had been instructed in Christianity by his Christian mother, Eubula.   He became estranged from Christianity for a while as a young man.
He studied medicine and became physician to the Emperor Maximinianus.

He returned to the faith when he encountered a zealous priest, Hermolaus who by prudent exhortation awakened Pantaleon’s conscience to a sense of his guilt, and brought him back into the faith of the Church.   Henceforth he devoted himself ardently to the advancement of the spiritual and temporal welfare of his fellow citizens.  First of all he sought to convert his father, who was still a heathen and had the consolation to see him die a Christian.   As a physician, he was intent on healing his patients both by physical and by spiritual means.   Christians he confirmed in the practice and confession of the Faith” and the heathens he sought to convert.   Many suffering from incurable diseases were restored to health by his prayer and the invocation of the holy name of Jesus.   His presence was everywhere fraught with blessings and consolation.   Upon the death of his father he came into possession of a large fortune, which he divied amongst the poor and the sick.   Envious colleagues denounced him to the emperor during the Diocletian persecution.   The emperor wished to save him and sought to persuade him to apostasy.   Pantaleon, however, openly confessed his faith and as proof that Christ is the true God, he healed a paralytic.   Notwithstanding this, he was condemned to death by the emperor, who regarded the miracle as an exhibition of magic.

panteleon.3

Pantaleon’s flesh was first burned with torches; upon this Christ appeared to all in the form of Hermolaus to strengthen and heal Pantaleon.   The torches were extinguished.   Then a bath of liquid lead was prepared, Christ in the same form stepped into the cauldron with him, the fire went out and the lead became cold.   He was then thrown into the sea but the stone with which he was loaded floated.   He was thrown to the wild beasts but these fawned upon him and could not be forced away until he had blessed them.   He was bound on the wheel but the ropes snapped and the wheel broke.   An attempt was made to behead him but the sword bent and the executioners were converted.   Pantaleon implored Heaven to forgive them, for which reason he also received the name of Panteleemon (the all-compassionate).   It was not until he himself desired it that it was possible to behead him, nailed to a tree.    The priest Hermolaus and the brothers Hermippos and Hermocrates suffered death with him, in the year c 305.

Martyrs of Nicomedia – 3 saints: Three Christians martyred together. The only other information to survive are their names – Felix, Jucunda and Julia. Nicomedia, Asia Minor.

Seven Sleepers of Ephesus: A group of seven young Christian men who hid in a cave in hopes of avoiding the persecution of Decius in the year 250. Found and arrested, they were ordered by the pro-consul in Ephesus to renounce their faith; they refused and were sentenced to die. Legend says that they were walled up in their hiding cave, guarded by the dog Al Rakim; when the cave wall was breached in 479 – they all woke up!
It is likely that the youths were tortured to death in various ways and buried in the cave. The resurrection story confusion came from the phrase “went to sleep in the Lord” which was used to describe the death of Christians and 479 is when their relics were discovered. Their names were Constantinus, Dionysius, Joannes, Malchus, Martinianus, Maximianus and Serapion. They were martyred in 250 in Ephesus (in modern Turkey); tradition says that they were walled up in a cave to suffocate but other records indicate that they were tortured to death in various ways. Their relics discovered in 479 and translated to Marseilles, France and enshrined in a large stone coffin.

Novena In Honour of Saint John Marie Vianney

Day One – 26 July – We pray for an ARDENT FAITH

DAY ONE - NOVENA ST JOHN VIANNEY FOR AN ARDENT FAITH

Saint John Marie Baptiste Vianney you were born of a deeply religious mother;  from her you received the Holy Faith;  you learned to love God and to pray.   At a young age, you were seen kneeling in the front of the statue of Mary.   Your soul was supernaturally carried towards the things on High.

Despite the high cost, you answered your vocation!
Against many obstacles and contradictions, you had to fight and suffer to become the perfect priest which you became.   But your deep spirit of faith supported you in all these battles.

