Thought for the Day – 13 February – The Memorial of Blessed Jordan of Saxony O.P. (1190-1237

“You have no doubt heard that our kind Father, Master Jordan, his two companions and ninety-nine other persons have been taken from this wicked world by shipwreck in a violent storm.   However, dear brothers, do not let your hearts be saddened by this awful calamity;  for God, in His mercy, has already greatly consoled us, who have become orphans through the untimely death of a good Father.   After the storm, the bodies of our three confrères were washed ashore and bright lights in the form of crosses shone over them every night until they were found and buried where they lay by those who escaped from the disaster.   These, together with many others, have borne testimony to the miracle.   Moreover, the inhabitants of the neighbourhood, drawn to the place of the catastrophe by reports of so marvellous an occurrence, testify that they experienced a sweet fragrance all round;   while those who touched the bodies declare that this fragrance did not leave their hands for more than ten days.   Indeed, this same sweet odour pervaded the locality until the fathers at Ptolomais came in a boat and took up the bodies for burial in the conventual church of that city.   There now repose the remains of our late beloved Master General;  and many wonders have in this short time been attributed to his intercession.   Blessed be God in all His works. Amen”

All through his religious life the second head of the Order had been regarded as a very saintly man.   A number of prodigies were said to have been wrought by him.   Others came after his death;  while several very holy persons declared that, in visions, they saw his soul ascend into heaven.   All this, together with the facts recorded in the letter just quoted, occasioned a devotion to the man of God which continued through the course of centuries and caused him to be given the title of Blessed Jordan of Saxony.   After a thorough study of this immemorial veneration by the Sacred Congregation of Rites, Leo XII, who reigned from 1823 to 1829, allowed the Friars Preacher the world over to say mass and recite the divine office in his honour.   Throughout his Order he is held in an esteem second only to that which is accorded to Saint Dominic.

It is not commonly known or understood the highly efficacious intercession available to us all and thus we pray, Blessed Jordan of Saxony, Pray for us!bl-jordanofsaxony-prayforus-- 13 feb 2017 . 2

“There are two ways of keeping God’s word, namely, one, whereby we store in our memory what we hear and the other, whereby we put into practice, what we have heard (and none will deny that the latter is more commendable, inasmuch, as it is better to sow grain, than to store it in the barn).”

Saint of the Day – 13 February – Blessed Jordan of Saxony O.P. (1190-1237)

Saint of the Day – 13 February – Blessed Jordan of Saxony O.P. (1190-1237) Religious Priest, Preacher, the Second Master-General of the Domican Order, after St Dominic himself.   He was born in 1190 at Padberg Castle, diocese of Paderborn, Westphalia, old Saxony (in modern Germany), though it is rumoured to have been born in Palestine while his parents were on a pilgrimage, and named after the River Jordan but this is apparently aprochryphal.   He died by drowning in 1237 in a shipwreck off the coast of Syria while on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  He is buried in Acre.   Patronages – against drowning, of the Dominican Order, Vocations to the Dominicans.   Attributes – Dominican writing, a pen, a lily.

Mothers hid their sons when Master Jordan came to town…

These ten short words sum up in a humorous kind of way, the outstanding legacy of the successor of St Dominic.   It not only gives the impression that this new group of mendicant preachers had a clearly defined and essential role to play, challenging the infectious heresies so prevalent at the time (as was confirmed by Pope Honorius III in 1216 when he formally recognised the Order) but also that people were powerless to resist when confronted with it.   Of Blessed Jordan we are told that that during his tenure as Master General, between 1222 and 1237, over 1000 novices joined the Dominicans, new convents were established and new provinces formed.   Under his rule the Order continued to win many of the best men available, particularly in the Universities where many a Professor was seduced.   With such a charming figure sweeping through the neighbourhood is it any wonder that mothers tried to keep their sons out of reach?

A German of noble descent born in 1190, he had been in the Order a mere two years before his election as Master General in 1222.   By today’s standards, his rapid accession may appear hasty, a point he himself was quick to highlight when he became the first Provincial of Lombardy in 1221.   In the Libellus he writes:

‘In 1221, at the General Chapter in Bologna, they saw fit to make me the first Provincial of Lombardy, although I had only been in the Order one year and had not struck root as deeply as I ought to have done.   I was to be placed over others as their superior, before I had learned to govern my own imperfection.   I was not present at this Chapter myself.’bl jordan of saxony

Despite his anxiety, he must have made quite an impression on his brothers during his short tenure in the Order.   We are told about the type of person he was by those who knew.   It is obvious that he possessed all those qualities the ideal leader should have. Inspired by his brother and friend St Dominic, he was abounding in faith, kind and compassionate, humble, authoritative and yet at the same time understanding.   He had the ability to attract people by his sincerity.   His style of life complemented his style of words;  something that was evidently lacking at the time among the Clergy and Religious. This was vital at a time when ‘reform’ was the buzzword of the day.bl jordan - add

His great love for the poor was well known. There is a story said of him that:

‘Meeting a vagabond upon the road who feigned sickness and poverty, he gave him one of his tunics, which the fellow at once carried straight to a tavern for drink.   The brethren, seeing this done, taunted him with his simplicity:  ‘There now, Master, see how wisely you have bestowed your tunic.’  ‘I did so,’ said he, ‘because I believed him to be in want through sickness and poverty and it seemed at the moment to be a charity to help him;  still, I reckon it better to have parted with my tunic than with charity.’

