PRAYER – Lord Jesus, make me realise that You are living in me and I am in You.   Enable me to readiate You in my outward life by being consciously generous, loving, humble, kind.   By being consciously united to You in every thought, word and deed.   I pray that Your purpose may be mine too, do the Father’s Will.   That the Saints who walk before me, Sts Cyril and Methodius, St Valentine, may pray for us all, amen!

St Paul Miki SJ – 6 February

Today is the memorial of St Paul Miki SJ (1564-1597), a Jesuit novice from a noble Japanese family who was martyred along with 25 companions at Nagasaki in 1597.

This is from an eyewitness account of the execution:

“Our brother Paul Miki, seeing himself raised to the most honourable position that he had ever occupied, openly proclaimed that he was a Japanese and a member of the Society of Jesus.   And that he was being put to death for having preached the Gospel.   He gave thanks to God for such a precious favour.

He then added these words:  “Having arrived at this moment of my existence, I believe that no one of you thinks I want to hide the truth.   That is why I declare to you that there is no other way of salvation than the one followed by Christians.   Since this way teaches me to forgive my enemies and all who have offended me, I willingly forgive the king and all those who have desired my death.   And I pray that they will obtain the desire of Christian baptism.

At this point, he turned his eyes toward his companions and began to encourage them in their final struggle. The faces of them all shone with great gladness. Another Christian shouted to him that he would soon be in paradise. “Like my Master,” murmured Paul, “I shall die upon the cross. Like him, a lance will pierce my heart so that my blood and my love can flow out upon the land and sanctify it to his name.

As they awaited death the entire group sang the canticle of Zachary (see Luke 1:67-79). The executioners stood by respectfully until they had intoned the last verse. Then at a given signal they thrust their spears into the victims’ sides. On that day, February 5, 1597, the church of Japan welcomed its first martyrs.”

You have heard that it was said: “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.”   But I say to you, ‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you’……Matthew 5:43-44

Consider the people who dislike you, who oppose your ideas and aims.   How can you show love to them?

REFLECTION – “On this Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Church is celebrating the Day of Consecrated Life.   This is an appropriate occasion to praise the Lord and thank him for the precious gift represented by the consecrated life in its different forms; at the same time it is an incentive to encourage in all the People of God, knowledge and esteem for those who are totally consecrated to God.   Indeed, just as Jesus’ life in his obedience and dedication to the Father is a living parable of the “God-with-us”, so the concrete dedication of consecrated persons to God and to their brethren becomes an eloquent sign for today’s world of the presence of God’s Kingdom.”……..Pope Benedict XVI 2 February 2006

Thought for the Day – 26 January

St Paul makes it clear to Timothy that he is to proclaim the Word with persistence BUT “through all patience.”   This is the most important part of these instructions!   Growth in the Spirit is a lifelong journey, in which great patience is needed.   The one who proclaims the Word needs patience in dealing with the one being taught.   This is a human enterprise and humans are notoriously slow to understand, accept and implement the Word of God in their lives.   Christians are to proclaim the Word without being judgmental.   So, as Paul tells Timothy so he tells you and me to go forth, proclaim the Word, live your faith, treat others with respect and kindness and do it all with patience and love.   Thus faith is the centre of the Christian’s life and from that centre he radiates Christ’s love to all whom he meets. (Msgr. Bernard Bourgeois)

In these letters, we get another glimpse of life in the early Church: great zeal in the apostolate, great communion in Christ, great friendship.   Yet always there is the problem of human nature and the unglamorous details of daily life: the need for charity and patience in “quarrels with others, fears within myself,” as Paul says.   Through it all, the love of Christ sustained them.   At the end of the Letter to Titus, Paul says that when the temporary substitute comes, “hurry to me.”

REFLECTION – …. we consider together the two figures of Timothy and Titus, we are aware of certain very significant facts………. it clearly appears that (Paul) he did not do everything on his own but relied on trustworthy people who shared in his endeavours and responsibilities.   The sources concerning Timothy and Titus highlight their readiness to take on various offices that also often consisted in representing Paul in circumstances far from easy.   In a word, they teach us to serve the Gospel with generosity realizing that this also entails a service to the Church herself..”………………Pope Benedict XVI

Novena to St Paul – 19 January

Day FOUR

For St John Paul, conversion means returning to God “through evaluating earthly realities in the unfailing light of His truth.”   The proof of St Paul’s conversion is his profession:  “For me to live is Christ” (Phil 1:21).   Conversion is a conversion to the will and design of God:  It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me” (Gal 2:20).

Let us Pray:

Glorious St Paul,
your conversion is a powerful witness to the world
that God loves us and does not give up on us,
no matter how far we stray.
Help me to live a life of ongoing conversion.
True conversion means converting my life to the
design of God, the plan He has for me right now.
Pray that I will love God’s will and providence for me.
May I learn to truly surrender myself to wisdom and tenderness of God.
Pray that I may love God’s will and providence for me.
In this confidence, I entrust to you, St Paul,

REFLECTION – All the faithful of every state and condition are armed with a great deal of wondrous means of salvation. They are thus called by the Lord – each in his or her own way – to attain that perfection of holiness with which the heavenly Father is perfect….Vatican II Constituion on the Church No 11

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, help me to be holy in the way that You have laid out for me. Let me carry out the duties of my state in life to the full and so attain the holiness proper to me. St Canute, as a King you offered your life to the King of Kings and died for love of Him, please pray for us, amen.

PRAYER – All-knowing Lord, let me realise that my real self is only what I am in Your eyes. All my weaknesses and sins You know but true too, You know the love I bear for You and for Your children.   Grant me Your grace to love more and more, so that I may become a saint and join St Margaret in heaven, she who is a true example of immense love.   St Margaret of Hungary pray for us, amen.
