Thought for the Day – 15 July – ‘Meditation on Christ in His humanity …’

Thought for the Day – 15 July – Monday of the Fifteenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 10:34-11,1 and The Memorial of St Bonaventure OFM (1221-1274) Seraphic Doctor of the Church

Saint Bonaventure saw the spires of the great cathedrals reaching up to heaven as a reflection of the human soul’s reaching up to God in his The Soul’s Journey into God. Likewise, the streams of light coming into the church through the stained-glass windows, reflect God expressing Himself, in the wide variety of creatures upon whom He showers His gifts of grace.

And the images go on and on as the saint reaches into human experience of creation and cultural artifacts and finds vestigium (the footprints) of God since everything in creation, reflects in some way, the grandeur of God.   Human beings, of course, are the actual image of God.

It was this ability to take the spirituality of Saint Francis—as reflected in Saint Francis’ Canticle of the Sun, for instance—and place it at the heart of his writings, keeping the simplicity of the Franciscan insights and creating a sublime theology, that truly deserves the name “Seraphic.”

When Bonaventure was declared a Doctor of the Universal Church in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V, he was given the title “Seraphic Doctor.”   Merriam-Webster defines a seraph as one of the highest-ranking angels as well as “one of the six-winged angels standing in the presence of God.”   It was as a seraph that Christ appeared to Saint Francis when he received the stigmata on Mount La Verna.   Therefore, it is fitting to use the term to describe the soaring mysticism of Saint Bonaventure.

In his General Audience on 3 March 2010, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the life of St Bonaventure.   He called to mind the great works of literature, art, philosophy and theology that were inspired by the Christian faith during the time period in which the saint lived.

“Among the great Christian figures who contributed to the composition of this harmony between faith and culture, Bonaventure stands out, a man of action and contemplation, of profound piety and prudent government,” Pope Benedict said.

The Pope called on the faithful to take note of “the central role that Christ always played in Bonaventure’s life and teaching,” and to imitate the way in which “the whole of his thinking was profoundly Christocentric.”

“Meditation on Christ in His humanity is corporeal in deed, in fact but spiritual in mind. . . . By adopting this habit, you will steady your mind, be trained to virtues and receive strength of soul….Let meditation of Christ’s life be your one and only aim, your rest, your food, your desire, your study.” – St Bonaventure

Thought for the Day – 8 July – ‘Listen to Him, learn from Him’

Thought for the Day – 8 July – Monday of the Fourteenth week in Ordinary Time, Year C and the Memorial of Blessed Peter Vigne (1670-1740), Apostle of Eucharistic Adoration and Founder of the Sisters Of The Blessed Sacrament

“The first thing for a disciple
is to be with the Master,
to listen to Him and to learn from Him.
This is always true and it is true
at every moment of our lives.
If the warmth of God,
of His love, of His tenderness
is not in our own hearts,
then how can we,
who are poor sinners,
warm the heart of others.
This is a life-long journey,
as in the humility of prayer
the Holy Spirit convinces us of
the Lordship of Christ within us.
The Lord calls us to follow Him
with courage and fidelity,
he has made us the great gift
of choosing us as His disciples;
He invites us to proclaim Him
with joy as the Risen one,
but He asks us
to do so by word and by
the witness of our lives, in daily life.
The Lord is the only God of our lives,
and He invites us to strip ourselves
of our many idols
and to worship Him alone.”

Thought for the Day – 30 June – We proclaim Christ to the whole world

Thought for the Day – 30 June – Thirteenth Sunday of the Year in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Luke 9:51–62

We proclaim Christ to the whole world

Saint Paul VI (1897-1978)
Bishop of Rome

An excerpt from one of his homilies

Not to preach the Gospel would be my undoing, for Christ Himself sent me as His apostle and witness.   The more remote, the more difficult the assignment, the more my love of God spurs me on. I am bound to proclaim that Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God. Because of Him we come to know the God we cannot see.   He is the firstborn of all creation, in Him all things find their being. Man’s teacher and redeemer, He was born for us, died for us and for us He rose from the dead.

All things, all history converges in Christ.   A man of sorrow and hope, He knows us and loves us  . As our friend He stays by us throughout our lives, at the end of time He will come to be our judge but, we also know that He will be the complete fulfilment of our lives and our great happiness for all eternity.

