that we may always shine

Our Morning Offering – 22 November – My God, My Hope is in You

Our Morning Offering – 22 November – My God, My Hope is in You

My God, My Hope is in You
By St Claude de la Colombière, SJ (1641-1682)

Loving and tender Providence of my God,
into Your hands I commend my spirit,
to You I abandon my hopes and fears,
my desires and repugnances,
my temporal and eternal prospects.
To You I commit the wants of my perishable body,
to You I commit the more precious interests of my immortal soul
for whose lot I have nothing to fear
as long as I do not leave Your care.
Though my faults are many, my misery great,
my spiritual poverty extreme,
my hope in You surpasses all.
it is superior to my weakness,
greater than my difficulties, stronger than death.
Though temptations should assail me, I will hope in You,
though I break my resolutions,
I will look to You confidently for grace to keep them at last.
though You should ask me to die, even then I will trust in You,
for You are my father, my God, the support of my salvation.
You are my kind, compassionate and indulgent parent,
and I am Your devoted child,
who casts myself into Your arms and begs Your blessing.
I put my trust in You
and so trusting, shall not be confounded.
Amen.my god, my hope is in you - 22 november - st claude de la colombiere

The Prayer below is by the Founder of the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St Madeleine-Sophie Barat (1779 – 1865)

O Sacred Heart of Jesus
By St Madeleine-Sophie Barat (1779 – 1865)

Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Give me a heart
that is one with your own,
A humble heart,
that knows and loves its nothingness,
A gentle heart,
that holds and calms its own anxiety,
A loving heart,
that has compassion
for the suffering of others,
A pure heart,
that recoils even
at the appearance of evil,
A detached heart,
that longs for nothing
other than the goodness of heaven,
A heart detached from self-love
and embraced by the love of God,
Its attention focused on God,
Its goodness its only treasure,
in time and in eternity.

Make Me Like Yourself, Mary My Mother
By St Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673-1716)

My powerful Queen,
you are all mine, through your mercy,
and I am all yours.
Take away from me, all that may displease God
and cultivate in me, all that is pleasing to Him.
May the light of your faith,
dispel the darkness of my mind,
your deep humility,
take the place of my pride,
your continual sight of God,
fill my memory, with His presence.
May the first, of the love of your heart
inflame the lukewarmness, of my own heart.
May your virtues, take the place of my sins.
May your merits, be my enrichment
and make up for all
that is wanting in me, before God.
My beloved Mother,
grant that I may, have no other spirit but your spirit,
to know Jesus Christ and His Divine will
and to praise and glorify the Lord,
that I may love God, with burning love like yours.

Our Morning Offering – 16 November – The Memorial of St Gertrude the Great (1256-1302)

An Act of Thanksgiving
By St Gertrude the Great

May my soul bless You,
O Lord God my Creator,
may my soul bless You.
From the very core of my being,
may all Your merciful gifts sing Your praise.
Your generous care for Your daughter,
has been rich in mercy;
indeed it has been immeasurable
and as far as I am able,
I give You thanks.
I praise and glorify,
Your great patience which bore with me
I offer You, most loving Father,
all the sufferings of Your beloved Son,
from that first infant cry
as He lay on the hay in the manger,
until that final movement, when,
bowing His head, with a mighty voice,
Christ gave up His spirit.
I think, as I make this offering,
of all that He underwent,
His needs as a baby,
His dependence as a young child,
the hardships of youth
and the trials of early manhood.
To atone for all my neglect I offer,
most loving Father,
all that Your only-begotten Son did
during His life,
whether in thought, word or deed.
And now, as an act of thanksgiving,
I praise and worship You, Father,
in deepest humility,
for Your most loving kindness and mercy.
Amen

Guide me Lord
By St Albert

O Lord Jesus Christ,
Who seeks those who stray
and receives them when returning,
make me approach You
through the frequent hearing of Your Word,
lest I sin against my neighbour
by the blindness of human judgement,
through the austerity of false justice,
through comparing his inferior status,
through too much trust in my merits
or through ignorance of the Divine Judgement.

Morning Offering to the Sacred Heart
(Treasury of the Sacred Heart 1950)

Everyday of my life belongs to You,
O my God
and every action of my life
should be performed
with the pure intention
of honouring You alone.
From this moment, I offer them
to Your Sacred Heart
and by this offering,
I consecrate them without reserve
to Your glory.
What a motive for performing
all my actions with all possible perfection!
Do not permit them, O my divine Saviour,
to be sullied by any motives unworthy of
Your Sacred Heart.
I renounce all that could lessen
the merit of my offering.
I renounce all vanity,
self-love and human respect.

and end this day in Your grace

of pleasing and honouring You.

who sang the songs of David,
who knew the deeds of Judith,
and held in her heart

may Your love be ever with Your people.