0 Great Saint you know the desire of my soul;  I would like to serve God better;  from Him I have received so many good things.

For this, obtain for me more courage and especially the depth of an ardent faith.

Many of my thoughts, words and actions are useless for my sanctification and for my salvation because this supernatural spirit does not stir up my life.

Help me to be better in the future.
Holy Priest of Ars, I have confidence in your intercession.

Pray for me during this novena especially for …

(mention silently your special intentions).

Thought for the Day – 26 July

Thought for the Day – 26 July

By tradition Joachim and Anne are considered to be the names of the parents of Mary, the Mother of God.   We have no historical evidence, however, of any elements of their lives, including their names.   Any stories about Mary’s father and mother come to us through legend and tradition.   We get the oldest story from a document called the Gospel of James, though in no way should this document be trusted to be factual, historical, or the Word of God.   The legend told in this document says that after years of childlessness, an angel appeared to tell Anne and Joachim that they would have a child.   Anne promised to dedicate this child to God (much the way that Samuel was dedicated by his mother Hannah — Anne — in I Kings).

For those who wonder what we can learn from people we know nothing about and how we can honour them, we must focus on why they are honoured by the church.   Whatever their names or the facts of their lives, the truth is that it was the parents of Mary who nurtured Mary, taught her, brought her up to be a worthy Mother of God.   It was their teaching that led her to respond to God’s request with faith,  “Let it be done to me as you will.”   It was their example of parenting that Mary must have followed as she brought up her own son, Jesus.   It was their faith that laid the foundation of courage and strength that allowed her to stand by the cross as her son was crucified and still believe. Such parents can be examples and models for all parents. (Fr Thomas Rosica, CSB)

One Minute Reflection – 26 July

How wonderful is God among his saints; come, let us adore him…..Psalm 94

REFLECTION – “Joachim and Anne, how blessed a couple!   All creation is indebted to you. For at your hands the Creator was offered a gift excelling all other gifts:  a chaste mother, who alone was worthy of Him.   Joachim and Anne, how blessed and spotless a couple! You will be known by the fruit you have borne, as the Lord says:  “By their fruits you will know them.”   The conduct of your life pleased God and was worthy of your daughter.   For by the chaste and holy life you led together, you have fashioned a jewel of virginity: she who remained a virgin before, during and after giving birth.   She alone for all time would maintain her virginity in mind and soul as well as in body.   Joachim and Anne, how chaste a couple!   While leading a devout and holy life in your human nature, you gave birth to a daughter nobler than the angels, whose queen she now is.” – from a sermon by Saint John Damascene (675-749) – Doctor of the Church

PRAYER – O Lord, God of our Fathers, who bestowed on Saints Joachim and Anne this grace, that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate Son, grant, through the prayers of both, that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people. Our Morning Offering – 26 July

Prayer to Sts Anne and Joachim
Parents of the Immaculate Conception

Good parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
grandparents of our Saviour, Jesus Christ,
When life seems barren,
help us to trust in God’s mercy.
When we are confused,
help us to find the way to God.
When we are lost in the desert,
lead us to those whom God
has called us to love.
When our marriage seems lifeless,
show us the eternal youth of the Lord.
When we are selfish,
teach us to cling only
to that which lasts.
When we are afraid,
help us to trust in God.
When we are ashamed,
remind us that we are God’s children.
When we sin,
lead us to do God’s will.
You who know God’s will
for husband and wife,
help us to live chastely.
You who know God’s will for the family,
keep all families close to you.
You who suffered without children,
intercede for all infertile couples.
You who trusted in God’s will,
help us to respect God’s gift of fertility.
You who gave birth to the Blessed Mother,
inspire couples to be co-creators with God.
You who taught the Mother of God,
teach us to nurture children in holy instruction.
You whose hearts trusted in God,
hear our prayers.
God of our fathers, You gave Saints Anne and Joachim
the privilege of being the parents of Mary,
the mother of Your incarnate Son.
May their prayers help us to attain the salvation
You have promised to Your people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