I can never cease to speak of Christ for He is our truth and our light; He is the way, the truth and the life.   He is our bread, our source of living water who allays our hunger and satisfies our thirst.   He is our shepherd, our leader, our ideal, our comforter and our brother.

He is like us but more perfectly human, simple, poor, humble and yet, while burdened with work, He is more patient. He spoke on our behalf, He worked miracles and He founded a new kingdom: in it the poor are happy, peace is the foundation of a life in common, where the pure of heart and those who mourn are uplifted and comforted, the hungry find justice, sinners are forgiven and all discover that they are brothers.

The image I present to you is the image of Jesus Christ.   As Christians you share His name, He has already made most of you His own.   So once again I repeat His name to you Christians and I proclaim to all men – Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, Lord of the new universe, the great hidden key to human history and the part we play in it.   He is the mediator—the bridge, if you will—between heaven and earth.   Above all He is the Son of man, more perfect than any man, being also the Son of God, eternal and infinite.   He is the son of Mary His mother on earth, more blessed than any woman. She is also our mother in the spiritual communion of the mystical body.

Remember: [it] is Jesus Christ I preach day in and day out.   His name I would see echo and re-echo for all time even to the ends of the earth.i am the way the truth and the life jon 14 8 31 march 2019 laetare sunday.jpg

Thought for the Day – 25 June -Manifesting Christ by St Gregory of Nyssa

Thought for the Day – 25 June – Tuesday of the Twelfth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 7:6,12=14

Christ should be Manifest in our Whole Life

Saint Gregory of Nyssa (c 335–C 395)
Bishop and Father of the Church –
Brother of St Basil the Great (Father & Doctor)

An excerpt from his treatise On Christian Perfection

The life of the Christian has three distinguishing aspects –  deeds, words and thought. Thought comes first, then words, since our words express openly the interior conclusions of the mind.   Finally, after thoughts and words, comes action, for our deeds carry out what the mind has conceived.  So when one of these results in our acting or speaking or thinking, we must make sure that all our thoughts, words and deeds are controlled by the divine ideal, the revelation of Christ.   For then our thoughts, words and deeds will not fall short of the nobility of their implications.

What then must we do, we who have been found worthy of the name of Christ?   Each of us must examine his thoughts, words and deeds, to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from Him.   This examination is carried out in various ways. Our deeds or our thoughts or our words are not in harmony with Christ if they issue from passion.   They then bear the mark of the enemy who smears the pearl of the heart with the slime of passion, dimming and even destroying the lustre of the precious stone.

On the other hand, if they are free from and untainted by every passionate inclination, they are directed toward Christ, the author and source of peace.   He is like a pure, untainted stream.   If you draw from Him the thoughts in your mind and the inclinations of your heart, you will show a likeness to Christ, your source and origin, as the gleaming water in a jar resembles the flowing water from which it was obtained.if you draw from him - st gregory of nyssa - 25 jun 2019.jpg

For the purity of Christ and the purity that is manifest in our hearts are identical.  Christ’s purity, however, is the fountainhead, ours has its source in Him and flows out of Him.   Our life is stamped with the beauty of His thought.   The inner and the outer man are harmonised in a kind of music.   The mind of Christ is the controlling influence that inspires us to moderation and goodness in our behaviour.   As I see it, Christian perfection consists in thiS – sharing the titles which express the meaning of Christ’s name, we bring out this meaning in our minds, our prayers and our way of life.

I am the Way and the Truth and the Life…John 14:8

One Minute Reflection – 25 June – Christ, the narrow door

One Minute Reflection – 25 June – Tuesday of the Twelfth week in Ordinary Time, Year C, Gospel: Matthew 7:6,12-14

“Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life and those who find it are few.”…Matthew 7:13-14enter through the narrow gate - matthew 7 - 13 - 14

REFLECTION – “Of course Jesus’ door is a narrow one but not because it is a torture chamber.   No, not for that reason!   Rather, because He asks us to open our hearts to Him, to recognise that we are sinners in need of His salvation, His forgiveness and His love in order to have the humility to accept His mercy and to let ourselves be renewed by Him.