Our Blessed Jordan may well be still speaking to us today!   Not all those people who present themselves as being needy these days may be genuine.   However, when we stop caring, we stop striving to be like Jesus.   Let us never restrain God’s work in our hearts but allow ourselves to be moved by compassion  . Perhaps it was this genuineness that caused Mothers in the district to be wary of his arrival.

Jordan died in a shipwreck on his return from Palestine, where he had visited the local convents of the Order;  the shipwreck occurred off the coast of Syria in 1237.   It is perhaps fitting that this great servant of the Order of Preachers, who was kept at arm’s length by the Mothers who feared his magnetic appeal on their sons, should nestle snuggly within the loving embrace of the Mother of God as famously depicted in that famous vision of St Dominic.death of blessed jordanmary and the dominican saints

“Follow Me. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Without the Way, there is no going.
Without the Truth, there is no knowing.
Without the Life, there is no living.
I am the Way, which you must follow,
the Truth, which you must believe,
the Life, for which you must hope.
I am the inviolable Way,
the infallible Truth,
the unending Life.
I am the Way that is straight,
the supreme Truth,

If you will know the truth, believe in Me.
If you will be perfect, sell all.
If you will be My disciple, deny yourself.
If you will possess the blessed life, despise this present life.
If you will be exalted in heaven, humble yourself on earth.
If you wish to reign with Me, carry the Cross with Me.
For only the servants of the Cross find the life of blessedness and of true light.”if you wish to enter into life - imitation chapeter 56 - 12 feb 2018

“MY CHILD, the more you depart from yourself,
the more you will be able to enter into Me.
As the giving up of exterior things, brings interior peace,
so the forsaking of self, unites you to God.
I will have you learn perfect surrender to My will,
without contradiction or complaint.”

“Take courage, brethren, let us go forward together
and Jesus will be with us.
For Jesus’ sake we have taken this cross.
For Jesus’ sake let us persevere with it.
He will be our help as He is also our leader and guide.
Behold, our King goes before us and will fight for us.
Let us follow like men.
Let no man fear any terrors.
Let us be prepared to meet death valiantly in battle.
Let us not suffer our glory to be blemished
by fleeing from the Cross.”

Sunday Reflection – 11 February 2018 – 6th Sunday of Year B

Sunday Reflection – 11 February 2018 – 6th Sunday of Year B – Pope Benedict and St John Paul

In liturgical prayer, especially the Eucharist and – formats of the liturgy – in every prayer, we do not speak as single individuals, rather we enter into the “we” of the Church that prays.   And we need to transform our “I” entering into this “we”.   Pope Benedict XVI is one of the great liturgists of our age.   His seminal book, “The Spirit of the Liturgy”, written when he was still Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, is required reading in most seminaries and should be read by every Catholic.

“It is not the individual – priest or layman – or the group that celebrates the liturgy but it is primarily God’s action through the Church, which has its own history, its rich tradition and creativity.   This universality and fundamental openness, which is characteristic of the entire liturgy is one of the reasons why it can not be created or amended by the individual community or by experts but must be faithful to the forms of the universal Church.

The entire Church is always present, even in the liturgy of the smallest community.   For this reason there are no “foreigners” in the liturgical community.   The entire Church participates in every liturgical celebration, heaven and earth, God and man.   The Christian liturgy, even if it is celebrated in a concrete place and space and expresses the “yes” of a particular community, it is inherently Catholic, it comes from everything and leads to everything, in union with the Pope, the Bishops , with believers of all times and all places.   The more a celebration is animated by this consciousness, the more fruitful the true sense of the liturgy is realised in it.

Dear friends, the Church is made visible in many ways:  in its charitable work, in mission projects, in the personal apostolate that every Christian must realise in his or her own environment.   But the place where it is fully experienced as a Church is in the liturgy : it is the act in which we believe that God enters into our reality and we can meet Him, we can touch Him.   It is the act in which we come into contact with God, He comes to us and we are enlightened by Him.

So when in the reflections on the liturgy we concentrate all our attention on how to make it attractive, interesting and beautiful, we risk forgetting the essential:  the liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves, it is His work, He is the subject and we must open ourselves to Him and be guided by Him and His Body, which is the Church.