All our information concerning the names and lives of Sts Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary, is derived from apocryphal literature, the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary, the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and the Protoevangelium of James.   Though the earliest form of the latter, on which directly or indirectly the other two seem to be based, goes back to about A.D. 150, we can hardly accept as beyond doubt its various statements on its sole authority.   In the Orient the Protoevangelium had great authority and portions of it were read on the feasts of Mary by the Greeks, Syrians, Copts, and Arabians.   In the Occident, however, it was rejected by the Fathers of the Church until its contents were incorporated by Jacobus de Voragine in his “Golden Legend” in the thirteenth century. From that time on the story of St. Anne spread over the West and was amply developed, until St. Anne became one of the most popular saints also of the Latin Church.

The Protoevangelium gives the following account:   In Nazareth there lived a rich and pious couple, Joachim and Hannah.   They were childless.   When on a feast day Joachim presented himself to offer sacrifice in the temple, he was repulsed by a certain Ruben, under the pretext that men without offspring were unworthy to be admitted. Whereupon Joachim, bowed down with grief, did not return home, but went into the mountains to make his plaint to God in solitude.   Also Hannah, having learned the reason of the prolonged absence of her husband, cried to the Lord to take away from her the curse of sterility, promising to dedicate her child to the service of God.   Their prayers were heard; an angel came to Hannah and said:  “Hannah, the Lord has looked upon thy tears;  thou shalt conceive and give birth and the fruit of thy womb shall be blessed by all the world”.   The angel made the same promise to Joachim, who returned to his wife. Hannah gave birth to a daughter whom she called Miriam (Mary).   Since this story is apparently a reproduction of the biblical account of the conception of Samuel, whose mother was also called Hannah, even the name of the mother of Mary seems to be doubtful.

In the Latin Church St. Anne was not venerated, except, perhaps, in the south of France, before the thirteenth century.   Her picture, painted in the eighth century, which was found lately in the church of Santa Maria Antiqua in Rome, owes its origin to Byzantine influence.   Her feast, under the influence of the “Golden Legend”, is first found (26 July) in the thirteenth century, e.g. at Douai (in 1291), where a foot of St. Anne was venerated (feast of translation, 16 September).   It was introduced in England by Urban VI, 21 November, 1378, from which time it spread all over the Western Church.   It was extended to the universal Latin Church in 1584.

A little interesting snippet – St Anne is patroness of miners because Christ being compared to gold, Mary to silver.

ANNOUNCING A NOVENA in Honour of the Transfiguration of our Lord

ANNOUNCING A NOVENA
in Honour of
the Transfiguration of our Lord

BEGINNING – 28 JULY

The Revelation of Christ’s Divine Glory

The feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ celebrates the revelation of Christ’s divine glory on Mount Tabor in Galilee (Matthew 17:1-6; Mark 9:1-8; Luke 9:28-36).   After revealing to His disciples that He would be put to death in Jerusalem (Matthew 16:21), Christ, along with Saints Peter, James, and John, went up the mountain. There, Saint Matthew writes, “he was transfigured before them.

And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow.”

QUICK FACTS ABOUT THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION
Date: 6 August

THE HISTORY OF THE FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION
The brightness with which He shone on Mount Tabor was not something added to Christ but the manifestation of His true divine nature and a forecast of His Resurrection.   For Peter, James and John, it was also a glimpse of the glories of Heaven and of the resurrected body promised to all Christians.

When Christ was transfigured, two others appeared with Him:  Moses, representing the Old Testament Law, and Elijah, representing the prophets. Thus Christ, Who stood between the two and spoke with them, appeared to the disciples as the fulfillment of both the Law and the prophets.