Jesus tells us in the Gospel that being Christians does not mean having a “label!”    I ask you, are you Christians by label or by the truth?   And let each one answer within him- or herself!   Not Christians, never Christians by label!   Christians in truth, Christians in the heart.   The whole of our life must pass through the narrow door which is Christ.”…Pope Francis (Angelus, 25 August 2013)

PRAYER – Increase in us, Lord, Your gift of faith, so that the praise we offer You, may ever yield it’s fruit from heaven,   May the Spirit pour into our hearts, that we may walk in Your light and become like You.   May the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Grace and all Your Saints, help us in our striving for holiness.   Through Christ, our Lord in union with the Holy Spirit, God forever, amen.our lady of grace pray for us 25 june 2019

Firstborn of Many Brothers

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide”…John 15:16

Blessed Isaac of Stella O.Cist. (c 1100 – c 1170)
Cistercian Monk, Abbot, Theologian, Philosopher

An excerpt from his Sermon 42

Just as the head and body of a man, form one single man, so the Son of the Virgin and those He has chosen to be His members, form a single man and the one Son of Man. Christ is whole and entire, head and body, say the Scriptures, since all the members form one body, which with its Head is one Son of Man and He, with the Son of God is one Son of God, who Himself with God is one God.   Therefore, the whole body with its Head is Son of Man, Son of God and God.   This is the explanation of the Lord’s words – Father, I desire that as you and I are one, so they may be one with us.

And so, according to this well-known reading of Scripture, neither the body without the head, nor the Head without the body, nor the Head and body without God, make the whole Christ.   When all are united with God, they become one God.   The Son of God is one with God by nature, the Son of Man is one with Him in His person;  we, His body, are one with him sacramentally.   Consequently, those, who by faith, are spiritual members of Christ, can truly say that they are what He is – the Son of God and God Himself.   But what Christ is, by His nature, we are as His partners, what He is of Himself in all fullness, we are as participants.   Finally, what the Son of God is by generation, His members are by adoption, according to the text – As sons you have received the Spirit of adoption, enabling you to cry, Abba, Father.

Through His Spirit, He gave men the power to become sons of God, so that all those He has chosen might be taught by the firstborn, among many brothers to say – Our Father, who are in heaven.   Again He says elsewhere – I ascend to my Father and to your Father.

By the Spirit, from the womb of the Virgin, was born our Head, the Son of Man and by the same Spirit, in the waters of baptism, we are reborn as His body and as sons of God. And just as He was born without any sin, so we are reborn in the forgiveness of all our sins.   As on the cross, He bore the sum total of the whole body’s sins in His own physical body, so He gave His members the grace of rebirth, in order that no sin might be imputed to His mystical body.   It is written – Blessed is the man to whom the Lord imputes no sin.   The blessed man of this text is undoubtedly Christ, who forgives sins insofar as God is His head.   Insofar as this Man is the Head of the body, no sin is forgiven Him.   But insofar as the body that belongs to this Head consists of many members, sin is not imputed to it.

Just in Himself, it is He who justifies Himself.   He alone is both Saviour and saved.   In His own body on the cross, He bore what He had washed from His body by the waters of baptism.   Bringing salvation through wood and through water, He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, which He took upon Himself.   Himself a priest, He offers Himself as sacrifice to God and He Himself is God.   Thus, through His own self, the Son is reconciled to Himself as God, as well as to the Father and to the Holy Spirit.jut as the head of a body - bl isaac of stella - 24 may 2019 - firstborn of many brothers.jpg

One Minute Reflection – 13 May – “…The sheep hear his voice”

One Minute Reflection – 13 May – Monday of the Fourth Week of Easter, C – Gospel: John 10:1-10 and the 102nd Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima

“… the sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”…John 10:3

REFLECTION – “The mark of Christ’s sheep is their willingness to hear and obey, just as disobedience is the mark of those who are not His.

We take the word ‘hear’ to imply obedience to what has been said.   People who hear God are known by Him.   No-one is entirely unknown by God but to be known in this way, is to become part of His family.

Therefore, when Christ says, “I know mine,” He means I will receive them and give them a permanent mystical relationship with Myself.