Let us ask the Lord to learn every day to live the sacred liturgy, especially the Eucharistic celebration, praying in the “we” of the Church, that directs its gaze not in on itself but to God and feeling part of the living Church, of all places and of all time.”…Pope Benedict XVI – Wednesday Audience 3 Oct 2012

“I have been able to celebrate Holy Mass in chapels built along mountain paths, on lakeshores and seacoasts.   I have celebrated it on altars built in stadiums and in city squares….This varied scenario of celebrations of the Eucharist, has given me, a powerful experience of its universal and, so to speak, cosmic character – YES, cosmic!   Because even when it is celebrated on the humble altar of a country church, the Eucharist is always, in some way, celebrated on the altar of the world.  It unites heaven and earth.   It embraces and permeates all creation!” St Pope John Paul “Ecclesia de Eucharista no 8”the liturgy is celebrated - pope benedict = 11 feb 2018 sunday reflection

REFLECTION – “Jesus, who is present in our suffering neighbour, wishes to be present in every act of charity and service of ours, which is expressed also, in every glass of water we give “in his name” (cf Mk 9:41). Jesus wants love, the solidarity of love, to grow from suffering and around suffering. He wants, that is, the sum of that good which is possible in our human world. A good that never passes away. The Pope, who wishes to be a servant of this love, kisses the forehead and kisses the hands of all those who contribute to the presence of this love and to its growth in our world. He knows, in fact and believes that he is kissing the hands and the forehead of Christ himself, who is mystically present in those who suffer and in those who, out of love, serve the suffering.”…St Pope John Paul, Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes – 1979jesus, who is present in our suffering neighbour - st john paul - 11 feb 2018

Message of the Holy Father for the 26th World Day of the Sick – 11 February 2018

Message of the Holy Father

Mater Ecclesiae: “Behold, your son… Behold, your mother.
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.”
(John 19:26-27)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Church’s service to the sick and those who care for them must continue with renewed vigour, in fidelity to the Lord’s command (cf. Lk 9:2-6; Mt 10:1-8; Mk 6:7-13) and following the eloquent example of her Founder and Master.

The theme for this year’s Day of the Sick is provided by the words that Jesus spoke from the Cross to Mary, His Mother, and to John: “Woman, behold your son … Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home” (Jn 19:26-27).

1. The Lord’s words brilliantly illuminate the mystery of the Cross, which does not represent a hopeless tragedy, but rather the place where Jesus manifests his glory and shows his love to the end.   That love in turn was to become the basis and rule for the Christian community and the life of each disciple.

Before all else, Jesus’ words are the source of Mary’s maternal vocation for all humanity. Mary was to be, in particular, the Mother of her Son’s disciples, caring for them and their journey through life.   As we know, a mother’s care for her son or daughter includes both the material and spiritual dimensions of their upbringing.

The unspeakable pain of the Cross pierces Mary’s soul (cf. Lk 2:35) but does not paralyse her.   Quite the opposite.   As the Lord’s Mother, a new path of self-giving opens up before her.   On the Cross, Jesus showed His concern for the Church and all humanity and Mary is called to share in that same concern.   In describing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Acts of the Apostles show that Mary began to carry out this role in the earliest community of the Church.   A role that never ceases.

2. John, the beloved disciple, is a figure of the Church, the messianic people.   He must acknowledge Mary as his Mother.   In doing so, he is called to take her into his home, to see in her the model of all discipleship and to contemplate the maternal vocation that Jesus entrusted to her, with all that it entails:  a loving Mother who gives birth to children capable of loving as Jesus commands.   That is why Mary’s maternal vocation to care for her children is entrusted to John and to the Church as a whole.   The entire community of disciples is included in Mary’s maternal vocation.

3. John, as a disciple who shared everything with Jesus, knows that the Master wants to lead all people to an encounter with the Father. He can testify to the fact that Jesus met many people suffering from spiritual sickness due to pride (cf. Jn 8:31-39) and from physical ailments (cf. Jn 5:6). He bestowed mercy and forgiveness upon all, and healed the sick as a sign of the abundant life of the Kingdom, where every tear will be wiped away. Like Mary, the disciples are called to care for one another, but not only that. They know that Jesus’ heart is open to all and excludes no one. The Gospel of the Kingdom must be proclaimed to all, and the charity of Christians must be directed to all, simply because they are persons, children of God.

4. The Church’s maternal vocation to the needy and to the sick has found concrete expression throughout the two thousand years of her history in an impressive series of initiatives on behalf of the sick.   This history of dedication must not be forgotten.   It continues to the present day throughout the world.   In countries where adequate public health care systems exist, the work of Catholic religious congregations and dioceses and their hospitals is aimed not only at providing quality medical care but also at putting the human person at the centre of the healing process, while carrying out scientific research with full respect for life and for Christian moral values.   In countries where health care systems are inadequate or non-existent, the Church seeks to do what she can to improve health, eliminate infant mortality and combat widespread disease.   Everywhere she tries to provide care, even when she is not in a position to offer a cure.   The image of the Church as a “field hospital” that welcomes all those wounded by life is a very concrete reality, for in some parts of the world, missionary and diocesan hospitals are the only institutions providing necessary care to the population.