At Christ’s baptism in the Jordan, the voice of God the Father was heard to proclaim that “This is my beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17). During the Transfiguration, God the Father pronounced the same words (Matthew 17:5).

Despite the importance of this event, the Feast of the Transfiguration was not among the earliest of feasts celebrated by Christians.   It was first celebrated in Asia starting in the fourth or fifth century and spread throughout the Christian East in the centuries following.   The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that it wasn’t commonly celebrated in the West until the tenth century. Pope Callixtus III elevated the Transfiguration to a feast of the universal Church and established August 6 as the date of its celebration.

The Novena is often prayed as a Community after Benediction for 9 days, however, if our parish is not offering this Novena, we too can pray it on our own, to assist in preparing for this great revelation of our Lord and to help us obtain the great realisation and joy which Peter, James and John experienced.

Let us Pray!

Thought for the Day – 25 July – St Christopher – Memorial today 25 July

St Christopher, one of the “Fourteen Holy Helpers,” has been highly venerated since ancient times in both the Eastern and Western Churches.   The older martyrologies say that he suffered death for Christ;  in more recent centuries piety has woven garlands of legend about his name.   Christopher has become a giant who wished to enter the service of the most powerful of lords.   He first thought that the emperor qualified;  later he selected the devil and finally he discovered Christ to be the most powerful Sovereign over all the world.  From then on he served Him with greatest fidelity.

Because Christopher was of giant stature, he practiced charity by carrying pilgrims across a certain river.   Once a child asked to be taken across.   He complied as usual. While carrying the child on his shoulders through the river, it became heavier and heavier and finally he could hardly support it.   Then the revelation was made:  “You are carrying the Lord of the world!” It was Christ (Christopher means “Christ-carrier”).

In all of us, our water is turned into wine when we get close to Jesus Christ!

The legend has the nature of a symbol. Bishop Vida gives the following exposition: “Because you, O Christopher, always carried Christ in your heart, the artists place Christ on your shoulders.   Because you suffered much, they paint you standing deep in the waters.   And because you could not accomplish this without being large of stature, they have made you a giant, bigger than great temples;  therefore do you live under the open heavens during the greatest cold.   And since you conquered all that is difficult, they have given you a blossoming palm as traveling staff.”

One Minute Reflection – 25 July

Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.”……Matthew 20:28

matthew 20 28

REFLECTION – “…we can learn much from St James: promptness in accepting the Lord’s call even when He asks us to leave the “boat” of our human securities, enthusiasm in following Him on the paths that He indicates to us over and above any deceptive presumption of our own, readiness to witness to Him with courage, if necessary to the point of making the supreme sacrifice of life. Thus James the Greater stands before us as an eloquent example of generous adherence to Christ. He, who initially had requested, through his mother, to be seated with his brother next to the Master in His Kingdom, was precisely the first to drink the chalice of the passion and to share martyrdom with the Apostles.
And, in the end, summarising everything, we can say that the journey, not only exterior but above all interior, from the mount of the Transfiguration to the mount of the Agony, symbolises the entire pilgrimage of Christian life, among the persecutions of the world and the consolations of God, as the Second Vatican Council says. In following Jesus, like St James, we know that even in difficulties we are on the right path.”…..Pope Benedict XVI – General Audience, June 21, 2006

Prayer for the Intercession of St James

O glorious Apostle, Saint James,
who by reason of your fervent
and generous heart
was chosen by Jesus to be witness
of His glory on Mount Tabor
and of His agony in Gethsemane;
you, whose very name is a symbol
of warfare and victory:
obtain for us strength and consolation
in the unending warfare of this life,
that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus,
we may be victors in the strife
and deserve to receive the victor’s crown in heaven.