It might be said that inasmuch as He has become man, He has made all human beings His relatives, since all are members of the same race.  We are all united to Christ in a mystical relationship because of His incarnation.    Yet those who do not preserve the likeness of His holiness are alienated from Him.   “My sheep follow me,” says Christ.  By a certain God-given grace, believers follow in the footsteps of Christ.   No longer subject to the shadows of the law, they obey the commands of Christ and guided by His words, rise through grace, to His own dignity, for they are called “children of God.

When Christ ascends into heaven, they also follow Him.”… St Cyril of Alexandria (376-444) Father & Doctor of the Church (Commentary on the Gospel of John)john 10 3 he calls his own sheep - the mark of christ's sheep is their willingness to hear - st cyril of alex 13 may 2019.jpg

PRAYER – Almighty God and Father, You have rescued Your faithful from enslavement to sin, by Your Son’s self-abasement.   You have raised up the world through His suffering. Fill us now with holy joy at His rising and triumph.   Let us hear His voice and follow Him to everlasting life.   Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!   Through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God now and forever, amen.pray-for-us-mother-of-god-13-may-2017

REFLECTION – “The Lord says:  “My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me; I give them eternal life”.   A little earlier He said to them: “Anyone who enters by me will be saved, he will go in ou, and will find pasture”. (Jn 10:9)   He will go into faith, he will go out from faith to vision, from belief to contemplation, will find pasture in eternal refreshment.

The Good Shepherd’s sheep will pasture because whoever follows Him with a guileless heart is nourished with a food of eternal freshness.   What are the pastures of these sheep but the eternal joys of an evergreen paradise?   The pasture of the elect, is the face of God always before us.   When we see Him perfectly, our hearts are endlessly satisfied with the food of life…

Let us seek these pastures, dearly beloved!   There we may enjoy the celebration of so many citizens.   Let the festival of those who rejoice attract us…   Let us enkindle our hearts, my friends, let our faith grow warm again for what it believes, let our desire for heavenly things take fire.   To love thus, is to be already on the way.   Let no adversity recall us from the joy of inner festivity, no difficulty on his journey, alters the desire, of a person wanting to go to some particular place.   Let no seductive good fortune lead us astray, he is a foolish traveller who sees pleasant meadows on his journey and forgets where he is going.”…  St Pope Gregory the Great (540-604) Father & Doctor of the ChurchHomilies on the Gospel, no15[14]let no seductive good fortune lead us astray - st pope gregory the great 12 may 2019 good shepherd sun

PRAYER – Almighty, ever-living God, bring us to the joy of Your heavenly city, so that we, Your little flock, may follow where Christ, our Good Shepherd, has gone before us, by the power of His Resurrection.   May the prayers of the Blessed Virgin, guide us, that we may always follow our Shepherd and thus reach our heavenly home, to praise Him forever. We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God now and for all eternity, amen.mater dei mother of god pray for us 12 may 2019

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life..”…John 6:68

Excerpt on Pope Benedict’s Catechesis
on Christ and the Church

Wednesday, 15 March 2006

“In choosing the Twelve, introducing them into a communion of life with Himself and involving them in His mission of proclaiming the Kingdom in words and works (cf. Mk 6: 7-13; Mt 10: 5-8; Lk 9: 1-6; 6: 13), Jesus wants to say that the definitive time has arrived in which to constitute the new People of God, the people of the 12 tribes, which now becomes a universal people, His Church.

With their very own existence, the Twelve – called from different backgrounds – become an appeal for all of Israel to convert and allow herself to be gathered into the new covenant, complete and perfect fulfilment of the ancient one.   The fact that He entrusted to His Apostles, during the Last Supper and before His Passion, the duty to celebrate His Pasch, demonstrates how Jesus wished to transfer to the entire community, in the person of its heads, the mandate to be a sign and instrument in history of the eschatological gathering begun by Him.   In a certain sense we can say that the Last Supper itself is the act of foundation of the Church, because He gives Himself and thus creates a new community, a community united in communion with Himself.

In this light, one understands how the Risen One confers upon them, with the effusion of the Spirit, the power to forgive sins (cf. Jn 20: 23).   Thus, the Twelve Apostles are the most evident sign of Jesus’ will. regarding the existence and mission of His Church, the guarantee that between Christ and the Church there is no opposition, despite the sins of the people who make up the Church, they are inseparable.