5. The memory of this long history of service to the sick is cause for rejoicing on the part of the Christian community and especially those presently engaged in this ministry.   Yet we must look to the past above all to let it enrich us.   We should learn the lesson it teaches us about the self-sacrificing generosity of many founders of institutes in the service of the infirm, the creativity, prompted by charity, of many initiatives undertaken over the centuries, and the commitment to scientific research as a means of offering innovative and reliable treatments to the sick.   This legacy of the past helps us to build a better future, for example, by shielding Catholic hospitals from the business mentality that is seeking worldwide to turn health care into a profit-making enterprise, which ends up discarding the poor.   Wise organisation and charity demand that the sick person be respected in his or her dignity and constantly kept at the centre of the therapeutic process.   This should likewise be the approach of Christians who work in public structures;  through their service, they too are called to bear convincing witness to the Gospel.

6. Jesus bestowed upon the Church his healing power:  “These signs will accompany those who believe… they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover (Mk 16:17-18). In the Acts of the Apostles, we read accounts of the healings worked by Peter (cf. Acts 3:4-8) and Paul (cf. Acts 14:8-11).   The Church’s mission is a response to Jesus’ gift, for she knows that she must bring to the sick the Lord’s own gaze, full of tenderness and compassion. Health care ministry will always be a necessary and fundamental task, to be carried out with renewed enthusiasm by all, from parish communities to the most largest healthcare institutions.   We cannot forget the tender love and perseverance of many families in caring for their chronically sick or severely disabled children, parents and relatives.   The care given within families is an extraordinary witness of love for the human person, it needs to be fittingly acknowledged and supported by suitable policies.   Doctors and nurses, priests, consecrated men and women, volunteers, families and all those who care for the sick, take part in this ecclesial mission.   It is a shared responsibility that enriches the value of the daily service given by each.

7. To Mary, Mother of tender love, we wish to entrust all those who are ill in body and soul, that she may sustain them in hope.   We ask her also to help us to be welcoming to our sick brothers and sisters.   The Church knows that she requires a special grace to live up to her evangelical task of serving the sick.   May our prayers to the Mother of God see us united in an incessant plea that every member of the Church may live with love the vocation to serve life and health.   May the Virgin Mary intercede for this Twenty-sixth World Day of the Sick; may she help the sick to experience their suffering in communion with the Lord Jesus and may she support all those who care for them.   To all, the sick, to healthcare workers and to volunteers, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing.

Thought for the Day – 10 February – The Memorial of St José Sánchez del Río “Joselito”(1913-1928)

Mexican child-saint José Sánchez del Río (Joselito) “is not only a martyr of the Christian faith, but is a martyr of the fundamental rights of the person.”

In an interview with the Register at the Vatican on Saturday, the newly proclaimed saint’s postulator, Father Fidel Gonzáles, stressed this as he spoke about St José Sánchez del Río.   Father Gonzalez stressed how young José’s faith was not for sale and no one, no “offer” — not even his parents’ intervention — would convince him to negate his faith, even if it cost him his life.

The Vatican official also addressed how there are many Christian martyr saints that exist, even if they have not been formally recognised by the Church and reflected on how important it is, in the midst of today’s world, full of ambiguities, relativism and religious persecution, to not abandon our faith, as St Josélito teaches us.

“It’s always a little surprising to hear about saints as young as only 14 years old.  But can a child, someone so young, really be a saint as much as an adult or an elderly person? Of course.   There is a theological sanctity that belongs to every baptised person, even if baptised even a few hours after birth, because it is a grace of the Holy Spirit.   Instead, the moral holiness grows like a tree, which comes and develops from a small seed and then spreads throughout the course of a lifetime.   In the specific case of St José Sánchez del Río, we are facing a martyr of nearly age 15 but he had a clear awareness of the ideas that led him to proclaim his faith with martyrdom.   I can say that he really is an exceptional figure.

Why?