Saint of the Day – 25 July – Feast of St James the Greater, Apostle of Christ

Saint of the Day – 25 July – Feast of St James the Greater, Apostle of Christ and Marytr – Also known as: James Major, James the Elder, James the More, James, son of Zebedee, Santiago de España, Son of Thunder, Iago, Santiago, the Moor Slayer.   Martyred – stabbed with a sword by King Herod Agrippa I in 44 at Jerusalem.   Tradition says his body was taken by Angels and sailed in a rudderless, unattended boat to Spain where a massive rock closed around it.   His relics are at at Compostela, Spain.  Patronages – against arthritis or rheumatism, apothecaries, druggists or pharmacists, blacksmiths, equestrians, horsemen, riders, furriers, knights, labourers, pilgrims, soldiers, tanners, veterinarians, Spanish conquistadors, Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Spain, Archdiocese of Seattle, Washington, diocese of Bangued, Philippines, 20 cities.    St James was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and traditionally considered the first Apostle to be Martyred.   He was a son of Zebedee and Salome and brother of John the Apostle.   He is also called James the Greater or James the Great to distinguish him from James, son of Alphaeus and James the brother of Jesus (James the Just).  James the son of Zebedee is the patron saint of Spaniards and as such is often identified as Santiago.
james and santiago de compostelajames the greater.BIG.6.- GUIDO RENI

His parents seem to have been people of means.   Zebedee, his father, was a fisherman of the Sea of Galilee, who probably lived in or near Bethsaida, present Galilee, Israel, perhaps in Capernaum and had some boatmen or hired men.   Salome, his mother, was one of the pious women who afterwards followed Christ and “ministered unto him of their substance” and his brother John was personally known to the high-priest and must have had wherewithal to provide for the Mother of Jesus.james the greater

It is probable that he and his brother had not received the technical training of the rabbinical schools;  in this sense they were unlearned and without any official position among the Jews.   But, according to the social rank of their parents, they must have been men of ordinary education, in the common walks of Jewish life.   James is described as one of the first disciples to join Jesus.   The Synoptic Gospels state that James and John were with their father by the seashore when Jesus called them to follow him.[Matt. 4:21-22][Mk. 1:19-20] James was one of only three Apostles whom Jesus selected to bear witness to his Transfiguration.

James and John asked Jesus to grant them seats on his right and left in his glory.   Jesus rebuked them and the other ten apostles were annoyed with them.   James and his brother wanted to call down fire on a Samaritan town but were rebuked by Jesus[Lk 9:51-6].   The Acts of the Apostles records that “Herod the king” (traditionally identified with Herod Agrippa) had James executed by sword.   He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament.   He is, thus, traditionally believed to be the first of the twelve apostles martyred for his faith.[Acts 12:1-2]   Biblical scholars suggest that this may have been caused by James’ fiery temper, for which he and his brother earned the nickname Boanerges or “Sons of Thunder”

Saints John the Evangelist and James the Greater Martín Gómez the ElderChrist with sons of Zebedee James and John

Saint James is the Patron Saint of Spain and, according to legend, his remains are held in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.   (The name Santiago is the local evolution of Vulgar Latin Sanctu Iacobu, “Saint James.”)   The traditional pilgrimage to the grave of the Saint, known as the “Way of St James,” has been the most popular pilgrimage for Western European Catholics from the Early Middle Ages onwards.   Some 237,886 pilgrims registered in 2014 as having completed the final 100 km walk (200 km by bicycle) to Santiago to qualify for a Compostela.   When 25 July falls on a Sunday, it is a “Jubilee” year (an Año Santo Jubilar Compostelano or Año Santo Jacobeo) and a special east door is opened for entrance into Santiago Cathedral.   Jubilee years fall every 5, 6, and 11 years.   In the 2004 Jubilee year, 179,944 pilgrims received a Compostela.    In 2010 the number had risen to 275,135.

