Our Lady’s Veil was given by the Byzantine Empress Irene as a gift to the Emperor Charlemagne. In 876, Charles the Bald, Charlemagne’s grandson, donated the unfathomably precious relic to Chartres, where it remains. One of the many miracles which it has performed, is the saving of Chartres from pagan Viking invaders. Rollo, the Norsemen’s chieftain, besieged the city, but when the bishop of Chartres processed with Our Lady’s veil around the city walls, the Christian army rallied and launched a ferocious counter attack, while the Vikings suddenly lost courage and fled in terror.
Later that same year, Rollo was baptised and granted Normandy as his fiefdom. The time of the Vikings was almost over.