…because he showed a psychological maturity much higher than that of his own age.   We could say that, psychologically, he had the maturity of someone at least 18 or 20 years old, especially as he demonstrated his firm decision to reject the many proposals that they made to free him from prison in exchange for the apostasy of his faith in Christ. But he replied with a phrase, instead, of accepting, one that the witnesses then reported, a phrase that he used speaking to his parents when they tried to free him from captivity: “My faith is not for sale,” which means: “My faith in Christ cannot be sold, even though I know that this involves torture and death.”
“Long live Christ the King” was the cry with which the Mexican Cristeros went down in history.   What did those words mean to them?   It’s a theological expression;  maybe neither St Josélito nor the others, fully realised its meaning, its significance.   For them, it was a way of proclaiming the centrality of Christ in history.   We must point out that St José did not ever stop proclaiming Christ.   They said, “If you shout, ‘Death to Christ the King,’ we will spare your life.”   But instead he continued: “Long live Christ the King. … Long live the Lady of Guadalupe.”   This invocation of Our Lady of Guadalupe was significant, too, as it was the first concrete manifestation of God in the history of Mexico and Latin America.   José stayed faithful to the very, very end, even as they continued stabbing him and eventually shot him with the pistol.”

As a specialist on the concept of sanctity, are you familiar with other martyrs like St. José?
“I have been a consultant for 31 years of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and I have seen hundreds of cases of martyrdom but never of a martyr so young.   It’s a unique case, where you really see the power of divine grace.   But José Sánchez del Río — this is my thesis — is not only a martyr of the Christian faith but is a martyr of the fundamental rights of the person: the right to freedom of opinion, freedom of religion, the right to practice their religion. … In short, he is a martyr of all the rights that were denied the totalitarian era.   The 20th century is the century of totalitarian regimes, each very different from the others but yet they all agree on setting aside God, getting rid of the foundation of human rights.
St Josélito simply teaches us that the Catholic faith is not for sale, as he said himself [while] dying.   This is especially true in a world like today, full of ambiguities, of relativism, of dominant cultural nihilism.   The Christian faith, instead, has a solid foundation, i.e., the principle that God is the creator of all reality and if we put it aside, then all the rights of the person lose consistency and end up at the mercy of a political power.

What will separate us from the love of Christ?   Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?   As it is written:  “For your sake we are being slain all the day;  we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.”   No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us ...Romans 8:35-37

Saint of the Day – 10 February – St José Sánchez del Río “Joselito” (1913-1928) Boy Martyr

Saint of the Day – 10 February – St José Sánchez del Río “Joselito” (1913-1928) known as “Joselito” – (28 March 1913 – 10 February 1928) Boy Martyr was a Mexican Cristero who was put to death by government officials because he refused to renounce his Catholic faith. His death was seen as a largely political venture on the part of government officials in their attempt to stamp out dissent and crush religious freedom in the area.   Patronages – Persecuted Christians, Catholic Children and Adolescents, Sahuayo, Mexico, his birthplace.   He was declared to be venerated on 22 June 2004 by St Pope John Paul II and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI – through the Cardinal-Prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of Saints – on 20 November 2005 in Mexico. Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to him on 21 January 2016, allowing for his canonisation to take place and he was proclaimed to be a saint on 16 October 2016.header - bl joseHeader - The first class relic from Blessed Jose

José Sánchez del Río was born on 28 March 1913 in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico. Wanting to defend the faith and rights of Catholics, he followed in the footsteps of his two older brothers and asked his mother for permission to join the Cristeros. She objected, telling him that he was too young.  “Mama”, he replied, “do not let me lose the opportunity to gain Heaven so easily and so soon”.

At that time, the laws banned religious orders, deprived the Church of property rights and denied priests civil liberties, including the right to trial by jury and the right to vote. As the restrictions on religious liberty increased, Catholics could be fined or imprisoned for teaching Church doctrine, wearing clerical attire, meeting together after their convents were disbanded, promoting religious life or holding religious services in non-church locations.

On 5 February 1928 the young boy was captured during a battle and imprisoned in the church sacristy.   In order to terrorise him, soldiers made him watch the hanging of one of the other captured Cristeros.   But José encouraged the man, saying, “You will be in Heaven before me.   Prepare a place for me.  Tell Christ the King I shall be with Him soon”.

In prison, he prayed the Rosary and sang songs of faith.   He wrote a beautiful letter to his mother telling her that he was resigned to do God’s will.   José’s father attempted to ransom his son but was unable to raise the money in time.Jose-Sanchez-del-Rio

On 10 February 1928 the teenager was brutally tortured and the skin of the soles of his feet was sheered off;   he was then forced to walk on salt, followed by walking through the town to the cemetery.   The young boy screamed with pain but would not give in.tortured feet of bl jose

At times the soldiers stopped him and said, “If you shout, “Death to Christ the King’, we will spare your life”.   But he answered: “Long live Christ the King!   Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe!”.

Once he arrived at the cemetery, José was asked once more if he would deny his faith. The 14 year old shouted out: “Long live Christ the King!”, and was summarily shot. (vatican.va)

Happiness is……Soon to be St Pope Paul VI, Cardinals approve miracle

Yesterday 7 February 2018, the Vatican Congregation recognised the healing of an unborn child. Pope Francis’ final decision and announcement of canonisation day is the last step

Paul VI will be canonised soon.   The meeting of the bishops and cardinals of the Congregation of Saints unanimously approved the recognition of a miracle attributed to the intercession of Giovanni Battista Montini.   Now the only thing missing, is Pope Francis’ final signature of approval and the announcement of the date for the canonisation of the Pontiff from Brescia who died in Castel Gandolfo forty years ago.