Therefore, a slogan that was popular some years back: “Jesus yes, Church no”, is totally inconceivable with the intention of Christ.   This individualistically chosen Jesus is an imaginary Jesus.

We cannot have Jesus without the reality He created and in which He communicates Himself.   Between the Son of God-made-flesh and His Church there is a profound, unbreakable and mysterious continuity by which Christ is present today in His people.

He is always contemporary with us, He is always contemporary with the Church, built on the foundation of the Apostles and alive in the succession of the Apostles.
And His very presence in the community, in which He Himself is always with us, is the reason for our joy.
Yes, Christ is with us, the Kingdom of God is coming.”he is al;ways contemporary with us - pope benedict john 6 68 11 may 2019.jpg

Quote of the Day – 11 May – Saturday Third Week of Easter, C

Jesus Christ
You have heard Him spoken of,
indeed the greater part of you are already His –
you are Christians.
So, to you Christians I repeat His name,
to everyone I proclaim Him –
Jesus Christ is the Beginning and the End,
the Alpha and the Omega.
He is the King of the new world.
He is the Secret of history.
He is the Key to our destiny.

One Minute Reflection – 10 May – “He is there and He is also here..”

One Minute Reflection – 10 May – and Friday of the Third Week of Easter, C, First Reading: Acts 9:1-20 and the Memorial of Blessed Ivan Merz (1896-1928)

“He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”…Acts 9:4

REFLECTION – “How can we show that He is there and that He is also here?   Let Paul answer for us, who was previously Saul.   First of all, the Lord’s own voice from heaven shows this: “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”   Had Paul climbed up to heaven then?   Had Paul even thrown a stone at heaven?   It was Christians he was persecuting, them he was tying up, them he was dragging off to be put to death, them he was everywhere hunting out of their hiding places and never sparing when he found them. To him the Lord said, “Saul, Saul.”   Where is He crying out from? Heaven.   So He’s up above.   “Why are you persecuting me?” So He’s down below.”…St Augustine (354-430) Bishop of Hippo, Father & Doctor (Sermon 122)acts 9 4 - saul saul - he is there and he is also here - st augustine - 10 may 2019.jpg

PRAYER – Almighty God, You sent Your Son and we have now come to know the grace of His Resurrection.   Through Him we live and move and have our being.   As we follow Him, He walks with us and leads us to You.   Grant we pray, that His mother and ours, may guide our way to Him and may the prayers of Blessed Ivan Merz, who always followed closely behind the Lord, be a solace in our trials.   Through Christ our Lord, with the Holy Spirit, God now and forever, amen.sancta-maria-mary-most-holy-pray-for-us-10-may-2018bl ivan merz pray for us 10 may 2019

“Do not labour for the food which perishes but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you...”John 6:27do not labour for the food which perishes - john 6 27 - 6 may 2019.jpg

REFLECTION – “Someone who works frenziedly on Sundays, thinking he is going to earn more money or get more done, is making a mistake in his calculations!   Can two or three dollars ever compensate for the harm he does himself by violating the law of God?   You imagine everything depends on your work, but then an illness, an accident…!   It takes so little: a storm, hail, frost…  Do not work for food that perishes but for that which dwells in eternal life.   What will you gain by having worked on Sunday?   You leave the land just as it is when you depart; you do not carry anything away.   Our first aim is to go to God, we are not on earth for anything but this!   My brethren, we should die on Sundays and come back to life again on Mondays.   Sunday belongs to God – it is His day, the Day of the Lord.   He made all the days of the week and could have kept them all.   He has given you six of them and has only held back the seventh for himself!”…St John Vianney (1786-1859)you leave the land just as it is-stjohn vianney 6 may 2019.jpg

PRAYER – King of heaven and earth, Lord God, rule over our hearts and bodies this day. Sanctify us and guide our every thought, word and deed, according to the commandments of Your law, so that now and forever, Your grace may free and save us. Let us walk in Your ways and be your lights and thus by our lives, help others to follow You.  Grant that the prayers of our blessed Mother, the Mother of Jesus Your Son and St Francois Laval, who always lived for You alone, may help us, as we work through each day to reach our heavenly home. Quote of the Day- 5 May – Third Sunday of Easter, Year C