Medieval “Santiago Matamoros” legend – tradition states that he miraculously appeared to fight for the Christian army during the legendary battle of Clavijo and was henceforth called Santiago MatamorosSaint James the Moor-slayer.   Cervantes has Don Quixote explaining that “the great knight of the russet cross was given by God to Spain as Patron and Protector.”

the wonders of the holy name-day fifteen-24 july

The Awful Crime of Ingratitude:

We thank our friends most effusively for any
little favour they do us but we forget or neglect to
thank God for His immense love of us, for becoming
man for us, for dying for us, for all the Masses we
can hear and the Holy Communions we can receive
– and do not receive.   What black ingratitude!

By repeating often the Name of Jesus we correct
this grave fault and thank God and give Him great
glory and joy.
Do you not wish to give joy to God?   You do.
Then dear friend thank, thank God.   He is waiting
for your thanks.
God loves each one.
We have said that Our Lord in the dreadful
sufferings of His Passion, in the Agony in the
Garden, when He was hanging on the Cross, saw
us all and offered for each one every pang of pain,
every drop of His Precious Blood.
Can it be possible that God is so good that He
thinks of each one, that He loves each of us so
much?
Our poor hearts and minds are small and mean
and find it hard to believe that God can be so
good, that He troubles Himself about us.
But God, as He is Omnipotent, as He is infinitely
wise, He is also infinitely good and generous
and loving.   To understand how God thought of
each one of us in the Passion, when He was hanging
on the Cross, we have only to remember what happens
in the millions of Holy Communions received
every day.
God comes to each one of us with all the
plenitude of the Divinity;  He enters into each one
as fully and entirely as He is in Heaven.   He comes
into each one as if that one were the only one who
received him that day.   He comes with infinite,
personal love.   That we all believe.
And how does He enter into us?   He does not
merely come into our mouths, our hearts, He comes
into our souls, He unites Himself to our souls so
intimatelv that He becomes one with us.
Let us think for a moment of how the Great,
Almighty, Eternal God is in our very soul in the
most intimate possible way, that He is there with
all His infinite love, that He remains there and
this not once but every morning if we so wish.
If we think and understand this it will be easy
to see how He offered all His merits and all His
sufferings for each one.

The Devil:

The great, great evil, the great danger that
threatens each of us every day and every night
of our lives is the Devil.
St Peter and St Paul warn us in the strongest
language to beware of the Devil, for he is using
all his tremendous power, his mighty intelligence
to ruin us, to harm, to hurt us in every way.
There is no danger, no enemy in the World we
have to fear as we should fear the Devil.
He cannot attack God so he turns all his implacable
hate and malice against us.
We are destined to take the thrones he and the
other Angels have lost.   This lashes him into wild
fury against us.   Many foolish, ignorant Catholics
never think of this;  they take no care to defend
themselves and so allow the Devil to inflict on them
infinite harm and cause them untold sufferings.
Our best, onr easiest remedy is the Name of
Jesus.   It drives the Devil flying from our sides
and saveS us from countless evils.
Oh dear readers say constantly this all-powerful
Name and the Devil can do you no harm.   Say it
in all dangers, in all temptations.   Wake up if
you have been asleep.   Open your eyes to the terrible
enemy who is ever seeking your ruin.
Priests should preach frequently on this all-important
subject.  They should warn their penitents
in the confessional against the Devil.   They counsel
them to avoid bad companions, who make them
lead bad lives.   Incomparably more dreadful is the
influence of the Devil on them.
Teachers, Catechists and Mothers should constantly
warn their children against the Devil.
All their efforts will be only too little.

Lord Jesus, I love You with all my heart and soul, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Amen

The Chaplet of St Charbel Makhluf

The Chaplet of St Charbel Makhluf

THE CHAPLET
The chaplet is made up of five sets of beads, three red, one white and one blue. Five black beads, divide the sets. A medal of the saint connects the beads, with a single white bead following the medal and preceding the five sets.

The red beads are for the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, the virtues by which religious share in the Passion of Christ.

The white beads represent the Holy Eucharist, and the blue beads love and devotion to Our Blessed Mother.