The miracle needed for Paul VI’s aureole concerns the healing of an unborn child, in the fifth month of pregnancy.   A case studied by the postulation in 2014. The mother, originally from the province of Verona, was carrying out a difficult pregnancy and was at risk of miscarriage for a disease that could have compromised the life of the fetus and mother.   A few days after Pope Montini’s beatification, which took place in Rome on Sunday 19 October 2014, the woman went to Brescia to pray the new Blessed at the Santuario delle Grazie. The baby girl was born in good health and still is as is the mother.

The miracle had been studied by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.   The inexplicability of the healing had been decided upon last year by the Medical Council of the Department and then analysed and approved by theologians.   The last step was today’s cardinal meeting, which took note of the doctors’ conclusions and theologians’ evaluations.   Now the Cardinal Prefect, Angelo Amato, will bring the bishops’ and cardinals’ ballot to Pope Francis.   He will have the final word on the matter.   The Holy Father will announce -during a consistory- the date of Paul VI’ canonisation, which will probably be celebrated in Rome in October, during the Synod of young people.

Last December, the diocesan weekly magazine of Brescia speculated on potential dates, “At this point, we are more sure than hopeful.  The month of October could be the right one. From 3 to 28 October in Rome the 15th Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on young people will be celebrated and will converge in the Vatican prelates from all over the world.   What better opportunity to canonise, in front of such a great number of Bishops, the other Pontiff – after Saint John XXIII – of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council?   It will probably occur on one of the first three Sundays of October, though the most popular one today seems to be that of 21th”.

However, the 50th Anniversary of the Publication of Pope Paul VI’s Encyclical, Humanae Vitae, is on 25 July this year (25 July 1968) – this too could be a very appropriate date.

Pope Montini, born in 1897 and died in 1978, was the Pontiff who brought the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council to completion and succeeded in concluding it practically with the unanimous approval of the documents voted.   He began the epoch of apostolic travels in the world, he went through the years of post-conciliar crisis.   The day he was beatified, Francis, who often refers to Montini’s Magisterium, had said, “On this day of the beatification of Pope Paul VI, his words return to my mind, with which launched the Synod of Bishops, … By carefully surveying the signs of the times, we are making every effort to adapt ways and methods to the growing needs of our time and the changing conditions of society”.

Pope Francis had thanked Paul VI for his “humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church! “ and had recalled that “the great helmsman” of the Second Vatican Council and founder of the synod, after the closing of the Council meeting, wrote:  “Perhaps the Lord has called me and preserved me for this service not because I am particularly fit for it, or so that I can govern and rescue the Church from her present difficulties, but so that I can suffer something for the Church and in that way it will be clear that He, and no other, is her guide and saviour”.   In this humility – Francis concluded – “the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth:  before the advent of a secularised and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom – and at times alone – to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord”.

I love you, nearly Saint Paul VI, please pray for the universal Church and for the whole world!blessed pope paul vi - pray for us.2

” God wishes to test you, like gold in the furnace.

Second Thought for the Day – 6 February – The Memorial of St Alfonso Maria Fusco (1839-1910)

“At the start of today’s celebration, we addressed this prayer to the Lord: “Create in us a generous and steadfast heart, so that we may always serve you with fidelity and purity of spirit” (Collect).

By our own efforts, we cannot give ourselves such a heart. Only God can do this and so in the prayer we ask him to give it to us as his “creation”.   In this way, we come to the theme of prayer, which is central to this Sunday’s scriptural readings and challenges all of us who are gathered here for the canonisation of new Saints.   The Saints attained the goal.   Thanks to prayer, they had a generous and steadfast heart.   They prayed mightily, they fought and they were victorious.

The saints are men and women who enter fully into the mystery of prayer.  Men and women who struggle with prayer, letting the Holy Spirit pray and struggle in them.   They struggle to the very end, with all their strength and they triumph but not by their own efforts:  the Lord triumphs in them and with them.   The seven witnesses who were canonised today also fought the good fight of faith and love by their prayers.   That is why they remained firm in faith, with a generous and steadfast heart.   Through their example and their intercession, may God also enable us to be men and women of prayer. May we cry out day and night to God, without losing heart.   May we let the Holy Spirit pray in us and may we support one another in prayer, in order to keep our arms raised, until Divine Mercy wins the victory.”