“The Gospel of Easter is very clear –
we need to go back there, to see Jesus risen
and to become witnesses of His Resurrection.
This is not to go back in time,
it is not a kind of nostalgia.
It is returning to our first love,
in order to receive the fire which Jesus
has kindled in the world
and to bring that fire to all people,

One Minute Reflection – 1 May – “The light that never dims”

One Minute Reflection – 1 May – Wednesday of the Second week of Easter, the first day of Mary’s Month and the Memorial of St Joseph the Worker, Gospel: John 3:16–21

“But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.”…John 3:21

REFLECTION – “In the evening, when the Bishop is present, the deacon carries in the lamp.   And standing in the midst of all the faithful who are there, he will offer thanksgiving.   First of all he says the greeting:  “The Lord be with you,” and the people respond:  “And with your spirit.” – Then he says: “Let us give thanks to the Lord” and they reply: “It is right and just.   To Him be the greatness and supremacy together with the glory”… Then he will pray thus, saying:
“We give you thanks, Lord, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom you enlighten us by revealing the light that never dims.   Since day is spent and we have now reached evening, filled with the light of the day you created for our joy and since, through your grace, we do not now lack the light of evening, we praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom to you be glory and power and honour, with the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and through all ages. Amen.”   And everyone will say: “Amen.”
In this way, after the meal, all will stand in prayer.   The children say psalms as also the virgins.”…St Hippolytus of Rome (c 170– c 235) Priest and Martyr – Apostolic Tradition, 25john 3 21 but he who does what is true - we give you thanks Lord - st hippolytus 1 may 2019.jpg

PRAYER – Shed your clear light on our hearts, Lord, so that walking continually in the way of Your commandments, we may never be deceived or misled.   Your ways are not our ways, teach us to willingly agree to them, for You know which way we should go. Help us to say “yes” always to Your plan and to render ourselves as a sacrament of Your divine love to all we meet.   Fill us with the grace to be your tools to bring glory to Your kingdom.   St Joseph, silent and loving husband and father, as you worked for and protected your family on earth, protect us all now in the Church of Your adopted son. Through Him, our Our Lord Jesus Christ with You, in the union of the Holy Spirit, one God forever, amen.st joseph the worker pray for us 1 may 2019.jpg

REFLECTION –
“My Lord, God,
You have led me by a long, dark path,
Rocky and hard.
Often my strength threatened to fail me.
I almost lost all hope of seeing the light.
But when my heart grew numb with deepest grief,
A clear star rose for me.
Steadfast it guided me- I followed,
At first reluctant, but more confidently later.

At last I stood at Church’s gate.
It opened. I sought admission.
From Your priest’s mouth Your blessing greets me.
Within me stars are strung like pearls.
Red blossom stars show me the path to You.
They wait for You at Holy Night.
But Your goodness
Allows them to illuminate my path to You.
They lead me on.
The secret which I had to keep in hiding
Deep in my heart,
Now I can shout it out:
I believe-I profess!
The priest accompanies me to the altar:
I bend my face-
Holy water flows over my head.

Lord, is it possible that someone who is past
Midlife can be reborn (Jn 3:4)?
You said so and for me it was fulfilled,
A long life’s burden of guilt and suffering
Fell away from me.
Erect I receive the white cloak,
Which they place round my shoulders,
Radiant image of purity!
In my hand I hold a candle.
Its flame makes known
That deep within me glows Your holy life.

My heart has become Your manger,
Awaiting You,
But not for long!
Maria, Your mother and also mine
Has given me her name.
At midnight she will place her newborn child
Into my heart.

Ah, no-one’s heart can fathom,
What You’ve in store for those who love You (1Cor 2:9).
Now You are mine and I won’t let You go.
Wherever my life’s road may lead,
You are with me.
Nothing can ever part me from Your love (Rm 8:39).”

Thought for the Day – 27 April – By following Him, we can see Him!

Thought for the Day – 27 April – Saturday of Easter week

He is not here, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him (Mk 16:6)

“There is another important aspect (in the Resurrection), Jesus show Himself in the act of departure.
This is clearest in the event of Emmaus and in His meeting with Mary Magdalen.   He summons us to go with Him.
Resurrection is not an indulgence of curiosity – it is MISSION.   It’s intention is to transform the world!   It calls for an active joy, the joy of those who are themselves going along the path of the Risen One.
That is true today too – He only shows Himself to those who walk with Him.   The angel’s first word to the women was “He is not here, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him” (Mk 16:6).   So once and for all, we are told where the Risen One is to be found and how we are to meet Him – HE GOES BEFORE YOU.   He is present in preceding us.
By following Him, we can see Him!