ORDER OF RECITATION
On the first white bead after the medal say the “Father of Truth” prayer. On each black bead recite an “Our Father”.

On the first three red beads say the “Hail Mary” in honor of Saint Charbel’s fidelity to the vow of poverty.

On the second set of red beads say the “Hail Mary” in honor of Saint Charbel’s fidelity to the vow of chastity.

On the third set of red beads say the “Hail Mary” in honor of Saint Charbel’s fidelity to the vow of obedience.

On the three white beads say the “Hail Mary” in honor of Saint Charbel’s love for the Eucharist.

On the three blue beads say the “Hail Mary” in honor of Saint Charbel’s devotion to Our Blessed Mother. Conclude with the prayer to obtain graces on the medal.

Father of Truth Prayer
Father of Truth, behold Your Son, a sacrifice pleasing to You. Accept this offering of Him who died for me; behold His blood shed on Golgotha for my salvation. It pleads for me. For His sake, accept my offering. Many are my sins, but greater is Your mercy. When placed on a scale, Your mercy prevails over the weight of the mountains known only to You. Consider the sin and consider the atonement; the atonement is greater and exceeds the sin. Your beloved Son sustained the nails and the lance because of my sins so in His sufferings You are satisfied and I live.

Prayer to Obtain Graces
Lord, infinitely holy and glorified in Your saints, You have inspired Charbel, the saint monk, to lead the perfect life of a hermit. We thank You for granting him the blessing and the strength to detach himself from the world so that the heroism of the monastic virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience might triumph in his hermitage. We beseech You to grant us the grace of loving and serving You, following his example. Almighty God, who have manifested the power of Saint Charbel’s intercession through his countless miracles and favors, grant us this grace (here mention your intention) which we request from You through his intercession. Amen.

Thought for the Day – 24 July – The Memorial of St Charbel of Makhluf

In 1950, Father George Webby, a Maronite priest from Scranton, visited Lebanon, took a photo of monks outside the wall of the monastery in which St. Charbel had lived and upon development of the picture saw that St. Charbel miraculously appeared with the monks, according to information provided by St. Anthony’s Church.

St. Charbel is listed among The Incorruptibles, saints whose bodies were found intact years after burial. His body kept pouring oil and blood until the year before his canonization in 1977.

“…a hermit of the Lebanese mountain is inscribed in the number of the blessed, a new eminent member of monastic sanctity is enriching, by his example and his intercession, the entire Christian people.   May he make us understand, in a world largely fascinated by wealth and comfort, the paramount value of poverty, penance and asceticism, to liberate the soul in its ascent to God…” ……….Pope Paul VI, October 9, 1977

Watch – “The Saint Charble Song” …it’s special…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaSKjhK1yxA#action=share

A beautiful ode to Saint Charbel, written by J. Michael Thompson- (a Catholic Composer, professor of ecclesiastical chant):

The mountain heights of Lebanon
Resound with songs of joy;
The cedars of that ancient land
Stand tall as we employ
Our hymns of praise and thankfulness
For Sharbel’s saintly ways,
Lived out in strict humility
That guided all his days.

True monk and hermit of the hills,
Saint Maron’s modest son
Scorned wealth and comfort in his life
That heaven’s crown be won.
Of Mary, heaven’s Queen and Gate,
Devoted son was he,
Who cherished all the ancient rites
With great humility.

Fierce lover of the lowly life,
True father of the poor,
As you have done, so help us all
To struggle and endure,
That Christ be praised in ev’ry life,
That riches not ensnare
Or rule us in our daily walk;
That strong may be our prayer!

O Father, Son, and Spirit blest,
One God in persons three,
Receive this hymn we offer now,
And keep your Church e’er free
To follow, as Saint Sharbel did,
Enflamed with love so bright
That we, with eyes fixed firm on Christ,
May vanquish sin’s dark night.