REFLECTION – “It was a genuine and tenacious faith that guided the work and life of Bl Alfonso Maria Fusco, founder of the Sisters of St John the Baptist.   From when he was a young man, the Lord put into his heart the passionate desire to dedicate his life to the service of the neediest, especially of children and young people…  For this he undertook the path of the priesthood and, in a certain way, become the “Don Bosco of Southern Italy.”   From the beginning, he wanted to involve in his work some young women who shared his ideal and he offered them the words of St John the Baptist, “Prepare the way of the Lord” (Lk 3,4).   Trusting in divine Providence, Alfonso and the Sisters of John the Baptist set up a work that was superior to their own expectations.   From a simple house for the welcome of the young, there arose a whole Congregation which today is present in 16 countries and on 4 continents working alongside those who are “little” ones and “last”. “…St Pope John Paul – Beatification Homily 7 October 2001it was a genuine - st john paul on st alfonso - 6 feb 2018

Get to the Tabernacle and let Heaven fall on you…….

In adoring the Blessed Sacrament, our hearts are enlarged and our minds receive the truth

In Lourdes, most miracles take place during the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Medjugorje is no different.   Although so much power and grace radiate from the Blessed Sacrament during heartfelt and worthy Adoration, in the end this is not about getting “something”.

The Curé d’Ars referred to a parishioner who said that during Adoration, “I look at Him. And He looks at me.”   It is about two people in love with each other – a creature and its God.   The deeper our hunger, the more He gives us; indeed, He gives us this hunger for Him.

What does one do during Adoration?   What do lovers do when they gaze with love at each other?   We need silence first of all.   When Pope Benedict XVI led Adoration in Hyde Park, about 80,000 young people kept silence with the Pope – to the consternation of media broadcasters.   Silence apparently does not make for good television. Television requires continuous chatter.   Adoration requires silence.get to the tabernacle - 5 feb 2018

Secondly, Adoration requires attentiveness.   It is heart-breaking to see couples sitting opposite each other in restaurants, both gazing avidly at their smartphone screens instead of each other.   It doesn’t take much to see who or what dominates that relationship.   We attend to that which we prize foremost.   In Adoration we attend to the Lord.

And thirdly, Adoration needs receptivity.   In our silence and attentiveness, we receive from God.   We are stripped of the illusion that we can do God any favours.   He longs to lavish Himself on us. Sitit sitiri, He thirsts to be thirsted for;   He longs to be longed for. He will guide us and teach us but only if we let Him.   In Adoration we receive from God the truth about God and about ourselves.

In my own experience it is powerful.   Jesus waits for us with eager longing.   And He longs to lavish Himself on us.   It’s like a tower made of champagne glasses and when the top glass is filled it overflows and fills the glasses below.   In Adoration, when we are open to receive, God enlarges our hearts to love and that love overflows to others, just like the champagne tower.

Sometimes people experience little change, often because of unconfessed sin or hiding ourselves from the Lord.   If we are closed, if we keep our hurts and everything about us hidden from the Lord, then very little can change.   Then Adoration will be experienced as a burden to be endured or avoided.   But when we are open to the Lord, it is very powerful.   God has so many graces He wants to give us and He leads and guides us in prayer through Adoration.   Sometimes we keep vigil with the Lord during Adoration, and make acts of reparation and love – because the world needs this so much.

JRR Tolkien once said he did not return to fidelity to the Lord by being chased by Francis Thompson’s Hound of Heaven but through hunger for the Blessed Sacrament, as one starving for love.   In a letter to his middle son during World War II (the context of the letter is marriage and sex), he wrote:

“Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth:  the Blessed Sacrament. . . . There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity and the true way of all your loves on earth… by the taste of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships… take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man’s heart desires.”

Get to the Tabernacle and let Heaven fall on you…for this is what is called “the totally Catholic devotion” (those who are Catholic to their roots, in their blood, whose way of life, whose food is being Catholic – in the words of St Edmund Campion – ‘To be a Catholic is my only glory.”) – we become what we love!to be a catholic is my only glory no 3- st edmund campion

REFLECTION – “My fellow Christians, our annual celebration of a martyr’s feast has brought us together.   Agatha achieved renown in the early Church for her noble victory. For her, Christ’s death was recent, His blood was still moist.   Her robe is the mark of her faithful witness to Christ.   Agatha, the name of our saint, means “good.”   She was truly good, for she lived as a child of God.   Agatha, her goodness coincides with her name and her way of life.   She won a good name by her noble deeds and by her name she points to the nobility of those deeds.   Agatha, her mere name wins all men over to her company. She teaches them by her example, to hasten with her to the true Good, God alone.” – from a homily on Saint Agatha by Saint Methodius of Sicily (c 788-c 847)agatha, the name of our saint - st methodius of sicily - 5 feb 2018

PRAYER – Lord God, let St Agatha, who became precious in Your sight through her pure life and valiant martyrdom, plead for our forgiveness.   For, with joy and rejoicing, as though to a feast, St Agatha, went to prison and offered her sufferings to You, with many prayers.   Through Jesus Christ, Your divine Son, in unity with the Spirit, one God forever. St Agatha, pray for us, amen.st agatha - pray for us 5 feb 2018

Quote/s of the Day – 4 February – 5th Sunday of Year B

“Speaking of the Eucharist/the Holy Mass”

“When Mass is being celebrated, the sanctuary is filled, with countless angels, who adore the divine victim, immolated on the altar.”