Give me Yourself, O My God
By St Augustine (354-430) Doctor of Grace

Give me Yourself, O my God,
give Yourself to me.
Behold I love You
and if my love is too weak a thing,
grant me to love You more strongly.
I cannot measure my love
to know how much it falls short of being sufficient
but let my soul hasten to Your embrace
and never be turned away,
until it is hidden in the secret shelter
of Your presence.
This only do I know,
that it is not good for me
when You are not with me,
when You are only outside me.
I want You in my very self.

which is not my God is utter want.

Lord, Whatever You Will
By Blessed Rupert Mayer SJ (1876-1945)
“The Apostle of Munich”

Lord, let happen whatever You will;
and as You will, so will I walk,
help me only to know Your will!
Lord, whenever You will,
then is the time,
today and always

Lord, whatever You will,
I wish to accept,
and whatever You will for me is gain,
enough that I belong to You.
Lord, because You will it, it is right,
and because You will it, I have courage.
My heart rests safely in Your hands!

Blessed Rupert’s beautiful prayer has been made into a song by the Catholic Filipino group Bukas Palad.   The lyrics are:

Lord, what You will let it be so
Where You will, there we will go
What is Your will, help us to know

Lord, when You will the time is right
In You there’s joy in strife
For Your will, I’ll give my life

To ease Your burden brings no pain
To forego all for You, is gain
As long as I in You, remain
REFRAIN:
Because You will it, it is best
Because You will it, we are blest
Till in Your hands, our hearts find rest
Till in Your hands, our hearts find rest

Prayer Before Holy Communion
Veni Domine Jesu!
By Fr Henry Augustus Rawes OSC (1826 – 1885) Oblate of St Charles
(1940 Prayer Book)

O Jesus, hidden God, I cry to You,
O Jesus, hidden Light, I turn to You,
O Jesus, hidden love, I run to You,
with all the strength I have, I worship You,
with all the love I have, I cling to You,
with all my soul, I long to be with You
and fear no more to fail, or fall from You.

O Jesus, never-ending love, Who seeks me,
You who die for longing love of me,
King, in all Your beauty, come to me,
white-robed, blood-sprinkled Jesus, come to me
and go no more, dear Lord, away from me.

O sweetest Jesus, bring me home to You,
free me, dearest God, from all but You.
From all the chains that keep me back from You,
call me, most powerful love, I’ll follow You,
You are my all and I love only You.

O hidden love, who now is loving me,
O wounded love, who once was dead to me,
O patient love, who wearies not of me,
O bear with me, till I am lost in You,
O bear with me, till I am found in You,
amen.

Most Holy Mary
By St Francis de Sales (1567-1622) Doctor of the Church

Most Holy Mary, Virgin Mother of God,
I am unworthy to be your servant.
Yet moved by your motherly care for me
and longing to serve you,
I choose you this day to be my Queen,
my Advocate and my Mother.
I firmly resolve ever
to be devoted to you
and to do what I can to encourage others
to be devoted to you.
My loving Mother,
through the Precious Blood of your Son shed for me,
I beg you to receive me
as your servant forever.
Aid me in my actions
and beg for me, the grace
never by thought, word, or deed

Daily Prayer for the Holy Souls

Immortal God, holy Lord,
Father and Protector of all You have created,
we raise our hearts to You today for those
who have passed out of this mortal life.
In Your loving mercy, Father of all,
be pleased to receive them
in Your heavenly company,
and forgive the failings and faults
they may have done from human frailty.
Your only Son, Christ, our Saviour,
suffered so cruelly that
He might deliver them from the second death.
By His merits may they share in the glory
of His victory over sin and death.
For all the faithful who have died we pray
but in particular for those dear to us,
parents, relatives and friends.
nor do we forget all who did good for us while on earth,
who helped us by their prayers, sacrifice and example.
We pray also for any who may have done us harm,
and stand in special need of Your forgiveness.
May the merits and prayers of our Virgin Mother, Mary
and those of all the Angels and Saints,
speak for us and assist them now.

In the honour and noble victory of the Martyrs.

bright with their abundant faith;
They scorned the wicked words
of those with this world’s power.
For You they sustained
fierce beatings, chains and torments,
they were drained by cruel punishments.
They bore their holy witness to You
who were grounded deep within their hearts;
they were sustained by patience and constancy.
Endowed with Your everlasting grace,

A Prayer to Seek the Consolation of the Cross
By St Alphonsus Rodriguez SJ (1532-1617)

Jesus, love of my soul,
centre of my heart!
Why am I not more eager to endure pains
and tribulations for love of You,
when You, my God,
have suffered so many for me?
Come, then, every sort of trial in the world,
for this is my delight, to suffer for Jesus.
This is my joy, to follow my Saviour
and to find my consolation
with my Consoler on the Cross.
This is my happiness,
this my pleasure:
to live with Jesus,
to walk with Jesus,
to converse with Jesus,
to suffer with and for Him,
this is my treasure.

