His Feast Day is today and was thus from 1595. It was changed to 19 June in 1969. St Romuald’s body is incorrupt.

Notre-Dame d’Avesniéres, Laval / Our Lady of Avesnières, Laval, France (11th Century) – 7 February:

The Basilica of Notre-Dame Avesnières is located in Laval, in the region of Pays de la Loire. It is located in the district of Avesnières, on the right bank of the Mayenne river and south of the City centre. The Church has existed at least since the 11th Century but it got its present appearance in the 12th Century, when the Benedictines set up a Priory here. The nuns left Avesnières during the Hundred Years’ War and the Church then became a simple Parish Church. It was raised to the rank of minor Basilica in 1898, by Pope Leo XIII.

The Church was founded by Guy, Lord of Laval, who, falling into the river wanting to cross it, was miraculously saved from drowning, by the Blessed Virgin and transported safely to the river bank.
The spot was chosen, in remembrance of this miraculous rescue, to host a Sanctuary dedicated to the Notre-Dame.
In 1871, Monsignor Casimir Wicart, first Bishop of Laval, in the face of the anxiety provoked by the advance of the Prussian troops, decided to organise a large prayer vigil in Avesnières. At this ceremony, the faithful assembled and took an oath to rebuild the Church if the Blessed Mother saved the City from foreign occupation. The next day, the Prussians were stopped in their tracks in Saint-Melaine, at the gates of Laval, when the Virgin appeared before them. Where is our faith today?!

St Giles Mary of Saint Joseph OFM (1729-1812) known as the “Consoler of Naples” and the “Saint of the Little Way.” Although his desire was to become a priest, his lack of education meant that he was unable to fulfil this desire and served instead as a professed religious Friar in the Order of Friars Minor in Naples.

Sexagesima Sunday is the second Sunday before the start of Lent, which makes it the eighth Sunday before Easter. Traditionally, it was the second of the three Sundays (Septuagesima is the first and Quinquagesima is the third) of preparation for Lent.
Sexagesima literally means “sixtieth,” though it falls only 56 days before Easter.

Nostra Signora delle Grazie, o Nostra Signora del Capo chino / Our Lady of Grace, or Our Lady of the Bowed Head, Rome (1610) – 7 February:

Among the many miraculous images of the Mother of God through which she deigns to grant her favours, there is one in the Monastery Church of the Carmelites in Vienna, entitled the Mother of Grace, or Our Lady of Grace, also known also as Our Lady of the Bowed Head.
In 1610 a Carmelite, Dominic of Jesus-Mary, found, among the votaries of an old altar, in the Monastery Church of Maria della Scala in Rome an oil painting of the Mother of God, dust-covered and somewhat torn, which grieved him. Taking it into his hands, he shook the dust off it and kneeling down venerated it with great devotion.
He had the picture renovated and placed it on the shelf in his cell, where he made it the object of his love and supplications, in favour of those, who came to him in their necessities and afflictions.
One night while he was praying fervently before the picture, he noticed that some dust had settled on it. Having nothing but his course woollen handkerchief, he dusted it with that and apologised,
“O pure and holiest Virgin, nothing in the whole world is worthy of touching your holy face but since I have nothing but this coarse handkerchief, deign to accept my goodwill.”
To his great surprise, the face of the Mother of God appeared to take on life and smiling sweetly at him, she bowed her head, which, thereafter, remained inclined.
Fearing he was under an illusion, Dominic became troubled but Mary assured him that his requests would be heard – he could ask of her with full confidence any favour he might desire. He fell upon his knees and offered himself entirely to the service of Jesus and Mary and asked for the deliverance of one of is benefactor’s souls in purgatory. Mary told him to offer several Masses and other good works – a short time after, when he was again praying before the image, Mary appeared to him bearing the soul of his benefactor to Heaven. Dominic begged that all who venerated Mary in this image of Our Lady of Grace might obtain all they requested. In reply the Virgin gave him this assurance:

“All those who devoutly venerate me in this picture and take refuge to me will have their request granted and I will obtain for them, many graces but especially, will I hear their prayers for the relief and deliverance of the Souls in Purgatory.”
Dominic soon after placed the image into the church of Maria Della Scala so that more devotees of Mary could venerate it. Many wonderful favours were and are obtained by those who honoured and invoked Mary here. Reproductions were made of Our Lady of Grace and sent to different parts of the world. After the death of Dominic the original painting was lent to Prince Maximilian of Bavaria. He gave it to the discalced Carmelites in Munich in 1631; they gave it to Emperor Ferdinand II of Austria and his wife Eleanore. After Ferdinand’s death, Eleanore entered the Carmelite convent in Vienna and took the picture with her. During the succeeding years the image was transferred to various places. Today, it is in the Monastery Church of Vienna. On 27 September 1931, it was solemnly crowned by Pope Pius XI – the 300th anniversary of arrival in Vienna.

Thought for the Day – 7 February

Perhaps we wonder how we could possibly endure the sufferings that the martyrs suffered, such terrible and prolonged sufferings and where would we find the strength and endurance to suffer to death, for our faith?   The martyrs do not endure by their own strength and they are well aware of this.   If that time should ever come to us, the strength would be given us by God.   Believe it!

REFLECTION – “Do not allow yourselves to be overly saddened by the unfortunate accidents of this world.   You are not aware of the benefits that they bring and by what secret judgment of God they are arranged for the eternal joy of the Elect.”………..St John of the Cross

PRAYER – Father of wisdom, help me to accept all earthly misfortunes even without understanding them, with the sure knowledge that good will comes from them.  Let me never despair but trust in Your Providence that governs all things.   Bl Thomas Sherwood, I think of you and your acceptance of your fate in total love of our good God, please pray for me, amen.

Saint of the day – 7 February – Bl Thomas Sherwood LAY MARTYR of the English Persecution under Elizabeth I (c. 1552–1579)

The days of Elizabeth I were difficult and frightening days for the Catholics of England.  This was the day of the martyrs, Catholics following in the footsteps of St Thomas More and St John Fisher, who died for their faith.   Most of these martyrs were priests, educated and ordained abroad, sent back to England to minister to their flock, declared outlaws and criminals by the government.

Bl Thomas was not a priest and he was not a religious.   He had planned to study for the priesthood but had not yet carried out his plan when he was arrested.

He was by profession a wool draper and was associated with other Catholic families, in particular the family of Catholic Lady Tregonwell, in whose home it seems, Mass was heard.   The son of Lady Tregonwell, who was a protestant, turned him in to the authorities, who sent him to the Tower of London on 17 November, 1577.   There he was tortured in order to discover where he heard Mass, who the priest was and the names of other Catholics with whom he associated.

St Thomas More’s son-in-law, William Roper, tried to send him money for medicine and food but the officer at the Tower would not permit money to be spent on anything but clean straw for him to sleep upon.   Blessed Thomas was 27 at the time of his arrest and his brother wrote an account of his sufferings and martyrdom.   We also possess the directions given to the lieutenant of the Tower from the privy council, ordering him to obtain information from Thomas on the rack.   After his execution, his mother was arrested and put in prison, where she died fourteen years later.

During his terrible sufferings all he said was:  “Lord Jesus, I am not worthy to suffer for Thee, much less to receive those rewards which Thou hast promised to Those who confess Thee.”   Three weeks after his death it was recorded in the daybook of Douay College, where he was enrolled and awaited:  “On the first of March, Mr Lowe returned to us from England bringing news that a youth, named Thomas Sherwood, had suffered for his confession of the Catholic Faith, not only imprisonment, but torture and death itself.”