Christ the source of resurrection and life

“This is the Day!”

Ancient Christian Author
Anonymous

An excerpt from an Easter Homily

Saint Paul rejoices in the knowledge that spiritual health has been restored to the human race.   Death entered the world through Adam, he explains but life has been given back to the world through Christ.   Again he says – The first man, being from the earth, is earthly by nature, the second man is from heaven and is heavenly.   As we have borne the image of the earthly man, the image of human nature grown old in sin, so let us bear the image of the heavenly man, human nature raised up, redeemed, restored and purified in Christ.   We must hold fast to the salvation we have received. Christ was the first fruits, says the Apostle, He is the source of resurrection and life.   Those who belong to Christ will follow Him.   Modelling their lives on His purity, they will be secure in the hope of His resurrection and of enjoying with Him the glory promised in heaven.   Our Lord Himself said so in the gospe -: Whoever follows me will not perish but will pass from death to life.

Thus the passion of our Saviour is the salvation of mankind.   The reason why He desired to die for us was that He wanted us, who believe in Him, to live forever.   In the fullness of time, it was His will to become what we are, so that we might inherit the eternity He promised and live with Him forever.

Here, then, is the grace conferred by these heavenly mysteries, the gift which Easter brings, the most longed for feast of the year, here are the beginnings of creatures newly formed – children born from the life-giving font of holy Church, born anew with the simplicity of little ones and crying out with the evidence of a clean conscience.   Chaste fathers and inviolate mothers accompany this new family, countless in number, born to new life through faith.   As they emerge from the grace-giving womb of the font, a blaze of candles burns brightly beneath the tree of faith.   The Easter festival brings the grace of holiness from heaven to men.   Through the repeated celebration of the sacred mysteries they receive the spiritual nourishment of the sacraments.   Fostered at the very heart of holy Church, the fellowship of one community, worships the one God, adoring the triple name of His essential holiness and together with the prophet, sings the psalm which belongs to this yearly festival –

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.

And what is this day?   It is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the author of light, who brings the sunrise and the beginning of life, saying of Himself – I am the light of day, whoever walks in daylight does not stumble.   That is to say, whoever follows Christ in all things will come by this path to the throne of eternal light.

Such was the prayer Christ made to the Father while He was still on earth –  Father, I desire that where I am, they also may be, those who have come to believe in me and that as you are in me and I in you, so they may abide in us.and what is this day - it is the lord jesus christ himself - anon - 24 april 2019 wed easter octave.jpg

Christ is Risen! He is Truly Risen, Alleluia! – 22 April – Monday of Easter Week

The Easter praise of Christ

Saint Melito of Sardis (Died 180)
Apostolic Father of the Church, Bishop and Martyr

An excerpt from his Easter Homily

We should understand, beloved, that the paschal mystery is at once old and new, transitory and eternal, corruptible and incorruptible, mortal and immortal.   In terms of the Law it is old, in terms of the Word it is new.   In its figure it is passing, in its grace it is eternal.   It is corruptible in the sacrifice of the lamb, incorruptible in the eternal life of the Lord  . It is mortal in his burial in the earth, immortal in his resurrection from the dead.

The Law indeed is old but the Word is new.   The type is transitory but grace is eternal. The lamb was corruptible but the Lord is incorruptible.   He was slain as a lamb. he rose again as God.   He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, yet he was not a sheep.   He was silent as a lamb, yet he was not a lamb.   The type has passed away; the reality has come. The lamb gives place to God, the sheep gives place to a man and the man is Christ, who fills the whole of creation.   The sacrifice of the lamb, the celebration of the Passover and the prescriptions of the Law have been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.   Under the old Law and still more under the new dispensation, everything pointed toward Him.

Both the Law and the Word came forth from Zion and Jerusalem but now the Law has given place to the Word, the old to the new.   The commandment has become grace, the type a reality.   The lamb has become a Son, the sheep a man and man, God.