St John Chrysostom (347-407) Father & Doctor of the Churchwhen mass is being celebrated - st john chrysostom - 4 feb 2018

“The Holy Mass would be of greater profit, if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls, after death.”

Pope Benedict XV (1854-1922)the holy mass - pope benedict XV

“One merits more, by devoutly assisting at a Holy Mass, than by distributing, all of his goods to the poor and travelling, all over the world, on pilgrimage.”

St Bernard if Clairvaux (1090-1153) Doctor of the Churchone merits more - st bernard of clairvaux - 4 feb 2018

“The celebration of Holy Mass has the same value as the Death of Jesus on the Cross.”

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) Doctor of the Churchthe celebration of holy mass - st thomas aquinas - 28 jan 2018

“When you have received Him, stir up your heart to do Him homage, speak to Him about your spiritual life, gazing upon Him in your soul, where He is present, for your happiness, welcome Him as warmly as possible and behave outwardly, in such a way, that your actions, may give proof to all, of His Presence.”

St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Churchwhen you have received him - st francis de sales - 4 feb 2018

“If someone said to us, “At such an hour a dead person is to be raised to life, ” we should run very quickly to see it.   But is not the Consecration, which changes bread and wine into the Body and Blood of God, a much greater miracle than to raise a dead person to life?   We ought always to devote at least a quarter of an hour to preparing ourselves to hear Mass well.   We ought to annihilate ourselves before God, after the example of His profound annihilation in the Sacrament of the Eucharist and we should make our examination of conscience, for we must be in a state of grace. to be able to assist properly at Mass.   If we knew the value of the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or rather, if we had faith, we should be much more zealous to assist at it.”

St John Vianney (1786-1859)we ought always - st john vianney - 4 feb 2018

One Minute Reflection – 4 February – The Memorial of St Joseph of Leonissa O.F.M. CAP (1556-1612)

Clearly you are a letter of Christ which I have delivered, a letter written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh in the heart….2 Corinthians 3:3

REFLECTION – “Every Christian must be a living book wherein one can read the teaching of the gospel. This is what St Paul says to the Corinthians.   Our heart is the parchment;  through my ministry the Holy Spirit is the writer because ‘my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe’ (Psalm 45:1).”….St Joseph of Leonissaevery christian must be a living book - st joseph of leonissa - 4 feb 2018

PRAYER – Almighty God, You made Saint Joseph of Leonessa, an illustrious preacher of the gospel. Through his prayers inflame us with love and with his zeal for souls that we may serve You alone. St Joseph of Leonissa, pray for us, amen.st joseph of leonissa - pray for us - 4 feb 2018

Quote of the Day – 3 February – The Memorial of St Blaise – Martyr (Died c 316)

Quote of the Day – 3 February – The Memorial of St Blaise – Martyr (Died c 316)

“Speaking of Prayer”

The heart-rending and beautiful words of another Martyr, St Maximillian Kolbe (1894-1941), on the power of prayer.

The day was long,
The burden I had borne
Seemed heavier than I could longer bear
And then it lifted but I did not know
Some one had knelt in prayer;
Had taken me to God, that very hour,
And asked the easing of the load and He,
In infinite compassion, had stooped down
And taken it from me.
We cannot tell how often, as we pray
For some bewildered one,
Hurt and distressed,
The answer comes,
But many times those hearts,
find sudden peace and rest.
Someone had prayed and Faith,
a reaching hand,
Took hold of God
and brought Him down, that day!
So many, many hearts have need of prayer.
Oh, let us pray!

...Do not use your freedom as an opening for self-indulgence but be servants to one another in love….the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control; no law can touch such things as these…Galatians 5:13,22-23

REFLECTION – “If I were worthy of such a favour from my God, I would ask that He grant me this one miracle: that by His grace He would make of me a good man.”- St Ansgar to a parishioner who was praising him for being a miracle workerif i were worthy - st ansgar - 3 feb 2018

PRAYER – Holy Father, You sent St Ansgar, Monk and Bishop, to bring the light of Christ to many nations of Northern Europe.   Through his prayer give us grace to live always in the light of Your truth.   Grant too, that by the prayers of St Blaise, we too may be granted the grace to follow Your only Son, no matter our sufferings, to You, in our heavenly home.   We make our prayer, through Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever amen.st ansgar - pray for us - 3 feb 2018st-blaise-pray-for-us-3-february-2017