Pray for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
By St Bonaventure OFM (1217-1274) Doctor of the Church

We beg the all-merciful Father through You,
His only-begotten Son made man for our sake,
crucified and glorified for us,
to send upon us from His treasure-house
the Spirit of sevenfold grace,
Who rested upon You in all His fullness:
the spirit of wisdom,
enabling us to relish the fruit
of the tree of life, which is indeed Yourself;
the gift of understanding:
to enlighten our perceptions;
the gift of prudence,
enabling us to follow in Your footsteps;
the gift of strength:
to withstand our adversary’s onslaught;
the gift of knowledge:
to distinguish good from evil
by the light of Your holy teaching;
the gift of piety:
to clothe ourselves with charity and mercy;
the gift of fear:
to withdraw from all ill-doing
and live quietly in awe of Your eternal majesty.
These are the things for which we petition.
Grant them for the honour of Your Holy Name,
to which, with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory, thanksgiving, renown,
and Lordship forever and ever.

Make Me Pure
(Prayer for the Sanctification of our bodies by Christ’s Body)
By Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

O my God,
teach me to live as one
who truly believes
in the great dignity,
the great sanctity
of this material body
in which You have lodged me.
And, therefore, dear Saviour,
I come often and earnestly,
to be a partaker of Your Holy Body and Blood,
so that by Your unutterable holiness,
I too may be made holy.
O my Lord Jesus,
I believe that our bodies
are the temples
of the Holy Spirit.
Should we not venerate that body
which You feed miraculously
with Your risen Body
and which the Spirit of God,
Your Spirit, inhabits.
O my God, who was nailed to the cross,

A Morning Salutation to Mary
A Coptic Catholic Prayer

We greet you,
glorious Mother of the Light
O Blessed Mary,
from the rising of the sun
to its setting
praise is due to you,
O Mother of God.
You are the second heaven,
the bright unfading flower,
the ever-virgin mother.
For the Father chose you
and the Holy Spirit overshadowed you
and the Son humbled Himself
and took flesh from you.
Therefore, ask Him to give peace
to the world He has created
and to deliver it from every tribulation.
And we shall sing to Him a new song
and bless Him,
now and forever,

Lord Jesus, May we Seek Your Face
By Pope Benedict XVI

Lord Jesus,
grant us restless hearts,
hearts which seek Your Face.
Keep us from the blindness of heart
which sees only the surface of things.
Give us the simplicity and purity
which allows us to recognise
Your Presence in the world.
When we are not able
to accomplish great things,
grant us the courage
which is born of humility and goodness.
Impress Your Face on our hearts.
May we encounter You along the way
and show forth Your image to the world.

O Lord the House of My Soul is Narrow
By St Augustine ((354-430) Father & Doctor of the Church

O God, the Light of the heart that sees You,
The Life of the soul that loves You,
The Strength of the mind that seeks You,
May I ever continue to be steadfast in Your love.
Be the joy of my heart;
Take all of me to Yourself and abide therein.
The house of my soul is, I confess, too narrow for You.
Enlarge it that You may enter.
It is ruinous but do repair it.
It has within it what must offend Your eyes,
I confess and know it,
But whose help shall I seek in cleansing it but Yours alone?
To You, O God, I cry urgently.
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep me from false pride and sensuality
That they not get dominion over me.
Amen

I Wish to Love Thee, My God
By St Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1870)

I wish to love Thee, my God,
with all my heart,
with all my being,
with all my strength.
I consecrate to Thee,
my thoughts,
desires, words
and actions,
whatever I have
and whatever I can be.
Let me use what I have
for Thy greater honour
and glory,
according to Thy will.
Amen

Father in Heaven, God of Love
All I Have and Am is Yours
La Sallian Morning Offering

Father in heaven, God of love,
all I have and am is Yours.
Grant that I may become a living sign
of Your compassion in this world.
Grant me the faith
to live my life,
always in the awareness
of Your loving presence.
Grant me zeal
to serve without thought of reward,
those to whom You send me.
Grant me charity,
to bear the burdens of my brothers and sisters.
Teach me to seek Your Son’s face,
in the last,
the lost
and the least.
In whatever I undertake,
may I seek above all things,
to procure Your glory,
as far as I am able
and as You will require of me.
Strengthen me by Your Holy Spirit,
to follow Jesus by living
the commitment I make this day.
Amen.