The Lord, though he was God, became man.   He suffered for the sake of those who suffer, He was bound for those in bonds, condemned for the guilty, buried for those who lie in the grave but He rose from the dead and cried aloud:  Who will contend with Me? Let him confront Me.  I have freed the condemned, brought the dead back to life, raised men from their graves.   Who has anything to say against Me?   I, He said, am the Christ, I have destroyed death, triumphed over the enemy, trampled hell underfoot, bound the strong one and taken men up to the heights of heaven – I am the Christ.

Come, then, all you nations of men, receive forgiveness for the sins that defile you.   I am your forgiveness.   I am the Passover that brings salvation.   I am the lamb who was immolated for you.   I am your ransom, your life, your resurrection, your light, I am your salvation and your king.   I will bring you to the heights of heaven.   With my own right hand I will raise you up and I will show you the eternal Father.come then all you nations of men - easter mon 22 april 2019 - christ is risen! st melito of sardis.jpg

Our Morning Offering – 17 April – Wednesday of Holy Week

To Jesus the Life
By Blessed James Alberione

O Wellspring of eternal life,
all life is grafted in You, Lord,
You break the bonds of death
and give life to us anew.
Descending from Your splendid throne,
You have brought this gift to us below,
profusely from Your open side,
You bestow divine riches.
We have joined Your Mystical Body,
engrafted by baptismal grace,
life flowing from Your seven springs,
lifts up anew our fallen race.
Though wounded
by our parents’ fault,
our nature is restored by grace,
virtue is practised for Your love
and reaps the heavenly reward.
Only You can give true peace,
lead nations to live in harmony,
cause innocence to bloom in homes,
grant prosperity to our works.
Jesus, our everlasting Life, Truth and Way,
by You, we are led,
by You we live,
to Father, You and the Spirit,
may all peoples praise and glory give.

You guide us om life’s troubled ways,
amid the errors of each age,
while we gaze toward our fatherland.
taking to Yourself our nature,
You came to us in flesh and blood
and as our model and our mould,
You call us to tread the way You trod.
A stable You chose at birth,
long years You laboured tirelessly,
the bitter Cross You did embrace
and so You tell us,
“Learn of me.”

Our Morning Offering – 15 April – Monday of Holy Week

To Jesus the Truth
By Blessed James Alberione

O Jesus,
our One, our only Light,
when You illumine the anxious minds,
evil error takes flight
and eternal Truth serenely shines.
The world,
when deprived of Your Light,
remains enwrapped in densest darkness.
May faith and charity benign
unite their flames in every heart.
May every tongue sing praise to You,
may schools and arts in every age,
sing Your praises,
may books and journals bear Your Truth,
resplendent on each printed page.
May nations sing Your glorious paise
and around the globe, Your Truth resound,
transmitted by new means and ways,
which modern man has discovered.
Jesus, our everlasting Truth, Way and Life,
by You we are led,.
by You we live,
to Father, You and the Spirit,
may all peoples praise and glory give.

One Minute Reflection – 8 April – “I am the Light of the world”

One Minute Reflection – 8 April – Monday of the Fifth week of Lent, Year C, Gospel: John 8:12–20

“I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”...John 8:12

REFLECTION – “It would seem to me that the Lord’s words:  “I am the light of the world” are clear enough for those with eyes that enable them to have a share in that light.   But those who only have bodily eyes are astonished to hear it said by our Lord Jesus Christ – “I am the light of the world.”   There may even be those who say:  “Would Christ be the sun that determines the day by its rising and setting?”… No, Christ is not that.   The Lord is not the created sun but Him by whom the sun was created.   For “all things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be” (Jn 1:3).   Therefore, He is the light who created the light we see.   Let us love this light, understand it, desire it, that led by it we may in due course attain it and may live in it so as never to die…

So you see, my brethren, you see, if you have eyes that see spiritual things, what kind of light this is of which the Lord says:  “Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness.” Follow that sun and let us see whether or not you walk in darkness.   Behold how He arises and comes towards you.   Following His course He makes His way westwards but you on your part, must walk towards the rising sun, the Christ.”…St Augustine (354-430) Father & Doctor of the Churchi am the light of the world john 8 12 - he is the light who created the light - st augustine 8 april 2019.jpg
